Subject: [Zappa-List] If you want the Roxy soundtrack cd, here's a Pre-sale
offer...

Fellow Zappa fans:

If you want the Roxy soundtrack cd, here's a Pre-sale offer,
I will sign up with ZFT to become a distributor if enough of my fellow
Zappalisters reply and commit to buy a copy from me for $25.

I have to admit that I thought it was bad idea when I first read about ZFT's
plan to license distributors for $1000.I still think it's a bit crazy. But
doing the math I realized that a distributor could recover the $1000 fee and
break even by selling about 130 units.

So what do you people think? If we make this happen, we just might see the Roxy
video get released in our life times.

Here's what to do: Send me a reply, saying you want to buy the cd for $25 (that
includes shipping to USA addresses)
If I get enough "votes" before the deadline, I will commit to becoming a
distributor, and follow up with each of you to provide more details.

If you have any questions, please let me know. Thanks for listening,

Andrew

PS- I know some of you are wondering, who is this Andrew guy and why should I
trust him? I didn't just pop up out of no where. I have been a member of this
list for years now and a few of you know me from trades and vines.

Steve,
This is the best compilation ever put together by "just a fan" hahaglad you
kept my artwork too. I really wanted to make them simple. I liked the Memorial
disc theme. I sure didn't think about the amount of black ink it took to print
them all out!! I also had the pic my friend took from 11-11-77 KC that I wanted
to use. Anyway...I love listening to what's on these discs. I hear something
from them every day or so, cause I put them on an Itunes program here at work
and shuffle through my Zappa folder, and it always hits a song or 2 from your
project! Hope you are doing well and everything. I'll be looking for my art
today!

Hello all,

I printed inlay cards for this compilation when I got it way back when but
other than Chris' all-black covers (which are only for discs 4-8), I can't find
any jpegs for them, and not the ones I got, which were screen captures of some
of Bickford's animation.  Does anyone have access to these that could be
uploaded to the files?

I recently rediscovered these discs and love all the rare items.  Thanks again

That would be me.. you're welcome! Glad you're still enjoying it!  :)

Chris - if you can't find the art, let me know. I'm sure I still have it, along

[Zappa-List] looking for vines/various dates

2008-08-28 Thread abxer3p
Two years after my move I have finally been able to get back to looking at my
collection of FZ vines, putting it all together again.  I had a few of Chris
F.'s covers and found many more in the files.  Chris, those are great
-- colorful and nice photos chosen.

In the process I found some dates I must have missed during my time out of
pocket.  I'll list these below, and if anyone has a copy that's waiting to be
passed on, I'm more than happy to kickstart a new vine.

I can handle FLAC and regular audio discs but no DVD-related copies at this
point, sorry.  I'm still doing computer cleanup and upgrades.

I'll put my current trade list in the files, and although many of you will have
these, I can trade or start something else up from my list.

1 Sep 84  Saratoga
11 Nov 77  Kansas City
19 Nov 76  Detroit
24 Oct 76  Boston
Last Rites (looks interesting!)

and pretty much anything that's not on my list.

thanks again, everyone,
Joseph in NV

P.S.  In my list are four Wazoo dates, which if I recall were set to rest by
the official Wazoo release.  Was that all those shows or only certain ones?  If
all then please ignore them -- oops!

Hi Ashley,

Thanks for the suggestion.  I don't really do any downloading or use iTunes,
mostly recording from LP and cassette (saving my collection -- down to 300 or

Hi Joseph,
I believe itunes will do it – click ‘preferences’ in the ‘edit’ menu, go to
the ‘advanced’ tab, then ‘importing’ and set it to WAV – then you can right
click any track and you’ll see the ‘convert selection to WAV’ option…
That would do it, I think?

Looking purely for personal opinions here. What is the cleverest Zappa song?
Pick whatever definition of clever works for you. I'll go first: I choose St.

Re: [Zappa-List] Re: VO: Uncle Meat, Video From Hell & 200 Motels True Story (3 DVD) NTSC

2006-10-14 Thread abxer3p
Hello everybody, long time no see.

I had a major life move in June and am now in Nevada.
I had signed up for this a lng time ago, thought
it was lost. I think this is the first time I've seen
my name on the vine since I don't know when. At one
time I was last on the list due to being a non-DVD
burner (I had hoped that would change, but it hasn't).
I'd rather not hold anyone up, so if someone would be
willing to trade this with me for blanks & postage,
I'd be overjoyed. I'd then remove my name from the
vine to keep it going. If anyone is can help me,
please contact me.

thanks so very much,
Joseph

Hello all --

I've been dormant for a while, and I'm about to make a
move to a suburb of Las Vegas (from Dallas). I'll
move myself to the end of this line. I'm still a
non-burner and would only watch. Maybe I'll be
DVD-capable by then, and with a firm address.

still happy to be a member of this group,

Hello all,

I got this from del yesterday. In the interest of keeping pond-hopping to a
minimum, I will make two copies. One I'll send on to Richard (the Kingsport

[Zappa-List] partial restart necessary

2005-11-09 Thread abxer3p
Hello all,

I upgraded one of my computers from Win98 to XP, and in the process
lost all of my Outlook Express e-mails. My address works fine, and I
can check it online a couple of places, but I have none of the old e-
mails I had saved. I am on a couple of vines (have printouts), and am
trying to monitor things more closely. If I get off track, please
correct me.

thanks for your help,
Joseph in Dallas

  I'm afraid I won't be contributing for a while.
We've just had some  bad news.   On Friday my wife
was diagnosed with a tumour in her neck, she has  been unwell for a
couple of months and has got worse over the past  few weeks. They
now tell us it has spread to her bones.Yesterday she had a mini stroke and
was rushed to hospital, they now  fear it has spread to her
brain.A brain scan will tell us one way or another tomorrow. She is
very sick but still with it, she has a wicked sense of humour  and is
in good spirits. We have been married for nearly thirty years, and she's a
big a Zappa  fan as I am.We were planning to see the Zappa in
Brighton tomorrow night, but as  luck would have it, it was
cancelled. She has looked after me for the past 15 years through my
own  disability and now it is my turn to look after her.We have
four great kids who are being a tower of support to both of us.I don't
think she will see Christmas this year.I have a couple of vines here
that I will endeavour to send out as  soon as I can.Speak to
  you
  soon.Cris

Re: [Zappa-List] vines

2005-10-05 Thread abxer3p

I had a modem go out a couple of weeks ago but was
still able to get out the GTO's to Paul and Das Genie to John K..  I
stopped signing up for vines until I cut down on the confusion.
I am on for one now (Thing-Fish tapes), and would like the Manchester 79 (was
trying to watch the US vine), but still have yet to receive the SNL/Mudd Club
DVD (as a non-burner, I was last on the vine) and the Fillmore 14 Nov
70/Hariburg PA 29 Oct 74 I was in line for.  (If anyone knows the status of
these two, please comment.)  Big personal issues, I understand, but a note
would be nice.

Well, then it looks as if delay is not the issue
here then. But it sure does suck when you wait so long on a vine that you
begin to accept the fact that you might not ever receive it. MITB comes to
mind for me on this one.

  Mr. Skull

Personally
I don’t mind a delay. Especially if the person sends a post to the list
explaining it. It’s the vines that just stop. I really don’t know were all
this has happened. Ok I think I know about a couple of recent ones. I just
know that out of the several vines I’ve started over the last 6 to 12 months
only one or two seem to have completed to the point that someone posts a
message saying they were last. I’ve never even been affected much by
diapering vines because I seldom sign up to receive one. More often it’s
just that I’ve acquired something that I think is more than worth sharing
and so I start one.

Re: [Zappa-List] 3rd March 79 Johanneshovs Isstadion, Stockholm, Sweden

2005-07-13 Thread abxer3p

Hi Richard,

As far as I can tell, this is a vine that never
was.  There is a Brest show from the 19th of the same month, same
year.  The discs I reeived had the right date but are labelled
Johanneshovs.  A few of us got fooled by it, and I have not seen a genuine
Stockholm show with that date offered in the last year or more.  If it
comes up, I'm also interested.

However, the Brest show is still available from me; no
one has taken me up on it yet.

thanks,
Joseph

It's an instrumental, just two acoustic guitars (FZ and ((I
think)) "Bird Legs Youman"). It starts with Frank announcing the songs
  key (F) in a rather exasperated/impatient manner,"e!".It's a
slow number with Frank playing some incredibly beautiful phrasing and
picking until the accompaniest's fingers get entangledin the strings
and Franks asks "Getting tired?" and the other dude says "Uh-uh. My
fingers got stuck.".Anybody know the song title and what recording it's

Re: [Zappa-List] Vine Efficiency (WAS 1970-11-14 early and late LIST)

I know it's slower for those farther down the list, but
I agree with Richard.  It hasn't been more than 2-3 bucks for me to mail
overseas, and it's kind of fun to see something from Poland, Croatia, Sao Paolo,
or the isles arrive.

I agree, splitting makes for confusion searching
and remembering what's due to arrive...They get around faster than they did
IMHO now than they did under the email bidding system. Plus it sort of puts a
virtual wall across the world, it's friendlier when you don't know where
you are sending next..And its only a few dollars more after all! Or are we
only in it for the money? LOL.

Whatever you guys wish, I suppose. But part of the vine system we
employ makes searching for them easier and I feel that splitting them will
make that end more confusing.
Whatever...

I think at this point all we can do is learn
how to things differently in the future.

As a possible model for future vines of this
sort: When I receive the vine, I could burn two (2) sets, and then send
one to the next EU\UK recipient and one to the next US recipient. And we
just send them in the order listed disregarding those not in the country
  the vine is traveling in.
i.e. those in the US disregard all EU\UK
recipients, and those in the latter afore mentioned disregard all US
  recipients.

  MR. SKULL

Well...
I'm not one to complicate things and, tho I can see some of the
efficiencies mentioned in this thread regarding vines crossing the pond,
I think having two branches for every vine will end up complicating the
system. My opinion is that a single vine is easier to track, and easier
to search. I guess I'd rather see single vines where an occasional
shuffling of names occurs (with the agreement of the participants, of
course).
As this vine is already enroute to Europe, it does make a bit of
sense to have it make the rounds a bit there. The vinage as posted
lately is:

Chris US << Bart << mr. skull << Richard-UK
<< Milhouse-US << white rabbitt-US << Nick Ullmann-UK
<< Scott Burnett - US << Joseph-US [EMAIL PROTECTED]
<< Guy-US  [EMAIL PROTECTED] <<

With the vine on it's way to Bart, and if all are amenable, it
could be amended to:

Bart << mr. skull << Richard-UK << Nick
Ullmann-UK << Milhouse-US << white rabbitt-US << Scott
Burnett - US << Joseph-US [EMAIL PROTECTED] << Guy-US
[EMAIL PROTECTED] <<

This is merely a suggestion; it's really something the vine
participants need to decide for themselves...
My 2 cents,
SOFA

[Zappa-List] Pittsburgh confusion

2005-06-13 Thread abxer3p

I received the disc as a mistake.  I was not on a
Pittsburg vine since I too have the early show.  I was going to pass it on
to you, Chris, who could then send it to David, a kind of US strand of the vine
you were both on.  That is, until I saw the subject line said late show and
the disc said early.  I didn't realize both shows were going around.
If it was the late show, I'd take a copy!  :-)

If there is no late show vine going, then this is
probably the disc.  If both are going, then this is an early show vine.
(Thanks for the subject change, SOFA.  I would've done it but I
didn't want to change it if it *was* indeed the late show that the others were
in line for.)

hope that clears up some of it,
Joseph

Okay..is this for the early show or the late show? When I first heard of
this offer, the guy who posted it had the setlists for both shows together,I
wrote him and asked which show it was and I don't recall his reply. I have the
the early show already. So I don't need the early show.So...let me know which
show this is please,if it is the early show you can take me out of the vine
  please.
  Thanks

Hi Christoff,

Wow, I've never seen this cover before. I think there was another site with
something else, but from what I remember, this one's better. United
Mutations has lots, so much to search.

thanks C,
Joseph

2005-01-04 Thread abxer3p

Richard, thanks for the suggestions, and the link to
the LP ripper.  I'll take a look at that.

But as it turns out, I found that the .cda file type
was not selected in the options as accepted.  Having selected that, I was
finally able to rip it as a .wav.  Ah, success!

thanks everyone,
Joseph

Oh, and if you have an audio file of questionable
extension, Audacity will more than likely open it. Then you can turn it
  into a wav.

Hi,

In an attempt to edit out the 2 second gaps in the
31 Mar 79 Munich show, I have copied all of disc one to my hard drive.
However, I cannot copy track one, as my software says it can't copy a .cda
file.  Well then, how do I access this track?  All the others on
disc one are .wav files.

I'm still trying, but if anyone has any helpful

Re: [Zappa-List] question

2005-01-03 Thread abxer3p

Jim, thanks for your advice.  I'm using Nero and
Roxio, and occasionally MusicMatch.  I was able to copy all of
disc two (so now I have all of it but track one on my HD), but track 1
of disc 1 won't rip.  As it is, I really don't have any working CD players
other than my CD-ROMs on my computer.  The track *plays* fine, but won't
copy.  And while I could re-burn the rest of it as it is, the first track,
The Deathless Horsie, is about 12 min and includes the band introductions, so
I'd really like to have it.

mystified,
Joseph

That is very strange indeed. a cda
file is in fact a cd-da marker. In other words if you put a regular music CD
in your PC and explore the disc you should see only cda files. There should be
no wav files on a music CD. The CD-DA (compact disc digital audio) format
can't be supported as such on a hard drive and the cda files are actually just
markers to let your computer know that the disc contains CD-DA. The question
is why would there be wav files on the disc? If you put that disc in a stand
alone player the CD-DA or cda file should be the only one that plays. Unless
your player plays wav and mp3 as some DVD players and car audio players do.
The gaps you have been hearing are probably just there from the application
you use to play wav on the PC. Like if you were playing a group of mp3's. It
could be that if you take the wave files and burn them DAO set for no gap you
might have a good CD. Except for that mysterious track one. It could be ripped
to a wave file though with EAC. Or if your not familiar with EAC some other
ripper like Nero Or Roxio. Just be sure to rip it to wav and not to mp3 to
  maintain full CD quality sound.

Well I downloaded the same clip

quality version that is guaranteed virus free. You can see it here or right
click to download. It's shrunk and compressed to the max and so under 4MB. An
easy download even for a slow dial up conection.

Re: [Zappa-List] VINE POSTPONED FOR 3-31-79

2005-01-01 Thread abxer3p

Hello everyone,

I passed the vine to Scott, but I sent him the vine
discs.
I checked my discs this
evening, which are my copies, not the vine discs, and they have the 2
second gaps also.  That's very strange, because I could *swear* I checked
that out, I always do.  Can't explain that.  I never burn with gaps,
and I've checked some of my other discs, and they don't have them.
I got the vine from _, and so I am
guessing that I burned disc-at-once and missed seeing the gaps.  I'm very
sorry.  The gaps must be on the vine disc.

I agree that this could be avoided, and if I had only
caught the flaw, I would have asked about this problem, and Scott wouldn't have
it too.

I will contact the person I got the vine from.
I'm not sure he sent me copies or the original discs, although they looked like
them.  Not even sure he sarted the vine.

apologies,
Joseph

  Some very good points, Glen.
Before I go thru the trouble of trying to figure out "whodunit", I'll
give a day or so for the person to step up and say "Oops, it was me and I'm
  sorry"...
I have a feeling I know already who the culprit is - as I heard from
another member recently who received a 2 disk vine where the second disk was
not the one that was supposed to go along with that vine. I'm sure this member
means well. But I also know that he is on a couple of other lists, scarfing up
shows like the world is soon to end. And that's cool, until you start
receiving so many shows that you can't keep your vines straight; then it
  becomes a problem for
all...

Re: [Zappa-List] Reoffer

2004-10-22 Thread abxer3p

Thanks, Cris, but I'm not sure about that.  I
thought I got this from Bart (I save my e-mails, but I guess it might be a good
idea to record the 'vine lineage').

Anyhow, I usually survey the disc and compare it with
e-mails and FZ Shows, than make a simple Word document for the show, which I use
for disc sleeves.  Only a few of these have art, usu. from folks on this
list.  I can easily print these out when I pass it on (I have before
but not consistently).  I'll make this a regular practice (just requires
memory) ... maybe not quite the 'mystery discs' that have been floating around,
but hopefully helpful information.  An easy adjustment.  I give
you my word.  :-)

Hi, boys and girls

The mailman brought this afternoon
some nifty packages, containing vines to pass on. I didn´t have time yet
to check it the right way, but a preliminary inspection revealed that
package number one is identified as Nick´s Vinyl Vine Vols. 1 + 2,
containing  CD-R versions of LPs Mothermania and
Chunga´s Revenge, and Nick´s Vinyl Vine Vols. 3 + 4, containing 2 CD-Rs,
one identified as “Aynsley Dunbar” and the other as “Blue
Whale”.

I also got another package, with
2 CD-Rs (a double set) with the sole identification
“24/5/80” without details
of venue, city or country.

If I was better organized, I would
know who sent them (my secretary opened the packages, and gave me only
the CDs) or would have the info missing in 24/5/80´s package.
Unfortunately, I´m not organized (not nowadays, anyway), so would be
grateful if someone could supply the missing info. I´ll copy the CDs
tonight, and revine them.

AND NOW, WITHOUT FURTHER
ADO, LET´S GO
TO THE PART THAT MATTERS.

Thanks to some enlightened souls
that dwell in our midst, I can reoffer the
following:

A 4 (four) disks set (the
aforementioned Nick´s Vinyl Vine Vols 1,2,3 and
  4
  A 2 (two) disk set
  (24/5/80) – nice concert,
  nice soundboard (I think) recording

I probably won´t be able to mail
them before next Monday, but if interested, send me
off-list your name, snail mail address and promise to reoffer it *as it
is* (I mean, copy and pass on the original
master).

Yours,

Roberto

This is the Cucamonga disc I have (the non-rhino
release), although it is missing some stuff.  Some of the missing tracks
were included on MITB (thanks again).

Re: [Zappa-List] 2/25/78 West Germany vine

2004-09-23 Thread abxer3p

Hello all,

I sent this to Milhouse and got it from
Skip.  At first I thought something was wrong with the copy I got, but once
I saw it happened regularly, I thought it was built-in.  I agree, it is
distracting, especially on some more than others.  I did not ask Skip about
it.  I apologize.  I had been lucky to get in on some of the othre
vines, I thought it might be typical to get one with some rough edges.  I'm
not sure of the 'lineage' of this as it was passed along; maybe there is a
solution.

Sorry again, Milhouse.

  Subject: [Zappa-List] 2/25/78 West
  Germany vine

I got this two disc about two weeks ago I think, but I really wanted to
consult the group about a particular matter before spreading this vine any
  farther.

The person who sent me the discs (J. Lonon on the address label, sorry
I've forgotten the e-mail address you post to Z-List from) warned me in
advance that when he recieved the discs, the segues were not continuous on the
first disc. That is, there's maybe 2 seconds (or slightly more on some songs)
missing at the end of each track, as if the discs had at one point been burned
with 2-second gaps between songs which were later edited out by the next
person, resulting in these jarring segues. On my copy, this is only the case
on the first disc, the second one is fine.

So, my question is, did the vine start in this condition? Is *everyone's*
copy like this? Or did something go wrong somewhere along the line. Again, I
don't want to continue distributing the disc if there's an error that
shouldn't be and for my own personal brand of anal quasi-perfectionism, I
really want to know if a non-screwup-having copy is circulating among the
people on the vine before me, so that *I* can listen to the show without being
  irritated by the segues.

So who can help me out on this one?
