Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Peter, I had an identical issue with my old E36 325. Different animal but very similar problems. Car would stall every now and then, sometimes while coasting to a stop, sometimes at 80mph on the highway, sometimes at idle. No rhyme or reason to the stalling. The car always restarted. The problem would often go away for a few days and then resurface. It took 4 months before the dealer could replicate and solve the problem. They finally replaced the DME unit. Aparently it would reset itself whenever it felt like it. Then all was well :) Rob -----Original Message----- From: Peter Guagenti [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, January 23, 2004 4:40 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [UUC] Anyone heard of intermittent stalling on E46? I would recommend the UUC Twin Silencer above all others. Best balance of sound and power. I've driven a couple of cars with that exhaust and loved the sound and extra pulling power. I switched from the System*U to the TSE on my '95 M3 and there was a noticeable drop in the volume in the car, so your experience won't be 100% applicable. Talk to Rob about options with a resonator to help control volume. -peterg ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 23 Jan 2004 20:03:59 -0500 From: "Gary Derian" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Cylinder Head Torquing advice Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> The S38B35 used in the M6 had head bolts that were torque only. My last amplifier was mounted up against the driver's side of the trunk, outside of the carpet, with the crossovers for the front components mounted behind the carpet where the stock amp used to be. I found that the last amplifier's mounting interfered with access to tail light bulbs on the drivers' side. It also cut into the working width of the trunk just enough to make golf clubs an awkward proposition. has anyone come up with other spots to mount a moderate sized (50W) amp? I'm thinking up under the parcel shelf at the top of the trunk might be an alternative...mounted right side up with a little room for cooling. Thoughts? A few weeks ago, I posted to the UUC Digest asking if anyone had any cheap E32/E34 bottlecap wheels for sale. I received one or two replies from people hours and hours away from me, and then I received one from someone that's a few hours south of me. As I was planning on making a trip down to his area anyway, this worked out great. We just met last night and did the deal. I thought we would just talk for about 5 or 10 minutes, but we ended up talking well over half an hour. If it wasn't so late and chilly out there, we may have talked for hours. I say this gentleman is a great example of a BMW enthusiast because, not only does he own a gorgeous, tastefully-modified E32 735i 5-speed (which I saw last night and was VERY impressed with), he also owns an E30 cabrio (and wants to do a 5-speed conversion on it!) and has an E34 Touring in the family, too. As we talked, I found out we had more in common, too. A few of my career plans follow what he has done, so I have found yet another mentor to help me through some of these details. I, too, will be in the market for an E30 Cabrio within the year, so I can always ask someone close to home -- like this gentleman -- about his opinions on them. I don't have much point to this post except to say that it's always nice to meet yet another great BMW enthusiast close to home. Thanks again for making my evening, Don!! I assume the root cause is the valve sitting on the exhaust manifold that bleeds pressure to the secondary air pump, right? The one that is listed for ~$100 at the dealer. I just want to make sure I am buying the right replacement part and that a). the old part (roughly 1 years old, original replaced when the secondary air pump went out last spring) can not be R&R-ed; b). the code is indicating trouble with some other component. If you have any experience with CE code 'Fd' or EVAP shut off valves, please share your wisdom. -- alex f ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Jan 2004 14:22:06 -0500 From: "Chris Pawlowicz" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: Re: Oil in air intake, '86 325e Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Carey says > I noticed lately a big puff of blue smoke indicating oil when I first start the car but nothing afterwards. my '89 325i with 200k+ miles does the same thing if the car has been sitting for ~1+ weeks > > While changing out the alternator I noticed a large puddle of oil in the rubber hose connecting the air intake to the throttle body. I've seen this on my car and on other E30s.. moisture also works it's way into that area and if the AFM is mounted a little lower than stock location (like if you are using a cone filter) then the moisture runs down into the AFM.. which can freeze it on really cold days (like -30 temperatures) which makes driving somewhat interesting ;) > > Anyone have an idea what would cause this and how to fix? > > Other than startup it doesn't burn oil and oil use is low for a car with 200k + miles. >From what I understand, smoke on startup is generally due to oil leaking down past the valve seals. When the car has been sitting, you get a pool of oil around the valves which works it's way down into the cylinder. I think it's just an issue of worn seals. A little oil and moisture in the throttle body and area is also pretty normal.. it works it's way up there over time. I'm thinking that when the seals get really worn and the engine starts sucking oil through 'em all the time, it will be ready for a top end rebuild - grind the valves, new seals, maybe a cam upgrade.. hehehe Chris Pawlowicz '89 325i, '99 Z3 2.8 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 24 Jan 2004 15:07:26 -0500 (EST) From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (bmw list) Subject: E30 runs again! (was @#$#% E30 fuel woes) Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Found it. After replacing the pumps and having things go for a little while. After a wild goose chase across the ignition system. After lying in my back in a puddle of rapidly freezing water, I found my problem. A bad splice under the back seat. I discovered that I had no voltage at the main pump. No voltage at the transfer pump, but I had voltage at the relay and fuse. I also had current draw through the fuse. About 2A worth. Confusing but it must be electrical. This lead to a little panic as I started to trace wires. It is amazing how long an E30 gets when you know that there is a fault in a wire somewhere between the gastank and the fusebox and you don't know where they go. I got lucky. I was digging through a bundle of wires to see if one of them looked like it went to the main pump when I discovered blue/green mud. Some more poking gave me three green/purple wires that didn't go anywhere. Continuity verified that two of them went to the pumps and one of them get 12v when the fuel pump relay was bypassed. Repair the splice and I was back in business. All I can figure is that in my tests where I was getting current flow "to the pumps" I was actually getting flow "through the dirt". Thanks to everyone who offered help with this problem. It was a doosey. -- Joe -- Joseph M. Krzeszewski Network Operations [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jack of All Trades, Master of None...
