[FLEAA] west coast chapter
I think its time to officially get a west coast chapter formed. I have been in contact with a few members. john and darien in sarasota;cornelious and armando in oldsmar; matt in seminole; jack in indian rocks beach; and george in tarpon springs. There a few others I have not spoken with but hope to this week. A tampa tribune reporter wants to do a story about electric cars. I believe if there a few of us rather then just one in a club it will look better to the public that we are not a bunch of isolated people in a hobby. Be best for everyone on the side of EVs if we were an organized group that are for and are available to build EVs for anyone who wants one. Even just to provide answers to questions would be enough. even thinking of a booth at oldsmar flea market with cornelious's s-10 not just to sell EVs but to promote them. Also to get more people to sign up for the Florida EAA. anyone in the tampa bay area please let me know, lets get this going in the next two weeks. ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org

We should have a meet and greet meeting before we can get the west coast chapter together formally. Location would be in Oldsmar and the date Saturday, the 14th. please RSVP to [EMAIL PROTECTED] all interested please let me know with name and number so I can contact all those individually. The date is tentative and can be moved for another week if anyone has that day book already and would like to attend. ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org

[FLEAA] westcoast chapter florida electric auto association meeting update
Oldsmar is the standing location for the meeting but Sarasota or Bradenton is more centrally located if the west coast chapter would include tampa all the way down to fort myers and naples. My question has always been will a west coast chapter include ALL of west coast florida or will it be subdivided into a south west coast club , a west coast club, and a panhandle club. I understand hwe have a interested person who has a automotive shop in sarasota where he makes race cars so that would make an excellent meeting place if he is willing. Lets all chime in here and give more ideas on how far each of us would be willing to travel for a west coast chapter meeting. I really would like to get this organized and done by the 21st. ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org
[FLEAA] first meeting of the west coast chapter fleaa
I think we are a bit spread out to have one big club with one meeting for everyone. I dont think it would be fair to ask people to drive long distances for a meeting with the price of gas going like it is. Ted in fort myers has the longest to drive and asking him to drive to oldsmar would be a but unfair even though his insight gets great gas mileage! Lets split up the group into the west coast including citrus county down to hillsborough county and then have the south west coast chapter from manatee south. The mouth of the bay is a great dividing point and makes sense to also divide the west coast of florida into a west coast from the panhandle to the bay and a south west coast from the bay to fort myers. As more EVers pop up in the fort myers/naples area that can have its own region unless ted already has them in order there. George has a great shop up here in tarpon springs (except for air conditioning! LOL) that the west coast can meet at. I remember darren in sarasota talking about using his shop for a meeting shop if he has room. The biggest concentrations for us are the pasco/pinellas/hillsbourgh county area and the bradenton/sarsota area. Sarasota is an hour from tampa. I know AL is out in polk county and sarasota/bradenton would be his closest meeting place. Ted in fort myers would like to go to sarasota and I dont blame him a bit!!! I think if we have local regional meetings it will be easier for all and better for all. I would gladly travel to both meeting places. I will get with george this week to finalize the arrangements for the 21st for us up here on the west coast in tarpon springs. The following weekend, the 28th, Ted has said he could make a meeting in sarasota. I can make it as well and would be happy to give anyone a ride from pasco county and inbetween down to sarasota or wherever everyone in the bradenton/sarasota area decides. The latest wired magazine article showing how ZAP for 10 years has been promising to have the car ready to buy has just done that promised with no car. [FLEAA] wake up GM!
We all can have only theories based on the known facts but its looking worse and worse for GM. One reason I can understand for GM is their stockholders expect the stock to keep climbing. GM has to build cars that people will accept to last only 5 years at the most and the trade them in for new ones because they start breaking down. They also need to make more off that car for the 5 years and thats through service. Sure people go elsewhere for service but the parts have to come from somewhere and most people still only trust the dealer. They are paying 3 times as much for service but some people think the dealer is the only one that can do a good job. Building an EV that will last for 20 years and only have battery changes for 5-10 years would kill that business plan. TOO BAD GM! You milked us for decades and now its time for a change. Times have changed and now GM is in the planned obsolescence stage that they have mastered for more than half a century. they wont make as much money off the EV but its better than going completely bankrupt and being liquidated. But maybe its too late Im for any company making a profit, that is what made this country great. But there is an ethical line that is the road less traveled by. Im sorry to say GM and all the american car makers have been following the road most traveled by. ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org

Who Killed the Edsel To: listserv@floridaeaa.org Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Anyone in this group know the history of Ford's Edsel. The following is an excerpt from wikipedia regarding the Edsel's failure: Perhaps the most important factor in the Edsel's failure, however, was that when the car was introduced, the U.S. was entering a period of _recession_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recession) . Sales for all car manufacturers, even those not introducing new models, were down; consumers entered a period of preferring less expensive, more _fuel-efficient_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuel_efficiency) automobiles. Perhaps GM is attempting to build a real lousy EVs and Hybrids so that they can go back to their old ways and say (to themselves and perhaps the public) we tried again and failed again. Read all the following article and you will see how short Detroit's memory is. _http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edsel_ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edsel) One company poping up and making EVs that work can be shut down like Tucker was. Delorean was shut down (but the cocaine didnt help). What cannot be shut down is the club based groups that make EVs. So many people will see the clubs and their self made EVs and ask for one. The club makes it and all members support its maintenance. Unless the person is familiar enough to maintain it their selves. ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org
[FLEAA] mass EV ignorance
Michael, It is not just the EV clubs and conversions that will stick it to Detroit. We need to also tap into the Gas Pump Rage (or in some cases despair) and get the word out that the public really has some alternatives to the Status Quo. Just be ready to realize that most folks are not blessed with the Time Talent or Tenacity to achieve what we are planning to do. Thanks, John I totally agree, John. Just my commute to work for 40 miles PROVES this. I drive an ICE (the hybrid the wife keeps ;( ) 80 miles a day. I never go over 55 and try to stay at 50 even on 275 in tampa. I slow down for the red lights, cuz whats the point of rushing to just stop at the light? I am tailgated, mocked (I can see them in the mirror making all kinds of hand gestures), and treated like an abnormality. By driving this way I get 30 miles per gallon. If I drive the way they are driving I get 20 mpg. It really looks like gas needs to get to 10 dollars a gallon before people with finally slow down to conserve fuel or seriously consider EVs. ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org

[FLEAA] SUCCESS!
The first meeting of the west coast chapter florida electric auto association was a great success! Even the downpour could not keep people away from the meeting. 15 people were there as well as Cornelious' S-10, Matt's Jeep Cherokee, and James' Prius. I was very elated to meet and talk with everyone. The need for a club in this area was definitely proven correct. I want to thank everyone who attended and especially thank those that drove from south of the skyway to be there. I'd also like to thank John for driving all the way from Sarasota and help out. George and Black Bay were very happy to see that their idea of starting an electric vehicle business was not in vain. They look forward to a long prosperous partnership in the promotion and building of electric vehicles with the West Coast Florida Electric Auto Association. For those unable to make it to the meeting don't forget this Saturday, the 28th, will be the meeting for those south of the bridge that couldn't drive up to tarpon springs. The parking area in on the north side of the US 41 bridge that goes from bradenton to palmetto. The nearest cross street is Riverside Drive and Tamiami Trail / 8th ave West/ US 41 (all the same at that point). I have signs that will point in the right direction and hopefully some passers by may stop to look. We'll start the gathering at 10am and at 11 we'll do the intros and such. Tom's S-10 should be there and will provide discussion I am sure. Afterwards we can go to a nearby restaurant for lunch. Next month the Electric Vehicle Initiative will be in the Tampa St. Pete area on their tour of Florida. I'd think that tying in our next meeting with them would be perfect. We want the location to be as Public As Possible so a good spot is being sought after. Im Trying to get in touch with st. pete and tampa city governments to see if they have any idea on how we can do this. Vinoy Park in St. Petersburg by the pier is one spot, or Downtown Tampa and or Ybor City. Would be interesting if we could get a line of electric vehicles to drive around each downtown areas with media coverage... Nothing is in concrete and I have yet to hear back from each city. ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org

I sent this today and got a very quick response from Michele. I'll try to get in touch with her by phone tomorrow to discuss it further. Looks like we have a winner for the date of the next meeting. Only difference (although BIG difference) is the location will be in Sarasota if You think this is a good idea Fran. If you found another place to hold your mini concert then of course we'll go with that. This of course would be an ALL REGIONAL event and hopefully we can get people from all over the state to come to this one. Things are happening fast! The date for this one would be July 26th to coincide with Fran and EVI's visit. I'd like to request that someone with experience dealing with the media generate the press release. Maybe Andrew can give us the layout of the press releases that FLEAA sends out? Also who has the Original Copy of Who Killed the Electric Car and we need to see if we need permission from the producers to show it in a public forum. -- Forwarded message -- From: Michele Mician [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Mon, Jun 23, 2008 at 5:02 PM Subject: RE: Electric Vehicle Initiative and West Coast/South West Coast Florida Electric Auto Association To: Michael Clark [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hi Michael. Fran, Looks like this fell into place nicely. Thanks to John for getting in contact with Sarasota and establishing the soon to be partnership. If you can email me a press release for Michele OR if you could include the west coast and south west coast chapters in a press release to Michele so she can get the word spread and the media involved on her end. I am sure Sarasota will thank us for backing their go green program and website as well. As long as the fort myers visit is on a weekend day I can surely make it down with as many club members as well. We will just have to have a group effort to get all the EVs towed down to both the Sarasota and Fort Myers EVI events. I have a lincoln towncar that can fitted for a hitch as well as a 1992 oldsmobile 98. Both cars could tow an EV to each event. Unfortunately they are not electric or grease burning like Matt's Excursion. I apologize if this is all short notice. 1 month notice is a bit short to arrange everyone to get together for an event in Sarasota and Fort Myers. As we get better at forecasting events there can be more notice. ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org

Have you reserved a url for the new club name? Something like suncoasteva.com or even suncoasteva.org (probably both would be good.) When I make websites I usually go through http://hostfor2bucks.com/ , there is a $5 setup fee so the first year is $29, but every year after that it is only $24. I'm not affiliated with them, just trying to help save the club money. You can buy extra bandwidth for a one time fee. As for the vans. Who owns them? Is it possible to purchase them? I mean, it sounds like the batteries, controller, and charger needs replacing, but that would be easier then a full from scratch conversion for someone. I would be interested in getting one and purchasing the components needed to get it running again. REPLY FROM MICHAEL CLARK The people that have the van are very disappointed that they are in the shape they are in. they didnt know anything about them. They want to sell them but not sure how much to sell them for. They have 2. PLUG-IN SUPPLY BRINGS DOWN COST OF CONVERSIONS http://www.pluginsupply.com ANNOUNCEMENT Plug-In Supply Inc. Unveils World's First Plug-in Hybrid Conversion Kit Under $5,000 With Extended Life Batteries Plug-In Supply, Inc. unveiled the world's first Prius Conversion System priced at $4995. Buyers can install it themselves or pay well under $2,000 for installation by a Plug-In Supply dealer. The PbA10 (lead acid) Conversion System, which turns a standard 2004-2008 model year Prius into a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) based on the CalCars Open Source design...has an all-electric range of 10 to 15 miles and improved average mileage of up to 100 miles per gallon (plus 1 cent/mile of electricity). By refining the design for manufacturing, Plug-In Supply's Conversion System reduced the conversion time from several weeks to just one day in 2007. Further improvements in design have reduced the cost and complexity while improving reliability and battery longevity. The conversion system uses new extended life lead-acid batteries (over 800 cycles), for better battery longevity than was previously available. The combination of longer battery life and lower price improves the affordability of converting a Prius. The system is designed to permit an upgrade to lithium Iron Phosphate batteries with an all-electric range of 15-20 miles, as costs for these longer range batteries decline. Under development for release this year: PSI Lithium Ion Phosphate Prius+ conversion, featuring the latest batteries from Phoenix Silicon International (PSI). The chassis will provide access to the spare tire and is expected to provide 16 miles of EV mode operation and last the life of the car. HI Is this the Gruman utility vans like postoffice trucks? Bill the battery pack was held on with 4 bolts. it was at least 1800 pounds. the connectors were a quick connect type with one on each side that popped off with little effort. I could imagine it being a type of quick change pack. The fact the chargers were not onboard could lend some idea that maybe they were thinking quick change as in when the battery runs out you put a charged pack in. but then on the other hand the watering system which was rubber hoses routed to all batteries could tend to think the pack was designed to stay in and get recharged. The battery pack was nicely built by a UK company. The large motor was built by Nelco in farnham surry, uk and the plate said 170 volts. Theory is so bunk when you consider the fact that all fuel-injected cars essentially have them already installed. ;) A Fuel Injector is nothing more than an electronic solenoid, (which when energized opens a valve to allow fuel to flow or not flow), which is nothing more than wire that coiled around...get ready for this, a MAGNET. ~Scott Certified General Master Automotive Technician creative loafing is a very liberal newspaper. they cater to the extreme left. [FLEAA] Next meeting of the Suncoast EVA
Its that time again, The next meeting for the Suncoast EVA will be September 6th, 2008 at 10 am at Black Bay Technologies. We now have another club project! We have a Volkswagon Jetta primed and ready for conversion to electric! The car was delivered this morning to Black Bay. The car is running with 186,000 miles. We will have fun removing the evil ICE and other ICE parts. The next meeting will be for all of us to put our heads together and figure the best way to get this car converted to nice clean zero emission electricity. Cornelius is ready to have us help him put in a small window unit air conditioner in his S-10. We will also evaluate if the Jetta would be best suited for this as well. My vote is to remove all ICE components, even the air conditioning and go ALL electric but that's for all of us to decide what is best for the Jetta. Cornelius has already added a 3000 watt inverter to run the air conditioner. Preliminary tests indicate only a 4 amp draw at 560 watts. not much at all. Anyone need to get in touch with me feel free to call me at 813-465-9957 anytime. Look forward to seeing everyone at the next meeting! The 1981 Mercury Linx Electrica is at Black Bay. This car was bought new, driven 1800 miles and was left to rot away. The owners were mad at the car because it was slow (only 72 volt system) and had a very limited range. The car has quite a bit of body rust but it can be repaired. The electric parts will need updating. We can add more batteries to make it faster and increase the range. This is an excellent club project along side the Jetta we are doing. We will also be doing other projects and help Black Bay build their vehicles as well. Don't forget to come to Black Bay technologies at 712B Wesley ave, Tarpon Springs, FL. [FLEAA] reselling electric
Hi Michele and All, I believe only utilities can sell electricity in Fla so you might want to check that out before buying meters. Of course I don't think the electric company will mess with those whom give them their Ok to do business. Or since they are the only ones, shame, reqire them into putting charging outlets in various places. Generally for quite a while the cost of charging EV's until there are more of them, is not going to be worth the cost, hassle to collect it. If an EV charge point spent more than $10/month on it's electric, probably much less, I'd be surprised. In my last, next EV I get 100mile range on $1.10 of electricity. Cities generally pay less by about 1/2 of that for electric, not worth charging for in the next say 5 yrs. By then the law should be changed and enough EV's to make charging pay for it's equipment, labor, bookkeeping. Jerry Dycus those laws were written by utility companies to keep people from doing business. I think there could be a way around it. If the electricity was stored in batteries or collected by the sun you could argue that you have already purchased the electricty so therefore can do with it as you wish. Software and music companies had in there EULA that you could not resell the software or music. This was argued through the courts and the courts determined that if you purchase something then you have the right to do with it as you wish. Yes the arguement can be made that you could not resell the electricty that is constantly coming into your house/business but then again, you are buying the electrons so once they pass the electric meter you should be ABLE to do what you want with them. Heck, the electric company says that they will only repair the electric lines up to your meter, and after that is the property owners responsibility. So the electric that passes the meter should also no longer be under control by the electric company and the person should be able to do with it as they chose, even to sell the electrons that were legally purchased from the electric company. ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org
[FLEAA] come see us jeremy!
Michele and All, I will introduce myself first since I am new. I am an Electrical Engineer at Honeywell in Clearwater, FL. Looking to build my first EV soon for commuting purposes. So be on the lookout for questions from me and or any resources you all may have you can send my way. As far as your statement / Question Michelle about the storage and reselling of electricity. You are correct in the thinking that once the electricty passes through your meter you are charged for it and what you do with it is your business. If you wish to store it and sell it have at it if you can find someone to purchase it from you but keep in mind they can get it from the same electric company you stored it from. As far as using Wind and or Photovoltaic sources on your home and selling it to the power company. There are some forms available on their websites you can fill out. Get it signed by a licensed electrician and submit, some charge a processing fee. The Electric Company will then proceed to your home and install a metering device to measure any electricity that is sent back to the Power Grid. Any power that is sent to the grid well be credited to you either in your upcoming power bill or in a check. The Value of the electricity is calculated from the Current market values. I hope this information helps. ANY information helps! I'd love to set up soo many solar panels that it produces enough to sell to my neighbors and only charge enough to maintain the panels. then, to have neighbors link up with neighbors to hopefully get enough for the whole neighbor but yes, this is a utopian idea and could only work in the almost perfect situation (but one can dream) Come see us in tarpon springs on saturday! We are starting the conversion on the jetta and plans on how to restore the 1981 linx electrica. Michele, Id love to see gov't officials in EVs. other area counties are all interested in them and just are waiting for them to be available. Time to show and tell not just tell. I always hear how the vehciles will be available in 1, 2, 3 or 4 years... whats the hold up? I am hearing that the electric company will only give you credit towards future bills, not cash. Doesnt make sense if you produce your own electric and do not use the grid that you can only get a credit that you may never use. ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org

[FLEAA] Another great Meeting!
http://suneva.org/SUNEVALOGO.jpg Thanks to all that came out to our September meeting at Black Bay. We saw a few new faces and were glad new people could make it. The main focus of the meeting was the DEICING of the jetta that is the latest club project. Glad to report the engine, exhaust, and gas tank are now out! The engine.s days of spewing exhaust is over. The secondary mission was to determine how bad the 1981 mercury linx was. We applied electric to the motor and were not surprised to see it not turn. We were able to have it in gear and turn the wheels but the motor could not turn when electric was applied to it. Not sure if we didnt apply enough voltage to it or not. The next meeting we will take the motor out of the linx and dismantle it to complete the testing. Now the best news yet... the launch of SUNEVA.ORG is complete! go ahead and put SUNEVA.ORG into your web browser and give it a whirl. The site already has the pictures from the meeting plus pictures of Bob Macdonald's S-10 in Weirsdale, FL. This truck was converted by Ken Watkins in Orlando, a very nice job! The site has a forum for discussion amongst the club and any others who find our site. Not only can we discuss events happening here but give technical advice to any who ask. The links page will include every EV link I can find. Hopefully the other clubs will link back to our site. I have also put in a WIKI that we can complete as a club to guide others in converting cars to electric or advising them about the current EVs that are in concept car stage. Even a background into the EV1 and other EVs that were built by the big car manufacturers then terminated due to lack of interest I'd like to invite anyone who can make it next saturday to go to the FLEAA meeting in boca raton. havent been to one yet and figure its time I go. [FLEAA] ultracaps
Message: 7 Date: Sun, 7 Sep 2008 21:55:40 EDT From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [FLEAA] afstrinity To: listserv@floridaeaa.org Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Mike, If you check out the website, the cost differential listed by the manufacturer is just over $8,000 for the whole system. The batteries are not selling for $20,000. True, it would cost about that for a traction pack suitable for an all electric EV. But prices are coming down. There is a guy by the name of Zack Radding who is building a kit lamborghini who lists the cost of 23 kWh worth of thundersky lithium phosphate batteries at $15,000. A rep that I talked to at GAIA was telling me that their pricing goal is $0.75 per Wh by the end of this year. Also, most manufacturers are advertising cycle lives between 1500 and 2000, even 20,000!? for altair nano. Advertised cycle life even for good lead acid cells is only 400. Maybe the batteries in the computers don't last long, but that is no longer a fair comparison. The batteries now marketed for traction packs are different animals. Even so, how many cycles did you put the computer batteries through during those two years? I'm not trying to light you up or anything, I just have to respectfully disagree that lithium batteries are a problem. The only problem is the up-front costs. In the long run, even if they fall short of published specs to the same degree as lead acid batteries can, they are still cost effective. On the subject of the hybrid at hand, Cool! I think George and I were talking briefly at the last meeting about the subject of using ultracaps in an EV drivetrain. My thought was to simply wire them in parallel with the battery pack and use them to compensate for voltage sag on acceleration and soak up current during regeneration. This would spare the batteries wear and tear and reduce peukert related losses. He was talking about using the ultracaps as a separately controlled power source. This would be more complicated, but would spare the batteries more effectively in the same way and extend range more than my idea. AFIK, they will be putting a cap pack into the Jetta we tore apart yesterday. I also mentioned the possibility of using my EV as a test mule for development as it runs higher voltage and regenerates. It will be interesting to see how all of this turns out. I guess that's my $0.02 worth. I'd love to hear more discussion on these subjects. Matt Kramp [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED]) Just thinking about the immediate questions that come from people skeptical about electric cars. The cost of batteries is almost an immediate concern because of the myths that are out there. People are led to believe that the cost of the batteries that will need to be replaced in 5 years negates all advantages to buying just just buying gas with their existing car. We all know there are many other costs to be considered. A 144 volt pack of lithium is at least $15,000 or more depending on where they come from. Using chinese lithiums are kind of scary due to the quality concerns. I am sure there are many people that have gotten batteries from china and had no problems but I dont want to be the one that has problems and loses alot of money being the unfortunate son. Just one case out of 50 would be greatly hammered on by the skeptics making it look like a problem overall when it really isnt. Ultracaps and lead acids seems to be the way to go at the moment with the caps and batteries in two separate packs. take off on caps has been proven effective with the trinity. but to be able to take off on caps, cruise on batteries and then have the caps recharge from another source other than the batteries we could greatly extend range and the life of the batteries. I have put forth a goal of 1000 amps for 15 seconds at 200 volts to the caps companies and have gotten responses that yes, it is possible to do that with just caps. The cost is about $8,000 but that is a high end goal. The trinity opened the subject and why its not being tested further with existing EVs. I will never know. the ultracaps are not hugely expensive. If your EV could be available for testing by all means lets do it! If we cracked this open and got it working we would give a great boost to EVs reaching 100 miles or more without NIMH batteries. ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org

[FLEAA] bye bye volt
from http://www.usnews.com/blogs/fresh-greens/2008/09/17/everything-you-need-to-know-about-the-new-chevy-volt.html Reports suggest the Volt can make it through the EPA test cycle—which from 2008 includes high-speed running, air-conditioning load, and cold-start tests in addition to the city and highway cycles—with the internal-combustion engine running about 15% of the time. The straightforward calculation gives the Volt an EPA fuel-consumption rating somewhere north of 100 mpg. But the EPA apparently wants to certify the Volt differently, insisting it finishes the test with the batteries close to full charge. *That drops the calculated fuel consumption to just under 48 mpg*, because the internal-combustion engine would have to be run essentially all the time to keep the batteries near full charge. as soon as that gets wide reports that will be the immediate downfall of the demand for the volt. There will be many that will be able to beat that but that will be the number one excuse by everyone putting down electric cars ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org

[FLEAA] VERY INTERESTED
Hello Shawn, I the meeting today I mentioned a movement in Finland to establish a cooperative effort to build several hundred EV's using a bulk buy approach and open source model for conversion, to Harvey Bennett. He and I were thinking that this idea may be of interest to FLEAA members, and may be a good initiative to propose at the Battery Beach Burnout. This is a summary ot the Finnish effort: http://www.sahkoautot.fi/eng:ev-press1 Harvey and I envision building/converting EV's with a cooperative many-hands-on Workshop, using the selected components, such as mentioned in the Finnish example. For example, following the bulk-buy of motors, batteries, etc. 6-10 people would congregate at Coastl Tire and collectively disassemble the IC auto and assemble the EV in one day (or so). This would be done for multiple copies of the EV on successive weekends (or so) up to several hundred... The FLEAA meetings, and Battery Beach Burnout would be good venues to see if the idea is of interest to enough people to proceed with the coop organization. Any interest? This is what we are doing up in tarpon springs at the suneva meeting. we want more cars to convert and have put out the word that anyone can bring their ice car and get it deiced and eved. if anyone wants to provide the cars and the parts we'll be happy to build the cars as many as we can do. michael clark president suneva [EMAIL PROTECTED] ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org

[FLEAA] battery equalizer
Submitted by Michael Clark for Matt Krump Got a question for the electrical engineers out there. I'm replacing the battery pack in the Cherokee with some new Deka Dominator Gel batteries. 12V each, #26 for a total of 312 nominal volts. They were shown to work well for years on the Geo Force with 13 - 15 batteries each without equalization. I don't trust a series string of 26 to stay equalized. My plan is to make a simple shunt with a 600W 15 volt zener diode in series with a light bulb or two as an indicator and load. Lee Hart has used a similar design using two 5W 6.8V zeners in series with a bulb or two. I think he uses two diodes to split up heat production and sink it to two battery terminals. His shunt is designed for AGM batteries. I looked up Hawker odesey charging voltage and the recomended max is 14.7V. My reasoning for a slight difference in design is that the gel batteries that I will be using have a recommended maximum charge voltage of 15.5V roughly at 90 degrees F. For a charger I am using a Manzanita Micro charger that operates at a fixed user-adjustible amperage with variable voltage until a user adjustible voltage limit is reached. Then an adjustible timer begins running while the amperage is decreased and voltage is maintained. I've thought about using commercially available regulators, but they are all $45 per battery or more and with 26 batteries, that is just too much for now. Any thoughts anyone? The next meeting in June 6th ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org
Re: [FLEAA] Not EV related-Energy Secretary wants us to paint our roofs white. Makes sense.
instead of painting them white with reflective paint put solar panels... dont try to reflect heat back out into space, harness it. then we can charge our EVs from it.. just made it EV related ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org
[FLEAA] project get ready
projectgetready.com speaking with chelsea sexton, evchels, we were talking about how to get GM to bring the volt to florida. She mentioned broward had some EV1s in the good ol days... I'd like to call all those that help projectgetready.com to get the cities in florida ready for the volt or ANY plug in for that matter. the volt may or not be realised to us lowly public beings but plug ins are here and now. Is michelle in sarasota still watching this list? could you contact me about getting project get ready going in the bay area north of sarasota? And can we get sarasota onboard with project get ready as well? ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org
[FLEAA] the answer to the lack of materials to go green
I had an email sent to me trying to point out that raw materials to go green just arent there OR china controls all the resources. my response is as follows: I am also concerned about raw materials that are mined from the earth. Would we just switch from draining the earth's oil to draining the materials needed to go green? My answer is no. we will start mining rare earth metals in place of oil however we will be getting enough to complete the global shift from oil to renewable energy and then stopping. Also the items made from rare earth metals will last 20 to 30 years before needing to be replaced. We would not be just burn the metals like oil and then going back for more. Through recycling the metals can be retrieved from the items we build with them. The lead used for batteries is 98% recycled, so why not lithium batteries? oddly enough, lithium isnt the main part of lithium ion batteries and in fact do not contain any lithium at all, only an ionic form of lithium produced from cobalt, copper, nickel and iron. China is the highest source for rare earth metals simply because its the cheapest place to get them from. China treats its workers like slaves and the government controls all the companies so they can control the prices. I would imagine when the going green shift ramps up the companies that once searched for oil will search for the rare earth metals and find them abundantly elsewhere other than china. The good thing here is when we get all the metals we need and start producing the batteries, super capacitors, solar panels, etc... we will make what we need for 30 years and then recycle the failing items and do not have to depend on mining. http://seekingalpha.com/article/103972-rare-earth-metals-not-so-rare-but-valuable There is already a process that can divide all metals and plastic from computer circuit boards so a process to recycle all the metals from lithium batteries and solar panels to be reused isn't a far stretch. Europe has already solved the problem by passing a law that all batteries, regardless of type, must be recycled. http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasicarticleId=9001626 As far as mass transit, I forsee a transportation system just like from the movie The Minority Report. Transport modules that run along electrified tracks just like slot cars. When you want to go somewhere you just tell the transport where to go and it takes you there. we already had electric street cars that ran all over a city, so changing all the roads to imbedded tracks to everywhere isnt a stretch because noone but cargo transport people would have cars or trucks. as far as where the electricity comes from to power the transport units, thats easy, over all the roads that are now slot tracks are solar panels. Think how much power could be obtained if all roads had a car port type roof over them that was nothing but a huge solar panel. we would be producing more power than we would need. ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org

[FLEAA] use of article
Of course anyone is free to use what I wrote, it was meant for everyone to use to answer the question of we don't have enough rare earth metals to go green Always good to arm yourself with good answers to people who still think going green with EVs is a unattainable goal. The answer to the statement that electric cars are small and slow is easy to answer with white zombie. People always drop their jaw when they see a 1972 datsun all electric toast a corvette. Of course after the 1/4 mile the corvette will win but its the first 1/4 mile that counts. Or the tesla racing in europe competing in long distance races. can you give us an event calendar of the races you will be in jeremiah? ___ Florida EAA mailing list listserv@floridaeaa.org http://www.floridaeaa.org
