[Elecraft] Mail List Guidelines
Eric Thanks for posting that list, being a newer member less than a year had not saw it before. Should I have found it before and been aware it? I may have done one or 2 of those things but will not be doing them again if I can remember to not do so, I am affected with CRS on some days. [Elecraft] Elecraft - Long Messages
My two cents: Filtering works with individual mail delivery, but not so good with the digest format. Simply cutting extra dialog or repetitive content from one's message will go a long way. I don't believe there is a need to include an entire thread in every relative reply. Fellas..just snip it!!! Nabble appears somewhat broken. It rarely sorts messages these days, even with a title which includes something like [K3]. For example, the last 8 K3 posts which were placed in the K3 subdirectory date back to Dec 2, and the last 8 P3 posts date back to Oct 2, with only one in Dec and one in Nov. [Elecraft] [KX3]2M Module
Does anyone know if Elecraft plans to release the 2M module for the KX3 sometime in 2013? I have asked both Eric and Wayne that question on different email threads related to KX3 options, but no response has been received thus far. The 2M option had a lot of weight when I made the decision to buy the KX3 (sold a FT-897D to fund part of the purchased), and I would feel a little disappointed if I have to wait 2 years to enjoy that option. 73 and Best wishes in 2013, Robert-KP4Y __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Yeh . . . It's not broken, Barry, just doing only the limited tasks its code allows. I had a conversation or two with the individual who (formerly and somewhat regularly) sorted things manually. It's still manual. He wanted to know if I could cruft (sic) some autosort code; I replied, with thanks for the implied flattery, that it's always been above my abilities, much more (less?) my paygrade. For example, I have no idea how to construct effective error traps. You may have noticed my experimenting with the list parameters from time. That's how I concluded that there are more ways to access msgs than the present Nabble code can handle well. I go back and delete my posts after an interval, as well. Paranoia, you know, and, yes, I know they're archived *somewhere. If people restrict themselves to Nabble's live-access mode for reading and posting, the problem will probably morph into server inadequacy. It's just another c l i f f (thud) to work around, heh heh. Re: [Elecraft] Long Messages
Most email clients have a filter mechanism where which allows you to put messages into a folder you specify. For instance, I filter on [Elecraft] and all reflector posts go into the Elecraft folder. I can quickly exercise the delete key unless it is something I think is worth keeping. In that case, I could manually move it to a sub-folder if I desired. I find it is easier to handle my email with my Thunderbird email client than to attempt to view it on the web. I only use the web for things I want to dig out of the archives. YMMV Try the filters, they make life more bearable than having everything rolled up in one Inbox. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/28/2012 10:20 AM, Ken G Kopp wrote: I've never found Nabble to be usable... won't use it. As long as we are talking screws I thought I'd mention a situation that occurred last night. While moving my K3 to get at the rear panel I noticed that one of the acorn nuts from one of the fans had fallen off. In checking the rest of them I found them in various stages of looseness. Re: [Elecraft] KX-3 and KPA-500?
The KPA500 here produces 13-14 dB gain on most bands. 13 dB is a factor of 20, so 10 watts from the KX3 results in about 200 watts out to the antenna system. Re: [Elecraft] Problem with a K3 screw
Be careful with locktight. It v-e-r-y s-l-o-w-l-y dissolves many plastics. Some years ago I applied some to a screw securing a plastic part and over the next six months the plastic gradually disintegrated starting from the point where I applied the Locktight. ! I now consider it for use ONLY on metal parts. Instead I borrow a trick from my post WWII aircraft service days: paint. A drop of fingernail polish between the nut what it tightens against works very well. If you don't want it visible, paint the threads with some and then put the nut on over it, or paint the face of the nut that presses against the fan with black fingernail polish (a common color nowadays :-) and screw it in place before it dries. It's not so strong that you can't remove the nut, but it should prevent loosening due to fan vibration. And then there's always lock washers. 73, Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of P.J.Hicks Sent: Friday, December 28, 2012 9:19 AM To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: [Elecraft] Problem with a K3 screw As long as we are talking screws I thought I'd mention a situation that occurred last night. I have not measured the accuracy of the clock but I expect it to lose time. And, I never refer to it, never use it. I have a big wall clock that above the K3 that tells me the time (actually, it does not tell me the time, I have to look at it) but it loses a good minute or two per week. I let it get as much as several minutes in error before I bother to correct it. My watch is pretty good though. Re: [Elecraft] K? for remote rx only
David, My XYL and I have been away, so my apology for being slow to make a comment. If your remote Beverages are to be used on 160m, 80m and 40m, and a remote TRF is used on each band to provide selectivity and gain, then unless their outputs are combined before up-conversion then obviously you would require a home-to-remote site link to band-switch the TRFs. Of course I have no idea as to the level of BC signal(s) etc your Beverages would present to the TRFs, but as you know the size and mix of all Iron/ Ferrite cores used in the system (including the combiner's) must be chosen with care to prevent Core Generated IMD becoming a problem. Another difficulty which might arise in an up-conversion scheme is the generation of intermodulation products, either by the up-converting mixer or by any subsequent stage. This makes me wonder whether it would be better to run the 160m, 80m and 40m TRFs continuously, and view their combined outputs as Baseband. Then use this Baseband signal to Angle Modulate (FM or PM) the microwave transmitter at the remote site. At the home site the recovered baseband from a FM/PM receiver would be the 160m, 80m and 40m bands. Of course a home-to-remote link would not be required. Here I must put my hand up, because it has been a -long- time since I designed any microwave kit, and I cannot recall if a Baseband extending to 7.2 MHz is feasible. Best wishes to you, David, to all on the List, and to everbody at Elecraft for the New Year when it comes!! 73, Geoff LX2AO On December 22, 2012 at 2:40 PM, David Cutter wrote: I want to place Beverages at remote sites (for rx only), for 160m (useable on 80 and 40m), but it's not viable to use a K0 at each site. Is there a way to use a simpler system: perhaps a TRF on each band, up-converted to, say, 2.3/2.4GHz then down-converted to each band for my K3 at home. The transmit antenna will be at home and listen in diversity mode. I can see various issues like image and sensitivity cropping up, but I just wonder if this has be done. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Clock loses time
I only vaguely remember how to find the clock display on my K3, just did, and it is about 1 year and a week off. I don't remember when I last set it. Likewise with the clock in the K2. I never look at them. I'm currently building a 40-station irrigation controller for my Kamikaze Gardener wife [replaces 6 aging timers in the basement] using a pair of Microchip PICs and the Hamstack components. The C Library includes Unix-like timekeeping off the CPU clock. It is remarkably accurate [fast by about a second/week], but the library has an adjustment function in parts/10E-8. With that, I've gotten it to stay with WWV to within a second over 5 months or so. I suppose something like that could be built into the K3/K3 Utility, but I really doubt very many people use the clock. There have to be higher priority items on Wayne's K3 to-do list ... including displaying the K3 output power I can expect when I first tap the paddles after switching the KPA500 between STBY and OPER ... I hope. :-) My not-terribly-expensive Casio analog/digital watch that I used when traveling for my employer [does multiple time zones] needs to be set whenever it needs a new battery. Other than that, it's within a second or two of WWV all the time. 73, Fred K6DGW - Northern California Contest Club - CU in the 2013 Cal QSO Party 5-6 Oct 2013 - www.cqp.org On 12/28/2012 12:00 PM, Phil Hystad wrote: I have not measured the accuracy of the clock but I expect it to lose time. I just got my long awaited KAT500 kit today. The thermal pad for R6, figure 12, is missing. I checked and re-checked all packed areas, it is not there. Can I proceed to assemble without it or use something else in its place? I really would like to get it working today if possible and not have to wait till mid next week. I also did not have the thermal pad in my KAT500 kit I received about two months ago. And, I have heard that a number of others were missing the thermal pad. I think that the thermal pad person had a particularly bad day or something like that. When I built my KAT500 and did the inventory to discover the thermal pad missing, I sent an e-mail to pa...@elecraft.com and a few days later received the thermal pad in the mail. I did not wait on my KAT500 build but did wait after I got to that point in the assembly where the thermal pad was applied to R6. Re: [Elecraft] Problem with a K3 screw
I have used teflon tape (type for plumbing) for this. It is thin so a few turns around a screw don't put much pressure on small parts but, even though it is slippery, it fills in microscopic imperfections so parts don't loosen by vibration. Re: [Elecraft] Missing thermal pad in KAT500 kit
After I posted several queries about the same thing, I got an email back from Wayne concerning that thermal pad. It seems it's not really needed unless the KAT500 is going to be used in an extremely high heat envrionment. Wayne said something about the middle of summer in Death Valley. Mine was missing, and I'm no longer concerned about it. The KAT500 has been runnining under heavy CW and RTTY use for over a month and a half now with no adverse effects. The metal to metal contact between the tab on the resistor and the bottom cover appears to be completely sufficient to dissipate the necessary amount of heat. I use it to make sure I've got the right UTC -- local time offset. My iPhone also knows UTC. Oh, and RUMlog also knows UTC. I probably don't use it more than two or three times a year. I set it to my computer's time every time I run the K3 utility, which is at least every time I hear on this list of a new version of the firmware. It is usually off by 20 seconds or so, which is plenty accurate enough to check the UTC offset. :-) On the other hand, my computer uses network time protocol and has been spot on every time I've listened to WWV. Rick, Apply some pressure between the board and the front panel metalwork - Squeeze with thumb and fingers while tightening the knurled nut with the other hand. Tighten until the washer is tight. That method will do no harm. 73, Don W3FPR On 12/28/2012 5:51 PM, Rich wrote: Hi all I had nearly finished assembly when I picked up the unit and heard a rattle, process of elimination I found it in the front head unit and its the flat washer between the phones socket and the front panel plate itself. Fingernail polish smells like acetone, don't know about LockTite. Acetone and some plastics make a fairly big and unwelcome mess. Re: [Elecraft] Problem with a K3 screw
Fingernail polish uses acetone which, of course, will soften *some* plastics, but unlike the solvent in Loctite, acetone evaporates completely and the end result is quick-drying, chemically stable coating. Of course there is always Glyptal which uses xylene for its solvent. That, too, will soften some plastics. But it, too, dries to a chemically stable state, unlike Loctite. I don't know what Loctite uses. 73 Ron AC7AC -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Phil Kane Sent: Friday, December 28, 2012 3:42 PM To: Elecraft Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Problem with a K3 screw On 12/28/2012 11:08 AM, Ron D'Eau Claire wrote: Instead I borrow a trick from my post WWII aircraft service days: paint. How much and what type of solvent does the fingernail polish carry as compared to LockTite? My preferred solution is to use nylon-insert stop nuts, which I learned about when I worked at the Douglas Airplane Works for a brief time. The local ACE Hardware outlet carries them in all sizes. 73 de K2ASP - Phil Kane Elecraft K2/100 s/n 5402 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

I tried that first. In my case it resulted in what I considered an unacceptable deformation of the front panel. Maybe I just had a bad stackup of tolerances. I remember having the same problem when I built my K3 about four years ago. [Elecraft] [P3] Utility on a Mac
I am a new Mac user and have run into an issue. I downloaded and installed the P3 Utility. When it installed, I dragged it to my Applications folder. At first, it worked fine. Now, when I click on it, I get the following message: ERROR: The HELP folder must be in the same location as the KX3 Utility app. Yep, you read that right. I get the same error when I click on the KX3 Utility. If I go to System - Library and search for P3, I can find the app and double-click it. It runs fine. However, if I take the app that runs find and drag it to my Applications folder, I get the same message as above. I am still getting used to how OS X works and getting frustrated at times. Thanks for the help. 73, Joel - W4JBB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] [P3] Utility on a Mac
Joel; With just a few exceptions (mostly Apple Apps), Mac apps do not have to be directly in the Applications folder. The solution to your problem is to put the entire folder containing the P3 Utility into the Applications folder. I actually have all my Elecraft Utilities in a single folder inside the Applications folder, each in its own folder inside one named Ham Apps. That should separate the applications enough so that you do not get that problem. Mac OS X is a great OS. Welcome! Re: [Elecraft] [K3] clock loses time
I use it constantly to make sure I figure the utc hour correctly for paper log entries. It loses time. I just set it forward and put it a couple minutes ahead. I think I adjust it every few months, maybe even six months. Not a issue for me. I had to think a minute how to change the minutes so apparently I'm not doing it often. 73 Mike R Play me some fiddle, but no stinkin' violin! Re: [Elecraft] [P3] Utility on a Mac - Solved
Thanks for the help, this has been solved. The solution is that you must copy over the entire folder (from Downloads to Applications). Once I did that, it worked fine.
