MAPI and white window - TB! not releasing control?

2004-08-20 Thread Maggie Meister
Hi Y'all,

A while back, I asked about a problem where some of my applications
freeze with white screens when I attempt to email from them - until
the email is sent. At that time I didn't get a response from anyone
here, so I'll try again. I've been in contact with the programmer of
one of the programs I use and have copied our interchange below.

MaggieIs the 'problem' on both sides? For instance, if there is
Maggiesomething small which can be tweaked for it to work from your side if
Maggiethey do such and such?

Possibly. From my recollection of the problems you described, the
main issue seems to be that when an application (Atlantis or
anything else) sends an email to the Bat using the MAPI calls, the
problem seems to be that the Bat does not return control to the
calling application until the email has actually been sent by the
user. This means that the calling application is locked up until
then. However, other email programs (such as Eudora and Outlook)
accept the email and return control to the calling application
straight away. The user is then free to edit/send/cancel the email
at their leisure whilst the calling application continues.

You could try sending the above paragraph to the Bat guys to see if they
 have any comments on it.

Also, when using MAPI to send these mails, it is necessary - for each
email - to type in a password. Is there a setting in TB! which permits
the password to stick?

Well, since I use them both a lot, those are the ones I see affected,

There was a small discussion with Marek a few months ago about this
MAPI problem, but it wasn't exactly as you described. I have had
problems with the MAPI interface with all programs from Esoteric
Technologies, and Rising Sun Solutions, as well as 40tude, where the
program freezes (window of program becomes blank, white screen). The
change with the last few betas of TB! added that the new email doesn't
even open. In 3.80.06, if you try to email a document from within Open
Office, the Microsoft product opens.

The fix mentioned in the TBBETA message you quoted talks about Outlook
which I don't have on my system, so I'm not sure how it could help me.
Thank you for trying, Mark. :-)

Address book and New Message Template

Hello Bats,

The Display Name is Joe and Sue.

their name is highlighted, all is well and the new message reads: Dear Joe and
Sue.

If I create a message by calling a new message from the main screen and using

How can I get the new message to read Dear Joe and Sue when using the nickname

RO so unless sandboxie
RO remaps directories and such you're out of luck.
RO That's why I didn't suggest running TB with another registry set.

Let me see if I understand: if I want to see one folder in an
old backup, I would need to restore the entire tbk. I could
restore this more safely if this were done on a
different/old/spare machine where I wouldn't have to worry about
either losing messages, but setups, too.

I thought sanboxie might be able to do it on the same machine if
it were capable of holding a copy of TB! to which I could
restore, then just dump the whole thing later. With the registry
involved though shudder maybe the separate machine is the
better deal for me.

Sandboxie may be useful for something else though. Neat concept!

Thanks again Roelof. Welcome back to the shackles.

Upgrading to v7.0.0.56 icon animation

2015-08-14 Thread Maggie Meister
Hello Bats,

My partner recently upgraded from 4.2 to the current version on a
Win 7 and noticed that the icon in the taskbar doesn't flap when
mail is received. The Bat! program window icon flaps and the
popup mini window has a flapping icon when hovering over the
taskbar icon, but not the taskbar icon itself. I checked to see
if the Preferences|General|icon animation box was checked and it
is. Do any of you know if this is Win7 behavior or is it
something changed from TBat4? We must have flapping!

BTW, a sigh of relief was heard when TheBat flawlessly brought
over all the old files to the 'new' machine. The old TB wasn't
even installed, only sitting in the downloads directory. Bringing
over the Thunderbird mails from the Linux machine however was
another story.

F4 not copying selected text in reply

2015-09-13 Thread Maggie Meister
Hello Bats,

Recently, I have encountered a situation where hitting the reply
does not include any of the text from the incoming mail.

Possibly related: selecting specific text, then hitting the F4
key does not copy the selected text into the reply message. This
behavior happens regardless of server of the incoming mails. I
have two recent mails where this occurs. Is this behavior from my
end or something they have done?

I've still got the same ol' setup, and I don't do auto updates of
anything.

Also, after my last email to the list, I noticed that my question
was posted twice. Am I missing something in preferences? Do you
all see two posts, or is it only on my system?

This is valuable. I have now changed the setting as I was indeed
keeping them in message bodies.

In the sorting of the account, I did not see where to paste the
filter. Also, I did not understand the syntax of the name of the
filter. Where is the text enclosed by $ to be pasted? Should it
be copied from 'beginFilter' and end with 'endFilter'? I have
never used a filter such as this, even though I have seen various
similar filters in the list over the years. Normally, my needs
are so simple that the macros one can choose for message
filtering are enough for my needs.

Lee was clearing out the cabin customer addresses in preparation

With the program, Everything, it was well-behaved, but it did not

It may prove useful in the future. Thanks for pointing me to it.

_Recuve_ did not give a choice to load on a dongle and it set

Thank you for bringing this question to the group. I have been

PGP and related encryption methods and I have some questions and
an observation.

1. I largely use text and not html to communicate. Using GnuPG
seems to take up lots of space. Do I remember correctly that
proper email etiquette advocated no more than 6 lines in a sig,
or, is that just a piece of the past that just stuck in my
memory?

2. How will correspondents using smart phones manage this
considering the screen size?

3. For correspondents who don't use a dedicated email program
such as TheBat! handle this if they are using web mail?

4. When replying without trimming in an email thread, this could
potentially take to not only scroll through, but to even find the
actual email amidst all the other security characters?

5. Are these questions also relevant to PGP or only GnuPG?

Isn't choosing VPN more effective w/o having to use the keys and
the added issue of having to convince other people to adopt this
system in order to communicate with me? These are the ones who
say, why should I do this, I've got nothing to hide?

Crossover or somesuch??

2018-06-04 Thread Maggie Meister
Hello all,

We're thinking about buying a Mac computer. We already have two
Linux (Ubuntu), two Win7, and an XP. It seems some of the
software we are using is migrating away from the Win environment.

We have successfully run TB! on the Linux machine using Crossover
and Play on Linux. Might there be a way to run TheBat! on a Mac
through Crossover, Boot Camp, Parallels, Citrix XenApp, or other
such applications??

I'm not sure I understand the flap from Apple about the security
issues of email and their system, but I am loath to abandon my
TheBat! after using it since version 1, and not interested at all
in the Apple mail system.

Converting to new system

2019-08-26 Thread Maggie Meister
Hello Bats,

Converting to a new system seems to be in the air.

I'm switching from laptops (Win 7, Linux, & MacBook) to a
desktop computer. with Win 7 Pro on C: and Linux Ubuntu on D.
There will be a data drive E to store data from the other two
drives.

I have two questions: a) Can The Bat! be configured to run on
the C and D drives with both using the same version? b) Can
they both use the same data drive E:?

IIRC I am running version 6 because it was the most stable
version going through Crossover for this Mac. My partner is
running version 7.0.56 on a Linux, so it seems I will be upgrading
to version 7.0.56 and the current Ubuntu version. Will this version
of The Bat! run on Win 7 Pro?

I do not usually run current versions of anything, so my TB! is

While I am not at all technically adept, we have lived with this

seem to have a double cut line, but his sig is showing as broken
here as well. A mystery!

Thanks Christopher, but it's usually the 'a' that needs to be superscripted from what I understand. For instance, you can see (even in the old records) Ma where the 'a' is superscripted. This is an abbreviation of the name, Maria. In the case of Profa, the abbreviation would be to indicate that the PhD graduate is a female. This is found in salutations of more formal correspondence, again as I understand it. Learning is happening.

Pointing out the degree symbol is also handy for different reasons. Thanks again.

Superscript character in a word?

2021-03-10 Thread Maggie Meister
Hello Bats,

In Portuguese (and perhaps other languages) it is sometimes
necessary to type a superscript character, such as Profa. or Ma
where the 'a' is superscripted. To illustrate, I've pasted from a wp document
into a blank email with my default editor changed from PlainText (MicroEd) to
HTML Alternative with Plain Text Part in order to be able to paste the above
examples successfully, but it's kludgy. Is there an easier way to accomplish
this?

Thanks in advance. (with apologies to MPFA if this is a cookie I've ripped

Thanks Stuart. Though I really hate unsolved mysteries, I
appreciate the answer!

Yes, that's it! Thanks Thomas. I now see that there's a
window that governs the folder arrangement, and it at least shows
me that I must have hit 'name' while rushing around and
unconsciously clicking okay to get rid of the window Never
knew it existed! I'd love to have an explanation of how all the
choices might affect my setup before randomly trying each one
though. I notice there's no help button in that window.

JSL> Does CTRL-Z (undo) do anything?

I had already re-arranged the folders and didn't have an
opportunity to try this, but will keep it in mind. An undo would
be a great addition, since there's no choice in the window to
restore the previous set-up. I filed the folders into family
members first, then ranked people who need to be answered right
away, then others who are not so frequent. It would be difficult
for TB! to offer a choice to sort this way! :-)Thanks Jack.

Actually, I didn't have problems with the first one, since I saw
the results; it was all the others! I suspect my system setup is
so simple, that the other choices would be moot in my case
anyway.

Thank you!

Sudden rearrangement of folders

2021-02-14 Thread Maggie Meister
Hello Bats,

The strangest thing just happened - all of a sudden the folders
in my message list have arranged themselves into alphabetical
order. Forever, as far back as version 1, I have used a folder
tree arranged by frequency of activity - those people I
correspond with most. What could have happened? I never
consciously set this, but arranged it manually. I have no idea
how to undo it except to manually move the folders with
ctrl+shift+arrow key back to where they 'belong'. Would any of
you kind bats know how to prevent this from happening again?

It's the first choice under Flags, in the dropdown.
