As for my using YouTube, these are other people's videos and although I could download them onto my own server, I don't want to scrape them and remove them from their context, stats, etc. I am still using vPIP all the time. One virtue of vPIP is that it minimizes the latency in starting a video download. In most cases, it is almost instant. [videoblogging] B H Disappointment
I've been doing business with B H for over 20 years. A lot of business. And all that time, I've been an ardent B H booster. I called them today and explained that I'm considering buying a Sony HVR Z5 and wanted to know when it would be available as they are not in stock. I also explained that I live 2 hours away and would like to make an appointment to come down and look at one. The salesman told me that I did not have to make an appointment, I could always come and look at a demonstrator. It is on a tripod. I asked if I could hold it and see how it balances, etc., because all my shooting is hand-held. He said no, it would have to stay on the tripod. No appointment or other arrangement could be made. I asked what he thought I should do and he made the suggestion that I should go to a rental house and rent one for a weekend. Now this is a $5,000 plus purchase and I feel that I should have the opportunity to hold one in my hands and look through the finder before I buy it. Right now, this is a deal-breaker. I am not going to buy a camera that I am not allowed to even hold. My question to the group: Any suggestions for a reliable dealer in the New York area with prices in the same range as B H? Or Boston? I've been dealing up until now exclusively with B H so I have no experience with alternates. Rupert http://twittervlog.tv I don't want to start a debate here, but there are some trade-offs depending on what kind of shooting you are doing. If you are trying to be unobtrusive and not call attention to the camera, there is something to be said about using a camera that has a rotating viewfinder like the Xacti. You do not have to hold the camera straight out in front of you in order to frame. I often hold the camera below chest-level and tilt the screen up. That way I can also brace my wrist against my body for steadiness. As I pointed out earlier, the pistol grip is great, but it can cause the camera to wobble because the center of gravity is above your hand. With my weight modification it is much steadier. I can form a loose ring around the pistol grip and the weight forms a gimbal mount. You can make great moves. I shot a friend's wedding quite extensively and a couple of weeks later I ran into the hired photographer who had no idea that I had been shooting video. Rupert, I use the E1 on occasion as a carry camera. I just want to contribute some experience that might improve the quality of the E2, too. First, I found the camera very hard to hold steady and get smooth moves because the center of gravity was too high. I rigged up a weight that I could screw into the tripod socket (fortunately it's a 1/4 20 stove bolt thread). It was a kind of shim from a combine that one of the local farmers gave me. It was the heaviest/smallest thing I could find and it really works well. If you would like a photo, I could post one. But the weight made a huge difference. Short of using the combine shim, I'm sure you can rummage something up and try it. The other tip. I found it really impossible to shoot on a sunny day because of the glossy finish (waterproof protection?) on the screen. Tried a hood, but that was dinky and annoying. Next best thing was something from my old TV studio days. Dulling spray. Wipes off easily, puts on a nice matte finish that cuts down the glare. I like having a waterproof/weatherproof camera. This watch but dont touch mentality is being firmly entrenched in our minds with Youtube leading the way since there is no easy way to grab a Youtube video from the site. Youtube being the largest video site has the greatest impact on how we understand correct interaction. So as creators, our relationship is this: you make a video. I watch. I make a video for you to watch. We do not use each others videos. if you replaced text where I said video, you would not have blogging as we know it today. I think Jay is right from the creators' perspective, but I would like to look at this from a different angle, namely the relationship between a video maker and the subject. When I ask for permission to photograph someone without a written release, I usually explain why I am taking the video and what it will be used for. Often it is implicitly understood. Neither I nor my subjects have had any problems with this. However, if someone grabs that same material and re-edits it or embeds it in another site, then it interferes with the trust between me and my subject. I was a documentary film maker for many years (many years ago). Even with a written release people gave consent because they trusted me and knew the purpose of the film and where and how it would be shown. Believe me, I have worked on many controversial projects and have never been asked to prescreen for approval. It was trust and the technical consideration that I never allowed these films to be available for stock footage. Now with video the access is more open. My YouTube videos are usually put up without the embed code. If they link to my site, well, that is understood and I only put up videos that are appropriate for that. I have been chided for not allowing other videomakers to re-mix my materials. Call it what you will, but it is against the trust I have with my subjects. I guess all I am saying is that it depends on the content. Stan Hirson http://hestakaup.com

Part of my frustration is that the community, rather than cheering on businesses that are trying to put food on videoblogger's tables, actually turn and attack and not in a helpful way and when someone is under attack I don't see many in this community come and stand up against the mob. I just looked back on the last few days of posts here and I see pretty predictable results from my outburst. But you didn't get the point. I can bite my lip when it's me under attack (although, no, it's not fun) but when I see a repeated pattern I felt I needed to speak out about it and this community has often not been friendly to those of us who are trying to make businesses that get more of us paid. Let's turn it away from PodTech. Have any of you thanked Revision3? Rocketboom? Huffington Post? Federated Media? Jason Calacanis? It seems to me that there is a schism here of people who want to break into show business and those who want to blog with video and create their own websites. They would like recognition and compensation, but they do not particularly want to break through to show biz. I found the Vloggies and a lot of what was going on at PodTech as encouraging the show biz folk. This was really apparent from Robert Scoble's post on his own blog at the time of the Vloggies: http://scobleizer.com/2006/11/05/more-from-the-vloggies/ OK, I have a complete list of winners from the Vloggies up now the big winners was Alive in Baghdad (they got the only standing ovation of the evening). Interestingly enough, before the Vloggies, I had never seen their stuff and it really is incredible. I'm slowing going through the list and will share my favorites from time to time. I love Ze Frank and Rocketboom, but there's really a lot more incredible work being done out there and I'm glad we got a chance to highlight just a little bit of that tonight. I could not believe that at that time, in November, 2006, Robert Scoble had never seen any of Alive in Baghdad. It made such an impression on me that I saved the quote. I have nothing against Scoble, but I do feel he has helped polarize this space or community or whatever. There is nothing wrong with wanting to break into show business. And there is nothing wrong with using small tv to do it. Maybe online video will be like Second City, Off Broadway and regional theatre in that it will allow people to make mistakes and learn some acting techniques to they can go on and do sitcoms. Fine. I'm having a lot of trouble with their terminology. I am currently using DreamHost for my videos. Other than a few glitches, it's been pretty good and it certainly is cheap. But I am planning a new project that will require almost instant streaming of .SWF files to an international audience. Apparently Amazon has the resources to fill these needs. I just cannot figure out the costs. I use 3GB of disk space and 60GB of bandwidth per month. But I just can't make out their jargon. I wrote AWS and they suggested I ask in their forum. I don't understand a word of it! Has anyone had any experience with progressive downloads of Flash videos with them? Stan Hirson http://hestakaup.com This was all good help for me. Nathan's explanation of the costs as so close to what I am paying on DreamHost encouraged me to do some tests. I would like to share the results. Opening an account through Amazon was very easy, same as for book shopping. Setting up the file system was straightforward once I was able to figure out some of the terminology. For example, in Amazonese, bucket corresponds to folder. There is easily enough Googled documentation on this. I uploaded the files using a FireFox plugin, S3 Organizer. I tested some short SWF files first and, of course, nothing worked. It turns out I had to set permissions by editing an ACL file (whatever) so that everyone could read the file. Then the SWFs worked. As I use vPIP in my site, there was no problem pointing at the AWS file by copying the path in S3 although it looks a bit odd compared with the familiar apache files. Feeling cocky, I then moved to the big time, longer FLV files sending up the player as a SWF. And then the heavens opened with a huge dump! The FLV files did not play and the forums had lots and lots of talk about the impossibility of playing Flash FLV files in Amazon because of cross domain issues, etc. and all kinds of computer and Amazonese I could not understand. It looked like a total loser for the longer FLV videos. Then I realized that all I had to do was set up vPIP to use its built-in FLV player. Gave that a shot and it worked! There are still some problems. I wanted a minimum amount of pre-loading -- none if possible -- and I can not do it with the vPIP player. I get the spinning cobweb for a few seconds. It works well enough and if there is a way to get it to pop on instantly and play, that would be great. To show how S3 works, I made a simple HTML page with a comparison of the DreamHost hosting using an ON2 player and the Amazon S3 with the vPIP player. See for yourslf: http://shirson.com/web_pages/amazon_compare.html I've picked a scene with difficult compression: 30 fps with moving horses and landscapes. The motion should be smooth and fluid. 480 x 360. Thanks Jay, Chris, Nathan, and Markus for your help. I thought I should pay back and share the results. Stan Hirson http://hestakaup.com

But when the video becomes an end in itself, that it can stand on its own without the support and interaction with the rest of the media on a website, I just don't see why it should be considered a vlog. It can be an episode in a show and aggregated on any number of services, or it can just be a video. That's fine. But in this discussion, about why maintain a site rather than just upload videos, it seems that the other media on a site can be used for a purpose other than just to hang videos together. They can be complementary to the videos. And just as important. That's what a vlog is all about. When I considered coming back to film making after being in another career for years, I hesitated because of the constraints of working in arbitrary lengths and linear formats. I am now experimenting with making a website that explores one subject in depth and variety and gives the visitor the power to select the content in a non-linear (non-chronological) format. I love it. If this technology existed years ago I would not have left the field! I had to forgo blogging software and use a content management system (Joomla) in order that stories did not get buried in archives but were part of a menu. I¹m tending toward dreamhost, which seems to give me more control and I could use their QT streaming capabilities. Would this be a good choice ? Any other guidance regarding this is much appreciated! Thanks. * DF I think it is a question of what you see as the purpose of your site or vlog. Blip was great for me to start off with and I owe them a lot. But I soon decided that I wanted to explore one subject in depth through video and text and I switched to a conent management system, iJoomla because it had the flexibility I wanted in designing my own site. I host the site, http://hestakaup.com, on Dreamhost and have no complaints. It may be one of the narrowest-niche sites on the internet, about Icelandic horses, but it allows me the freedom to explore a subject with minimal software constraints. In fact, I don't know whether my site is still a vlog. I have streaming videos integrated with text and I organize the content with a menu system rather than a time-line. Thus, there are no archives to dig through. I would do some serious thinking about formats. If you have a target audience that is going to download, then QT formats are fine. But if you want to allow people to stream (as I do), then I think Flash is much better at a 512 kbs bitrate with an embedded player. I use On2 Flix Pro for encoding. You can see samples of what I mean on http://hestakaup.com Whatever you do, good luck! Stan Hirson http://hestakaup.com

The more I see of this thread, the more I realize that there is a broad spectrum of CMSs that range in complexity as well as quality. I have a friend who develops in Drupal because it has some kind of community development functionality. OK. Escapes me. He loves it. He took a stab at Joomla! and found it confusing. I have been working in Joomla! because I find it flexible enough to do what I want it to quite easily. And I am not a programmer or developer. I am a documentary film maker. From what I have been able to see, Joomla! and Mambo, in spite of their silly names, are sensible systems that are not for everyone, but they do make it possible for non-coders or non-programmers (like myself) to muck around and get the results they seek. I could have gone with Dreamweaver, Front Page, etc. I chose Joomla! because it was free, I liked the templates, and it seemed easy enough to learn. When I first started putting video on the internet, a little less than a year ago, I thought WordPress was over my head so I went with Blogger and then TypePad. Then moved over to Joomla! in August because I wanted a menu-driven content system and blogging software did not lend itself to that without an awful lot of kludging. To tell the truth, RSS and MRSS both escape me for now. Joomla! allows me to send email to registered guests whenever and however I want. And I count on search engines to bring people to my site. My visitors have absolutely no interest in looking at my site on a mobile device. A good streaming Flash at 500 kbs works fine. Joomla allows me to focus on the content -- the text and the video. Please go this site and see for yourself: http://www.adobe.com/products/player_census/flashplayer/version_penetrat\ ion.html The 98 per cent -- or thereabouts -- penetration is for earlier versions. Flash 8 has much better quality for streaming than the earlier versions and, in my opinion, is well worth looking into for vlogging. But. And it is a big butt. You need a Flash 8 Player to look at Flash 8 video. It is a plugin for the browser, but there have been many, many, problems with the upgrade for IE on Windows for people who are not computer literate. Adobe has been dreadful about promoting the players for the general public. I have been dealing with this issue since January, 2006. People who have just gotten used to email and Google searching are terrified to update because the process is -- to them -- very daunting. You know, people over 30... While many of the visitors to vlogging sites are comfortable with the update process, I have found that the great unwashed of the general public gets frustrated with the upgrade process. While it is true that adoption rates for Flash 8 are climbing, none of the major aggregators such as Youtube, Google Video, etc. are streaming Flash 8. If you want to see what computer chaos would be like, imagine what would happen if they converted. On2 Technologies, the outfit that licenses the Flash 8 compression code to Adobe and others helped me with the player problem by putting up a site that will do an express install (no need for user intervention) for all platforms. You are welcome to use it and link to it: http://on2.com/flashtest Now Adobe is making noise about a Flash 9 player coming out very soon. Does that mean that Flash 8 will be replaced? I can't really say that it isn't my personal version of what transpired, but in a sense that's what news is, an observers version of what they feel has transpired. This issue interests me on many levels. First, I have worked in broadcast television as a documentary film maker in situations where I also covered hard news. For example, way back in 1963, one of my first projects was to cover the South during the civil rights activities in Birmingham, Selma, Greenwood Mississippi, etc. I still see footage on tv that I shot then. But I was there in a professional role, working for National Educational Television, the precursor of PBS. My understanding of that role, and my expeience and training leading up to it, was that I was to film as objectively as I could (granted all the adrenaline and testosterone flowiing) in order to convey as accurately as possible what took place. I have since gone on to work in cinema verite films and established a reputation for accuracy in film making. It is my sense that back in those days law enforcement on the scene had a certain respect for guys with film cameras becaue they could easily spot the pros and trusted them. It was only much later that I was hassled just becaue I was shooting something. And that is when I was carrying what looked like an amateur video camera. I really need to give this subject more thought. It is important now because there is talk on this list, as well as in the newspaper article in this thread, about citizen journalists (or whatever) taking over the media and that traditional broadcast media will be obsolete. Frankly, fine and good because they deserve a foul fate. But I worry about two things: the large broadcast companies (networks) convene the community as a whole to events and provide a common reference point for discussion across cultural and socio-economic lines. And the second point I worry about is the loss of a certain professional role and skills in the coverage of news events. I am still feeling my way through these issues in my vlogging activities. But I thought I should offer my past experience to this discussion. News coverage to the whole community, not just a series of people preaching to various choirs, is terribly important to a democracy. I am worried about it. On2, the company that actually did the Flash compression code that Adobe MM licensed, put up a site for the FlashObject Express Install so that a novice user can update to Flash 8 with minimal intervention. [videoblogging] Flash Player Express Install Experience?
Has anyone had any experience using the Express Install to update to Flash 8 Players? I am using TypePad with Flash 8 videos and am very pleased with the way it is working out. The only problem is that some of the public are having problems updating to the new Flash player. There are Windows IE issues, etc. I would like to stick with the Flash 8 videos because the quality is so good and I know that pretty soon the Flash 8 market penetration will be enough to get the players out there. I think I am just a bit ahead of the curve right now. There is some FlashObject code that developers are using to generate an Express Install that seems to work very well and solves the update problems. I have no idea in the world what to do with it and I cannot, quite frankly, make heads or tails of most of links that deal with it. John,First, I want to thank you very much for your response. --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, John Dowdell [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm not sure what error text members of your audience have seen, but if I were guessing, it would be about admin permissions on that computer, that seems to be the most frequent issue these days. But there's a short guide to Windows troubleshooting here: http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/knowledgebase/index.cfm?id=tn_15511#install_winThis is, in fact, a good guide and relatively simple for a "power user" like myself. There are some other troubleshooting guides (from MM employees...) on the MM forum that I would recommend because of the regedit steps. The admin permissions issues seem to take place on corporate networks. That is not the case here.I am getting hard evidence that visitors to my site are:1. not willing to leave it for another site for an update2. not bothering to read directions... if they can't see the movies, they move on3. updating, but the update does not take and they get very confused looking for a program rather than a plugin4. confused by the complexity of the Adobe Flash upgrade site and cannot find the directions on the overly busy sitge and do not scroll down far enough.I know that there are issues with permissions and root admin access, but that is, I believe, the case with networks and companies. My visitors do not, for the most part, go to the site from networks. I know this is an issue with the Express Install. I would like to stick with the Flash 8 videos because the quality is so good and I know that pretty soon the Flash 8 market penetration will be enough to get the players out there. I think I am just a bit ahead of the curve right now. Maybe not. ;-) Here's a chronology of some really amazing adoption rates: Aug 31 05: Flash Player 8 released to general public, and immediately sees 4-5 million *completed* installations per day. Dec 15 05: NPD/MediaMetrix discovers 50% of consumers tested could see SWF8 content. Today: The March consumer audit won't be live on the site for awhile yet, but the new On2 codec should be up about 70% general consumer viewability by now, I'd wager. Results of the December consumer audit: http://www.macromedia.com/software/player_census/flashplayer/version_penetration.html Okay. I'm familiar with these figures and have even linked to some of them just to reassure people that I am not too far out there with Flash 8. But this is where it gets interesting. As the market saturates, you start picking up more of the "civilians" and newbies rather than the early adopters who are already there and can deal with problems and, in fact, expect them. Now we are picking up people who are easily confused and, having just gotten somewhat comfortable with email, do not want to be bothered learning how to install new software. These "holdouts" are the toughest cases. And that's what I am getting. You may dispute the logic, but I am getting the anecdotal evidence and see the system stats. And on the forum that I visit on the MM site, I am finding that lots of developers are having this problem. There is some FlashObject code that developers are using to generate an Express Install that seems to work very well and solves the update problems. I have no idea in the world what to do with it and I cannot, quite frankly, make heads or tails of most of links that deal with it. I want to, somehow, get it into TypePad. Anyone have any experience with this? Not sure... got link? The Express Install docs on the Adobe site seems to be working pretty smoothly for people on the mailing lists, but I know that lots of people like to customize any standard routine too.The major problem I know of with Express Install is the admin permissions on networks. [videoblogging] Why LIFO? Any way to change to FIFO in Blogger?
Hi,I'm posting again, it seems, on consequitve days with queries. But the folks on this list have been so helpful with my beginner's questions on compression and file linking, I thought I would ask something that is not quite so technical, but really basic to me. I am starting a video blog to get the eperience and because I want to participate in this medium. My background, among other things is a documentary film maker. What I like about vlogging is that it can allow me -- I think and hope -- to present a subject in a recursive and nonlinear way, unlike a traditional documentary film. I can share my exploration and learning-process with the viewer. I can look at a subject and then come back later with a clearer understanding or a deeper question. It's sort of looping around in an irregular patternI have been using Blogger. What bothers me now that I have been doing this for a few days, is that I am being forced back into a linear mode because of the date/journal quality of the software. It is like a diary that you cannot start at the beginning. Oh, sure, people can dig into archives, scroll down and up in ways that are unfamiliar to them, but it's not going to happen. I think I would rather start at the beginning and develop ideas in a progression for the audience just the way I am doing it for myself as I spin the vlog.I can't figure out how to do this within Blogger. And there are many reasons why I would like to stick with Blogger right now. Is there a fix or is there something similar that would have the flexibity of Blogger? Thanks,Stan YAHOO! [videoblogging] 3ivx compression -- Help!
I've been doing some tests with 3ivx and QuickTime, but have not been getting file size economy that is any better than MPEG4 or H.264. I got the idea of usinig 3ivx from the Rocketboom tools documentation. It was very helpful and generous, but I'm afraid I need some more guidance aboput specific settings. The whole subject of compression has been, quite frankly, something that I've been avoiding because it is so confusing with its own language and parameters that, to me, don't make much sense. I am developing a vlog that will a lot of footage of horses in motion. I am trying to keep the bit rate as low as possible to avoid stuttering while showing some sense of motion as clean as possible on DSL bandwidth. What I am looking for from this list is some pointers to instruction about compression that is somewhere between the Freevlog tutorials and the 3ivx documentation. I'd appreciate any advice.ThanksStan Hirsonhestakaup.blogspot.com SPONSORED LINKS Individual Fireant Typepad Use YAHOO! GROUPS LINKS Visit your group "videoblogging" on the web.
