Celisa, Jonathan and Lee are on the right track. Many insurance company estimators are trained to write what they can see or *know* to be damaged, and then they can pick up any unknown items as a supplement if the shop finds that the item is damaged while it is at the shop. Just like you would not throw your money at a mechanical repair without a solid diagnosis as to what the problem is, an insurance company estimator is not going to wave the company check book at a part just because the body shop rep says or "thinks" it is damaged. Is anyone here going to say they think their insurance premiums are too low ?! Didn't think so.... Ask your Allstate claim rep if they denied a request for the steering items and why.. I'll bet you get a satisfactory answer. Let us know. IMHO, there's no way that a shop rep test drove your car and *knew* it was not handling right and gave it to you, just the same as there's no way that an Allstate estimator and claim rep would send you back out on the road with a car they knew is not repaired properly. Both are in the business of *fixing* your vehicle after a claim, not creating another one! Mark Williams Dallas, TX claim rep by day.. Ditto the Mini - MY2002 was the first year for the new version. Same for the Lexus, the "430" motor didn't appear in any Lexus until MY2001 and the SC430 didn't come out until MY2002. The Z8 didn't debut until MY2000 either, so I am not sure there is ANY value in the Edmunds numbers :-) They also didn't factor in that some of those cars are limited production or hard to get cars. With most Mini dealers selling all they can get for MSRP or over the used market tends to be higher. Of course, the bottom end cars are so cheap do begin with that with incentives the used prices HAVE to be low or no one would buy them. With real expensive cars they almost always retain more (percentage) of new (while losing lots more dollars) since they cost SO much - saving 23% on a slightly used M5, for example, saved me LOTS of money :-) I would expect fixed price cars like Saturn to show up well too. Since there are no deals and usually no incentives they would tend to retain more of "retail" price. Where another GM that was discounted and rebated thousands off of retail to start with would not keep nearly as much. They are comparing current value VS MSRP - not what everyone actually paid. The S2000 DID retail a lot of its value at first - demand > supply and some dealer gouging (or at least no discounts) led to high resale. I picked up a SLIGHTLY used (1700 miles) 2 year old S2000 at the end of 2002 for 25% off of retail. With lots of competition now (350z roadster, G35 coupe, RX8) in the price class I would expect the price to fall to even more normal levels. Add in the MY2002 cars and newer got glass windows and the MY2004 slight redesign and the old cars will really drop. You'll find the warranty will be for whatever market the car was intended. In other words, if you've found a way to legally get a new German market BMW into the US, you'll get a 12 month /12,000km warranty on the car. Very optimistic. Dennis, Funny you should bring them up. We are just finishing a set of 245/40-17 MXs on her car after about 18 months and 25+K miles. They are also very heavy, but great on dry and decent in the rain. Only two bad things about them: - they are not available in proper E36 tire sizes. 245/40-17 are the closest to stock, but priced at $130/pop. Between Kumho's conservative size measurements and wider/taller than stock tire size, the left rear rubs on my '95 M3's muffler. They did fit my wife's 328i. - they drone. A constant low frequency drone that, luckily for me, my wife does not pick up. I guess my ears are more sensitive in the lower frequency range. Someone else brought up RE750s. I had the early RE730s that did not howl, were fantastic in the rain, good in the dry and lasted me 3 DEs and a full autoX season. Bridgestone had since hiked prices up to the $150 range for later RE730s and now RE750s. Thus they are priced just about even with the Goodyears. Thus my interest in GS-D3s. alex f ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 11 Feb 2004 12:36:30 -0800 (PST) From: John Bolhuis <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: <rant> autoextremist on BMW Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> ouch. I'm pretty sure autoextremist isn't the only one displeased. I kind of agree with them. BMW is in the process of making a bunch of attrociously styled automobiles that are more geared towards severing the driver's attention to driving rather than interesting it. I think the guy is right, in a few more years, I don't think BMW will be associated by anybody as a driver's car or a sports car. Sorry, the new BMWs are the "Ultimate Distraction Machine." For the driver, it's the spending 30 mintues to get the A/C & stereo working & for other motorists, it's the danger from staring off the road in order to divert their eyes. However, this isn't BMW's only problem. They're facing a lot of tough competition. Audi & MB have much better looking cars that are easily a match performance-wise. Audi especially is gunning for them performance-wise. BMW is about to get another super-sedan challenger from Caddy as well. From the other end of the spectrum come the super rice-rockets from Mitsu & Scooby that have truly come with their fighting gloves looking for the "Ultimate Driving Machine" title. It's unfortunate that there exists the possibility that the E36 & E39 will be thought of as BMW's pinnacle. However, on their current path that's where I'd have to stand.
