What would you consider the top ten most annoying vlogging errors/mistakes. I'll start - and I know that my opinion is going to be controversial 1. It irks me when people use copy protected material that they don't have the legal right to use. For example many vlogs use sound from famous musicians who have not authorzied putting their stuff on the public domain. Or lots of vlogs will use video clips from big hollywood films to which they do not have the legal right. I only use stuff that's authorized under common lisc. AND/OR stuff that I have purchased via stock outlets. I own a virtual agency and I have to negotiate with every artist regarding usage rights. These folks work hard to produce their work and I don't feel that it is right to take it without authorization. 2. Shaky video - ala 'the blair witch project' 3. Video with absolutely no text so that the only way I know what it is about is by clicking on it. OK, so what are some other folks pet peeves. Yahoo! Oh, to be fair I have to admit that in my first vlog, Branding Power the script is based LARGELY on a parable by BuildingBrands.com. I do give him full credit, and I did change it a little. So, perhaps I'm violating my own rule, cause I didn't contact him first? I think one of the other reasons I don't like when folks use hollywood footage and famous bands is because it takes the 'grassroots' out of vlogging, and it kind of seems like 'cheating' to me. I would like to see artists compensated, but I would hate to see a situation so stifling (which, if we all played strictly by the rules, we have now) that many brilliant mashups (both audio and video) would never be made. These folks work hard to produce their work and I don't feel that it is right to take it without authorization.I am interested in this point - how difficult is it to negotiate such rights? Are there standard forms? What kinds of fees are typical, if there is such a thing as typical in this field? Is there a clearinghouse where I could go and say I want to use Song X for my videoblog, which has an average monthly circulation of n, which is distributed by so-and-so means... How much will that cost me? - and get a quick answer? I would expect such a service to include considerations such as the difference between using a song in its entirety with no other sound (so that there could be abuses such as people stripping out the soundtrack to put on their iPod without further payment), vs using only some proportion of a song, or using it as background music with other sound so that a clean recording could not be easily stripped out of the video. 2. Shaky video - ala 'the blair witch project'This depends on so many factors. We all try to avoid it, but I don't carry a steadycam harness or even a tripod in my purse all the time. My pet peeves? Don't think I have any. Anything that doesn't catch and keep my attention (very little - I just don't have time!), I don't watch. [videoblogging] Re: one video format for windows and mac?
The problem is that there isn't just one good universal format. Flash comes the closest to being a universal format for Web viewing, but it doesn't work on most portable devices. If you want to be sure that your stuff can be seen on the iPod then choose one of the 3 formats work with it: MOV, MP4 or M4V (actually there are only two formats MP4 and MOV since M4V is just a MP4). Also MP4's isn't as universal as you might think. It's not the 'MP3 of video.' Windows Media doesn't natively support it. And the MP4 that is encoded to play on an iPod won't play on a PSP and vice versa. But then again I've heard reports from some people who post in quicktime and WMV that the WMV is downloaded much more. But I believe that Andrew from Rocketboom has said that the majority of their downloads are Quicktime. Perhaps he'll correct me if I'm wrong. Fortunately, thanks to the popularity of the iPod and it's supporting software iTunes, quicktime isn't all that rare on PC's anymore. It's pretty standard in fact--for people inclined to consume online media. I currently post iPod compatible MOVs and Flash, but that may change soon. [videoblogging] Re: do you have a video iPod?
OK the problem seems to be the same one that Verdi reported earlier in the year. Manually creating baseline h264 in quicktime no longer seems to work on ipod. Havent found a quicktime workaround or more detailed explanation of the problem yet. Solution is to either use ipod export (but I dont know how you will reduce the bitrate further afterwards and still have a working file). Or use a different encoder. Are you on Mac or PC? For Mac try iSquint: http://www.isquint.org/ For PC Im a little out of date of whats available, there should be some free encoders, or something like the latest Nero Recode should work. Note that the iSquint site details some problems with files on 60GB Ipods with firmware 1.1. This appears to be another bug, seperate to the problems youve been having. I dont have a 60GB ipod so I cant explore that stuff. Apple will have to do real with the next ipod if they ever want me to buy their stuff again, having been a Mac ipod user for 10 months, I feel let down in all sorts of ways. As far as I can tell they are well within the iPod spec: File format, MP4 Video format, H.264 Data rate, 225 kilobits/second (roughly 28 kilobytes/sec) Optimized for download Image size 320 x 240 QVGA Frame Rate 24 Key Frame, automatic Frame Reordering, box ticked Then click Video Options, and ... Restrict profile(s) to baseline. Encoding mode best quality (multi-pass) Then click OK Now in the second-top drop-down box select Audi Format, AAC Channels, mono Data Rate 16kbps Output sample rate 22.050kHz Encoding quality better Waz www.crashtestkitchen.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Steve Watkins steve@ wrote: Earlier this year Apple did something to either ipod firmware, itunes or quicktime that means some methods for endocing video to ipod dont seem to load onto the ipod anymore. This is annoying not least because there is nothing to say that Apple wont do something similar again in future. Funnily enough this issue, whatever caused it, doesnt seem to have stopped video encoded using other methods (such as isquint) working on the ipod. I dunno, maybe it was a bug. Still at least there is ipod conversion built into itunes now, so whilst far less than ideal, if any videos do stop working at least viewers can convert them more easily ( faster) now. Hi Steve, OK the problem seems to be the same one that Verdi reported earlier in the year. Manually creating baseline h264 in quicktime no longer seems to work on ipod. Havent found a quicktime workaround or more detailed explanation of the problem yet. That sounds grim. I read here: http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1401036highlight=#1401036 that encoding with the PSP preset in ffmpegX will produce files that will play on both PSP and iPod. The comment was posted on Nov 04, 2005. If that's true (I can't test it right now) then it would seem to be a good encoding strategy. Can anyone confirm whether this works or not? I've seen the group beat this poor ex-horse so many timesThis is one of those topics that is so political that it can never be solved so all I'll say is: Every creative thing that has been done by anyone... has been done by someone else before to greater or lesser extent. Our World Religions, our Cultural Customs, the sociological makeup of World Society, our Music, our written works, our art. All of it is built upon the utilization of previous generations efforts. We all tap into the same creative universal brain soup. Should a creator receive credit for what he does? Absolutely. Should he reap the rewards of his creation? Of course. Should we use other people's work without crediting it? Hell no, nor should we reap a financial reward from it. Should we have to pay some ungodly fee for the use of said material in a vlog that may have a circulation of 100 or less people? I think not. Should we have to pay some kind of fee at all? H a better question is... if we Had no choice but to pay for it... would we use it? Then comes our moment of truth as to whether it is necessary... or... easy. Are we ever going to agree on this? Goodness no... if we did we'd have nothing to keep our blood warm during the cold winter months. Debate is good for the soul. [videoblogging] Re: do you have a video iPod?
Its a good strategy but Im not sure whether this option gives you mpeg4 files or h264 files? In the past it was possible to get a mpeg4 file that works on both the ipod and PSP, but h264 more problematic (because PSP uses h264 main profile and ipod uses baseline h264 profile). ffmpegX recently added PSP h264 support which I havent tried yet, maybe it works on an ipod too but Id guess not. [videoblogging] Re: one video format for windows and mac?
Yes mpeg4 rather than h264 offers greater compatibility with older machines versions of quicktime etc. Your mpeg4 files wont necessarily be any larger than h264 ones, its just that at any given bitrate you can get better quality fromh264 than mpeg4. But many people use around the same bitrate for both h264 and mpeg4 (around 600kbits/sec, though some people use much lower). When going for a higher resolution, you will need to increase the bitrate or the compression artifacts will be more noticable. Its jut a case of playing around and getting the right balance (as thered be no point having a higher resolution if the final result is worse because of many more compression artifacts due to useing too low a bitrate). With h264 you are stuck with 320x240 type sizes on the ipod. Wheras for mpeg4 the maximum is actually defined by total number of pixels, a maximum of about 230400 pixels are allowed. So 640x480 wont work because that would be 307200 pixels. But a resolution like 544 x 408 that Taylor mentioned in an earlier post, will work and is the right 4:3 aspect ratio. No its not a joke. I dont know why it didnt work for you, nor why you are so quick to assume that things that dont work for you must be a cruel joke. Maybe you found a bug or it somehow didnt like your source footage for some reason. Anyway I will continue to reccomend isquint because its free and updated quite regularily. Even if you dont use it, the website can be useful for learning about any new ipod bugs etc. Most of these things like handbrake, ffmpegx, isquint are all using the same encoders, just different User interface sending slightly different encoding options to the encoder. File formats that dont work on one may work on another, encoding speeds may vary, etc, I generally recommend people who arent 100% sorted using quicktime, investigate these options every 3-6 months to see if they could be saving thmselves lots of encoding time or what else is new. These apps also help put pressure on Apple to speed up their own h264 encoding, as happened in recent versions of quicktime/itunes. If you enjoy trying different options then I suggest maybe having a go with the newest test version of isquint, as they have fixed some audio sync issues and other sutff, who knows it may fix your problem. Or just stick with the handbrake option you are used to. Just forgive me for the fact that if you give the handbrake options as best advise to people on this list, I feel the need to offer alternative advise as well, due to the handbrake option not being the quickest. If it works for you then cool, and it certainly will get round any input file format compatibility issues, its just that because it adds intermediate steps that take time, its not the best advise for everyone. I see it as a last resort if ffmpegx, isquint or quicktime dont do what people need. Find open source videos here http://www.archive.org/details/opensource_movies 4. Or you can just do a google search like this +video +gnu OR +video +creative commons +free video 5. If you find something you like and it's not CLEARLY in the creative commons, then simply call or email the owner and ask permissions. Is that comparing 3ivx to mpeg4 from isquint or h264 from isquint? Its not bad at both, but Id agree that 3ivx is a very nice mpeg4 encoder, its hard to beat it for mpeg 4 quality when the right settings are used. Were you using the isquint startup defaults or did you stick the quality option up? Were the better results in 3ivx quality or filesize or both? How about encoding time? Feel free not to answer if Im taking this too far lol. I have a bad feeling in my stomach about 3ivx though. Its still not been updated. A complete guess from me is that somethings happened to the developers who actually made the clever bit of 3ivx, theyve not released a Mac Intel version let alone a quicktime 7 one. Anyway if this speculation is true, and 3ivx dont fix whatever is stopping their development of the codec, then eventually it wont be an option anymore. People should use it now if it gives you good results, but I worry for the future, next time people upgrade their computers or OS etc. Steve of Elbows --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Bill Streeter [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Yeah, it's a bug. After viewing the Interview with Markus Sandy on Blip by 93mm, you (collectively) are renowned for helping people to be able to vlog, which is a good thing, but in the long term: 1. What are your objectives? To encourage people to tell their own stories; to capture images and ideas from places around the world that don't get covered by mainstream media; to increase media literacy at the community level so traditional disenfranchised populations can have a stronger voice in civic discourse. 2. Why do you want to take on the media? I don't necessarily want to take on the media; I just don't believe they have a monopoly on ideas, news, culture, etc. They shouldn't be the only game in town. Beyond vlogging, I'm very concerned about media concentration, particularly since the FCC started reversing cross-ownership rules a few years ago; the less diversity their is in media, the shallower our democracy. 3. How much do you charge people to go on these courses? Most times I've done vlogging training I haven't charged anything, but that's because I often teach in low-income or disenfranchised communities. Other times, it's usually been an honoraria rather than a consulting fee. But as Node101 expands here in Boston, I plan to participate as a volunteer. 4. Do you all still have jobs in the film/TV industry? My work in the media industry has always been somewhat ancillary. From 94-99 I developed grant programs for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; I then became a digital divide activist at the Benton Foundation, working occasionally on FCC media ownership issues. Documentary making was more of a hobby than anything else; my wife and I made a few documentaries when I was in college in grad school. Later, we made a doc on Thai boxing and managed to get actor Jason Statham to narrate it; we then sold it to the Nat Geographic Channel. My wife is in the industry - she works full-time on story development for Nat Geo; most of my current video blogging work is a hobby, though I occasional consult and do speaking engagements in connection to my work in the digital divide. 5. How exclusive is Node 101, could I join and do the same over here? Seems like the operating principle is The More, The Merrier. 6. How do you guys actually see the newbies such as myself, without any media training, videoblogging? Depends on what you mean by see. See as in expect or imagine: I never received any training; I'm self-taught. The great thing about video blogging is that anyone with a camera and basic Internet skills can do it; that's why I'm such a fan of the medium. See as in actually watching newbies: I use iTunes and fireant; see who's posting what on the list; exploring sites like mefeedia, etc. 7. Do you have ordinary jobs or do you actually work for or at Node 101? Here in Boston at least, Steve Garfield has done an amazing job at motivating vloggers to get together on Sunday mornings. Personally, I've been a rather poor participant due to travel schedule and a sudden rush of baby-supply shopping. The meeting I attended had more than 30 people there sharing thoughts and ideas on video blogging - all of them there as volunteers. andy carvin www.andycarvin.com Yahoo! [videoblogging] Re: Top Ten Vlogging Mistakes
I still don't see that if you use a soundtrack hat someone else has performed, because you are not making money from it, or shouldn't be, then a piece of music is like an advert for the copyright owner. Paul, I understand your thinking, and it seems logical on the surface. However companies/bands/whatever place a ton of effort into their talent, their creative products, their brands and their marketing. They do not want to be placed in things that may not be compatible with their brand plan. Or, in the case of very large/successful entities, they do not want to be placed in anything that is not part of their brand/marketing strategy. For example, we've taken great care to brand DivaDirectories with strong female images. If someone were to use elements of our brand in a vlogcast about biknin babes or 'girls gone wild', I would be extremely offended, would see it as damaging to our brand, and you can be sure that they would hear from a not-so-happy Monique. The bottom line is that I feel that folks should have the right to control their own works. If you email them and they grant you permission, then go for it. Also, I feel a bit cheated when I click on a vlogcast and what I see is footage from a large film. I want to see ORIGINAL stuff from the vlogger. Finally, vlogs may be small now. BUT eventually vlogging and certain vlogs will get big traffic. So, we have to deal with this issue now. But, that is just my opinion. Anyway, this thread isn't supposed to be about only copyright. It's about vlogging mistakes. So, does anyone have any others. Its not wrong for you to offer it as advise, I just cant help advising that handbrake isnt the quickest/best option for most as its strength is in converting content from DVDs. [videoblogging] Re: Top Ten Vlogging Mistakes
Thanks Paul, I agree with you too. In the media world, there IS such a thing as a cease and desist. I was talking with someone from the CBC the other day (more about this subject at a later date) and he told me about how someone was compiling a Top 100 songs list for a major network he said that they got a cease and desist order from Leonard Cohen (or some boring musician like that) and they couldn't use him in the FLATTERING Top 100 show they were making. Similarly, videobloggers aren't going to instantly get sued for using copywritten music/content... they will get a cease and desist order and if they do not comply, they will then be fined or get a court order. That said, stop worrying so much about it. As long as we all know the consequences, we can remove certain files from the Internet if they are problematic. I mean, it's not like you can just call up U2 and ask if you can use their music! Personally, I wouldn't use copyrighted material if I were making money off of it, but if it's all in good fun, I think it's fair to use it. (I don't see many people complaining about the use of the Brokeback Mountain song with all the homages like Brokeback to the Future, etc.!) Re: [videoblogging] Re: do you have a video iPod?
Thank you Steve. I totally agree with your point of view. After restarting the 1.2.3 iSquint is working now. I will try 1.3 test next. The crop in iSquint is a bit in the dark if you don't have cropping experience with farious EyeTV recordings which fall all over the map of what the cropping dimensions need to be. Is Squint ffmpegx? no way to change encoding codecs that I can see right? I completely concur with your objection to the extra steps Handbrake involves. I am hoping I can get the hang of iSquint and make it work for me too. I miss the visual feedback interface in Handbrake. But I don't miss the extra time it takes to get to Handbrake. Is there any way to get iSquint to do a two pass encode? What are your objectives? to teach people videoblogging and in general media literacy. give people a place to hang out and collaborate, use equipment if they don't have their own. be a community gathering space where we can hang out and teach/learn from each other. 2. Why do you want to take on the media? if i'm reading this right, that's not our intent. more like supplementing the media and if by the media you mean big media then yeah supplement. creating an alternative might be a better way of putting it.3. How much do you charge people to go on these courses? i've never charged anyone to come to the node. and now that MNN (http://mnn.org) is teaching, it's also free there. 4. Do you all still have jobs in the film/TV industry?sometimes. as a freelancer i am often called by a couple post houses (ok like 1) to do some editing or digitizing or general techie help. though i'm moving to San Francisco and i don't know anyone there. so probably not. 5. How do you guys actually see the newbies such as myself, without any media training, videoblogging? i don't know what you mean by see? how do i perceive you? media training is not required for videoblogging. that's the point of node101 really. that you don't need a BFA in film or videomaking to do this. simple tools, simple process, cut to the chase, get your voice heard. can be as simple or as complex as you see fit. 7. Do you have ordinary jobs or do you actually work for or at Node 101? like verdi said, being a freelancer is never ordinary. it's just in my blood to not work in an office and always have odd media jobs. so that's my background and it continues to be true. Node 101 is not a job, but it is a commitment that a lot of people care about as much as a paying job. I am asking these questions just to get a feel for this group, and to get a proper perspective to the kind of people I am reading the e-mails from on a daily basis. [videoblogging] Re: do you have a video iPod?
Likewise I can see why you use handbrake, in terms of more options and ability to see the effects of cropping etc. In general I am annoyed, this stuff remains too complex, by and large. Ive just been playing with the latest iSquint and it seems to pop mov files out somethines (when encoding to h264? havent dont enough testing yet). So various things ahve changed since last time I used it. I dont think it does dualpass, unfortunately. So as ever there is still no 'one size fits all' solution, iSquint will suit some people well, but I struggle to stay up-to-date with all of the encoding options these days. Since I gave up caffeine time seems to pass very quickly, but maybe thats a good thing. Personally Im still struggling badly with what format exactly to use for crating personal video library. First I couldnt decide whether to use h264 at 320x240 or mpeg4 at a higher res. Then I ended up with both an ipod and PSP so that complicates things further. Then there are additional choices to make due to haveing HDV camera. Now Ive got a HD TV and the ipod TV out doesnt satisfy me enough. High Defintion television transmission is only just beginning in the UK, so right now I can download better quality stuff than I can get on TV or DVD. But a nother year has passed without me getting round to videoblogging. I think I am going round in circles, oh well, I should of known that my nerdy tendancy to always want to use the best option, would lead to infinite delay and confusion for me. Wibble! Cheers Steve of Elbows --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Kunga [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Thank you Steve. I miss that too. -- Taylor Barcroft Santa Cruz CA, Beach of the Silicon Valley URL http://FutureMedia.org RSS http://feeds.feedburner.com/FutureMedia iTunes http://tinyurl.com/8ql87 barcroft (gizmo) kungax (Skype) kungag5 (iChat-AIM) On Mar 13, 2006, at 1:01 PM, Steve Watkins wrote: If you enjoy trying different options then I suggest maybe having a go with the newest test version of isquint, as they have fixed some audio sync issues and other sutff, who knows it may fix your problem. Its not wrong for you to offer it as advise, I just cant help advising that handbrake isnt the quickest/best option for most as its strength is in converting content from DVDs. Yahoo! [videoblogging] iPod Movie format issues
Title: iPod Movie format issues on my video blog, portlandjazzjams.blip.tv, a friend wrote this: *** Of the 6 people I've sent links to for the Fireside episode, all 6 report they can't see it, even on Macs and even after upgrading to the latest version of QT. Of my own 4 PCs, I can only see it on one. All others are audio-only, again after the lengthy process of downloading the newest QuickTime. Might I suggest using a less touchy, more standard file format, like mpg or even mov? I thought the Quicktime 7 upgrade would fix everyone, but evidently not. I'm willing to burn a special iPod Movie version for those that wind up as iTunes podcasts, and a separate version for the video blog, if that's what it takes. [videoblogging] Re: do you have a video iPod?
OK, my highly placed insider (seriously!) at Apple podcasting says the following: Not a great answer here. The QuickTime people tell us that the latest version of Quicktime Pro only creates iPod-playable files with the Export to iPod option. They're working on a fix for the next version, but for now it's no longer possible to create iPod playable video with the h.264 mp4 export option. Frustrating to people because the export to iPod option creates larger file sizes. It doesn't tell us much that we don't know, and doesn't really make sense - since an .m4v file that you get with the ipod export option is just a h.264 mpeg4 anyway. But there you have it. Waz www.crashtestkitchen.com --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, Steve Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Its a good strategy but Im not sure whether this option gives you mpeg4 files or h264 files? Re: [videoblogging] Blip and Flash
i think i see what you may be referring to now. i see that blip is using some sort of flash player on their site - i had not noticed if i have the right feed, it seems to be made up of .mov's only http://k9disc.blip.tv/?1=1skin=rss so if i understand correctly you are asking how do you control what kind of player blip uses *on your blip.tv blog* this does not seem to effect (in my case) my blogger or typepad blogs - they just reference the mov files it also does not seem to effect the rss feed either (in my case or in yours it seems) so i think it's just a question about how it appears on the blip site but still a good question. i dunno the answer. probably should ask this in the blip.tv group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/blip-users Markus Sandy wrote: i don't think this has to do with blip unless you're using some feature I'm not aware of what are your site and feed urls? are you posting links to both a flash and quicktime versions of your video? perhaps you just need to reverse their order what aggregator are you using to view the feed? fireant? I shoot standard DV in widescreen, and I've had no complaints from viewers. In fact I see a trend from others to move in that direction, and its actually great to be able to play with the extra frame space. Perhaps part of the problem is the marketing of HDTV which speaks of resolution and aspect ratios as if they're only in the HD domain. They're not. widescreen is an aspect ratio, and has nothing to do with resolution/high definition (HD). My recommendation would be NOT to publish standard DV widescreen in 4:3 letterbox. Publish widescreen as widescreen. That's the beauty of TV free media, the aspect ratios can be anything, and if watching on TV, it should automatically adjust to the incoming ratio. I'm sure there a way to go straight from DV to MP4 that will play on both iPods and PSP. Like ffmpegX: http:// homepage.mac.com/major4/ Yahoo! Awww... you see, there really is love in the vlogging world after all. Yes Richard, I knew she meant you. But what I thought was an amusing gag, has perhaps been peceived as something else? [videoblogging] SF Vloggercon Hotels?
Can someone suggest an affordable hotel near the SF Vloggercon venue (2174 Market St)? The closer the better since I'll be walking and taking taxis.
