Re: Phone settings for the 8 Plus

2018-05-17 Thread Anna Dresner
Hello Bill,

Go to Settings, and choose Display & Brightness. One of the options on that
screen is Raise to Wake. If you turn it off, your phone won't talk when you
move it around if the screen is locked.

As for making gestures you don't intend, I would suggest going to Settings,
choosing General, then Accessibility, then VoiceOver. On that screen is an
option called VoiceOver Practice. If you double-tap that, you open a screen
where you can try out the various gestures. VoiceOver will tell you which
gesture it thinks you performed and what that gesture does. Once you get
familiar with the gestures, you're less likely to perform ones you didn't
intend. there's a done button in the upper right corner of the screen that you
can use to stop practicing.

I hope that helps.

Best,
Anna

VoiceOver, Apple Maps, Yelp, and Google Trips Make for a Fabulous Vacation

2018-05-17 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Everyone,

I just returned from a 4-day mini vacation to Seattle, Washington.

I planned my entire sightseeing excursions using the Google Trips app. In
addition, I used the Apple Maps transit directions and walking directions
the entire time. All of this via VoiceOver. Oh, yes, I used Yelp,
extensively, also.

Seattle has a mono-rail, a light rail system, and several bus systems. It
is truly a metropolitan destination.

I stayed at a hotel in downtown Seattle. So, for example, I took the light
rail to the downtown area and then walked about 20 minutes to my hotel. The
Apple Maps directions were perfect. I really liked the fact that I could
easily track each train stop along the way so that I knew exactly where to
exit the coach. I did not realize, until this trip that one can use swiping
gestures to navigate along any transit route in order to monitor one's
progress along the route. Very, very impressive.

I won't bore you with the details but I will tell you that, thanks to the
Google Trips app, along with Apple Maps, and Yelp, I toured the Space
Needle, went to the Waterfall Garden Park, home of the original UPS store,
took an underground city tour, took a 1-hour harbor crews tour, explored
Pike Square, Pioneer Square, Bell Town, the Market Square, went to the
original Starbucks, took a ride on the largest Ferris Wheel on the west
coast, shopped at the new Amazon Go store (an absolutely amazing experience,
to say the least), and ate at some marvelous restaurants.

My point? I used public transportation, only. No Uber, Lift, or taxis.
Also, I decided what I was going to do, mostly on the fly, using the Google
Trips app.

Now I'm not saying that the trip didn't have its challenges, for example,
there is a lot of construction going on in downtown Seattle and I needed a
lot of sighted assistance in order to navigate around it, but I am saying
that I am certain I would not have had as much fun without my beloved iPHone
8 Plus and several very crucial apps such as Yelp, Apple Maps, the Amazon Go
app, and of course, Google Trips for iOS.

Now I am not suggesting that a blind or low vision person can rely on any
technology, alone, in order to explore a major city. After all, at this
point in history, technology is far from perfect. And, when it's all said
and done, what really made my vacation possible, was good old fashion people
skills as sighted assistance was absolutely necessary for many of the
activities described above. Be that as it may, with the help of technology,
I was able to independently explore the major city attractions and decide
how I wanted to spend my time.

Let me add that, while I had a backup battery with me, I did not use it.
The battery life on my 8 Plus was beyond amazing. Even after over 12 hours
of use, I didn't run out of juice. Regardless, I was glad to have a mobile
charging source with me, just in case.

While I had a lot of fun, I am delightfully exhausted and glad to be back.
For, as the saying goes, "there's no place like home." (smile)

Mark

Re: purchasing IPad vs. mini IPad

2018-05-17 Thread 'RobH.' via VIPhone
I'll watch this thread with interest.

Afaik, iOs should work the same on all iPads, anything else would border on
being a bug. iPad Pro could well be the exception
mind. So it should come down to how physically Big do you want to have to
handle. I have only used iPad Mini for some years now,
fits in hand(s) well enough. More than that I'd want to use on a desk. But
the pc and real keyboard live there, which is partly
why I never went up to bigger size. For the amount I do, a bigger phone would
do, not as main phone, just as wifi connected
browser/mailer.

Jmo, RobH.

I am thinking of purchasing either an IPad or mini IPad.

I currently have a mini IPad II, and before I buy a later model, I am looking
for some advice and opinions on which mini IPads are
best and would it be better to go ahead and purchase an IPad.

If an IPad is recommended, which ones work best with VO?

Thanks.

How to Cancel a Reminder in the Amazon Alexa App

2018-05-17 Thread Craig Werner
Greetings, everyone.

I can't figure out how to cancel a reminder in the Alexa app. When I go to
"Reminders," Voiceover speaks each of the reminders I have set, but when I
double-tap on one of them, I can't find a way to edit or cancel it. The
rotor doesn't have an "Actions" option. Thanks for all help.

FaceTime calls and the speaker

2018-05-17 Thread 'Sandy Tomkins' via VIPhone
Hi,

I have had iphones since the very first 4 came out, but have never used
Facetime! I just tried it and found it did work, but the sound was routed
through the small speaker, the one used by the phone, how can I get it to route
via the large speaker at the bottom of the phone?
Thanks, Sandy.

Re: purchasing iPad vs. mini iPad

2018-05-17 Thread christopher hallsworth
Hi I would say do not get a mini unless you absolutely cannot cope with the
larger 9.7-inch screen. I recently acquired the 2018 iPad for just £319.00 and
it was worth every penny and this is coming from a 2013 iPad Mini.

Re: The best color identifyer that would work on an Iphone 5s

2018-05-17 Thread 'Sandy Tomkins' via VIPhone
Hi,

Something I have noticed, when we discuss these colour identifier apps is:
people don't seem to grasp the fact that colours are merely light waves, and
so, change according to the light source. Electric lights change the colour,
compared with daylight or sunshine. So, in different circumstances, you get
different results. Saying this, when I use the seeing ai app, it quite often
says "grey" when the article is absolutely not grey. Also, i am wondering, if
there is more than the chosen article visible on the screen, how does the app
choose which colour to identify? For example, a red flowered vest on a white
bed cover?

If it helps at all, I have found camfind to be very good at recognising
articles and describing patterns and colours.

Just my thoughts, but something I would love to see if an app which had and
"led" mode, which would tell me the status of led lights, how many are visible,
what is their status, blinking, colour etc.

Thanks, Sandy.

Re: how to get the newsline app on the ipad

2018-05-17 Thread Arlene
Donna, thank you for this link. This may seem like a silly question, but would
we type the link into the edit searchbox for the app store, or do a search with
the title of the app as you have it here, in the search edit box of the app
store? Thank you.

We've tried to search several times now on the ipad for the newsline ap,
and have done it in different ways in order to find it, but no results for the
newsline. We tried searching in the app store as
nfb-newsline mobile app
nfb news line
If anyone knows how to search for newsline on the ipad please let me know.
Thank you By the way we never had trouble finding the newsline app on the
phone. Thanks again.

Seeking tips/tricks for teaching sighted family members use Spotify?

2018-05-17 Thread Gerardo Corripio
Firstly very good Thursday morning to you'll! This time around is I'm
seeking tips/tricks for teaching sighted family members to use Spotify;
it's sometimes frustrating trying to tell them for instance "it should
say Settings" and they don't see anything regarding Settings but some
symbols that I guess represent Settings! So what symbol would this be,
to tell them instead "look for the symbol that looks like this on the
top right of the screen".

I've also the same question of what symbol and where exactly onscreen,
is the button while playing a song, kind of below the Home button, that
Voiceover refers to as "Open the now-playing screen" on when we flick
left, we hear the name of the currently-playing song, and into which we
can go into use the player via the rewind, fast-forward etc? what symbol
is this represented by, and where is it?

other tips/tricks you guys might have to be able to teach sighted family
to use Spotify would be very beneficial! I'm kind of having a
frustrating time in this scenario!

RE: FaceTime calls and the speaker

2018-05-17 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Facetime Audio works the same as a regular call for me, if I move the phone
away from my ear it switches to speakerphone mode.
Facetime with video usually goes straight to the speakerphone since the
assumption is you want the other person to see you so you are not holding your
phone up to your ear hence providing an up close view of the side of your head
*smile*.
Also, if you use Facetime and you are using it to show something to the other
person you can look for a "Flip Camera" button and if you double tap it the
back camera will be used instead of the front camera which I sthe default.

Hi,

I have had iphones since the very first 4 came out, but have never used
Facetime! I just tried it and found it did work, but the sound was routed
through the small speaker, the one used by the phone, how can I get it to route
via the large speaker at the bottom of the phone?
Thanks, Sandy.

VoiceOver labels, how are they applied and where are they stored.

2018-05-17 Thread Malcolm Parfitt
Hello,

There has been a discussion on Applevis lately that some of you may have read
and followed.

The topic I refer to is concerned with adding labels to images and their use
with VoiceOver.

Packages like Envision AI and TapTapSee allow us to save an image along with
the description obtained via the app.

This information is held in the Image Description field of an image and can be
updated and changed by packages like ExifEditor and announced by VoiceOver.

One solution to the graphics labelling question that was posted on Applevis was
to use the double-tap and hold method available with VoiceOver to write a
description. However if you modify the image with other software this label is
lost.

So my question is this. How are labels treated by Voiceover what criterion is
used to determine the match between the object and its label. Where are these
object labels stored.

As an experiment I attached a VoiceOver label to a photograph and launched the
Photos App on another iPhone and the label I applied using my first device was
spoken by my second one. So obviously this information was shared by both
devices.

Any information gladly received.

Malcolm

The best bang for your buck on an iPad right now is the new Apple 9.7 inch
model. The mini four is, in my opinion, too old. If they had come out with a
new one with the same processor as the new iPad 9.7, then I would think that
would be a good choice. But they didn’t. You have to figure on upgradability,
and how much longer is that mini four going to be upgradable. Wouldn’t touch it
with a 10 foot pole. You can get the 9.7 inch model with 32 GB for $300 right
now at Best Buy. If you have a little more money, an extra hundred gets you 128
GB. I’m sure the pro models have better audio, and of course better displays.
But as a blind person, who cares? I mean about the display. And I can’t imagine
that whatever improvement there is with the audio is worth all that extra
money. But that is in the ear of the beholder. Like you, I have an iPad Mini
too. And I keep hoping that they’re going to upgrade that model with a better
processor. But it hasn’t happened, and signs point to it not happening. So, if
you want to stick with an iPad, that 9.7 form factor is the smallest thing
you’re going to get. Your other option I suppose would be to hang onto your
current phone, whatever model it is, get a new phone and turn your old phone
into a replacement for your iPad mini two.

Subject: VoiceOver, Apple Maps, Yelp, and Google Trips Make for a Fabulous
Vacation

Hello Everyone,

I just returned from a 4-day mini vacation to Seattle, Washington.

I planned my entire sightseeing excursions using the Google Trips app. In
addition, I used the Apple Maps transit directions and walking directions the
entire time. All of this via VoiceOver. Oh, yes, I used Yelp, extensively,
also.

Seattle has a mono-rail, a light rail system, and several bus systems. It is
truly a metropolitan destination.

I stayed at a hotel in downtown Seattle. So, for example, I took the light
rail to the downtown area and then walked about 20 minutes to my hotel. The
Apple Maps directions were perfect. I really liked the fact that I could
easily track each train stop along the way so that I knew exactly where to exit
the coach. I did not realize, until this trip that one can use swiping
gestures to navigate along any transit route in order to monitor one's progress
along the route. Very, very impressive.

I won't bore you with the details but I will tell you that, thanks to the
Google Trips app, along with Apple Maps, and Yelp, I toured the Space Needle,
went to the Waterfall Garden Park, home of the original UPS store, took an
underground city tour, took a 1-hour harbor crews tour, explored Pike Square,
Pioneer Square, Bell Town, the Market Square, went to the original Starbucks,
took a ride on the largest Ferris Wheel on the west coast, shopped at the new
Amazon Go store (an absolutely amazing experience, to say the least), and ate
at some marvelous restaurants.

My point? I used public transportation, only. No Uber, Lift, or taxis.
Also, I decided what I was going to do, mostly on the fly, using the Google
Trips app.

Now I'm not saying that the trip didn't have its challenges, for example, there
is a lot of construction going on in downtown Seattle and I needed a lot of
sighted assistance in order to navigate around it, but I am saying that I am
certain I would not have had as much fun without my beloved iPHone
8 Plus and several very crucial apps such as Yelp, Apple Maps, the Amazon Go
app, and of course, Google Trips for iOS.

Now I am not suggesting that a blind or low vision person can rely on any
technology, alone, in order to explore a major city. After all, at this point
in history, technology is far from perfect. And, when it's all said and done,
what really made my vacation possible, was good old fashion people skills as
sighted assistance was absolutely necessary for many of the activities
described above. Be that as it may, with the help of technology, I was able to
independently explore the major city attractions and decide how I wanted to
spend my time.

Let me add that, while I had a backup battery with me, I did not use it.
The battery life on my 8 Plus was beyond amazing. Even after over 12 hours of
use, I didn't run out of juice. Regardless, I was glad to have a mobile
charging source with me, just in case.

While I had a lot of fun, I am delightfully exhausted and glad to be back.
For, as the saying goes, "there's no place like home." (smile)

Mark

don’t make sense. If I am listening to an audio book on an iPad and I get a
phone call I want to take it interrupts me anyways and in fact if I am
listening on the iPad I first have to pause the iPad whereas on my iPhone
whatever is playing pauses automatically when the phone rings and resumes again
when I’m done. As for battery I just get a new one put in should it gert to the
point where it doesn’t hold it’s charge any more, it’s a lot cheaper than
spending $500 or more on an Ipad. If I am travelling there isn’t that much I
can’t do on my iPhone compared to an iPad. I can see that if you use braille
input the large iPad might be good, but if I really want to be able to type a
lot I can just bring a bluetooth keyboard and use my iPhone. Some people also
make the point about sound quality being bertter on an iPad and that is
probably true due to it’s larger speakers which can be further apart, but you
can just as easily use a bluetooth speaker if you want good sound quality. This
has the added benefit that you can get one that is waterproof so if like me you
listen to a lot of audio books you can bring it into the shower or outside etc.
I am doing a fair bit of work outside right now getting my garden and yard into
shape after a long and very snowy winter and I also do some woodworking either
in my shop downstairs or outside and I can just have my iPhone in a safe spot
in my belt case or put somewhere nearby and use my very tough dust and
waterproof bluetooth speaker. If I am using any woodworking power tools which
are noisy I wear ear protection anyways and I have a set of ear protection
which have bluetooth as wel as a built-in FM radio so I can listen to the radio
or my book or music on my iPhone. If you buy an iPad it’s another expensive
device which you have to maintain and upgrade every 3 to 5 years, it won’t
replace your iPhone so now you have to maintain and upgrade two devices. I also
have an Apple Watch which I like because of the fitness/health application and
to me that is more useful than an iPad and as it’s a piece of technology which
also has a finite time before it needs to be upgraded, if you now have an
iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch then things are starting to get really expensive.

Re: IPhone versess IPad

2018-05-17 Thread Vicki W.
I can't speak for everyone, but in my case, my mini IPad, because it is smaller
than my laptop or desktop computer, works very nicely when I am traveling.

If I want to read for awhile or listen to a podcast, it is also more convenient
to use at night after I have gone to bed.

I could use my phone, but I don't like phone calls interrupting what I am doing
on my mini IPad.

Re: IPhone versess IPad

2018-05-17 Thread Kimber Gardner
I think it really depends on what you are doing. There are still tasks
I find easier to accomplish on a laptop, but I think that is more a
windows vs mac situation.

I use my iPad and my iPhone almost interchangeably except that my
phone is with me all the time and my iPad is not.

I guess that isn't especially helpful. Lol! If you have some specific
tasks in mind I can try to address your questions.

Re: how to get the newsline app on the ipad

2018-05-17 Thread Donna
Hi

If you are reading my emails from your iPad you should be able to tap on the
link that I shared in my previous email to the newsline app. Or try searching
the app store by typing newsline as one word. Also you may need to tap on
iPhone apps while in the app store. There may not be an iPad app. iPhone apps
can be used on iPads. My son has to use his iPad in school so I can’t give
step by step instructions right now.

Re: Seeking tips/tricks for teaching sighted family members use Spotify?

2018-05-17 Thread Kelly Pierce
It sounds like your family members need to spend time learning iOS. It
is icon driven and if they cannot recognize commonly used icons, it
would be difficult to teach them enough to cover their knowledge gaps.
Also, they just need to use the app more. Spotify designed the app to
Apple’s guidelines, which emphasize interface learning through end
user discovery.

I thought as much, mine is not behaving that way. my partners phone is
behaving perfectly, he has a 6+, but my eight is not. I am wondering if there

Re: IPhone versess IPad

2018-05-17 Thread Michael Feir
I have a 2017 referbished iPAD as well as an iPHONE7. Frankly, things are a
lot more frustrating for me on the iPAD. I find myself strongly gravitating
to my iPHONE for pretty much everything other than consuming audio or binge
reading. For instance, it's nice to be able to listen to internet radio
without burning though my iPOD batteries and taking up my iPHONE. That
leaves the iPHONE free for other things. However, if I'm working, or want
to be ready to do other things while listening or reding, I'll use my
iPHONE. Other than easier use of Braille screen input, I can't think of any
advantages to using an iPAD other than the headphone jak.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the layouts of a whole lot of apps
and things are very different as the designers attempt to use the extra
space in the best way for sighted users. It can feel like starting from
square one despite using the exact same apps and operating system as on
your phone. I'm still glad I was able to get the iPAD due to the guide I'm
in the process of writing. I'll be able to pint all this out and give
exaples so my readers will hopefully make a more informed decision. I have
a lot of spacial perceptin issues so that's doubtless a big part of why I
so strongly prefer my iPHONE's smaller size. The smaller size does force
app designers to separate apps into different tabs. The Settings app where
you configure your iOS device is a prime example. The iPAd layout has
everything in a tree format with branches expanding overtop of things when
selected. Everything else still remains on the screen. On the iPHONE, the
instant you double-tap on a setting area, everything else goes away and you
can get right to what you want. When finished, the "back" button gets you
out of where you've drilled down into.

2018-05-17 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
This is why I make heavy use of containers on the iPad, especially in the
settings app. It makes navigating to the item you have chosen much easier.

I mainly use my iPad for reading books. Where it makes a difference to me as
opposed to using my iPhone is when reading Kindle books. There is a noticeable
pause when switching pages, so it doesn't seem as intrusive to me since with
the larger screen, the pauses are less frequent.

All a matter of what works best for the individual.

Sure, it is nice to have all this stuff, but I don’t see any need for an iPad
in my life, I use my iPhone all the time and the argument that I want phone
calls interrupting me or that I want to save my iPhone battery to me at least
don’t make sense.
As for battery I just get a new one put in should it gert to the

spending $500 or more on an Ipad.

RE: iPhone verses iPad

2018-05-17 Thread Merv Keck
Hi,
I teach both iPhone and iPad. Email is absolutely fantastic on the larger
screen. Even with no useable vision. I have helped people who had absolutely no
experience with computers or iDevices learn to use both their iPhone and iPad.
And the larger screen makes some applications very easy to learn. Including the
native mail app. Because it is spread out and there is less of a learning curve
for older adults when learning IOS for the first time.
Some games are also very nice on the larger screen even with no useable vision.
I have seen some amazing things done on the larger amount of real estate.
I can't wait to update my Mini 4 in a month or two to a larger iPad as soon as
it is eligible.

I'd say the only time an iPad has advantages over an iPhone is if you have
enough usable vision to take advantage of the larger screen to either view more

navigate with.

I think it really depends on what you are doing. There are still tasks I find
easier to accomplish on a laptop, but I think that is more a windows vs mac
situation.

I use my iPad and my iPhone almost interchangeably except that my phone is with
me all the time and my iPad is not.

I guess that isn't especially helpful. Lol! If you have some specific tasks in
mind I can try to address your questions.

I updated the app, and it is challenging to say the least. The guide can be
done with voice over, but it is a pain. Hopefully, the bugs will be worked out.

Re: iPhone verses iPad

2018-05-17 Thread Mary Otten
I find your statement that email on the iPad is easier than it is on the phone
fascinating. I despise email on the iPad. I had the original iPad, and I have
an iPad mini. And I never use it for mail unless my phone is totally dead.
Mostly, this is because whenever I open the app, it never puts me in the
message list. It always puts me in a message. I spend a lot of time in the
list, only reading those things that I want to read. The iPad is good for
somethings, but I would really be curious why you think the mail app is so
wonderful on it. My experience has been so opposite. One other thing, and I
don’t think it’s been fixed on the iPad. When you open a message to read it, on
the phone, a two finger flick up gets you only the message text, that is, the
thing you want to read. On the iPad, you get a lot of extra junk before you get
the text. Unless that has recently changed which is possible, because I haven’t
used mail on my iPad mini in a little while.

Dictating new phone contact.

2018-05-17 Thread Carolyn Arnold
I went to contacts and got to add, then to dictation, and it
said enable dictation. What do I do to enable dictation. I
double tapped and tried to find something. My friend said
her phone did not say that.

2018-05-17 Thread Chuck Dean
Direct tv now update is not friendly with voice over.
Hi everyone.
The current direct tv now update makes the guide extremely difficult to
navigate with voice over.
You may want to hold off on updating until the bugs are worked out.
This update does include a cloud DVR with twenty hours of storage free.

RE: IPhone versess IPad

2018-05-17 Thread Alan Lemly
I'd say the only time an iPad has advantages over an iPhone is if you have
enough usable vision to take advantage of the larger screen to either view more
or use greater magnification. Otherwise, I'd say an iPhone is easier to
navigate with.

I think it really depends on what you are doing. There are still tasks I find
easier to accomplish on a laptop, but I think that is more a windows vs mac
situation.

I use my iPad and my iPhone almost interchangeably except that my phone is with

I guess that isn't especially helpful. Lol! If you have some specific tasks in

Re: Direct tv now update is not friendly with voice over.

2018-05-17 Thread Amy Johnson
Though the guid isn't very accessable I have been useing the 15
channels it gives you under watch now which are channels you have
watched recently and if I don't find anything to watch there I go to
discover and to networks and choose a channel I like to see what is
playing on that channel. It is just a work around for not useing the
guide. Hope this helps any of you that have direct tv now. Would be
happy to try to help anyone that may need help learning to navigate
the new updated app.

RE: iPhone verses iPad

2018-05-17 Thread Alan Lemly
Mary,

I'm like you and am curious why a larger screen without usable vision makes the
learning curve any different for the mail app. I've never used an iPad but
others I've spoken with say the larger screen makes things more difficult to
navigate with Voiceover especially when the screen is split in some apps. I
hope Merv will respond with some specifics. I guess if you're learning VO
gestures for the first time and have motor control issues, having a larger
screen on which to swipe might make things easier.

Phone settings for the 8 Plus

2018-05-17 Thread Bill Outman
Hello.

I'm having a couple issues with my new 8 Plus.

When I jiggle or bump it even slightly, the phone speaks, which can be
disconcerting to those around me if I'm in a group of people, such as at
church.

Also, the touch seems very sensitive to the slightest tap, for instance,
when I hit the home button, sometimes the phone opens a program such as
Music, which I am not meaning to open at that time.

What do I need to adjust, and where do I find those settings.

I Tunes 12.7

2018-05-17 Thread cwc
I have upgraded my I Tunes to 12.7. I thought that there was something that
I should watch out for when using it. For example, when restoring the
phone, should I take any extra steps to protect ring tones or other files?
Any help would be appreciated.

Direct tv now update is not friendly with voice over.
Hi everyone.
The current direct tv now update makes the guide extremely difficult to
navigate with voice over.
You may want to hold off on updating until the bugs are worked out.
This update does include a cloud DVR with twenty hours of storage free.

Re: Dictating new phone contact.

2018-05-17 Thread kitty hevener
Hi Carolyn, Just wanted to introduce myself and help you get dictation going.
I am Kitty in cincinnati oh. I have bee using iphone since sept or oct. It
sounds like you are getting the “enable dictation” error because dictation is
not turned on. To enable it, open settings and double tap on general. From
there, swipe or flick right till you come to keyboard. Double tap on it. Move
to the right till u see enable dictation. Double tap on it. Once it has been
enabled, it will stay on till u change the setting. Let me know how it works
for you.

I went to contacts and got to add, then to dictation, and it said enable
dictation. What do I do to enable dictation. I double tapped and tried to find
something. My friend said her phone did not say that.
