Re: [BVARC] Satellites -- 2m -- 70cm -- antennas

2024-05-12 Thread Bruce via BVARC
I too used a Pryme AL-800 antenna for a long time. Then I graduated to
an Arrow antenna. Much easier than the AL-800. Your choice of using an
Arrow without a built-in diplexer which is good for about 10 watts or
use your own duplexer or use two individual HT's or radios. I have done
it all three ways. I find the two radios to be a bit easier although you
have to have some way of either holding them or placing them where you
can change the frequency as you correct for Doppler.

If you would like a primer on what all the pieces of a Keplerian element
are and how they function, I can email you a piece I wrote back in the
90's.

As I go down the path of satalites and antennas, I have now realized
how much I really don't have a clue.

The things I need to learn about are :
1) Yagis -- how they work beyond the normal parts and basic point and
listen.
2) satalites and orbits and solar winds and solar interference in
general and what it takes to track beyond software
3) up and down links -- beyond the 2m and 70cm frequency and how
Doppler and angle effects.

Basically -- looks to me that the magic smoke we work to keep in
electronics is also in the antenna.

Someone know where I can start to figure this stuff out. I am almost
to the point of calling Mr Daniel and CPT Jack .

Thank you for help in advance.

[BVARC] Hamfest and some old vintage magazines

2024-03-01 Thread Bruce via BVARC
When my good friend, Andy, W5ACM, became a silent key, I received all
his old QST, QEX, 73 and Byte magazines to find them a good home. I have
5 large boxes of them. I was thinking of taking them to the hamfest but
that is a lot of heavy lifting and moving.

If there are some of you that would like a box or two or all of them,
then I will be happy to meet you there and simply transfer them from car
to car/truck. Or I can meet you around town somewhere.

Let me know.

Understandable. That is why I have unlimited data on my cell phone so

We went to VoIP with MagicJack a long time ago when they first

[BVARC] DXCC Card Checker

2023-05-31 Thread Bruce via BVARC
Many of you might not know, BVARC nominated me back in 1994 to be a WAS
and VUCC card checker. There was no one in the area doing it. At the
time, to be a DXCC card checker, you had to be nominated by a contest
club. Things have changed and today I became a DXCC card checker as
well. Since I retired and moved out of Houston, I have not been able to
attend but a few of the BVARC meetings. However, I can still meet up
with you if you need your cards checked on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday.
It also gives me another reason to attend the Hamfest in March each year.

into a folder other than the default path. But that’s a reach on my part.

Other than that, you might email David directly, as he’s pretty good
about responding. But keep in mind he’s in Europe, and it may not be
till morning before he sees the message.

All the best,

Hello. Ive never really been too big into DMR, but I have a DVMega
usb dongle (actually forgot I had it to tell you the truth) and Im
trying to install BlueDV on a windows 10 box. Has anyone
successfully installed this app on win10? Im admin of my box but I
keep getting install failure because the msi installer cannot
write a temp file to my documents folder. Curious if anyone knows
a work around on this.

It works because electrons can flow through the wire and radiate. They

Re: [BVARC] Ham Radio Deluxe - Terrible Customer Service!

2023-03-21 Thread Bruce via BVARC
I had a similar issue with them some 4-5-6 years ago. I tried the demo
and it would never get to where you could enter anything. The screen was
there but you could not log anything in Demo mode. They told me to
resolve the issue reformat my hard drive and reinstall windows. It
should work then. Yah right, not a chance. I have since migrated to a
new computer a few months ago and all my software is still working just
fine. I still use PDA's Logic which I have used since 1993, of course
there have been many upgrades since then.

All,

I purchased Ham Radio Deluxe on 3/10/2023. I did a trial back in 2021
when I was a new ham and didn’t purchase then, so was no longer
eligible for a trial. Now that I am into FT-8, I was looking for a
way to control the DT-G (digital gain) on my Yeasu FT-991A.

On the website, the first statement listed is: “Rig Control with full
command support for Yaesu, ICOM, Kenwood, Elecraft, Ten-Tec,
FlexRadio, and more”. There is no asterisk directing you to a listing
of things that cannot be controlled. So based on the advertising, I
assume full control of my rig.

Within the same day of purchase, I try to find how to control DT-G,
reach out to their technical support, am told the software cannot do
it, and ask for a refund. _On the same day of purchase._

Dr. Michael (Mike) Carper, VK4EIE (WA9PIE), the owner, starts
responding to my support requests and refuses to give me a refund. At
first, he tells me with FT-8, I shouldn’t need to be changing DT-G so
I don’t need a refund. My position is, regardless of whether I should
or shouldn’t need to do that, I bought the software just to do that,
and it cannot.

He then proceeds to take the position that there is nothing wrong
with his advertising nor software and thus refuses a refund. He then
proceeds to insult me with statements like the following quote: “We
also cannot control your Mr. Coffee or smart home devices through the
FT-991A. But that's due to the same exact reason - there's no command
in the FT-991A command set for a Mr. Coffee or smart home devices.”

So much for customer satisfaction!! I am not trying to take advantage
of him nor get something for free – I tried the software in one day
and asked for a refund and he could have disabled my license key then.

I’ve heard there were issues with this company before and I can
clearly state I would never do business with this company again given
the customer service I have experienced.

[BVARC] Tips on working an astronaut on the ISS

2023-02-22 Thread Bruce via BVARC
This was recently posted on the AMSAT-BB. Hope it helps make your
chances of a QSO with the ISS a success.

73...bruce

===

Hi all,  As has been posted numerous times by me to the AMSAT-BB, here
are some tips for making a general contact with the ISS.  Please review
the possible contact times below, there will be no contact if the crew
isn't awake but happens to be over your location. There definitely will
be no contact if the ISS is not over your location when you elect to
try.  Make sure your orbital prediction software has the latest Kep data
and that the computer clocks are synched to a time standard. Here is
what I post with every one of my postings to the AMSAT-BB.

*

Comments on making general contacts

I have been seeing a lot of traffic on Facebook and I suspect on other
social media sites with people asking why they are not hearing the crew
make general contacts.  First off the crew is very busy on the ISS and
they simply may not have the time to just pick up the microphone and
talk.  Also, one needs to be aware of their normal daily schedule.  I
have listed below the constraints that we at ARISS have to follow in
order to schedule the school contacts.  Hopefully this will help you
better schedule your opportunities.

Typical daily schedule

Wakeup to Workday start= 1.5 hours

Workday start to Workday end=12 hours

Workday end to Sleep= 2 hours

Sleep to wakeup= 8.5 hours

The crew's usual waking period is 0730 - 1930 UTC. The most common times
to find a crew member making casual periods are about one hour after
waking and before sleeping, when they have personal time. They're
usually free most of the weekend, as well.

SSTV events are not that often.  So please check out
https://www.ariss.org/ for the latest information or watch for the ARISS
announcements.

And don’t forget that the packet system is active.

As always, if there is an EVA, a docking, or an undocking; the ARISS
radios are turned off as part of the safety protocol.

The latest information on the operation mode can be found at
https://www.ariss.org/current-status-of-iss-stations.html

The latest list of frequencies in use can be found at
https://www.ariss.org/contact-the-iss.html
 *

We at ARISS can not make a crew member make general contacts.  We have
sometimes suggested that someone might want to be on the air for
something like Field Day or Jamboree on the Air, but again we have
limits.  We work with the ISS planners to get the school contacts
scheduled as those contacts are actually during scheduled time off that
gets made up later in the day.  Some of the crew members played ham
radio on earth many times and are wanting to make general contacts;
others may have gotten their license just so that they could have
contacts with the various schools under the ARISS program and might not
want to make general contacts.

Contrary to one comment I have seen, they are not just active over
Europe.  It just depends on their work schedule, the orbital track, time
of day, and many other factors.  As shown above for the time
constraints, this means that a contact might be possible from
07:30-08:30 UTC and 18:30-19:30 UTC.  If you are in an area that is
pretty sparse and the orbital track and possible contact times all fit,
then by all means give a call to the ISS.  You just never know what
might happen.

So the only thing we can suggest is to listen and if they are on the
radio, then go for it.  In the meantime, the cross-band repeater is
pretty active.   You just never know if a crew member hears a lot of
chatter on the cross-band and decides to pickup the microphone and join
the fun.

One of the ARISS mentors

Re: [BVARC] Look at this scam I got texted

2022-09-12 Thread Bruce via BVARC
I get these all the time from Nigeria. Take a look at the headers. You
will find a time offset of the original email. You will find it is the
Nigerian timezone. I once had someone try to nail me to send gift cards
to the president of another organization. Of course he was a good friend
of mine and we were talking on the phone when I received the email scam.
So, I started a scam back. I started asking him/her all kinds of
questions and then finished after a back and forth for a bit "Why
didn't you ask me to get these for you when we were sitting on the sofa?
We live in the same house."  Not true of course, but bam, scammer was
gone. It was fun.

Now, I am the president of that organization and some of my people get
those messages that I need gift cards. They know it cannot be as it
would have to be approved by the board to spend that kind of money.

Re: [BVARC] HELP WANTED: Apply within...

2022-08-21 Thread Bruce via BVARC
Those are the same issues all volunteer organizations face. I belong to
one organization that we have a monthly meeting and provide lunch to our
members. That does not help. We then instituted an attendance pot, $50 a
month except for the month we have an annual conference we go to. You
have to be in attendance to win the $50 and if you are not, the pot the
following month increases by another $50. By our Christmas dinner which
is for all members plus a guest for free, if no one has won the pot it
will be won by someone at the dinner.

Neither ventures have increased our membership nor our attendance at the
meetings or the Christmas dinner.

Back when I was president of BVARC in 1999, we faced the same issues and
we had hot dogs and soft drinks for the members prior to the monthly
meetings. Did not really increase the attendance at the meetings other
than everyone was happy for the meal.

It is what it is.

Yes, the radio has a USB port. However, it is being used by my
controller for Doppler and logging. Thanks for the suggestion, I did see
that on my google search. I have the radio setup like he did for WSJT
however, nothing happens when I try to use Winlink. Maybe for WSJT it is
fine, don't know as I do not have an HF antenna to test it. Just hate
having to use a 1994 or 1995 Kantronics becuase modern day stuff was
designed to work with old antique stuff. There are no selections in
Winlink for anything that is modern. Such as using my USB port or the
SignaLink. Guess I know why I gave the SignaLink away many years ago
after trying to get it to work.

*Re: Requesting Permission For a Field Trip To Your Amateur Radio Station*

Respected Sir/Madam,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter with a humble
request to allow our scout troops (1993-Girls and 993-Boys) to visit
your Amateur Radio Station.

We are looking at a Saturday, Sept 17 or 24, 2022 (depending on your
availability).

Time: Anytime from 10 am to 4 pm

My name is Philip Soneye, an assistant Scoutmaster with the above
troops, We are a member of Boy Scouts of America and our troops are
located at 2201 S Dairy Ashford Rd, Houston, TX, 77077

We are preparing our troops to participate in the world’s largest radio
Scouting event called Jamboree on the Air. This will allows our Scouts
to connect to other Scouts from around the world. The event is open to
Scouts around the world, enabling young people to connect and
communicate with each other using the Internet and amateur radio. You
can read more about this at https://www.jotajoti.info/

We thought it is important to prepare our boys/girls for this great
event by arranging a small field trip to your Radio Station, to learn
how to build a radio receiver, radio waves, their propagation, and how
Amateur Radio works.

We did some research online, we are inspired by your Amateur Radio
Station, we thought our Scout troops will benefit more from this in
checking off the requirement for their Citizenship in the World merit
badge and International Spirit Award. We are sure your team would help
them understand how the whole process works and give them a unique
experience in preparing for Jamboree on the Air 2022.

You may contact me at the email provided below. I shall be looking
forward to your positive response. Thank you.

Best Regards,

*Philip Soneye*

I did use ARRL insurance when I first joined and decided not to duplicate

month since I did in fact Update my operating system about the same time as the
September 6 Lightning storms.

Well, as a goose chase would ensue, it turns out that today Yaesu technical
support has verified that my microprocessor is now faulty for the bits that
control the CAT control. The tech rep said that was major problem and a 600$
board + labor to repair.

It is also good to note that I had recently installed lots of lightning
arresting solutions, and I still got zapped.

Fortunately for me, I have been a ARRL insurance payee for many years. Now I am
entering a claim for the radio, and things appear to be promising.
So now I think I'll upgrade a bit with the claim and some of my own money.
I say all this to let the newcomers know that the 1$ for every 10$ of equipment
value ARRL charges is a GREAT deal. You should do it.
This is only the 2nd time in my 40 years of HAM to have a problem. The 1st
being when punks bashed my car window right out in front of my house and stole
my remote control head for the radio under the seat. The bad part was neither
they nor I had a workable system afterwards. :-(

73s and I'll talk Hf on the other side of this thing.

Re: [BVARC] OT: Memory upgrade in Dell Latitude 5490

2021-08-29 Thread Bruce via BVARC
Back in my younger days, I did onsite warranty for Dell. Was certified on
virtually everything they made at the time, tape drives, servers, desktops and
laptops. Had a ball. Some repairs took almost no time and others were quite
involved. You learned where all the screws went and I just put them all in a
little cup.

Customer almost always watched. Would be really funny to watch them try and do
it later.

is when I click on log QSO, it does not put the QSO in the programs

Re: [BVARC] Power Supply

2021-08-09 Thread Bruce via BVARC
I bought a small Astron RS-20A when I was first licensed in 1993 and
keep it now for taking to field day or portable. I have been using an
Astron RS-35A since around 1995 when I got into HF and was using 2
radios. It has enough power for an HF radio, satellite radio, the TNC,
and another 2m radio. I also power the ICOM CIT level converter and the
Yaesu rotor control interface for tracking satellites. Plenty of power
and has run for many years without a hiccup. I have it plugged into a
Wemo switch which allows me to turn the power on when I am not at home
and also turn the power off when I stop operating and sometimes forget
to kill the power to the power supply.

I have been very happy with the Astron products in fact, I never have to
worry about them. They are like a Timex, they just keep on ticking. Okay
for the young ones here that do not know what a Timex is ;-), like an
Eveready Bunny that never stops.

Re: [BVARC] Icom 9700 D-star setting issues

2021-08-06 Thread Bruce via BVARC
I am to far away from it to get into 147.100. I just tried 147.58
simplex repeater closer to me (16 miles vs 32 miles). Nothing there.
If the repeater is working, you tune to the frequency, make sure you
have pressed the DUP button to either have an offset or simplex. Then
press the DF/DR button. It will say "No Repeater" if there is not one to
connect to on that frequency. That's it.

Yes,

Go to this page at the ARRL
http://www.arrl.org/online-dxcc-application

Complete your online application for the DXCC cards you have.
Then take the form with the cards to a DXCC card checker
They will check your cards, return the cards to you and send the paper
sheet to the ARRL.

The ARRL will add those DXCC entities to your LoTW account

I am sure it is not an issue with the reflector, but is likely on my receiving

not like the BVARC naming protocol.
For example, I saw the notice about this antenna email pop up on my phone when
it was first posted, but somehow this or none of the emails showed up in my
actual email until over 2 hours later, and then they all showed up at once.
This is weird, but I have noticed delays before in receiving the full emails
from the reflector.
To be clear, all I received was the top of the emails in a pop-up, but I did
not receive the whole emails until hours later.
I have checked with Consumer Cellular and with Norton Utilities, but no luck
with them.
Has anyone else has experienced similar email delays?

Re: [BVARC] backup power plan

2021-05-04 Thread Bruce via BVARC
Take a look at Tesla. Their solar is actually shingles. You get solar
shingles where you need them and glass shingles elsewhere. They do the entire
roof. The entire roof looks the same instead of the panels up there. I have a
code that gets you a few bucks if you want to do it.

this nuance to us when we had them by. We did not purchase, but at the time it
was based on other issues. If the company is around at that time, it is likely
that they will try to sell you upgraded panels. And, so it goes… Does anyone
know what the facts are regarding this.

Re: [BVARC] backup power plan

2021-05-03 Thread Bruce via BVARC
My generac starts in about 10 seconds of power outage. Some times, the
TV and surround sound do not even go out. Then it stays on until power
has been restored for at least 30 seconds. It will run for about 3-5
minutes after that to cool down and then shut off.

The “Sweet Spot” on backup generators is at 9000 to 13000 watt, where

The Generac system is about convenience. It will auto start after
about 10 minutes (setup) of power outage.  Most modern homes in the
south require several tens of thousands of watts generator to be truly
whole house, and they are very expensive.

I have a unit with a 10KW generator which runs MOST of the house with
a manual transfer switch.  I go to the generator shed, plug in the

generator to the external circuit, use the electric start to run the
generator for 2-5 minutes to get it warm, then switch the manual
switch in the house and well house.  It continues to run until I
reverse the process.

It cost about $1200 including the 50 amp transfer switch.  I have a
portable 8000 btu air conditioner, which has a 6inch hose to run out
the window, which will de-humidify and cool the living and sleeping
areas downstairs.

Most modern generators of this size will run dual fuel, including
gasoline with an option of Natural or Propane Gas.

When we moved here 32 years ago, the fort bend county area had lots of
power outages.  We only have 3 or 4 a year now.

The Big systems do run 20-40 thousand dollars, which is rather a lot
for the convenience during those few outages.

By the way most electrical contractors can put together a hybrid
system with a Generac controller for convenience, and a medium sized
dual fuel 10KW generator with the electronics for automatic start/stop
and switching to generator/mains.

I recently made many calls and talked to many vendors to determine the
best backup power plan. I was hoping that solar plus battery would not
only provide power during an outage but would also always provide power.

My conclusion was that whole home backup generator is still the only
cost reasonable option. That will cost you $10-15k (but they are in
short supply and you likely won’t get until November) whereas solar
plus battery is more like $50k. I was even told by one solar company
that when the power is out, the solar panels get shut down so as not
to push electricity back to the grid so they don’t generate at all
when the grid is down. So for a long outage all you have is the
battery and no ongoing solar generation.

Deer Park 3 years ago, I need power for CPAP breathing machine at

night. So here it's a MEDICAL ISSUE.

Alternative would be SOLAR CELLS (GENERAC HAS THESE with Battery
Power packs that typically are installed in a garage for use when
power fails at night, or during storms.).

Those who've followed the PBS "This Old House" has seen similar
systems installed in major house remodeling over the years.

Re: [BVARC] A Thank You to John Stratton, ARRL West Gulf Division Director

2021-04-05 Thread Bruce via BVARC
e cost of
their generator. That is what does not add up for me.

4kW = $250 at Home Depot

17kW=$10,000 from Generac

Looking at the chart below; from Hiller, if you want A/C
included, it is going to take that much power.

If this is not critical, there another option could be considered:

A whole-house unit would be nice to have, but a Generac would
cost about $120+/mo for four years. The small 4kW portable
generator I bought would be paid for in about 2 months at that
rate.

If you have gas heat, you can run the fan with the smaller
unit. In this option you can buy all the emergency generating
power you need for the cost of the 4kW generator I bought at
Home Depot for around $250. Add a SPDT switch to the fan and
wiring for around $100 and the total cost is about $350.

It does not have to be Generac or nothing. Even if I had the
cash, I don’t know if I could justify the very high $/kW. I
would prefer a few more vacations.

I would have been very comfortable if I had just been able to
    run the heater fan.

I am reaching out for ideas on a radio issue. I have installed an IC-745 Icom

switching power supply, which is located right next to the radio. The antenna
is under some high power-lines with the long leg 90 degrees to the power-lines.
I used my nanoVNA to study the band SWR response, and everything looks
reasonable, though some small adjustments may need to be made. Nothing is
grounded as yet.

Here’s my problem. I am only attempting to receive at this time and I get
consistent QRM white noise across all bands to the point where I can barely
pick out some voices, etc.

I am confident that the antenna is properly connected due to my antenna study.
I don’t believe the power lines are an issue, since the problem would likely be
more isolated show up as birdies at certain frequencies.
The radio settings seem to all be correct according to the manual.
Lack of grounding, but again the white noise is generally consistant across the
spectrum. Still, this could be the problem.
I have turned off my computer, so there no QRM from its power supply.
It does not help to have the switching power supply right next to the radio,
but other users give good reports on this model and no QRM issues are mentioned.
I tried the radio at different times of the day on 20-m voice band, with the
same noisy result.
It could be the net result of a large number of small device transformers, but
I doubt it.
I turned off the wifi, and still no change.

Hmm… I am a little stumped. Any thoughts or ideas? Personal experiences?

Re: [BVARC] Seeking two police scanners

2021-01-24 Thread Bruce via BVARC
The voice clipping is normal on 800/900 Mhz police radios weather you listen
over the internet, scanner or an actual Motorola radio. It is because the
audio is sent in short packets digitally and then decoded at the other end.

may decided that’s as much as we need.

I do find the audio slightly clipped sounding. It’s not garbled or covered by
static at all, but it doesn’t sound like the full sine wave of the voices. I’m
not certain if that’s a very accurate way to describe it. It’s an unusual
“distortion”, and not enough to prevent it being useful, but enough to make me
wonder if physical radios would be clearer. I’ll have to get in front of one
for a demo to find out.

Anyway, thanks, Larry Riendeau. We are certainly getting plenty of good out of
Broadcastify.

Re: [BVARC] OT: Cable modem and router recommendations

2020-10-12 Thread Bruce via BVARC
That is why when I lived in Houston I used one provider for tv and another for
data. When you use only one provider, most of your bandwidth goes to data and
tv gets what is left. Because the tv is highly compressed the picture always
looked terrible with one provider. When I split services I got gorgeous tv and
no issues with my data.

Allen,

Welcome to the club! Comcast has had problems recently with data dropouts and
delays.

I have had issues with my remotes for about three months. have swapped out
EVERYTHING at both ends but the problem still persists. So, I am convinced that
the quality of the Internet service is the culprit. My CW has been getting
corrupted when I use N1MM to send CW to my ranch rig. I can listen in on my
home rig on what is being transmitted. However, when Chris, N8AI, connects to
it, he has no problems. He can ragchew either with a paddle or a CW engine and
no dropouts.

About a year ago, Chris, N8AI, was getting into data drops with his Xfinity
service. When you run speedtest, the service is in excess of 50 mbps. But, he
was still getting problems. One problem was data drops. It was fixed by running
a direct cable to the router rather than going with wifi connection. The second
problem may have been related to certain settings in the Xfinity routers that
channel more speed to streaming video than to standard data use like we need
for our rigs. I believe that someone at the top engineering level must have put
Chris's connection at a higher priority to get away from data drops.

I used to run my remote station with less than 1 Mbs data rates. Now, even with
15 Mbs, I have data being corrupted. Instead of sending K0NM, I have heard
K9MT, K0MT, etc. I have reached the point where I am totally frustrated. So, if
anyone comes up with an answer, please let me know.

Re: [BVARC] ARMG -- June Program -- Tomorrow night on Zoom

2020-06-22 Thread Bruce via BVARC
I have a Windows PC. Tried to load DXlab one day to see how it works.
Loaded up but never ran, could not do anything. Their tech support said
to reformat my hard drive, install Windows and then install their
program. If their software has to run on a clean PC without anything
else, that was not the software for me. Although I know there are many
using it, just did not workout for me.

I have used PDA's Logic since, well, since about 1993. Have gone through
many iterations and upgrades. Never hurts to see what other packages can
do. Maybe I would have found a neat feature that I really liked. Never
know.

will be operating 1D. That is a lot of QSO’s for no points. It may be

I have written many times on the subject of new ops to satellite. Many for the
ARRL audio news. I have done APRS a few times. Not my cup of tea. Never tried
to listen to weather satellites. FM, SSB/CW satellites I enjoy. His writings
on working an FM satellite is good. My only suggestion is that if you change
your step from 10 to 5 or 2.5 you will hear more the smaller the step.
Satellite radios, Kenwood, Yaesu and Icom have 1 hz steps allowing you to hear
the most during a pass.

Re: [BVARC] Ham License Plates

2019-11-15 Thread Bruce via BVARC

As for the wording on the copythe application says...
"You must submit a copy of your Mobile Amateur Radio License issued
under guidelines set by the

Federal Communications Commission (FCC) with this application."

Nothing in that statement says true copy, certified copy or anything
like that. I have always made a copy of my license and turned it in. You
can always ask them to send it to the state and let them decide if it is
valid.

The form says...
"You may obtain plates for more than one vehicle titled in your name
that is equipped with mobile amateur radio equipment. License plates
will be issued with the same official amateur call letters to each
vehicle registered by the same owner."

There is actually no limit to the number. It used to say on the form 6
vehicles, that has been removed. I have had 4 in days past. Now, only
two vehicles with them.

The interesting thing is that most officers do not know how to read the
return on the tag. They assume that the first listing is the most
current vehicle with the plate. Some see a list of multiple vehicles and
are confused. I received a warning ticket once while driving the blue
vehicle and the description they grabbed from the return was for the tan
vehicle. Had it been a real ticket, would have easily got out of it as
the vehicle was not that which I would have been ticketed in. After all
is said and done, I would get out of the vehicle and take a picture of
my car with the DPS or police car in the background. Picture is worth a
thousand words ;-).

Once I was stopped in Houston by HPD. I pulled over, the officer walked
up to me (I never met him or had seen him before), he said "sorry, did
not realize who you were, have a nice day and walked back to his car".
To this day, I am still puzzled by that stop. Only thing I could figure
is that he saw 3-4 cars with the same plate listed on the return after
he stopped me and figured I must be important. LOL

By the way should you also be a handicapped ham, you can get the
plates with the handicap symbol on them by also attaching form VTR-214.

You can  have up to three sets of plates with your call. For me I have
my van, my camper and my 4x8 utility trailer.  The fun comes at the Ez
tag store, their soft ware won't handle three cars with the same tag,
not even two.  They start off with this can't be.  After talking to
several levels of supervisors and inspecting my car in the parking lot
they figured out if they listed one of the cars as a classic they
could issue two ez tags.  Of course I don't need one for the trailer,
A third car with eztags would really freek them I expect.

Greetings ARRL South Texas Section Members,

Some folks have not received their West Gulf Division Director Election
Ballot yet.

The delays are related to damage at a US Postal Service sorting facility
in Houston caused by storms in late September.

ARRL HQ released this statement addressing the delays and process to get
a replacement ballot...

From: Henderson, Dan N1ND
Date: Wed, Oct 16, 2019 at 10:59 AM
Subject: RE: West Gulf Division Ballot

Wednesday October 16, 2019

ARRL has become aware of a mail delivery problem affecting the ARRL
Board of Director election ballots sent to members in part of the West
Gulf Division. Recent flooding has affected some US Postal Service
distribution centers in the Houston region of the state, damaging some
sorting machines. This is delaying delivery to many members in that
area. They are processing mail out, but there are delays in processing
out bulk mail, which include the ballots. We are aware that ballots are
being processed as part of their work flow, but they cannot give us a
definitive date of when they will all be out for delivery.

All ballots were mailed from Hartford on Monday September 30 as required
by the Articles of Association/By-Laws. Ballots to most of the West Gulf
Division were delivered in the usual time frame, which is generally 10
to 14 days.

We have received numerous requests for replacement ballots. We also have
member notifications sent after making the replacement ballot request to
inform us the ballot had arrived. We ask ARRL members to be patient.

If you still do not receive your ballot by Monday October 21, 2019,
please send a request for a new ballot to n...@arrl.org. The ARRL HQ
will process out replacement requests on Tuesday October 22, 2019 via
first class mail and daily as later requests come in. That will allow 3+
weeks (24 days) for the replacement to be delivered to you and allowing
for their return to ARRL’s accounting firm of CohnReznick LLP by the
noon on Friday November 15, 2019 deadline.

There is no deadline for requesting a replacement ballot. Also, there is
no deadline for you to have received your ballot in order to be eligible
to vote. Please note that all replacement requests need to be in writing
(email is fine) but must directly come from the ARRL member.
Third-party requests cannot be processed.

If you have already requested a replacement ballot but still haven’t
received the original ballot by October 21st, you will need re-confirm
your need for a replacement by email to n...@arrl.org. If your original
ballot is received before that time, we also ask you confirm that to
n...@arrl.org so that your request can be closed.

We thank you for your patience in this unusual situation. If you have
any questions, please contact ARRL Assistant Secretary Dan Henderson,

2019-04-28 Thread Bruce via BVARC
Right Click on This PC or My Comptuter or whatever it is called on your
desktop. Click on Properties, Select Device Manager

Double Click on PORTS

Look at the list of COM ports used
Double click on the one you think you are using

Click on Port Settings
Make sure these are all the same as you have your radio setup to use.

Then, there is one more thing hidden here if you think COM3 or COM4
could be used by something else, click on Advanced and change the COM
port to anything else that did not appear in the original list (ie, an
unused COM port).

Close everything and reboot the computer. (Not really necessary to
reboot but windows does weird things sometimes and this is the safest
way to know if it works or not).

showing in red. I click on it and it takes. Then I have to click
on a com button so it will connect to the port. It always fails. I
did install the driver that came with the cable I bought. It says
Prolific USB to Serial Comm Port 4 on device manager (and the
other on com 3). I don't think I have the tools to measure
continuity on pins. Could I have a bad RS232 port on the Yaesu? I
think the problem is in the computer somewhere. Why would a device
show up in device manager for one cable and not the other? And if
the device is showing on com 4 in device manager, I am wondering
why I cannot connect. I don't know if I can attach files here, so
I will explain the two graphics and the messages I get - select
com 4, enter, then click on com and get "connecting the com port
now" and this is always followed by "failed to connect the com
port." Is my computer damaged inside? Hope this update helps. I
really can't afford a new computer desktop right now.

Supposedly I studied this in college and, if I correctly recall the class where

it goes up for a while. Then it stays the same for a while. Then it goes down
for a while, and then stays the same for a while, and then it goes up and keeps
going up and up and up. At that point, though, you've got less than a thousand
or so atoms per liter, so it's not real clear what "temperature" means.

I wouldn't say that the density and pressure work to raise the temperature,
more that the mechanisms for what drives the temperature change as you go up in
altitude. For example, at very high altitudes, there are more ways to get
energy into the molecules that make up air, but it's harder to get the energy
because the density is so low. The pressure and density decrease uniformly
with increases in altitude, which is why you can talk about "pressure altitude"
and "density altitude" but not "temperature altitude", and of course the
temperature, pressure, and density are all related by air's equation of state.

By the way, the "standard atmosphere" is based on something called
"geopotential altitude" which redefines the foot (well, actually meter) of
altitude to be such that the acceleration due to earth's gravity is constant.
That means that a certain integral has a closed-form solution and there's a
known conversion and fairly simple to the more usual "geometric altitude." I
found that kind of interesting.

i would have thought as the balloon gets higher with thinner air that the
temperature would get colder. you say it goes up. interesting. i may need to
take a look at that. neat experiment.

Howdy all,

I've always been intrigued by the idea of inductive/magnetic heating. I'm
remodeling now, and I'm considering a cooktop with an induction option, but I
have a hard time believing they don't produce any RF as a byproduct. Anyone
have any experience with these? Are they ham-friendly?
