If you have the Bentley manual for the E30, Section 6, page 36, left column
at the bottom.

The inductive pickup on the #6 cylinder is used to correctly sequence the
fuel injector banks.

Some time ago, someone in here had a problem with their car randomly
stumbling and dying. They managed to trace it to an intermittent inductive
pickup. It seems that with a good signal the ECU can fire the even/odd
injector bank at the right time based on the inductive pickup and the crank
sensor. If it can't get a signal from the pickup it fires both banks together
based off the crank sensor only. Either way the car runs just fine. If the
inductive pickup is intermittent, the ECU can't decide which mode to run in
and fires the injectors at all the wrong times.

So, it will run with it and it will run without it, but not both at the same
time. :)

I've got a question for y'all out there regarding speedometer back
lighting. A number of months ago a had a dim spot appear at the 40 km/h
on the km/h scale. Since then the dim spot went away. So far, so good.
Tonight I turn the lights on and now I've got two dim bands, only on
the km/h scale the areas between 60 km/h to 120 km/h and 220 km/h to
240. Has anyone experienced anything like this or any ideas? If it was
a burnt bulb, I would have expected losing a section in both the scales.

TIA,
Steve

Marc,

We tested the tires for Eurotuner , the article came out in November
2005:

http://eurotuner.com/techarticles/160_0511et_tirereview/

Some of the top tires overall were :

Goodyear F1's
Michelin Pilot Sport
Yoko Advan's

But there were a lot of tires that were really good.. The article is
great , maybe someone has it they can post?

And the illumination wouldn't magically return, either :-)

Yep, I've had similar instances of dark spots on the cluster, only to have
them be re-illuminated sometime later. Some aspect of the light routing,
either the tubes or how they're attached to the cluster face gets obscured
or dim for some reason (temperature? vibration? age?).

It'll be obvious if one of the general illumination bulbs gets burnt out,
a whole section of the cluster will go dark. There are only 3 or so of
these
general illumination bulbs, so a huge section will be affected.

Otherwise, just one of the "E36 quirks", I guess :-)

Once you have the cartridge out, try pressing and holding the green
eject button a couple of times; sometimes it will "reset" the unit. If a
CD is still in the changer, reinsert the cartridge and turn on the
ignition, as I have found that sometimes the changer will stick the disc
back in the cartridge.

I was wondering if anyone here had any experiences with VertexAuto.com and
their products?

I read their latest add in the Roundel and they listed a bunch of fitments for
cross-drilled rotors with "cast in holes" that look interesting. Yet when I
checked their site, they do not show up anywhere when I look for them.

Curious as to their quaility and the service of the company.

thanks,

David in Richmond, VA

I have bought clutch kits from them several times and have been
pleased with prices, delivery and service. I have no allegience or
opinion other than that, except I agree that their website isn't the
best.

Does anybody here happen to know the steering rack ratio for the E90
325 and 325xi (non active steering versions)? Or even if anyone can
confirm that the two use the same rack ratio would be helpful.

Thanks a bunch in advance for any help.

Search parts here: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/select.do

The part numbers are different between the two.

How hard is it to change out the rear wheel bearings on an E30. I just got
an 87 325i coupe 5 speed. Nice little car, but noisy in the rear end. I
thought it was the diff, my trusted mechanic said it is only bearings back
there. Any recommendations on where to get them other than the local BMW
dealer?

In case anyone is interested. Other than what's on the ad I know nothing
beyond that.

The location is pretty far from me, otherwise I'd volunteer to scope it out
for anyone that might be interested.
