the DisplaySize value in the Monitor section
of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
It now runs fine.
... X is reporting bogus dpi values; so not a grass bug and this ticket
should be moved to Xorg or closed. nothing much we can do about it.

FWIW, autoconf has been replaced by cmake in the soonish upcoming
release, so you might consider this bug to be fixed upstream with

Finally, debiangis/grass/trunk/debian/patches/xterm.dpatch ensures that
x-terminal-emulator will be the first term tried.
the problem could be that the LD_LIBRARY_PATH work-around is not
yet initialized at this point in the startup, or that gnome-terminal
is somehow abusing that.

packages used for Mapnik support are not
uploaded to Debian-official, but can be swapped
out for the much smaller Natural Earth global
coastline shape-files (which are licensed
in the public domain and would be nice to have

it is not mandatory, the default behaviour is to assume the mapset
name is the same as the current one. (the same is true for the GIS
database)
That wasn't actually noted in the man page (although it was in the

the latest upstream svn for GpsDrive now handles any of the three at
compile time through #ifdef checks, but this awaits a new debian package.
