As a simple artwork addition to my M3 racer, I am having a set of the
LTW-style motorsports flags produced. I had these on the car once before,
but an ill-fated day at Thunderhill left me having to repaint my car.

The flags are a replica of the ones that came on the M3 Lightweight, but are
in a single color. I have them in silver on my black car, which looks very
cool. Like the bad-guy version of the lightweight ;-)

I already paid for the reproduction of the artwork (which was far from
cheap), and now it's just the cost to cut the vinyl. If anyone would like a
set of these flags for their car, they will be available for $100/set. Just
tell me the color and they're yours. The flags can be used on any car -- we
had them on the Bavaria we ran in Targa, I've seen them on E46's, E30's,
etc.

You can see pics of the flags at:

http://www.guagenti.com/Flags-Front.jpg
http://www.guagenti.com/Flags-Rear.jpg
http://www.guagenti.com/Flags-Side.jpg

E-mail me if you're interested. If we get enough quantity (5-10, 10+) I
should be able to talk the sign shop down on the cost.

Those look great! I take it they're permanent once applied? Can they be
made in any color?

Bora & Group,

The AllRoad is being discussed as the original question was about an
AllRoad. Believe me, out here in Oregon, they are very popular. I guess lots
of people care about the clearance. Also, they have a wider stance and
stronger engine than the A6. I personally prefer the lower stance as you do.

I thought Subaru Legacy was the official car of Oregon :-)

I think the allroad looks cool when compared to an A6, but I would
rather have an S6 Avant.

Out of curiosity, where in this civilized country are there popular
driving zones where such ground clearance is required? Is there some
random nature activist terrorism where impressionable students from
Oregon State are moving boulders and tree stumps into the middle of
Main Street?

But I've got an open mind. Convince me that there are more than two
types of driving requirements requiring one or the other vehicle:

1) Serious off-roading with major ground clearance, chassis and side
plates, and preferably a chase vehicle or at least a 2-day food
supply packed in the back.

2) All other regular-height vehicles.

The AllRoad doesn't fall into category #1, and I made it through
several deep snowstorms with a low-slung SVX. My high-riding Nissan
pickup only gets to exploit it's ground clearance when I choose to
tackle the snow mounds that the snowplow left on the sde of the road
long before I woke up.

Make mine the S4 Avant any day.

Worcester MA. There are a number of roads around my apartment that are only
paved in the sense that the remaining pieces of pavement aproximate a paved
road. I have bottomed out my E30 in the "pot holes" in some of these roads.
I buckled a 14 inch bottle cap last year on RT 9. RT 9, by the way isn't
some small back road. Two lanes in either direction, runs from Worcester to
Boston. The best road approaching my apartment has variations in height of
better than a foot. Don't go any faster than 20MPH or you get to test the
bump stops.

Nope, just lack of maintainance. We have overgrowth of better than an entire
lane, pits in the road, general lumpiness and patchwort paving. This is in
one of the major Massachusetts cities too.

Subject: Shock & strut insert interchangeability
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

This is going to seem like a strange question to ask ...bear with me if
I ramble on a bit (so what's new ?you ask ?).

The design of all BMWs since the 1960s has involved some version of a
Macpherson spring/strut up front and a tube-type shock and coil spring
in the rear . BMW are NOT alone here (Macpherson worked for Ford in
England when he first suggested the strut )..there are LOTS of cars
using the same approach ..

So , in a nutshell .....How many dimensional differences are there
between the different strut inserts and shock diameters/lengths ? ..and
how many applications will interchange ? Is there an Interchange guide
out there similar to those the wrecking yards use to know which
(motor..trans..diff etc ) will interchange into a particular car ?

Coming from a long history in the Manufacturing / QA business I try to
imagine how the folks at (Bilstein...Koni...Gabriel..Monroe ..)
determine the variety within their product . Production machinery for
millions of product requires 'standard sizes' for the input materials
...so are there only (say ) 3 or 4 different diameters of tubing used to
make ALL strut inserts ?If different insert manufacturers have varying
'standard size' hardware ,how does that jive with the car mfrs
strut-tube dia?the insert MUST fit into strut but not flop around while
in there . How about length ? Rod diameter ? ...when I look at pix of
strut inserts for (say ) 5 ,6 and 7 series BMWs (or Fords or VWs etc)
they all look pretty-much the same (I KNOW 5 and 6 use some common
inserts )..so will a 7 series insert fit in a 5-series strut-leg as an
example ? -how about a 3-series insert ? If they'll fit in the strut
body ..will they 'work' ? (as in attach to the strut-top bearing etc ?
)....Whats the chances that a (toyota?..Mazda...Ford? ..etc ) insert
will fit into some BMW struts ? (VW Rabbit inserts supposedly fit 2002s
!!). Is there any data out there ? ..forget for now the question of
damping ..just consider the physical 'fit' .

Rear shocks , unless theyre in a spring/shock assembly (like the 320i
and E3 ) are easier ...the diameter of the body is usually
inconsequential as it is surrounded by air . But the length overall and
the top-fitting style and dia determines whether it will physically fit
. In days of yore I have used Sears shocks on the back of 2002s with
great success .

My reason for asking ? Ebay !! There are quite often NOS strut inserts
(Konis , Bilsteins , etc ) show up there for what are silly prices ($49
a pair with NO bidders !!) but with very limited applications specified
simply because those items are defined in some catalog as fitting ONLY
that application . To quote Eliza Doolittle .."Wouldnt it be luvverly "
if we at least had a crossover list that told us what else theyd fit ?.

Imagine a fleet of BMWs hurling about ,full of (Toyondazukisuzu, GM ,
Ford etc ) suspension bits on all corners ...or 7 series full of 3
series bits (or vice versa ) ..if only we knew ...

The floor is open for discussion....

Bill Proud ,34 yrs putting specific shocks onto specific cars ..only !!

That's pretty damn funny.....

Well, I wouldn't go that far. There are quite a few central european
pilsners that are quite good. One of my faves, although it usually reaches
the US skunky is Singha (correctly pronounced "Sing" BTW). Every now & then
you get a good 6er, but you have to hold the open beer properly inverted in
a glass of water (a tricky bit to learn) to get the formadehyde out. Yummy
& over 6%. We drank this stuff on draft by the gallon in Thailand.

Of course, can't count out wiessbiers, which most of my many, many German
colleagues (what, Siemens has Germans?) seem to prefer.

The best is living across the street from a Taco Mac....over 100 beers on
draft. The bartenders who know me, just keep rotating me through good
beers. Best of all, I only ever seem to get charged for about 1 out of
4......well that & the hot Brazilian bartender....well, it's probably not a
bad thing that i can & do walk there & back

One of our drives guys from Mexico drinks Corona & doesn't take a lime. He
says the limes are for women, just like margaritas......

Actually, my *REAL* requirement isn't about ground clearance, it's about loading
height. Given the
length of time that our household keeps cars, I'm planning that this car will, among
other duties,
serve as baby/child hauler in it's lifetime, and my wife is concerned about the
constant bending to
get a baby(ies) into a baby seat. With its suspension set at 3, it's a reasonable
reach for her
into the back seat of an Allroad, and the X5 being an "SAV" has the load height as
well. I just
figured I'd throw out the general topic of X5 vs Allroad to get peoples impressions,
since those are
our finalists (two "taller" cars that still perform). We've toured all other SUVs
('cept the Lexus
330) and nothing else works performance wise. There's a lot of talk on the Audi
Forums about this
topic, so I figured I'd check on the BMW side.

If it weren't for the ride height/baby seat issue, we'd probably be in a 540it for
general household
grocery and mulch-getting. I generally don't see the need for all the hauling capacity
and size that
people buy (all the Suburban driving housewives in Dallas?).

As for poor weather traction, my wife and I are perfectly happy with E36s and snow
tires. I
actually spent last Wed night cursing some Audi driver who was crawling home at 15 mph
on back roads
that I was comfortably rumbling along at 35 on. AWD does nothing without the right
tires.

Oh, and the Allroad can be lowered (in the cockpit) to have about the same ride height
as the Avant.
The height adjustable air suspension is pretty nifty. I just wonder how long it will
last.
