[RBW] First weekend with the Quickbeam

2018-03-06 Thread ted
I wanted to buy a QB, but they were out of my size and Kevin basically refused
to sell me the next size down. When the S1s were announced I immediately pre
ordered mine. I’ve been very happy with it.
I’d say the differences between the two are cosmetic, with the exception of
slightly different rack mount braze on depending on which run of QBs.
Anybody could easily make a case for preferring any of them based on those
differences, but the biggest thing is which can you find in your size. They are
all great bikes.

[RBW] First weekend with the Quickbeam

2018-03-06 Thread Philip Williamson
I’m very happy for you! I was watching that bike. Great build kit.

I’ve been using my Quickbeam fixed for my commute, and it hauls, both lit’rally
and figuratively. With the basket, I’ve stopped for groceries on the way home
the last two nights, and it feels like a goer, even with a moderate front load.
It just feels well dialed right now. I did just replace the wheels, cranks,
barrage and brakes. Maybe that’s why.

As far as QB vs S1 controversy, on paper the S1 must be the winner.

[RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal me

2018-03-06 Thread Deacon Patrick
Fantastic, Bill. I’d recommend not focusing so much on weight or waist size but
on feel (energy, capacity, endurance, stability, joy, delight...). It’s
fascinating to me how much floor living keeps the core solid and strong and
thus thicker. As I’ve mentioned before, I am ketogenic (via the Perfect Health
Diet), with 80-90% of calories from fat. I don’t carry food on all day rides,
and though I carry food on bikepacking trips I often don’t eat it. I
intermitant fast 16-18 hours daily. I’ve been stable at 200 pounds on this
basic approach for quite a few years now. But then I eat by feel just as I ride
by feel. Grin.

Nice write up, and good work! I know I feel better with a diet aligned with the

I have a Simpleone that was damaged in shipping. I shipped it back to Riv and
they repainted it (hunqa green with cream details). They didn’t have Simpleone
decals so they used Quickbeam decals and badge. Is it a Simpleone? Is it a
Quickbeam? (Does it matter?). I think that is a good reflection on Rivs
feelings about the differences between the QB and SO— they are the same bike.

I have yet to build it up. #sad

2018-03-06 Thread tc
Ian A,
I believe the S1 and QB geometry is the same; however the largest S1
offered was a 62.

Regarding differences, the S1 was made in Taiwan, has a kickstand plate,
and some (all?) came with cream accents. I've not found anything
definitive on the tubing used, but some say the QB's tubing was a tad
lighter.

My (used to be Ben's) S1 has 42mm Continental Contact Speed tires and would
easily take a 44.

[RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal met

2018-03-06 Thread Bill Lindsay
I kind of went through a couple plateau things. I worked up towards that
200k brevet, and that night, immediately after finishing the 200k, my wife
and kids took me out to birthday dinner, and I feasted. The next day, my
wife hosted a lobster party for a bunch of our friends, and I feasted again
on lobster rolls and had my share of beers as well. Those two days were
definite cheat days, around Feb 10, and I had some catching up to do. That
catch up period up until now went pretty rapidly, and so I almost want to
maintain at 160 and try to move my body composition around a little bit. I
have access to two scales, which both report my weight within a pound or
two from each other, but they are WAY different from each other in body fat
% calculations. The office scale says I'm around 28% and the one at home
says I'm around 15%. I believe the 15% number more. Anyway, on that scale
I want to work on maintaining 160 and dropping my body fat %. If I could
get to 12%, that would be pretty good.

YES! Intermittent fasting has been the result of breaking that "eat when
you're bored" thing. A couple times a week I'll skip dinner entirely, and
I wake up the next morning feeling fine. I have a strong urge for coffee
in the morning, and I'll eat breakfast because it seems like a good idea to
eat some breakfast. A 12 hour fast is quite easy. 18-20 hours is not a
big deal either.

[RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal met

2018-03-06 Thread Ash
Nice work Bill! Keep it up! The story is quite inspiring. Thanks for
sharing.

I have read many books on this subject. While I understood and bought into
the theories, none of them quite caused me to make lifestyle changes that
were necessary to get in better shape. I'm 5'10", medium frame. For
several years stayed in 160-168lb range. Always wanted to get down to
145-150 zone. After reading EBDJ last summer, for the first time I went
below 160. Hovering around 155 these days. I think it is the style in
which Grant has explained certain key points that has made my new habits
stick. Being a vegetarian, no bacon for me. But staying low on carbs and
switching to HIT style workouts have helped me a great deal. Feels like
I'm on track to dip below 150lb in next 3-4 months.

[RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal met

2018-03-06 Thread Jim S.
I love this topic - for me, EBDJ was revelatory, to say the least.

Then in January I found this:

https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Guide-Fasting-Intermittent-Alternate-Day/dp/1628600012/ref=sr_1_1/143-4133792-7662413?ie=UTF8=1520375629=8-1=complete+guide+to+fasting+jason+fung

If you're already an EBDJ fat burner, and want to take the next step, it's
not all that hard to just take a couple of days a week and not eat at all.

It sounds crazy, and miserable, but it isn't. I'm convinced that this is
what our bodies are supposed to be doing.

At any rate, I recommend at least reading some of the book before rejecting
fasting out of hand. It's really interesting.

[RBW] Re: Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal met

2018-03-06 Thread William R.
Good to hear Bill, and very inspirational. I often wonder why EBDJ doesn't
come up here more often. I'm sure most of us have read it, or at least are
aware of it. However, I am also aware of how incendiary the subject can be,
its definitely personal for many. With that said... Personally I've
struggled with it. It is something that is almost constantly on my mind and
something that I would very much like to be successful with. I'm heavier
than I should be for sure and I yearn to live the healthier lifestyle that
EBDJ promotes. Yet, I keep failing and falling off and gaining what I've
lost back. And I bought and read the book right when it came out! How many
years has it been? I was also reading a lot of the stuff that Grant was
talking about before EBDJ came out like Gary Taubes' books. So I've been
trying and failing for some time now. I don't know... there's a switch in
my head that needs to be duct taped off or permanently removed! I keep
trying though and what you have written here helps. Good on ya.

[RBW] Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal met

2018-03-06 Thread Ian A
Encouraging stuff Bill. Turns out our goal weight is about the same (I'm a hair
under 5'10" and just turned 50). I'm over my goal weight by some ~ 15-20lb, but
am heading in the right direction, so your post is appreciated.

I was between 150-160 until I turned 44 and got a "proper job" six years ago.
Now I'd be pleased to see the scale drop under 160 - it's a ways off yet. Until
then, the goal pants will remain in the closet.

[RBW] Eat Bacon Don't Jog--Goal set, goal met

2018-03-06 Thread Bill Lindsay
Over the last few years, I've been a reasonably low-carb person. I
generally steer clear of pizza, rice, bread, but my discipline has been far
from perfect. Things were working out fine, in that I wasn't gaining the 1
pound a year that people tell me I'm supposed to be gaining throughout my
40s. I've been holding at 180, which was acceptable but not ideal. This
winter I decided: I've spent long enough treading water as a 180 pounder.
I'm a 155 pounder with 25 pounds of unnecessary cargo. I decided I was
going to drop 20 pounds, and this past week I've made it there, dropping
below 160 for maybe the first time this century. There have been a few
changes that might have contributed to success. I'm drinking a lot less
beer, and a lot less booze in general. My exercise routine has included
much more short and intense efforts as a coach of the high school mountain
bike team. I've also done more to think about the way that I tend to think
about food. Just like with drinking alcohol, I find that I have the urge to
eat when I'm bored, or have downtime. I've tried to keep myself occupied
more, and I've endeavored to break that mental connection so I don't start
snacking every time there's a calm moment.

A few weeks back I did a 200k with SFRandonneurs, and I really noticed a
difference in my appetite. For the first time, I kind of had to force
myself to eat. I had packed four Lara Bars for a 9 hour ride, and I went
ahead and ate one at 50k, at 100k and at 150k, just because it seemed like
a good idea to put some food in. I wonder if I've reached some level of
fat-burning, and have largely broken the sugar-dependence where I don't get
super ravenous.

So, Winter is almost over and we haven't fought about EBDJ all winter long,
I don't think. It's a datapoint of one but I'm doing fine with very little
bread, rice, etc. I enjoy a cut up apple with almond butter for desert. I
plop a huge scoop of coconut oil in my morning coffee. I'm eating lots of
roasted veggies and raw veggies. I'll throw a fried egg on any meal. I
eat lots of nuts and seeds. I make bacon on Saturday mornings, typically.
My 34 inch waist pants no longer fit. I just bought a couple pairs of 32s
and one pair of 30s. The 30s are snug, and I call them "the motivator" to
get me the rest of the way to 155, where I'll probably stop and hold. Set
a goal and make it happen.

Bill-

Salsa measures their bars pretty accurately; a 46 cm Cowchipper is 46 cm
between the center of the bar at the top of each drop. However, since the
bars flare outward throughout the drop curve, the brake hoods are already
at like 50 cm, and the ends of the bars are at like 54 cm.

On the 42 cm Cowchippers, the brake hoods are around 46 cm wide and the bar
ends are around 50 cm. That feels better to me on an
all-rounder/gravel/cross bike. Wider might feel better on a drop-MTB or
monster cross.

[RBW] Re: Alternative Bars for the Clem

2018-03-06 Thread tc
Thanks, masmojo. It's a Nitto UI-12 quill stem with a 60mm reach. I
ordered mine on ebay from a Japanese seller called "hobby_japan". Took
about 10-14 days to get it after placing the order (I'm in NC).

This link

will hopefully take you to an ebay page with the different sizes they have
in stock:

[RBW] Re: Albastache Cockpit Tweaks

2018-03-06 Thread Bruce d
I just put albastache bars on my new hillborne, after using noodles on all my
other bikes. I set the brake levers quite a bit below horizontal, and find
that position much more ergonomic when grabbing the brakes. My wrist is in a
nice straight position, and my fingers are lined up nicely with the levers.
What I lost is the extended position you described, with the hands gripping the
levers in front of the bars. However, that position is unsafe in my book, as
your hands aren't prevented from being bounced off the levers if you hit a good
bump. I like my hands wrapped around the bars for safety, much like being in
the drops on noodles as opposed to on the hoods. That said, I really enjoy the
bars on my hill borne, the upright position at the back is great for cruising,
and being in the bends is quite comfortable, too. Mine are set lightly higher
that the seat, and I may drop them down to seat level.

2018-03-06 Thread Leaf Slayer
I had the Cowchippers, 46cm, on my Vaya a while back and never really liked
the way they felt on that bike. They seemed too wide. Like wider than the
48cm Noodles on my LHT. I did like the way they felt in the drops on
descents. I was also entertaining thoughts of that bike being a go fast all
road machine. Something about that bike ultimately never felt right and I
sold it. I think the Cowchippers will work well on the Ogre. If this works
well I could see going to the next lever and setting it up with a Crust
Towel Rack, a 66cm wide drop bar.

I know Grant has moved away from drops but I still kept expecting Riv to
put out a short reach shallow drop bar of their own.

Love the bike train!

Having Riv as part of your 'neighborhood' is a really neat thing. I'm always
impressed by the stories Bay Area folks tell about their casual drop-ins at Riv
