Solid State Hard Drives

2012-03-16 Thread Peter Romain
Hi All,

I couldn't get ITSM to run on my laptop which has an i7 processor and 8G RAM.

I recently upgraded it to 16G and replaced the hard drive with a 500GB SSD.

Now ITSM flies and I can run it and ADDM together in VM's and still do the
normal document/email stuff.

Are SSD's now sufficiently stable to use in datacenter servers?

If so, would this help solve some performance issues?

I'm not responsible for any servers so am just asking out of interest.

Cheers

Peter

I know a lot of SAN storage is now converting over to SSD's an that is
enterprise class storage so I can't see why servers wouldn't be able
to run it as well.

Re: FTS Plugin issues in 7.6.04

2012-03-16 Thread Mike Worts
Hi,

Yep, we have raised this with BMC. I have been hosting a daily call with BMC
since we went live in October going through our issues and slowly but surely,
resolving each one through hotfixes or small configuration changes to our
system. I must say, BMC have been very helpful. I think one one of our
challenges is that we are one of the very few customers using 7.6.04 on an AIX
platform and we were also one of the early adopters, so it has been a learning
curve for both ourselves and BMC.

Our FTS symptoms have been very interesting. We reported last October, that our
FTS Java process was flat lining at 60% CPU. It was a random occurrence
happening only twice in a few months, but when it started, it did not stop
until we killed the process. Most recently, we have been getting the error I
mentioned below, but again it does not happen frequently. We found KB351120
recently which you may know about, but I don't believe it is related to our
issue.

For those who are thinking of moving to 7.6.04 (Re: Which sp of 7.6.4 is most
stable?), I would agree with others that SP3 is your best bet. We are now in
production on ITSM 7.6.04 SP1/AR 7.6.04 SP1, but we have to monitor the system
quite carefully for those small blips!

Mike.

2012-03-16 Thread Murnane, Phil
Peter:

I have a habit of keeping a resource monitor (Windows 7 Resource Monitor or
CentOS GNOME widget) running on my laptop at all times and of never using the
host OS to do anything except run VMs. Given sufficient RAM (8GB seems
adequate), I've found that the hard disk is almost always the bottleneck in
performance, especially when running more than one VM.

I've been considering buying an external esata enclosure with two 7200 RPM
drives configured as RAID 0 for my work laptop. I use a similar storage
configuration on my home server, and the disk bottleneck is much reduced.

All that being said, SSDs have seemed pretty stable for the last couple of
years. If performance similar to the RAID 0 configuration can be achieved
internally, then it would be _way_ more convenient than an external enclosure.

I really like working with Working Lists, but I can see if it's enabled, the

I would love to see that stuff when using Working Lists. I checked under

I guess it might be hard because each object would have slightly different

2012-03-16 Thread Ortega, Jesus A
Lars,
It will change the support group name, not the ID, on many of the ITSM forms
and update functional roles for the people in that group. However, it does not
update any templates that are using that group. So, if have any change, work
order, or Incident templates where use that support group, make sure to change
the ownership first to another group or it could corrupt the templates. That
has happened to me with infrastructure change templates. Make sure to check
the group notification option on the support group after you've renamed it. It
will set it to no and that group will not get messages when a group
notification event fires.

2012-03-16 Thread Mike Worts
Good question. There is history behind it which I won't go into :) (but it
includes the words IBM and outsourcing)

We have been running v6.3 on AIX very successfully for many years. We have
found it to be a robust, reliable and stable platform. It is obviously not
everyone's first choice, however, I can vouch for it and have had positive
experiences using it over many years. I think we are starting to see a few
issues with IBM Java, which probably accounts for quite a few of our rendering
issues.

Besides that, I like it !!

We reported last October, that
our FTS Java process was flat lining at 60% CPU.

We are now in
production on ITSM 7.6.04 SP1/AR 7.6.04 SP1, but we have to monitor the system
quite carefully for those small blips!

we have a long standing open ticket with BMC Support. I cannot be sure if this

update any templates that are using that group. So, if have any change, work

I would suggest using the recommended version.

Sometimes little things like changes in the subdirectories of JDE / JDK would
mean that the AR would not find the necessary libraries where it expects them,
as often these relative paths are hard coded in the application logic. This
will cause the java dependent portions of your app to fail.

Re: Tomcat URL Redirect question

2012-03-16 Thread Axton
If you are using different hostnames, why use a load balancer? If you want
to use different hostnames and the load balancer (for redundancy), you can
create two VIP's, one for each hostname, then set up the nodes in the VIP
appropriately, as one active/primary, and the other for redundancy.

For example:
VIPa nodes: server1 (primary), server2 (failover)
VIPb nodes: server2 (primary), server1 (failover)

Just set up the redirection so that all traffic goes to the primary except
in the event of a failure, and set up the monitoring so that it can check
the up/down status of each node.

If you are instead talking about the context path (e.g.,
server.com/arsys/forms/server/formA versus
server.com/arsys/forms/server/formB), you can set up your proxy software to
redirect to the appropriate Tomcat instance.

Are you using anything in front of Tomcat (i.e., mod_proxy, mod_proxy_ajp,
mod_jk, etc.)?

Can you cite any specific examples? I would imagine that so long as
the classpath and library paths are set properly, things will work. I
don't forsee the locations of the JVM libraries changing in a way that
would break this.

Also do not load SP 3 first. There is a known issue. Load ARS SP2, Atrium Core
SP2, ITSM SP2 and other applications. You then upgrade ARS to SP3

I do not remember specific examples, but I do recall codes where one or more
files from the bin folder were called using relative paths in the code. If
it wasn't for that, it would have found the files using classpath or path. I
did get around by copying files where they were expected, but that’s not a
clean..

Can you cite any specific examples? I would imagine that so long as
the classpath and library paths are set properly, things will work. I
don't forsee the locations of the JVM libraries changing in a way that
would break this.

Disclaimer: I don't/won't use Windows as a server OS.

Prompt a message if multiple rows are selected on a table field.

2012-03-16 Thread Raj
Hello All,
I would like to prompt a message if multiple rows on a table field is
selected.
Currently, this table field is on a display only form.
I am trying to make sure that the User selects only one row to perform
other actions in that display only form.
Currently, when he selects Row - 1 and then Row-2 on that table field,
then clicks on a button on that form, the additonal action which is
being perfomed on table field acts only on the first row selected.
Although, I know I can do a table loop(Active Link Guide) to make that
action being performed on multiple rows, but at this point I would
like to prompt a message.
How can I do this?
Please advise,
Regards,
Raj

So the issue is that if you have installed as, or updated to, ARS 7.6.04.03,
then the Atrium 7.6.04.02 installer fails? Typical behavior for any SP2
installer, in my experience. I’ll be waiting for SP3 on ALL of the
applications.

Not sure about the prompt, but you could always just set the Single Row
Selection only option for the table to prevent it.

Admin Tool - on the Advanced Display tab
Dev Studio - Display - Row Selection attribute

Hello All,
I would like to prompt a message if multiple rows on a table field is

Raj,

If your intent is simply to restrict multiple selection on that table, you
can just go into the table properties and set the Single Selection Only
flag.

without a 12 min admin per: (none that we know of)

Question: is there some other free tool out there that can do it?

would not this be a good idea to have?

This would be a customisation though, which we're always trying to avoid.

If changing the status works without affecting anything else then this

I've been considering buying an external esata enclosure with two 7200 RPM

All that being said, SSDs have seemed pretty stable for the last couple of

Re: Wonder how many of these tales are true....

2012-03-16 Thread Boyd, Rebecca
I grew in South Jersey. I can’t vouch for any of these tales, but I can
tell you there’s over a million acres of pines trees sand called the
“Pine Barrens” in NJ.

The Pine Barrens are as beautiful, lonely creepy as it gets. Miles
miles of two lane roads with scrubby pine trees on either side. Every so
often there’s a sandy one lane trail off to one side or the other. Turn off
onto one of these roads. It just gets lonelier creepier. You might find a
quarry but don’t get too close – you could be up to your knees in sand
still sinking before you know it. You might see an old wreck of an
abandoned car with bullet holes in every square inch.

And then there are the remains of what looks like an animal carcass. Now
try to find your way back out to the main road.

The Pine Barrens is where the Jersey Devil is said to live. It was also an
episode of The Sopranos, the one where Paulie Christopher take a Russian
mobster into the woods (the Pine Barrens), end up getting lost have to
spend the night in an abandoned vehicle.

No wonder many of the places listed on the web page are in or around the
Pine Barrens.

Re: invalid relational operator exception from QualifierInfo

2012-03-16 Thread Anthony Jurado Jr
Hi,

Thanks to LJ and Jose for the replies! As suggested I looked at the logs.
The output seems to support the idea that there is a bug in
parseQualification:

When called on a field that works as expected ('Summary' in the example
below) the result is:
SELECT T852.C1,C536870989 FROM T852 WHERE (T852.C8 = 'atl01a') ORDER
BY C536870944 DESC, 1 ASC

When called on a field that causes an exception ('Associated Asset' in the
example below) the result is:
SELECT T852.C1,C536870989 FROM T852 WHERE (T852.C536870989 ORDER BY
C536870944 DESC, 1 ASC

When called using LIKE instead of = on the 'Associated Asset' the result
is:
SELECT T852.C1,C536870989 FROM T852 WHERE (dbms_lob.instr
(T852.C536870989, 'atl01a') 0) ORDER BY C536870944 DESC, 1 ASC
Unfortunately, while this runs without an error, it does return any
results.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems to me that parseQualification is
not generating a working sql statement in the example that causes an
exception. Note that there is no comparison operator or RHS value between
T852.C536870989 and ORDER BY.
Further, the sql statement that is generated when LIKE is used doesn't
result in the correct results.

thanks again,
Tony

Tony,
I have tried doing searches (via the user tool) on 0 length fields and
received errors (I believe it stores them in clob in the db)...but I'm on
SQL, and my error was different...but I suspect that the problem is a DB
problem, not a Remedy problemcan you issue the same query in the user
tool...and then maybe get an sql log of the request and try it directly at
the DB?...I fully suspect you will find that it's a db problem and not an
api issue.

Subject: invalid relational operator exception from QualifierInfo

Hi,

I have a Java program which uses getListEntry(). I use a QualifierInfo
object to create the qualification for getListEntry. The qualification
looks like this:

  QualifierInfo qualifier = remedyConn.parseQualification(arForm,
'Associated Asset' = \atl01a\);

Which results in this exception:
 CreateRemedyTicket.getSchema ARExceptionERROR (552): Failure
during SQL operation to the database; ORA-00920: invalid relational
operator
 ERROR (552): Failure during SQL operation to the database;

Oddly, if I change the equal sign to LIKE the query works:

QualifierInfo qualifier = remedyConn.parseQualification
(arForm,'Associated Asset' LIKE \atl01a\); // works

I have other qualifiers for different fields on the same form in which use
the equal sign with no problem. E.g.:

QualifierInfo qualifier = remedyConn.parseQualification
(arForm,'Summary' = \System Down\); // works

The properties for the Summary and Associated Asset are the same with the
following two exceptions:

Entry Mode is Required for the Summary field (which works as expected) and
optional for the Associated Asset (which doesn't work).
Input Length is 254 for the Summary field and 0 for the Associated Asset
field.

I would appreciate any suggestions!

thanks in advance,

Licenses

2012-03-16 Thread Jim Manara
**
So I buy Fixed and Floating Licenses, sorry Named and Concurrent.I can obtain AR User and Separate Application Licenses. I can get these application licenses bundled or by the application. In today's world I do not have to purchase both User and Application licenses for any individual because the application license contains the User license. In an environment with COTS Applications and Custom Forms, I need AR User licenses for people who only work with the custom forms. I need Application licenses for those who work with the COTS Applications and who may or may not work with the custom forms. Now the User Form asks for License Type, Read, Fixed, Floating, Restricted Read. (OK named or concurrent)Then it asks for the Application License in a text field. Sorry for the simplified example:So person 1 is assigned a License Type Fixed and BMC Incident Mgmt FixedSo person 2 is assigned a License Type Floating and BMC Incident Mgmt FloatingSo person 3 is assigned a License Type Fixed and BMC Change Mgmt FloatingSo person 4 is assigned a License Type Floating and BMC Problem Mgmt FixedHow does the application identify how many licenses are remaining? Both of the Fixed and Floating variety as well as for each application.Jim Manara480-273-0934

Patrick,

You are right - nobody wants another tool.

Heck, I don't want another tool.

But thankfully - business can see past that restriction, or else, I am
afraid - we would all be using Microsoft Excel to manage Incidents,
Changes, CMDB, Word processing, etc...

So - given the right info and education - business does see past the one
tool approach.

So - I would propose to your boss --

Instead of asking - Would you like another tool?

Instead say:

How would you like to:
- minimize our changes to Remedy
- simplify our future upgrades
- build new forms and processes in business time not IT time
- minimize the risk introduced to the system when releasing new
forms/processes
- minimize the risk introduced to the system when changing forms/processes
- minimize training across the company to use the Request system
- minimize the training across IT to fulfill requests
- minimize license cost yet maximize existing investments
- drive fulfillment across the enterprise in real-time
- leverage open strategies for display
- leverage open strategies for fulfillment
- use the request management system from your mobile - without buying more
tools

the list goes on...

Also - throw in Kinetic Request won the award for Most innovative product
at WWRUG and then followed it up with Best support in the following year.

So -- propose that to your boss -- one tool vs (my list). A wise manager
would look into their options.

Unwise managers bury their head in poor policy.

The best licensing

ARERR 3377 (LDAP Errors) and Filter Error Handlers

2012-03-16 Thread Thad Esser
Hello,

We have an LDAP Vendor form that integrates with Active Directory. While
trying to add some error trapping, it seems that the errors from LDAP don't
trigger the ARS error handling of filters. I have a simple filter that
adds a user to the member attribute of an AD Group. It works fine and
has for years. Today, I added an error handler to that filter so that I
could gracefully deal with situations where the member add failed. To test
this, I am intentionally trying to add a user to a DN for which my LDAP
account doesn't have access. I do get this message in the arerror.log (and
on screen) so ARS does recognize it as an error:

The LDAP operation has failed : Insufficient access (LDAPERR 50)2098:
SecErr: DSID-03150A48, problem 4003 (INSUFF_ACCESS_RIGHTS), data 0 (ARERR
3377)

The filter log shows the set field processing on the member field, but
there is no indication of an error other than the last line:

   FLTR /* Fri Mar 16 2012 19:14:18.0717 */ Checking
TRG:ADG:UserDN_AddToGroup (999)
   FLTR-- Passed -- perform actions
   FLTR 0: Set Fields
   FLTR members (536870921) = CN= userinfo1^|^CN=
userinfo2^|^CN= userinfo3
   FLTR /* Fri Mar 16 2012 19:14:18.0795 */ End of filter processing
(phase 1) -- Operation - SET on TRG:Active Directory:Group - snip DN
   FLTR /* Fri Mar 16 2012 19:14:18.1717 */Canceled filter processing due
to error

I added an error message action to test the error handler, and it triggered
as expected:

   FLTR /* Fri Mar 16 2012 19:45:13.6116 */ Checking
TRG:ADG:UserDN_AddToGroup (999)
   FLTR-- Passed -- perform actions
   FLTR 0: Set Fields
   FLTR members (536870921) = CN= userinfo1^|^CN=
userinfo2^|^CN= userinfo3
   FLTR 1: Message
   FLTR test error message.
FLTR Error while performing filter action: Error 1
FLTR Filter TRG:ADG:UserDN_AddToGroup: Calling filter error
handler zzz:TempErrorHandler
   FLTR /* Fri Mar 16 2012 19:45:13.6276 */ Checking
zzz:TempErrorHandler (999)
   FLTR-- Passed -- perform actions
   FLTR 0: Set Fields
FLTR z1D_Char01 (536870922) = This is the error handler
handling the error.
FLTR Filter zzz:TempErrorHandler: Successfully handled filter
error
   FLTR Filter TRG:ADG:UserDN_AddToGroup
   FLTR /* Fri Mar 16 2012 19:45:13.6277 */ End of filter processing
(phase 1) -- Operation - SET on TRG:Active Directory:Group - snip DN
   FLTR /* Fri Mar 16 2012 19:45:13.7246 */Canceled filter processing due
to error

So, does anyone have any ideas on how I can get ARS to see the LDAP error
as an error?
Thanks,
Thad

Re: Wonder how many of these tales are true....

Define lonely and creepy :-).. If you mean deathly quiet, its actually
inviting.. I have been to a few places around South Jersey, and from that site,
they make Cape May to be the most haunted town in Jersey.. I actually liked
that town for its natural – almost untouched landscape.. Those little streams
and small waterfalls (I think its called Childs Fall) were pretty places..

Sinking sand is not as treacherous as it is made out to be. if you can swim in
water which is a whole lot less denser than sinking sand , you can ‘swim’ on
sinking sand.. The key here is swim – and not try to walk or run away.. you
literally lay down and crawl out of it as if you were swimming.. So unless
there is some deadly creature like an alligator or a crocodile around, there is
not much to worry about.. I had seen a show once on Discovery channel where
some expert said it’s the fear and myth around how dangerous sinking sand can
be, that makes most people panic and become victims of it..

I grew in South Jersey. I can’t vouch for any of these tales, but I can tell
you there’s over a million acres of pines trees sand called the “Pine
Barrens” in NJ.

The Pine Barrens are as beautiful, lonely creepy as it gets. Miles miles of
two lane roads with scrubby pine trees on either side. Every so often there’s a
sandy one lane trail off to one side or the other. Turn off onto one of these
roads. It just gets lonelier creepier. You might find a quarry but don’t get
too close – you could be up to your knees in sand still sinking before you
know it. You might see an old wreck of an abandoned car with bullet holes in
every square inch.

And then there are the remains of what looks like an animal carcass. Now try to
find your way back out to the main road.

The Pine Barrens is where the Jersey Devil is said to live. It was also an
episode of The Sopranos, the one where Paulie Christopher take a Russian
mobster into the woods (the Pine Barrens), end up getting lost have to spend
the night in an abandoned vehicle.

No wonder many of the places listed on the web page are in or around the Pine
Barrens.

Is there any truth to it??? Was it ever investigated? Or is it just a
widespread rumor?

I grew up in Raritan, NJ and the old librarian is the mother of 4 boys. No
wonder she is still moving around checking that things are the way they are
supposed to be. Like we do when we send test transactions through our systems.
 Thanks for the memories.

I tend to have an interest in ‘supernatural’ phenomenon's, and a random
search for haunted places in New Jersey yielded this result.. I really wonder
how many of these are really authentic claims.. My guess leans towards none..

Anybody living in any of these listed cities that may have heard or know
anything first hand about any of these listed sites???
