There are certain limitations for this -- I use it all the time, but
it won't work on some streams like anything that uses flash, and it

Total Recorder captures the data from this stream in real time thus

the data from the stream to the computer, nothing more and nothing less.

You can open url?s or streams in Total Recorder for listening in the

same

What you're doing at the moment is known as a software recording
and
this may mean that other audio surces could be heard in the

recording

itself such as system sounds from your computer or even your Screen

If you Capture the stream as I outlined then the pricess is

completely

independent of your Sound card thus you can carry on with other

Anyway how you do things is completely up to you but I do suggest

read the primers on Total Recorders web page wich contain some
great

Total Recorder is an incredibly powerful tool and much of that
power

is

hidden away.

What version of Total Recorder are you using by the way?

Why wouldn’t it work? Again this feature has absolutely nothing to do with
operating system, Sound Card etc, its a Total Recorder Specific feature that
just captures the stream and saves it to a file in the format the stream is on
the Net, nothing more and nothing less.
I have the Total Recorder Video Pro edition and must do some experimenting with
that to see if there’s a way of capturing links to Flash Player, I’m sure there
is.

Does background recording work in Total Recorder in Windows 10? That
program used to work remarkably well in XP but I haven't had much success
with it since and haven't used it much as a result.

There are certain limitations for this -- I use it all the time, but
it won't work on some streams like anything that uses flash, and it
doesn't work on youtube links.

Of course not, there needs to be a direct link to the sound source and - in the
case of BBC Music - there is one, a very nice 320K source.

As far as I know the same holds true.
Now I’m doing this from memory as its been a while since I used Total Recorder,
you go into Background recording where you’re prompted to enter an UR that
links to a stream of a radio station on the net etc.
Total Recorder captures the data from this stream in real time thus avoiding
the Sound Card completely so its just total recorder saving the data from the
stream to the computer, nothing more and nothing less.
You can open url’s or streams in Total Recorder for listening in the same way
from the File Menu.

What you're doing at the moment is known as a software recording and

If you Capture the stream as I outlined then the pricess is completely

I just was not sure if I could be doing this job of recording better.

In your message you advised that the BBC were broadcasting at 320 kbps

I often use Tap-in radio or the assessible bbc Iplayer to stream the

Am I right? Or is it very much the same thing whither I stream
through Tap-in radio, the Accessable BBC Iplayer or Internet explorer.

Incidentaly, BBC radio 1, 2, 3, 4, and 6 are all termed "Global"
stations, thus the 320 kbps. However, my favourate station is Radio
Scotland, but this is considered as a Reginal station and only
streamed at 128 kbps.

So much for equality, where my national station is obviously inferiour
to all the other "British" Broadcasting Company stations!

If you’ve set Total Recorder to capture a stream then the bit rate the
stream is transmitted in will be captured.
For example let’s suppose you’re recording BBC Music? They have a 320K
stream so you would input this into Total Recorder directly rather
than use Tapin Radio.

Total recorder would capture the stream as is and thus save it to a file.
You can set conditions and so on to control the name of that file and
so on.

Re: Bit rate settings with Total Recorder

2017-01-10 Thread Dane Trethowan

Just to summarise.

The method I suggested for captuing BBC Music is just that and has
nothing whatever to do with the Sound Card because Total Recorder is
actually capturing the stream as it comes down from the Internet,
nothing more and nothing less thus what you're having saved to your
computer is BBC Music, in its original format without conversion,
without level adjustment or contamination of any kind, just the stream
as BBC sends it to the web.

If you want to set up Bit Rates and so on - then you can do all that
from Recording Source And Parameters which can be accessed from Total
Recorder in a variety of ways but you need not worry yourself with this
for the purpose you ontlined,.

Hi Tom.

This whole area of recording is just a hobby for me. I don't know the
technical side of things.

For example, is it only my imagination but does a WAV format file not sound
better than an MP3 file?

Total recorder records in Wave. I then use Goldwave to double the volume
and then maximise it and it really sounds quite good, then \I save it as an
EMP file, once my editing has been completed.

I'm just learning and trying to get the best out of my recordings but don't

Just a note in case it matters: you don't necessarily have to record and
have the file be a WAB file as TR does allow for one to record in the MP3
format, although off the top of my head, I don't remember how you do it as
it has been quite a while since I have messed with Total Recorder! Tapin

Hi, the best thing to do is to instal it with defaults set. If you
choose one of the older drivers wich allow for choosing the
application to be captured, then you stil could have system problems.
Those are mostly for xp and although it could be used, it might not be
reliable in all cases. Therefore, use the defaults in the instal and
it will put the latest good stable driver on your system. Then to
silence jaws dearing recording you should not do things on the
computer or rood it to another soundcard or headset. Or press insert
plus space and then the letter s to mute until recording is done and
turn on again the same way.

So that problem has been solved, I don't know whether it was Windows
causing it or the older version of Total Recorder.

Yes, it was intended in a way as I didn't have the latest version
installed myself so I installed but didn't look at the release date
until after.

I upgraded to Windows 10 around 8 months ago and the only trouble I
had with the upgrade was my Total Recorder 8.5 settings disappearing,
not a huge problem I think you'll admit but a problem neverthe less.

In the meantime Total Recorder V8.6 was released and I only bothered
to see if my V8.5 had been updated this morning so you know the story
now .

I'll be interested to see what differences the V8.6 Video Pro Edition
-
that's what I use - offers the user.

Well, I don't get it under 7, so it must be a total recorder problem,
not a Microsoft problem. At least, let support assess that, so send

Re: Question and a problem with Total Recorder

2015-09-19 Thread Aidan
You move forward by pressing control plus t, and backwoards with
control plus L. If you find you cannot make fine enough ajustments,
try adjusting the amount of movement with the control comma and
control period keys. So press either of those once and try move back
and forth again and ajust as needed. If you keep having problems to
close it. Try running as administrator or reinstall the program. Also,
if that don't work pleas take note. Open the program again, and try to
close it, then as soon as you get the problem again, then go to
settings, and then at the bottom you will find debug. Then tab there
til you get "save to file" and press on that, and save it to a
location where you can find it easily. Then send that as an attachment
to support. And any arrir message you get, press on the copy button
before you dismiss the dialog with the ok button, so you can paste
that in the email. Also, when saving the debug to a file, make sure
that the program is not closed before you do that. And don't use the
"save more to file" option until you asked by support.

Yep either that or ctrl-t, you can also use other commands such as jump
to time etc, there are a whole host of commands available.

Also the instructions I gave are for Total Recorder Professional edition
and above.

Question and a problem with Total Recorder

2015-09-19 Thread john riehl
First, I have a file I'm trying to edit with Total recorder. It's a .wav
file, so it should be editable. I start playing the file, then try to set a
begin and end of selection and then delete it, but that does not seem to
work.

What's the proper procedure for cutting out a snippet at the beginning of a
file?

Also, when I'm done with Total Recorder, I can't seem to close the program
without going into Windows task manager; Total Recorder doesn't want to
close on its own.

I'm using Windows-7 and the latest version of the Professional version.

Thanks.

Got to the beginning of the file, you can use ctrol-home or press the to

From here type shift-l, which sets the beginning of the selection.

Navigate to the end of the portion you wish to cut out of the file and
press shift-r which sents the end of the selection.

Press the delete key and the selection will be erased.

Tip, see the selection menu under the edit menu for further enhancements

The inability to close total recorder is a uia bug which effects both
Window-eyes and nvda. Nothing can be done unless Microsoft fixes that

Working With Total Recorder Video Edition and .Mov Files

2015-08-04 Thread Dane Trethowan

I think someone wrote about this some days ago?

I'm not certain of the process but - as I understand it - you must
install Apple Quicktime Player to access these files.

When the install of Quicktime Player is installed a plug-in is also
installed into Windows which allows the access of .Mov files form other
pieces of software such as Total Recorder Video Edition.

You could try something like Prism Video Converter to convert the file
though i'm not sure what your results will be, how much video quality
you'll lose in the conversion, guess you'll find out smile.

Have you tried the latest Quicktime? Think it came out around a
fortnight ago.

Total Recorder and working with Videos

2015-08-01 Thread Jim Portillo
Hi there,

I recently upgraded total recorder standard to the videopro edition. I have
some videos that I need to edit, mainly being able to separate them from one
long continuous video file to individual videos. It's a concert I did with
my duo, and the person who recorded our performance let the machine run.

The format of that file is MOV. When I tried opening it with Total
Recorder, I learned that it needed to be in a different format. I opened up
another video, done in a different format, and it worked just fine.

Does anyone know how to convert a MOV file to something Total Recorder can
work with?

Or, here's another idea. Is there a simple program that I can get that will
work with these types of files in a simple manner?

This is my first time working with videos, so any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Jim

RE: Recording Skype with Total Recorder

2015-04-29 Thread Humberto Rodriguez
Hello,

If your sound card has Stereo Mixor What you hear it is very easy, just
record what goes through your sound card.

If not, I believe you need the Pro version of Total Recorder, then go to
Options and Recording source and parameters; there to Advanced and select
Mixing source and soundboard.

Alternatively, you need software such as Virtual Cable so as to be able to
record incoming and outgoing Skype sound.

Greetings,

I have no problems with ending TR nor with distortion Etc. but I do not use
TR for line-in recordings, preferring GW for such tasks, I use TR mainly for
off-the-net material.

I am using V8.3 Pro on both my WindowsXP Home laptop and my windows7 64-bit
premium desktop system and, having system sounds through the audiotech
internal sound system, TR and all other sound recording software, uses the
second sound card, can't remember it's details.

Eventually, I am likely to update the W7 system not sure is the latest
version 8.5?

 Hi listers,

It's been a while since I've lerked on this list, or participated for
that matter, but I actually need some help

Due to an ongoing computer crisis, I have been using my wife's laptop
which runs Windows 7 (was using XP until my 10 year old computer
finally bit the dust), and I am having a bit of a annoyance with Total
 Recorder.

Every time I open up total recorder for any reason, I find that it
will not disappear when I close it out. I have to go to the task
manager in order to totally disable it. If I don't, if I make a
transfer or copy to another drive, where a file might have been in the
process of being edited, I cannot remove the thumb drive without going
to the task manager and ending a task which should have already have
 been ended.

I am using the Kernel-mode filter driver as recommended by TR in the
installation. Could this be the cause of my situation? And, would it
be OK to run another driver instead, and would I get a different
 result from the change.

I mean, it is so easy to forget that it is still stuck open in the
task manager, although it seems to have no other function at that
stage than to be stuck there smile.

I think I had another question, but at present, I can't remember what
it was. I'm sure I'll be getting back to all of you with that one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

 Larry

Ken, to shut TR down completely, just go to the task manager and end
it there. Problem is, that is just a bit of a PITA, and shouldn't be
necessary, but it beats having to restart the computer every time.

Hi, you must make sure under the recording settings dialog that
software moad is selected and for best results use the kernel filter
driver. If you don't see the kernel filter driver in the main settings
under the driver section, use the install file to reinstall with the
kernel filter driver selected. Then just test your volumes, I normally
have the recording driver volume set to round about 77%.

Hello Colin:

I think you are referring to Stereo Mix or What you hear, which was common
in Windows XP and in an attemp to control piracy, is missing in most
Windows 7 sound cards. You can get a similar effect and combine different
sound sources with Total Recorder Pro, it will allow you to mix in Options.

This may not apply in the least, I am still using
XP, but I noticed absolutely no difference in the
response in the menus after upgrading to the
latest and greatest version. I also admit to
being way behind on my version of WE (7.2), but
remember the days not too long ago when the menus
were totally responsive. Most likely there is
nothing for it but to upgrade and come into the
21st century, and maybe that will soon be in the
offing, but right now, these menus drive me nuts,
and I rather dread having to use them, which
fortunately isn't such a usual occurrence since
most of my recording of late is in background.

I don’t think its anything to do with Window-Eyes to be totally honest, the
responsiveness problem you outlined was a problem I also experienced with
NVDA and Total Recorder, obviously High Criteria have done something in the
latest release, anyway whatever the slight irritation has gone away though
again it didn’t really worry me all that much as I used keyboard shortcuts to
accomplish what I needed to 99% of the time.

As for different editions of Total Recorder? I too have the Video edit and

I'd press the up and down arrow keys and it would take roughly a second
after pressing the up and down arrow keys before each menu item was spoken.

I'm delighted to say that since installing the first beta of version 9
responsiveness is very quick and all the sluggishness has gone. This
makes using Total Recorder with Window-Eyes a far more pleasant experience!

I don’t think its anything to do with Window-Eyes to be totally honest, the
responsiveness problem you outlined was a problem I also experienced with NVDA
and Total Recorder, obviously High Criteria have done something in the latest
release, anyway whatever the slight irritation has gone away though again it
didn’t really worry me all that much as I used keyboard shortcuts to accomplish
what I needed to 99% of the time.

As for different editions of Total Recorder? I too have the Video edit and

All the controls available on Total Recorder Professional are available for
Total Recorder Video edition, think of it as the Professional version with
Video capturing and recording added in, think the price is around $75.

Actually there’s one question which has come to mind which I need to find out,
I know Total Recorder Professional Edition has “Pre-Recording Buffering”, I
know the “Video” edition has this but does the “Pre-Record Buffering” work for
video as well as audio? Time to research smile..

Another thing to look out for, I think the editing features etc of Total

Also note that many of the extra recording functionality such as
Background Recording are not available in the Standard edition.

I have both the Video and Pro editions of Total Recorder here, the Video
edition was $70 if I remember correctly and the Pro edition was $35.

What I'd like, but can't seem to find, is to play the file _slowly_,

I agree, the only thing why its kind of important that it support aac
plus streams and alike, is because then you can add the stations to
your favorites, and schedule something and it can record without
another player have to be open. The way it is now, you have to have
your brouzer or another audio player open in order for the skedular to
record. Wich means if I have to record something everyday at nine in
the morning, I have to set the skedual, and every night make sure
before I go to bed that the audio player is running, and I have to
even make sure the station in of intrest is running if I want to
record from radio. Wich means the radio have to play the hole night
just to enable it to be ready.

Actually the person who put me onto the “Background Recording” feature saved me
heaps of time and many of the problems discussed in the last couple of eMails
were solved.

For one thing, your browser doesn’t have to remain open, Total Recorder handles
all that and you can read your novel with JAWS whilst the recording takes
place, you won’t hear your novel reading session when you play it back smile.

Quick question about TR, if I may interject.

Does it have the facility to move through a recording at slow speed -
what in analogue parlance you might call rocking the spools?

I'm of the old school of editing - chinagraph pencils and razor blades -
and finding just the beginning of a cough, for example, isn't so easy at
normal speed.

can however fast-coward and rewind through audio and you hear the audio as

You can set the increment for this from very fine to very wide.

Thank you very much for your welcome smile

I don’t think anyone is doubting for one second what can be done but there are
some points which the original sender of the mail in the discussion brought up
which are worth mentioning again.

Audacity is free and that’s good, we all like free software however where’s the
support when you need it?

I’ve seen people on this list and many other struggling and bemoaning Audacity
sometimes so what do they do then? Of course they can search Google if they
want and nothing wrong with that as I’ve done the same thing many times
smile, they can go looking for a tutorial and just how many of those are
around.

On the other hand they can purchase a product like Total Recorder and there’s
the Tech support and knowledge base right in front of them.

Your point is well made, we’re talking about 2 very different products given
the fact that Audacity does multi track editing but I still think the point
made about Audacity originally was perfectly valid.

Yes, its the best program out there I found. Many people don't believe
it. Why should many struggle to use complex stuff like audacity if
this can do such a good job? I understand for advanced stuff you would
go furder but really this help in so many remarks. I like the fact
that you can split files in realtime manually. I don't even think it
can be done with GoldWave. Split by time many programs supports, but
split manually is something to struggle to find. The skedular is easy
to use and I like the fact that each dialog that might pup up have a
copy and debug button so you can send them all the info they need. It
also have a system as whereby you can save bug info settings to a file
and stuff so you can send to tech support. There staff is really
helpful and with such kind of tools they can easyer help you solve
problems and you can actually get the help you need. I really think
people should try it before they give it up. If you install it with
the default settings and don't change the driver moad, then you will
be fine on most newer systems.

I've just reinstlaled this software onto my Desktop, haven't used Total
Recorder for absolute ages, I've been meaning to reinstall since my
system had a major crash last year bu never got around to doing the job
until now, its like having an old friend back when that software is
handy to the fingertips and whoever set the price at High Criteria at
$35 for the Professional Total Recorder version sure gave us a bartain -
if nt a giveaway price -.

Anyway to the point, I've been setting up some schedules and other stuff
and I note that many of the problems I'd noted in previous versions of
the product seem to have been dealt with and I'm sure I'm not the only
one to have written to High Criteria either so thanks to those on this
and other lists who bothered to give High Criteria excellent feedback.

The sluggish menu navigation seems to have been fixed, there was a delay
between the time you pressed a navigation key in the menu system and the
time the computer spoke, very annoying.
