[Elecraft] K3 DATA A vs USB for JT65/JT9
I have been running DATA A with my SignaLink USB for JT65 JT9 using WSJT-X. However I am now having some problems (interfacing with other rig control software) that are making me question why I settled on DATA A rather than USB? Other than the fact DATA A inherently eliminates all potential audio settings that might cause problems if USB was used, which seems like a big plus to me. Are there any other reasons why DATA A is preferred for the data modes? I have run DATA A successfully for at least 5-6 years and being a creature of habit, I hate to switch to USB unless I am forced to. Anyone have convincing arguments pro or con about this question I am willing to hear them. P.S. [Elecraft] KPA500-KAT500-K3 problem
My K3-KAT500-KPA500 has been working fine for 5 weeks now. (added the KPA500 Nov. 10, 2014) Last night I had to move some cables around with in the rats nest behind my K3. Unrelated cables, so I thought, they were for the VGA output for the P3 to add a data switch before the external monitor. After the move everything was still working just as it should. I shut down for the night. When I turned everything on this morning the K-Line has started acting strange. The K3 no longer flashes the KPA500 line across the VFO B window. I have CONFIG: PWR SET = Per Band, *BUT* the K3 no longer has 2 power settings (one for KPA500 in op and one for KPA500 in stby) However the KPA500 *does* change bands with the K3's change of Bands. The K3 does flash the KAT500 line in the VFO B window. The KAT500 does change antennas as related to the band it is on. The KAT500 no longer knows I have moved the K3's frequency within a band, so no longer (pretunes) to that new frequency. and Yes CONFIG: KAT3 shows KAT500y The KAT500 tunes fine when it is in AUTO and sees rf. I even went back to a previously saved K3 configuration. I unseated and reseated the KAT500 to KAT500 Cable. To summarize, I have lose the safety feature of the K3 knowing it has a KPA500 so it doesn't have 2 drive levels, and the KAT500 no longer pretunes to a new frequency when the K3 is moved to the new frequency within the same band. We know that the band lines on the AUX cable are working just fine since both KAT and KPA follow the K3 band. both boxes get the band from the BAND lines and not the AuxBus (note for Sam - the KPA does not listen to the AuxBus, only talks. The KAT does both). So, check the cable from the K3 to the KAT. Pin 2 appears not to be conveying data. You might want to pull it and ohm it out. Also note that this must not be a VGA cable, but a straight-through connection with no lines shorted together. But you already knew that... We will get you going shortly. Can someone direct me to where in the K3 manual it explains what these settings mean and/or when to use NR or NRm? Thanks. Gene, W2BXR K3 Owners Man D10.pdf pg 6 pg 15 pg 25 quote Noise Reduction Noise reduction reduces random background noise while preserving meaningful signals. It adds a characteristic “hollow” sound to all signals. NR turns noise reduction on. It doesn’t apply to DATA or FM modes, or with AGC turned off. Hold ADJ to display the NR setting, which is saved per-mode. Use the VFO B knob to tailor NR for the present band conditions. In general, the higher the number, the more aggressive the noise reduction. Settings F1-1 through F4-4 are recommended. F5-1 through F8-4 use a different algorithm, where the -x part of the setting indicates the degree of mix between the DSP-processed and unprocessed signals (-1 is about 50% processed, -4 is 100%). A small M appears to remind you that a Mixed setting is in effect, e.g. NRM F5-1. /quote also from: http://www.elecraft.com/K3/K3FAQ.htm quote How does the Noise Reduction work? NR depends on correlation of the present input with previous input. The system does not actually provide Noise Reduction; it provides Signal Selection. In other words, its default is to pass nothing at all. It has to believe there is a signal present, and then it builds a filter, or set of filters, around the spectral components of the signal it thinks is there. Random noise has no correlation, voice has moderate but not perfect (unless you whistle a pure tone) and CW has excellent correlation. As a result, noise is heavily suppressed (no filter is built to pass it), voice is partially suppressed (hence it needs some additional gain to compensate for this effect so the same AF level will produce about the same audio level with a moderate S/N speech signal) and CW is hardly suppressed at all (hence it does not need any gain boost). NR is not recommended in Data Mode. Data is already getting a matched filter in the demodulator. You might lose a few symbols as the NR settles around the signal, and it might suppress a very weak signal that you could otherwise copy. NR in the end is intended for modes you listen to. /quote lastly I saved this gem of a post from Jack WA9FVP Re: [Elecraft] [K3]Noise Filter (NF) ADJ wa9fvp Thu, 27 Dec 2012 16:19:36 -0800 There's no documentation but as far as I can tell-- F1-x through F4-x defines the amount of noise reduction or how aggressive the filter attacks the I.F. noise. F5-X through F8-X defines the amount of reduction and the level that's mixed with the filtered and non-filtered I.F. Note that m which means mix will appear after F5-X and above. X defines the delay. Delay is the amount of time it takes for the filter to converge on a non-sinusoidal signal or the noise. The higher the number, the longer it takes for the noise to reduce to a low level. I hope this helps. my previous reply was the short answer, here is the long answer: reference: http://www.mail-archive.com/elecraft@mailman.qth.net/msg171471.html to quote Wayne from 7/10/2014 7:55 PM quote Hi all, Our firmware task lists are sorted by priority. Determination of Priority is democratic to some degree (Squeaky Wheel and other industry standard methodologies). But in practice it involves crystal-ball-gazing, head-counting, arm-wrestling-over-a-beer, and a healthy dose of what-we-have-time-for. It is not practical for us to publish the lists. They change daily and contain a lot of firmware-speak. We'd rather spend time actually making changes than on sanitizing lists for public consumption. This is also the reason that we can't make announcements of the form We will not ever get to feature X. (Imagine trying to do that with your personal Home Repair task list. Would your spouse let you unilaterally decide to remove some of them?) We'd rather be optimistic about it, since you never know when one of our overworked engineers is going to get some unexpected free time. The most useful guidance I can give you is this. If only one or two users are affected by a particular change, it is less likely to be implemented in the near future. If nearly all users are affected, it darn well better be fixed instantly. Everything else is in a sort of gray zone (see Determination of Priority, above). I take responsibility for any muttered oaths against Elecraft pertaining to implementation delays. If it's any comfort: I read all the mail and lose sleep over things we can't get to. All I can say is that we try to make the best decisions we can, given engineering time available. 73, Wayne N6KR /quote On 8/14/2014 4:55 PM, Sam Morgan wrote: I doesn't have anything to do with one of their new products, so there is no reason to waste electrons asking or commenting. Re: [Elecraft] K3 Notch causes distortion on SSB RX
hard to describe, it's like the audio is getting chopped up, not sure this would explain it, but it's kind of like the sound of someone gargling being overlayed over the signal audio. A combination of that and the sound of NR @ 5-1. if the band is very quiet and the signals strong it's very pronounced, if the band is noisy it's not as pronounced On 7/28/2014 7:52 PM, Dick Dickinson wrote: What type of distortion are you hearing? [Elecraft] K3 weak rx audio when AFX is NOT active?
I just added a different set of stereo amplified speakers to my K3 #4123. Yesterday all was ok, if I switched from AFX active to OFF, my volume levels remained the same, just the sound changed. Today I was listening with the AFX BIN active (my normal setting) and then I switched the AFX OFF, and my volume level dropped way down. If I listen through my headphones, the volume level stays the same. Have I killed my audio out? Re: [Elecraft] K3 weak rx audio when AFX is NOT active?
Problem solved! it seems a brand new 4' long 3.5 male to 3.5 male cable was the culprit, when I removed it from the mix, the problem went away. Some how Murphy managed to mess with the cable, and my feeble mind. It went from out of the box working one day, to weird failures the next day, all in only 8 hours, sigh. With the recent 'I blew up my audio chip' thread fresh in my mind, paranoia took over, and I feared the worse, due to the loud pop I hear when I turn on/off the new amplified M-Audio AV40 speakers, so figured I had killed something. It's still very weird that it would change/fail only with the AFX on/off setting? I will be purchasing/installing the K3AUDPROTMDKT in the near future! http://www.elecraft.com/order_form_parts.htm#K3%20Parts quote Even though the K3’s audio output I.C. has internal protection, a small number have failed under extreme conditions such as a dead short across the speaker output. This modification adds a 1-ohm resistance to each speaker output that tests show prevents failure even under these conditions. Some soldering of leaded parts is required to make this modification. Included with all new K3s shipped after mid May 2013. /quote $9.95 seems like a very cheap price to pay for the piece of mind that a bit more insurance against a potential Audio IC failure. [Elecraft] K3 P3 SVGA - ?future firmware updates for K3/P3/SVGA?
first let me say to Wayne, this is not a spur of the moment, 'should have waited over night to cool off' email. I have been biting my tongue/fingers over this for a very long time. After reading the recent [Elecraft] K3/P3/SVGA thread, I felt it is as good a time as any to ask a few questions of the folks at Elecraft. first a rhetorical question or two to set the tone, hi hi 1st Is there any guesstimate when/if Elecraft's firmware engineers will stop tweaking *ONLY* the new Elecraft hardware products? 2nd ...and be allowed to refocus on firmware promises made over the previous many months/year(s) for the K3/P3/SVGA what promises you may ask? ... check out the 'many' requests Wayne says he has on his 'to do' list. I haven't kept track of all of them, (I'm sure the ones I want may differ from others wishes) but Wayne often says he has a list of 'good ideas' that will be (or at least considered for) implementation in the future, maybe he will share with us what is actually on that list? My fear is that Elecraft may have reached critical mass, like many other excellent small companies, that were great when they started, only to grow and become so well known, that they were unable to keep up with the expansions of their products and their reputations started to suffer. Why do I say such blasphemous things about the company whose products and services I am truly in awe of? Because this dangerous downhill trend I'm speaking of, first becomes evident as shown by the companies inability/failure to keep promises made in their earlier years when they were building their reputations. will I switch companies, never! am I a kool aid drinker, always and forever! However, am I kinda tired of waiting for promises made, as I watch all the 'new stuff' getting all the attention, you betcha! Yes I understand new stuff will have bugs and will need special attention and the new owners of those products also deserve all the attention we K3/P3/SVGA owners used to enjoy. Do I bad mouth you products to others asking about buying Elecraft, no I still speak well of their performance. But I have noticed my enthusiasm when recommending your products has taken a notable shift. I use to have the highest of praise for *every aspect* of Elecraft, the Hardware, the Service and the Firmware. Lately I have dropped off mentioning how awesome your quick firmware updates are and have to catch myself to be sure not to go off on a rant about the problems we are having these days with shelved requests and delayed promises. all I'm saying is maybe it's time to reinvest some of that 'new product monies' that is taking so much of your current time and energies, back into the company and hire some more software engineers if the burden of support for your mature products is suffering as badly as it is now. That is if you want to turn around the declining trend we see now, and not be perceived as changing modes to 'riding on your former reputation' like many other past companies did, that cost them their reputations. The 'we'll get around to it' responce, is getting extremely old! my apologize for adding to your burden Wayne and the rest of the crew, but perhaps you need to hear how some of us among your loyal followers are feeling out here, if that's what it takes to get you to change back to the company you use to be. signed NOT A TROLL! -- GB 73 K5OAI Sam Morgan __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com
Re: [Elecraft] K3 P3 SVGA - ?future firmware updates for K3/P3/SVGA?
for clarification, perhaps I should point out that the only must supply(s) that was even intimated in my comments... were based on the fact that Wayne has *SAID* he/they planned to *attempt* to implement these further firmware enhancements for their already awesome hardware. If, as you say, that has been determined to be commercially unrealistic Then to that I would reply, if they can't, don't intend to, or have changed their minds about it's feasibility, great, no problem, so be it, just inform us, don't continue to string us along after command decisions to the contrary have been decided. However I do *NOT* think that is what Wayne and Eric have decided, nor do I think that is what they are doing. (imo) I have the idea, they have just bitten off more than they can chew, with the staff they now employ, so why not consider contracting out some of these promised or unfinished coding changes so they can catch up. -- GB 73 K5OAI Sam Morgan On 7/10/2014 5:29 PM, Guy Olinger K2AV wrote: Well, I would call that maybe harsh, and for sure commercially unrealistic. So, even though there was a lot of improvement needed from version zero of the K3, we are far on the other side of having the K3 quite good enough to sell as is. A K3 firmware change entirely for the K3 only has become pretty rare. Most are integration work for the entire K-Line. We have gotten as much as we have because we supplied the hard testing and allowed a gradual implementation. Wayne has followed a change regimen that provided an amazing collection of improvements. He certainly leveraged all that into the KX3 Myself, I can't honestly think that Wayne owes me anything at all. If he does throw out some stuff, that's really neat. But at this point anything else he does for the K3 is far beyond the call of duty. No other ham manufacturer is even in the same order of magnitude as Elecraft responsiveness. I can wish and make polite, respectful requests. But IMHO to insinuate that Wayne has some remaining unfulfilled duty to the K3 that he *must* supply is unrealistic at best. 73, Guy. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Elecraft's linux utilities - somewhat OT, or maybe not
I have mixed feelings about the recent trend to 'demand' Elecraft release their utility pgms for linux in 64 bit versions, in addition to the 32 bit versions they already release. Here are a couple of thoughts In most of my readings on different radio related forums as well as email groups, IMO the trend for computers used by the majority of hams in their shacks are the of the older 32 bit models. I say that based in part on the hue and cry about having to retire their XP machines and how stressed they are that they will have actually go out and to buy a newer (64bit) computer to use beside their $3k to $5k rigs. g Instead of adding to the Elecraft software guys load by asking them to build tailor made releases, when IMO their time might be better spent working on the coding for the many firmware upgrades we have requested for each of their growing list of products. Maybe some of the more knowledgeable *nix gurus on the list, could contribute a Distro specific howto write up for installation on their favorite operating systems (distros). Send it in and let Elecraft post the info on the pages in a paragraph right below the Linux utility links. === Something like K1JT has done for WSJT-X at the bottom of this page: http://www.physics.princeton.edu/pulsar/K1JT/wsjtx.html quote Linux: Thanks to AC6SL and KA6MAL, packages for v1.1.1 r3520 on Ubuntu 12.04, 12.10, 13.04, 13.10 are available at https://launchpad.net/~jnogatch/+archive/wsjtx Ubuntu Linux installation instructions: 1. For the purposes of these two bands my house is clean. So now I need to do a walk around the area to see if I can locate the sources. I tried a little DC to daylight receiver with little success even with a 1ft diameter 2 turn loop for an antenna. The signals in question are too narrow band and the receiver is too insensitive so the signals are buried in noise. I'm now trying to use the P3 in hopes that its signal processing and averaging and ability to see a broader spectrum might be easier to use than listening to a single frequency. I tried the loop antenna directly into the P3 while powered on a battery and it seems like I could use a bit of gain to get over the input noise of the P3. Have others tried this and if so what sort of preamp, antenna or other setup was used? Re: [Elecraft] CW on SSB
I believe you will find it under CW Weight in the manual here is the snipit from the manual CW WGHT 1.15 Adjusts element/space timing ratio (weight) for the internal keyer. Additional functions of this menu entry, via numeric keypad (Advanced): Tap 1 to select SSB -CW (default) or SSB +CW (allows CW in SSB modes). Tap 2 to select @ = STOP (‘@’ character terminates KY-packet transmission; default) or @ = ‘AC’ (‘@’ in a KY packet is sent as .--.-. [@] in CW mode). Tap 3 to select OLD or NEW QSK (default). NEW reduces AF keying artifacts. Tap 4 to select VOX NOR (default) or AUTO OFF. The AUTO OFF setting turns CW VOX off on power-up, avoiding accidental keying by attached PCs, etc. Tap 5 to select automatic VFO offset on SSB/CW mode change (VFO OFS) or no offset (VFO NOR, default). Automatic offset is often used on 6 meters, where mixed-mode QSOs are necessary during fading. Note: Pitch matching will be more accurate if USB is paired with CW REV, and LSB with CW normal. I always run with the K3's AGC off...ymmv sm On 4/21/2014 7:39 PM, Don Wilhelm wrote: The situation on HF is different. If there is a station within the passband at S-9+30, it is on the borderline for activating the Hardware AGC. That signal should be moved outside the roofing filter passband to reduce its response in the K3 first IF (and DAC input). Signals with strength less that S-9+30 can be easily handled by the DSP in the K3 and likely also by the K3 DSP of the JT65HF algorithms without overload. The situation being addressed is the case where there is a strong undesired signal that will activate the hardware AGC and cause 'pumping' in the receiver response. That is where the roofing filters come into play (and consideration for their phase shift). The narrow filters will have greater group delay and greater phase shift - that is just a 'fact of life'. If there are no S-9+30 signals in the receiver passband, the combination of the K3 DSP and application DSP can handle it quite nicely. In other words, for best JT65HF, keep your filters wide so the JT65 software can do its job. If you find an extremely strong signal inside the K3 IF passband, narrowing the filter width may help, it all depends on the filters you have installed and the frequency difference between the offending strong signal and your desired station. Bottom line - when operating JTx modes (or other digital modes) learn to recognize those conditions where the K3 Hardware AGC is being activated. If Hardware AGC is not an issue, the DSP in either the K3 or the JTx software/firmware should be able to handle it. -- GB 73 K5OAI Sam Morgan __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

[Elecraft] Anti Static Mats
Due to the recent subject of Anti Static mats, I did a little googling and thought I'd share my findings. First for reference Alan Bloom had this to say back in Feb 27, 2008 http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/Radio-Shack-ESD-mat-doesn-t-meet-spec-td462383.html quote Here are the results: Radio Shack P/N 276-2370 ($22.99) - 26 G ohms (26,000 M ohms) Jameco P/N 10584 ($16.45) - 44 G ohms (44,000 M ohms) Digi-Key P/N 16-1121-ND, (Desco 66164) ($38.18) - 41 M ohms The Desco mat's resistance is about 1000x lower than the cheaper ones! This mat is quite large, (2 x 3 feet, 61 x 91.4 cm) so if you buy one you may need to cut it down to fit on your workbench. It comes with a common point ground kit (that you have to install on the mat yourself) that provides a long wire with solder lug to connect to ground and a two-socket connector for connecting one or two wrist straps. Re: [Elecraft] KX3 / NaP3 Question
Hi Jim, I'm running NaP3 v2.8.8 on Win7 Pro 64bit with my K3, so this may not be applicable, but it could be worth a try. In the NaP3 help file under the Menu/DSP contents where it tells you how to do the calibrate that you have previously done. It also tells you how after you have done your calibration you can then set the WBIR to *Manual*. Try that, I believe it will force NaP3 to maintain the preset *Manual* levels even after the changes during transmit. hope it works for you -- GB 73 K5OAI Sam Morgan On 3/20/2014 12:30 PM, Jim Bennett wrote: I'm running NAp3 v2.2.4.2 on Windows 8.1, connected to the RX I/Q port on my KX3 at one end and to the Line In jack on an iMac on the other end. As some other folks have seen, there is an initial issue with images or duplicated signals when NaP3 starts up. Ken (W0CZ) tipped me to a way to get rid of the image issue by opening the NaP3 Config panel, going to the DSP tab, and then doing a Calibrate. This works quite well and just about completely eliminates those images. However When I key the KX3, I see my own signal (quite strong) on the NaP3 display and this completely throws out the calibration, bringing back the images, big time. I have tried several things to eliminate this: First, I tried using a PTT switch with the KX3 instead of QSK - I still see my signal on the pan display. Then, I pressed XMIT on the KX3 prior to keying it - no change, still see my signal. Next, I built an audio isolator to put in the line between the KX3 and the Line In jack on the iMac. No change. Finally, I wound the cable through a 2.4 mix 31 ferrite core nine times, thinking that maybe RF was somehow getting things hosed. That didn't help. So, my questions are: why am I seeing my signal from the KX3 RX I/Q when I transmit? Shouldn't that line be cut off completely when the KX3 goes into transmit? If not, can this be changed so it does? :-) Jim / W6JHB -- GB 73 K5OAI Sam Morgan __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html Message delivered to arch...@mail-archive.com

try here: http://www.elecraft.com/K2_Manual_Download_Page.htm#K1 look for: K1 Manual (.pdf)(5.1MB) K1 Owner's Manual, Rev I, April 15, 2011 then look on page 48 of the pdf (page 47 in the manual) where it says: quote Transmit Offset Adjustment Locate the offset test switch (S2) on the bottom of the RF board. Place it in the TEST position. You should hear a tone in the headphones; its pitch is equal to the transmit offset. If you don’t hear a tone, try rotating C13 (back left corner, near the key jack). Using the menu, locate S T P (sidetone pitch), and go into edit mode to turn on the sidetone. You should now hear two tones: the sidetone and the transmit offset tone. If the sidetone is very weak or very strong compared to the transmit offset tone, use the S T L menu entry to adjust the sidetone volume. Note: The receiver is muted in S T L edit mode, so you'll have to return to S T P after making any change to the sidetone setting. Adjust C13 so that the transmit offset pitch is as close as possible to your selected sidetone pitch. The two will seem to merge when the pitches are matched. Exit the menu, and set S2 back to the OPER position. If necessary, use the C A L menu entry to calibrate the operating frequency on transmit (see page 41). /quote On 3/18/2014 12:53 PM, ke...@arrl.net wrote: Does anyone have a PDF of this older manual, in particular the section on setting the transmitter offset? F5-X through F8-X defines the amount of reduction and the level that's mixed with the filtered and non-filtered I.F. Note that m which means mix will appear after F5-X and above. X defines the delay. Delay is the amount of time it takes for the filter to converge on a non-sinusoidal signal or the noise. The higher the number, the longer it takes for the noise to reduce to a low level. Re: [Elecraft] KAT-500 behavior under firmware 1.58
I have had just the opposite results with v 1.58 My amp is an AL-811, I run it at about 300-400w on 160m My 160m antenna is a 7' tall HiQ screwdriver antenna (also with a top hat) @ 20' with 16 radials each 13' long on my apartment roof. With no tuner my SWR on 160m ranges from 2.0:1 to 4.5:1 With v1.54 I was unable to run the KAT500 in Auto it would tune just fine and then while talking it would randomly fold back and start a search for an elusive low swr point With v1.58 I am able to find a stable resonant point yes at first there was a major 'clackity-clack' search, which resulted in a point 'close' to resonant. But if I immediately taped the [TUNE] button again, there is a much quieter, shorter search, that resulted in a stable tuning point in AUTO. I can then enjoy my 2 hr morning ragchew with out any retuning. The next morning when I tune up there may be a brief quiet retune, but that is caused by the different overnight moisture changes on the roof. Once that initial retune takes place it's once again stable. ymmv On 2/22/2014 8:10 AM, DeYoung James wrote: Greetings, Here is a little feedback on the new KAT-500 firmware. I installed version 1.58 last night and was using my 160m capacitance hat vertical antenna and observed what I think is strange behavior. First, I admit my 160m cap. hat vertical is not an optimal antenna. Previous versions of the firmware however, produced acceptable matches. Version 1.54 was a little better by introducing the finer step search. The version 1.58 firmware however produces worse results in my case. The tuning passes, the clickity-clack search, is clearly different on 160m. The KAT-500 now finds no good match in auto mode. I place the KAT-500 in manual mode and using the utility software set previously used capacitance and inductance values. Now the KAT-500 goes sometimes into bypass mode (I have no KPA-500), drops setting values with an audible click, and some times when I checked the utility it has gone far away in capacitance and inductance values without a clickty-clack tuning cycle. My K3 used to be able to produce nearly full power with its super ALC method of power control. According to my Palstar PM2000A power meter, not so much anymore, as it behaves now like traditional power fold back on 160m. It appears something is interacting. I have no evidence of RF in the shack. For example, in passband tuning (APF not enabled), the VFO B display says FC and then a number like 0.70 or whatever. What does FC mean (I can guess, but that would not be useful) and what is this number. I scanned all the documents I have and have not found descriptions of the content of the VFO B readout during passband tuning. I know it has something to do with shifting the frequency of center (I think) so maybe FC means Frequency Center. Also, there is an asterisk in the field, like: FC *0.68. Maybe someone can interpret the meaning of that. If I knew the definition for passband tuning for the VFO B field content I could probably guess at the meaning of the APF enabled display which is similar such as: APF *0.68. I have found lots of description of passband tuning and that part of the display showing the passband width and position but nothing describing the VFO B contents (not covered in documentation on alternate VFO B displays either). 73, phil, K7PEH -- GB 73 K5OAI Sam Morgan __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

For example you may want to create macros to shift the K3 into a particular mode on a specific frequency or band by a simple one or two key entry on the keyboard. You can create and enter up to 50 macros of up to 124 characters each. They are stored in non-volatile memory so they will not be lost when power is cycled. These memory locations are independent of the message memories. You can store 50 messages and 50 macros at the same time. Entering Macros Press Ctrl-Alt-M to open the macro entry window. The process of entering the various windows, assigning a key used to recall the macro and editing macros is identical to that used for text messages. See Text Message Entry, above. Note that to enter the text message entry window you pressed Ctrl-Alt-T but you must press Ctrl-Alt-M to enter the macro entry window. Sample Macro: Assign a macro memory to the F1 key (see Figure 5) and enter and save the following macro (see Figure 6): FA0001497;MD6;FA0001407;DT3 Now pressing F1 on the keyboard will send the above macro to the K3 setting VFO A to 14.070 and the mode to DATA, PSK31. NOTE: When creating a macro, pressing ^F will place the K3’s current frequency (including RIT) into the macro in the form of an FA command. For example, if VFO A is set to 7.123 and ^F is pressed while entering the macro, FA7123000; will be inserted into the macro string. I seem to remember it is not recommended to attempt to use a usb hub in the P3's SVGA USB port, can't find it now that I am looking for it. :-/ my question: would this hub with on/off power switches for each usb port work? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=0J2-000N-9 it says: Built-in Power On/Off switches and LED power On/Off indicators for each port for better performance and power management. sure would save wear and tare on the P3's usb port when plugging in and out a memory stick and then back to the keyboard. tia -- GB 73 K5OAI Sam Morgan __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K3-DXLabs-LP-Bridge AI command question
yes, during my trouble shooting when I was having the crashes, I had closed other programs down to where I was running only LP-Bridge and DXLabs. I'll keep in mind the 'virtual pair' idea if I start having more crashes. As of now, so far, all is well with no crashes just having all 3 set to use AI2. On 12/29/2013 9:02 AM, Larry Phipps wrote: You have a number of apps connected, and you may find that each one prefers a specific setting of the AI box for its port. Do you have the problem with just LP-Bridge and DXLabs running? I also responded in one of my posts that you can rearrange things so that DXLabs connects directly to the rig, and set up Secondary CAT in DXLabs to communicate with LP-Bridge via a virtual pair (like VSPE, com-ocom, VSP Manager, etc.). Then the rest of the apps connect to LP-Bridge. Larry N8LP On 12/29/2013 1:16 AM, Sam Morgan wrote: Well since I tried to cover all my bases and ask this on 3 different reflectors, in the hopes I might get an answer I could use, I'll sum up the results and post them now. First, thanks to all who responded to my questions. Second I'm not trying to bash LP-Bridge, only find a fix for my problem, and I hoped the new info about AI from Dick might help solve it. Dave AA6YQ says: When Commander starts controlling a K3, it sends an AI2; command unless you have Continuous interrogation disabled, in which case it sends an AI0; command. Larry N8LP says: The AI boxes in LP-Bridge have nothing to do with the AI mode of the K3. These are used to simulate AI modes for apps connected to each virtual port. LP-Bridge forces the K3 into AI2 mode all the time. With many apps trying to control the rig, it would be a mess to let each one try to change the AI setting in the rig, therefore all AI commands are intercepted once LP-Bridge puts the rig in AI2 mode. and from Dick K6KR, I learned how I could put the K3 into AI2 myself, independent of either DXLabs or LP-Bridge, by using the K3 Utility pgm. Over the last two years I have been using 2 different boxes, during which I was encountering random LP-Bridge crashes on both. I say random because there was nothing that would cause the crash. I could leave the pgms running and not touch anything yet after while LP-Bridge would crash with a Runtime error. One box was an AMD 2.9 Ghz, 4gig ram, with both Win7 Pro 32-bit and 64-bit. The other box is an AMD 4.0 Ghz, 32gig ram with Win7 Pro 64-bit. Both machines have real serial ports, not usb to serial, and the serial cards were different on the 2 boxes. I always set the polling rate for LP-Bridge to 200ms NaP3 DXLabs for 300ms as was suggested by Larry here: http://www.telepostinc.com/NaP3.html#Setup quote Rig Timing (ms)... Polling Interval: Defaults to 300ms. If using LP-Bridge or LPB2, be careful when setting this lower than 300, and never set it lower than the setting in LP-Bridge or LPB2. In general, this should be set about 100ms slower than the LP-Bridge / LPB2 setting. /quote Over the last 2 years I've made a several runs at solving this. I have ask on the LP-PAN list a number of times about my crash problem. Each time it seemed I was the only one having the problem, so I would wait a while and ask again later in the hopes that someone new to the list might also have the problem and maybe even the solution. But if others can't duplicate the problem, of course they can't help fix it. :-( So I have just tolerated it or just not run LP-Bridge if it got to bad. Some days I could run LP-Bridge all day, but then if it crashed once, it would continually crash the rest of the day, even after reboots. All the above is just to give details, not to bad mouth LP-Bridge! I love it, it's a valuable tool, that is why I keep trying to use it, but it's hell trying to use it, if it won't stay running. It's a bit to soon to tell, but I have had some success over the last week, even before Dick's info about the K3's AI setting, just by chance I had tried setting the DXLabs virtual port in LP-Bridge to AI2, at least it would run longer before it crashed. So to sum this up, now I have the K3 set to AI2 Larry says LP-Bridge defaults to AI2 when it talks to the K3 Dave says DXLabs Commander uses AI2 for continuous interrogation. LP-Bridge is currently handling 4 different programs at the same time. DXLabs Commander, N3FJP, VE7CC, NaP3 It's been 6hrs with no crash, maybe everyone is on the same page now. The PC must poll for all radio information using GET commands; the K3 will not send any information automatically. AI1, Auto-Info Mode 1: The K3 sends an IF (info) response within 1 second when any frequency or moderelated event occurs, either manually (at the radio itself) or when the PC sends commands. These events include: band change, mode change, VFO movement, RIT/XIT offset change or clear, and several additional switches (e.g., A/B, REV, A=B, SPLIT, CW REV, RIT, XIT). IF responses are suppressed during VFO movement. Notes: (1) putting the K3 into auto-info mode 1 (by sending AI1;) causes an initial IF response. [Elecraft] P3 screen snapshot problems
My P3 and it's ability to take screen snapshots have been working fine for 2-3 years. I installed the SVGA board earlier this year and it also does screen captures just fine. The problem is now when I try to take a screen snapshot using the P3 utility (version 1.13.1.23) I am getting jagged images. You can go here to see an image of what I mean: https://picasaweb.google.com/k5oai.sam/P3 An SVGA snapshots saved to a USB stick are just fine, with no jagged screen segments. I have reset the P3, I have rebooted the computer, I have checked the connections to be sure they are tight. Connections are Serial, not USB to Serial. Before I go digging around for a new serial cable or tearing down everything trying to trouble shoot this. I wonder if anyone else has run into this problem and might have a clue where I need to look for the problem? I haven't done anything, that I can think of, that might have caused this change. I know I had some good screen shots taken from before, in the last month at least. Re: [Elecraft] APF
one more fyi on the [XFIL/DUALPB] button when in RTTY, both AFSK A and FSK D, it's a Dual Passband Filter when in CW mode it acts like the single peak APF there's an image of the APF in use on N1EU site: http://n1eu.com/K3/K3_apf.htm On 11/30/2013 11:56 AM, Sam Morgan wrote: I'll copy and paste from my notes, hope it helps clear it up for you. sm APF on the K3 The APF is an easy tool to use. However, one of the main concerns people are talking about now is the fact that the filter seems to be a bit tight, and tends to ring. This, of course, is normal for an APF (IIR type filter), but not everyone wants to hear ringing on their CW signal when they use it. Others just can’t copy the CW signal when the ringing is at the same exact frequency as their CW tone. For this reason I have written this little tutorial on how to remove the ringing from your APF filter while still getting the most out of it. Let’s start by centering your SHIFT (before you turn on the APF) and make sure you see the * next to your PITCH/center IF frequency. Next, spot the CW signal in. i.e., hit the SPOT button when you’re trying to copy someone, or use the VFO to center the line on the CWT display. Now you can be sure that the CW station is in the center of your IF passband. Next, adjust the width setting to your liking. It almost doesn’t matter once the APF is on what you choose. However, what it will help with is blocking noise from the sides of the signal you’re listening to. This can be helpful if you have other stations that are very close to the CW signal you’re trying to peak. The lower you set your Width filter the more you will reject to the sides. Any signals (including noise) that are left over on the sides will be compounded into the center of your IF passband and cause more ringing noise. So I would suggest that you keep your WIDTH from 250 Hz to 100 Hz setting. You can play more with the WIDTH control once you have the APF on. Turn on the RIT control (tap the RIT button). Next, lower the RIT frequency -20 Hz. (You must have CONFIG:PB CTRL in the config menu set to .01 to move in 10 Hz steps). If your pitch is set to 500 Hz, then the tone of the CW should now be 480 Hz. Next, turn on the APF by HOLDING the DUAL PB button. Adjust the APF using the SHIFT Fc Knob (now APF control). Move the APF down -20 Hz to match the CW signal. Once you have the signal in the center of the new 480 Hz tone you should hear that the CW signal pops up about 5 or 6 dB. What you should also notice is that CW tone is now centered at a different frequency than your IF passband center. This also allows you to avoid peaking the ringing sounds that live in the center of your selected IF area. Your brain is now free to discriminate the two different tones instead of having to copy code at the same frequency as all the ringing noise. If and When the K3 has a variable Q adjustment you will then be able to avoid the ringing by opening up the tightness of the PEAK Filter and allowing a little more signal to pass. Of course you also compromise the “sharpness” of the current APF operation, but if you feel that you don’t need as much peaking on the signal then you will be able to control it a little more accurately. Having a Variable Q control would be best used on a signal that is ‘less’ weak than those hard to copy signals in the noise floor. Another great feature of the APF is being able to use it on either/or filter position I or II. If you like, you can set filter I for APF off, and filter II to APF on. Switching between the two filters is as easy as HOLDING the SHIFT knob in. Once you set either filter position with the APF on or off the K3 will remember how you have it set. Dusty K3WC Jun 26, 2012; 1:19pm K3/KX3 Operating Tip: APF (audio peaking filter) for weak-signal CW work Both the K3 and KX3 have an APF control (audio peaking filter). APF can be extremely effective when you're trying to copy weak CW signals buried in noise. Most DSP filters have very steep skirts; they're often referred to as brick-wall filters for this reason. This is the type of filtering associated with the WIDTH control (K3) or PBT control (KX3). In contrast, the APF is a filter with a very narrow peak (about 30 Hz at the -3 dB points) and very broad skirts. The narrow peak brings up the signal amplitude slightly, while the broad skirts prevent noise from being amplified and delayed in such a way as to dominate the signal. The APF function used in the K3 and KX3 is a modern DSP reinterpretation of the hardware APF circuit found on some legacy transceivers, which was very effective. On the KX3, the APF switch is labeled APF (tap), while on the K3, it's labeled DUAL PB (hold). The K3 actually provides two different special filter functions; use the DUAL PB menu entry to set up the switch for APF. When you turn on APF, the DSP graphic changes to remind you of the nature of APF, with its narrow peak and broad skirts. I
