The definition is simple and the last year of manufacture that
qualifies is simple to calculate. Any Airstream that was manufactured 25
or more years ago is Vintage.

Here is a simple way to figure out the current year of Vintage. In
the year 2000 all 1975 or older were Vintage. In 2001 all 1976 are and in
2005 all 1980 models will be Vintage. You figure out the odd years.

Run, do not walk to see this:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AirstreamList/files/1965%20Tradewind/

This is fabulous.

When I started to figure out what the inside of my '73 should look like,
I wondered what else was built to serve more or less the same purpose,
and one answer is the cabins of wooden boats.

Leave it to a boat builder to put us all to shame.

Three cheers for Jim Smith.

If you're listening Jim, you have my undying admiration.

I dearly hope I get to see the Silver Albatross and meet you in person
one day.

Huh???

Doc, I just rebuilt my Toyota W59 five-speed, about as modern as you can
get, and the gears definitely slide along the mainshaft to
engage/disengage with the cluster gear. There isn't a dog clutch in the
whole gearbox. If all gears were meshed all the time, the thing would be
locked solid.

Disconnect your driveshaft, take off the top cover of your manual
gearbox, and with a big screwdriver force (for example) your
first/reverse gear and your second/third gear into mesh simultaneously -
doesn't matter which way (the top cover mechanism contains lockouts to
prevent this from happening normally). Mash the clutch pedal and try to
turn the works with the clutch disengaged - it ain't gonna happen. Dont
try running the engine with the gearbox locked up like this of course.

Well, no, not as such, as the trans itself will reach equilibrium at
about 350F regardless of ambient. It's got that nice, cool 220F water
jacket to unload its heat into. At 120F ambient, though, the
equilibrium temperature of the cooling system as a whole is very likely
to be above its overheating point.

You are absolutely, 100 percent right about "can't get too cool." If
you tow, get the biggest rad and trans cooler there is. Overheating is
an engine-killer (particularly with the GM small-block V8's).

Subject: Simple logic or lucky guess?

Hi Airstreamers,

Here's one for those of you who haven't been there, done that --- yet.

The brakes on our Airstream worked fine for the last two months and 2500
miles. Two weeks ago, they didn't work at all after going over a set of
rail road tracks. By the time I had pulled off the highway to check them,
they were working perfectly.

Several days ago, the brakes were working fine until we pulled into a
shopping mall parking lot. Suddenly, no brakes. Again, I checked all the
wire connections. In the process, I touched and moved wires in dozens of
places. None showed any indication of not being exactly as I had intended.
When I got back in the truck and moved the Airstream, we had brakes again.

Based on these two experiences and rightly or wrongly, I decided there was a
transient problem with the ground. That meant I could look for it and check
again and probably check again - and not find the place where the ground was
almost established but neither was it noticeably loose.

Instead of playing cat and mouse, I chose to locate the bundled brake wire
(blue) and ground wire (white) under the Airstream where it fed the junction
box.

After opening the bundle (by cutting it back two inches), I peeled the white
casing down to bare wire (with my leatherman micra), attached another white
wire (from my "stash") to it with a butt connector (everyone carries a box
of those), unraveled enough white wire to reach the support frame for the
water tank, attached a circular connector (a dozen of these last a long
time) to the end of that wire and then, with a self tapping hex head screw
(same ones I used to connect my BAL jacks to the frame) going through the
circular connector, I drilled it into the frame (with my Makita 14.4 volt
portable drill), thereby establishing a new ground (undeniable).

With that, I cable tied the new ground wire in place and wound black tape
around the connections to keep dirt out, put all my tools away and climbed
back into the truck - fully confident of having brakes again.

The brakes have functioned flawlessly since (even going over railroad tracks
and into mall parking lots). Time on task for this job? 15 minutes. And none
of that was wasted trying to find the culprit ground connection.

Was this solution a matter of simple logic or a lucky guess? I think it was
because my high school physics teacher badgered us to find obvious answers
to simple problems even when they looked like complex puzzles.

Of all the Airstream models the Ambassador seems to be the least known ab=
out or owned.
Does any one have an idea as to how many there are?
Most of the people I've met with Airstreams are only familiar with the Ba=

Melissa,

Unless you feel you purchased the trailer way below market value, I would
suggest that what you paid for it would be reasonable amount to insure it
for.

PS, please send messages in plain text.

As far as the insurance folks are concerned, what you paid is all they
need to know. There is no "blue book value" for a nearly thirty year
old rig. By the time they reach that venerability they can range from
priceless to worthless.

Subject: 4x4 vs 2 Wheel

Over many years I've towed many different types and sizes of trailers
with many different tow rigs. The obvious question seems to be "just
what are the needs"?

For myself for many years my Suburban with 2 wheel drive meets my
requirements. It has a limited slip differential, and this makes a world
of difference. When the 40 gallon fuel tank is full and with the tongue
weight of the trailer it has great traction. When solo in snow I place
extra weight in the back. I've gotten into some pretty slick places with
even a trailer hooked on.

One such place was an event in early spring that was held in a large
meadow. Over several days of very hard rain and many vehicles going to &
fro the "roadway" became so thick and slimy with deep muddy goo that
they brought in a four wheel drive tractor to pull vehicles in and out.
In fact the tractor even would get stuck as the operator didn't have
much experience in operating the thing.

When it came time to depart things were a mess! ...................
However with my limited slip 2wd Suburban with Airstream in tow we made
it out under it's own power. We had quite a ways to travel as well.

My wife's car is a late model AWD Subaru Sport Wagon. The traction it
has is fantastic as it's drive system places all torque at the proper
wheels supposedly at all times. (So far so good.) If one wheel starts to
lose traction the computerized braking system will apply brakes to that
wheel so the power will go to the other wheels. So far in 37,000 miles
it has been trouble free. Time will tell for just how long.

Personally I feel that most folks could get by just fine with 2wd and
the less cost and maintainence that go along with. However there are
definately those few that a true 4wd truck is the most appropriate for
their needs. For those that fall in between consider a 2wd with a
limited slip differential. This combo has done very well for me on
several different trucks. On the Suburban at 190,000 miles I've had no
transmission or differential troubles. I do have a good transmission
cooler and change fluids when needed.

All of you, ................ where ever you may be this holiday season,
................ Have a great Christmas & New Years!

Pat

Excellent comments. I, too, get concerned with all the poor &
inexperienced drivers that are out there. Another reason to have a more
that just "adequate" tow rig.

I don't know how many were mfd, but I've seen a number of them at
Top O'Georgia Airstream park.

Hi, Pat:

Thanks for your story. We had a 2WD Suburban w/o limited-slip
diff at the Tulip-Stem Festival last year (2000), and got stuck in the
mud. We now have a 2WD Suburban with limited-slip diff; it's good to know
that we can expect it to work for us.

Gee, I tried to view these pictures of Jim's work, Yahoo wouldn't let me
in without a user name and password... Is there some other way to get
to see them ? Another site like the VAC site ? hint - hint!!!

From the sounds of the description, I am very interested in seeing what
Jim has done. I am out here in boat country (Cape Cod) and am always
looking for ideas to add to my '64 Ambassador...

Happy Holidaze Everyone!!!

If any one out there is keeping score, I can account for one Ambassador
1964 International model twin, pretty much all original still with the
exception
of the furnace and hotwater heater. I have replaced these with Suburban
NT34SP and SW10DE, the original refrigerator was replaced by a previous
owner. I suspect soon I will be replacing the PAR water pump (model 4800)
with a newer 5800, at this point I am waiting for spring to see if the old
pump
is going to survive another winter and run for another season. Also, I have
replaced the old split rims (safety) with Dexter wheels and radial tires.

In the spring, new curtains and possibly some Minwax oil stain, followed
by Watco Danish Oil on the cabinets when the weather warms up. Some
of the wood work is becoming faded lighter than the rest. For example, the
four drawers under the front gaucho, one is about three shades lighter then
the other three...
