Wow, you guys are harsh. At first, I thought the new 7 was hideous, but now
I love it. Not sure why....it grew on me. I saw a 6 on the interstate the
other day and thought it was great looking. I love the E46 3 series...a HUGE
improvement over the E36. Obviously I haven't seen the new and upcoming 3 in
person yet, but BMW isn't doing as bad as some of you are making it....it's
all relative, I guess. BMW is doing one HELL of a lot better than Mercedes
Benz this year, so somebody must like the new bimmers.

I'm confused by BMW doing better than MB too. Too bad, because Mercedes has
some of the very best looking cars on the road now, IMHO. I saw a bright
red SL55 this morning. Damn, that has to be one of the most striking cars
out there. It's MUCH better looking than either the 6 droptop or the Z8.
Probably a much stronger performer than either too. Could be that MB scored
much lower in quality surveys. How are Lexus & Infiniti playing into
this?????

I like the C230 sedan as well. It's too bad it's a still a little too MB,
because it's really good looking & seems to have a lot of potential. Those
things have freakin' huge brakes......

I also agree that the E46 is better looking than the E36. Too bad it
signifies kind of the end of BMW's driver's car theme, with the wishy-washy
steering, porky curb weights & seemingly lower build quality.

I thought the Mcoupe was a great car to drive, even with the dumbed-down for
the US market motor. The steering is great, the handling great & the brakes
tremendous. If you could find a way to ditch some lbs from that car it
would be even better. I'd like to start with sound deadening so that the
car had more aural appeal, as the car felt quite muted inside. Even with
the windows down, it was difficult to hear.

With a little more of a raw edge, louder exhaust & the euro S52 or the S54,
that car would prolly be something else. The US motor just gives up a lot
of fun at the top end for low-end grunt. I myself, prefer a car that is
most happy well up in the powerband.

Yes, it would be nice to have an S54 Mcoupe.......

Lee
88 M3->has everything else, only short in the hp dept.......of course, it's
whooped up on every 6-cyl BMW it's come across......I'm pretty sure I could
whoop my own ass with the S54 coupe.....

Yes, was there really anything special about the Z8 apart from the quantity?
It's not bad looking, but the SL is much better. For a high-end cabrio, the
911TT is the best, but for exclusivity, I'd prefer the current Aston's.

Have you seen an SL recently??????

I said it. And I think Mike L. did too. From a distance, it looks like an
Accord coupe.

I have to agree here. However, the available 17" 7-spokes are quite nice
looking.

I liked the sedans better than the coupes, but I like the somewhat more
muscular stance of the pre-facelifted E46s.

Better than the Z8??? Beg to differ on that one. The Z8 is and will be a huge
collector car based
on production and exclusivity and is truly one of the better looking cars BMW ever
made. I would
take one in a heartbeat along with a 507.

MBs all look the same and are all pretty conservatively styled in my opinion. Don't
get me wrong,
they look fine, but they aren't exactly turning many heads.

Say what you want about BMW styling (and obviously, many of you do), but I like the
styling of the
new 5 series, the 7 isn't that bad, not great either but easily recognizable as a BMW,
and the new
3 will be nice I believe. The 6 is fine too, not amazing, but a perfectly acceptable
design too.
Whoever said it looks like an Accord is nuts though... ;-)

They simply don't look like they used too, get over it.

And some of the ugliest stock wheels made IMO (not that they aren't easily changed).

I still like the looks of the E36 but the E46 is nice as well.

Or you could just stop by any of the shady looking used car lots in your
area and ask them to set the mileage to what you want, lol. Not
recommending anything under the law, but just an FYI that the devices to set
mileage exist and seem to be common according to some local sources. So if
buying used, double check any vehicle if the mileage doesn't seem quite
right.

I have been looking at used E36 328's lately and have noticed 2 that have
had less than 1000 miles in the last couple of years according to carfax,
hmmm. Plus they didn't look like 80k mile cars, more like 180k abused
cars.

I should know better than to comment but a couple of thoughts:

- a dairy cow is more likely to weigh closer to 1,000 lbs or more (depending
on the breed)
- that calf was surely much younger than one year old, probably just a few
months if it was still with the mother and the mother cow was protective.
- cow tipping is a fallacy and cows don't sleep standing up

Oh well, there it is.

Still a pretty funny story. I do believe it is the first time I have ever
read or heard someone state "She gave a scary ass cow scream".

Later,

Rich

PS - those Aussies are crazy I tell ya...

I've tried this route with my car ('94 325is, solid ABS light, all the
time). In both cases the mechanics were friends of mine and had Snap-On
Modis scanners. In both cases the scan tool seemed to start reading
codes, then gave up with a 'no-communication' error. One of them, who
works on more bmw's than the other, said he'd never seen anything like
that and that I should probably replace the ecu, but he wasn't sure.

What scanners are the other bmw mechanic folks using? Peake tools don't
read ABS codes btw... We're basically still trying to figure out if this
is a problem with the Modis scanner or with the ABS ECU on the car.

Maybe I'll call the dealer. I can't believe that will do anything other
than piss me off, but who knows.

Ok, so called the dealer. $77 to pull the abs codes, should take an hour
or so (not sure why, but then I haven't been able to pull the codes
myself, so what do I know. :-)

That's not too horrible I guess. Still not my first choice, of course.

FWIW,
I've noticed significant age-based divide in responses to the new BMW
design trends: younger people love them, geezers hate them. Most of the
latter also like the older, more conservative BMW designs and steadily
migrate towards Mercs.

As BMW CCA is aging, guess what opinion is getting a lot of airtime... ;-)

For the record, I LOVE the Z4, the new 6 and the E90 (the new 3).
I also like the iDrive, with all of its imperfections, though I would not
mind to see some controls physically duplicated (like radio).

As for the NYT reviews - they were amateurish: comparing the 6er to
Mustangs and Pontiacs, regretting that plebeians might get thier hands on
such cars once they depreciate, etc.

Yea, all those damn plebians who can only afford a BMW once they depreciate.
Those kind of people should be...uh......oh, wait......

I remember there was a doctor or something recently who wrote to one of the
BMW marque magazines complaining about "lesser" or "poorer" folks buying
BMWs once they came down in price, thus lowering the status of his car. I'd
say he must not have seen the "Arrogant, self-important ass." option
checkbox when he was buying. Comes with automatic "close the gap in front
to not let anyone in" cruise control, the cross-wise through 2 spaces
parking assist and the increasing-sensitivity drive by wire which increases
throttle response when pedestrians are detected ahead.

He may have also opted for the "nose up display," a bell that alerts the
driver to plebians driving depreciated cars so he can indignantly turn his
nose up to let them know he is the better person.

What actually bothers people like this is that lemmings typically can't tell
the difference between a few model years, so no one knows that he can afford
to pay $30k more for the same car 3 years older sitting in the next lane.

So what's one of them fancy-schmancy 645's got that a Rustang ain't??????
Next year, the 645i will be down some 55hp to the GTO, although from what I
read recently in CR, the GTO could use some help in the brakes dept.

>

Lee

P.S. I was jsut at lunch with a colleague who's not a car person. He saw a
645 & asked what it was. I told him. He thought it was nice, but that it
looked just like an Accord.......;-P
