use the web view, so I didn't go far enough. But as slim-maikel says,

OK, thanks bpa: I changed the BBC iPlayer settings, On Demand Stream
Preference, to HLS > DASH > MP3 > FlashAAC > FlashMP3, and all seems to
be working now.
Is that the best setting to use? I'm a bit baffled by the long list of
formats there. Do I need them all? There are certainly shorter lists

a setting there for streaming method. All I have there is Crossfade,

The behaviour seems to be that when I play one of those higher-kbps (not
kHz!) streams, it will instantly jump to a point a minute or two into
the stream, and start counting down as if playing, but with no audio.

presents compatibility info that has "Mac: Requires macOS 11.0 or later
and a Mac with the Apple M1 chip" at the top of a list of specs covering

I see the forum software has squashed that repo URL (I think this has
been a problem here).
I've clipped off the http from the front which seems to reproduce it
more or less in full ...
