Many thanks to the many who took time out to reply to my request. As well as
knowing where to go for my headphones/mic it seems there's other stores I
should check out - could be an expensive trip..!

Thanks to all who replied. You fellas really make me feel stupid when you
remind me what important details I've forgotten to include like is the KAT3
included

Well yes, I do have the KAT3 and with some help from Gary in Support I
found the IF trap on the board (L10/C10) was causing the high swr on 6m. No
obvious damage to the components but for now I've bypassed the trap as
recommended by Gary and all is well.

Thanks again...!

Hi,

Just tried 6m for the first time on #145(!) and getting high swr into a
well matched antenna as well as a dummy load plugged directly into either
antenna socket; around 2.1/2.6:1 and high enough for tx calibration to fail.

All other bands fine so wondering if I should check the low pass filter?

[Elecraft] [K3] Toggle macros

2012-07-11 Thread GW0ETF
Apologies if this is 'yesterday's news'...

When I'm SPing in a contest with the 2nd receiver in the right ear (A-AB) I
like to be able to switch quickly to sub in both ears (AB-AB); often it
makes it easier to copy a weaker signal.

I've been doing this with 2 macros to switch the L-MIX-R menu item, one
allocated to M4 TAP and the other to M4 HOLD. After reading the recent posts
on the K3 Triple Macro ('self modifying code') for cycling power levels I
realised I should be able to set up the audio mixing macro on just one
button as a true toggle switch, and the following 2 macros both allocated to
M4 TAP does just that and now releases the M4 HOLD for another macro.

MACRO 5 AB AB   MN111;MP003;MN110;SWT29;SWT39;SWT14;
MACRO 6 A ABMN111;MP001;MN110;SWT27;SWT39;SWT14;

Thanks to whoever thought of all this, it's pretty neat. The first 2 fields
(MN111;MP003;etc) switch the L-MIX-R and were originally allocated to tap
and hold separately; the other fields reset the macro as in the 'Triple
Macro' examples.

As an aside, it would be great to be able to comment the macros (in K3
Utility?) especially when they're a bit involved like this; I've not found
this is possible. Presumably this won't work unless the 'comments' are
stored in the K3's EEPROMwith the inevitable space issues?

Re: [Elecraft] Buying a K3 in the UK?

2012-05-30 Thread GW0ETF
A few years back I bought a couple of KB9YIG's little SDR receiver kits (one
still in use as a panadapter for my K3..). Tony was charging $15 each
including shipping, and at a UK equivalent of ~£8.50 there was no VAT
charged on arrival either.

Then WS began selling them but at a price around £30 (forget exact amount).
When challenged the response was convenience plus you got a cd of software
which was available anyway via download. Will be interesting to see their
pricing tactics of Elecraft gear.

[Elecraft] [K3] Temporary loss of rx/tx

2012-02-12 Thread GW0ETF
Twice last night I experienced a short lived loss of (rf) power. Everything
just went very quiet on receive and there was no rf output either. It was
the same on both receivers, all antenna inputs etc and there were no error
messages flagged.

Makes me suspect the 49MHz reference on the KREF3 board, or the tmp
connectors. I've poked around and can't get any repeat so I'm wondering if
there would be any other source of such a fault. Many moons ago I soldered
in place the oscillator module on that board as it was a bit wobbly in the
socket and I decided I wouldn't be upgrading to the high stab version; never
mis-behaved previously. Perhaps dirty contacts, but why no error messages??

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] Aliases in Softrock panadapter display

2012-01-20 Thread GW0ETF
Thanks for the replies so far. However none tell me anything new...

There seems two ways to sync K3 and software (NaP3 in this case):-
1/ Set Global Offset to zero and and the SDR LO frequency to what it
actually is, ~8192 Khz
2/ What you all seem to do is set SDR LO frequency to the K3 IF centre,
~8215 Khz and then fiddle about with the Global Offset to get the radio and
software to sync.

Yes, I can do either but in both cases the SDR LO=0Hz centre point will be
offset from the tuned signal by approx 23 Khz. This means that if the tuned
signal is centred, the extreme ~23 Khz of the side opposite the SDR Local
Oscillator will be in the alias region.

Try injecting a signal and tuning it across the display toward this region.
As it crosses this point it dies away to be replaced I assume by an alias
coming in from the opposite side (which is not visible). If the display was
chopped off here as in Rocky, or indicated by a change in background colour
that would be better.

As I said earlier I think this is no more than a niggle in an excellent
program but I feel my earlier post didn't get the message across...

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Internal Tuner Question

2012-01-02 Thread GW0ETF
John,

No harm to leave the external meter in line, just don't use it's readings..

I have a Palstar ATU in line for when I use my amp with my multi-band
doublet. When the amp is not switched in I'll often bypass the ATU and use
the KAT3. The swr meter in the Palstar atu is still in-line however and will
indicate forward and reflected powers consistent with whatever swr is on the
line between the KAT3 and antenna; the swr reading on the K3 is all that
matters in this case but the external meter is not doing any harm

Guys,

Thanks for all the replies to my original question below. Had a closer look
at what I have and the 'cleaner' is the D100L (Caig). I got them both from a
HiFi supplier in the UK in 2ml squeeze tubes...about £5 a throw but it goes
a long way!

May have mentioned this before but I use those small interdental brushes to
apply the stuff; if you get some of the really small ones you can get inside
the header sockets as well. This way just a few microlitres can coat
everything...

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Choice of filters in KRX3

2011-11-02 Thread GW0ETF
Robby,

I'm almost a 100% cw contester with a single antenna and I find SO2V of
limited but worthwhile use when run rate is dropping off. I always use full
break-in so when listening to the 2nd rx in the headphones you only hear
signals between your sent characters. This chopping makes it impossible to
copy callsigns so you have to have pick this up during gaps in sending; you
can then drop the call into the VFO B window with the '/' key (N1MM) to see
if it's a dupe. If it's not then at a suitable juncture simply press the
'Pause' button to swap VFos and focus, and hit Enter (ESM!) to send your
call, work 'em and then 'Pause' to move back to your run frequency (assuming
someone hasn't jumped on it while you've been away!).

I normally don't use cluster assistance; if I did SO2V would really be neat
as you could simply hotkey VFO B to each spot and work them between running
Qs. This is how I understand the use of SO2V so if anyone has
diferent/better ideas I'd be interested to hear them.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Strange Problem

2011-11-02 Thread GW0ETF
Don't forget the 'quality of PL259 plugs' issue that's has been mentioned on
here before. A while ago I nearly pulled my amp apart to check the input
relay to see if that was the cause of my intermittent 'Hi SWR' and no rx
signal problem. Problem was an intermittent mating of the PL259 centre pin
in the socket barrel; either the pin was slightly undersize or the barrel
had previously been expanded by a PL259 with too much solder on the pin.

[Elecraft] K3 - Allocating macros

2011-10-27 Thread GW0ETF
Been using macros for a long time but only just noticed the following..

When allocating a stored macro to one of the M* keys it appears to give me
the choice of Tap or Hold (eg 'M4H Set'). This would allow 8 to be stored in
M1-M4. However when stored in either Tap or Hold the macro is run whether
the key is tapped or held, no difference.

The stored macro also ignores Bank 1/2 selection ie written to both. Is this
the way it's supposed to happen?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Allocating macros

2011-10-27 Thread GW0ETF
Should have been a bit more thorough here 'cos I've just found a post from
Rich VE3KI from earlier in the year which goes a way to explaining. Seems
you can store in both Hold and Tap but if there's only one macro in an M key
(tap or hold) then it's run by just tapping.

This is neat as I've now got my macro to switch between the sub rx audio mix
A-Ab - Ab-Ab on one M key; it's now a quasi toggle action to swap by
either Holding or Tappingand leaves the others for the 3 voice messages
I'll need for this weekend's play in cqww.

Still wondering about the Bank 1/2 thing though

[Elecraft] K3 - Choice of filters in KRX3

2011-10-26 Thread GW0ETF
When I bought the 2nd receiver after it first came out I matched the main rx
with an 8-pole 250 Hz roofing filter. After several years now of SO2V
contesting and dx pile-ups I've never had the 2nd receiver wound down
anywhere near the point where this filter would be switched in. So I'm
wondering whether to liquidate this particular valuable little asset and
invest in something more useful...such as antenna hardware.

Before I do perhaps others could say how they think the 2nd rx should be
populated filter-wise, which presumably will vary with operating mode. I
don't tend to do the 'second op with separate headphones tuning the 2nd vfo'
scenario which is I assume where a full filter complement would be
useful.

Be interested in any opinions.73,

Ah yes, I'd forgotten all about diversity. Having said that I don't have
antennas for diversity here but going /P at a contest qth it could well be
*very* useful.

Thanks for the reminder Jon, one good reason to put it out on here...

Re: [Elecraft] T32C Kirimitati Island Dxpedition

Here my only antenna is a 100ft open wire fed doublet whose feed point is at
about 7m. T32C has only ever been very weak with me but I have managed 'em
on 17m and 30m cw with 100w. Not too many calls either though I made sure I
could always hear the qsx end, and the 2nd receiver helps.

When you do manage to hear them Dave give them a call; I'm sure they'll be

everywhere else I have listened, not just weak but simply not there.
QRP or not, I am obviously not going to work them if I cannot hear

[Elecraft] Deoxit contact cleaner for the frugal

2011-09-26 Thread GW0ETF
I've been using Deoxit to nail the problem of less than perfect connections
between the front panel and motherboard and the associated power-up error
messages on my early K3.

A 2ml tube over here costs around £6 uk pounds so I didn't want to be
splashing it on like after shave. I found those little interdental brushes
you can get from pharmacies etc are ideal; a drop of the stuff on the
bristles will coat loads of pins and the very fine ones will allow you to
clean inside the pcb sockets.

Still looking for a use for dental floss though - a couple of solar cycles
back the unwaxed stuff might have made great drive cord...

Re: [Elecraft] Deoxit contact cleaner for the frugal

2011-09-26 Thread GW0ETF
Bill,

I started with Deoxit 5 months ago. Until then I was used to removing the
front panel every few months and cleaning the contacts with alcohol to stop
the recurring error messages. No error messages since then though have had
the odd loss of pll lock while tuning which may or may not be poor contact
related. It's the old conundrum of proving a negative but so far so good.

I originally bought Deoxit Gold which I didn't realise was a 'contact
conditioner' rather than a cleaner and that is what I used back in May. I
was about to fit the DVR so decided to buy the standard Deoxit (cleaner) and
do the cleaning/conditioning as per instruction while I had the radio apart.
It's recommended to do a clean with Deoxit and then treat with Deoxit Gold
which it says will prevent the contacts losing condition. Just put it all
back together now so will wait to see if I'm problem free. Deoxit certainly
has a good press.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 err msgs on powr up?

2011-09-12 Thread GW0ETF
I have K3 #145 and this problem has plagued me plenty in the past. I now know
it *is* a problem with the FP connections as Wayne describes. I've more or
less stopped it by using Deoxit on the pins; clearly there is an issue with
oxidation(?) of the pin surfaces.

BTW, Jorge states the radio performs normally even when the errors appear.
Have you checked for example that the KAT3 works when Err AT3 appears, and
that you get 100w out when the PA error appears? Mine certainly didn't.

Re: [Elecraft] split operation et all

2011-08-05 Thread GW0ETF
For a step by step guide to this all you need is to read 'The Complete DXer'
by W9KNI..

You don't even have to buy it; just read the sample first chapter at
www.idiompress.com/books-complete-dxer.html. In English cricketing analogy
trying to work a split dx station without being able to hear the station in
the pile-up is like trying to hit the stumps from 25 yards blindfolded.

g3ymc wrote:

I have not actually been following this thread but I should add that
working split in pileups is an acquired skill. Just managed to grab a
QSO with ST0R on 17m CW this morning (5W to my bit of string...). In
this case the pileup was spreading 10kHz up the band and sounded
fierce. But he was actually listening and working everybody just 1kHz
up. Once I had realised that and ignored the hoardes calling elsewhere
it was very quick and easy, less than 5 minutes in all.

On the K2 I sit with one finger hovering over the A/B button listening
to both the DX and the pileup. I can easily follow who he is working
and where, and how he is tuning across the pile. Easy peasy, but takes
 time to get familiar with.

[Elecraft] K3 - Cross mode data

2011-06-08 Thread GW0ETF
Folks,

Spurred on by a renewed commitment to the monthly RSGB 80m data contests
where you work both rtty and psk31 I've belatedly sorted out SO2V with 2
digi windows in N1MM using one soundcard and afsk/data A on the K3.

You more or less maximise your score by working 50:50 psk31/rtty so thought
it might be neat to have one window set for psk and one for rtty and switch
between in N1MM but when that's done vfoB gets set to the data mode of vfoA
which screws things up ofcourse.

To simplify things I've just checked the K3 standalone and it seems you
can't have each vfo set to different modes within DATA and just wanted to
confirm that this is indeed the case. Certainly a minority operating style
and I could always use data A for rtty but that would preclude the use of
the dual p/b filter etc. Even if it were possible I haven't even thought
about whether split would work, about which much has been previously
written...

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] multiple error messages on start-up

2011-05-05 Thread GW0ETF
John,

I consider myself a bit of an expert in the multiple error messages on
start-up front! (do a search here on my callsign...)

After many months of headscratching, removing/replacing modules and even
replacing chips, it turns out in my case to be poor contacts in some of the
pins of the front panel connectors. My K3 #145 is not in a particularly
'hostile' environment but this will still crop up occasionally; removing the
front panel and a clean of the connectors with isopropanol always cures it
long term.

I get multiple errors and the reason you're only getting 12W out will almost
certainly be due an ERR PA1 in your list; nothing wrong with the PA module,
just the software thinking it's not there.

Good luck!

Re: [Elecraft] Fwd: K3 Failed DSP Firmware Download

2011-02-07 Thread GW0ETF

In the 3 years of running my K3 I can only remember once having to do a
forced reload and it was completely straightforward.don't understand the
stress this seems to generate.

Since moving to a netbook recently I've been rebooting my desktop every time
I wanted to do a firmware upload using a hardware serial port; but I do
remember in the past uploading through my Microham CW Keyer via Router with
minimal fuss (though can't remember the reason for the previous forced
upload...!). So when I needed to upgrade from v4.22 a couple of days ago I
thought I'd try the Router again and it went without a hitch and saved all
the booting up and swapping cables in the spider infested mess at the back
of my underdesk PC.

Ofcourse I went into the set up on Router and set to 'No Radio' and 'Disable
Router Queries'. You can if you wish store these settings under separate
profiles for a single click setup. If it doesn't work and you end up with a
'brick' I can always switch on my desktop PC and do a forced upload via
rs232 - what's the panic?

[Elecraft] k3 - AFX effectiveness

2010-12-07 Thread GW0ETF

Been having a fresh look at the AFX in view of the recent postings about
pulling out callsigns from pile-ups. It's been set to BIN for a long time
now and I remember this being quite effective at giving some spatial
separation to signals differing slightly in frequency when using stereo
headphones. However, now the effect seems to be much less noticeable than I
remember, and this with the same headphones and settings; turning AFX on and
off gives a definite change, but the spatial effect seems to much less.

I wonder how others see the effectiveness of AFX and particularly the BIN
setting. Pretty sure I haven't done anything to alter this; maybe I'll dig
out one of the much earlier firmware versions and see if it's maybe altered
over software upgrades.

[Elecraft] Love/Hate your K3

2010-11-29 Thread GW0ETF

Three hours into cqww the output power on my K3 started fluctuating wildly
and then went to zero. It happened last week too but recovered but this time
it looked final; after significant preparations for the contest and in the
middle of a freezing night I wasn't a happy person.

I'd sort of resigned myself to waiting a few hours and then driving 35 miles
to hopefully borrow a K3 from a friend who wouldn't be doing the contest;
first though I'd quickly check the reflector and to my delight up popped a
message describing this very fault, caused by the TMP cable coming loose
from the J7 connector on the KREF3 board (thanks N3CAQ..!). Off came the lid
to reveal a well seated cable but a nudge on J7 with a pen brought the rf
back to life! Mightily relieved I carried on and things were fine for a
couple of hours until the same thing happened; this time I removed the 2nd
receiver and took out the cable to test it and sure enough the meter across
the centre pins showed intermittent continuitygently flexing the cable
caused the connection to come and go.

Interested to speculate how long the cable has been faulty; this ancient
model (#145) has definitely showed power fluctuations in the past on
occasion but I've assumed a software source (can't explain it..? must be
software..!) so maybe it's been like it from new, don't know. The good news
was I remembered having a spare new TMP cable left over from the KRX3
fitting which I used and all was then back to normality. This now begs the
question of getting replacement TMP cables which I will pose to Aptos since
I assume they are custom made and I can't imagine a non-specialised crimping
tool doing the job.

Moral of this tale is check the reflector first, and watch your connections;
the few problems I've had over the years (including random error messages)
have all been traced to less than perfect contacts of one sort or another.

CQWW was excellent though I am considering claiming for an hours worth of
points from Aptos ;-) Thanks to all those calls familiar from here for the
Qs on 40m - I was sosb low power.

Be aware though that the DSP 'switches off' the EQ once you get to 100Hz and
below bandwidth. If you raise your cw sidetone frequency band as you suggest
and then wind down the bandwidth your signal will take a dive as you cross
the 100Hz point.

Don,

I'm using a Softrock IF kit (plus Z1B buffer amp) as a panadapter with a

the internal Realtek HD soundcard.

It runs LP Bridge, PowerSDR/IF and N1MM or Logger23 smoothly; with an extra
LCD monitor this gives me an integrated panadapter/logging system with a low
dollar computer. Maximum span is ~90KHz.

It's my normal mobile pc; I can take it to the shack, plug in a usb lead,
vga lead (if I want to use the LCD monitor), a mic lead and bring it out of
hibernate and I'm in business. Don't normally need the power supply unless
I'm in for a long contest.

Re: [Elecraft] WTB SoftRock SDR

2010-08-05 Thread GW0ETF

I do hope you find one Val because as a cheap alternative to a P3 it's
excellent.

I've had one for a while but the PC I was running PowerSDR/IF on was rather
old and clunky and it didn't run very well; it did have an internal PCI
M-Audio D66 soundcard though so it stayed something of a novelty rather than
a useful tool. But the other week just for grins I thought I'd see what
would happen if I tried my Samsung NC10 netbook with it's internal Realtek
HD soundcard and to my surprise found it works really well, giving me up to
about 90kHz audio bandwidth with no obvious spurs or images - and PSDR/IF
runs really well too. Can't seem to find any specs for these soundcards so
I'm not sure why it appears to work so well.

So my shack has now been re-configured around the netbook and LP-Bridge;
PSDR/IF sits on the netbook screen and my logger(s) on a second LCD monitor
behind it. Used it in a contest for the first time last weekend and found it
really useful, particularly for picking off stations off the second vfo.

But if you want to use the VFO A-B switching facility in eg N1MM for running

Tried other dummy loads too - curious why it should be showing high swr only

[Elecraft] [K3] QRQ/CW+ and split

2010-06-24 Thread GW0ETF

=
Note 1: There are limitations to QRQ CW mode at present. You cannot use
SHIFT, or turn on RIT, XIT, or SPLIT. However, you can still use splits, in
effect, if you have the sub receiver installed: Turn the SUB on, and use VFO
B as the receive VFO. (In a subsequent firmware release, RIT/XIT will be
usable over a small range in QRQ mode.)
=

Is the plan to eventually implement normal split with CW+?

To use SO2V in N1MM with the K3 requires using normal SPLIT. It would be a
pity not to be able to take advantage of the greatly improved keying with
CW+ at the higher speeds used in contesting.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] - Odd SWR readings ANT1 v ANT2

2010-06-14 Thread GW0ETF

Joe,

Just been playing with this some more and there does seem something odd
about 28MHz.

If I do as you instruct the swr does indeed now indicate 1:1 on bypass to a
dummy load. However if I turn on the ATU and 'tune' it to match to an
antenna and then go back and check bypass into the dummy load I get a high
reading again. It's as if invoking the ATU to match the antenna is wiping
the 50 ohm setting previously set up - all other bands seem fine. ANT1 and 2
behave the same...TUNE power by the way is 10 watts.

[Elecraft] [K3] Kite antennas and static protection

2010-06-13 Thread GW0ETF

Does the K3's built-in protection (surge arrestor and bleed resistor on each
rx input) obviate the need for external protection when using a big kite
antenna?

If it does, and in view of the inevitable advice *to* arrange for a DC path
to earth at receiver input whenever using a kite, I suppose an implied
question isis the K3 unusual in providing static protection at it's
inputs?

Thanks for the explanation Joe - that makes sense now and indeed after doing

Re: [Elecraft] K3 IO1 Error Message

2010-06-07 Thread GW0ETF

Chris,

Random error messages on boot up still plague me frequently. Normally I get
a whole series of them beginning with BP3 usually but they can vary. With me
Sub always works but ATU and 100w module doesn't until I've sorted it by
repeated power up cycles or just leaving on for a while and then turning off
and on. One time recently it took a good hour of trying before it turned on
correctly

I've never been able to figure out any logic to this; no connection with
temperature or the radio being moved, different firmware etc. The most
recent official release dealt with 'bus timing issues causing random error
messages on switch on..' but no real difference here and I'm pretty
convinced it's software and not hardware or seating problems, as when I've
got rid of the errors the radio works perfectly.

Just when I think the problem's here to stay and decide it's time to tackle
the support guys again the radio starts to behave and I don't bother but
it's quite frustrating when it's in a I'm not going to start up properly
mood.

This has been a long term issue for me on my K3 #145 eg see.

When it happens the errors just seem random though mostly it disables the

while and then power cycle again which usually fixes it. I find if I power
cycle immediately it doesn't go away most of the time. Weird isn't it??

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] kit building or buy ready for use

2009-12-21 Thread GW0ETF

Volker,

It only makes sense to buy factory built if you buy the K3 with all the
possible modules fitted otherwise you will be dis-assembling the radio to
fit other modules at some later date. A design philosophy of the K3 is being
able to buy the basic unit and upgrade as you can afford it or as the
dollar/euro/sterling rate becomes more favourable! Field upgrading is just
an extension of the kit rationale.

I bought #145 as a kit back in July 2007 and had to wait many months for the
second receiver which required a significant refit. Being an early unit I
have fitted several uprades and have had to replace a faulty main dsp board
too; knowing how it all went together in the first place made all this
straightforward and easy to do.

So if you have the time and don't have visual or physical impairment it's
not a problem at all. There's the extra security of knowing that the
finished unit has been tested in Aptos but even if/when a problem does arise
you will be talked through it step by step and receive board swaps as
necessary in a manner probably unique to Elecraft. My DSP board problem was
a minor one linked to the second rx and was sorted quickly and efficiently
but it did require me to swap out a couple of boards which were sent from
Aptos.

We are after all 'Radio Amateurs' so we shouldn't really have a problem with
screwdrivers and ESD mats, should we??

Re: [Elecraft] Thinking about KXR3

2009-12-09 Thread GW0ETF

Think you have that pretty much sorted Jim. I have an 8 pole 250Hz roofing
filter in my 2nd rx as I thought it would be good for 'mult-hunting' during
contests but in reality hardly ever use it.

Not sure how important it would be to insist on a matched 2.7KHz filter
either. Because the bandwidth is so high you can simply make the small
'centre frequency' adjustments in software without affecting performance
hardly at all; obviously more of an issue for the narrower filters...that's
my understanding anyway.

You'll really like having the 2nd receiver...have fun,

Since for now I plan on only using the KXR3 for split use in CW I
thought I'd just have the standard 2.7Khz in the sub and leave my
serious filters in the main where the DX or Fox is lurking. The sub
would be primarily for listening to the pileup.

In the remote chance I ever become proficient enough to be a Fox the
sub would be tuned to my transmit freq to listen for potential QRM

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3: killing RX key clicks

2009-12-02 Thread GW0ETF

My take is that in the extreme cw is an AM signal modulated by a pure square
wave and as such prduces infinite odd order harmonics which will appear as
sidebands/clicks. Filtering reduces the extent of the sidebands and smooths
the square wave shape particularly rise and fall times but you will still
have sidebands equivalent to 7th or 9th harmonics..? This would represent
the ideal and you would have to be very close to the signal to hear the
sideband energy - a bit of work on the calculator will tell you where the
7th or 9th harmonics would appear for a string of dits depending on the
keying speed etc.

But I'm convinced that most bad clicks are actually a result of spurious
switching spikes at the 'corners', often at the trailing edge and can
produce sideband energy *way* out from the fundamental. This is nothing to
do with the inherent physics of the cw signal and as such is curable.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 in the CQWW contest

2009-12-01 Thread GW0ETF

For a couple of years now, since getting K3 #145, I've had the impression
that activity in the big contests like CQWW has been dropping off because
now I don't seem to have problems finding a run frequency. Obviously it's
all down to the K3:-)

Ref key clicks.(bear with me!) I have relations who fish langoustine off
north west Scotland in an area used as a 'testing site' for the Royal Navy
nuclear submarine fleet. Here they analyse the sound spectrum emitted by new
or serviced engines so they can adjust the onboard system which emits
anti-phase sound to cancel the engine noise and so make them silent to other
vessels nearby.

So I wonder if it might be feasible to develop a system on the K3 to use the
2nd rx to listen to the offending signal and the software produce an
anti-phase 'key click' in the main receiving bandwidth to cancel the
clicks...?

Just an idle thought while the coffee is brewing.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 Error Message ERR AT3

2009-11-21 Thread GW0ETF

Hi Dave,

I too get this intermittently on my K3 #145. Probably been more frequent of
late and also disables the ATU though oddly it still responds to
checking/adjusting the LC settings from the menu ok - you can hear the
relays clicking but press the ATU button or ANT1/2 and no response...

However up till very recently I wouldn't get just ERR AT3; instead I would
get a whole series of random error messages which would include AT3...eg
BP1,IO3,AT3,BP3,IF2. When I cancelled each in turn by pressing buttons to
get back to 'normality' the only thing that seemed to be not working was the
ATU and if I recall correctly occasionally the Noise Blanker too; otherwise
all worked fine. Last couple of times though just the one error (AT3) has
appeared like you report.

Checked the AT3 seating and OK; also never had any problems with turning off
so maybe that's just coincidence with you. I did check with support a while
ago and suggested checking the KAT3 board seating - not a show stopper but
certainly is weird.

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] My Proposed K3 Configuration so far...(usb adaptors)

2009-11-19 Thread GW0ETF

From personal experience some 'cheap' usb-serial adaptors can produce
significant levels of rf hash. I don't need 'em at the moment but if I did
I'd probably go with the Elecraft one on the assumption it's been checked
for noise.

No point spending mega bucks on a top rate receiver and then degrading it
with a cheap little adaptor.

Stewart Rolfe, GW0ETF (K3 #145)

PS Can Wayne or Eric confirm that their usb adaptor *is* rf-quiet??

Re: [Elecraft] [K3] K3 - Intermittent Loss of RF Output

2009-10-16 Thread GW0ETF

Jeff,

Unstable rf power output has often been discussed here. It was a problem in
the early days (I have #145) but in my own experience has now largely
disappeared. However very occasionally it inexplicably reappears out of the
blue and I'll get a session of unstable output which like stocks and shares
can go up as well as down.

This morning I noticed the display on my Acom 1000 wobbling a bit which is a
sign; just once it suddenly shot up to f/s and then settled back down to
more or less normal. This is the first occurence for literally months. After
so much time I'm convinced it's not hardware/loads or rf getting into the
control circuitry...it's as if the software control has a migraine or
something.

It's never actually been so bad to actually stop me, even early on, so if
your instability is as bad as that on a new build it maybe a
physical/hardware issue. I'm sure the Support crew will help you out there.
Good luck

Steve,

Do you want a telnet connection for cluster spots? If so it's not quite as
simple and not described in the Help files afaik - you need to set up
Internet Connection Sharing on the Master (0) computer. I wrote down the

the file if you want.

If you don't want an internet connection it's quite straightforward and

I did just that and fully support what Rick says below about the 1000.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 VFO tuning hash

2009-06-28 Thread GW0ETF

Wayne et al,

I too can confirm the existence of what intuitively sounds like encoder
clicks on the bottom end of 10m as well as the lower ends of 15 and 6m. Most
times they are masked by antenna noise (and some pc low level hash here on
6...!) but it does seem to vary in 'severity' so I was interested in your
comments about I/O devices etc. The bottom end of 10 does seem consistently
the worst though.

A couple of observations from here:-

1/ When switched on both RIT and SUB encoders produce clicks.
2/ The Main encoder produces clicks also in the SUB rx and vice versa.
3/ SHIFT/LO and HI/WIDTH controls also produce clicks.

DSP helps and ofcourse it doesn't ultimately interfere with a qso. I've only
noticed this since using 10m and then not all the time and I've yet to
double check the mechanics/wiring inside the radio.

[Elecraft] K3 - N1MM, footswitch and ESM action

2009-06-22 Thread GW0ETF

This is probably an N1MM issue but thought someone on here may have something
useful to say

I finally got round to properly setting up the dual transceive SO2V on my K3
for N1MM and it seems to work a treat. I can now have the 2 entry windows
open with VFO A running and B set for SP on the sub receiver frequency;
CTRL Left/Rt Arrows flick between A and B (invoking SPLIT for B to tx on
the sub qrg) and while running I can hit \ to put an SP call in the VFO B
box to check for a dupe etc.

Just one minor annoyance/oddity; I use ESM all the time (mainly cw here) and
have a footswitch on an LPT port set for ESM ENTER. But it appears the
footswitch only acts on VFO A which is normally set up for running. So if
I've swapped to VFO B to SP someone and then hit the footswitch to send my
call (F4) the focus swaps back to A and I end up calling CQ on my run
frequency instead. No problems if I use the keyboard ENTER key. I've tried
changing the LPT Radio number from 1,2 to Both etc but no difference.

Any ideas folks? I'm assuming it's an N1MM issue so it's also gone onto the
N1MM Yahoo board.

Re: [Elecraft] CQ Contest

2009-06-03 Thread GW0ETF

Dave,

I too operated SOSB20 as GW6W last weekend and concur with your observations
including being slightly uneasy at times at being able to slot in so close
to neighbouring signals - didn't suffer any 'band rage' though so presumably
they would be using something decent too. We were in the middle of a heat
wave and the ambient temperature in my small shack with the Acom 1000
running continuously was in the 80s (F) most of the day hours but FP and PA
temps were fine and I stopped checking them after a short time.

Contesting with the K3 filtering is a joy; but last March I took the K3 to
the Gambia and had some big pile-ups from C56ETF. It was my first dxpedition
experience and I imagined I would be using the narrowest filtering to tune
progressively through the split pile-up; what I actually found much
better/easier was to use a relatively wide filter setting and pick out the
signals from the 3D space between my ears with the AFX. Did wonder what the
throng thought of my erratic jumping around compared to the probably more
normal progression from high to low or vice versa.

Region 1 Field Day is this weekend and K3s will be in action from GW4TTA/P.
There's a pic from last year's SSB field day featuring some Elecraft gear -
  www.radioclubs.net/dragonarc/articles.php?articles_id=341 - and no it
isn't SO3R.

David Gilbert wrote:

I operated SOSB20 in CQ WPX this past weekend and gave the K3 a pretty
good workout. I made 1300+ contacts but that pales in comparison to the
zillions of times I repetitively hit the F1 key. My wife and I have been
building our own home the past few years and we still don't have the air
conditioning functional, so the ambient temperature in the shack was right
at 80 deg F much of the day. I set the K3 to continuously monitor PA
temp, and even with the relatively large duty cycle I was giving the rig I
never saw it go above 47 deg C.

The other very impressive thing was the narrow filter. I used a 250 Hz
8-pole filter with the DSP set to 250 Hz, and it was like a knife edge. I
could operate within a couple hundred Hz of most S9+20 stations and never
hear them --- unmodified Yaesu rigs being the exception (there are still
some HORRIBLE sounding clicks out there). Whether those stations heard me
was probably a function of whether they were using a K3 or not ;) The
downside was that I had to ride the RIT most of the time ... I had a LOT
of people call me pretty far off frequency and the only way I could tell
they were there was by the rhythm of their key clicks unless I swept back
 and forth with the RIT.

Which brings up a side observation ... there is so much disparity now
between the performance of various rigs that it seems possible to generate
some misconceptions regarding operating skill and courtesy. I wonder how
many times other stations thought I was deaf or couldn't copy their CW
merely because they couldn't zero beat my signal within 150 Hz or so? And
I wonder how many people thought I was a LID for calling CQ too close to
them on what was for me a clear frequency because they didn't have as
tight a filtering as I did? To minimize the latter, I usually opened up
the bandpass a bit when looking for a clear frequency, but the folks with
500 Hz filters and no roofing filters would have still had trouble.

Re: [Elecraft] NB/NR Noise Blanker/ Noise reduction

2009-04-28 Thread GW0ETF

If I look at the audio response in Spectrogram while feeding in a noise
source at the antenna the trace shows definite nulls when NR is switched in.
In SSB at max width (2.7kHz) the number of nulls vary with the settings as
follows:
F1-# 9
F2-# 7
F3-# 4
F4-# 3

As # is increased from 1 to 4 at each F setting the depth of the nulls
decreases and it's almost flat at #4. However RF gain and AGC slope settings
drastically affect the depth of these nulls but at maximum the nulls are
about -30db which would presumably affect the 'loudness' of a signal if it
happened to fall in one of the holes? I don't have time at the moment to
investigate further how the AGC settings affect the nulls but backing off
the RF gain definitely flattens the response.

According to Lyle back in 2007 the F parameter indicated the number of taps
(?) in the adaptive filter and the second number the amount of signal 'bleed
through' to reduce distortion effects. I'm not sure my limited knowledge of
dsp and filters ties this in with what I see in Spectrogram.

Having said this I must admit I tend to use filtering in preference to NR
even though I seem to be able to get NR to work pretty well.

Air dusters can emit solvent especially when full or shaken/used upside down

safer now - and less harmful to health and environment.

I have a question about removing dust particularly on circuit
boards...I'm wary of inducing static by blasts of air or physical
brushing with bristles and I know you can buy expensive vacuum cleaners to
clean out the inside of IT equipment to avoid static damage; all the tools
and tubing contain carbon to prevent the build up high air friction induced
voltages which could fry sensitive ICs. So as my K3 #145 ages and needs a
wash and brush up I wonder what is the safest way to remove the dust and
spiders from inside?

Not exactly on message Mike but don't forget the handy feature of being able to

Re: [Elecraft] Your Opinion: The realit..

2009-03-13 Thread GW0ETF

Talking of birds Julian and qrp I've just returned from the Gambia where I
did some 20m cw as C56ETF. The pile-ups were impressive but I still kept my
binoculars next to my key to check out that new one in the trees outside the
balconynever had to contend with avian qrm before either - some of them
are *so* loud both in looks and call!

I was pleasantly surprised at the number of qrp stations I worked in the
pile-ups. I never seemed to wind the K3's filtering right down in split,
preferring instead to use the excellent AFX to pluck out stations calling
slightly off the main frequency and that way I could detect the occasional
..QRP.. from the rabble. When the rest of the pile-up finally realised I
wasn't going anywhere until I worked the 'QRP' guy I was able to complete.
Wasn't aware I missed any qrp that called.

Same with radio. It's nice to work something unusual but if I can't do it
with moderate power and antennas I'm not bothered about it.

Anyone can work a long distance with high power and a huge antenna. What
never stops being amazing is when someone hears you from thousands of
miles away and you're using barely enough power to light a torch bulb.

Even the guy at the other end whose antenna, receiver and ears make the
contact possible, can still appreciate the wonder of that.

It'd be nice to be able to run the legal limit into a big beam, but I bet
if I could I'd soon get bored with it.

[Elecraft] K3 - KRX3/Main receiver isolation

2009-02-06 Thread GW0ETF

Just curious...

Anyone know any numbers describing signal isolation between the 2 receivers?
Playing with Spectrogram indicates -70dB but can't say how much if any of
that is cross talk in the cable or soundcard (SB Audigy). The signal in the
sub rx channel of LINE OUT is seen and measured when the sub is 'Off'; if
the sub is thereby de-powered and isolated the sigals observed are
presumably due to passive leakage??

Not found anything in manuals/elecraft.com and got bored googling for
channel isolation in the soundcard

John,

I had the following from Vic K2VCO in response to a post by me about Noise
Reduction and RX Equalisation settings - I had it boosted at the cw sidetone
frequency to give an accentuated effect with NR but found my audio dropped
when I reduced the b/w beyond the 150 Hz point. So you may want to
check/play with your RX Eq settings

This is not the best approach because of the following: when the 50 and
100 Hz DSP filters are enabled the RX EQ is disabled (I forgot the
reason for this, but Lyle explained it to me). So the effect of
narrowing the bandwidth is that the signal suddenly drops several dB!

If you want to use the RX EQ for this the best way to do it is to leave
the desired bands at 0 dB and *reduce* all others by the amount of
'boost' that you prefer.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 temperature

2009-01-26 Thread GW0ETF

Since K3 #145 has had it's sub receiver the forward area of the right hand
side panel seems to get a little warmer and I've assumed this is due to the
sub rx or second dsp drawing extra through the 2 voltage regs bolted to that
panel. Shows it's all working ok since the panel is the heatsink for those
devices.

I don't understand how you could suspect the sub rx of increasing the PA
temperature if everything has been installed correctly.

BTW: I took part in a local RTTY contest for the first time the other
evening and was a little concerned about running full power despite
reassurances here. Running about 95 watts for 90 contest minutes I kept an
eye on the PA temperature and it never went above 46 deg; I put my hand over
the back once or twice and the fans seemed to be running but only slowly.
I'm now reassured.

The aux DSP adds around 100 mA even when the sub receiver is turned

module itself adds nearly zero current when turned off, and I don't
believe it could cause any increase in temperature since just due to
its location above the RF board. When turned on, the KRX3 adds about
 150-200 mA.

[Elecraft] K3 - Tx power in digi modes

About to (finally) try out some RTTY/PSK31 using soundcard AFSK A/DATA A

Re: [Elecraft] k3 matching filters

2008-12-21 Thread GW0ETF

I didn't bother about paying/asking for matched default filters for my KRX3.
The one in the main board has a -0.93kHz offset and the one in the KRX3 is
-0.83kHz.

Shifting them both to -0.88kHz seems to make no difference to performance -
would you expect a 50Hz shift in a nominal -6dB b/w of ~2.7kHz to be that
noticable anyway?

However the wondering 'beat' between right and left channels disappears
completely when you doctor the offsets - just need a nice big Beverage
now.

Lyle Johnson wrote:

I think you may have received the wrong filter. At this point, I'd
install the new filter in the KRX3, but set the Main and KRX3 offsets to
-0.95 (split the difference). 20 Hz is not going to make a practical
difference in any operational sense that come sot mind.

Re: [Elecraft] Transport Case for K3 - for UK?

Yesterday I bought a 'Flight Case' from Maplin here in the UK - it is p/n
N70AP. I haven't yet cut the foam to fit but even without the foam in place
the K3 barely moves around as it is gripped lightly between the foam in the
lid and the bottom of the case which is covered in a thin layer of high
density foam. It's slightly larger than the K3 footprint but means I should
also be able to fit in my Microham CW Keyer and Bencher paddle.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality; seems strong enough, is lockable
and is well padded inside even without the foam block. Best bit is the price
- £14.99 though apparently this is 50% off til Xmas eve. If the pound drops
any further it may even make sense for US (and EU..) users to buy direct
from over here!

Take the top cover off the radio Charlie and check for nearby connecting
wires contacting the fans - when they do you get an alarming buzz but if the
degree of contact is very slight I presume it may just sound like a 'normal'
noisy fan. The K3 fans are completely noiseless.

BTW you don't have to wait for the temp to rise to check the fans 'cos there
is a menu entry (Config - KPA3...??) where you can test the 4 speed settings
of the fans. I always check this after being inside the radio to make sure I
won't get a fright half way through a sessions when the fans come on

[Elecraft] K3 - CW Sidetone in Dual Receive

2008-12-01 Thread GW0ETF

Christened my freshly installed KRX3 at GW0GEI (M2) for the weekend cqww. It
arrived just in time (ordered February 1...) and was fitted without incident
the previous weekend; the K3 and (qsk) Acom 1000 worked flawlessly for the
whole 48 hours.

I found the whole 2 receiver thing an interesting and new experience. Being
able to hold a run frequency with pc sent CQs while scouring the band for
mults/unworked with the second rx was really useful particularly late on the
Sunday when runs got slower. Not really sure if I was using the best method
but it would involve tracking a potential contact on the KRX3/right ear, a
quick Alt-F10 (N1MM) to swap sub to main (right to left ear..), work 'em and
Alt-F10 again to resume.

So here's a question/comment.to me it would make sense if you could have
the cw sidetone only in the left earpiece when operating dual receive.
Bearing in mind my position on the learning curve and lack of sleep, I was
sometimes losing track of which signals on either side of my head I was
transmitting to which lead to the occasional muddle - multitasking has never
been my strong point but I definitely felt keeping the sidetone associated
with the transmit frequency would have been handy.

Apparently the key term is SMOC - so if it *is* just a small matter of
coding I wonder what others more versed in the black art of dual receive
think?

73,

Stewar Rolfe, GW0ETF (K3 145)

PS - Nice to work you Hank (K8DD) on 20m; over here 20 and higher were very
poor, 80 was terrific but 40m was the place to be.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 keying

2008-11-27 Thread GW0ETF

Barry,

Shortening of characters in QSK is a common issue in many transceivers
though it seems less of a problem in the K3. What you should really use to
combat it is 'Keying Compensation' which you will see in for example Winkey
configuration settings and other external keyers; it lengthens each
character by a fixed amount (x millisecs) and is independent of keying speed
and is designed specifically for this problem. Think I'm right in saying the
K3 internal keyer doesn't have this adjustment (yet?).

When I checked my K3 on my 'scope the shortening in qsk looked pretty
minimal but I find a setting of 3ms makes the (Winkey) keying feel 'sweeter'
so that's what I use...

73 and look out for you this weekend at GW0GEI (M2)

Barry Simpson wrote:

No one has commented on the apparent shortening of the first dit as

My K3 keying does not have that issue as far as I can judge from listening
 on a separate receiver.

What is does have is a disparity between keying weighting between MOX
(either front panel switch or foot switch) and VOX/QSK.

Compared with MOX which has characters about the same length as my other
rigs on my keyer's 50% weighting setting (ie it is about right) the
characters in VOX and QSK are shortened.

I simply overcome it by altering my weighting to 58% and not using MOX. I
note that Elecraft deal with the same issue by having the weighting set at
 1.15 in the config menu.

Not a real problem - just an observation.

Looking forward to giving the K3 a good workout this weekend.

Re: [Elecraft] K3 NR (was making K3 RX audio like K2)

2008-11-20 Thread GW0ETF

Not sure what mode is being referred to here, but I will assume CW as this is
the mode most suited to NR.

I find RX EQ settings have a significant effect on NR; I have boosted the
400-800Hz channels a few dB and that causes the cw note to appear to 'jump
out at you' under NR along with reduction in the noise. Can't remember NR
settings but it's not extreme and I aim for least echoing and character
softening...

I also had an FT990 before the K3. It was a great radio but I don't find
myself hankering after it's hifi audio while listening to my K3; I'm sure
the overall audio quality was no worse than the K3 but as with the K3 I only
ever used the internal speaker - one less potential rfi path for one thing.
Can't do an A/B comparison because I eventually sold it to finance the
purchase of a KRX3, which incidentally is scheduled for delivery today(!)

Wish me luck because I plan to fit asap and have it all running for
cqww.

of the K3. Coming from a Yaesu FT990 with a Heil Clear Speech speaker,
the sound was smoother and less fatiguing. Moving the shift to a value
of FC= 1.2 or so might help. I'm also hoping that more work will be
done on the Noise Reduction. In each of the four groups of NR the 1 and
2 settings just seem to lower the signal and noise together while
settings 3 and 4 do a much better job of reducing noise but with an
adverse effect of a tunnel and echo sound. Is it just my radio or do
 others have the same problem?

Re: [Elecraft] K3 NR (was making K3 RX audio like K2)

Vic,

You probably won't be using NR at these narrow bandwidths anyway; it's been
explained before by Lyle and quoted in the message in this thread from Bill
W4ZV:

NR is rarely useful if the bandwidth is narrow. If you set your CW width
to 400 Hz or less, for example, there is no point in running NR *unless* you
want to use it as a sort-of smart squelch.

Thinking about it I never feel the need to use NR when the bandwidth is
cranked right down so it sort of makes sense

tone frequencies certainly does cause a drop in signal when the dsp
bandwidth crosses from 150 to 100Hz, NR or no NR. (and conversely cutting
those frequencies leads to a sudden increase in signal at the crossing point
- it's quite dramatic)

Glad I found this out before cqww but a little bemused as to why this
'feature' hasn't been better circulated; I've been using my K3 for a year
now and have never seen mention of this. Thanks for the heads up Vic (I
think that's the term...!)

settings but it's not extreme and I aim for least echoing and character
 softening...

[Elecraft] [K3] - KRX3 filter choice

2008-11-13 Thread GW0ETF

Just had a Katiegram for my KRX3 which was ordered on February 1st:-)

At the moment my K3 has additional 500Hz (5 pole) and 250Hz (8 pole) filters
but I've ordered an 8 pole 400Hz to go with the KXR3; thought I may move the
500Hz 5 pole to the KXR3 and have both 8 pole filters in the main receiver.

Wondering now if I should instead go for another 500Hz 5 pole roofing filter
for the KXR3 and have it matched to the original? Would this make sense
should I want to use diversity rx (apologies - haven't really studied
this...)? The email says they can supply a matched unit for an extra $30 so
the cost would be the same.

Any comments before I confirm the order??

Stewart Rolfe, GW0ETF (K3 #145)

PS. Next dilemma may be whether to fit before CQWW or would that be just
tempting the Gods of fate way too much?!!

[Elecraft] K3 - 'Unwanted' TX Gain calibrations?

2008-09-23 Thread GW0ETF

Been wondering just how the TX Gain calibration works. To quote from the
manual -

The gain constant is updated whenever the TUNE function is activated on a
given
band at one of three specific power levels: 5.0W, 50W, and 1.00 milliwatt.

So if I'm adjusting my external ATU by TUNE(ing) at say 5watts, will the
(LP)Tx gain constant be updated while feeding into an unspecified load. The
described procedure requires the use of a dummy load to set the gain
constant; if the load isn't 50 ohm resistive will the constant be set to
some anomalous figure which may not be updated when the atu eventually
presents (hopefully) 50R to the K3??

Just curious

Interesting your speculation about firmware alignment - I can do repeated 5w

Bjorn,

I posted about this very problem a couple of months ago but had virtually no
feedback so it's interesting to hear of someone else being affected. As you
say the power would drop quite suddenly then come back up; when running an
amp it once went right up to ~100w even though set for about 35w - it
tripped the amp

Seems to do this on phone too but cw is easiest to see when it's happening.
To be honest it has hardly happened to me at all recently and I wonder if
you have the latest firmware installed. I did contact Elecraft support and I
seem to remember they said it was an AlC control software problem and to
keep downloading the latest firmware which would eventually sort it, and as
I say it seems much better now here. However the other day I was on phone
and the power was all over the place; it then started giving me TXG Error
messages and I had to do the 5 and 50 watt power output config from start to
finish which seemed to fix it.

Good luck in the contest - family duties here else I would be giving away

Barry,

Character shortening in QSK seems to be common in many radios but is
normally a function of qsk v semi break-in as well as manual ptt. Most good
external keyers offer 'keying compensation' in msecs to offset this; my
FT990 needed as much as 8ms extra on the characters to give a 1:1 dit ratio
in qsk v semi break-in.

Just done a quick 'scope check here using my Microham cw keyer and the
results are 'inconclusive'. In qsk the space is actually slightly less if
measured from the end of the fall to the start of the rise, but slightly
more if the dit is measured across the 'top' ignoring the rise/fall time. I
forgot to check using the internal keyer but this seems pretty good to me.

Having said all that I see that I have configured my Winkeyer with 3ms
'keying compensation' which was done on the basis of it sounding a little
choppy previously.

Hi David,

Generating cw directly from a (Windoze..?) pc is usually bad news. Windows
always has priority and will interrupt cw keying when it needs to do
something else; the result can be awful cw which can be embarrassing in a
contest.

Winkey takes the data from the pc as ascii (I think..) and generates it's
own perfectly timed characters independantly of the computer with which to
key the radio. A Microham keyer uses Winkey which also accepts paddle input
- this means that the cw sent from your pc (eg from N1MM) will always be at
the same speed and setup as that sent from the paddles, one speed knob
controls both.

I tend to use my Microham cw keyer all the time but admit the keyer in the
K3 is excellent.

seemed to calibrate well and work perfectly except for the 100 watt
PA. When running 12 watts or less (8 watts on 6m) output is good and
stable. When power is set higher which causes the 100 W PA to turn
on, output power is not stable. On 20m thru 6m with key down the
power output takes about 6 or 7 seconds to stablize. For example,
when the power control is set for 50 watts it first comes up to 35
watts, then slowly goes up to 60 or 70 watts, then slowly comes down
to 50 watts where is is stable. It seems like the power control
zero's in on the correct power but very slowly. With CW it never
gets there. This happens every time the key is opened and then closed
again. On 40m the same thing happens but there is about a 3 second
delay after key closure before any output is seen. There is no power
output at all on 80m and 160m even though with less than 12 watts
set on the power control there is normal power output. I haven't had
the time to look into the schematic yet so thought I'd see if any of
the list readers have had a similar experience or may have some idea
of a good place to start. Thanks, Al K7CA

Al,

There have been posts previously about erratic power output but maybe not
describing such an extreme situation as yours - no output (high) at all on
some bands suggests something more serious than erratic power control:-(

I have occasionally found the power output to suddenly start changing (CW)
but it has happened only rarely and never sure if it is connected to a
software upgrade or not. Mostly it manifests in the power indication
dropping from the '100 watt' level to anything from 35 watts to 80 but it
always seems to recover quickly; it is a genuine power variation as checked
against an external power meter. Once when I was using my amp it went the
other way and increased up towards full power which meant I was briefly
knocking out about 1200 watts - I wondered whether Elecraft would bail me
out if a man in a grey suit came knocking complaining about me operating
outside my licence conditions...:-)

It happened again fairly recently and I went back to the last full firmware
version (2.02 I think) and I've not noticed it since. I'm not convinced
though that it is linked to software but I've not even thought about
hardware yet 'cos I'm waiting for a KRX3 which will involve some dismantling
and checking of connections etc.

Can't be a widespread problem though in view of the dearth of posts on this
but it does seem to exist and hopefully if it is a 'real' problem compared
to dodgy contacts somewhere, it will be resolved soon. I do wonder if the
lack of reporting is because of the fact that it will be much more obvious
in CW and may well go unnoticed in ssb.

Good luck,

Actually, there is a (subtle) indication ... the TX icon blinks when in TX

Personally I would like the TX icon to blink at a faster rate than it does.
Don't know much about peripheral perception etc but I find it easy to miss
the 'blink' and sometimes start calling someone when in TEST mode. (I
normally have the computer monitor in front and K3 to one side)

A minor point but on the other hand something that would presumably be easy
enough to change if others felt similar..?

RE: [Elecraft] K3 full power strange behaviour

2008-06-27 Thread GW0ETF

Just been operating cw on 80m at 100w and after a while of 'everything
normal' I noticed the power dropping and then coming back up...one time it
went as low as 24w and then jumped back up. Power indication on VFO B
follows the power drop, SWR seems ok but I confirmed it was doing same into
a dummy load; PA temp was showing about 39 C only.

Seem to remember the same sort of thing happening a while ago but so long
ago I can't remember if it disappeared with a firmware change or what.

[K3] [Elecraft] [k3] Wattmeter calibration

2008-06-27 Thread GW0ETF

Finally I got round to checking the wattmeter calibration as I've felt it's
been giving out power levels below what the wattmeter on the front panel
reports ever since I've had it.

First alerted when my Acom 1000 seemed to giving low output until I saw the
amp's input reporting a significantly lower driving power eg 35w as against
a K3 setting of 45w into a dummy load. Also 2 independant power meters
seemed to agree even though admittedly they weren't lab standard.

So I did the configuration while measuring voltage across a dummy load with
my 40MHz 'scope and found I needed to wind the WMTR HP setting way down to
minimum (010) to get the power up to 50 watts on the 'scope (and yes I did
remember the RMS to peak conversion ;-). Seeing that the default setting is
100 I thought I might ask others what setting seems to be the norm.

Needless to say I've not noticed anything odd about running 80 or 85 watts
instead of 100 these past few months but (wrong) numbers do have a habit of
bugging you eventually

Re: [Elecraft] K3 noise reduction

2008-06-20 Thread GW0ETF

I'd recommend a read of Lyle's description of NR in the FAQ and also in
'Operating Tips'. From this it's clear this sort of adaptive filtering is
going to be most effective for CW.

I've been using it with F2-3 setting and it works fine for me (on CW). On
signals other than very weak ones (which Lyle points out could be adversely
affected by NR), the audio actually appears to increase a notch if anything.
There is a small amount of distortion on the audio with the most noticeable
being a softening of the cw characters which will make copying slightly more
problematic in difficult conditions.

Having said all that I still use filtering first and foremost before falling
back on things like NR; and to comment on the suggestion that NR should
remain on after switch off, I remember ages ago Eric or Wayne saying they
specifically designed the NR *not* to remain on as folk were contacting them
complaining their receiver had died when they switched their K3 back on and
not hearing any background hiss - the NR is that good! Anyway it's only one
button press to turn it back on...

Dave Martin-3 wrote:

I've about given up too, Windy. The NR must be only for the CW ops.
I'm about ready to order one of the speakers with NR and see if it's
any better. If it is, I might as well be using it with my Drake
instead. What we have now seems about as effective as the NR on the
low end Icoms that I've had, which is minimal. That's the only other
NR I've used. Are any of the other radios any better? Maybe some
owners of the competing brands could comment.

I think that one of the happier things about the K3 is the continuing
hope of greater performance and features. Nothin' like hope. It
 keeps us going.

 Dave W5DHM

Yes, I'd hope for further improvement of the NR on phone. Even if
it's not too effective I still nearly always have it on, but the radio
powers up with it off and blasts me with the increased audio. It
seems like it would be nice if it powered up with the NR in the same
state it was before. Is this a problem for anyone else?

Re: [Elecraft] RSGB RadCom K3 review posted on RSGB Members web page

2008-06-18 Thread GW0ETF

I don't understand why the IMD figures worsen as the roofing filter narrows.
Also I've always been led to understand that the signal spacing likely to
cause IMD problems is roughly 0.25 of the roofing filter bandwidth assuming
a narrow final passband. On this basis, and even allowing for responses down
to the -60dB level (say 5kHz for the 2.7K filter...) none of the quoted
signal spacings should be 'getting through' any of the roofing filters
listed. So at these spacings the IMD response should be a function only of
the pre first mixer circuitry which doesn't explain (to me!) the significant
variations with roofing filter.

I'm sure I'm missing something here, perhaps about how these things are
actually measured; anyone care to put me right?

Yes, and also the 8-pole 1.8k should be better than the 5-pole 2.7k. Some
very strange results indeed but I'm sure Peter is reporting what he's
measuring. I cannot find his original Orion review but I recall it showed
the 2.4k 4-pole and 1.8k 8-pole to be much better than the 1.0k 4-pole at
2 kHz spacings, which again did not make sense unless the 1k filter was
 defective.

by Lyle KK7P Dec 22, 2007; 03:31pm ::
The NR has changed with time and may continue to do so. As a result,
the manual is general in its treatment. The overall rule is more is more.

NR is more properly Signal Enhancement rather than Noise Reduction. The
distinction is subtle but important if you wish to understand how it
works and how to best apply it. If ti were noise reduction, the
implication is that it passes everything until it figures out what is
more likely to be noise, which it then attempts to suppress. Since it
is signal enhancement, it tends to pass nothing until it figures out
that which is more likely signal, which it then attempts to pass.

With this understanding there is one more concept I must explain:
correlation.  This is the degree to which a signal is similar to itself;
conversely, it can be used to figure out how noise is dis-similar to
itself (more random). This is the basis on which NR works.

In the current implementation of the K3, we have four (4) basic NR
filters. These are displayed as F1..F4. F1 is the gentlest, F4 the
most aggressive. Recalling that the filters tend to suppress everything
until they can sort out what is probably a signal, there is some time
delay involved in their application. Further, especially with voice
signals, some components of the signal may not be recognized as well as
others. THis gives rise to distortion.

So, we added a second field to the NR. This is the -1..-4 which
specifies a certain amount of bleed through of the original signal.
This reduces the apparent distortion and delay, but limits the ultimate
S/N improvement. -1 provides the least distortion but limits the S/N
improvement on weak to moderate signals to about 6 dB. -4 provides no
mixing whatsoever and can result in dramatic S/N improvements, but at
a cost of slight time delays and increased distortion.

NR is not appropriate for very weak signals, so a -1 or -2 is best if
you wish to hear them.

Having saids al this, the correct way to use the NR is to listen and
adjust it for the best compromise between noise reduction and
distortion. Everyone is different in this regard. Some tolerate noise
better than others, while some don't tolerate distortion very well at all.

I live in a quiet location, and use NR1-2 as my most common setting.
This is low in distortion, allows me to hear weak signals, and shows no
apparent delay as I tune through the bands. On the rare occasions when
things get noisy here, I crank it to higher values.

Probably a much longer answer than you wished.

Merry Christmas,

Lyle KK7P
