Dear Randy,

The solardome I purchased at Inland RV for my '65 fits fine. I haven't yet
figured out just exactly how the twist contraptions are supposed to be
secured to it and relative to that exactly where does the gasket go when it
passes the support twist gismo! I'd love a photo of that if someone can take
one for us. I'm thinking it will attach similar to the metal vent lid in the
rear. How did the factory get that fastened! It's a very awkward scenario I
think.

On the rats and the "Junta" virus...We've cleaned up our share of rat
droppings and so far no fatal illnesses. Perhaps we've become vaccinated by
exposure? I keep telling my Bride that some day she won't have to have a
broom or vacume in her hands! There's no evidence yet that the rats in our
Airstream went up into the skin but they sure were all over the interior.
Several weekends of cleaning and recleaning have done miracles and pretty
much got rid of the vermin smell that pervaded the rig. It was abandoned for
9 years with broken windows and no skylight over the front vent.

Speaking of vacuming...does anyone know what small vacume to buy and keep
with your rig, that will run on 12 volts? Thanks, Stuart and Bonnie.

Hi Stuart,
Got my Astrodome from Inland RV the other day. It was appr. 3/4" too short.
I called and was asked for my number. After several hours got a call from
Andy, the owner. He explained to me the reason the Astrodome didn't fit was
because of the construction of the vent box opening. Said that on a few
early Airstreams they made them a different size. Suggested I take the box
apart. These early odd-sized boxes have seams on all four sides. He
recommended I take it apart and lengthen it to fit the Astrodome. They have
done this procedure several times at their shop. When I got home today and
looked at my vent box I noticed it has seams only on the long sides. As many
of you know, it is attached to the roof with Olympic rivets on the outside.
Not sure what to do at this point. As far as the gasket location, it should
be attached to the Astrodome. The vent openers should be riveted to the
Astrodome as the aluminum Hehr originals were, I believe.

Stuart
Can't help you on the vent.
As for the vacuum you may try the Black and Decker the one for autos.
Small and plugs into the 12 volt.

Brad:

If Andy's Astrodome was already 3/4 inch too short when
you received it, wouldn't lengthening the vent box opening
only aggravate the problem instead of solving it? Wouldn't
lenthening the opening make the Astrodome even more "too
short"?

Hi Fred,
You are correct and I'm dimensionally challenged, I guess. I will have to
shorten the vent box. By shortening the size, may exposed the existing rivet
holes on the roof. I'll need to get up there and take some measurements to
be sure.

Subject: Re: Vent

Stuart & Bonnie,

If they did not change the design of the vent lifters between '60 and '65 I
can help you.

When I replaced my Astrodome it was necessary to drill holes in the new vent
cover so that the hinged end of the lifters could be pop rivited in place.
You want to position the holes so that the lifters will be straight up and
down when mounted, just like the other vents.
The vent lifters also attach to the trailer. Take a look at the lifter. Near
the end you twist, you will see 2 circular indentations made by a drill.
These indentations are what the trailer uses to "grab" the vent lifter. Now
go to an existing vent. You will see two pieces of aluminum going from the
vent opening frame to each vent lifter holding the lifter in place. To
remove the lifter all you have to do is to take a screwdriver and gently pry
one of the aluminum pieces away from the lifter.
The gasket seals the vent cover to the vent opening. If I remember correctly
as it passes by the vent lifters there is a very close fit, but I do not
think that I did anything special to make it work. However I did find that I
needed to place an additional layer of gasket material so that the vent
cover would seal the opening.
If you are using the replacement vent lifters that Inland sells and have the
original vent screen, you may find that in order to hold the vent screen in
place properly you will need a spacer installed on each lifter between the
lifter and the handle used to turn it. I used 3 garden hose washers.

Hope this helps

Brad, before doing any surgery I would highly suggest getting accurate
dimensions of the opening and giving P&S a call, perhaps they have one that
will fit. Their number is 419-638-6261.

Fellow Airstreamers,

Many of you are infected with this virus as judged by the number of
infected e-mails the VACList server is getting, along with my personal

It just started last Sunday, so you may not be aware you are affected.
Please verify you are not at risk - more information on the Symantec

Be assured the VACList messages you receive are virus free. The server

Hi All,

I plan on using a 4.3 cu. ft. 120 volt fridge in my A/S. It draws less than

cold. I hope this works as planned cause I just hate those overpriced

Bob,
It won't work from the inverter, at least not from a practical
standpoint.

You'll be pulling about 20 amps from your 12 volt battery when the
fridge is running. Figure a 50% duty cycle, so that's 240 AH/day. It'd
take maybe 12-14 hours to flatten a pair of Group 27 "RV/Deep Cycle"
batteries.

It's probably worse than that, as inverters aren't 100% efficient, plus
they draw some current even when not supplying any output. It'll take a
decent-sized inverter, probably 600 watts, to start the motor on the
fridge, and that leads to even less efficiency. (max efficiency is at
near full load)

If you get one of those little Honda EU1000i gensets, that would run the
fridge nicely on little fuel, and quiet to boot. Not silent, however.

An alternative is a Norcold 12VDC compressor-style fridge. They're very
efficient; I understand that 4 golf cart batteries will run one for 3 or
4 days. I have no personal experience with them, but have read about 'em
and talked with a neighbor who has one in an older Barth MH.

There's a reason that most everyone uses absorbtion fridges in RVs.

Subject: Re: Suburban Furnaces

I noticed someone said they needed to build a support frame for a new
furnace and I wish to pass along what I did to mount my Suburban.
I too, needed to raise my new furnace and I did this with a plain old
brick.
I just put some 3M liquid electrical tape on the entire surface of both
sides so it would stay in place and put it on the piece of plywood that
held the old furnace. I then mounted the new furnace and attached it with
the supplied screws.
The furnace has not moved whatsoever for several thousand miles.
It was easy and quick and the brick will take the heat.
I do not know if this will work with a Attwood but it is worth a look.
I know I will never buy a Suburban again because mine was shipped without
one of the two clips that hold the front cover on and a call to the
factory resulted in nothing. They refused to send me the fifty cent part
and made out like I had lost it.
The factory Rep ask me what I did with the screw that goes into the clip
like I had lost that too.
I think they didn't like it when I said I had installed the furnace but I
do not care.. I would not let someone else put in something as important
as a gas appliance. I have no trust in anyone's work but mine due to
experience.

Sorry for ranting but maybe this will help someone out there stay warmer
this winter.

Thanks Jim, I did not think about that aspect of the 120 volt units. I
guess I could use a cooler with some ice to hold me over while in route.
Many thanks. Dave Heldreth

Subject: Tongue Jack Block

I've been looking for something to replace the pile of wood blocks that
I put under my tongue jack. I didn't take a close look, but I seem to
remember seeing a number of people who had a neat aluminum-looking cone
thingy under the jack. I looked through a bunch of RV catalogs but
didn't see anything like that. Can anyone help me with this? Thanks.
