Go here: https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/main_page.php

And report it.

It's a bit of a PITA first time as you have to sign up for an account first.
Once you have signed up, just click on the 'Report Issue' link and fill in
the form. You can then copy and paste the URL to the page into a TBUDL post.

Yes, same thing happened to me. This is how I fixed it:

Create a text file named "tbfix.txt" and copy and paste the text below into
it:

---copy below here
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT\The Bat!\Editor]
"Width"=-
"Left"=-
"Top"=-
"Maximized"=-

--copy above here

Save the file (no wordwrap) and rename the file to tbfix.reg.

Make sure The Bat! is closed.

Double click tbfix.reg to merge it to the registry.

Reopen TB! and it should be back inside the screen.

Environement variables and templates

2009-10-20 Thread Simon
'Ello TBUDL,

How do I - or is it possible to - use environment variables in message
 templates?

In Windows, EMAIL is set to TB!'s message base. Normally then you'd use
%EMAIL% in scripts and what have you. Can I use this in TB!'s templates?

 E.g.

 instead of:

%INCLUDE="X:\Messages\Email\messages\templates\family\family.tricia.new.message.txt"

 this:

 %INCLUDE="%EMAIL%\templates\family\family.tricia.new.message.txt"

It doesn't work so that is what I am asking if there is a way.

Yes, I tried installing the SimpleMAPI handler and it is pretty pointless
actually. And of course the default Windows MAPI32 is extended MAPI:

For me the Send To / Mail Recipient doesn't work, no attachments, but
sending to a TB! shortcut in the Send To folder does work, and the file is
attached and templates work fine..

> ...The best option for me if TB! is already open is to drag and drop -

I have been doing that, but it is cumbersome. I was hoping to take advantage
of the 'Send this file', 'Email this document' and 'Send to' features within
most of the Windows applications I use on a daily basis as it would ave all
that wretched window juggling.

Don't have that option in MS Paint on XPnot that I ever use MS Paint.

The opposite happens for me. I send a link within FF and choose a recipient
that I have a template for and the template isn't used! The link remains as
is.

That figures. ;-)

Of course TB! is my FAX client as I use email to fax and fax to email, but
that means nothing to programs.

It's a shame TB! isn't able to exploit such a basic and useful feature of
Windows. TB! has been around for a long while now so I would have thought
that annoyance would have been resolved by now.

It's not the mailto:URL that is the problem. It's the MAPIMAIL problem!

All applications Open TB! with a new message just fine, but without any
chosen attachement(s).

I resetup Outlook Express and made it the default email client. Then emailed
files from within applications and from other XP locations and no problem
whatsover. OE shows attachments just fine. But as soon as I launch TB! and
reassociate it and make it the default email client I am unable to add
attachments to the newly created email.

In Firefox I can send a link and the TB! message created includes the link,
but that is a different process, and not attaching files.

So, does everyone else's setups work okay then?

Thanks for the reply, but already tried that approach. The Bat! loads okay,
but can't get any program or Windows XP to attach files to newly created
messages. E.g

In OpenOffice I click the 'Send Document as email button' and TB! loads but
no document is attached and the following dialog warning appears after
closing the message Window:

"OpenOffice.org was unable to find a Working email configuration"

In Windows 'My Documents' folder, selecting a file and choosing to send it
by email does the same as above but provides no dialog box informing of
failure.

It's a feature that I used to use a lot and now that I can't use it it's

Make The Bat! default email application

2009-10-03 Thread Simon
'Ello TBUDL,

In Windows XP's 'Set Program Access and Defaults' options I am unable to
set The Bat! as the system default email program simply because it does not
show up as an option in the list. The implications are that whenever I use
the option to email files from within Windows or applications such us OOo
3.1 or Office 2007 no file is attached and OOo at least warns that it can't
a default email configuration. The email client loads with a new message
window but nothing is attached. I used to be able to do this. It has become
very annoying and slows me down.

I'm not sure either, but maybe the GnuPG Home directory isn't correct in the
registry. You can set that via WinPT.

Here are some snaps showing how I have my setup. They may or may not be of
help to you.

Windows Privacy Tray (WinPT) setting preferences for GnuPG and WinPT:

http://privateofcourse.co.uk/share/GnuPG01.png
http://privateofcourse.co.uk/share/GnuPG02.png

The Bat! OpenPGP preferences setup:

http://privateofcourse.co.uk/share/GnuPG06.png
http://privateofcourse.co.uk/share/GnuPG07.png

The paths are odd because I don't keep my keys in their 'default' location.
Instead I keep them somewhere more accessible and somewhere where they are
safer and easier to back up (on a TrueCrypt drive in fact).

This isn't going to help you, but I tried to install it to take a look but
I'm afraid the GnuPG Shell installer doesn't find my GnuPG folder, even
though there's an entry for it in the registry. Tried all sorts but no joy,
so sorry, can't help you.

If you're interested, the best (only IMO of course) Windows front end for
GnuPG and the one I use is Windows Privacy Tray v 1.41.

http://wald.intevation.org/frs/?group_id=14

If you've already tried WinPT and didn't like it sorry for suggesting it
again. I found it to be the best of a very limited number. Easy to use and
you can manually set paths to gpg.exe and your keys as well.

Having been a PGP user for years and years this was the only combo I could
stick with.

And just in case it needs to be made clear, I am not an advocate of theft,
crime, stealing software, or any other such activities. Neither would I

proposed that everything in the world should be free for everyone, although
you seem to inferring that I have. For whatever reason you maybe just
misunderstanding, or maybe I am. It matters not, because I don't advocate a
'free for all' anything...or slavery :-/

My home PC has a mixture of commercial and freeware and Open Source software
on itif it isn't free or within my budget it doesn't get installed. For
example, I purchased TB! right back near the 'beginning' and continue to pay
for upgrades. I do the same for a number of other pieces of software as
well. But if all the other software I currently use was commercial software
then I would never be able to afford to use much of anythingand this
would severely limit what I use the computer for.

I purchased WinRAR when I had DOS and WFWG 3.11 and the licence I purchased
way back then has licensed me for all versions since that time. A number of
software authors use this model.Rarlab still exists, and release regular
updates. And without me paying, paying again, and paying again, and again...

Commercial software authors are just like everyone else, vying for a portion
of the pie, a slice of the limited and finite resources that people have
available to them. They are selling a product and hope to convince people
that it is worth paying our for...often over and over again. The simple fact
is that only a few will be able to make a decent living from this practice,
not the many...and those that believe that they deserve to make a living
just because they are creating something are misguided, and haven't worked
out that it is other people value their product, not them. If you get that
wrong, then you don't get paid....and you'll need to look for another way to
make money.

I have absolutely no argument there. I completely agree that 'a workman is
worthy of his hire', to steal from an old religious book. People are
criminally undervalued, vastly overworked, and grossly underpaid, that's how
capitalism works.

> This leads them to expect others to also work for next to nothing and

To some extent I would agree, but I don't believe that it inevitably leads
to nobody valuing what anybody does, rather it makes those with less money
in their pockets fight much harder to get the services and 'things' cheaper,
so that they can afford them. It's a con sequence of an uneven distribution
of wealth, where the least wealthy have grown in massive disporportion, have
less financial power to bargain with so strive to drive down prices so that
they are not excluded from partipation.

I heard someone say that if there weren't poor people then the world would
be a better place. The person saying it was a businessman running a factory
with over 300 workers who had just gone on strike because of work conditions
and low wage complaints. You're either on one side or the other in this

I don't see how that can be the same.

> example, for an email client.

I think that is a vast oversimplificationand not just necessarily so!

A distinction was made very early on between commercial, shareware,
freeware, donationware, cardware...blah-ware software. This was necessary
because not every software author sat down at their computer to spend
inordinate amounts of time tapping away at their keyboards simply because
they saw the potential financial rewards ahead.

Aside the above, you have everyone from Ahab who is 10, to Desidimona who is
80, with access to a computer, and they, and everyone else, want various
softwares to run on their computers, otherwise computers would be useless.
The term 'software' obviously covers a huge spectrum, such as Operating
Systems, web browsers, email clients, bitmap editors, graph paper printers,
automation software, media players, PDF viewers, privacy software, (continue
on ad infinitum) etc. Just count the number of programs sitting on your
computer and then calculate the cost if every single one of those was a
piece of commercial software, with regular, almost yearly pay-for updates,
and you realise just how ludicrous this model is. It's a nonsense.

"They" don't want all software to be free because "they" are evil, "they"
haven't just got deep enough pockets to pay for every bit of software and
every update.

Even within the so-called developed wealthier countries you have incredibly
unequal distribution of wealth, with most of the wealth belonging to the top
7% to 12% of the population. A lot of people within these same countries
live on or below subsistence levels, and then you look across the globe to
other countries that are even worse off and you see that the
'you-must-pay-for-everything' model of software distrubition is just
madness. It does't work, it cannot work.

A few hundred pieces of software on one PC is really not an uncommon figure
for many people, now calculate a total purchase price, and they a yearly fee
to keep every one up to date. Far too many people don't even earn those sort
of amounts each month (or even much longer) so my heart does not immediately
bleed for software authors who are looking to get rich out of volume
distribution and then getting angry at the bad people for not wanting to
playinstead of accepting that the whole model is flawed and perhaps the
whole idea needs rethinking.

> with free services and software.

Again, an oversimplifcation. At those times 'Free' didn't actually mean
'free'. 'Free' hasn't meant gratis for a very long time. The tenner-a-month
ISPs in the UK back then (the 90's) advertised their services as unlimited
free access for only £10 per month :-/ People were jumping onboard because
their telecoms companies were exploiting this new source of revenue from
Interent access and phone bills had soared out of control. People were
finding themselves with bills for hundreds of pounds a month just for
connecting to the Internet to collect email and chat.

When there is limited access to a money pot (which is all of the time IOW)
'people' will naturally and fairly be looking for cheaper, if not gratis,
solutions for most things, and quite rightly. I support them in their
efforts 100%. And it is nothing to do with valuing the efforts of
others...not in the slightest. Just because you decide to create something
doesn't automatically give you the right to have an income gain from it.
Blimey, all the great art in the world, and all the musical masterpieces
written, would never have been created if that was the way it really worked!

Not a stupid question at all, and I'm glad you asked because there may still
be a problem :-/

I first checked the plugin by running a manual AV scan (under Folder/Check
for Viruses). This was successful:

 * Checking finished. Found 0 infected messages out of 9114 checked ones.

I then checked my account logs after receiving incoming mail and the correct
entries were present. However, I didn't check the account logs after
outgoing messages had been sent.

TB!'s previous behaviour was to add incoming and outgoing AV check entries
to the account log when the AV plugin was configured and the 'Check Incoming
mail for viruses' and 'Check outgoing mail for viruses' options were
selected under Anti-Virus default settings under preferences. However, since
the plugin broke and the latest 'fix' the outgoing check log entries no
longer appear in the account logs, only in the incoming check entries:

Outgoing:

 24/07/2009, 10:00:50: SEND - sending mail message(s) - 1 message(s) in queue

 24/07/2009, 10:01:06: FETCH - 1 messages deleted on server
 24/07/2009, 10:01:06: FETCH - connection finished - 1 messages received

I can only assume this is a bug.

There is also a problem with avast!'s plugin configuration being remembered.
If you select 'Show icon in system tray and scanning', and 'Logging' under
the plugin's configuration, they become 'unselected' the next time you start
TB!

So, looks like I was wrong. Incoming mail is being checked, and manually
checking, but outgoing messages *may* not be..either that or it's just the
log entries that are missing. And the plugin's settings don't persist, so
that needs a fix.

Can anyone else confirm this?

Yes, I have the folder open when I collect my mail, and I see the wavs
appear in the folder.

> I take it the WAV file exists when you look in the folder afterwards?
> Does the script work if you plant a WAV of the correct name in the
> folder beforehand?

Yup! Run manually works a treat. Finds any unconverted wavs and processes
them. I called it from another script and it works as well. And I also ran
in via Windows Run and no problem.

I also compiled the script and programs it uses into a single exe and used
that instead, thinking that TB! might have something against running
scripts, but no go.

> Have you tried putting the three actions into three separate filters?
> (make sure first two are set to continue processing with other
> filters)

Yes, I have also tried that. And I have tried a Hotkey only filter for the
conversion part, but the wavs aren't processed...well know why they aren't
but don't know how to solve the problem.

When I run my converter, it creates a couple of temp files and folders in
the system temp folder. When run manually I can see these being created and
removed as the program executes and ends. I also tried this with TB!
executing the .exe and TB! is executing it because the temp files and
folders are appearing and disappearing. However, the exe isn't running in
the voicemail folder, and I know that for certain because the exe unpacks 4
files into the folder it is run in, runs the script then clears up
afterwards. You can see these files appear when run manually, but they do
not appear in my voicemail folder.

So, TB! is executing the exe, but it is being run somewhere else, not in the
same folder as it is executed from. And I have no idea why that is, or how
to resolve it.

I do know it isn't running in the TB! install folder or in my message base
folder because I checked.

Anyway, I'm stumped.

TB! Version 3.99.3

2007-09-17 Thread Simon
Hello TBUDL:

I have noticed that most people on this list seem to be using TB! version
3.99.2x or below, and not 3.99.3. Did I miss something? Is 3.99.3 not a
 particularly stable release?

Okay, I've had this release of TB! bottom out me a few times, annoyingly
wiping out account folders, but after a lot of poncing about I did
eventually recover them lurking within the email base.

Oh, and there's also a particularly strange issue when a notepad
replacement I use called Metapad is open at the same time as the Sorting
Office. Selecting text in Metapad and copying it whilst the Sorting Office
is open will TB! crash every time. Of course to get around this I use my
main text editor, Notetab, instead, so no big deal for me.

But apart from that, everything else seems hunky dory so far. But
should I be at all concerned about anything else?

Yeah it does... https://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/voyager/benefits.php

At first I thought that RIT must have implemented a sync within Pro version

As my message base is over 1GB I think I'll need a larger USB device first

Sure and thanks for your help. I'm just a bit mystified that it says you can

So I assume it's a restore from Backup and thereafter leave items on server

Maybe you could try the new 'Beta'

If there's a The Bat! version for windows CE, you could use the
Synchronise menu options.

If not, you might be able to use The Bat!s import and export options
if you set up folders on the PC and PDA, if the CE mail client

This is a very popular misunderstanding, made by people who have used
Windows for a long time. Think about this: You have spend 5 or 10
years beeing a Windows expert, and knows how to do everything. Then
you try Linux (with a GUI), and suddenly everything is done
differently. It would be just as hard going the other way, from Linux
to Windows.

You can see it the same way as when you get a new VCR: You have spend
5 years figuring out how to program the old one, and when you get a
new one you can't program it.

> Recent "popularization" of Linux,

I will not call the Linux GUI (called X) "recent". It have existed for
many years, and actually I saw X with a scinable GUI 5 years before
Microsoft launched Windows XP.

> offered just a *shell*,

Which is good. When you build a lot of graphics into the core of an
operating system, there is way more thing which can go wrong. The
Linux core does not force you to use a certain interface - Windows
does.

> in an attempt
> to make an impression of something "familiar"

The main problem is lack of drivers, because many hardware
manufacturers does not write drivers for Linux, and will not releese
information so other people can do it.

But in fact it works almost every time now - you can get a Linux disto
called Knoppix, which boots off a CD-ROM and right into a GUI without
touching the hard drive - you can't do that with Windows!

> Hence, Linux, simply, is NOT "easy", and will never be. (-:

It IS easy, if you spend as much time learning it as you have spend on
Windows.

The Linux core was made as a hobby project

I think you forget, that computers was made for scientists, so if you
are right, most people can't use a computer.

When I first used Linux many years ago, the GUI was as you describe: A
bit buggy, not easy to use, when you should use a floppy disk you
should "mount" it yourself etc., but that is the past, and Linux is
just as user friendly as Windows - it's just not a Windows clone, but
a different operating system where you have a free choice - just like
when you want to buy a car.

I mostly use Windows, partly due to some old hardware which only have
Windows drivers, and partly due to TheBat :-)

It can be downloaded from http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/smileys/rogues.zip

I've made a little .bat file, which is executed when a new person in
the rogues is announced. It simply downloads the file and unzips it:

cd "C:\Program files\TheBat\Images"
"C:\Program files\wget\wget.exe" -N http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/smileys/rogues.zip
"C:\Program files\PKWARE\PKZIPC\pkzipc.exe" -extract -overwrite=all "C:\Program
files\TheBat\Images\rogues.zip"

It uses wget (free from
http://www.gnu.org/software/wget/wget.html#downloading) and pkzip (not
free http://www.pkware.com/), but any command line zip tool will do.
Note that older versions of pkunzip are avalible for free, but they do
not understand long file names, and are useless in this case.

If many people starts to auto download the rogues file, it may be hard
for the server when new people are announced. In that case it would
help to make a file with e.g. the 10 newest images and the settings file.

Sorting Office Filters

2004-07-19 Thread Simon Elliott
A couple of oddities:

I subscribe to three mailing lists, of which this is one. I have
filters to send messages from each list to its own folder.

Two of these filters look for an expression in "kludges", the other
looks for a simple string in "subject". When I use the mouse to move
between the filters, the "location" field seems to stay set to the
first filter rule. eg. if I start by looking at a filter where
location is "kludges" then "kludges" is dispayed even if "subject" has
been set.

And the filters which look for an expression in "kludges" works, but
the fikter which looks for a simple string in "subject" doesn't.

Any thoughts?

Personally I really, really didn't get on with Opera's tab'ed window
scheme, and the only reason I continued my evaluation of Opera beyond
the first few minutes was that it offered the alternative option of a
separate window for each session.

Similarly with MS Word: I much prefer the newer versions of MS Word
that don't have that horrible MDI thing.

I'm not quite sure why multiple windows works better for me; I expect
many of these things are personal preferences.

If The Bat! ever does move to a more MDI type interface, I hope that
an option is retained to keep things the way they are now. Perhaps
your example of Opera is the best way forward: Opera provides both
options.

I have the same problem with one e-mail account (at pop3.tiscali.dk).
It happens when I try to download some virus infected e-mails and my
Norton Antivirus 2003 tries to clean them. It can clean some viruses
without any error, but not all.
I also have that problem with Mozilla Thunderbird.

Have you tried disabling virus checking of incomming e-mails? (but do
not disable all virus checking).

Thinking about it, I have a guess:
I use Norton Antivirus, but when I get infected mail from a specific
server (pop3.tiscali.dk) the connection breakes with a message like:

FETCH: Connection to host broken (last command sent were: "UIDL",
"RETR 1")

(the commands vary a bit)
It's an old account that pretty much only get virus and spam, so once
in a while I disable Nortons scanning of incomming mail, resulting in
that it blocks TheBat from writing the infected files to the disk.
The .tmp-files are actually empty, and can not be deleted untill
TheBat have been closed/restarted.

If TheBat just deleted all bat*.tmp files when it started, it should
solve many problems like this one.

The problem with broken connection and NAV is present with all mail
clients I've tried (e.g. Mozilla Thunderbird), so I guess it's a bug
in NAV.
Today I just canceled the problematic account, so for me there is no
problem anymore.

This turned out to be the problem. I found a tmp folder I didn't knew
off, which contained 65000 bat*.tmp files. They are now gone, and
TheBat is fast again.

To other people with this problem, the folder was located at
c:\Documents and settings\\Local settings\Temp\

(note: I use a danish Windows 2000, so "Local settings" is directly
translated from the danish version and may have a different name in
the english version.)

I have just solved my problem, which turned out to be 65000 tmp files
in a tmp folder I didn't knew existed. It was located at the path
c:\Documents and settings\\Locale settings\Temp\
and the files was named bat*.tmp

Now I've created a batfile, which I've placed at
c:\Documents and settings\\Locale settings\
which contains the line
del Temp\bat*.tmp
I've set TheBats scheduler to run it once a day, so now TheBat cleans
up after itself.

(note: I use a danish Windows 2000 so "Locale settings" is translated
from the danish version, and may have a different name in the english

First AV

2004-06-19 Thread Simon Elliott
I've been using TB! for about 6 weeks now and just had my first AV.

I was looking at the folder into which this mailing list is filtered,
the scheduled mail connection happened, and after that the folder
seemed empty and I sometimes got AVs moving to other folders.

Kill TB! via the task manager (it wouldn't exit gracefully as it
thought it had tasks active) and restart, and everything now seems OK.

a) Should I be worried by this?

b) Should I send an error report to someone?

Thanks for this.

Auto Wrap is on, but Auto Format is off.

The latter seems to be what I need. One minor irritation: Auto Format
doesn't seem to understand the "minus minus space" .sig separator, and
wraps the separator and following lines if you type on the blank line
above the .sig separator.

Yes, IMHO, if it's cheap enough. Loads of people would get them for
their kids. It wouldn't be cool'n'trendy, so no-one would steal it. It
would be functional, and it wouldn't be the end of the world if it got

But it would be nice if it had SMS.

Perhaps that's the problem: we all want a simple email program, but it
would be nice if it had XYZ. And if everyone's XYZ is different...

Yes, as long as it has XYZ :-)

I think it is a regular bug, and not just the usual errors in the
mailbox files.
The problem has existed from I ran 2.11 the first time, and I have
never had any problems with 2.x. It would be too much of a coincidence
if 4 mailboxes should be damaged at the exact same time as I upgraded.
As far as I know the installation does not alter the mailbox files, and

OK, I've found out how to suppress the message box now.

Options->Preferences->Anti Virus
Highlight AVG and click the Configure button
Uncheck the Display Warning Window checkbox.

This suppresses the message when received messages are scanned.
Neatly, you still get the message if you save or open the infected

2.11 consume all CPU resources

2004-06-04 Thread Simon Mikkelsen
Today I upgraded TheBat from v 2.10 to 2.11 by installing on top of
the old 2.10. Every time I run TheBat 2.11, the CPU usage goes to
100%, except when TheBat is using the disk a lot.

I've tried to remove the BayersIt-plugin and rename it's folder,
and move the content of my junk-folder to another folder - without any
change.

Some tasks, like reading mail, viewing folders and altering options is
running as fast as they always have done, while reciving messages and
moving messages is painfully slow.

When I try to exit TheBat, I get the warning message "Some tasks are
active now. Do you want to exit when they are finished?" with the
buttons "Yes", "No" and "Abort". Nothing happens when I press any of
them, and I have to kill TheBat from the Windows task manager.

I use Win 2000 professional danish, with the latest service packs.

A help system should be an integral part of any software package and
purchasers shouldn't be expected to pay extra to acquire it. It'd be
like buying a washing machine and paying extra for the instructions on
how to operate it. It's up to RIT to make certain that their product
can be 'operated' by supplying adequate documentation to support it.

If we learnt from RIT that the cost of producing better documentation
was going to lead to an increase in the price of The Bat! I think some
people would feel quite split over it. One of the attractions of TB!
is its price, and I think that a price hike would make it a less
attractive choice for those contemplating moving away from free
versions.

At just under £25 sterling/€35 I think TB! is priced just about right
myself.

Hello Edgar,

On Tue, 23 Dec 2003 09:51:04 +0100 your time, you said:

E> Although the help here in this group is great, It should not need
E> to exist.

Hmmm, well I think that is a romantic notion myself. So these types of
support systems [this list and others] exist because of the lack of
good help files with software? I really don't think so :-/ Just take a
look around the Net @ other support forums/lists and ponder a while on
some of the dumb-arsed questions that people ask! You could construct
the best help file system on the planet and release it with your
software and people will still defeat it by not 'reading the bleeping
manual' and not being able to understand the terminology used, etc. In
actual fact, many of the questions asked on this list could easily be
answered by reading the existing support files.

E> There should be a good help system.

Well yes, actually I would agree with this, and have made my feelings
known about this subject in the past. Personally, I think RIT Labs are
doing The Bat! a disservice by releasing their client with the current
help system; although there is easily enough information in the
current help file system to get most people up and running it still
needs revamping and made more comprehensive. So IMHO The Bat! does
_need__ a better designed and more up-to-date help system, I agree.
But I can think of many excellent programs with the same
shortcomings...not that that justifies it of course. However, I don't
believe for a moment that a better help file system would make this
list redundant. Not a chance of it! This list is invaluable, and will
continue to be so even after/IF RIT get their act together and redo
the manual.

E> Companies do not have the time to read loads of mailing list to
E> find out how the e-mail client works.

Companies do not have to read "loads" of mailing lists to find out how
The Bat! email client works. That is misleading. There is a help file
with TB! and there is this list. Not exactly stretching resources now
is it? :-/

I've shown many, many people how to use The Bat! in under 20 minutes.
Some of those have been new to computers and some have been veterans.
If someone in an company IT dept. really can't work out how to use TB!
then they probably need to get some other less demanding job...maybe
basket making or something.

E> Being a bit more "mainstream" will at least help.

No at all. Having better help files would help a little, but those
without prior experience, the lazy, and those in need of more complex
help will turn to a list like this one, as has always been the way.

And yes, I can understand people's criticisms, and of course it is
only right that criticisms should be made, but it irks me somewhat
when remarks go beyond fair criticism and become unfair
put-downs...that strikes me as being somewhat immature (not directed
at you of course).

I think if you dislike a product so intensely you should really be
seeking out something else more suited to your needs. There are plenty
of flavours of email client about, although they won't offer you the
same excellent range of features that this client can.

As I said, TB! has faults but people on this list usually attempt to
work around them until the faults have been rectified.

What a load of nonsensical claptrap! I've read some comments on this
list over the years but my word, these last few remarks really take
the biscuit. There is nothing 'unprofessional' about the way The Bat!
editor functions, and I must say it is a very discouraging choice of
wording.

There are distinctive ways of doing things in TB! but those ways work
well once you have adapted to them. There is plenty of help available
on this list to assist new users in moving to The Bat! from other
email clients, and the people offering advice obviously appreciate
that it can take a while to complete the transition, and come to terms
with the new environment. But you have to at the least appreciate that
_every_ email client has it's unique points, and TB! is no exception.
If you want really decide that you want TB! to be another email client
then switch to that.

The benefit of using an excellent client like TB! is that it ISN'T
always completely 'mainstream', and so it does require users to learn
how to use some of it's many useful features. And TB! is rich in
features, unlike other clients I won't mention. Although TB! isn't
perfect, because nothing is, it stands head and shoulders above the
competition.

I think it is perfectly fine to discuss the disadvantages of a

unnecessary, unhelpful, and even disrespectful, IMO, to be

I really don't think that's the point Peter is making.

It's been only a few months since many existing users upgraded to v2.x
at the discounted upgrade, many upgraded because there was a set time
period to upgrade in at the discounted price...so may upgraded
believing that the discount offer wouldn't get any better than it was.
But along comes Xmas and all of a sudden the discount is greater, and
it is now obvious to his boss that it would have been wiser to hang on
and get the upgrades for less. Not only that, but those that upgrade
now are getting a better discount than the early adopters, those folk

AJM> I'm using 2.01.3 set to "keep attachment files in message bodies".

If you need them desperately then you could try this:

1. Export email to .msg format
2. Open the .msg file in a text editor (without wordwrap on).
3. Look for the base64 encoded file by looking for the
MIME boundary declaration in the message. Here is an example:

- --begin example

- 10E4A19720729F06
Content-Type: image/gif; name="routeradmin.gif"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: base64
Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="routeradmin.gif"

R0lGODlhAAUABPcAAH8AAAGBAICBqIAAgAB+gMC+tcLZv6bJ8QEE3wIcdgY1qAAe
yQNE5AJSsQF4PwJ4cQV7pwOHUwCJWgGPcQKcAQsMDREVGwkZQA8yZg86gwNcTRtPwghhzAlvBwh1

<..the rest of base64 encoded image snipped..>

- --end example

4. change the filename after the "name=" part and the "filename=" part
so that they are the same name; IOW change the original filename to
newfile.ext, where 'newfile' is anything you like, and ext is whatever
the file extension should be.

- - btw: it will be these original filenames that contain the offending
characters so you are simply removing the offending characters and
adding something sensible ;-).

5. Save the file. Close it and import it back into TB!

It's a workaround at least. Hope it works :-)

I'd like to see something like X-Ray as a plugin for TB! I don't know

I actually agree quite a lot with some of the points that Roelof made
in mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] but I'd just like to add
that if you have a small LAN with 2, 3, 4, users etc. a proxy is
probably the way forward. One installation, one setup serves all. I
run a server on my home LAN. I use SpamPal for spam in front of my
mail server (Mercury/32) which serves everyone connected to the
network. It would seem a bit crazy to let everyone deal with the spam
on an individual level in this kind of environment.

But generally, what Roelof says I agree with. If X-ray was available
as a plugin for TB! for example I wouldn't hesitate in using it
instead of running it as another proxy on my server. Something like
MyGate would also make an interesting plugin for TB! as well.

JM> I don't understand this, could you explain it to me in a little more
JM> detail?
JM> Maybe a "for instance" or example or twol
JM> Thank

Above is your message quoted. In this case I selected/highlighted the
text in your message that I was replying to and then I hit the F4 key.
As you can see, TB! doesn't mess about with the quoted text at all,
which is correct, as it is "quoted". However, sometimes when text is
quoted it can prove to be a bit unwieldy, especially when the message
you are replying to hasn't been wrapped beforehand and the text is on
one line that strays across the width of the screen (say 130 or more
characters for example). I'd therefore want to quickly reformat the
lengthy quoted lines as I was replying to make them easily readable.
To do this I'd simply place the TB! caret anywhere within or next to
the quoted text with a single mouse click, and then either hit the ALT
+ L key to wrap the lines to the word wrap setting I'd previously set
in Editor Preferences, or I'd hit the ALT + J key to wrap the lines to
the word wrap setting and justify the text as well.

This is your text after I've clicked anywhere in the text message to
place the TB! caret, and then hit ALT + J:

JM> I don't understand this, could you explain it to me in a little
JM> more detail? Maybe a "for instance" or example or twol Thank

Another example of when the wrap shortcut keys are useful is when you
are typing a message with TB!'s autowrap feature on, and go back and
edit parts of the text. For example, if I typed this:

The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox
jumped over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumped over the lazy
dog.

and then went back and corrected it like this:

The quick brown fox jumped over the *lackadaisical feline*. The quick brown fox
jumped over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox *leap frogged* over the lazy
dog.

The text would need reformatting. So a simple ALT + J/L would reformat
it.

And after this explanation I've just realised that what you were
asking me to explain was an error. Doh! Ah well, I'll send this
anyway. Someone else might find it useful...well you never know.
