Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Tree And Portuguese Ancestry ..
If you can search for an obituary for your Joseph Silver, it may give a clue. That was a very useful source of information for my Azorean 2x great grandfather. It gave us his village and island in the Azores. It also told the story of how he came to Australia. You would need to know where he died and search the newspapers or contact the local historical group. They are always very helpful. My understanding is that some of the Azoreans who came to Australia and New Zealand were recruited onto American whaling ships. They were often shipwrecked as in my ancestors case or jumped ship, as I believe it was a hard life on these ships. You need to know the village or freguesia and island in the Azores. Then you can search the archives. Also consider doing DNA testing as Cheri has already suggested. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA and Azores
Ancestry uses trees for the "spot on" analysis. Imagine the poor person who has a poorly researched tree and everyone copies without verification? And they are on the wrong island(s)? People move around, so pinpointing a location is going to be close to impossible with DNA. My dad is 50% Azorean (his paternal grandparents came from there). Therefore, I am 25%. My mother has no Portuguese in her whatsoever. She has long lines in the U.S. and based on the surnames, she's heavy English, Irish, and Scot. [image: image.png] My dad does get readings from Africa, probably due to the Moors and all that history. His French may be misread stuff from the Roman Empire, such as the Franks. I find FTDNA's 33% Iberian really funny because I'm only 25%. Oh well, we'll see what the next update holds. In the meantime, I'm going to work my matches and figure out connections that I didn't have before. That's where the whole meat of this is at right now. The difference of DNA tests between FTDNA and Ancestry is impossible to understand.I traced a line very carefully. One brother used FTDNA, his sister used Ancestry. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Surname BONITO - Lomba da maia, Sao miguel
Can't help you with photos. But I may be able to help unblock where you are stuck in your line. You wrote "I have been researching my surname and have found through records 4 generations of Manuel Lourenco Bonito, my grandfather's, stuck at early 1800s into 1700s." Do you have a date and time for the earliest generation? From what I have, about ten offshoot lines, they all seem to lead back to Manoel Lourenco Bonito and Maria Isabel. They married circa 1832, but there is not an exact match for them in Lomba da Maia or Maia. So I suspect a name change or variance of some kind. Rob W, There is no way to give you any advise without me looking at your DNA page on FTDNA. I would be a lot of guesses and nothing concrete. Here are the join instructions: Log into the FTDNA page with the kit number and password. Across the top is says: myFTDNA, DNA Tests, ProjectsPoint at Projects. When the drop down menu appears, click "Join a project." If the Azores Islands appears on the top, click the link and scroll down to the JOIN button at the end. If the Azores Islands is not suggested, scroll down to where it says "Search by Surname" and type: azores. When Azores Islands appears, click the link and follow the directions. == My guess is that "Du Coyte" may be "do Couto." After you join the Azores DNA Project, I can tell you more. [AZORES-Genealogy] DNA and Azores
Hi One of my 2nd Great Grandfather's came to South Australia in 1848. Unfortunately most shipping lists of the time have"not survived" to use the official term. There are some Newspaper reports but they are notoriously unreliable and misspellings abound. He was born about 1808 and went by the name of Joseph Josephs which unfortunately was not his real name. His real name was supposed to be Du Coyte or something similar When one of his daughter's died the obituary said that her father fought in the Crimean war which is impossible of course because he was already in Australia before that war began. He may have fought in the Portuguese civil war as he would have been old enough. He probably came to Australia via England. Very hard to find a name when you don't know what name to look for? He was however Portuguese and spoke very poor English. I have had my DNA tested with Ancestry and uploaded my info To "My Heritage" FTDNA,Living DNA and Gedmatch. Ancestry does not recognize my Portuguese ancestry although it did originally, however "My Heritage" does!! I have been checking my Portugal matches on Ancestry and over 90% of them have an ancestor from the Azores within 3-4 generations. I don't know how common that is in the overall Portuguese population?? I do know that Joseph was suppose to have come from an island and had a brother that went to South America,Brazil?? I know this is a bit long winded but do you think it is reasonable to assume that Joseph came from the Azores? At least at this stage? I'm just looking for an opinion and as I have explained I have next to nothing to go on!!! Rob -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Azores Genealogy" group. Are you talking about mainland Portugal? You can try contacting Torre do Tombo in Lisbon. Also website familysearch.org has some records online. Also google Portugal genealogy to see if there are genealogist in one of those sites to help you but be prepared to pay for these services. I have been to Torre do Tombo and I believe most, if not all, their records are located there. They also charge a fee. Depending on what you are looking for, I would hire someone over there to do the research for you. That’s what I ended up doing years ago as I do not read or speak the language. “E” Sent from my iPhone > On Nov 25, 2019, at 4:34 PM, Anthony Silver > wrote: > > is there some sort of genealogy organization in Portugal that I can contact. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Azores Genealogy" group. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Tree And Portuguese Ancestry ..
Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) has allowed for volunteer group administrators to oversee projects. One was created for the Azores and I over see it. We have 2200-2300 members. Because we pool our DNA in a project it allows for us admins to observe patterns and clusters. Once we get the clusters going, we will be able to get a better idea of how long our DNA was in a location and help identify those with no idea where they came from (such as yourself). For those with fragmented DNA, we may be able to help them focus their research - they will have an idea of where to look. Also, there are tools for those in group projects. You can toggle on or off the comparing with others in the project vs. the whole FTDNA database. Also, as our endogamy starts to take shape, we will be able to get a better handle on that as well. The 1850s emigration out of the Azores had no photos or portraits. You have a name and a general date. You need a place. Unless another Australian has an idea, you'll have to turn to DNA and see where your matches are researching. Hi Anthony, I did not see a Jose Silva or Silveira on the Water Lily that went to Australia in 1853 (I think). You'll have to use Australian sources to track him there, see if he naturalized, if his obituary said anything, etc. I'm sure those in Australia who have traced their Azorean ancestor may be able to help. You can use DNA in conjunction with the paper trail too. We've got over 2200-2300 people in the Azores DNA Project on Family Tree DNA. They are most likely going to have another sale beginning on Friday to kick off the holiday season. I'll post that announcement to the list on Friday. You'll want to test the oldest family member on that side. So if you have a parent or aunt/uncle, test them first. If there is no one living except you, then test yourself. I'll keep the list posted, Cheri Mello Listowner, Azores-Gen Researching: São Miguel island: Vila Franca, Ponta Garca, Ribeira Quente, Ribeira das Tainhas, Achada On Mon, Nov 25, 2019 at 3:03 PM Anthony Silver wrote: > well, the name of my grandfather, 5 or 6 generations ago, is Joseph > Silver, born somewhere in the azores, around 1836. > he that's about all I know. > he took a ship, and came to Australia, from 1850 something. > the info I have is quite limited. > > On Monday, November 25, 2019 at 12:14:33 PM UTC+11, Anthony Silver wrote: >> >> hello, i'm tracing ancestry, back to Portugal. >> >> the info I have of one particular person is quite limited. >> >> does anyone have any suggestions or ideas as to where I can find info >> online ??? >> >> one resource I have looked at is marinersandships.com.au >> >> >> -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "Azores Genealogy" group. > To unsubscribe from this group and stop receiving emails from it, send an > email to azores+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. > To view this discussion on the web visit > https://groups.google.com/d/msgid/azores/e6c29dd0-091e-4768-8b26-4067acc550d7%40googlegroups.com > <https://groups.google.com/d/msgid/azores/e6c29dd0-091e-4768-8b26-4067acc550d7%40googlegroups.com?utm_medium=email_source=footer> > . > -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Azores Genealogy" group. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Surname BONITO - Lomba da maia, Sao miguel
Dear Ana and JR, It is my understanding also that Bonito started out a nickname. My father’s baptism record lists him as Eduardo Couto Bonito, and my grandfather is listed on his marriage record as João do Couto Bonito. My family dropped the Bonito when they came to the U.S. I would be interested to know if either of you have Couto Bonitos in your files, especially from Arrifes, Relva, or São José. Nancy P.S. I believe there is also a family called Couto Feio, which suggests that the nickname has nothing to do with fish. > On Nov 25, 2019, at 10:12 AM, JR wrote: > > If I may, who was Manuel Lourenco Bonito married to? Hi Ana, The Azores government digitized what was available to them. For the island of Sao Miguel, that was up to 1905. After 1905, you have to use the Civil Registry for Ribeira Grande. If you are still a Portuguese citizen, you may be able to order the records online, provided you have a name and an exact date. I had to get a new computer and I no longer have the URL. Someone here on this list will have it. The Azores government digitized from 1905 going back to the beginning of the records. Every freguesia is different with their start dates. Use Tombo.pt to see how far back your freguesia goes and what was digitized. What you see on the Azores government site (the CCA) by going through Tombo.pt is all that exists. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Surname BONITO - Lomba da maia, Sao miguel
Hi Ana, If you use the group's search tab and type "Manuel Lourenço Bonito" you'll find that there's at least one thread about this. If you google the same "Manuel Lourenço Bonito" (always between "") you'll find the name referend in some trees, specially a big tree on Geneanet (the *tavaressilva* tree), so take a look. You may also find some Bonito's in some worldgenweb indexes. Also follow the path through the CCA records like Cheri suggested, and from there you might find the Bonito track line again. Hi Ana, Photography didn't begin to become affordable until the late 1800s onwards. You won't find any photos for the early 1800s into 1700s. The Azores government digitized their records and they are online. It is much easier to access them through tombo.pt. You can type "lomba da maia" in the left column and see what is available. [AZORES-Genealogy] Grandparents Naturalization Application Massachusetts
Elaine, I am going to guess that your grandparents applied for Citizenship around the 1935-1940 time period. As such they would have applied to the Bristol County District Court which is in Taunton, MA. The records from there are held in the Massachusetts State Archives located near the JFK Library in Boston which is actually near Dorchester. I found several of my greats paperwork there. I seem to recall they had the information on microfilm at the time and I could make copies of the images. Because I went there I was able to do the searching myself and the staff was very helpful. I don't know what the policy is on mail requests but this web site may help : www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcres/residx.htm <http://www.sec.state.ma.us/arc/arcres/residx.htm> Some time after WWII the process for naturalization was taken by the US District Courts. The records of naturalization for that period are kept in the national archives. For Massachusetts that would be the one located in Waltham. I have been there and I first had to look on microfilm for the record I wanted then request to look at it. I took about a hour for them to get it then I was able to look at the original in a viewing room and get a copy made. As I recall it only cost around 50 cents for the copies. Once again the staff there was very helpful. Good luck in your search. I found my grandfather's declaration on Ancestry, and sent in for information for both grandparents only to find out that the USCIS had nothing they could find. It was recommended I try the state judicial archives, and sent them a request with money and never heard back from them on those records. If the Federal Archives have them in Waltham, that would be good to know. I did ask the state archives in Dorchester whether they had anything, and they said I could try and submit a request and they'd do a search, but I haven't gone that route yet. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Re: Family Tree DNA's (American) Thanksgiving Sale (through Nov. 28)
I've been getting the message that FTDNA is down for maintenance. The $99 was a new deal, perhaps? When I find out, I will post here. The mtDNA is different than the Family Finder test. The mtDNA traces your mother's mother's mother's line - all women all the way back. Mitochondria mutate very, very slowly. Once the mtDNA database reaches critical mass, about half of the matches will be within a genealogical time frame (or so is the current thinking). So you can test, get your haplogroup, the cute little video, and then play wait and see. FamilyFinder covers ALL lines, back about 200 years from the birth of the testee. Most people now get lots of matches that they are able to work. Sometimes you can play the mtDNA and the Family Finder off of each other. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Urzelina cemetary
Since the Azores are islands, it would be impossible to have every single body since the 1640s be interred in a grave. So they would inter a body for 7 years and after that, the remains would be dug up and the bones placed in an ossuary. For some families today who want their relative there longer than 7 years, they pay a fee (I guess it is like paying rent) and the remains stay as long as the fee is paid. So for the 1830s and 1850s, those people's bones are in the ossuary in the cemetery in Urzelina. [AZORES-Genealogy] Urzelina cemetary
Hi guys, looking for general information due to conflicting stories. The church Sao Mateus in Urzelina was built in 1822 to replace the old church that was destroyed in a volcanic eruption. (you can still find the steeple on display in town). The parish cemetary was next to this church. The first burial took place on August <https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/28_de_Agosto>28, 1837. In 1859 <https://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/1859> there were those who gave land to a more appropriate cemetery location, but the former continued to serve. Where were parishioners etc buried before that? What happened to the bodies/graves of those that were built in the churchyard? It's my understanding they extended the church and built over the old cemetery after exclusively using the new one. I need help with Manuel's paternal grandparents - are they Mathias De Souza Coelho and Antonia De?. ( is that de Jesus?).His maternal grandparents are Joao Pavao and ( who is the grandmother? ) I am unable to decipher her first or last name. 13th of March; note the e at end of treze. Note the father is from Bretanha and the mother, Antonia Jacintha is from Ginetes. Godfather is o tio (uncle), Joao Pavao e sua mulher Gertrudes de Jesus. So Joao Pavao is the brother of Antonia Jacinta. JR On Wednesday, November 20, 2019 at 10:46:35 PM UTC-5, Cheri Mello wrote: > > There's 3 Manuels on that page. It even gave what kind of planes they will use(I believe Azores airlines uses these types of aircraft also). Look closely. TAP is marketing flights that is it not actually operating. For example, TAP offers a flight from San Francisco to Ponta Delgada, but it's on JetBlue SFO-BOS and then over to PDL. Guess which infamous airline owned by the Azorean government is operating the flight to PDL? Buying the ticket through TAP but still flying on Azores Airlines (aka SATA), is no cakewalk. Brian, Let me know if you are interested in sharing information. My family line goes back to Guadalupe, Graciosa too. Mainly Victoria, but Praia is also in the mix. Feel free to email directly. I also owe a lot to Bill Seidler for his help in translating records. Family names: Espional, Silva, Vasconcellos, Conde, and Bettencourt. My family, mostly, comes from Sao Jorge, Graciosa, and Terceira to a lesser extent. I got extremely lucky with my grandfather's line on my mom's side and was able to go back as far as I reliable could, which was prior to 900CE (Noronha). His wife is a Cordeiro, and we have that line back to 1700 or so, back to Guadalupe/Praia Graciosa, to Manuel Espinola De Mendonca. My family primarily lived in Praia, Graciosa - Urzelina Sao Jorge - and Angra I owe a great deal to Bill Seidler. I started our tree back in 2008, but ran into a lot of issues in consistency, so I stopped until two years ago. He was able to fill in a lot of blanks for me that he was able to find with the advent of the records being made available on the internet. I was able to pay him back in a wealth of family photos. I've restored old images for a number of years, including as far back as the first photographs on the islands. To date I have around 100 from my family line alone. I also have a lot of paperwork and low print number books etc that are hard to find. Glad I found this. Gracias! [AZORES-Genealogy] Help please with 1858 Baptismal Record

I can deduce that Manuel, (my great grandfather ) was the legitimate son of Manuel de Souza Coelho and Antonio Jacintha. It appears he was born on the 26th of February 1858 and baptized on the 13th ( or is 3rd ) of March in the same year. I need help with Manuel's paternal grandparents - are they Mathias De Souza Coelho and Antonia De?. ( is that de Jesus?). His maternal grandparents are Joao Pavao and ( who is the grandmother? ) I am unable to decipher her first or last name. Thanking everyone in advance. Re: [AZORES-Genealogy] Huge increase in price for searching U.S. Naturalization records
Cheri I am reading the cost differently. The index search is $240 and Record Request is $368. If you do both of them that is $608. It was hard enough to pay $65 for the index search and then to maybe not get anything. Is this index supposed to be for all naturalizations no matter what state they were done in That is a terrible cost. I agree with Rosemarie it should be under the Freedom of Info Act.
