Re: [QUAD-L] I'm upset and need to vent

2009-05-08 Thread David K. Kelmer
Hi Bobbie,

You are right, those of us on the Q-List are the ONLY ones that can understand
why you are upset.  There are more layers to Pete's feelings, than there is in
an onion.  Pete probably doesn't understand them all, but it's not just 200
miles, the care-giving, or the money.  It has to be worked out by Pete until he
sees that the fear he feels now, can be put behind him, and the two of you can
have a wonderful weekend together.  Give him the time, and your sweet Pete will
make the right choice...for both of you.  Stay strong.

Hello my friends,
You are the ONLY ones who will understand why I am upset. I realize how
very lucky I am living in an apartment for the past 26 years and have a van
that I can drive since 1980 and most of all my sweet Pete who is not only the
love of my life, my best friend but also my full-time home health aid. Which
brings me to why I'm upset?
My youngest sister, DeeDee, lives in Saratoga, NY and she found a Bed
Breakfast that is accessible and has a hospital bed in it and it's only 200
miles away. But Pete thinks 200 miles is to far to drive plus he would have to
unload the van and then take care of me. I think 200 miles is not far at all
especially if we share the driving and he will need to take care of me wherever
we are. So, he has made up his mind, were not going. We have not been on any
vacation since 1995!
Pete is also concerned that he will not get reinstated as my full-time HHA,
42 hrs a week. Although I can understand his concern me as the client can
request anybody and denie anybody.    Bobbie

Re: [QUAD-L] silver coated catheters

The first time I tried a silver coated catheter, it was silicone.  The nurse
couldn't even keep it my bladder long enough to fill the balloon.   We tried a
silver coated latex catheter, and it worked fine.  Never use a product you're
not happy with.  Stay strong.

My experience was completely out of the ordinary, I had an allergic reaction to
the catheter.  It felt like my bladder was on fire and it wouldn't stop
spasming until I had the catheter changed later that afternoon.  Then again, I
am allergic to silicone catheters, so it may be that I am just overly sensitive.

If you try to tell that to my caregivers, they'll laugh.

Welcome to the list.  Hopefully you will stay more than a little while.

I am glad I read wheelchair's response before I wrote to you.  I would
suggest that you speak with a social worker and try to attend some of the
meetings so you can get a little more up to speed with what's going on in his
plan.

I would also try dividing this up into separate e-mails with questions.  It
would probably give individuals who have good ideas for specific things the
ability to answer those questions without delving into some of the others.

What type of return does he have?  Is he able to move his arms?  Is his
diaphragm working at all?  Are they trying to wean him from the ventilator?  Is
there a possibility he will be able to eat normal foods, if so when do they
anticipate that occurring?
These are just a few of the questions I would be asking them.
Good luck and don't hesitate to ask more questions here.

Hi everyone,

My Husband (AL) became a quad on 5/10/08 from auto accident.  He has been
hospitizied ever since. I am working at getting him home on a CAC Waiver.  All
the documentation has been filled out, now I am just wanting to see if the
state will approve. I need some advice, on his medications and on some assisted
technology products.

First of all, Al has 8 pages of medications he is currently taking.  These
include Oxycoden and baclofen.  His Oxy is on a PRN in which he gets 20 mg
every 3 hours up to 5 times a day.  When he takes it he gets headaches, so he
has to take tylenol with it or right after it.  I am concerned about his daily
high dosage and hoping that his medications will be reduced soon...  He is
scheduled for baclofen testing for pump at end of month.  If that works-will
that help reduce his pain so the oxycoden can be reduced?  The oxycoden really
binds him up and we are having such a hard time getting him a scheduled bowel
program.  He goes from one extreme to another.  Either he has diaherra or he
gets so bound up it has to be dug out of him.  He is on different softners,
gets stimulated, plus we use the magic bullet as needed.

My husband also takes a lot of vitamins, prosource and calcium, and benefiber
is this something he will take forever as well?

Currently he is fed from a peg tube and has a trach, but hopefully both will
come out.  His vocal cords are paralyzed but they have started moving.  So he
is now able to eat theraputic feedings.  Which actually just got approved for
me to feed him soft solids.  He ordered his first meal yesterday.  It was
wonderful.

Any advice or knowledge you could share about his medications would be much
appreciated.

Also does anyone know what type of call light - where to get one for when my
husband comes home.  Currently he puffs in a straw to call the nurse.  I need
something like that in my house that would make a noise so I can hear him if I
am not in same room.

Thanks for your help.

I go from one extreme to the other with my body temp; but generally I am
freezing, unless I am in the heat too long and then it takes me forever to cool
off. I had a full muscle flap in'01 on my right ischium that was a result from
the wound getting osteomyelitis (that nearly frickin' killed me). I spent a
month in the hospital and 5 weeks off of my bottom at home; gradually getting
up in my chair for short duration's until my skin could handle 8 to 10 hrs. Now
these days to make sure I maintain good skin integrity, my nurse checks my
skin every 6 to 7 hours (just during the day) and applies a thin layer of
bag balm on the bum, then I am good to go for another 6 to 7 or even 10 to 12
hrs. if I had to. I sleep in a water-bed, and have for 20 yrs. and it has
worked great, plus it is warm and toasty!
Ruth I am sorry to hear of you losing spouse and the life you had; peer groups
may be of some help (a place to vent), when things are bad I look around and
see that it could be worse. If I can't bring myself up I ask the Lord for some
help!

I'm a C 4-6 quad, auto accident 30 yrs ago, female.
My normal temp. all year long is 96-97 degrees. Below 96 I'm physically cold,
when my temp is 99 or higher I'm too hot.
I drink very weak hot decaf tea all year long [my nephrologist calls it
colored water]. I am usually cold, but this last winter I just slept with a
very light blanket. I wear shorts all year long to make getting dressed and
undressed easier on my helpers. I wear long socks, leg warmers and a blanket on
my lower half and a coat, shawl like scarf over and around my head, I make sure
my ears, nose and mouth is covered when I go out in the cold.
I do have issues when it gets hot. I only drink hot tea indoors. [I'm a sun
person], I use a cold wet towel around the back of my neck, I constantly keep
wiping my face with a cold cloth, when possible I ask whom ever is around
to use a spray bottle to mist me down and I drink cold Propel water. I don't
drink plain water, my Dr. has me drink Propel to help me keep from getting
dehydrated and it helps keep me from getting light headed and too low blood
pressure [I run low normally anyway].
I've been a quad since 10/27/1978, I was in the hospital for 3 months got
sores on both on my heels, tailbone and both shoulder blades. I then went into
rehab for 3 months, the sores got healed within 1/2 of the time there [hubbard
tank w/ betadine added].
My 2nd sore I got was in 1983 at my tailbone [not caused by sitting], it
required surgery [skin-flap no. 1] 2 weeks in hosp. back up in w/c 16-18 hrs. a
day.
In 2000 I got 2 p/s one under each butt check at the underwear line,
the one on right side healed; the left had to be operated on [May 2001
skin-flap no. 2] 2 weeks in hosp. and I was gradually aloud up in w/c 6-10 hrs.
a day [I'd push it a couple of extra hrs. on special occasions].
2003 p/s on tailbone wound care Dr. said he could get me healed no
surgery, unless the tailbone has gotten infected. MRI done [May 2003 skin-flap
no. 3], but this time they removed my coccyx [tailbone] and sacrum [bone above
tailbone] had to be removed, was given 2 units of blood, in the hosp. 17 days
and in nursing home for 18 days. I was aloud up in w/c gradually up 20 mins a
day to no longer than 8 hrs. [on special occasions maybe 1-2 hrs. longer].
2008 I got a p/s under left butt check [again] went to wound care center
from Feb. to Sept.. On Sept. 24th I had surgery [skin-flap no. 4]  I was in the
hosp. 5 days allowed to come home, stay in bed, get turned frequeintly [yawl
right]  I've been given permission to get up in my w/c 3 times

Re: [QUAD-L] SP Discomfort

2008-08-13 Thread David K. Kelmer
Neuropathic pain is a complex, chronic pain state that usually is accompanied
by tissue injury. With neuropathic pain, the nerve fibers themselves may be
damaged, dysfunctional or injured. These damaged nerve fibers send incorrect
signals to other pain centers. The impact of nerve fiber injury includes a
change in nerve function both at the site of injury and areas around the injury.

I have chosen not to think too much about the anniversary of my accident,
but I have decided to embrace the first time I was able to breathe for 24 hours
without any ventilator assistance.
I was shooting for my birthday, August 4, but I managed to breathe on my own
for the entire day on August 6 (today) 13 years ago. In fact, I have only been
put on a ventilator once since then to aid me in getting out secretions. Well,
I do stuck on the end of a ventilator hose daily in order to get some
medication into my lungs, but I didn't start doing that until February 2007.
I had planned on doing something today, but that didn't work out. Tomorrow I
will definitely doing something worthwhile.

Just so we can all get on the same page, here are the verifiable facts on
oil
  supplies, production, and gasoline demand.
In January of this year, the U.S. used 4% less petroleum than we did a year
ago. (Oil demand was down 3.2% in February.) Furthermore, demand has been
falling slowly since July of last year. Ronald Bailey of Reason Online has
pointed out that worldwide production of oil has risen 2.5% in the first
quarter, while worldwide demand has grown by only 2%. Production is expected
to increase by 3.3% in the second quarter, and by as much as 4.1% by the
third
quarter. The net result is that the U.S. daily buffer for oil production
against demand, which was a paltry 1.5 million barrels as recently as 2005,
is
now up to 3 million barrels in excess capacity today.

But, there is a shortage in acres planted of rice. This year farmers are
growing corn and soy beans for the fuel. The price of gas didn't go up during
the last six weeks. The value of the dollar dropped. Can you say, INFLATION.
You may wonder why this obscene tax was levied on those with fixed incomes?
Why
has there been no attempt to cut spending of military dollars in parts of the
world that our military isn't even in? Why has welfare tripled this year. Not
welfare for people, but welfare for corporations. We deposit billions of
dollars into numbered swiss bank accounts and it comes under foreign aid.
Will anyone ask these questions at a presidential debate?

Hi Tod,

It's good to see the Teach (as Breezy would say) posting on the Q-List
again. I have used all three kinds of catheters, and have found that my body
will immediately reject a Teflon catheter. The latex ones will work, but they
don't last long before I need to change them. The silicone coated latex ones
work best for me too, in my experience.

  Hi Gina Quadius,

I know what you mean. I had similar issues with catheters as both of you. The

redness after a week or two.

After some reading I found there were two types opf latex catheters... teflon
coated and silicone coated. Most warehouse-type places send whatever they
happen to grab when they pull your order. I fopund I had to specify silicone
coated latex NOT silicone, not latex and not teflon coated. HAS TO BE silicone
coated.

I don't know who you get your supplies from but I've found Edgepark to great at
sending monthly orders without having to call all the time (unless something
changes) and almost always getting it right! And never any problems with
returns when they do goof.

The main reason I asked about the type of catheter is because I discovered
about 10 years ago that I am allergic to the silicone products. I first
noticed it when I had a silicone trach to which my skin became adhered. Ear
nose and throat had to rip the trach right out of my neck and finally got
them to agree to do reconstructive surgery about five or six years later.
When I have a silicone catheter in my body, my bladder spasms profusely, I
feel like I have a terrible UTI, the stoma tries to adhered itself to the
catheter, and there are excessive amounts of calcification on the end of the
catheter when it is removed. I now only use latex catheters with a little bit
 of silicone coating.
According to my care providers, this is an abnormal allergy, but I thought
I'd let you know about it since you're, seems to close around your catheter.

How much sailing are you putting into the bulb? I used to have a problem with

Hi Dana,

I bought a Plan from Humana the first year it was offered, and I am really
pleased with how much its done. Just this past Tuesday I choked while taking
my Noon Vitamin C, and aspirated it into my lung. I called my home-health care
nurse and she told me what to watch for, and told me she'd be out Wed. morning.
When she got here, she took one listen to my lungs and had my Dr. order a
portable X-Ray. They were here Noon Wed, and my Dr. read the film by 5PM, and
started me on 750mg Cephalosporin 4X a day and an injection of Ceftriaxone
intramuscularly (into a muscle) for 10 days. I have no idea what this would
have cost without my Humana, but it was $1.00 per shot and $3.00 for the
Cephalosporin. I KNOW that's a small price for saving my life! Stay Strong.

I quote from one of my statements in my last post, Once again, I am only

to be dictatorial or presumptuous with my statements.

Or perhaps I am mistaken. I was under the impression that a member of this
list still retained the freedom of expression.
I quote from another source. In a move entitled 'Uncommon Valor', a movie
that is dear to my heart because I served with many of my beloved brothers in
Vietnam. A statement from this movie was made by an actor named Sailor, who
said, Man,you don't ever quit.

Yes, yes, I've heard it all before, on how men like me are politically
incorrect for being involved in that crazy Asian war. I personally don't care,
even though the cause of my t-1 2 condition is from Agent Orange. All I'm
describing is what is best for me. I haven't and I never will quit trying. If
I drop something, and it takes me a half an hour to pick it up, who's going to
complain, or will the politically incorrect police come and arrest me? You say
that it's important to conserve your strength for the important things, well
struggling to exist everyday is my form of freedom, and that to me is the most
important thing in life.

Perhaps the prejudice on this list run the other way, and apparently I don't
qualify as being a legitimate quadriplegic, at least not on this list. I made
a mistake by joining, but that's ok, I make many mistakes. I'm sure there may
exist other lists such as this one, or maybe there isn't. Either way it
doesn't make any difference.

I think I'm a lot like you on this issue. If I'm doing something that is

http://www.issue2008.com/campaign/candidates/barack-obama-candidates/

Church: Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, of which Obama is a member.

A February 6 Chicago Tribune article reported that conservative critics have
seized on Trinity's 12-point Black Value System, especially the portion
relating to 'middleclassness,' as evidence that Obama is a divisive candidate
who rejects mainstream American values and is primarily focused on the black
community. Carlson pointed to the disavowal of the pursuit of
'middleclassness' in the church's tenets, calling the church's mission a
racially exclusive theology and a theology that ministers to one group of
people, based on race. Carlson claimed that Trinity's theology is racially
exclusive and wrong, adding that it's hard to call that Christianity.
Carlson also stated that Trinity's Black Value System calls for
congregants to be 'soldiers for black freedom.' In fact, Trinity encourages
parishioners to be soldiers for Black freedom and the dignity of all humankind
[emphasis added]. The Tribune said that the church's value system was
adopted in 1981 to hold black Christians accountable for taking care of their
own and for continuing to fight oppression. Further, the Tribune reported that
according to Melissa Harris-Lacewell, a professor of politics and
African-American studies at Princeton University, the 'disavowal of the
pursuit of middleclassness' is simply an argument against materialism and the
pursuit of the American standard of wealth. Many white Christian churches also
preach against materialism. http://mediamatters.org/items/200702090009

Re: [QUAD-L] spinal fusion

2008-01-15 Thread David K. Kelmer
Hi Stacy,

It sounds like your body is fighting a battle between the forces of nature
slowly bending your skeleton and the strength of steel. I wish I could give
you a better answer, but that's what it sounds like. After I broke my right
femur in 1981, they put a titanium rod in the leg and wired both ends of the
break (it was a V shaped 4in break on two sides of the bone). After a year, or
more, the femur was healed great and they Surgeons decided that since I didn't
walk on the bone, they could leave the rod in and not have to do surgery on the
leg again. It sounded like the best thing to me at the time. In early 1987 I
started getting little sore on my right leg. Went to a Orthopedic who ran a
bunch of tests. The outcome was because the rod had been left in the bone it
caused Osteomyelitis to develop. Two years and three surgeries trying to clean
the bone, and they had to remove the leg to keep the infection out of the rest
of my body. The new surgeon said my spine would
start to curve because my balance was off. He said he could slow the curve
down by putting titanium rods up and down my spine.

Wow, that was when my spine started curving because I did my rehab in a power
chair, and left.

You have your doctor look for bone pain in you. With that metal your bones
will hurt , especially in the cold. Stay strong.

For those of you who dont know, I had to have my spine fused in several places
last May. Well it really began hurting last week like something was rubbing.
After the fusion was done, I had to have a screw removed b/c it was too close
to my aeorta so I worried something was shifting and went to my doctor. My
neurosurgeon is out of town so I went to my pain doc bc he used to be a
neurosurgeon at the University of MD. We had xrays done and he doesnt see
anything that would require me to have surgery, but I am in unbelievable pain
to the point I can barely move and its in more than one spot.

Has anyone else had any experience with the rods rubbing a bit or a screw? I
am hoping after taking it easy for awhile the pain will go down but it has been
getting a little bit worse every day and today it's about the same. It doesnt
hurt as much if I am laying down on my side without moving too suddenly but it
does hurt more to sit up and hurts a lot to adjust myself while laying down the
first time for the day. I've been staying in bed a lot hoping I can get the
pain down as pain meds arent helping very much.

If anyone has any ideas on how to try to get the pain withstandable, I would
apppreciate it. I have 3 cages and rods from top of tspine. One cage replaces
T 4,5,6,7 and maybe 8; another replaces T 11,12; and another replaces L 4,5,
and maybe 6. There is about 7 or 8 discs missing in all. In the lumbar
section there are a couple of sets of rods with rods next to rods. Lots of
metal!!! I tried to put a pic in but it couldnt be delivered.

Anyone else have this much metal?

Re: [QUAD-L] Diverticulitis

2008-01-14 Thread David K. Kelmer
Hi Q,

Here is a great Site for info on Diverticulitis. Hope it helps. Stay
strong.

Diverticulitis develops from a condition called diverticulosis. If you're
older than age 40, it's common for you to have diverticulosis — small, bulging
pouches (diverticula) in your digestive tract. In the United States, more than
50 percent of people older than 60 have diverticula. Although diverticula can
form anywhere, including in your esophagus, stomach and small intestine, most
occur in your large intestine. Because these pouches seldom cause any problems,
you may never know you have them.
Self-care Here are things you can do to help prevent or slow the progression
of diverticular disease:

Eat more fiber. High-fiber foods, such as fresh fruits and vegetables and
whole grains, soften waste material and help it pass more quickly through your
colon. This reduces pressure inside your digestive tract. Aim for 25 to 30
grams of fiber each day. An apple or 1/2 cup of spinach contains 2 to 3 grams
of fiber, and 1/2 cup of baked beans contains about 6 grams. Try to substitute
fruits, vegetables and grain products for foods high in fat. Be sure to add
fiber gradually to avoid bloating, abdominal discomfort and gas. If it's
difficult for you to consume 25 to 30 grams of fiber every day, consider using
a fiber supplement, such as psyllium (Metamucil, Nature's Way) or
methylcellulose (Citrucel). Although commonly recommended, there's little
evidence that avoiding eating seeds or nuts prevents recurrent attacks of
diverticulitis.
Drink plenty of fluids. Fiber works by absorbing water and increasing the
soft, bulky waste in your colon. But if you don't drink enough liquid to
replace what's absorbed, fiber can be constipating.
Respond to bowel urges. When you need to use the bathroom, don't delay.
Delaying bowel movements leads to harder stools that require more force to pass
and increased pressure within your colon.
Exercise regularly. Exercise promotes normal bowel function and reduces
pressure inside your colon. Try to exercise at least 30 minutes on most days.

Well, I have been suffering with bowel problems often on since July. It
seems as if I need to defecate so often it is quite disconcerting, at least it
feels that way. I have also had a problem with the stool being too loose. My
doctor suggested using oxybutynin after my bowel programs to eliminate some of
the spasms in my bowels and that seems to have worked pretty well.
Unfortunately I still have a tremendous amount of cramps often on and it is
difficult for me to plan much of anything any longer.

After my fifth visit to the doctor, he finally realized that I have
diverticulitis which was discovered in my colonoscopy back in July. You know
what happens when you assume. Well he apologized because he had assumed that I
was told by the doctor in charge of the colonoscopy that I had diverticulitis.
Anyway, I have modified my diet somewhat and this has helped for the majority
of the time.

Does anybody else on here suffer from diverticulitis and if so what type of
things have you eliminated from your diet.
So far I have tried to get away from anything that has nuts, seeds, and I most
definitely cannot be grapes, strawberries, cherries, and some other things I'm
forgetting right now.

Hi Jim,

That is great news! Way to go! You must be ready to dance a jig. When I
started working on getting my chair back in 2006, I told the supplier that
either I got a chair that actually worked to meet my needs or I would not buy a
new chair just to be buying one. They always seemed to find a way to get what
I NEEDED approved. After test rides, reading, and talking to others, I decided
on the Quantum 6000 from Pride. I really like the torque my Q6 has when I need
to cover rough terrain, and the Mid-wheel drive when I'm indoors. I'm glad
that I never let my standards down and settled for second choice. Stay strong.

Since the summer of 2005 I have been in the process of trying to
qualify for an Omega Trac wheelchair. I had to try different manufacturers
front and mid-wheel drive (I have a rear wheel drive) chairs and explain why
they would not suit my needs to Medicare, medical assistance and Blue Cross
Blue Shield. After being denied by all three because they said it was not
medically necessary to have such an expensive share I started my appeal
process. I wrote a five-page appeal letter, with pictures and was surprised
that Blue Cross Blue Shield had reversed their decision because of my
compelling appeal letter and approved the Omega Trac chair for me. On New
Year's Day, my son went down and got the mail from New Year's Eve and there was
a letter in there from medical assistance. The letter went on for two
paragraphs explaining why they feel that this chair was not medically necessary
for me. The third paragraph then stated why they would approve the chair and
pick up the out-of-pocket costs that I would need to pay if I just went with
Blue Cross Blue Shield. I read that last paragraph several times and was
absolutely flabbergasted that medical assistance changed their minds. If it
wasn't for Kiersten from National Seating Mobility, I do not think that this
would have happened. The Omega Trac should be ordered next week but I'm really
not going to believe it until I'm sitting in it because you never know what can
happen.

Yesterday, Friday, I received a call from the appeals judge confirming that
medical assistance reversed their decision and approved my chair. She is going
to sign all the legal documents and send me a copy.

For those of you that are wondering why I went with such a large chair like
the Omega Trac here's my reasons. I live in the country near Duluth, MN which
is hilly and not very conducive to standard wheelchairs especially in the
wintertime. I'm a large man that likes the stability of the Omega Trac
compared to my Invacare especially when transversing hills and uneven ground.
I need a solid platform for driving around the hills of Duluth and I own my own
home in the country and have been stuck to many times in my driveway during and
after a snow along with not being able to go in my yard unless somebody is with
me.
  The bottom line is freedom.

I guess the moral of the story is to find the company that you feel
comfortable dealing with and also never take no for an answer until all avenues
and appeals are exhausted. Carefully read all documentation and make sure all
your I's and T's are dotted and crossed.

Ibots are not covered in Ohio because nobody seems to be able to show a
medical necessity for it. I don't think you can even get a peremobile in Ohio
using Medicaid. On the other end of the spectrum, they want you to prove why
you cannot use a Pride Jazzy or a Quicky. I understand Pride is working on a
tilt in space system and a recline, Maybe they will revive the Everest
Jennings name. (They tried to stick a paraplegic into a hopped up 4wheel
scooter over at the rehab center) I feel any upturn in Medicaid will have to
come from the low end products outperforming expectations. The space shuttle
works most of the time and it is built by the lowest bidders. I've always felt
the quickies were a low cost quality product. Anyone else got any feedback on
wheelchairs that Medicaid has funded or won't fund.
(You aren't suppose to say they won't pay for stuff unless they have been
rejected and no product is rejected solely because of price.) What BS!
Someone set me straight?
We spent 70 years spouting about how stupid Communists were with 5 year plans
and now we go out of our way to create a health care system that imitates an
economic
plan that failed for the exact same lack of ingenuity and practicality.

Hi Jim,

I was lucky to have a PT that advised me not to listen to the ''Experts'' and
to listen to my inner-self in all areas. She was so right. One of my first
insights was not to tie my sexuality to my erections. I was getting erections
with a brush of a nurse's hand, or a position change, but my sexuality was
buried deeper in my mind, and it would take more concentration to learn how to
reach it. My wife and I started working on the mental side of our sexuality
before I left rehab. We did a lot of talking listening to each other early
on, and started using what we learned for some erotic game playing at rehab.
By not worring as much about my erections at that point, we were able to find
ways to give, and to get, enough sexual pleasure to each other to encourage us
on with our learning SCI Sex. Today I talk, listen, fiddle around, flirt,
play, and work around women. I've learned I can say as much to a lady with my

Hi Q,

It's good to see you're posting again. We can always use your insightful
view of life here. My son and his family joined my mom, my brother, and myself
in a day of family fun for Thanksgiving! My son can smoke a great turkey, and
my daughter-n-law makes some fine dressing for it. My two granddaughters take
care of us having fun. ;-)

2007-11-06 Thread David K. Kelmer
Hi Dianne,

When I was in the ICU at hospital, I would set-off their blood/oxygen machine
when I would fall asleep. My Doctor looked at the charts and put me on oxygen
while I was there, but said my oxygen would drop just a little when I slept,
but not enough to be worried. Since I'm always awake for ''tests'', they always
come back okay. We wouldn't even know my oxygen level drop when I sleep, if
they hadn't caught it in ICU. It's in my file now, and my doctor would give me
oxygen for my nights, if I wanted him to, but I'm just watching how I feel at
night right now.

 Dave,
DO NOT FLUSH YOUR BLADDER WITH BLEACH! Because of bleaches
toxicity as an internally used chemical, I was inspired to write
the thread a few weeks ago asking if any of you prevent urine from
the bed bag tube from running back into your bladder. A local
nursing home cleans the bed bags with bleach and water then
reattaches it to the SP catheter. Everyone in the home has awful
and persistant infections while taking assorted anti biotics
daily. I personally called the doctors of record about 2 patients
that were showing signs of fatal reactions to macrodantin. (I'm
amazed nurses are so afraid of doctors that they won't do such
 things.)
Maybe its in the hippa rules not do anything to save Med/Med patients.
So, here is a new trick to try if you have an SP catheter. Attach
a small leg bag to your catheter and leave it there. Do Not
disconect it. When transferring bed bags and other leg bags,
simply attach them to the drain side of the permanent leg bag.
Goal: Adding an extra barrier to germs and chemicals and reducing
 infections.

My big question is, why do you flush your bladders? Don't you
change your catheter once a month?
Even when folks say they use sterile techniques with replacement
of catheters, there are new bacteria introduced. If you are as
incredibly sterile about your technique, the best you can achieve
 is to be clean.

 good luck and best wishes,
 john
