Re: Version 10.2 and gmail
Hello Thomas, I fixed this problem for a new gmail account. The protocol type on the very first screen has to be "IMAP or POP" instead of "Auto". That is new. If I leave that at "Auto", it makes an IMAP account. It used to be the case that you selected IMAP or POP on the next screen. What I haven't found yet is what I need to do in The Bat for an existing gmail POP account to make it work again since Google broke** almost every e-mail client earlier this year. It is rare that I send mail from a gmail address. I will create a new account in The Bat when I need it for my other gmail address. I don't need to actually retrieve gmail in The Bat, I set it up a long time ago to forward everything arriving at my gmail addresses to an address on my own domain as "web login required" every so often in the error logs was driving me crazy. **Gmail may get broken again as I have started receiving mails with "keep your phone handy" Adrian Monday, October 24, 2022, 5:21:16 AM, Thomas Fernandez ML thomas.f...@gmx.net wrote: > I am using Gmail and POP under v10.2. Version 10.2 and gmail
While I can make gmail work with Version 10.2 of The Bat, it seems to insist on using IMAP instead of POP. Is there any way to fix this? I don't particularly need to retrieve gmail directly in The Bat as I forward everything sent to my gmail address to an e-mail address on one of my own domains AND delete from Google servers, but there are occasions when I need to send mail from my gmail address and I certainly don't want to start web browsers to do this. Re: Upgrading to version 10
There are two versions, one with and one without autoupdate. Whichever one you use, it overwrites everything in "program files\The Bat". If you use the version WITHOUT autoupdate, it is no different than upgrading from previous versions. But the one with autoupdate installs files in an "AppData" directory of whichever Windows user you login with rather than a subdirectory of" Program Files" It took some fiddling to get Version 9 and Version 10 installed simultaneously, but there is a very useful REG option for the command line in the shortcut of Version 10. I actually decided on the Version 10 without autoupdate and installed it in the usual "program files" directory. It is not difficult to use "run as administrator". Re: Gmail
The problem with gmail is that changes in May have broken almost every e-mail client. Gmail needs OAUTH. This is supported in Version 10 of The Bat. If you look in the account log for your gmail address , you will see "username and password not accepted" Note "not accepted". That is different from "invalid" or "not valid". Unless you actually need to send mail from a gmail address, just forward everything that arrives at your gmail address to an e-mail address on another domain. www.gmail.com. Re: Is my legacy TB! version usable with the upcoming Google security changes please?
Version 10 works, but you have to jump through some hoops with a web browser when you first add a gmail address to The Bat. Unless you actually need to send from a gmail address, you can fix retrieval of mail at www.gmail.com and forwarding everything (and delete from Google servers afterwards) to an e-mail address on a domain that doesn't break every e-mail client on the planet. Re: mark as read
If you are using POP, you won't even see the spam folder unless you append "/spam" to the login username. If you are using IMAP, you need to remove the spam folder from what it accesses. Every three minutes to check for mail is excessive, but if it's IMAP, you get the mails as soon as they arrive anyway irrespective of how often you check. Try using Mail Dispatcher so that you only get the headers and can decide which ones to actually retrieve. Just append "/spam" to your username to access the junk / spam folder instead of the INBOX. Re: Changes to GMail
I have had "forward to POP and delete gmail's copy" already activated since creating gmail addresses. "allow less secure apps" was sufficient. But even with that, I was still plagued with "web login required" if my IP address for the actual Internet connection changed. Today I have added "forward to a specific e-mail address and delete gmail's copy". I should have done this long ago to avoid that "web login required" error. Is there a way to disable periodic checking for all e-mail accounts in TheBat Version 9 without starting the program? These are in the "Options" of the Properties for each e-mail account. I presume these are in the individual "account" files, but which file extension is it? I am contemplating restoring a backup made on my first PC to my second PC, but I don't want that second PC to start retrieving any mail when the restore finishes unless I do it myself manually for specific e-mail accounts. My other option is to do a new installation of TheBat (it is a different version from that on my first PC) and then start adding a few new e-mail accounts that do not exist on the first PC) one at a time and copy the common filters from the first PC. Re: GMAIL account using The Bat!

I only used the gmail website to create the account in the first place and occasionaly for "website login required" errors (see below). You need to look in the settings there and enable POP. In The Bat, just create an account like any other. SMTP = smtp.gmail.com secure to regular (startTLS) port 587 POP = pop.gmail.com secure to dedicated (TLS) port 995 Keep an eye on the account log. If your IP address for the actual Internet connection changes, you get "website login required" errors. That will probably happen the first time. Then just login at www.gmail.com and logout again. Then your email client will work. You might have to set "allow access for insecure apps" somewhere when actually logged in to gmail in a web browser, but if this happens you should only have to do it once. It gets particularly irritating when you use the SMTP£ server from your own domain, but your actual Internet connection is not your fixed line DSL at home. In those cases (e.g. hotel wifi, SIM card in a 3G/4G router), if you can find what the SMTP server is, then port 25 works, but some don't seem to have one. A VPN fixes the problem. Windows 10 has a nasty habit of resetting file associations to the "Microsoft defaults". I am having this issue with PDFs. First they get reassociated with Edge, Look for EdgeBlocker - this stops Edge starting, but then they get reassociated with TWINUI after some unpredictable time of setting it back to what it should be. If I leave those common filters as active and "share with all", but NOT manual and I don't check "manual filters only", then I see the messages getting trapped, but the actions don't get performed when I right click on that directory and select "refilter" If I set the filters to manual and select "use manual filters only", then the filters work when I refilter that "not sorted" directory. Maybe I need a "catch-all" as the last of the common filters. Perhaps there is something left over in the individual mail accounts. I will try deleting every filter from those individual accounts and hope nothing still ends up in theire respective inboxes. Common filters is the logical place. Session log for all mail accounts
Is there a way of looking at least in the last session (ideally all sessions) at the account logs for all accounts in one place without having to go to each mail account individually? I am particularly interested in finding out whether any "connection to host broken" errors occurred. This is completely random. Sometimes there are not any, other times an account that worked the last time has one and vice versa. With SMTP, at least there is an immediate window showing that the send failed and which account it was, but with POP there is no warning at all. The "resend" option only seems to be in the "Message" menu. It does not seem to be visible by right clicking on the actual message. Apart from that issue, I've never had issues in actually retrieving mails with 30 MB (and more) file attachments. Amazing how many people attach, for example, twenty different files rather than putting all 20 in ONE Zip or RAR- Adrian Current version is 6.6 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

This means changing the SMTP server address accordingly in each email account. I need to test this, but that means the CryptoAPI should work if I do that. Adrian ... All I can do here is OK or cancel. The other options are visible but all greyed out. I can even see that certificate in the account log whether I change nothing or check CryptoAPI instead of internal. I have four domains from the same ISP. The certificate is the same, but it's four different SMTP servers, none of which of course match the certificate. Surely there has to be an easier way than creating address book entries for each email account and importing the certificate into each of those. Import root certificate
My ISP sent me this: According to an online research, your mail client The Bat does not include the root certificate for the StartCOM certificate authority - which is rather strange as they are neither new nor uncommon, I have a download link, but how do I import the certificate into The Bat? Session log Version 6
I know there is an account log for each email address, but is there a log that shows all the activity for all accounts in one place whether only the last check mail or send mail session or even all since the last time the log was reset? With more than a dozen email addresses, it's starting to get tedious having to look at each account one at a time to see if there were any problems. Ideally on a separate disk (I can do this on one of my laptops, but the newer ones don't have physical space for a second hard disk unless you lose the CD/DVD drive), but at the very least on a separate partition from the Windows partition. As for %email, it did actually point to the same place as Options, Preferences in The Bat. This surprised me as no matter how many times I set The Bat as default mail program, clicking on mailto on websites opens compose message in Eudora (if it is running) and starts Eudora if it isn't. Just set it up once to activate the POP server. Then you should never need to start a web browser again (until you create another gmail address). BUT there is still the problem of IP address. Every so often, you get web login required messages in your email client error logs and the only way to fix it is to actually login with a web browser. It is a real pain with VPNs (I use whichever one gets a connection that doesn't drop and it's not always the same one) or even IP addresses in different countries without a VPN at all. Perhaps they will in one of the next versions of The Bat. I've never understood the per account. Maybe it's useful for those who only have one or two email addresses strictly separated so that business-related and private only know one of them. In my case, I tend to filter on things other than which address the mail was actually sent to, usually from but sometimes subject. That means almost every filter is _one_ common filter, otherwise I have to copy and paste the same filter into every account. My immediate issue here is exceptional. I only used that address for LinkedIn groups and it bore absolutely no relation (apart from the domain) to any of my other email addresses. I thought I was safe with account-specific filters for this. Quite apart from LinkedIn ignoring whatever address you specify for the groups, the format of the messages changed as well so all the filter conditions were broken as well as not sending to the expected address. It's not only The Bat. I don't think any email client lets you edit filters using any text editor. Adrian .. Filter manipulation
Is there a way to copy and paste ALL filters (or at least more than one at a time) associated with a specific email address to common filtera?
