FWIW, these forums have both thread rating and user reputations enabled.
They could possibly benefit from some tweaking and publicity, but they
are there. Almost no one ever uses them.

Where is the user reputations seen ?
To make it useful it feels like it at least needs to be indicated
somehow in the heading of each forum post.

Still, I suspect in most cases the post count or registration date of
the user will give you a better indication unless we get people to
actually start adding points to the reputations of different users. The
trolls often have a low post count or have just registered. Another
problem is that many senior members uses the mailing list and not the
forum.

If we like to get rid of pointless posts, it might be a better way to
do more moderation. Although, this is a tricky road as it can easily
backfire and give a lot of negative critique creating even more
pointless posts.

Thanks for the feedback, I don't particularly appreciate it.

I was explaining a situation not complaining. There are good aspects

Re: [slim] Announce: Album Catalog Creator v3

2010-03-18 Thread SilverRS8

One things comes to mind to try as another user has reported this
problem using a ReadyNAS. I didn't mention it before as you had a
working situation with this device in the past.

It seems by default the ReadyNas MySQL instance listens to port 3306
instead of 9092 as applies to the SBS MySQL instance.

Modify the following line in the HTA file to test the solution:

ConnectString3 =
;Port=9092;Database=slimserver;UID=slimserver;Password=slimserver;Option=3

into

ConnectString3 =
;Port=3306;Database=slimserver;UID=;Password=;Option=3

Also note that the UID and password arguments are also changed. If this
works, I'll make a fix for it.

In the upper right hand corner of each post is a block of info with a
small colored square at the bottom. If you hover your mouse over that
square, it will displace an alt-text such as erland is on a

AFAIK, the text descriptions can be changed, but we are stuck with the

Re: [slim] Logitech

2010-03-18 Thread linvale

The forum is one of the very special things about squeezeboxes. I own
(as I am sure nearly every computer owner does) several Logitech
devices: mice, keyboards, I have a Harmony remote and have set them up
for friends. y most recent purcahase was a pair of ultimate ears (great
product - very happy). Nearly all of these are class leaders, in my
opinion and that's why I chose them. Only the squeezeboxes have captured
my imagination, stimulated me to tinker with writing code for the first
time in 20 years and changed a fundamental part of life - how I listen
to and enjoy music and discover a new, previously undiscovered world of
internet radio.
As Snarly has said in other postings the addictive nature of
squeezeboxes and their tendency to breed (both at my house and now my
girlfriends) is an unanticipated factor I never imagined when I first
read a sterophile review and then decided to test the water with a
duet.
The message board is a really important part of the experience. I am
surprised to find myself participating with a great deal of interest in
this community - I don't have an interest in joining other boards as i
find much of the discussion in such arenas banal or positively
unpleasant. Somehow the collective wisdom of the squeeze community makes
a difference to the whole ownership experience. The music forum has
pointed me to some excellent discoveries - from high res downloads,
internet radio stations I would never have discovered and new artists
that I would never have found with my old way of browsing CD stores. The
device forums have helped me discover the (sometimes) hidden
capabilities of the players - the investment in time here has paid back
many fold in terms of undertstanding the eco-system of ethernet, wi-fi,
players and audio hardware that has been created. The contributions from
the folks developing the software and hardware are not only helpful but
create a personality for the range - these are no longer consumer
products but things that real people have created and coded with a sense
of passion and commitment. That goes for the folks at Logitech and the
several plugin developers that contribute so actively here - and make
squeezboxes so unique.

The forum will never go away whilst there is this level of interest. We
just need to ensure that the sense of comunity remains. Trolls will
soon lose interest but those that try to positively help with the
community, ensure future product enhancements and ensure that when
Logitech bought this product line they also bought an incredible
opportunity to engage a very willing, bright group of folks who want to
ensure their product remains the absolute class leader in terms of
technical capability and innovative features. On their part, Logitech
can serve us best by ensuring the successful braoad commercialisation of
the squuezbox range and an enduring place in the consumer (and
audiophile/digiphile) market place.

I see a community very committed to that goal - as I am sure does
Logitech. Was it Sean who originally started the forums with the
original slim devices? This surely must have been one of the smartest
moves i have seen in terms of product innovation and a major win for
open-source computing (which in other areas I have not seen applied so
effectively in a public/private blend - perhaps others have and I am
missing them as well!)

Sorry for the long post.

That said, I don't think we have a problem. Spam posts are very much
under control and trolling... well one readers troll may be some
writer's honest rant. I haven't seen any that I would regard as
trolling (post written to specifically be so off the wall that it
gets at least some forum members riled up, and generates a long stream
of responses). As at least some of us remember, this was a real problem
with usenet discussion groups. There was even trolling in the .lang
groups, and I hear that it got downright malicious in some of the .pets
groups.

And, frankly, that honest rant, although it's sometimes a bit of a
pain to deal with, might serve as some sort of early warning system
for any Logitech folks reading the forum. OK, well, knowing that some
folks are getting antsy about the Touch delay probably isn't news... On
the other hand, knowing that there's a strong constituency for funding
3rd party developer support and a stable API, might be good. There's
likely a bit of a fight over where development dollars go, and those
posts might give the folks on our side a bit of ammunition.

Sorry to be so long-winded...

Yes, which was my point. :)

But the OP's client wants a home menu item that displays every/all
internet radio station in existence (available to SB players).
Why anyone would want to sort through tens of thousands of stations
including every genre, type, language, and the many duplicate feeds is
beyond me.
ShoutCast alone lists over 33,000 streams, and ShoutCast does not
include every stream out there.

But to each his own. ;)

It might actually be the ethernet card inside the SB. I've yet to take
one apart so can't give you any suggestions there - and I'd hate to
suggest you do this unnecessarily.
What happens if you put your SB right next to your router?

Alternatively, if you can stand to have another electronics box in your
audio stack, you could get a b/g router than can run DD-WRT open source
firmware, install DD-WRT, and put the router into client mode. You can
then just run a short wire between the router and the SB and not use the
SB wireless section at all. If you're somewhere you can order from
Newegg, you can get the 'Asus WL 520GC'
for around $30 shipped.

Oh - and I to am particularly unimpressed with Belkin routers - at
least the few I've dealt with. But you mentioned you had this problem
with a previous router, so that's probably not the issue.

2010-03-18 Thread bobkoure

hungarianhc;524933 Wrote:
Also, does anyone know what the major advantages / disadvantages of
 going to SQL lite are?
SQLite keeps its entire database in a single file (well, sometimes a
couple) and keeps that file(s) open all the time. The advantages are
less opening/closing of files, which, on limited hardware is a win. If
the db file(s) isn't fragmented then any hardware disk caching can help
performance - at least for sequential reads. I don't know if you can set
it so the entire set of tables is cached in memory. Anyone? I haven't
worked with SQLite for some years. I hear it's loads faster than it was,
but don't have details.
Yes, MySQL is a more grown up dbms - but the tables we use - even for
100K tracks - are pretty piddly compared to what it's designed for. If
you know how to configure it, you can set it so all tables are cached in
memory, sidestepping the need to read files (even from hardware cache)
and convert them into table-logical format. However, SB server, out of
the box -isn't set to do that-. And if you've got limited hardware, you
probably don't have the resources (memory) to do that anyway.
The only downside I can see is that SQLite's hardware acceleration will
be quite dependent on the state of the DB file's fragmentation. Of
course, if you pre-allocate a large enough file that isn't an issue, but
we all have collections that are growing, at one rate or another...

While I'm on it, the antivirus angle is that MySQL is opening and
closing a bunch of files, not just keeping a single one open. That looks
like a virus trying to infect other files to an antivirus app.

I've been curious to try 7.5e just to see if the new SQLite is enough
faster than a tuned MySQL to make the web UI noticeably faster. From
replies in this thread, it sounds like it isn't, BTW. No way to really
tell from a version running in a VM with access to a few K tracks so
potentially many hours fussing for no result - which is why I posted the
question that started this discussion. Again - thanks everyone of the
response!

If the indicator colors are the same for SBR's and Radio's:

So I can only surmise that your players are (or at least *think* they

Try turning OFF the computer, if your players still show White than
they must be connected to MySB somehow.

Re: [slim] [ANN] Squeemote 1.3.4 approved for sale

2010-03-18 Thread MelonMonkey

You may want to update your web site. The release notes for instance
has you releasing updates backwards in history. If you've been able to
do this, I'd rather buy your time machine. ;)

Also, you may want to show complete screen shots on the web site - like
when you click the cropped images on the main page, zoom to a full
(non-rotated) image. The web, the traditional place for virtual
software sales, is going to become more and more important to
distinguish an iPhone app. The App store is overcrowded and that's not
likely to change any time soon.

[slim] difference in volume levels with Duet and other audio sources

2010-03-18 Thread Chilts

I know I have seen something of this before so apologise for bringing it
back, I don't seem to be able to find the thread in question.

I have Duet routed through Dacmagic DAC into Denon 1910 and out to
dedicated audio speakers. Also through the same DAC on a second optical
input is a CD player, if you have Duet at reasonable volume levels and
then switch source to CD the volume increases so much it makes your ears
bleed. I have a second Audio amp in the set up ( acting as pre amp for a
turntable, no phonostage on 1910) Would routing the Duet to the audio
amp then DAC then 1910 help at all. If not any other suggestions on how
I can equalise output levels?

Thanks.

The only way is not to use the digital volume control in the Duet.
Then the volume from CD will be identical with the volume from the
ripped CD files. The Duet digital out is identical to the CD player (so
long as you don't use volume control). Use the Denon 1910 volume
control instead.

Re: [slim] Proper scoring for troll postings, per seanadams

2010-03-18 Thread iPhone

Don't know if the green block is any help or even a so so indicator. I
have yet to see any color but green. Even a new Forum member with only 5
total posts is on a distinguished path.

When I look at my User information, I can see when people have taken
the time to use the scales icon to rate/leave feedback but I don't
believe others can see that only the member (please correct me if this
is wrong).

I think a good point was made that most trolls or trolling is done on
purpose by somebody that just signed up. So again I will also voice that
Forum Join Date and total number of posts has some degree of bearing on
this subject. The few that become trolls over time tend to get to
aggressive and end up getting banded from the Forum.

I would also have to agree with Pat that some of the recent comments
and frustration over the Touch release delay have been unwarranted and
over the top at times. I responded to several of them out of attempting
to correct errors and rumors but that only seemed to create more
posting. I would guess the one that caused Pat to start this tread is
the one that I started to answer 3 separate times and ended up deleting
my reply each time before posting as typing it let me get my frustration
out and better judgement enabled me to realize that if the poster
actually felt that way then my post wouldn't help and would probably
just cause more posting along the same lines.

All in all this is an excellent Forum with level and equal moderation
(great job administers). The members by and large follow the Forum Rules
and I believe more often then not attempt to help other members. Lastly,
this is one of the few Forums where members can speak their minds about
the Company and Products without fear that negative posts will be
deleted just because they are not glowing posts about company and its
products.

It is also my opinion that Squeezebox would not be where it is today
without this open environment of a pretty much free to speak what is on
ones mind Forum, open source software, pluggins, and the company
listening to customers wants, dreams, and wishes as well as actively
reading and replying to the Forum.

Is it a seven judge panel where the high and low scores are discarded
then the remaining scores averaged? Are the judges appointed for life or
on a rotating panel?

And as far as what the judges favor, does one get bonus points for

OK, so if a post talks about newly invented pseudoscience, it gets more
from the judges. If it uses well established nonsense such as jitter, it
gets some, etc.

The best score is 10/10, for perfect execution, creativity, and freshness.

Note, a 1/10 is still troll food, just not as perfect.

[slim] SB3 error: Can't open file for?

For a few weeks now I occasionally I get the error Problem: Can't open

press play again, it plays the song perfectly. I can't see anything I
can relate to in the logs. I've been updating a number of times but to
no resolve.

Currently I'm running SBS version: 7.4.3 - r30375

Any ideas what the problem may be or how to track it (which log to
enable)?

unreachable. Most common trolls seem to get 2/10 or 3/10, some rise to

The perfect troll, by definition, is perfectly stealthy. Thus it could
never be detected so as to receive a rating.

This may seem paradoxical but it is elegantly explained by a sort of
warping of the thread fabric, which occurs as the limit is approached.

this could be done with an app, but even then you would still get a

So if I follow this, as the elusive perfect Troll approaches perfection
basically nearing something similar to an Event Horizon, as the Troll

really only a past image of him that we still see hence we never
actually see the perfect Troll?

Are we still on topic or did the Tread cross over the Event Horizon

Having said that, it seems to me like the software implementation is

[slim] Is this really too complicated a set up?!

2010-03-18 Thread squeezeWallet

Ok I've been looking around for a decent around the house audio system.

This is what I currently have:

Lounge:
Shuttle PC used as a media pc with projector and surround sound system
coming from amp

Study:
2 PCs, both with speaker systems

Bedroom:
Oxx Tube Network Radio

Music Room:
Nothing

Hall:
iPod Dock with speakers

Bathroom:
Nothing

I also have two iPod Touches.

So...

I've bought a Squeezebox Duet and was anticipating buying more, until I
hit the familiar software issues that bugged me with the previous
glowing brick I got from Logitech that was the Harmony 1000.

Can anyone explain how I can set up my house so I can press a button to
play syncronised sound in all rooms?

I set up the duet receiver in the hall to play through the mp3 dock and
installed squeezeserver on the pc in the lounge, and then tried
softsqueeze and squeezeplayer on the pcs in the study, however no sound
ever comes out.

Have been through all the instructions etc (am a software engineer, so
I'm not completely daft!).

Can anyone level with me - is this just buggy and likely to continue or
am I not getting something?

Re: [slim] Is this really too complicated a set up?!

2010-03-18 Thread tcutting

Were you unable to get the Duet receiver to play at all?
I believe there is a bug with the Squeezeplay application that keeps
it from playing when synchronized with other players. Believe that
Softsqueeze should have worked, however.
Also, the pc-hosted software players don't synchronize accurately -
although hardware players synchronize well together. Your whole-house
synchronized concept likely needs more hardware players around your
house... the built-in user interfaces for synchronizing is rather
ackward, but my understanding is iPeng in iPod touch has nice
synchronization interface.
Obviously, get your initial setup running, and then consider adding
more players. Also, connect via wired ethernet wherever possible, as
most issues arise due to wireless problems/interference.

I'm not sure every newsreader can necessarily read mail, but some do.
I use Gnus, an emacs based newsreader, which also handles email.

My vote is that you're not getting something, but we'll need more info.
But first a disclaimer: sync using software players (SoftSqueeze,
Squeezeplay, or squeezeslave) is almost certainly going to be imperfect,
with imperfect ranging from mildly annoying reverb effects to
insanity-producing echo chamber effects. In contrast, the hardware
players sync reliably.

Now, for the questions. You say that no sound ever comes out.
- Does that include the SB Receiver as well as the software players?
- Are the various SBs (hardware and software) connecting successfully
to the server?
- If so, do their displays indicate that they _think_ they are playing
something? (eg, showing elapsed time, VU meters, etc)
- Can you get both the SBR and the software players to play un-sync'd?
- Have you confirmed that your firewall isn't blocking connections?

Hello and welcome to the Forum. I think you need to start over and call
Tech Support. Don't know what model mp3 dock your have or how it is
setup, but the Receiver part of the Duet is designed to hook up to a
stereo through the RCA Outs or self powered speakers.

Question: How come you have music in the hall and not in the Music
Room?

I have had a Harmony 1000 since they have come out and not had a single
problem with it. Bought one for my parents and they don't have any
issues with it.

As to music all through out the house, Squeezebox can make that easy if
properly setup and you have a healthy WiFi Network. The WiFi Network
must be trouble free, free of interference, no firewall issues, and just
because a laptop works over WiFi for web and Email doesn't necessarily
mean ones WiFi network is healthy without issue. The only thing harder
to stream over WiFi then audio is audio/video.

Once each room has a Squeezebox, then it is a simple thing to Sync them
so they are all playing at the same time. Many of us do it everyday. If
you want the Forum to help trouble shoot this, we will need exact
details.

Re: [slim] Proper scoring for troll postings, per seanadams

2010-03-18 Thread Siduhe

Aha! Found it - who wants to have a go at a non-audiophile forum
version?:

You claim that an
( ) audible
( ) measurable
( ) hypothetical

improvement in sound quality can be attained by:
( ) upsampling
( ) non-oversampling
( ) increasing word size
( ) vibration dampening
( ) bi-wiring
( ) replacing the external power supply
( ) using a different lossless format
( ) decompressing on the server
( ) removing bits of metal from skull
( ) using ethernet instead of wireless
( ) inverting phase
( ) reversing “polarity” of resistors
( ) ultra fast recovery rectifiers
( ) installing bigger connectors
( ) installing Black Gate caps
( ) installing ByBee filters
( ) installing hospital-grade AC jacks
( ) defragmenting the hard disk
( ) running older firmware
( ) using exotic materials in cabinet
( ) bronze heatsinks
( ) violin lacquer
( ) $500 power cords
( ) a universally applicable omnidirectional tweeter

Your idea will not work. Specifically, it fails to account for:
( ) the placebo effect
( ) your ears honestly aren't that good
( ) your idea has already been thoroughly disproved
( ) modern DACs upsample anyway
( ) those products are pure snake oil
( ) lossless formats, by definition, are lossless
( ) those measurements are bogus
( ) sound travels much slower than you think
( ) electric signals travel much faster than you think
( ) that's not how binary arithmetic works
( ) that's not how TCP/IP works
( ) the Nyquist theorem
( ) the can't polish a turd theorem
( ) bits are bits

You will try to defend you idea by:
( ) claiming that your ears are “trained”
( ) claiming immunity to psychological/physiological factors that
affect everyone else
( ) name-calling
( ) criticizing spelling/grammar

Your subsequent arguments will probably appeal in desperation to such
esoterica as:
( ) jitter
( ) EMI
( ) thermal noise
( ) quantum mechanical effects
( ) resonance
( ) existentialism
( ) nihilism
( ) communism
( ) cosmic rays

And you will then change the subject to:
( ) theories are not the same as facts
( ) measurements don't tell everything
( ) not everyone is subject to the placebo effect
( ) blind testing is dumb
( ) you can't prove what I can't hear
( ) science isn't everything

Rather than engage in this tired discussion, I suggest exploring the
following factors which are more likely to improve sound quality in your
situation:
( ) room acoustics
( ) source material
( ) type of speakers
( ) speaker placement
( ) crossover points
( ) equalization
( ) Q-tips
( ) psychoanalysis
( ) trepanation

Re: [slim] Wireless Connectivity Issue

2010-03-18 Thread Stdik

Hi again folks. As someone pointed out I have tried INSSIDER. This does
show there to be fairly heavy network traffic in the locality. I have
tried to put my router onto a channel which is largely clear of those
being used.I have tried sitting the SB right next to the router and it
seemed to work ok according to the network test feature but when it came
to playing real music it still messed about. One thing I can't
understand is when I put the Network Test function on the signal
fluctuates wildly anywhere between 0% and 100% when anything above
3000mps is selected but generally never stays constant apart from one
occsasion when it did sustain 100% at 5000mps for about an hour during
which time it worked perfectly. Unfortunately I made the mistake of
switching it off (but not shutting the server down) after which when I
turned it back on it played up as usual. I really am starting to think
that it's faulty. I think we're about running out of ideas but if anyone
has any new ideas please feel free to express them here !

I definitely need a plugin for everything that maybe challenging
 license wise, like Lyrics.

Just for information, I've started to look at a new Song Info plugin
which will provide a generic JSON interface to get extra text or image
url information from the server related a song, artist or album.

If everything works well it will have a plugin interface similar to
Custom Scan so you can add custom modules as separate plugins but still
have a generic interface to request the information.

The main reason for implementing it is that I want artist images in my
Album Flow applet, so I'm not doing this specifically for iPeng but I
suspect it might be useful also there unless you want a solution that
works with MySB.com.

I'm not yet sure if it't enough to just return raw text or image urls,
there might be a need for some combination and maybe also for some kind
of formatted text version.

Things that should work with this:
- Last FM information (like similar artists, artist images, textual
description of album/artist)
- Integration with AlbumReview/Biography plugins (haven't look at their
interface yet, but the plan is that it should work)
- Integration with some lyrics plugin
- Information scanned with Custom Scan plugin

I'll probably focus on LastFM and Custom Scan support initially.

Re: [slim] Everything stopped working

2010-03-18 Thread dundon00

Yes, these are squeezebox receivers.

Interestingly, when I shut down my computer, the lights remain white.
When I unplug my receivers and re-plug them back in, they go from red
back to white. I even tried unplugging my router altogether eliminating
any wireless signal, and they STILL went to white.

I've never installed any Beta software on my machine.

Originally I used my Duet controller to set it up. I successfully set
up everything over a year ago and have only the occasional hiccup but
never anything this severe.

[slim] Sirius Radio Streaming Error

2010-03-18 Thread jamietmob

Hello,
Has anyone come up with a fix the Sirius error: Streaming stopped, you
are no longer authorized to listen. If so could you please post a link
or share the workaround? Thanks!

Jamie

I've also attempted to uninstall SqueezeCenter including all preferences
and re-install to no avail. Might it help to disconnect or delete the
 players from mysqueezebox.com?

Ok are they actually connected to mysqueezebox.com ?

If the disconect button is not greyed out they are conected.

On the mysqueezbox com website there is a remote control button can you
play radio from there ?

Note that a player can only be connected to one server at the time
local squeezeboxserver or mysqueezebox.com

If sthey indeed are conected there, a click on the disconect button
should get them back to the lokal server.

Re: [slim] Everything stopped working

2010-03-18 Thread dundon00

I called support and figured it out. Apparently my controller was
connected to another account for some reason so it wasn't finding the
players. They reset it on the server, then we reset connecting to the
receivers, and everything is working now. Thanks for the responses

A really cool thing is if someone could write a nice bot software that
auto responded to to posts with Seans form prefilled.

Searching for key phrases like quantum purifiers, wav sounds better

There is no SBS web UI with WHS?

Sure there is. SBS on WHS is identical to the regular Windows version. It only
_adds_ the WHS console integration.

I don't know enough to say - but on my install, Start | Programs |
 Squeezebox Server only offers up:

Why would you want to log in to your WHS if you can access SBS through the WHS
console? There are buttons to open the web UI.
