Re: [Elecraft] APF Results at an Old Timer's shack
I don't see this as something that would be left on ALL the time. Only used as needed. It does help make an otherwise unworkable station readable for a contact. Just another tool in the box. When you don't need it, turn it off. I have not tried this yet but you can probably turn it off with a CAT command in the appropriate logger macro in the same way you CLEAR RIT. Two things to check Mark. 1. Is CWT on? It needs to be on and the threshold set so that you see the marker centered in the tuning area. 2. Re: [Elecraft] DXLab Commander K3 user-defined controls sliders
Hi Jim. I've been using DXLabs as my main logging program with the K3 for some time now. For me, it is the best and most flexible availablemainly for the rig control capabilities that you mention. But also for the Elecraft type support that Dave provides. He is very fast to respond to questions and is always a huge help if needed. I do use N1MM for contesting and then I just import those QSOs into DXLabs. I also take advantage of the Launcher that allows you to start programs along with user definable delays before any of the suites modules load. I use this for LPBridge, SO2RBox program, SkimmerServer...etc. The only thing I have not been able to get it to start correctly is Wintelnet. It will Start the program OK but in the short cut I have it launch the ini file using -start. But I cannot get the launcher to start that. Everything else runs fine. - 73, Greg - AB7R Whidbey Island WA NA-065 On Thu Oct 21 6:34 , Jim McDonald sent: I uploaded my DXLab Commander user-defined controls and sliders (just AF and RF gain so far) for the K3 to the DXLab Yahoo Files folder: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dxlab/files/Command%20Sequences%20%26%20Slider s/Elecraft/ . Though the K3 has the capability of using front panel keys for macros, the DXLab Commander rig control program sequences (macros) can be longer and don't use the radio's buttons. I am using those I uploaded though they can serve as examples that can be adapted to other applications. One simply switches VOX on and off instead of using the press and hold key on the radio. Another mutes the AF gain. I have two more complicated ones that switch between a front-panel mic and a rear-panel mic, changing the TX EQ, mic gain, compression, and VOX gain. In my files, the rear-panel mic is a Heil HC-4, and the two front panel mics are my old Shure 444D and a Heil PR-781 set up for non-pileup use (ragchewing but not ESSB). The settings I'm using are for my voice, so you'd need to adjust them for your preferences. I used the help documentation at http://www.dxlabsuite.com/commander/Help/CommandSequences.htm , the K3 Programmer's Reference Manual, and the K3 Utility Program help file to understand how to set them up. Since I'm posting this to two reflectors, the DXLab Suite site is http://www.dxlabsuite.com/. You can simply download the files into the Commander\Sequences or Commander\Sliders folder and load them, editing them to customize them for your use. Re: [Elecraft] {k3} PSK31 tuning
One thing that is important to remember is to make sure the threshold setting is set so that the signal indicator on the CWT meter is set to beat with the signal. If you have it set for copying moderately strong signals and you try to copy a weak one you may need to adjust the threshold a bit. - 73, Greg - AB7R Whidbey Island WA NA-065 On Thu Aug 12 12:04 , Dennis KB7ST sent: Ron, I share the same challenges with PSK and RTTY decoding. My baseline is to operate my K3 while RV camping and to explore as much as I can without using a computer. I don't have full answers and folks like Lyle have been most helpful. I was last on HF 25 years ago so my K3, SN 4335, is pretty new. I think my challenge has been to better identify some aids to help in the tuning. See http://www.netdave.com/wa0ttn/Tuning.asp but note he demonstrates some concepts using a PC and I still want to tackle while camping. As a work in progress, here are some things I've noticed and some questions for the group. WA0TTN article above mentions to keep the PSK31 signal in the center of the most sensitive audio region of your receiver. I have 8-pole 2.8 and 8-pole 400 Hz filters but still uncertain where the most sensitive audio region of the K3 is. The tactics I'm using right now is that I set one VFO on data mode and the other VFO mode on CW, using 440 Hz (the A above C on the musical scale--the 'perfect pitch' A. It isn't clear to me yet, despite some poking around on the net what two frequencies are used for PSK signaling. I'm assuming that if I knew the 2 freqs then I could pick a center freq and use some PITCH setting in CW mode to get me close? For example, one of the PSK macros submitted by Matt, W6NIA, in the K3 Utility Command Tester Help file shifts the IF center freq to 1100 Hz and changes filter bandwidth to 1800 Hz. But there isn't explanation of why those numbers were chosen and I haven't tried IF shifting before. In other words, when I can't get a quick decode using the recommended techniques, what can I do in CW mode to 'get me in the ballpark. I do notice that I can decode much weaker PSK signals than RTTY signals -- and that is still a challenge for me (have some disabilities). Within the last day or two, it occurred to me that I should tune into the W1AW data transmissions 14.095 at 3PM and 6PM Pacific time. Then I assume that once I get a solid decode, I could switch into CW or some other mode to compare what the audio should sound like. It would be neat to pick a certain CW pitch freq then SPOT it in CW mode to get me closer. SPOT in PSK mode sometimes works and sometimes doesn't, but without a computer I can't analyze why it works or why it doesn't work. I haven't run into too much QRM as an issue and SPOT PSK mode certainly works pretty good on strong signals. SPOT CW mode on actual CW signals pretty much is nearly 100% in matching whatever PITCH tone I select. But, as the more experienced folks say, the SPOT PSK technique doesn't get a PSK decode with the same reliability as SPOT CW when actually doing CW QSOs. I'll be following this thread most carefully. Re: [Elecraft] Let's Try This Again -- was '[K3] ... A 750 Hz, 8-Pole ... Filter?'
Not really. Remember that these are roofing filters and their job is to reduce the amount of signal that the DSP has to deal with. The ultimate selectivity is based on the IF/AF DSP. Also review the manual about the dual context feature. This gives you a center narrow filter and a wider one with reduced sensativity to alloy you to hear those who are calling a bit off freq but not so much as to hinder someone you are working on frequency. - 73, Greg - AB7R Whidbey Island WA NA-065 On Wed Jul 14 8:30 , John King sent: As another data point in this discussion... I operate 100% CW with my K3, which is equipped with 200, 500, 1000, and 2.7KHz filters. During FD 2010 I made 400+ CW QSO's during my two 4 hour operating shifts. The great majority of that operating time was spent with the DSP bandwidth at 600-700 Hz (and the 1KHz crystal filter.) Only once, when digging out a weak one, did I narrow the bandwidth tight enough to engage the 200Hz crystal filter. FD may not be the ultimate contest environment test, but it's busy. Calling stations are often pretty far off zero beat in FD, so one needs a fairly wide bandwidth to hear many of them. The 1KHz crystal filter combined with the K3 DSP did a swimmingly good job this year and in FD's 09 and 08. Would a 750 Hz crystal filter be better? I controled it using LPBridge and it worked fine. Click on the freq and the K3 freq changes, but not the mode. You can also send the spots to other loggers like N1MM. The goldline mic works great on the K3. If you are going to use it on the FP connection you will need the kenwood heil adapter or roll your own. If using the RP mic connector you can just terminate using a 3.5mm stereo plug with mic+ on the tip and mic- on the sleeve. Re: [Elecraft] PSK31-D Question!
Hello Kurt, PSK-D mode is only meant for PSK keying direct from the CW paddles input. FSK-D works the same way. You can operate both modes from paddle input with no computer intervention. Where FSK-D and PSK-D differ however are in their use with computer digital mode programs. The K3 can be keyed in FSK mode using pins 1 and 5 on the ACC connector. However PSK-D has no such keying lines. Anytime you are connected to a computer and want to run PSK you should have the radio in Data-A mode. This automatically disables CMP to help keep a clean signal. Then using your soundcard output and the Line-In gain on the K3 adjust your settings to get 4-5 bars of ALC and you should be set. Hope this helps. - 73, Greg - AB7R Whidbey Island WA NA-065 On Wed Mar 24 11:49 , Kurt Wiksten sent: Hi I am using Logger32 and N1MM logging programs with my K3. Re: [Elecraft] Noise reduction setting suggestion for CW
Thanks for the explanation Lyle...that's exactly right. Though I hesitated to use the term, it actually acts like an APF for CW...at least with my settings it does. Pitch is set at 550 Hz and using DSP 5-2 and the context filter on. - 73, Greg - AB7R Whidbey Island WA NA-065 On Sun Nov 29 21:07 , Lyle Johnson sent: I remember reading a comment from Lyle on the reflector. He said that the first four NR selections are optimized for CW and the last 4 are optimized for SSB. This happened a few months ago when 5 through 8 were added. The primary reason for this is that the delay through the denoiser filter is not deterministic. Selections 5-8 do a wet and dry mix of processed and unprocessed audio. This can result in scalloping of the signal amplitude, so the user's CW pitch may end up being emphasized -- or severely attenuated -- depending on the pitch, mixing setting, and the amount of noise being suppressed. It may well be that Greg's preferred pitch is one that gets mildly emphasized through this action with the setting he uses. 73, Lyle KK7P __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net','','','')Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] Mode memory by band
Im not sure but If I understand the problem correctly when using MM to change to another band that would have a diff sideband the sequence being executed is: Start on 20M Click on the 40M button in MM sets mode to LSB sets freq to 7.xxx I think this is setting the mode on 20M to LSB. So when you return to 20M it is not on USB. As Joe Subich pointed out, if the sequence were changed to: Click on 40M button in MM sets freq to 7.xxx set mode to LSB this would not effect the mode on the band you are leaving, only the band you are changing to. I have not evaluated this to see the results of the current setup, but there have been a couple reports so I suspect the problem is real and should be corrected. - 73, Greg - AB7R Whidbey Island WA NA-065 On Tue Nov 24 9:58 , Lyle Johnson sent: -- how can we change from LSB to USB when it's wrong? Re: [Elecraft] K3 switch macro update
Very true. But just exiting split your modes will already be the same from your previous macro execution. The only thing potentially lacking would be the equalization of the VFOs. But that does not really matter unless you are going to go into split again. And if you are, you will probably use your macro again which will set it all up for you anyway. Then look at the K3 programmer's reference guide available for download on the elecraft website. Look toward the end of the manual where it talks about Switch commands. I think Ted is referring to the low freq rolloff for TX. The Orion has a menu item that allows the user to set the low end and high end for TX. The K3 has an ESSB menu item if this is what you are looking for. It does require the use of the 6kHz AM filter. However other than adjusting the TX EQ you cannot set the lower and upper limits. Re: [Elecraft] K# and data modes
In AFSK the K3 is already reading the mark frequency just as in FSK. If you work someone in FSK and then chance to AFSK you should still be on the same freq. This is because even in AFSK the radio is using the pitch combination so that you still have the dual peak filter available. In AFSK you still need to make sure the K3 is using the same pitch tones as the soundcard software. If the software is set for 2125 and the K3 pitch AFSK is set for 915 you are not going to see very much output. This is one of the more common issues when someone is having a problem with AFSK. - 73, Greg - AB7R Whidbey Island WA NA-065 On Thu Oct 1 11:55 , Julian, G4ILO sent: Mike-39 wrote: Hi Julian - Direct keying = FSK Audio keying = ASFK See http://www.aa5au.com/gettingstarted/rtty_start_intro.htm for some pro/con arguments re: RTTY. I've always used FSK, so it's my preference not to change. I also don't want to deal with the offset between SSB and FSK. Or does the K3 deal with that internally? I'm not too sure about the PSK31 scheme either. I took a look at that article, and it seems to me that the K3 negates all the arguments it raises against using AFSK. The K3 has a dedicated data mode so you don't need to worry about disabling compression and switching the audio source, that's done automatically, and it does let you use narrow filters on receive. Furthermore it's very easy to set up the audio drive level so you would have to try very hard to overdrive the TX and produce a distorted signal. I'm not sure what you mean about the offset between SSB and FSK. Re: [Elecraft] K3: DVR open ground problem

It worked fine while testing just after installation and configuring. I used the DVR a few times for contesting, but not much recently. I noticed recently that any recording I make has the hum of an open mic (ground or shield?) superimposed on the voice signal. Seems like there might be a bad connection, but looking at the schematic this makes no sense - to have this problem with the DVR only. The audio straight from the mic should have this problem as well. The mic audio is fine though. Anyone have experience with a problem like this? I will do the usual - uninstalling, re-installing (reseating the connector), but since the mic signal at the connector is digital I don't think this will help. Re: [Elecraft] CW BW [was K3 CW Auto Spot in 3.30 with NR turned on]
At times, depending on the signal, you may need to adjust the threshold setting in text decode so that the tuning indicator is flashing in tune with the CW being received. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Shift
Hi Ken. You can save two unique filter setups using the NORM knob. 1. First, hold NORM to clear any shift to give you a good starting point. 2. Now set desired WIDTH and SHIFT the FC to where you want it. 3. Now do a LONG HOLD of the NORM knob till you see SAVE. Rotate the knob while you have it pressed to the left to save your custome filter to setting 1. 4. Do the same process and rotate to the knob to the RIGHT to save setting 2. I do this for SSTV and PSK. Its a quick and easy way to recall a custome filter for digital modes. Also, If you use DXLabs (and I believe others can do this as well but its very easy in DXL) you can enter CAT commands by mode. So when I use WinWarbler and select PSK it automatically sets the shift and the BW, and power output to what I want. No need to go to the radio to make any changes. It just happens. Re: [Elecraft] KRX3 ANT input flexibility
Hi Ken! How about this option. TMP cable from KRX3 to a BNC on the back of the radio (Use the hole for the external ref). Connect this to the common position of an external two- position switch. Then run a TMP cable from the KAT3 where the subRX connects to the BNC for the AUX RF. Connect this to one of the two positions on the switch. Now connect your 6M Omni receive antenna to the second input. Now you can switch between the unused KAT3 input and the Omni antenna you would nomally keep connected to the AUX RF input without having to remove the cover. Better yet...you can get an automatic switch and use one of the DIGOUT lines to do the switching when 6M is selected. I will probably do something similar. I also use an array solutions sixpack switch. ANT1 feeds one side and ANT2 feeds the other. This way I can select any of my antennas for either antenna input. I keep the Main antenna set to auto switch with the KRC2 and the ANT2 position I manually switch to I can try different combinations. - 73, Greg - AB7R Whidbey Island WA NA-065 On Fri Jun 19 8:04 , 'Ken Kopp' k...@rfwave.net sent: I purchased the KRX3 to monitor 6M while the radio is in use on other bands I connect a 6M omni antenna to the KRX3 and use the KAT3's #2 antenna to feed a 6M array when the K3 is switched to 6M. The resulting diversity receive -is- impressive! The as-designed choices to select what antenna is routed to the KRX3 is limited (IMHO) and here's my method of achieving more flexibility in using the KRX3: The BNC(F) to TMP(M) cable is installed in the normal manner and is routed to the area atop the rear of the KRX3. The cable from the KAT3 tuner is also routed to the same area. I've made a short TMP(M) to TMP(F) extension cable to run from the KRX3's TMP(F) input connector to the same area atop the KRX3. This allows me maximum flexibility in what source is fed to the KRX3's antenna input by just removing the K3's top cover and swapping connections to suit my need. The board-mounted TMP(F) jacks are somewhat fragile and if one attempts to sneak the extension cable into the KRX3's jack from above and the shell will likely be expanded, resulting in a loose fit. To keep stress on the jack to a minimum, I secure the extension cable to the knurled nut on the top of the KRX3. It's -much- easier to make the connection to the KRX3 input jack if the KIO3 panel is removed to allow easy access to the rear of the KRX3. 73! Re: [Elecraft] K3 Noise Reduction
Hi Stephen. I'm surprised with your NB comment regarding electric fences. I have one for my horses and on 40M and up it does a great job with the pulses. below that they are still there though much reduced. Are you trying a combination of the DSP and the IF NBs? Is your pulse generator well grounded? - 73, Greg - AB7R Whidbey Island WA NA-065 On Mon Apr 27 13:57 , Stephen Prior sent: I agree, I have used my K3 for almost a year now and I don't recall one situation where the NR was more effective than the filtering between my ears, whether on ssb or cw. As much as I have and continue to enjoy the radio, I must say much the same about the NB performance. It was very enlightening to hook up my FT-817 to the main station antenna the other night and find that the 817's noise blanker did a far better job than the K3's in getting rid of the interference from the electric fence which keeps the foxes away from our chickens! I don't have any DSP on my K2 so I can draw no comparison there. On a really positive note, the one thing which makes the K3 so special to listen to (on headphones at least) is the AFX. I would not want to be without it. And in all other respects the K3 is a very fine radio indeed. 73 Stephen G4SJP K3 #980 On 27/04/2009 21:43, WA6L w...@arrl.net wrote: Hi, Roy, As I approach a year's ownership of the K3, I have to say that there are very few times that I find the NR capability to be useful. On a very noisy band and with reasonably wide bandwidths ( 800 Hz) the NR can work well, but never without pressing the Level button and optimizing the setting each time. When I compare the K3's NR with my K2's, the K2 seems far superior to me. It may be because the K2 does its DSP at the audio instead of the IF, or it may be that the K2 implements longer FIR filters. Whatever the reason, the K2's noise reduction works much better and in my shack is left on almost all the time. Both the K3 manual and the Wikipedia explanation of the K3 noise reduction recommend using NR only with a wide bandwidth, and imply that it is not as effective on SSB as it is on CW. I concur with these recommendations, but I have to say that I agree with you. The NR implementation could have been done much better. 73, John Roy Morris-6 wrote: When I turn on NR the audio noise level goes down. When a SSB signal is received the audio peaks. I have my RX EQ set flat. In these peaks there are resonances in my internal speaker (if I use it) as well as my two external speakers that plainly makes noise reduction unpleasant. It can be minimally tolerated at F-1-1 level with speakers. It is somewhat more tolerable with a good headset. Part of the problem may be in speaker response, but I also think a big part of the problem is in the noise reduction algorythms. If noise reduction is not recommended with reduced bandwidth in CW, and unpleasant artifacts occur in SSB; then I find NR to be useless. I hope the discussion of white noise and pink noise will lead to something that will improve the noise reduction function in the K3. The prosign IM (| on a computer keyboard above \ or in CW di-di-dah-dah) was originally added for RTTY memories to truncate the 4 second RTTY diddle at the end of messages. Here are some questions that I hope someone can help me with: 1) I do not have KXV3 installed. I have one tribander connected to ANT1. Having tuned main RX on 20 using ANT1 I am trying to set SUB RX on 15m using the same antenna. Firmware does not allow that. It says USE AUX. Is that how it meant to be? I thought there is internal splitter (which I can use successfully when using both RX on the same band) and therefore I should be able to use the same antenna when MAIN and SUB are on the different bands. It now looks like one more relay would be proper in antenna switching arrangement. I wish I could choose any mix of ant/rx from the front panel. Is an external antenna selector the only option for such a flexibility so far? Or I just miss something? Lyle already addressing this. 2) When in the contest I change bands by entering frequency into logger's call window. Now I have some local noise on 160m and therefore have to use NB there. For some reasons NB ON setting is not memorized. That means every time I come back to 160m from any other band I have to switch NB ON again. Is that a bug or is that done on purpose? Set CONFIG NB SAVE to Yes. 3) Having read all the previous messages on the subject I still do not have clear picture of how to make SUB RX drive both earphones without resorting to use of command tester. Is that the work in progress? The DSP is done. Waiting to be implemented in the firmware MCU file. Its on Wayne's list but not sure when it will be done. He's working on some higher priority items right now. 4) AF knob has recently fallen apart. I have discussed that with several other users here in Russia and found that it is pretty common case. It would be good to have substitute knobs made of some better plastic or aluminum. Is there a source somewhere in the US? Google concentric knobs??? I had one break as well about a year and a half ago due to slightly over-tightening it. No problems since. Still I like this radio so much that I have recently ordered another one. Re: [Elecraft] Subreceiver
Not at this time and not sure if this is one of the audio routing scenarios being considered. Lyle?? That saidYou can make an adapter if you wish. On the front panel and back panel phone jacks the tip is the main rx and the ring is the sub RX audio. If you make an adapter that has both ears connected to the ring connection when you turn the Sub Rx on you should hear only sub audio in both ears. In fact with the K3's two phones connections you can probably use the front jack in normal operation...left=main and right=sub and use the rear panel with the adapter so a spotter hears only the sub. But the op using the front panel jack will hear both the main and the sub. Unless of course you build another adapter opposite of the rear panel...putting both ears to the tip. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and PR6 question
Yes, that I think you can do. I don't have a PR6 to test it with though but if you are set up like this you should accomplish what you want... 1. Don't conntect the PR6 directly to the KXV3. Use very short jumpers (6 is fine). 2. Connect your RX antenna to the PR6 input that would normally connect to the KXV3 RX OUT. Have the PR6 set per the instructions otherwise so that its turned on via the DIG0 output of the ACCY connector for 6M. 3. Set the SUB antenna to MAIN. 4. Tap the RX ANT button so that the main (and sub since it's sharing) RX is using the RX antenna which is now going through the PR6 to the KXV3 RX IN. When you transmit you are using ANT1 or ANT2 as selected. But when you are receiving you are using the RX antenna through the PR6. However with this setup you will notice a 3dB drop because of the sub and main sharing the KXV3 RX antenna. If you have the PR6 output connected to the AUX RF input you will not have the 3dB drop but you will only have the RX ANT active on the sub receiver and it will need to be set to AUX vice MAIN. If you want the same RX antenna through the PR6 on both receivers without the drop you can connect the RX antenna as I said to the PR6 input and use a T adapter on the output of the PR6 to the Aux RF input and the KXV3 RX IN connection. - 73, Greg - AB7R Whidbey Island WA NA-065 On Thu Apr 2 7:57 , 'Andy GD0TEP' a...@gd0tep.com sent: Greg, what I was trying to do was use the K3 like my 756pro does, i.e. TX on the main socket out, but receive on the RX antenna, all the time maintaining the advantage of the PR6. 73 Andy http://www.gd0tep.com -Original Message- From: Greg - AB7R [a...@cablespeed.com','','','')a...@cablespeed.com] Sent: 02 April 2009 15:45 To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net; 'Andy GD0TEP' Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K3 and PR6 question I suppose if you REALLY wanted to do this you could use a second PR6 and run your RX ant to the PR6 input and the output connected to the AUX RF connector if its installed and KRX3 set to BNC. I used a 4-port Edgeport when using my PC and running the AL-1500. Did not have any issues. I have everything meticulously grounded to a SPG and my antennas are at least 70ft or more from the shack. Re: [Elecraft] K3 RTTY MODE
Cannot do this as the software sending CW would be straight CW being sent to the CW input jack. PSK-D and FSK-D from CW is only capable from the paddles input. The K3 AFSK A data mode sets the mark frequency in the VFO (rather than the carrier frequency), and allows use of the dual passband filter which is designed for RTTY use. The narrow roofing filters and the full range of DSP filters can be used for DATA modes if you configure the narrow filters for receive in that mode. Transmit must always use the 2.7 or 2.8 kHz filters, but the K3 figures out the arithmetic involved. I have both of the top boxes checked. There are special reasons for certain contests where you might want to change that. Under the Hardware Tab I select K3 for Com1 Good. Although, if you're not sure that the port you're using is really com1, check it out. I've had laptops that put com1 only on a port extender and com2 on the computer itself. with DTR(Pin4) and RTS(Pin7) both set to Always On as suggested by the N1MM information displayed. TILT! There's your problem. I'm assuming you want N1MM to send CW. To do that, left click on the Set button for COM1, then choose CW for DTR (pin4). To run only CW, choose Always Off for RTS (pin 7). If you want the computer to send PTT to the radio, choose PTT for RTS(pin7). With DTR Always On, the serial port won't send CW. With RTS(pin7) Always On, you'll be stuck in Transmit if you set the radio for PTT on RTS. Now, go to the Config Menu of the K3 (with a LONG button press for the second menu) and go to the PTT-KEY setting. To only run CW, set this for OFF-DTR. To run both SSB with PTT from the computer and CW from the computer, select RTS-DTR. [This is a WONDERFUL feature built into the K3 -- you don't need the transistor between the DTR and the key jack, or between the RTS and PTT. The K3 takes CW directly from pin 4 and PTT directly from pin 7 -- IF your CONFIG setting tells it to do so. Now, I'll tell you what I do. On CW, I run QSK with the K3. Follow the K3 manual to get there. If you plug a paddle into the radio you can interchangeably use the paddle and computer keying. For SSB, RTTY, and PSK, I use VOX, NOT PTT. For RTTY and PSK, I feed audio from the computer sound card to the radio, and from the radio to the computer sound card. So I don't use PTT (RTS) at all. Some guys like to use PTT, that's your choice. I'm a serious contester, and VOX works for me. BTW -- if you set N1MM to do both CW and PTT, you can still turn off CW or PTT or both with the CONFIG setting for PTT-KEY. 73, Jim Brown K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net','','','')Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Also, using the Winkeyer does allow one to avoid having another line for PTT. Re: [Elecraft] Microham cabling
Thanks for the heads up Mike!!! I just got the K3R cable and was going to be doing the same thing for the AuxBus line. I guess MH did this to help keep the wires from breaking of the connector but you are 100% correct, it makes access to the other connections impossible without completely redoing the connector with a new one. Doing it this way was a bad move IMHO. I may just replace them connector with RCAs and use my LDG breakout box. - 73, Greg - AB7R Whidbey Island WA NA-065 On Fri Feb 27 10:20 , W0MU Mike Fatchett sent: I have a couple of Microham cables that go from the K3's to the MK2R+. I took apart the Microham accessory connector and was going to solder on the connections I needed for my band decoder and the connection for the 6m preamp. Once I got the connector apart, I found they have filled the inside with a white semi-solid compound. The compound does not seem to come off very easily. While I am sure this material probably makes the cable better it sure makes if very difficult for those of us wishing to use the other features of the accessory connector on the K3. I haven't decided if it will be easier to cut off the connector and start over or try to cut away the white stuff with an exacto knife. A nice value add would have been to bring out the unused connections in a cable for those other uses. Re: [Elecraft] K3 choppy CW

Monitoring the signal with a K2 (dummy load in antenna socket) confirmed the reports. CW sent using the paddle was normal. Both 'station one' K3 and 'station two' K3 had the same problem - substituting a spare K3 made no difference. BTW, it's not RF getting into the computer - the keying is just as bad at 5 watts out. We continued operating, using the K3 memories for CQing and the exchange - luckily it wasn't a serial number. I don't know when this choppy keying problem started because the K3s are only keyed by CT during contests, but today we tried a spare 746Pro which eliminated the problem.
