[Trisquel-users] Help me restart Trisquel
I don't know what happened. Ofently, Trisquel is aksing me my password to open a session. No way this time. I have the usual visual in the back, i have at the top of the screen the clock with the rigth hour, at the top rigth i can choose to restart or hut down my computer and a window (it is not working) and at the center of the screen a window with the trisquel logo and my username. When i click on my username this change to Trisquel 6.0. When i want to force to shut down with the on/off button of my computer it tells : You are now connected as Gnome display manager, this computer will shut down in 60 seconds. There is NO WAY to have a normal session !!! Please help !

Nice to read simple pages. You can do a IP location test by enter a IP location test URL. I wanted to recommand this good URL. This can be useful everywhere you go. I'm wondering if I really need a VPN when using Transmission to do P2P or torrent to hide my IP.

A lot Trisquel users seem to have problems with their graphic card since their Trisquel 7 update. I can't understand, because my Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI RV370 [Mobility Radeon X300] graphic card is compatible with Gnu/Linux. https://h-node.org/videocards/view/fr/647/Advanced-Micro-Devices--AMD--nee-ATI-RV370--Mobility-Radeon-X300- I have an anamorphic image. I was really happy to have kept a DVDrom of Trisquel 6. It seems it is no longer downloadable as it was before. You have the same menu as in trisquel 7 https://trisquel.info/fr/screenshots So i suppose I start my laptop with the dvd, then choose in the menu install Trisquel then i will find someting else ??? I didn't wanted to go too far... I wonder if I will have the same interface as in Ubuntu for this reinstallation.

I once made a video I wanted to post on You Tube about the installation of Trisquel and I shot my screen while doing installation. I kept it but I don't know if i will upload it one day. Too much blur !!! So I saw it again to imagine what would happen. Once I click on install in the menu of the DVD, I will have a installation interface. The first message is asking if this computer is connected on the net, and the hard drive have enough memory. 6 needs 6,5 Go. The second window will recognize if there is already a system on my computer. So I think I will have quite the same interface as Heather have linked. This is quite late here in France and I prefer do it quitely this sunday and let other people suggest their ideas. I hope this subject will be usefull for those who want to keep Trisquel and had the same problems as me with 7. Thank you all.

The are many problems you may find with cinerella : If no sound, cineralla uses by default OSS. You'll have to chose like in Audacyty ALSA. You also mays havee problems with typographical accents (for example if you make a french video for France or Quebec). There are some solutions. Don't make active Compiz if you see some strange behaviour with it. Do you work with other people using cinerella ?

After an installing with the solution I gave you I saw that Trisquel 7 (working on a 64 bits computer) needs the libquicktimecine-cv. I've been to the following adress : https://launchpad.net/~cinelerra-ppa/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+sourcepub/2783087/+listing-archive-extra to find it. But it does't seems to work. I've already tried to install cinerella but I finally gave up because of problem of dependancies.

Thanks for the links Adonay. It seems that Natron is more for post production and special FX than editing. I had a look at OpenShot but can really tell if it's more stable than Pitivi already installed in Trisquel. It seems really basic. It seems to be good software for people who have to make a video editing quickly without having the time to understand how it works. But comparing to Pitivi, I like when Pitivi is asking first what is your project (sreen size, frames per minutes) Both on Trisquel 6 7, I always have an unstable Pitivi. I always have to save my project or restart it because I can't do anything or Pitivi have bugs in showing my edition. But I always had correct out renderings. Blender doesn't support to work with ogg formats. You have to transfer into mp4 before. But it does a great job in editing ! Kdenlive seems to be a good compromise between OpenShot/Pitivi and Blender for usual editing (you tube, mediagoblin) but limits the video and audio tracks. Seems really easy to use.

HI I have discovered pglgui (A/K/A PreeGuardian) that can be helpful for I2P. I had to configure my router to open 8887 port in TCP and UDP and 123 in UDP. I understood that hackers can take benefit of an opened port in my firewall to do bad stuffs on my computer and pglgui could help me to protect my computer. I have followed the advices of mYself here : https://trisquel.info/fr/forum/need-help-program-installation#comment-37829 to configure the whitelist. My internet connection is working still well with my regular IP, Tor Browser and my email accounts. Thanks. I haven't tested pglgui yet with I2P and services that can work with it like aMule. In the next days I aslo like to try to install and use Freenet and GNUnet. Have you got any advices for configuring my whitelist to use all these services ? I'm feeling a bit lost. Greetings ! ;-)

Thanks JadedCtrl. I like this picture for its natural noise. It's a view of nature and it isn't disturbing to find a file or folder on the desktop. Too much details and colors let you work difficult on it. I keep it as a base of the environment. To answer Vita_cell, my first feelings of Gnome were like I was a bit lost to find something precise as I haven't tried it yet and I had to come back to a normal Trisquel. But on Windows 8, I wasn't even able to find the switch off button ! Gnome can be quite nice if you use a touchscreen. There are great videos introducing XFCE. It seems nice. Be sure I'll have a try soon Vita_cell ! I did professionally some graphics using Apple. It is when I saw what Apple did, after the iMac with the first release of iPhone that I got disgusted of their business plan to sell priceless highly designed gear to nuts for them to shine in society. I have kept an eye on theses interface creations since I use GNU/linux. There are great stuffs to do for every kind of people. I'd like to do someting in it.

To all : Thank you for your encouragements. Artworks around Trisquel are very few on Gnome-Look.org. It is also a way to promote Trisquel on a website visited by people who use free software and Linux distributions (even if they are non free software like Ubuntu). I was also very surprised to see next to Trisquel wallpapers the choice of a Debian stuff (see Background in the system preferences) We shouldn't have such things like this ! @ fullwicho This memo is a great idea ! [Trisquel-users] My Trisquel main menu have dissapeared
I'm a GNOME Flashback user (I mean the default GNOME environment of Trisquel 7) My main menu have totally dissapeared. I only have the Trisquel applet by now. I wanted to edit with Alacarte my application menu. But Trisquel 7 doesn't allow me as Trisque 6 did, to clic and drag some of the applications to put in personal folders inside the application menu. I have tried to do it with Menu Libre, but it was difficult for me because I had to know the commands to create my menu and a help of Alacarte was needed to know them. I remember it was a manipulation with Totem that mess it up. I think there is a conflict with files made with Alacarte and Menu Libre. Is there any way to recover the default settings ? I can't do it with Alacarte even if a button can allow me to do it. Nothing happens. Thank you

I think you should use this OnionMail account with IceDove and TorBirdy addon. You'll have to start Tor service before with the RootTerminal by using this command (check if Tor is installed in synaptic) # sudo service tor start to stop it : # sudo service tor stop You can check if this works by sending you an email with your usual email account to your OnionMail account. TorBirdy can be slow by the experiment I had with it.
[Trisquel-users] FX Settings difficult in Audacity
Even if Audacity can be a great sound editing tool, I'm very distrurbed by the way Audacity do things. I'm trying to set the equalizer effect to a sound, but Audacity does't allow me to listening my setting while I'm doing it (I always have to set up first then listen a sample of what I've done). Is there any way to modify this or is there any tool that allow to modify FX (especilally equalizer FX) in a sound file while in the FX setting ? I'm a bit confused with plug in tools that seems to only work for midi softwares and maybe not Audacity. Thanks in advance for your replys.

I haven't got any doubt that his works But I'm wondering what happens if you burn this .img, put it in the trash and if this disc can work with a device file in /dev/mapper and a mount point file in ~/ as those files depends of the .img I don't think this can work on another computer. I'm going to install Tomb (i haven't done it yet) to see how a CD-R behaves with a .tomb file. I hope it will woks fine. I still haven't got any real solution yet.

Of course HKR, There is still the possibility of using GPG very easily to encrypt files and do a back up on a cd or dvd. But when you have a whole folder filled with plenty of other folders or files, all you want to do is simply enter once a password and easily find the file you're looking for, or even open it from the software, just as you can do on a USB key or external HD encrypted with Luks. GPG is ok for single files. But a folder needs to be zip compressed then encrypted with GPG. That means you'll have to copy the zip file somewhere on you hard drive or wherever and decompress it . You can't use it for a whole DVD-R or even a CD-R because it's just too long. @MangyDog Yes, I already knew Tomb. But I'm surprised that Tomb is not in our repository. It sould be. After reading the man pdf of Tomb wibsite, the « engrave » command makes an image, but an image of the key that can be printed on paper and phisically stored as backup I'm not sure Tomb could really read a optical disc written from an .iso file where a .tomb This could be tested I have tried to open the gencryptdvd script as described by Magic, but it doesn't want to open. I've placed the .sh in /home and used the Root Terminal to check if nothing was wrong : The ls command dispayed gencryptodvd-0.2.sh in green when I allowed the file in the propetities to be used as a program. I haven't any « awk » warning, I only have a « command not found » adding a ./ before gencryptodvd makes an unexisting file warning. I precise sudo package is already installed on my laptop. Veracrypt exist for 3 years now, but no one proved (excepted the NSA that will keep it secret) that every TrueCrypt fork is hackable. A doubt can be allowed... You are right onpon4. I simply notice by this question (how can i do an encrypted CD-R or DVD-R on Trisquel) that there is something missing we should answer. Veracrypt is the first answer, and I'm hoping there will a second, then a third... Certainely because we don't use CD-R, DVD or BR as a storage like we did before USB keys, bigger external HD and then the cloud to store our data, we have forgot this question.

VeraCrypt's got the Apache License 2.0 but with portions subject to TrueCrypt License version 3.0 which are non-free This license is nonfree for several reasons. It says that if you don't understand the license you may not use the program. It puts conditions on allowing others to run your copy. It puts conditions on separate programs that “depend on” Truecrypt. The trademark condition applies to “associated materials”. There are other points in the license which seem perhaps unacceptable, and in our uncertainty about them we delayed in posting our evaluation. I succeed to create the file and mount it. The tutorial have errors. It creates a files named my-container.img at the beginning and call it mycontainer which gives an error in the terminal. But I still have a problem to drag and drop the files or even copy and paste my file in the container once it's mounted. The real proprietary of "my-mouth-point" if you follow all the steps is not your computer, it is "root". I came into /dev/mapper so see if there was any secret-device file, and there wasn't.

[Trisquel-users] Some wonderings on Wine and Playonlinux
Hi, I needed the software ISSE http://isse.sourceforge.net/ but even by following the exact methodology of the installation, I always have a error to compile the package, even with the advices of a ubuntu trusty user in the tickets. I have posted a ticket some days ago on Sourceforge.org, but the developer seems to have gave up this project. As this software is GPLV3, as it also exist in .exe and I could have the help of PlayOnLinux and Wine, I said ti myself why not using the .exe ? Well, this software works with wine and playonlinux ! But I'm worried about how things happened. Wine wanted to install Mono http://wiki.winehq.org/Mono and Gecko http://wiki.winehq.org/Gecko that seems to be proprietary (even in some parts). But I have cancelled this installation. I also find nes to ISSE folder in my PlayOnLinux's Virtual Drive, forlders with Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Windows NT. This files are not empty and contains an .exe file. What's this ??? Should I be worried about it ? Playonlinux is recommended by some users of the forum. Thanks a lot.

Anyway ISSE is not really working on PlayOnLinux because there is always a bug when you try to load a file and this is not a question a format. I have to use .wav ones. I will probably have to try other types of windows emulations with playonlinux. I had to downgrade Audacity because the ppa version was sometimes crashing and I had to do an xkill command, then, impossible to restart audacity again. I liked this project because it was based on the idea to separate sounds under a spectogram view. ManyEars is not this kind of thing. Audacity is not exactly working on this. They have added new functionalities when your're on the spectrogram view but not this one.

Ubuntu have nothing really much to offer... This is my opinion. I use Inkscape, Gimp, Scribus, Blender very usually, have the latest version via a official ppa and stay on Trisquel ! I only have Trisquel's Audacity adviced version, because even for minor operation, the latest version of Audacity really bugs. This version works really fine for me ! The 1st thing you can't really do on GNU/Linux is Flash websites with animations. You can do "Libre" ones, but not as .swf format. I began to create with very few power computer 20 years ago. And they were Apple one ! I had to think a lot before doing an effect. I was using 100 M Syquest to save my work ! Now, computers are very powerful. If I would compare Gimp to Photoshop, I would say Gimp contains every main features you really need to do some photo edition. There are differences in FXs. But Gimp ones are OK. There are some differences in the interface and I have get Photoshop shortcuts in Gimp to help as I was sometimes a bit lost in the beginning. Making creations on GNU/Linux is more positive for me because I've never stand on my computer to do good creations, but only on my imagination. After cevral years as a professional in graphics, I've told some students the importance of using GNU/Linux in art schools and talk about it to their teachers because a lot of companies are using Apple and Adobe, and it forces them not to be free to pay less, have a better security, and be free to have their own version. A lot of employers don't think about the advantages to let those 4 freedoms to their employees.

Hi I'm trying to use Jaaa or Japa (two FFT sound analysers in real time which are in our dependancies) with a playback coming from different sources like VLC or Audacity. I'm using QJackCtl, the graphical interface for jack-audio-connection. I used Jack before on an Apple and in the input (the left column in my capture), I had in "System" 4 outputs : the 2 playbacks and the 2 lines in. As you see in my capture, this is impossible to me to connect the playback of VLC or Audacity to Jaaa or Japa via Jack audio to make it work. Is there anything wrong with my sound parameters in "system preferences" as I only have the line in or microphone for choice. In other words, how can I make work Jaaa or Japa via Jack audio with a VLC or audacity playback ? Thanks a lot.

Hi Sasaki, I had to give it up when it was some DVD coming from Universal because they were protected. I had to rip all my own DVDs from this ugly company on an Apple computer. I just had one DVD who didn't seemed to be protected. I used to make an image of it before encoding it as I explained above, but there was also an error in the pictures when I played the iso of the DVD. No, I didn't mean it is. I had to rip with Simple Burn a DVD containing cevral movies from 25 to 10 minutes. I see what you mean with the "play all" you can find in music videos dvd. But it wasn't this kind of DVD. To my surprise, Simple Burn didn't recognize the shortest ones. This doesn't mean it will not work for you. Perhaps you'd like to rip a shortest movie like the movie trailer that is on your dvd. It will perhaps not work with SimpleBurn. Copy a DVD as an iso is to my opinion a better way to make a MKV with Handbreak. Then, you can put the iso in the trash. I still don't know how the DVD player can behave during the encode with handbreake. This is why I'm doing this.

There can be an alternative way to make a Mkv of your favourite DVD. 1. Make an image of your whole DVD on your hard drive with this command : dd if=/dev/sr0 of=nameoftheDVD.iso sr0 is my DVD player, it can be something else for you. 2. Mount your iso image. You can also play it to see if there's something wrong at the 30st minute. 3. Encode your DVD with Handbrake I also tried SimpleBurn but it didn't work for shortest movies in the DVD.

Hi everyone, It seems we miss some dependancies for playing dvd videos in flidas. We have the libdvdread4 to run the command sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread4/install-css.sh But it seem I haven't the install-css.sh file in the folder to make it install. So the terminal can't find my command. We also miss the libdvdcss2 to read them in VLC. We had it in Trisquel 7. gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly is also unavaliable. The terminal tells it exists or be out of use, or only avaliable from another source. I'm on a 64 bit machine. The terminal also says gstreamer0.10-plugins-good:i386 gstreamer0.10-plugins-base:i386 gstreamer0.10-plugins-good gstreamer0.10-plugins-base come in remplacement. These are installed. But I cannot play any dvd for now. Does anyone have the same things ? Thank you

Well, I don't think mass surveillance is a joke. This article is actually quite serious and face recognison is used everywhere, even in the steets. Not only on Facebook. I'm an funny person. Making a surprise to the family and friends who are using a lot Facebook for trying this method can allow him to create a real event in a party for fun. He can create his own mask. Try some others. Well, as an old Apple user and a quite active person on the french forum, there is not such a gap between Ruben an I than I had with Steve Jobs. I read that few years ago, 3% off the total of gross national product of France came from non lucrative association (which have a official national status). By talking about Trisquel around me as a user (and I recently talked about it last week-end to a Linux Mint user), I promote it. I do some assistance here like Apple would do. Giving a living distro makes it attractive. Unfortunately, I think libre computer sellers sould lower their prices to help projects like Trisquel or even other free softwares. I do graphics so I need a good screen and enough power. One of the solution could be buying an old MacBook to install Libreboot. I didn't started as a hardware hacker spirit which is very important, I think. As a french penson I always though by the term Libre rather than Free. Trisquel is not free beer for me. So I looked the prices of Windows and Apple licences. But they have their proper softwares like iTunes and so on. So you just can't really compare because other softwares are not our project. So, talking about the price of Trisquel is nonsens for me. I'll give 30 € as a support contribution for Trisquel 8 because I just like it.

The problem I had in switching from Apple to GNU/Linux was the "bunch" of .M4A I have made in iTunes. If the losless of the m4a format is ok and is playable in VLC, converting them is another story, because it is not a free format and iTunes didn't played Flac files (I don't know if it's always the case). I use avconv (the libre equivalent of FFMpeg) and I do : $ avconv -i input.m4a output.flac Convert all tour files can be quite long. Maybe a solution sould exist for converting cevral files in the same command but I don't know how. FFMpeg tutorials could tell you to do it. I don't kow if it's working with WinFF. Maybe you sould try avconv for your .wmv if everything else has failed. Remember m4a is a lossless format, not a lossy format ! So convert them in aiff, wav or flac ! As I said, I don't know why keeping m4a files if it's only really compatible with iTunes. iTunes suks ! Does anyone have the same problem ?

Debian doesn't allow Iceweasel installation anymore, but only Firefox (I don't know if Firefox is still considered as free software). Debian tell they only have free software in their repositories, but you can install Chromium (so, WTF ???). So I've tested Chromium with a bit of fear and don't want to use it anymore ! It is still recording your history unless you block the read/write permissions of the history file. Yes it is. I knew this was not developped anymore. OK, I could have done a tar.gz installation rather than a ppa install. I know the general opinion about ppa here and to avoid it. Don't use PPA's because you don't know what can become to the licence. This would be... stupid not to use it when avaliable. But peerguardian also stands on ip blocklists that have to be upgraded as well. So what do you mean by that ? Is the use of an non developped is a risk of security even with upgraded lists ?

I've done this mkdir command because the english Ubuntu told it, but I wanted to see what was going on in /media/user . Before my unfortunate reboot, I saw that when I was booting my extra hard drive after this mkdir command, I had both My_hard_drive as a folder and My_hard_drive1 as a folder icon with a little hard drive icon in it. But I've deleted it. Of course I would prefer the directory to be directly in /. As I said, I don't know how to modify my system because I have not even a grub when I switch on the computer (I only have the boot menu). And I can't change anything with a live USB, because it's root protected. How to do it ???

Isn't it supposed to mount all filesystems listed in the filesystem table file /etc/fstab ? So yes, I didn't have any mount of the extra hard drive at all when it was unmounted. But I suppose it was only when I reboot Trisquel when my extra line in fstab is considered. It is a real mess to find a good process to install a new hard drive (I read about 4 or 5 ways, some didn't considered UUID). I thought it was in the procedure.

I have done something else... Anyway this was a 3 day installation, I've saved before all the home directory and all selections in Synaptic. So, no real problems for recovering it all. Frist, I tried to modify the /etc/fstab with a live usb bu doing sudo mount /dev/system_partition /mnt then sudo pluma /mnt/etc/fstab which worked pretty well. But still no grub at all. Back in the USB live, i've lauched Gparted and saw exclamation marks in the lines of the system, swap, home partitions. In fact, not having any Grub at all when switch on the computer was a problem with... Bios ! The operation of modifying the fstab had changed the start of the SSD and HD drives in bios ! But I thought this was not the best way to use a computer an SSD and a HD drive on a computer. So I decided to reinstall it all, which allows me to have extra space on the SSD to install other OS (this is what it's made for) and I've formated the HD in Ext4 (more stable than XFS upon your advices in a previous talk) and choose a /home mount point. The whole HD drive is now dedicated to Trisquel. I know I will have to keep a little space for a /home partition in case I'll install other os' because it can cause problems with preferences' softwares I'll launch with them. I still can modify fstab partition in those future OS for having all privileges on them. Do you have any advices to give me (making a sudo mkdir /media/user/hard_drive ???) ? Thanks anyway

SSD drives are worst when you write and read all the time like I do. It is great for laptops as you move with them even switched on. I sometimes use Ubuntu for upgraded softwares with extra features and hardware that haven't already got free drivers. I had to use Jitsi which only works with Chromium. I need Ubuntu in some occasions. But I this allows me to test other OS. This is why I have a lot free space. On your second paragraph about other os, this is was I was talking about previously, but you told it better than me.

Hi everyone, I wanted to intall an extra hard drive for the system. So after fully formated my hard drive in ext4, I've changed the /etc/fstab for this HD to automatically be mounted when I boot. I carefully took the UUID of my HD by doing a sudo blkid before. I also saved a fstab.bak before changing it. I've typed : UUID=[the_digits_of_my_hard_drive_UUID] /media/user/My_hard_drive ext4 defaults 0 2 I've done a sudo mount -a with extra hard drive mounted and had no special messages. With unmounted media, sudo mount -a said the mounting point was not existing, I thought this was normal. This was not a UUID error. I tried a reboot, but I can't even have any Grub at all (I have double linux os boot on which I haven't already done the same operation). I tried to change the fstab with a live USB, but I don't have any privileges to change the fstab. What did go wrong ? Thank you
