On Mon, 18 Jan 2010 04:21:16 +, Jim Harris wrote: >While phone contesting yesterday I found there is audio feedback >from headphones/external speakers through the microphone without >the PTT being pressed. The problem may be related to the sound card in your computer. Depending on settings in your logging software and the computer sound card mixers, the sound card may be the feedback path. There are two "mixers" in a typical sound card, one for "recording" that feeds audio to the computer to be handled by software, and another for "playback" that controls sound fed by the sound card to external equipment (like the K3). When you feed audio to the K3 (either recorded messages or your live mic), you are using the Playback mixer. The catch is that there's an input on this mixer for a microphone, and most laptops have a mic built into their case. When they do, that mic is on by default. There's usually a switch (in the mixer) to turn it off and turn on a mic that plugs into the mic jack. Either the internal mic or an external mic plugged in can be part of the feedback path. To determine if its the internal mic, bang on the computer case and see if you "hear" it in your K3. I often run into this when setting up my IBM laptops for RTTY -- the input to the recording sound card is that internal mic rather than the wired input from the K3, so decoding "sort of" works, but not very well. :) So I suggest that you study YOUR setup, think about the computer sound card signal flow, and study your mixer settings. Also, keep the mixers open and viewable on your screen while the logger is doing its thing -- some loggers (N1MM, for example) actively controls the mixers to do recording on the fly of new messages, and to switch a mic plugged into the computer to one radio or the other for radio for SO2R. 73, Jim K9YC __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

[Elecraft] K3 Audio Feedback
Hi folks, While phone contesting yesterday I found there is audio feedback from headphones/external speakers through the microphone without the PTT being pressed. Monitor level was initially set at about 15. I was using a Heil BM-10ic headphone through the front panel with bias turned on. They have tiny ear pads that could easily let an amount of noise slip past to the microphone. The audio line out on my K3 back panel goes to a computer which has garden variety speakers hooked to it's audio out. On the radio I had the AF control turned most of the way up and was riding the RF (IF) gain. NR was on with a setting of F1-2. I found that when the RF gain was turned up something like half way or more (depending on signal level) the audio level would creep up as though AGC was pumping. If the gain was further increased the characteristic howl of feedback resulted. Remember all this was occurring without PTT (no PTT light). I would have thought the microphone would be dead without PTT. I turned down the monitor to 8 and the feedback was not as much but was still present. Finally I moved the volume control slider for the computer speakers to the bottom and that eliminated the feedback. I'm very surprised to find a microphone connected to the K3 is live and that the audio is being feed to the audio outputs without the PTT being pressed resulting in the described feedback. That is disappointing because it limits the ways that I can use my radio. I'm wondering if this may be the source of some noise comments here on the reflector. Does anyone else have any experience with this or any constructive comments? Have a good day and 73. Re: [Elecraft] K3 vers K2 questions that I keep seeimg
Thanks everyone for your feedback. I am sure that at one time the K2 must have had more then it's share of hits on this site. The K3 will probably be in my future although I have known 2 people that have owned them and traded them off. But then again they went through a number of radios before they stopped. If one radio was the ultimate then everyone else would go out of business. Also it was noted that it depends on what the radio is doing and the operator. My radios either sit for months or worked hard. I like qrp. I use it when in my work room with a hunk of wire, 4:1, ground and extrenal ATU. Mostly CW but I own a NUE-PSK 31 which is a stand alone psk/rtty modem (look ma no computer). I plan on making a cable and using that with the K2 shortly. My CW is yuck, but you can find my yuck on the QRS 40 meter freq (7.110 - 7.116 mhz) on and off during the evenings, and the CW quality if the K2 is nothing short of great. And I do SSB on 40, 20, 18 and 15 meters. Like to make contacts and rag chew if I can. I do contests just to make contacts and give other points. Not yet into serious radiosport. So the basic K2 works for me at home or when I go camping. The /100 part is more when I am on my good antenna and the band is hot (luke warm is also great). So changing power suppies and cranking it up is my second option. Somehow have 100 mw to 100 watts in the same small lightweight box, with a great reciever fits my needs. So do I need a K3? Only time will tell. The K2 is not my only radio. I have a classic IC-756 and a hot new Icom IC-7200 field radio which is a digital dream radio to use. I really believe in the days, weeks, months and years to come the K2 will probably be closer to me and used more often. I really do not feel I need the extra feature of the K3 at this time. If I want another DSP option I can get it for the K2, but the analog AF filter is quite impressive. It should be noted that my impression of Elecraft is that they are nothing short of fantastic.. I did at one time make a K1/4 and it was one great radio. The K2 stacks up to and in some case exceeds my other two radios and that includes the IC-7200 which has the guts of the IC-7000 and PROIII 32 bit IF DSP and 24 bit A/D - D/A, and smaller and lighter to boot. I think if money was not an issue and I was a hard core conterster I would have to have a K3, but I am a casual user who likes to chase dx and talk to anyone. I like low power and 100 watts to me is high power. My hearing is going to sound quality is a major factor and the K2/100 internal speaker is so-so, but an external or headset and the radio real works for me. So thank you one and all for the feedback. It is greatly appreciated. Hope I will catch you all on the air someday. 73, have a great week and happy dxing to one and all Harry K7ZOV __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Monitor delay on the K3
Maybe its all the years of listening to headset conversations for work and dealing with IFB and ProChannel delay issues, but it comes as news to me that there is a delay in the K3 audio monitor output for either SSB or CW! If its there its very slight. I'm really picky about things like that and I don't hear it! I will have to pay closer attention now that you guys have pointed this out. If Lyle and Elecraft chooses to change it, I vote for a menu setting, and mine will always be on the "post processing" selection. -lu-W4LT- K3 #3192 Message: 2 Date: Sun, 17 Jan 2010 12:33:21 -0500 From: Guy Olinger K2AV Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Monitor delay on the K3 To: li...@subich.com Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Message-ID: <46f338981001170933r14a06cd4s7800076afa8be...@mail.gmail.com> Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 I can believe anyone who says that the heard delay trips them up. Re: [Elecraft] K3: Using an Icom PW-1 Linear Amplifier
Greg & Lou, Thanks for your responses to my question about K3 and PW-1. So, it looks like I can use the PW-1 as long as I account for and operate in a manner safe for the PW-1 with no ALC and also do my own band-switching. Well, I just may consider buying a Tokyo Hi-Power amp but I am in no rush. I do want to wait and here more detailed rumors on anything that Elecraft might want to create for an S/S amp. But, if that is too far out I may decide to get the THP or maybe even something else (if something better). I will not be making any decisions in the next 6 months though. I think I will focus on racking up a WAS on my K3 CW mode in the mean time and I prefer 100 watts or less for that. 73, phil, K7PEH On Jan 17, 2010, at 6:22 PM, Greg wrote: > I use a Yaesu Quadra with my K3. [Elecraft] Elecraft CW Net Report for January 17th & 18th, 2010
Good Evening, Yes, it is still raining. The weather is testing my new roof to see if it can find a way in. My skylight appears to be the weak link. Uck! There must be a way to solve this. But the fire is toasty and my bench has a pile of projects ready to build. Some kits, some parts to solder dead bug style onto PCB material, and others from melding schematic snippets together along with some paper and calculator work. By springtime I will have some more QRP gear and a lot more understanding of how it works and how to design it. Winter can be a lot of fun :) Propagation was not bad but not great either. Twenty meters did seem weaker than normal and forty meters did not elicit as many check ins as it has lately. But it is nice to hear folks. I have not yet been skunked and from what I read on SpaceWeather the sun is waking up. We are due for a CME strike in day or two. There are already exciting aurora at northern latitudes but those may wander southward with this new spate of ions impinging upon us. So, a day of noise followed by a few days of very good propagation. The FYBO folks mentioned 15 meters waking up with this activity. That will be nice. My weather forecast is for pretty much non-stop rain for the next two weeks. That doesn't mean the rain is going to cease but rather how long my forecast runs into the future. It is not like I expect it to end because it can keep raining until May and not be unusual. However, it is peaceful to hear it hitting the roof on the days when the rain is not torrential. I do need to get away from the bench occasionally and get back to where I can use the radios on the air. The fox hunts are a good break twice a week as are the two Elecraft nets. I really should get on the air on 80 meters and see who my neighbors are during the week. Maybe I will run into some folks I have actually met face to face :) Until next week stay warm and stay healthy, 73, Kevin. Also why is there so many K3 problems listed at > this stage of the game? Perhaps because the K2 has been out for over 10 years and the K3 has been out for only 2. Do you suppose you would have been asking "why are there so many questions about the K2?" back in 2001? How much K3 traffic will be on the reflector in 2018? Also, I think a more demanding class of operator is using the K3 in more demanding situations than the K2. As you mentioned, some of them are "a different breed." What are the current problems that you perceive with the K3 that do not ultimately come down to operator preference? > So what is the opion of those who have both or had the K2 and now > the K3? Which is the better value for the budget minded and for > those on a budget what is the cost of a K3/100 that would meet most > people needs. I think the basic K3/100 with the stock 2.7 kHz roofing filter would meet most average ham's needs for $1899.95. That gives you everything that a fully loaded K2/100 gives you and then some. I have both a K2/10 and a K3/100. I find the K3 has a noticeably better receiver, is much easier to operate, and has features that make my day-to-day operation much more pleasant. The difference in cost between a "fully loaded" K2/100 and a "stripped down" K3/100 is $270.30 if I've done my math correctly. In my opinion the extras the K3 gives you for that $270.30 are well worth the money. The K2 is a great rig if you simply can't afford or can live without the extra features and performance that the K3 gives you. I started out with a pretty basic K2 and added to it over the years as budget permitted (and I'm doing the same with the K3.) Re: [Elecraft] K3 vers K2 questions that I keep seeimg
Note: The first time I sent this, it didn't seem to go out properly. My apologies in advance if 2 copies show up. Hi Harry, > Is it my imagination or are K3 question and issues a bit more then > K2 issues? My in box since I signed up is buldging with K3 questions > and problems. ... I started out with a pretty basic K2 and added to it over the years as budget permitted (and I'm doing the same with the K3.) I still use my K2 for portable/field work and as a backup rig, but I enjoy using the K3 more. Asking whether a K3 will get you more contacts than a K2 is like asking if a basic economy car will get you more places than a luxury car. I've been very happy with the combination. Had a THP 1.5Kfx for a time, and its automatic bandswitching works well using a properly wired cable and Yaesu settings on the amp (my K3 has had the mods not found on earlier K3's incorporated into it by the factory, for builds after late 2008, I believe). 73, Lou, W0FK Phil Hystad wrote: > > Do any of you K3 users out there in Elecraft-land use an Icom PW-1 linear? > I have a PW-1 that I use in concert with my Icom 756 Pro III. [Elecraft] K3 vers K2 questions that I keep seeimg
"Is it worth it" can be answered from at least two different approaches: 1. Are you interested in PERFORMANCE and if so, to what degree. Your answer depends on what type of operating you do. Do you do a lot of contesting? Are you a serious DXer? Do you work DX on Top Band? Do you operate esoteric modes such as ESSB? Do you need a radio with diversity reception (optional)? How about a radio that covers 160 - 2 in a single box? Is being able to "clear" the RIT/XIT with the push of a button important? If your answer to any of these is YES, then you may want the K3. If you are a "casual" operator who likes to makes Q's on a band w/o much QRM and turns the rig off if the signal are weak because you want arm-chair copy, QSY away from QRM because of low tolerance, etc., then the answer may be no. 2. If you simply need to own "the best performing rig available" irrespective of how you operate, then the K3 is for you. Failing the YES answer to the above, I'd stick with the K2/100 (I have two K3s and 1 K2). The other BIG consideration (question) for you is, Are you comfortable operating QRP after having operated QRO (100 watts)." There IS a BIG difference! This is NOT a "is it worth it" question, but a "can you adapt to it" question. de Doug KR2Q __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3: Using an Icom PW-1 Linear Amplifier
I use a Yaesu Quadra with my K3. Requires a slight modification to the cables that is not difficult. I think Wayne plans to implement Icom CIV protocol as an option at some point but not sure where it is on his priorities. You can also use something like the Microham MicrokeyerII which can provide CIV output. 73 Greg AB7R Phil Hystad wrote: > Do any of you K3 users out there in Elecraft-land use an Icom PW-1 linear? [Elecraft] K3: Using an Icom PW-1 Linear Amplifier
Do any of you K3 users out there in Elecraft-land use an Icom PW-1 linear? I have a PW-1 that I use in concert with my Icom 756 Pro III. Now that I own a K3, which looks like it will be my primary rig, I am thinking about eventually feeding it to my PW-1. This raises a number of questions, chief among them is whether the PW-1 can follow the band switching of the K3. Since most of my activity is CW and since I have never used my linear in CW mode with my Pro III, it is mostly likely that I would use the linear only with SSB. I am also thinking that down the road I may want to get another solid-state amplifier to be used with my K3. For this reason I am very interested in what future products might come out of Elecraft. Other then Elecraft in the future, has anyone used a Tokyo Hi-Power amp with a K3 and if so do they couple up well. Does the THP amp follow the K3 for band switching? [Elecraft] K3 Build Questions
I am on pages 44 and 45 of the assembly manual and have made it through all the steps. In going through the resistance checks, I got the following values: - At the power poles (12VDC), all I got was an infinite resistance no matter which way I made the measured it. - At the R36 test point, I got 239.5 ohms which beats the 150 ohm criteria listed - At the U12 test point, I got 2 different values: a) 4.86 kilo-ohms at the terminal furthest from the blue electrolytic capacitor in the neighborhood of the U12 regulator b) 237.2 ohms at the terminal closest to the blue electrolytic capacitor in the neighborhood of the U12 regulator - At the U13 test point, I got the following: 423 ohms. Re: [Elecraft] K3 ESSB macro
Yes, but you can't embed a conditional statement in a macro so being able to read the current ESSB state doesn't help. Re: [Elecraft] K3 vers K2 questions that I keep seeimg
Harry, I have both the K2 and the K3 - the K2 does not see use in the shack, but rests at the workbench and is my transceiver of choice for portable operation. First let me try to shed some light on the number of K3 questions/problems as compared with the K2 by stating that when the K2 was only 3 years old, there were something like 1000 of them sold by that time, and this reflector was full of K2 questions/problems everyday. By comparison, the K3 has sold over 3 times that number, so there are 3 times the number of new users everyday with questions, comments, and problems (some perceived, some real). Note that many of the problems are answered by telling the owner how to accomplish whatever he was trying to do - you have to read both the question and the response to determine that rather than just counting the number of posts. The same was true in the earlier days of the K2. The K2 is a mature product, and many of the owners have had them for a while, so their questions have been answered some time ago. Even though it is "mature", I expect mine to continue to function properly for another 20 to 30 years - and I have one of the original Field Test K2s. After that 20 to 30 years, I might not care anymore, it will be left to my heirs. If one compares the cost of a basic K3/100 with the cost of a loaded K2/100 kit from Elecraft, if the dollar value were the only thing considered, the buyer would likely opt for the K3 - most all the function offered by the basic K3/100 would require most all the options be installed in the K2/100 - and the K2 would not have the DSP flexibility of the K3, nor the possibility of adding the SubRX later. The performance of the K2 and the K3 is very good (check the Sherwood listings), but the K3 is better - whether one's operating habits warrant the K3 is entirely a different question, only the operator himself can create that answer. Since you already have the K2/100, then the cost comparison does not work for you - you will have to evaluate how much you could get for your K2 should you sell it and deal with the price difference between your existing K2 and a K3. In other words, I believe it is deceiving to look at the reflector traffic in comparing questions/problems between the K2 and the K3. 73, Don W3FPR harry latterman wrote: > I have a wonderful K2/100 and yes have eyed th K3 as so many other has. [Elecraft] K3 vers K2 questions that I keep seeimg
Harry, Of course there are lots of K3-related postings and yes, questions. It's Elecraft's latest and greatest, and the center of attention. I wasn't here during the equivalent time of the K2, but I expect the reflector then was dominated with K2 questions and "problems". If you read carefully, many / most of the postings really come down to being opinions of the poster. Not many relate to actual problems with the K3, but rather with the owner's view of what -he- thinks the radio should be. If his particular want isn't met, it may be viewed a "problem". You'll not find another company that deals with real problems faster. I have a K2 (#5665) and it's a wonderful radio that met virtually all of my real world operating needs for several years. I wouldn't think of parting with it. My K3's just more "fun". 73! I'm not saying Linux is 100% secure, but hackers hardly ever target it so in practise it is. On the Windows box I use Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. Again, it isn't as secure as fanatics claim, but it is targeted much less often. I also use Gmail instead of email clients, so any nasties I might get sent are never downloaded on to my computer. Gmail has excellent spam and phishing filters, and I don't think I have ever seen a dodgy email in my Inbox. Another thing you can do is switch your DNS servers to OpenDNS - basically, use 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 in place of your ISP-provided domain name servers. Should you be tricked into accessing a spoof website you'll be sent to an OpenDNS page warning you about it instead. It's just an extra level of protection. The breakout box with RCA Phono jacks is a good approach and used by many. I prefer to use VGA Y-Adapter cables to combine whichever single-function cables I need for a given setup. I either make or buy the single-function cables, e.g., FSK/PTT, KRC2, Top-Ten Decoder, etc. As K6KR noted, many of the VGA Y-Adapters and other VGA cables have missing connections or shorted connections that work fine in the intended VGA applications. So, you have to carefully check the continuity of VGA adapters/cables for the K3 ACC application. I've been through a lot of VGA Y-Adapters and only found one source with all the connections made properly. Re: [Elecraft] K3 ACC connector and VGA cable
Using a VGA cable probably won't bring all of the signals out to the end of the pigtail since the VGA standard doesn't use off of them. There are commerical cables using the DB-15 high density connector that bring out all pins, or you can build your own. It's more fun to build your own. Guy, I agree that having the option to have either real-time un-processed or to select processed with the delay would be best. While using the monitor to evaluate the on-air sound of one's signal is good, and having a slight delay when doing that is not a problem. On the other hand, another reason for using the monitor has nothing to do with the transmitted signal quality, but instead has all to do with proper, clear speech. In addition to making sure I speak clearly, I also use the monitor to remind myself to not yell into the microphone. Having no delay when these latter two are my intents would be helpful. 73, Bob W5OV -Original Message- From: elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net [mailto:elecraft-boun...@mailman.qth.net] On Behalf Of Guy Olinger K2AV Sent: Sunday, January 17, 2010 11:33 AM To: li...@subich.com Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Monitor delay on the K3 I can believe anyone who says that the heard delay trips them up. Yes, Terry, I called a QST for the net at approx 10 AM and moved to what was clear at this QTH. That happened to be 14.310. We ran until about 1830 or so. I was trying to hold the 14.314 freq earlier but got called away to fix an RFI into some speakers! That brief pause was enough for another station to take up residency at 14.313 on this end!! I look forward to Lyle's possible 'pre' or 'post' processing selection for MON audio. 73 Tom G3OLB __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] Monitor delay on the K3

One of the most important uses for monitor is to actually monitor the quality of one's own transmission. That simply can't happen if the monitor is a copy of audio from the mic preamp without any other processing applied by the transceiver. The delays in the K3 are not long enough provide any significant operational issue. Any slight slowing of speech rate is welcome with some of the "machine gun" operators. 73, ... Re: [Elecraft] Fw: My predicament
This is an obvious scam and it happens daily. Information that it comes from Nigeria just confirms this. There are no honest e-mails from Nigerians; believe it. I don't understand why these e-mails from the the Ukraine and Nigeria continue, but they must enjoy some success. They are usually writen in poor English, offer absurd sales or purchases and ask you to send money in advance to unconfirmed addresses. One way to protect yourself is NEVER send money in advance to unconfirmed addresses. This is easy with Call Signs because one would only send money or equipment to addresses confirmed by QRZ.com. If we HAMS follow some basic rules we should avoid these scams. These offers are appearing more frequently now on HAM ads. I agree a fool is born every minute, but HAMS seem to be brighter than most groups. I make no apologies to Nigerians. I have worked at the U.S. Embassy in Lagos; there is no greater concentration of criminals than Nigeria. Many thanks to VE3GAM for identifying the IP address. I hope Ted notifies the FBI, which is charged with investigating this type computer identity theft. Re: [Elecraft] Re: My predicament - how the hacker s do
Unfortunately it is all too easy to "spoof" someone's e-mail identity. An e-mail message is merely a text message where some of the text (at the beginning of the message stream) are headers that identify the sender, reply address, and other information. The remainder of the message is the actual message body or information text itself. So, anyone can fabricate an e-mail message (the rules are defined in several different publicly available RFCs, e.g. RFC 2822). This was not an uncommon occurrence in some software technology companies, especially those with lots of Unix oriented programmers. It was simple to use telnet to originate a message to be sent to the SMTP port on some computer. You merely typed in the headers you wanted to identify the sender and reply address and the receiver could have no way of figuring out if the message was sent by the actual person whose e-mail address was used or not. There are some ways, such as clues to which utility wrote the e-mail message (e.g. MS Outlook) that you could also fabricate. There are ways to prevent this, such as digital encryption and using digital signatures, but this would require a major rework of electronic mail. Many corporate e-mail systems do not use the regular RFC defined mail protocols unless messages are sent externally outside of the corporate e-mail system. Instead, they use systems such as MS Exchange or IBM "Lotus" Notes. 73, phil, K7PEH On Jan 17, 2010, at 6:54 AM, Johnny Siu wrote: > There should be a hacker, hacking into Ted's computer and steal all the > contact information in the address book of Ted's mail account. [Elecraft] Re: My predicament - how the hacker s do
There should be a hacker, hacking into Ted's computer and steal all the contact information in the address book of Ted's mail account. Therefore, everyone on Ted's address book will receive this email asking for some money. Since the amount requested is not significantly large, there is a chance that someone just believe that email and remit the funds. One of my colleague in Hong Kong has recently fallen into this trap. If you want to ascertain whether email is a valid request, send a reply to the hacker and ask for some precision information such what is mother's middle name or who was the first girl friend before marriage. Then you will get a dead silent from the hacker. The hacker always pretends to be the administrator of hotmail, gmail, yahoo or even paypal. They send you a link ask you to update or reconfirm your information. Once you click the link and login, then your login information such as user name or password will be hacked. I have my CM-500 that arrived yesterday directly to the radio rear mic input and the BIAS enabled at "rP.L bIAS" and it works great.Don't know how many volts the K3 produce in that setting but the headphone set works very good. Re: [Elecraft] Is the K2 old technology
I'm in the same boat as you and my choice was made over a year ago. I will be getting a K3. The K3 is a little bit better than the O2 in specs but the thing that swings it for me is the fantastic Elecraft support. I think I read on the reflector that the O2's firmware hasn't been updated in over a year. How many K3 updates have been sent out this last year? As for the K3 vs. K2 question, K3 has the better receiver although the K2 can put to shame some of the mid level rigs being sold today. K3 is an all mode TX/RX where the K2 is CW/SSB. The K2 has much lower power consumption than the K3 owing to it's design as a QRP rig and lack of bells and whistles. I like to think that comparing the K2 to the K3 is like comparing the Kenwood TS-520 to the Kenwood TS-830 of yore. Bert Craig wrote: > Was Conway's question ever adequately explored/answered? Re: [Elecraft] K3 10 Watt Version - How much actual power out?
Dean, running the driver "flat out" or indeed the PA at full power creates a high level of 3rd order IMD. If you run the K3 around 1/4 power the IMD on SSB transmit reduces by around 10 dB. It's not that the K3 is particularly bad in this regard, almost all 12 Volt PA transceivers are like it. My recommendation would be to opt for the 100 Watt PA and run into your linear at 15 ~ 25 Watts or so. 73 Dave, G4AON K3/100 #80 === I presently have a K2 with 15 to 17 watts out. When I need QRO it runs my AL-811H amp up to a few hundred watts so I have never needed the 100 watt finals. I am thinking that I will be able to do the same thing with the K3 as long as it has about the same output. For those with the 10 watt model, it would be helpful to know what your actual power out is. Thanks! Re: [Elecraft] Monitor delay on the K3
In my view, if it has to be one or the other, I would choose "pre" audio, ie with no discernable delays. One of the biggest annoyances I've had in a contest situation is adjacent operators shouting down the mic because they don't or can't listen to a monitor of their own voice. Feedback is also a problem, but, on balance, I prefer a little side tone in my ear. One reason I don't like mobile phones - no side tone.
