While the face design does not exactly win me over, it does not depend on a removeable faceplate for security. I'll check it out after we get back from our road trip, during which we'll torture our daughter with Santana and Little Feat, and she will reciprocate with any number of head-banging groups playing what I'm calling "loud angry music". The car came with the standard radio and tape deck. No trunk CD changer. I replaced the tape unit with a single disk CD player (Ebay), which has an AUX in connection. I got the AUX cable at the local BMW dealer for about $30, but I didn't install the input connection in the glove box as the directions outline. I routed it behind the HVAC controls and put it on the far right of the DSC switch panel just above the coin tray. Looks factory and the connection is right there -- no putsing around with the glove box. Any audio source like an MP3 player plugs right up and the AUX connection is now available through the Mode button on the radio. My MP3 player is dying, so I switched over to my Treo since I've got it with me all the time. The Treo is tricky because the line out is the wired hands-free mic connection as well as the headphone connection. The Treo measures the resistance across the connection and either turns on the port for the mic or turns on the port for the stereo out. It's also a 2.5mm connection, which requires a silly little adapter that Palm charges a relative bundle for. I wasn't using the included cheap hands-free headset, so I cut off the mic which left me with a properly sized 2.5mm male connection. I soldered on a 3.5 male lead on the other end and plugged her up. The Treo "sees" the car speakers and turns on the headphone out port. New MP3 player. Now the fun part, depending on which audio player I'm using, when a call comes in, it either stops the music or lowers the music volume and plays the telephone audio through the car speakers. It also leaves the Treo mic on, so I simply start talking. I'm experimenting with MMPlayer and Pocket Tunes and I think I'm leaning towards Pocket Tunes. It stops playing when a call comes in, while MMPlayer continues. MMPlayer is really designed for videos, so it's GUI is clunky for music. Been listening to some Buddy Guy and John Lee Hooker all week and makin' phone calls. Pretty sweet for a bit of wire and solder. Bought the GF a black Nano and &*&(%*%(&)(*&)(&(%^$$&%&^(* does that thing scratch like crazy. I laughed when I saw the lawsuit over the scratching issue, but after spending $250 and noticing that blue jeans scratch it etc now I understand the lawsuit. The plastic is simply too soft for a consumer device that is used in the manner of a mp3 player. As to the normal ipods, I believe the color is on the inside of the clear plastic case or atleast that is the case on my white ipod. If this true, both will scratch equally but maybe the color black shows the scratches more compared to the white. I personally would choose black since it just looks better for a personal entertainment device.
