Saw my last hummer here in Union Springs on 21 Aug.. 
The local OSPREY was last seen that day also.
About a doz. or so tree  barn SWALLOWS are 
swooping over the woods up by the garden.
 
For those who want to view the breakwater at the former Castelli's Marina
you can drive down to the dock at the south end of the parking area  park
there. I was given permission last spring  told that BIRDERS are welcome.
Just don't drive along the north edge of the marina (nearest Frontenac
Park.). You can walk there  then west out to the lake edge for good view.

[cayugabirds-l] wood ducks

Here is something I would bet has been seen by nobody on this list-serve.  A
neighbor of mine watched as a brood of baby WOOD DUCKS tumbled from a big
maple tree on my street.  The mother headed for a tiny pond nearby and my
neighbor assisted by herding the ducklings in that direction.  My neighbor
is 8 years old.  I am envious.  How about you?

[cayugabirds-l] Marty's rufous hummer

Shirley and I stopped by Marty Schlabach's place in Interlaken about noon
today in hopes of seeing the rufous hummer that has been there for a week.
We were not disappointed.  The hummer made three appearances between 12:40
and 1:20.  The rufous sides were clearly visible as the bird hovered around
the feeder.
 
Clearly, it is not too late to see this rare visitor to the basin.

[cayugabirds-l] pine siskin

One pine sisken finally made a stop in our yard this a.m.  It skipped the
new nyger tube filled with delicious fresh seed and instead joined the house
finches on the platform with Ithaca Blend.  However, there were 5
goldfinches on the nyger, a high this fall. Just before the siskin appeared,
a Pileated WP flew in to the trunk of a nearby tree (ornamental crabapple)
and poked around briefly.  It may have been the same bird that appeared
yesterday, ending a long absence of pileates.  Its appearance yesterday made
it a five-woodpecker day, all seen from inside the house.  No sapsucker.  We
had another 5 WP day a couple of months ago, lacking only a pileated.

Our redpoll count just doubled from yesterday:  we now have TWO.  Ta Da!
 
About 17 siskins on niger feeders.  When they left, the resident goldfinches
returned, about 18 of them.  Hard to count 'em when they outnumber the
perches on the feeders.
 
The snow here (1 to2 inches) has made this a very birdy morning.  We must
have been very good this year, to be so rewarded.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] HUGE Snow Geese movement

 Interesting to hear that they were still streaming at 2:30.  I was digging
out my driveway at about 12:15 when I heard the Snows and saw them heading
south.  I wondered whether they were going to the corn fields because the
Canadas fly in the same direction in the morning and back to the lake later
in the day.  When the good folks south of us started to report the flights,
it was obvious the destination was not the corn fields, at least, not the
local ones.  I think the early reports started coming in about 12:30, just a
few minutes after my first sightings.  The timing and direction were perfect
for an escape to the south.  I think Geo's count was accurate.  While I
watched for just a few minutes, I saw perhaps 1000 to 2000 birds.  I wonder
what Geo's final tally was.  Too bad the birds couldn't have waited until
the census day next week.

[cayugabirds-l] Snow Buntings; Northern Harrier

Just at sundown today, there were 3 Snow Buntings and 4 Horned Larks on the
grassy shoulder of Cayuga View Rd east of Trumansburg.  I often see some
there. Also, there was a male N.Harrier cruising the cornfield and it came
to rest on the corn stubble. Him I don't see often,  Or ever.
 
Yesterday, Shirley saw 2 E. Bluebirds in a euonymus bush in front of our
house.  Later, I saw one bluebird there as it flew in with 3 Juncos for
traveling companions.
 
We have 3 tube feeders for Niger seed.  The flock empties them in a day.
The flock consists of about 40 Goldfinches, 8 C.Redpolls, and a few Pine
Siskins.  A number of Tree Sparrows, Juncos, and Cardinals hang out beneath
the tubes and salvage the spill-over.  We saw fewer birds than that in our
sector for the Christmas Count.  Alas, we are not in the count circle.
Didn't see any swans either.

[cayugabirds-l] Cooper's H.

About 11:40 this a.m., an adult Cooper's Hawk flew into our back yard and
perched on the lower rail of our fence.  Three crows (our resident family,
less one) were in attendance without the showy dramatics they go thru with
Red-Tails.  The crows sort of stalked around and got closer and closer to
Mr. Cooper.  He flew into a juniper next to the fence.  One crow peered into
the bush and the hawk flew to a low branch in an ash nearby.  He sat for a
while so Shirley and I could confirm his lineage (definitely not a Sharpie),
then flew out of sight towards the front of the house.
 
This is the first accipiter that we have seen in the yard  this winter, so
he was actually welcome, especially since he left our yard residents alone.

[cayugabirds-l] redpolls

Yesterday, I thought the surge of finches had disappered with the melting of
the snow cover.  The niger went virtually untouched.  Today, more than 75
redpolls are out to prove me wrong.  It is like an anthill out there.  There
may be well over 75 but it is difficult to count those in the nearby trees
and shrubbery.  I recall our previous max of 16 redpolls and a little envy
of those of you with hundreds.  Our 3 tube feeders are full and there are
dozens on the ground gobbling up the spilled seeds.  
 
I remember a winter in 1961 or so when an irruption of redpolls made it to
Long Island.  Had to refer to Peterson for an ID.  There were no more than a
dozen or so and they were very tame.  I stood about 3 feet from a feeder and
took lots of photos. It is nice to see them again in such numbers.

[cayugabirds-l] Cooper's

About noon today, I heard a rush of wings at the feeders behind the house,
then a e-e-ew, e-e-ew.  A quick look revealed a Cooper's Hawk perched on
the back of a patio chair.  Naturally, I had just put my camera away, and by
the time I got it out again, the hawk was gone.   I checked the feeders at
the side of the house just in time to see the hawk fly away towards the
road.  A day earlier, Shirley had seen what she thought was a Cooper's on
the phone wires near the house.  Might have been the same bird.  Might see
it again, but it may be hungry since we detected no victims. 
 
A possible victim in the near future may be a redpoll all puffed up and not
showing any inclination the take evasive action every 30 seconds or so.  Got
to clean up the feeding area, per Wesley's suggestion.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Lots of redpolls

We can't lay claim to a flock of 200.  More like a private party of 6.  One
is pale halfway up the back and noticeably fatter but it also appears to be
puffed up, perhaps like Laura's. I could not see under the rump.  The flanks
appeared to have light striping and the face profile did not appear dished,
so I have to go with Common R.

On another unsatisfactory note, there was a dead redpoll under the feeders
this a.m.  The cleanliness gods are telling me some housekeeping may be in
order.

BTW, I have seen only one report here of an increase in the Junco yard
count.  We have had 10 to 12 consistently for the past 2 months.  That is
twice our count from previous winters.  Have others seen higher counts than
normal?

Hi all
We have a flock of around 200 Redpolls at our feeders thus morning, maybe
more. 
They are very active, flying up every couple of minutes, then raining back
down to the feeders and the ground. I've noted at least one that appears to
be much larger than the rest, but I'm not sure if it is just more puffed up.
And one possible Hoary, but it does not sit still long enough to be sure,
yet. They are fascinating to watch!

[cayugabirds-l] tree swallows

Four Tree Swallows showed up this morning checking out the nest boxes in our
field. The one they seem to want the most already has House Sparrows
claiming an interest.  There may be conflict.
 
Yesterday, the first bird we saw was a Harrier and the second was a Flicker.
Both birds have white rumps, so I was wondering what would appear next.
White-rumped sandpipers? My question was answered when a rabbit ran out from
our porch.

Four WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS (3M, 1F) at our feeder this a.m. in the company
of one Song Sparrow and 2 Juncos.  Looks like fallout all over this area
based on reports from others this morning.  Yesterday there was a male
PURPLE FINCH at the feeder (FOY).

FYI, white-throated sparrows are not sexually dimorphic -- meaning a normal
human can't tell male from female in the field. But they do have two morphs
-- bright-striped and tan-striped -- with an interesting cross-preference
relationship (see

Actually, as I scroll through my Sibley's, it would seem that nearly all
Emberizine sparrows are sexually monomorphic (exceptions include juncos and
lark buntings).

Someone more expert should correct me if I'm wrong.

About 4 days ago, Shirley put some chunks of fresh orange on the feeder to
attract orioles and today her efforts bore fruit. (Sorry, but I couldn't
resist that.)  Male Baltimore Oriole about 9 am, might have been there
earlier but no one was up to see him.  Before today, a Red Bellied WP had
been pecking at the oranges.

Yesterday there was an E. Kingbird hawking insects from atop one of our nest
boxes. The box's current occupants are Tree Swallows, but there appeared to
be no conflict.  We have not seen the Kingbird again.

Just had a Ruby-throated Hummingbird at the azalea by our front porch on
Savercool Rd off Rte 89. The initial attraction seemed to be a small hybrid
lilac blooming nearby. It did not stay long, probably due to two large
critters sitting within a yard or two.

[cayugabirds-l] Yard Hawks

The best watching this a.m. is from our kitchen window.  A Red-Tailed Hawk
just flew thru the side yard pursued by a Male Cardinal (At least one pair
nests next to the house.) The female cardinal sat complacently beneath the
platform feeder with the song and chipping sparrows and a chipmunk.  Earlier
this a.m. a Cooper's hawk flashed thru the yard in pursuit of a Red-Bellied
Woodpecker. The woodpecker escaped, although its heart rate must have soared
just shy of a seizure.  The Cooper's then sat in the big tree in the back
yard, waggled its tail for a minute or so and then was escorted off the
property by 2 male Redwings (brave birds to chase a hungry accipiter).   
 
Shirley put out fresh pieces of orange for the Orioles, plus fresh jelly
(today they get blueberry).  Also fresh sugar water for the Hummer.  A crow
sat beneath the suet feeder for a while gleaning the scraps left by the
usual 3 species of woodpecker.  No little migrants today but maybe the hawks
have kept them in hiding.

[cayugabirds-l] Trumansburg Snow Buntings

Along Cayuga View Rd between the cornfields this afternoon, three Snow
Buntings in a small flock of ten birds.  I believe the others were Am.
Pipets.  Sort of lost the flock when a N. Harrier cruised in.  It hunted a
while without any success, then sailed off in the direction of the lake.
At home, two Caro. Wrens at the feeders. Also four crows right beneath the
feeders.  They must have been very hungry because they almost never come
that close to the house.

[cayugabirds-l] Ist tree sparrow

TREE SPARROWS may be old news to many of you, but we had our first one this
winter this morning.  Also this a.m., had a flock of about 50 CEDAR WAXWINGS
at the top of a couple of sugar maples in our front yard.  A few larger
birds in the same flock turned out to be Starlings.  Oh well, when you do
FeederWatch, one Starling counts the same as one of anything else.

[cayugabirds-l] starlings

Right now, there is a flock of perhaps 1000 starlings in our trees all
around the east side of the house.  Most of them came down to the creek a
few minutes ago for a little sip of water, or perhaps a bath to rid
themselves of the dirty bird' accusation.  Shirley suggests that they are
looking for my truck, upon which they often bestow little gifts.  If we get
1000 little gifts today, I will just bury the truck.

 

In Africa, there are numerous species of starlings and every one is more
attractive than these invaders. Nonetheless, a flock of 1000 anythings is
awesome when they fill the trees in one's yard.

[cayugabirds-l] Spring?

As I exited my front door this a.m. the first thing to strike my senses was
the pungent aroma of a skunk.  How much I have missed it!  How often has
anyone ever made THAT kind of remark.  So, the temperature is rising to 40
and above, and the hammerlock of winter appears to have been broken for a
brief moment.  To emphasize this, a hardy band of seven ROBINS was foraging
around the base of an old and dying sugar maple in the side yard.  Those are
the only signs of Spring so far, but it is an auspicious start.  Time to
bring in some forsythia and pussy willow cuttings for forced blooming.

Ten to 15 mins ago, about 2000-3000 snow geese flew over our barns going
from SE to NW, so may have been seen in Ithaca and vicin.

Only saw one blue but may well have been others.  Nothing like Ross's
seen.

RE: [cayugabirds-l] How close to one another will Ospreys nest?

Hi All.   My first thought is of the 6 or 7 nests on adjacent power poles
along Rte 5/20 near the Montezuma NWR.  Also, I have seen at least two
active osprey nests on the same power tower in N Carolina.  At Caumsett
State Park on L.I., an osprey platform was occupied one year by a Canada
goose family.  Near Sandy Hook, NJ, a platform was used as a nest site by a
Great Horned Owl.  The owl nesting was done by the time the ospreys showed
up.  On L.I., there was a nest of house finches immediately below an active
osprey nest.

My point is, I don't think proximity to other nest platforms is a deterrent
to ospreys and may even provide some surprise nesters.

Is there a down side?  For the ospreys, the limiting factor would be food
availability.  If the fish supply dwindles, the birds will go elsewhere.
For humans, the presence of more raptors means more opportunities to observe
how the natural world works, and that is not a bad thing.  My vote would be
for more platforms.

I noticed that an Osprey platform has been installed on the hill above Myers
Point. There are already two nests in the area, the first on a pole within
the Cargill mining complex at Portland Point, which Robin Bailey's husband
Paul (whose last name I forget, sorry), who works with NYSEG, provided with
a platform after the nest sticks touched live wires and caused a fire. The
second is at Salt Point, on a platform and pole installed for the purpose.
They are about a mile apart, and this new platform is midway between them. 

At the south end of the lake, in Allan H Treman State Marine Park in the
field east of the Hog Hole, there is another Osprey platform and pole. It
took a few years to become occupied, but since has produced young multiple
years. 

I just got word from Rick Manning, Friends of Stewart Park was just
notified by Jeanne Grace, city forester, that NYSEG wants to install an
osprey nest or two in the park. 
I'm wondering what people's thought are about how many Osprey platforms
would be appropriate at the south end of the lake and where? By the way,
I've seen a young Bald Eagle perch on the platform at Treman a couple times,
but it was skittish and left when it noticed me. I wonder whether Bald
Eagles are likely to take over Osprey platforms the way they did on the
power pylon by Mud Lock for several years. If so, it would be good to have a
place for those Ospreys to go.

Hi All.

Just another thought, if I may.  There was a time in my lifetime (OK, so it
was a long time ago) that there was a large osprey colony on Gardiner's
Island on Long Island.  They nested ON THE GROUND.  No need for platforms.
Then came the first invasion of Herring Gulls.  The unfortunate result was
pretty predictable.  The gulls destroyed nests, eggs, and chicks.  Give the
ospreys credit; they invented pole nests.  Then the power company tired of
putting out fires, so they planted a few old telephone poles and bolted
platforms on them.  The ospreys were grateful, and remain so today.

[cayugabirds-l] Phoebe and others

A phoebe arrived this a.m.  Will it stay? None stayed here last year.  Two
TV's circling over the corn fields at the intersection of Seneca Rd and
Kingtown Rd (TBurg) about 1:30 today.  Yesterday, two turkeys on Savercool
Rd just west of our barns. I stopped the truck and they just poked along
until they found a hole in the brush that they could escape into.  Bluebirds
and House Sparrows trying out the nest boxes.  There are about 16 boxes but
all the birds seem to like the same box.  Two days ago, there was a Caro.
Wren singing here.  On and off for the past 2 months, there have been 1 or 2
C. Wrens coming to our feeders.  We never saw any signs of succumbing to bad
weather except for the time last week when they got shut into the garage.
They were not there long, and gratefully flew out when the doors were opened
later in the day.  A couple of years ago, a C. Wren perished in the garage
after getting shut in.  Two robins acting very territorial.  Several birds
collecting nesting materials.  Happy Spring.  Go bird!

[cayugabirds-l] Chipping Sparrow and others

Our first Chipping Sparrow showed up at the feeders this afternoon.  It was
scratching around under the sunflower seed feeder.  Not long after, a
Sharpshinned Hawk cruised thru the yard but made no attacks that I could
see.  This a.m. a Flicker flew away as I drove past the barns.  In other
news, things in bloom include Lenten Rose, Scylla, and one daffodil that may
pop at any moment.  Snowdrops and croci are on the way out, having served
their purpose of announcing the arrival of fine weather.  A few minutes ago,
the fine weather blew hard thru here with a big dump of rain.  So it goes.

Hurrah! The west side of the lake finally catches up with the rest of the
basin. This morning between 7:45 and 8:00 in quick succession we had a male
Baltimore ORIOLE, Purple Finches (3 females), and White-Crowned Sparrow, all
seen while I was seated at the breakfast table.  Easy viewing, but it seemed
like a long wait. Now we are waiting for the first hummingbird.  The feeder
has been up for a week.

[cayugabirds-l] Female RWBB

I don't recall any reports of female REDWINGED BLACK BIRDs this spring.
Maybe it is just a memory problem on my part.  Or maybe nobody finds them
worth reporting. The reason for my interest at this time is that we just had
one at our feeders. There have been one or more males around the yard. But
this is the first female this year. It is like finding a new species because
they are so different from the males. Perhaps a couple of you could
enlighten me on what you have seen so far. Dave N, do you have a record of
the FOY this year?

[cayugabirds-l] Indigo Bunting

Just as the clock struck three, a male INDIGO BUNTING landed on our rear
patio next to the feeder. It spent a few minutes sharing the feeder with a
female Baltimore Oriole, then flew away.  A terrific bird, one that we have
not seen before in the yard.

Last night, during our sunset walk at Salt Point in Lansing, Joe and I got
some nice views of the osprey pair sharing a fish on the platform edge.
When we were ready to leave (it was getting quite dark by then) one osprey
was down incubating presumably while the other stayed alert on the perch
(ha-ha... fish or pole or both). Some movement along the outside of the nest
caught Joe's attention.  Although the light was terrible, I could see a
long, twitching tail with a slight notch and very quick movements.  Blue
gray gnatcatcher I'm guessing.  The little bird and the big osprey had to
have been aware of each other but unbothered by each other's presence. The
little bird worked its way around the edge and then into the nest itself
before it got too dark to see anymore.  
What was going on? Gleaning bugs?  Anyone else seen this? Could it have been
some species other than gnatcatcher?

About 8:30 this a.m. a flock of Common Grackles descended on the lawn behind
our house.  Probably in the order of 200 birds.  I didn't scan the whole
flock but there did not seem to be any other species mixed in.  So, does

[cayugabirds-l] red crossbill???

Within the last hour, there was a bird on the platform feeder that I first
assumed was part of the resident flock of House Finches.  The breast
striping looked a little different, more like a Purple Finch, but nothing
else looked like a P. Finch. The bird ate voraciously and was very
aggressive, chasing finches and titmice away.  A closer look at its bill
showed it to be skewed with the lower mandible to the left of the upper.  I
am not familiar with crossbills so I checked in Sibley. ( I opened right to
the page showing Red Crossbill. That seemed like a good omen.  I tried not
to let that sway my judgment.)  The juvenile Red Crossbill looks much like a
H. Finch.  I have three questions. First, does anyone know of H. Finches
with deformed bills? Second, what is the likelihood of a Red Crossbill
coming to a feeder at this time of year?  Third, what else should I have
looked at to confirm my ID?

[cayugabirds-l] red crossbill???

Thanks all for your comments.  I feel politely admonished for not taking
photos when I had the means and the opportunity.  I had asked whether anyone
had heard of House Finches with deformed bills.  The answer was Yes.  I also
asked whether it was likely to have a R. Crossbill on our feeder at this
time of year. The answer was, anything is possible. I also asked about
further ID factors to consider.  The R. Crossbill is a bulkier bird.  Our
visitor was exactly the same size as a typical H. Finch.  So, there was
enough evidence to reverse the call on the field.  The default call is H.
Finch with a deformed bill.

A footnote to the Tetlow's report: one of the Trumpeter swans in a group of
5 at K-M had a blue patch on its left wing.  From where Shirley and I were,
we could not read a number.  Also, we counted Sandhill cranes three times
and got a different result each time. Our high count was 52, very close to
Tetlow's 48.  We heard them calling before we found them.

 Our afternoon trip through Montezuma started with the Eared grebe along
the wildlife drive in the first opening after the channel unlike earlier in
the day reported further up the drive. It would be very easy to miss as for
every 2 seconds it was up it spent 8 seconds underwater.  

 Both the adult and immature ibis were out preening around 2pm but
quickly split up; one disappearing into the reeds to the north and the other
into the back edge cattails to the south. The Am. Avocet was very
cooperative.

 The biggest change from last week was the large number of Lesser Scaup(
with a few Greater's and Redhead mixed in) on the north end of the main
pool.

 At Knox-Marcellus 48 Sandhill cranes were very active. When we arrived
around 3 pm there were 7 Ross's Geese among the 500 or so Snow Geese.
Several groups flew out and we could not find a Ross's among the100 or so
remaining. There were a few Trumpeter swans mixed in with 100 plus Tundras
there and a larger group(maybe 15) of Trumpeter's on Armitage Road, one of
which had a green wing tag. Way back at Puddler's  there were at least 2 of
both Greater and Lesser yellowlegs. No Great Egrets.  Mike and Joann Tetlow 

 

 p.s.On a sad note here is a post from Oneida Birds as I know some have
regularly  checked on this bird.

that has been hanging around the shopping plaza on Route 31 in Clay is now

at their facility. It was brought to them this morning. The owl was

struck by a car and is underweight.

[cayugabirds-l] tree sparrows

Maybe it's the sudden snow or maybe it's the everything mix I get from
Pine Tree Farms in Interlaken, but finally this morning we had TREE SPARROWS
(4) at our feeders.  First of the Season for us.

Besides the usual seeds and corn, the mix has lots of nuts and fruit.  The
Blue Jays (8) can hardly wait until I take a couple of steps away from the
feeders. The Mourning Doves (16) show a little more restraint, but today was
the first day they showed up in force.

Be thankful today and every day for the surprises nature has for you.

way from Taughannock gorge to Frontenac gorge.  Within minutes we were
notified that a courageous friend had passed on in the early hours of the

I was out about 9am and saw and heard many hundreds of Snow Geese flying
south, so if Ellie saw them in TBurg about 10am, there must have been
thousands across a broad front.  Shirley and I were on Sheffield Rd about
2pm and saw hundreds of Canadas and somewhat fewer Snows in the cornfields
around Iradell Rd.  So maybe not all the geese were headed south of the snow
belt.

[cayugabirds-l] raptors

Around 50 minutes ago, a SHARPSHINNED HAWK landed on a branch next to a bird
feeder just outside our kitchen window.  Stayed for about 20 minutes and
left hungry.  Flew towards the other end of the house but out of sight.
Probably a young bird as it was not very red on the breast.  Within a few
minutes, a buteo landed on a cedar down by Rte 89.  Its head was rather
white, just like the juvenile Swainson's in Sibley, but the feathers on the
back were speckled white like a red-tail, so I will call it a Red-Tail with
a whitish head. The tail was plain but not red, so I will call it a juvenile
Red-Tail with a whitish head. So there you go.

BTW, we have not seen a Sharpie here in a decade.

[cayugabirds-l] new yard bird

Besides being a new yard bird, it is a new computer-room-window bird.  I saw
a big dark shape cruising just above the trees outside our window and looked
closer to ID it.  It was a mature Bald Eagle.  Wow! What a thrilling bird. 

Earlier today, Shirley found our first Flicker of this winter on our
platform feeder. Our feeder count for the day is 20 species. No redpolls or
siskins.

[cayugabirds-l] mockingbird, others

This afternoon I went to the cornfields on Cayuga View Rd, TBurg to
photograph the hundreds of crows. In a small tree next to the road there was
a MOCKINGBIRD, the first I have seen this winter. (Well, maybe the second.).
Further south on the road were 4 HORNED LARKS.  But the crows were the main
show, swarming on the road and filling the treetops.  There is still corn
standing unharvested and many of the crows were perched on top of the
stalks. They were not obvious about their eating, but one of the group that
had been in my trees a few days ago had pulled apart a squirrel nest, with
no meal apparent.

About an hour ago (10 to 10:30) a mixed flock of blackbirds assaulted our
feeders. Total of about 20 birds about equally divided among Redwings,
Common Grackles, and Cowbirds. All appeared to be males. That was followed
closely by 2 Pine Siskins on the niger tube, the first here all winter.
Almost all the usual birds were here, in contrast to yesterday which was
extremely quiet.

[cayugabirds-l] bluebirds vs house sparrows

WE have about 16 nest boxes on poles around our field. Initially they were
for bluebirds, and then the tree swallows arrived.  Our strategy: the nest
boxes are erected in pairs: one for the bluebirds, one for the tree
swallows.  House sparrows may move into one box in a pair, but not both.
(They don't like house sparrows for neighbors either.) Same for tree
swallows.  By the time the bluebirds come around, there are still empty
boxes to choose from.  Last year, at least 3 boxes contained bluebird
families.  Fair enough.  Try it, it may provide housing for everyone.

Just had a RAVEN on the hawk perch in our field next to Rte 89.  Had never
seen one there before.  However yesterday, I was walking up Cayuga View and
heard and found a Raven sitting in a tree near the private air strip.  It
vocalized for a while and a second Raven joined it in the tree. Both then
flew from the tree down the slope towards the lake.

I don't remember a Porsche but I do clearly recall a customized van he drove
to spring bird biology field trips, either in "00 or '01. The van was all
wood paneled inside and immaculate. Ever after I would meet him at various
mtgs etc. and sometimes with his bike. In those years he wore an orange
biking jacket and was easy to spot. I could even know it was him from our
house above Rte 89 heading north. Wonderful, friendly man. I felt fortunate
to have known him.

[cayugabirds-l] "The Birds"

For the past 3 hours, a flock of STARLINGS has been building up in our
neighborhood next to Rte 89.  I would estimate that there are currently
(almost noon) over 1000 birds, almost all Starlings with a robin or two and
some cowbirds.

It is awesome to be at or near the center of activity. It is just like the
movie.  I am expecting a panic-stricken call any moment from Tippi Hedrin.

For the most part, the birds are in the grass in the field, poking around
for bugs and seeds.  Some are in the crabapples and some are in the
buckthorns and many are just hanging out in the other (non-food) trees.
Every so often, the flock rises up and moves en masse to drop their
blessings on another part of the neighborhood.  That's the time to get an
idea of the total number in the flock. It could even be as many as 2000
birds. Awesome.  And today is one of our FeederWatch days.  We have already
had a flyover Raven. Happy Bird-day.

Within the last 10 minutes, while looking out my kitchen window, I saw one
Tree Sparrow, one WB Nuthatch, and three Ravens. Why is this notable?  We
did FeederWatch Sunday and Monday and saw NONE of these birds! 

 

Actually, the Tree Sparrow was a surprise.  Haven't seen any here for a week
or more.  Are any more still around?

Big day for Shirley.

A CAROLINA WREN appeared beneath the suet feeder, picking up a few scraps
dropped by the woodpeckers.  We will have to wait to see if it is one of the
wrens from previous years.  They have nested in the eaves of the garage.
Not only that, but they have endured the constant coming and going of human
types beneath their nest.

A little after 9am today, Spring arrived. A single male REDWINGED BLACKBIRD.
He was followed closely by a second and a few minutes later by 13 GRACKLES
and a third Redwing.  The great event was witnessed with trepidation by a
dozen Bluejays and 20 Goldfinches.  Of course, snow is in the forecast so
there are a lot of birds flying around the yard. Smile.

Anne, there are a bunch (8?) of TVs that roost in the firs behind the
community center, so you happen to be in their territory. What may seem to
be more birds may just be that you are close to the mother lode.  Enjoy

While checking on and looking for crow nests around Ithaca, mostly to NE
side and Cayuga Heights, I am encountering numerous vultures swooping low
through neighborhoods, just sailing around looking for your backyard
carrion, I suppose.  But my impression is that there are more than in years
past, and closer, lower and more "residential".  

In my view, the crows have had a lot of reason to attack as the vultures
have come within 20-30 meters of nest sites, looking pretty predatory.
Yesterday, I watched an acrobatic event between crows and a low swooping
couple of vultures over Pleasant Grove Road near Forest Home and Hasbrouck
community buildings yesterday, with the vultures having to dodge and sail
pretty fast, after they dropped in over a nest.  

Am I just not remembering past years, or are there more vultures close at
hand over residential and campus Ithaca?

Hot Dang!  A pair of Balt, Orioles were pecking at the orange slices all day
today.  It just seems to take a little longer for the species to filter into
the habitats on the west side of the lake, but we check every day once the
birds are spotted on the east side.  Another example: yesterday a Catbird
flew up from our creek.  I think I heard him say the east side was too
crowded for him.  On a sad note, a Common Yellowthroat was found lying on
the trail next to the creek in a state of great weakness---near death I
would say.  We moved him off the trail and today when I checked he was gone.
We hope he recovered and left of his own accord, but...who knows?

intersection of Falls Rd and Cayuga View Rd  north of Taug. S.P.

A little bit north on Cayuga View there were 2 Killdeers next to the road
between the cornfields, probable nesters based on past year's experience.

Between 300 and 400 Crows (a scene from "The Birds") landed on our field
next to Rte 89 (the Boulevard ) about 15 minutes ago and they are still
there.  They walk thru the grass, last mowed in July, searching for some
succulent prey.  There is no snow on the field so they have the whole place
to themselves.  I took a couple of fotos but the bulk of the flock can't be
seen due to trees, barns, etc.

Between 8 and 9 this morning, our yard was invaded by a flock that included
a FLICKER, 8 ROBINS, 4 STARLINGS, and all the usual suspects.  Not a lot of
birds but perhaps the remnants of a migratory fallout last night?  The
starlings were squabbling over a hole in the trunk of a maple.  No birds
have EVER used the hole for shelter or nesting, so the starlings were just
being starlings, fighting over something just to claim ownership.

Regarding Karen's crow story, I have seen the same activity on Cayuga View
Rd in TBurg in past years.  The impression I got was that it was a
convenient spot to have a conversation.  No refreshments served, no minutes
recorded, just the local gossip.

feeder.  Also a second Song Sparrow in the same place.

For Donna, the huge flight of Snow Geese from the cornfields flew down to
the lake about 10 minutes ago.  They were headed towards the power plant but
you should be able to see their raft(s) from your place.

There have been 2000-3000 SNOW GEESE in the air over our place since noon or
so today.  Generally headed north.  Now from our kitchen window we can see a
raft of Snows on the lake.  They would be about a mile north of Taughannock
Falls SP.  I am headed out to see if there is a closer view suitable for
some pictures.

Shirley and I just got back from a trip up the west side of the lake.  We
talked about the improbability of seeing a GREAT BLUE HERON since we
couldn't remember any having been reported yet.  On the way south, we
stopped at Wolffy's for coffee and homemade carrot cake, Very good! And we
got a scoop of vanilla with it.  About 100 yds south of Wolffy's, there it
was---a GBH standing in a little pool surrounded by rushes.

We had expected to see thousands of snow geese, but only saw two modest
rafts, a modest sized flyover, and a modest flock in a cornfield.  There was
a scattering of ducks at the north end with a dozen different species.  The
best bird, however, after the GBH was a N. HARRIER near the visitor center
at Montezuma.  It drifted very slowly over the pavement right in front of
us. A beautiful day for birding.

I agree with Geo about the great butterfly weather.  Around our yard in the
past 2 days there have been Aphrodite, tiger swallowtail, silver-spotted
skipper, Monarch, and of course the cabbage whites.  Also, goodly numbers of
wasps and hornets.

[cayugabirds-l] Guess which bird...

To clarify (or to add to the confusion), there is a migratory thrush in
Europe that goes by the name of REDWING.  It is not clear to me that the
bird in the report from Scotland is a Redwinged BLACKBIRD.  The REDWING
looks superficially like the female blackbird, being brown, sort of stripey,
and showing a white eye-line.  It may be unusual or even rare in Scotland,
causing some excitement.  BTW, the Redwing is in the same family (turdus) as
the American Robin.  Glad to be of help.

[cayugabirds-l] red headed WP

Shirley reports that she just saw a RED-HEADED WOODPECKER being chased thru
our side yard by a Pileated  WP.  She knows the difference between
Red-headed and Red-bellied WPs and clearly saw the all-red head and
all-black back, plus the bold white areas in flight.  This is the first
Red-headed WP seen in our yard in the 18 years we have been here.

Different subject: Hummers.  After seeing a female a few weeks ago there was
nothing until two days ago.  We have seen both a female and a male at
different times in the past two days. Smiling.

Snake day yesterday.  We were working outside yesterday and saw two,
possibly three milk snakes (plus a shed skin), a garter snake, and a black
snake reported by our daughter.  All this was after a Spring with only one
garter snake sighting.  We are wondering about the experience of others.

We did our FeederWatch duties this past weekend and counted a total of 6
species.  The only true winter birds were a small flock of 4 Juncos that
appeared at the last possible moment.  The rest were usual yard birds.  This
did not alarm us because our experience has been that at this time of year
the warm-weather migrants have left and the winter migrants have not yet
arrived.

 I checked my journals and found that in 2001 on these same dates we had 24
species at or near the feeders. And a total of 99 individual birds.  The 24
species is still the high species count for our yard.  I do not draw any
conclusions from this comparison, except that the comparison is striking.  A
number of our listserv correspondents have `noticed a lot fewer feeder birds
this Fall and the cause is certainly something to speculate about.  Happy
speculation.

About 8am today, I put out a dish of grape jelly on the off-chance there was
an Oriole in the neighborhood.  By the time I got in the house, a male
Oriole was sipping the jelly.  A second Oriole appeared seconds later,
followed by a RB Grosbeak, followed by a goldfinch in glorious color.  All
were on the feeder at the same time.  Meanwhile, a FOY Brown Thrasher landed
atop the nearby rail fence.  . An eye-popping show of brilliant colors.

Hi All.

Today is the busiest day this winter at our feeders.  Highlights: SONG
SPARROW on ground beneath tube feeder containing "Ithaca Blend";
Rough-legged Hawk {very white) flying thru back yard accompanied by angry
crow.  In excess of 3 dozen Goldfinches on niger seed and sunflower seed.
Six N.Cardinals.  Fifteen species by noon, the most in this very slow
season.  No Siskins but we keep looking among the suddenly numerous
goldfinches.

Laurie reminded me about early robins. We had one last Thursday (2/15), our
FOY also.  The bird was under attack by 3 Blue Jays but defended itself
well.  It was bulkier than the Jays which probably helped it.

Just had a first in the yard---a Great Blue Heron.  And we don't have a
pond.  The biggest squall of the day just passed, having brought a pretty
dense snowfall.  The GBH may have become disoriented and just picked a
landing spot with no trees or brush to cause a hazardous landing.  This
morning a flock of about 200 Cedar Waxwings spent 15 minutes inspecting the
tallest trees around the field.  Weird day.  Snow all day but none on the
ground until the latest squall.
