[Wikimediaindia-l] WPMBL8 / Translations
Hi all, Wiki meetup Bangalore / WPMBL8 went on well last sunday with good number of people attending it and also had some very good sessions. We also had good media coverage this time.[1][2]. If some of us were impressed by what google guys have shown us on translate[3], here is more news about something which is being worked by one premier institution in the country[4]. It should not be a bunch of politicians that want to be face of Wikipedia to the Indian media without having made any substantial contributions to Wikipedia. Wikimedia India will receive thousands of rupees in donations. We need trusted people who are representative of the pan-India Wikipedia community to handle it. If this is a group of people who are meeting in Bangalore for wining and dining, this should be named Wikimedia Bangalore chapter, not Wikipedia INDIA chapter! *My Few paisas.* As to my understanding after reading the MoA, there are no special privileges to founding members apart from not requiring to apply for membership.[Authors can clarify if my understanding is not right] I suppose there would be an election after the formation and only the elected persons will have additional privileges than a normal member. So in that sense, who starts it really doesn't matter. I dont know why people are cribbing its secret / closed group when meta was up all the while. Did anyone make a point to edit any of the meta pages and was it left undiscussed / discarded? No one stopped anyone from doing that. Trust is not measured in terms of edit count.Showing up on the day and commitment in real world is also required and I guess the people who signed the MoA did that. I agree with pan-India comment but again elections would happen I guess and as i already mentioned founding members dont get any extra privileges. Probably some clause can be added to include regional / linugual EC members.I would add that right away to discussion page. Do they have maps with articles and or pictures on them. How does this process of translation work for the other Indian languages? Is there a plan to translate to English as well ?? Thanks, GerardM-- Hi, Few related points below. 1. As mentioned above by RSrikanth / Sundar, articles for cities / towns were created by GaneshBot based on census data. Most of them are geocoded i guess. Recently http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Kumar_Appaiah_Bot was created to fix coord-missing-articles. Someone can take it up and run regularly to make coord missing articles count to 0. This is very essential and acts as a input to Google maps-Wikipedia layer 2. AFAIK very few Indian articles have a map in the article (Ex:- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Salai Urdu version of Tirumalahttp://ur.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D8%AA%D8%B1%D9%88%D9%BE%D8%AA%DB%8C[I uploaded into English, but then someone seems to have removed from English, but looks like a bot translated before that].).This is where OSM-Wikipedia integration could come very handy.City / Town / even Locality articles can have an free map from OSM.I have seen this being case with quite a few articles related to UK. 3. Wikipedia-OSM has a huge scope with WikiProject Indian Roadshttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WP:INR. I was trying to get some OSM tiles generated and add to articles for it sometime back but dropped it due to lack of time and also thought it would be a redundant effort if the OSM-Wikipedia integration comes through. 4. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coimbatore_Golf_Club has an image of the golf course map from openstreetmap. Great usage of free maps beyond navigation which can only be possible with OSM ! 5. While any little progress helps us, India still has a huge way to go when it comes to OpenGeoData. Awareness of Openstreetmap has to increase and we need atleast some decent data available for India(which is sadly available only for few sq.kms(?) ) before we can actually use OSM data into Indian articles. 6. For folks interested OSM-India community put up this India specific OSM rendering at http://openstreetmap.org.in -- Where else in the world we can metered / unmetered / prepaid autos :P Gerard, I am not clear on what you are referring as a translation work in the context of OSM-Wikipedia. Are you referring to the need of the localized maps OR need of maps of OSM to be on Indic wikis OR localization of OSM tools like Potalach / JOSM. Thanks. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Indian DYK (trivia) from Wikipedia on twitter.
Hi all, We launched this one in #WPMBL17. The twitter account is @DYKIndia. Thanks Sundar for the handle suggestion, this seems short and crisp :) Twitter :- http://twitter.com/DYKIndia GDocs Tweet Queue :- http://j.mp/a4ayc3 Repository :- http://github.com/srikanthlogic/WikipediaDYKTweeter Both of the code and tweet queue are open, and please feel free to contribute to them. We had discussions on topics surrounding this at the meetup and I will summarize them below. 1. This can be on any subject and can be used by many projects like History, Medicine, Countries, etc if there are people to manage the tweet queue. 2. It would make more successful if the manual tweet queue maintenance process is done away with and ask WP:DYK to provide short version of hooks as well going forward. -- Need to go through a proposal i guess. Will be working on this in sometime after gauging the success of this. But counter arguments also came for this and sometimes its better if its manual. 3. Similar app can also used to tweet daily DYKs on a hourly basis and can be face of Whats new on Wikipedia in social media. 4. Possibility of exploring usage of this into Indian languages, challanges like char limit, availability. Need to work on this as well. 5. Possibility of tie-up with mobile operator and making it as a VAS, where in operator gets money, we get outreach / publicity -- Can be taken as a chapter outreach activity once that is formed. Special thanks to twitter mass hero Tinucherian, we already have 88(and counting) followers and from stats i could see 20 have visited the article(best thing about bitly). We need to observe how the stats go, whats the best time to tweet etc. Code has some TODOs yet to make it more generic and comprehensive which i would be working on over next weekend.Python folks feel free to review since its my first python code. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] community, chapter and foundation: who is who and who does what
Achal, Thanks a lot for the detailed clarification. I was wondering how I could clearly differentiate these things and explain to people outside our list/community. I felt the media coverage (some / most) recently after Barry's meet up also did not convey the differences between the Chapter and Foundation office properly. I also felt one other point which Barry told us about motive of foundation office that did not reach well to the media / general public well. Barry mentioned to us the common misconception of press when some global org is setting up office, it brings jobs, money etc which he had come across during the meetups.Sadly the misconception seems to have been carried forward. Random sample (unscientific) of what reached out:- http://www.quoteurl.com/kmh92 . I think we gave out too much to the press to digest at the same time. Information about chapter, office, wikicapital etc. Only few articles I read clearly expressed them as different things and drew the line. My 2 paisa Regards, Srikanth L On Wed, Oct 6, 2010 at 20:35, Achal Prabhala aprabh...@gmail.com wrote: To add to the recent discussion on this list, perhaps a few clarifications are in order. All of you are familiar with yourselves - i.e. us - the community; people who edit, organise and otherwise help Wikimedia projects move ahead in interesting and productive ways. Many of those interesting and productive things happening here are captured in this first edition of the Wikimedia India Community Newsletter: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia_India_Community_Newsletter_2010_September.pdf Then there is the chapter. Chapters are independent organizations founded to support and promote the Wikimedia projects within a specified country. (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_chapters). Chapters are approved by the Chapters Committee, constituted by folks whose mission is to further Wikimedia, and while affiliated to and recognised by the Wikimedia Foundation, are yet independent entities which plot their own course. Chapter efforts in India started up as early as 2004 and critical momentum was achieved from 2008 onwards, the result of which is that we now have an approved Wikimedia India chapter - awaiting registration in India as a non-profit organisation (for more see: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_India). The Wikimedia India chapter is currently being registered as a 'society' in Karnataka and will function as a national organisation. As a 'society' it is required to have founding 'members' - and in our case, those members are Arun (President), Sundar (Secretary), Hari (Treasurer), Gautam, Srinivas and Arjuna. (See: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_India/MoA-PostChapComVer). Once the chapter is recognised as a legal entity within India, these members will serve as the Executive Committee of the organisation. Contrary to earlier discussions, the Wikimedia India chapter has never had 'Directors' or 'Directors (designate)' - it's a society, and societies have members. On operation, it will, of course, extend membership widely to anyone who wishes to join. Chapters have a wide variety of functions, all of which are evolving - for now, a crude summary of their purpose would be that they allow individuals from within the community to do more than they could normally do alone, besides providing the benefits of a formal, organisational setup to utilise when necessary. Then we have the Wikimedia Foundation, the organisation based in San Francisco that is the legal home of all Wikimedia projects. Over the last few years, the Wikimedia Foundation has grown in staff strength and capacity, and works to facilitate everything we do as volunteers from around the world. In the last few months, and on the basis of a strategic planning exercise (http://strategy.wikimedia.org/wiki/Strategy) the Wikimedia Foundation decided to actively help a few geographies grow, one of which is India. The National Country Director job that Barry Newstead (Chief Global Development Officer) talked about on this list ( http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/2010-August/000850.html ) is a position that will report to him, which is to say, the staff employed at the Wikimedia Foundation office in India are exactly that, and not to be confused with the India chapter - they are a separate entity, an off-shoot of the Wikimedia Foundation in San Francisco, though they will obviously be working closely with both the community and the chapter. Further clarifications on the Wikimedia Foundation's office plans in India are available in this email from Barry ( http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikimediaindia-l/2010-August/000849.html ). I trust this helps somewhat in understanding the landscape. Cheers, Achal ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org

[Wikimediaindia-l] Cultural differences with Indian newcomers
Hi all, While we are all working on reaching out to more and more people to join wiki community in India, I see an area we need to focus before it becomes a problem.Few days back there was a thread posting a link to article[1] in which a user claimed Foreigners deleting Wikipedias India content. In the Chennai meetup that happened last week too, there was a person claimed new users are being BITE http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:BITEN by admins among other things which indicated his lack of understanding in wiki policies / guidelines. I just came across another ANI incident[2] involving an Indian editor and 3 admins. Without going to details / commenting on it, am quoting part of this comment about[3] cultural gap that exists from being an Indian editor editing from India in an English Wikipedia dominated by Anglophone people. He needs to know when to persist, when to back off and needs to learn the general etiquette of the Western world There are few common patterns / misconceptions among a set of new Indian editors most of whom never come back to wikipedia. 1. Admins have superpowers, remove content and BITE. 2. Lack of understanding of wiki policies. Neutrality and Copyrights seem to be problem areas.POV Pushing happens quite a lot and there is general lack of awareness about copyright. 3. Then this cultural differences. While the examples are from English wikipedia, these issues might be common to Indic as well as they grow. If we could address these, we could avoid newcomers leaving wikipedia. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time Wikipedia is featured on postal materials. Is that correct? Dedicated philatelists and stamp-collectors among you (and your respective communities) may want to make arrangements to have something postmarked. To: Planning for WP 10th anniversary wiki...@lists.wikimedia.org Hi folks, Earlier today I created a page on ten.wikipedia.org to encourage everyone participating in Wikipedia 10 events to take great pictures and video. http://ten.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organize/Record_our_history I can't over-emphasize how important it is for everyone hosting an event -any event- to make sure you collect great images and video, and of course share those images. Wikipedia 10 is a particularly good time to hone your skills and get in the habit of documenting every single meeting and occasion - and documenting them very well. It's easy to overlook this step with all other planning, but please, please don't. If you're part of a new or established Wikimedia chapter or organization, I absolutely promise you that having very good images on hand will be critical at some point in the future. Whether it's for presentations, media, reports or other documents, or just to archive and document your roots: take pictures! Remember that we're documenting images for future generations, and creating a lasting historical record of the people behind this movement. You are all pioneers! And these images will shape the historic record for future generations. It's also something that we at the Foundation very much benefit from. Whether it's putting your pictures up on the walls, showing them to donors or stakeholders, or just putting a name to a face: these images have incredible value for us. I also know that the chapters and other global pieces of our movement rely on these images to build their own global understanding of our collective work. No event is too small! No event is too big! Ensure someone at your event will focus their efforts on taking the best possible efforts. Please make sure you don't forget to take, post, share, and detail your images. Plan ahead! Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Communication from the Executive Committee regarding first meeting
Hearty congratulations to the newly elected office bearers. Tinu, The MoA Article[1] VII (7) (12) would answer some of your questions related to election of office bearers and to me it seems perfectly within the frame of things. I think the general members get to vote only after the current term ends for this team.(Correct me if am wrong). Well, I do share some of the concerns raised by Tinu on transparency. It is even more ironical how come such a major change was never communicated, especially a thread was running on the mailing on the very same subject of *Chapter* from Jan 30 and no one bothered to update. I feel the role of chapter has probably not reached well among the community [questions around edit counts becoming criteria reflect that] and in such a situation the chapter should communicate more often and more clearly, openly. However these sort of issues would only further widen the gap between chapter and community in the negative direction. While i continue to appreciate the efforts of the folks behind chapter for spending their valuable time, I would request the EC to add communicating to the community in a regular and timely fashion to the code of conduct[Article VII (8)] so that members do spend some time in communicating with the community. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] PDF rendering of Indian language wiki pages
Hi Santhosh, Cool!. Just have some feedback on the generated PDF (Same article ilangai on tamil wikipedia). I see line spacing is not uniform and some characters from adjacent lines overlap, but a slightly more important issue is spacing within the words for certain characters[Am not sure if its a repeatable pattern for a particular charater], but certainly it takes a toll on readability since it gives space with in a word. I am not sure if its a tamil specific issue too. Tested on Windows XP with Firefox where tamil wikipedia reads fine. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Releasing Wikipedia CD – few concerns
On Wed, Mar 2, 2011 at 00:50, Nikhil Sheth nikhil...@gmail.com wrote: Hi All, I had a great time reading the blogpost. Very amusing. But had to clarify some things before we all pick up our pitch-forks and torches, so.. http://nikhilsheth.blogspot.com/2011/03/clarification-about-wfsoe-and-english.html I think you took it a bit personal. Shiju's blogpost IMHO is a good guide especially for Indian languages CD creation project. Giving ZIM format dumps has some adverse effects which was what Shiju tried to share as a best practice. I think they are valid concerns. Let me explain. I think he clearly mentioned about the http://schools-wikipedia.org/ project for English wiki and there is no problem in such approaches. I think the blog post was mainly addressing the impact of giving whole dumps of Indian language wikipedia's, all [except English(Yes, English is also an Indian langugage)] of which are in their early stages. Sometime back i proposed a similar CD creation project on tamil wikipedia and thought given that Santhosh's software is available, we could get a CD in couple of month's time. My timeline was rightfully mocked at by the community, with valid concerns on quality and we have just started collecting articles, which will then be peer reviewed, copy edited etc before we could use the software and create a CD. Along with Shiju's points, I am sharing some important viewpoints(which i learnt from tamil community), why i think the whole exercise of fact checking and releasing is very important instead of just dumping them in the case of Indian language wikipedia's. ** Who had checked the validity of the content provided in the CD? Once the CD is created, the content is frozen for ever. We never know in what ways the content in CD is going to get duplicated. This is very important. Imagine students using it to write answers for exams using this and if there is a factual error and teacher fails to give marks, the students will never ever turn back to Wikipedia again. We are loosing young buds here. While you might say Wikipedia is not reliable for information source, but you can use it, for a school kid, its always binary.Indian language wikipedia's are bound to have more spelling mistakes(since most of us use a non native keyboard / translation and we are human), the error rate will be even higher. Its not just about schools, anyone who is find such errors in a published form(CD is a published form you cant change) will find it annoying and may arrive at a prejudice which we wouldnt want. **How we are going to handle the copyright violation of text and images included in the CD? Can we always point our fingers to WMF? This is very serious issue, its a different thing that we as individuals might not respect copyright because of the climate in India, but as a project Wikipedia holds copyright as one of the 5 pillars(Do I need to tell this list about this, sorry *runs away* :D). **Who will answer the queries related to the explicit images contained in many articles. The inclusion of explicit images, controversial articles, and factual errors in the CD supplied to the school children are not small issues. Not many know, Shiju may be sharing this because malayalam community actually burnt their fingers here. There was a (politically motivated?) article in leading malayalam daily/magazine criticizing the effort regarding inclusion criteria / some factual erroneous information. This may not have been shared widely to avoid multiplication of negative publicity. While at personal level it hurts the people who worked hard for this after spending weeks for the project, at project level it creates a negative publicity / impact for language wikipedia which none of us would want. On the content side as well, Indian wikipedia's arent that great(barring few). The Stub ratio may be high which will give a wrong impression of language wikipedia's to people using the offline ZIM dumps that language wikipedia's will only have templated content stubs. While its good to have stubs online, since they help in improvement of articles, i dont fancy stubs on an offline wikipedia. While giving ZIM format dumps might be useful for people without connectivity, IMHO its definitely not suitable for mass consumption without a bunch of disclaimers (which might not even be understood by well educated) While the intentions may be good, that shouldnt cause a negative impact to the language wikipedia is the bottom line.I hope you understand.(This was probably missing in Shiju's blog post which made you think it was a pointing fingers, but I am sure Shiju's intention was to share his bottom line) Regards Srikanth.L http://srik.me ___ Wikimediaindia-l mailing list Wikimediaindia-l@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimediaindia-l

[Wikimediaindia-l] URL Shortener in Tamil Wikipedia + URLs for Indic Wikipedia
Hi all, Happy to announce that Short URLs are now available in every page of Tamil Wikipedia. Sharing Indic URLs with unicode characters are never fun since one will get an ugly looking URL like http://ta.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E0%AE%B5%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%95%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%95%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%AA%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%AA%E0%AF%80%E0%AE%9F%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%AF%E0%AE%BE:%E0%AE%86%E0%AE%B2%E0%AE%AE%E0%AE%B0%E0%AE%A4%E0%AF%8D%E0%AE%A4%E0%AE%9F%E0%AE%BF . (Forget about twitter, even mails are tough). Now its easier http://tawp.in/r/262 !! The short url is visible on top right of every page, extreme right of the article title. For the technically inclined, the shortening happens by encoding the page id of a mediawiki page to base36 (No database for shorturls here!) and hence doesnt depend on any other server. I would like to thank User:Mountain[1] for the shortify project[2] which powers this. (Gerard, this is already localized in tamil, malayalam :) ). It would be great if this could be extensionized in mediawiki as its a feature must for wiki's running in non latin languages.I would also like to thank YuviPanda for setting this up on his server and doing some customization for Tamil wiki. (YuviPanda is an ubergeek looking to do some serious work for mediawiki in GSoC), Kishore for some quick css help in making this happen. It would be great if this can be supported by Wikimedia itself. Even if the fancy twitter friendly short domain name is not there,if just the redirection part is hosted for all projects on wikimedia servers(existing domain names will do), it will be of great use, especially for non latin languages. I understand Malayalam wikipedia has a redirect mechanism based on the english interwiki title for sometime now.Even we would want to do this, but am thinking if redirects are an optimal, search engine friendly solution or are there better ways of doing it.Can someone please educate me. Also IMHO URLs with transliterated text will help Indic languages. But making them search friendly is a key thing and if we could do this, am sure the readership would bound to increase a few times.(Not everyone knows to type in regional language and many use transliterated text for search and then consume vernacular content). [Wikimediaindia-l] Search Engine Optimization in Indic Wiki
Starting a new thread for SEO On Thu, Mar 31, 2011 at 23:31, Santhosh Thottingal santhosh.thottin...@gmail.com wrote: Srikanth mentioned a valid issue related to search engine optimization with Indian wikis. I dont get any result for this query: Malayalam + Mango to take me to Mango article in Malayalam wiki. Because there is no way a search engine can index the word Mango in english to the Malayalam wiki page of Mango. Having Mango in URL does not help search engines. I know some SEO tricks used by Malayalam news portals to address this. They use Meta tag efficiently and put english and malayalam keywords associated with the article. For eg: a news article about Mullapperiyar Dam will contain a meta tag with keywords മുല്ലപ്പെരിയാര് ഡാം, mullapperiyar dam, Some of the news portals even integrated this trick their news publishing workflow with custom plugins to CMS systems(like Drupal). If we want to get people searching in English to our wiki articles, we can think about a Meta tag solution - some extension that injects keywords to meta tag. Don't we need to point show ml.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kochi if one search for Kochi? atleast within first 10 results? Completely agree with you Santhosh. SEO is as important as outreach (its online outreach after all). Ravi,Sundar, myself were discussing this on a dinner after a meetup. But manually adding Meta tags is an additional overhead on content creators IMHO. If there is some automatic tagging with interwiki english page category etc(Bot idea ?), its worth a try. The advantage of having it as an extension is, ofcourse, that the wikipedia is no longer dependent on code run on a 3rd party server (in this case, tawp.in). [1]: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ShortUrl Now that is *really quick*. It would definitely be useful for not just wikipedia, any non latin mediawiki can use this. There was a request on tamil wikipedia for tamil wikinews as well. I think polishing this and making it available on all non latin wiki will help :) Feedback welcome :) Feedback from mediawiki extn perspective : Options to set the ShortURL to be displayed on client side will help. For instance I could install this on mediawiki server, but for shortname sake I may still want the short domain name to be used (I might use mod_rewrite in the short domain). Also base 36 will not be able to cater larger wiki's like en.wiki. This should be made configurable. Probably the simplest way to display in client side is to add a line to Toolbox page. (This will make it standardized) and also makes it load faster since there wont be an additional js download and will work even when non js browsers. ( #facepalm to me for having spent a long time trying to bring it on right spot on the UI [and still its buggy on FA pages]) Please post to Wikitech-I to get more technical feedback :) P.S. My first ever mediawiki extension. I've verified it works, but testing would be welcome too :) Welcome to Mediawiki. We need more love from geeks like you :) especially for a lot of indic solutions. Thanks much Yuvi. Great work. Looking forward for more hacks. I would post about this in Wikitech list and ask for suggestions / using the extension across Indic / non latin wikimedia projects. Re: [Wikimediaindia-l] Global Fund raising Support to Indian Currency
Aww, bureaucracy! I think 80G is nice to have, but shouldnt stop us. Also we are not probably looking at large scale(We would love if they come), but typically my equivalents to 5 10 20 dollors would 250 500 1000 INR for which most would not take trouble of getting receipts and eventually getting the benefit(Atleast the folks who do online donations) since the tax benefit would be negligible. So my next question is without which are we eligible to collect donations online, would just like to know the bureaucracy around it? I now know the chapter can receive donations through NEFT[1].If we are good to go then the next thing to work out would be a payment gateway / payments partner helping us in giving options to various bank netbanking / credit/debit cards, ofcourse a decent API. The more the merrier. Also if we could get some sponsorship/deal from them in terms of the cut they take for transaction cost. People who have experience with online payment solutions can add their inputs. Infact, we need not go all automatic way, the kind of copying here is very elementary. 1500+ chars without wiki syntax means something suspicious.None of us write paragraphs at one shot. I guess Huggle might already flag those(not sure). I just added watchlist to all course pages[1], so that ambassadors could monitor them and check manually. It will be great if some common template is applied on all talk pages where students edit so we could get one consolidated watchlist with some template. Will work over sometime during next week. On the other hand, if the teachers could monitor individual watch-list for content getting added as and when it will be good. Instead of doing one review at end, spotting diffs would mean lesser rework for students, shorter the duration junk stays(Some of the topics chosen by the program have very few watchers). This set of copyvios were detected very early(majorly ~50 students' edits were monitored and reported), others are not yet on editing mode still. 50 / 1000 is not some, but I would say few. But its key we take this seriously before it explodes to a scale we cant handle since Indian editors / newbies are already infamous for copyvios and we dont want to add more such folks. Apart from copyvios which can be detected since they are from online sources, quite a few students write bookishly (which makes me wonder if they are copying from local texts). I kind of feel(personal opinion) that *deadlines* , *marks* are making quite a few of them to treat this as yet another homework and in turn have the done and dusted attitude.
