Re: [Elecraft] who does the work in QRP?
The same skills you use when running QRP also work when running QRO...listening to where the DX station is listening and transmitting WHEN he is listening is the best way to work him. You compare brute force QRO to carfefully timed QRP and then say QRP is better. You can use the same careful timing and listening when running QRO. So when you are operating with the same skill level in transmit the only difference is how well the OTHER guy can copy you...how patient he is. Many stations won't want to slow down their QSO rate in a contest to even try more than once to get your call and will just go back to CQ'ing. The fact is QRP IS fun. It IS challenging. But I put the same effort in my operating regardless of my power. Its the OTHER guy who is listening to me through S9 static crashes and having his patience tested. I don't work any harder (unless you count repeating my callsign more times than usual.). The power knob on my K2 is a time machine. At 1W it takes me longer to work someone in a contest or a DX pileup than when I have it turned up to 1500W. My skills don't change. I like to think I'm a good operator. By that I mean I'm courteous to othersWhen the DX calls for the W2 I don't send K2TA. When I hear the DX working a station every 10 seconds I darn well know it's a waste of time to send my call for longer than that time. But I don't kid myself into thinking that because I work a new country while running 5W that it is because of my great skills. I give 95% of the credit to the guy on the other end. But that's just my perspective. I'm sure there are people who pat themselves on the back for working a DX station with QRP by sending their callsign 50 times in a row without ever pausing to listen for the DX so that sooner or later when the pileup died down he was the last man standing in the clear. I just hope he stays QRP so I don't have to be QRM'd by him in the pileups. - Original Message - From: KT5X [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, December 26, 2006 2:31 PM Subject: [Elecraft] who does the work in QRP? QRP...the real skills are at the other end. boy...am I asking for trouble with THAT line! LOL. Yes and no... Here's the thing In a ragchew or traffic handling, that may be true when the QRP signal is weak. But this is NOT the case in DX'ing, as in, get your call across to work a DX-pedition or the like. Yes, the guy on the other end has to copy a relatively weaker signal, but all the skill of slipping your weak signal through the cracks of a pile-up, or through the rise and fall of ionospheric waves rests with the QRP operator, make no mistake. When I am DXing QRP, I listen, listen, listen, listen, and rarely transmit. When I actually transmit, my success level, QSO's per call, is far higher than when QRO when my tendency is throw my signal at it 'cause I know it is getting there. QRP on 160 meters (from New Mexico): It took me 20 minutes to work R1FJT, Franz Josephland, QRO. It took another forty-five, but just ONE call, to work him QRP, five watts, with our club call. What a great night. I was watching him on the grayline chart. He was in his grayline and stayed there for 90 minutes that night. that's the thrill and skill of QRP. 72, Fred KT5X (W5YA/qrp) ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I thought new FCC rules are going to relax limitations on amplifier gain. I'll probably get thrown off of the Elecraft list for what I am about to say...8-) Don't get me wrong...I love QRPmost of my contest participation is at 5W. I can work the world with 5W. And on 10M during a solar peak I can break pileups with 5W. But my experience is that 100W with a dipole on 160M *IS* QRP...that the chances of grabbing a VU7 in a 40M pileup from the U.S. running 5W are pretty low and anyone looking to run emergency traffic with 5W only has to try checking into the Elecraft CW net to have a sense of what to expect when your antennas are down and the water is flowing past your bedroom window. Turn it up to 400W and maybe get heard...and fry some fish as they float by! QRP...the real skills are at the other end. boy...am I asking for trouble with THAT line! [Elecraft] Non-standard XV-50 installation...
Question for Wayne/Eric and anyone else familiar with the XV-50. As some of you know, my KAT-100 tuner is built flush against the bottom of my K2/100 as a solid brick with no external interface wire or power leads. This was possible due to the brilliantly conceived 2D fasteners as well as Elecraft having silk-screened and plated holes for a header assembly allowing a ribbon cable to be connected directly to the main board of the KAT-100 and back up to the KPA-100 and onto the K2 CPU board. Some questions: 1) Is there a provision on the XV-50 for a dual pin header connector to allow the control signals from the K2/KPA-100/KAT-100 into the XV-50 as there is in the KAT-100? 2) I don't have the 60M/transverter option in my K2. I was thinking about running the old RF output of the K2 internally down through the KAT-100 and into the XV-50 while leaving it in parallel with the input of the KPA-100. I don't THINK this would hurt operation on HF nor VHF. 3) Optionally, I might consider using the ANT-2 output of the KPA-100 as the input for the XV-50 and the ANT-1 output for HF. The danger in that is the possibility of pumping 100W of 14MHz of RF into the XV-50.wot's dat I smell? 4) I am considering taking the RX output of the XV-50 and running it into the optional RX antenna input of the 160M option and selecting EXT RX ANT when using the transverter. Good..bad..problems? The end result would be a nearly perfect cube of a radio covering 160-6M with no external cabling. Any suggestions/opinions would be appreciated. - Tom K2TA ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Re: [Elecraft] 10M birdie and other assundries
Hi Jules! I have a temporary workaround that I use...albeit a pain in the butt one. That birdy seems related to an oscillator in the KPA-100 (HV PS?)..although Don can be probably be more specific. I've found that by turning the power level down that the birdy shifts a bit in frequency...maybe a few kHz. Enough to make a difference between hearing a station and not. If a new country is sitting on 29.020 I'll twiddle the power level between transmissions...otherwise I avoid that frequncy during normal operation. 73 de Tom K2TA - Original Message - From: J F [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, December 19, 2006 8:21 AM Subject: [Elecraft] 10M birdie and other assundries Just out of curiousity, after spending some time on 10M during ARRL 10, I noticed a birdie around 28.019/20. Is there a way to eliminate this or move it below 28.000? As to my high current draw on 160, the KPA100 works fine into a dummy load and straight into the antenna. It does seem to draw more with the KAT100 in the circuit. I can't imagine much in the tuner that would cause such a problem (although I could be wrong). My thoughts drift towards a ground loop issue and/or rf getting back into the rig's control circuit. Guess I will be adding some further current chokes in the shack... [Elecraft] Old post about contests from 2004
I just stumbled across an old posting on the Elecraft list from two years ago where Jules-N2WN mentioned submitting entries into contests as a group of K2 users or Elecraft Rig Users. Tom LA1PHA also expressed an interest. Some contests require that the club be one where the members reside within a certain geographical radius and perhaps require of physical meetings etc. But other contests seem to allow you form the club for a specific contest. So for the ones that don't require us to travel to Finland or TN or NY for a meeting perhaps we can submit our scores together. But in order to do so we need to come up with a club name. Suggestions are solicited and anyone else interested in pooling your contest scores with a K2 or Elecraft-based contest group are welcome to chime in. Re: [Elecraft] Barebone K2 Amplifier?
As hinted to in Don's comments there is another reason for going with the KPA-100. I love the fact that the KPA-100 has an integrated solid state T/R switch so you can run full QSK. Most of the imported amps are relay driven via the PTT line or RF sensing with a time delay and are not able to be keyed at normal keying speeds. Of course you could always buy an old BW or Johnson tube T/R switch but now your running 3 boxes with cables etc. The KPA-100 is the neatest solution. - Tom K2TA K2 #1117 - Original Message - From: Don Wilhelm [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Fred (FL) [EMAIL PROTECTED]; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, December 07, 2006 8:37 PM Subject: RE: [Elecraft] Barebone K2 Amplifier? Add an EC2 enclosure and you can have the KPA100 external and still with all the function of the inboard unit - your basic K2 will still be ready to 'grab and go' as a QRP transceiver. Pricewise - yes, it may seem like a lot in one 'ball of wax', but if you price the components to build any external amplifier and include the enclosure and other hardware, I believe the KPA100 price will be on a par with others. Re: [Elecraft] One-Way Propagation?
Consistantly over the past 40 years I reaffirm on a daily basis that, at least on 40M, as the sun lowers in the west I can hear European stations about 45 minutes to an hour before they can hear me. I have no explanation for it but suspect that the signal level is the same on both ends but the background noise from the daylight side masks the signal as it appears in Europe. Howdy Jeff, If you get on 20 meters in the morning, while you are in the early morning hours and the operator with whom you are working is in an area later in the day, you will find some odd occurrences. Some days you hear better than the other op and some days it is the reverse. The ionosphere is not a perfectly spherical reflector. From empirical evidence I have found it to be quite oddly shaped indeed. Think of the layer you're bouncing your signals off as a boiling layer where the surface changes direction rapidly. This describes rapid QSB. Other times you'll hear very slow, but deep, QSB. At that point the reflecting layer is starting to calm down a bit but there are still bumps in it. Under perfect conditions the received and transmitted signal meet a perfectly smooth reflective sheet which allows the two of you to communicate quite equally. As far as being truly one way? Occasionally I hear ops extremely well but they cannot hear me. I hope it is not that they are ignoring me but simply cannot hear me. This is what I call one-way propagation. Please accept this as a non-scientific, entirely empirical experiment of my own accord on propagation characteristics. Kevin. Re: [Elecraft] Straight Key on my K2
Hi Carter - Instead of setting the K2 for Hand Key I chose to take advantage of the auto-sense mode. I connected a diode in series with the tip and a diode in series with the ring across the paddle mini-plug and out to my sparkless Navy straight key. So can send with the paddle and the straight key just by moving my hand from device to the other. This takes advantage of the K2's logic that says if the ring and tip are grounded at the EXACT same time send like a straight key otherwise act like a keyer. Re: [Elecraft] QRP Power Level?
Wow...I sure wasn't trying to imply that! 8-) My post said where PARTICIPANTS define QRP as 5W CW and 10W SSB. Specifically there was a website of a group who were planning SS activity that stated that they were going to be running 5W on CW and 10W PEP on SSB during SS.You didn't get a chance to see that since I sent it to the guys off-list. There are those who look at 5W DC and immediately translate it to 10W PEP for SSB even if the official rules state 5W maximum power. There seem to be many standards set by various organizations. The only one that matters is the sponsor of the contest. One safe rule of thumb... If you never exceed 5W regardless of mode ALL contest sponsors will acknowledge you as a QRP entry in their contests. 73 de Tom K2TA - Original Message - From: Jack Brindle [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Tom Althoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Friday, July 07, 2006 1:54 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] QRP Power Level? Re: [Elecraft] Field Day at Home
Nice setup Glen! It's great to see so many Elecraft radios made it on the air for Field Day. My hometown group gave up participating in FD this year so I decided that I was going to take my Honda generator, put up a tent and put up a temporary antenna on my own property to try to capture the spirit and intent of the operation alone. It is definitely worth doing. I am now comfortable going camping with my wife with the knowledge of how to assemble a three room Coleman tent that I gained over the weekend! I wonder if we send photos of ourselves operating our Elecrafts to Elecraft perhaps they could find the time to update their photos web page to include pics of Elecrafts rigs operating Field Day 2006? My K2-TA-100 ran flawlessly throughout the weekend with 238 QSO's made on CW, 9 on PKS31 and 49 on SSB. The antenna was a 40M inverted V set up just for FD using one of those bright orange kite telescoping masts. That was the easiest antenna I have ever put up. I used tie-wraps to hold the coax against the tubing to distribute its weight and to prevent collapse of the sections should they decide to slip down at any time. I then tied the ends of the inverted vee with fishing line to the surrounding tree branches. One end of the V passed by my tent only 10 ft away from the radio. Hours before FD started I made some changes to my KPA-100. Not once did I have any problem with the radio resetting or breaking into oscillation on 40M which was my mainstay for the contest with over 200 QSO's taking place on that band alone. My K2/100/AT-100 integrated system is now 100% functional and a pleasure to use. Not sure who to contact at Elecraft but it sure would be nice to see everyone's pics from FD. Feel free to e-mail yours to me off the list...I'd love to see everyone's setup. Sitting in Glen's chair sure must have been a lot more comfortable than my operating position in a humid tent in the rain. So I worked about 220 contacts on 20, 40, and 80 meters using only CW with a solely search and pounce technique. I did get a couple hours of 40 contacts or more but I did take a number of hours off to do chores and to write some assembly language. It is my way of relaxing :) I ran the entire time on emergency power (1E) but ran from two rigs, two sets of paddles, and five separate antennas from three locations. The power jumped all over the place from 3 watts to 100 watts. Since I am not submitting any log this does not matter. I just have fun handing out points to others and seeing who I can hear. It is fun to test my CW skills against the fast and slow ops. There were a wide variety of fists as well ;) My goal was to beat what I did last year. I did that. I also wanted to work with a group of folks to get the full effect of the field day crowd. I did not get to do that. So a resolution for next year will be to start very early to find a group who will not bail out at the last minute. I also need to find a group who wants a CW operator. I was not successful with finding one in Oregon. Around here you have to be careful if you mention the mode. Too many folks are adamantly opposed to its use or even its existence. I had no idea of the depth of feeling until I mentioned how much fun I had running CW. I was never again welcome at that club! Re: [Elecraft] RIT/XIT
While I currently never use RIT/XIT and rely on the A/B split feature I think I am going to try to learn to incorporate their use in my daily operation. Their advantage for most 5kHz splits would be to allow me to leave VFO-A set for CW mode and CW freqs and VFO-B for SSB mode in the phone band and still be able to work most splits. Of course, 40-SSB still requires the wider range of the A/B split. I'd love to hear more about W4TD's external VFO. I wonder if he has a website with info on what he did? -- Tom K2TA - Original Message - From: J F [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Elecraft Discussion List elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Tuesday, May 30, 2006 2:18 PM Subject: [Elecraft] RIT/XIT There are several buttons on my K2 that are rarely (if ever) used - for instance, I never use RIT and XIT since split operation is available. I agree. I've never understood what problem XIT is intended to solve. Both RIT/XIT are completely unnecessary in a rig with split and I detest using that tiny knob in lieu of the Main VFO knob. Hi Bill Don, I like this feature and use it quite frequently. It comes in very handy in contests, particularly when folks call off your frequency. N1MM toggles RIT/XIT from the bandmap screen. I set mine RIT a bit off frequency and I can flip/flop back and forth to see if someone is calling a bit out of my window. It's also faster for hitting DX who are listening higher or lower than their simplex frequency. I generally only use the second VFO for the monster pileups where you can be 5 to 10 kHz away from the Tx station's frequency. Of course, I went without VFO B and used RIT/XIT more frequently in the past. I may be more comfortable with it. One of the guys at work, W4TD, built an outboard VFO for his K2. It's quite nice. Two features that I really like are a display of the VFO B frequency and a split LED. They both would keep idiots like me from making a mistake and Txing on the wrong frequency, because I thought I was/wasn't split and I'd know where I was Txing as well. I don't know how many devices you can hang on the serial port, before you start bogging the K2 and/or computer down. The outboard VFO sure is cute, but will have four devices daisy chained off the K2 port. Re: [Elecraft] New Elecraft Products
As long as we are dreaming...I wish the KPA800 photo had a K2 or some other way of determining the size/dimentions. If the KPA800/1500 is not much larger than a Ten-Tec Orion then I would love to see a K3 that matched the amp in size. Make it modular and expandable. Have slots on the motherboard for 2nd rcvr, 6M/2M/220/440 transverter modules etc. Include FM, SSTV etc as an Optional Mode Module. Perhaps include decoding of SSTV and text from other digital modes for display on an optional flat panel display. Make the PA upgradable with choice of 20W or 200W output. Make it a 12V for mobile/battery operation but include a built-in quiet switching supply. Maybe have the 20W be 12VDC and the 200W have a built-in 50V switching supply for running on 120VAC. Just thinking out loud here. And make some provision for split operation indicators such as putting the sidetone into only one side of a stereo headphone so that operators can HEAR the difference between when they are transmitting split and when they are not. A visual indication such as having all the frequency readouts turn red in transmit during split operation and some other color when operating simplex. An operator would KNOW from the first dit if he was intending to work a DXpedition split and started to call simplex on the DX stations frequency. (Maybe a mild shock to the keyer paddle is needed?) A low end version would be a 20W 160-10M CW only rig (although I suspect SSB would not add that much cost). A high end version would run 200W with an internal AC supply and cover 160-microwave all modes including general coverage on 2 receivers and auto-tuning on all bands below 144Mhz. I think a K3 like that would be at least as expensive as adding up the price of a 100W K2 with all accessories, options and converters and doubling or tripling the total price. Of the big projects being discussed, the K3 is the only one that captures my interest and enthusiasm. I love my K2 - best rig I've ever had - but it sits in my shack on its small footprint as I twiddle the small knobs and drill down thru menus (if I can remember how) to operate it. My ideal K3 would NOT need to be contest grade with 2 receivers, etc. But I would like a larger self contained unit with less menus and more knobs and a larger (color??) display. 12 V power, 100 W out, built in tuner, CW SSB, IF DSP, spectrum display, and if possible 6 and 2 w/o external adapters. Tall order I know, but what fun it would be to build and operate!! 73 ... Craig AC0DS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Add me to the list of people experiencing the K2/KPA-100/KAT-100 40M high power reset problem. Since my KAT-100 is built into the base of my K2/100 I do not have the option of moving the KAT-100 farther from the K2/100. One observation I made back when I was trying to track the problem down was that it did NOT seem to happen when I ran on a 12V car battery on my desktop but DID happen when I used my Astron 20A switching supply. It was not a conclusive test but I'll try again next week. How many others who are experiencing this erratic 40M behavior (resets the K2 etc) are also using switching supplies? Anyone having problems with a K2/100 and KAT-100 combo ONLY on 40M please contact me off-list and I'll keep track of all those who are affected by this problem. Re: [Elecraft] T1 internal to FT-817
Well...last night I finished installing the T1 internally to my FT-817 with help and suggestions from Nigel G8IFF and Wayne. After seeign the guts of the radio I decided I was not courageous enough to try to open up the DIN of the FT-817 adaptor and solder the leads directly to the board. I ended up cutting a corner out of the side of the plastic housing of the chassis DIN connector and also cut a notch into the outer layer of the DIN shell so that the cable would fit in the notch. This allowed me to pass the control cable through the same opening that the DIN plugs into (see photo). If I ever need to plug something else in there I still have the option of a Y-cable adaptor. I covered the battery compartment with mylar adhesive tape and put a piece of clear plastic cut out from a 3 ring folder cover to insulate the T1's boards from the metal case of the Yaseu. After drilling holes in the battery compartment cover using the original T1 case as a template I peeled off the T1 label, cut the bottom inch off and used it to cover the ANT and XCVR portion of the label and then stuck it on the FT-817. The LED's fit perfectly in the holes and keep the board from sliding around in the battery compartment and the cover presses firmly on the face of the T1 so it doesn't vibrate or wiggle in any way. RG-174 was run between the T1's BNC's and the SO-239 of the FT-817. I soldered directly to the PC as there was not enough room to use male BNC plugs to connect to the BNC sockets. At some point I will open up the radio again and take some close-up pics. In the mean time here is a photo of the finished project. You can see the DIN connector plugged in on the back of the radio but it is not apparant that the lead is going back into the same hole that the DIN is plugged into. http://www.k2ta.com/t1_internal1.jpg I have the Palm legs and whenever I change bands the T1 enters the green light blinking mode that is visible as a green glow reflected under the radio. If I hit a sting of dashes at that point I can force the T1 to retune. If I wait for the green flashing LED to stop after a few seconds the T1 uses the last remembered settings. If I ever need to read power and status etc I can always turn the radio on its side to press the buttons but in day-to-day operation the tuner is truely automatic and I never miss not seeing the LED's. Thanks to Nigel for his example and also Wayne and Eric for designing the T1 in such a way as to allow this type of installation to be feasible at all. I tune around at 800Hz bandwidth but typically operate at 150-200Hz. At such narrow bandwidths turning the DSP on and off has very little effect. On SSB and wider CW bandwidths the DSP sounds impressive. The KAF2 gives me the best bang for the buck. I forget the exact settings but I think it's around 1.4Khz for filter 1 and 200Hz for filter 2. The KDSP2 does have an operating convenience that lets it remember settings and track the IF bandwidth. Actually it might be more like saying The MFJ antenna analyzer cannot be used in strong RF fields and other analyzers that I have used cannot be used in strong RF fields so I wouldn't recommend buying an antenna analyzer to check a Field Day dipole attached to the tower of a 50KW broadcast station. I'm saying that ANY DSP radio Ten-Tec, Yaesu or Elecraft with RF or AF processing requires bandwidth to process the signal and throw away the noise. Once you get a bandwidth under 200Hz the DSP code has little to work with to improve copy and can actually degrade the signal by adding artifacts. Compare the KDSP2 to the KAF2 at 200Hz in a thunderstorm and then tell me which you prefer. Since you did not say what mode you intend to operate nor what bandwith you prefer I could only state my experience from my operating conditions. If you operated narrow bandwidth (under 200Hz) CW I suspect you would not feel the KDSP2 was worth the added expense. - Original Message - From: Alexandra Carter [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Tom Althoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Thursday, April 06, 2006 6:21 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] KAF2 or KDSP2 for K2 #5287 To me that's like saying The MFJ antenna analyzer has given me nothing but trouble therefore I won't buy ANY antenna analyzer. Re: [Elecraft] K1 AGC time constant
Ron ZL1TW and I have played with the AGC on the K1...here's a cut and paste from one of our exchanges earlier this year. My mod adds a .47 cap in series with the AGC On-Off line so that by turning the AGC off I can return to the longer recovery time (which I never choose to do). Not sure if the 22K between 9 and 10 of RP3 really did anything..I just left it in. My K1 effectively has a pair of .01 rf bybass caps in the AGC circuit in place of the original caps. Tom K2TA --- So I'm running .22 at C31.01uf at hmmm C67?...the one at the mixer chip. 22K across Pins 9 and 10 of RP3. (this is slightly less than your 47K across the same terminals). Lastly, I have the .47 in series with the AGC ON-OFF line. I must say there wasn't as dramatic change going from the .22 to the .01 as there was going from the 2.2 to the .22 but it is definitely better and as you say...probably can't hope for much more than that. __ - Original Message - From: Ralph Tyrrell [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, April 05, 2006 12:59 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K1 AGC time constant I did the exact same thing you did Rick. [Elecraft] Re: K1 AGC time constant [and how to radically improve K1 AGC]
I think what Ron and I were shooting for was not a really fast AGC but more of a Not-so-gosh-darned slow AGC. Wayne...doesn't 9 to 15 seconds for the S-meter to drop seems excessively long to you? Especially for a QSK rig. When I changed C31 from 2.2 to .22 the hang time seemed to approximate that of the slow AGC setting of the K2. The pop exists on strong signals with both the stock and the modified K1 but did not seem any worse after the mod. Is there ANY chance that a decimal point was moved between the design specs and production runs so that C31 is supposed to be a .22 instead of a 2.2 ufd? Those of use who see 9 seconds or more for the sensitivity to recover really like the 1 to 3 second recovery time after the cap values are changed. That's one great thing about Elecraft kits...you can make them perform just as badly as personal preference merits. I love my K1. And if I hadn't of changed the AGC time constant I would still love it. I just love it a litte bit more now. 8-) Tom K2TA - Original Message - From: wayne burdick [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft Reflector Elecraft@mailman.qth.net Cc: Ralph Tyrrell [EMAIL PROTECTED]; Tom Althoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Wednesday, April 05, 2006 4:05 PM Subject: Re: K1 AGC time constant [and how to radically improve K1 AGC] As the principle designer of the K1, I just love these AGC circuitry discussions, and thought I'd better put in my 2.5 cents. The K1's present AGC circuit, being AF-derived, is a compromise between attack time and recovery time. This topic has been the subject of scholarly efforts by Haward, DeMaw, and others, so I'll just summarize by saying that the slow rise time of an AF-derived signal limits how quickly you can respond to a large signal using a simple diode detector. Nearly all low-cost QRP transceivers that have AGC at all use this technique, including all of the ones I've designed (KX1, Sierra, NC40, SST). DSP can be used to emulate a faster response using various techniques, including post-processing of the signal as it propagates through the DSP's pipeline. But assuming one wants faster AGC without having to write DSP code, a relatively simple hardware-based improvement is possible. Actually implementing it is left to the reader, and here's what you need to know. If you look closely at the K2 Control board schematic, you'll see that the K2's fast AGC is obtained using an auxiliary I.F. of around 150 kHz. This is 100 times higher in frequency than the audio signal that the K1 uses to drive its AGC detector, eliminating the rise-time problem. The same technique could be used in the K1. You could start with the K2's AGC circuit (mixer, amplifier, and detector), perhaps breadboarding it on a proto board. You could pick off the 4.915 MHz I.F. signal from the output of the K1's crystal filter, routing this to another '602/'612 that has its oscillator running at 5.068 MHz (a common crystal frequency). As in the K2, you'd then need to amplify and detect just the 150-kHz difference product coming out of the mixer. Various circuit simplifications may be possible relative to the K2's circuit, which also includes manual RF gain control, T/R swiching, and AGC on/off control. An important subtlety: optimal results might require gain-controlling the auxiliary I.F. mixer at pin 2, using the same derived AGC signal that drives pin 2 of the K1's RX mixer and product detector. This would ensure that the aux I.F. mixer's gain is scaled downward at the same rate as the product detector as signal voltage goes up. This was not necessary in the K2 case, because the I.F. amp (MC1350) is the only gain-controlled stage, and it is ahead of the auxiliary I.F. mixer. If anyone tries this and succeeds in creating very fast AGC for the K1, we'd be happy to publish it as an application note on the web site. Who knows? It might even make a nice little option module. The entire circuit, if done using SMD parts, could fit on a board placed underneath the K1's RF board. I'd do it myself, but I'm a bit busy :) 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. I added a SPDT switch as per an Elecraft suggestion that directs both Ant-1 and Ant-2 to the Ant-1 jack. This gives me two separate settings of my KAT-100 tuner, one for SSB and one for CW which on 80/75 makes quite a big difference. Once I had all the settings per band/mode/vfo set up I could just press a single button for VFO-B, Mode becomes SSB, Ant-2 gets selected. NICE!!! Pretty please Wayne! While I predominantly use CW, I do join in ( and sometimes run) a CW Improvers Net once a week, where we direct the Net using SSB and switch to CW for sending and receiving practice. I have to set up one memory on 3.580 (SSB)and another on 3.5792 (CW) and use the old double button push across the face of the set to change modes. I have been known to miss, and end up sending on a different band before I wake up to the fact. So how about it Wayne?? Is it in the pipeline, or is it not feasible?? Re: [Elecraft] Xtal Socket - a bit off topic
And if you take two FT-243 xtals and tape them upside down and back to back you can electrically switch between two crystals at a time and flip them over mechanically for a total of 4 frequencies (if there is headroom for the pins that will be sticking above the top of the crystal that is plugged in). Re: [Elecraft] Raspy sounds on 80 meters
Steve - Most likely a magnetic field problem. I had a similar experience. I've learned to keep the Titan II and its huge transformer at least 2 feet from the K2 when it is turned on etc. But I got caught recently with a Radio Shack giant LED 24 hour clock. It is the same width as the K2 and looks really slick on top of it. After scratching my head trying to move the rotator control box, the Ten-Tec 1amp supply and its transformer away from the K2 I finally lifted up the clock...the distortion went a way. There must be a decent sized transformer in the bottom of the clock case. Have you moved anything closer to the K2 than before? I wonder if this can be turned into a feature so we can add 10M FM to the K2 from an external audio signal fed into a big coupling coil under the K2? THIS IS A JOKE NOT A FEATURE REQUEST!! 73 de Tom K2TA - Original Message - From: Steven Pituch [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 'Elecraft Reflector' elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Sunday, February 26, 2006 9:04 PM Subject: [Elecraft] Raspy sounds on 80 meters Hi all, I have been doing CW nets on 40 meters for a few weeks with a lot of success. Re: [Elecraft] Drift-K1
AHA!!Now I understand. I installed the backlight at the same time that I built my K1 so I never came across the instructions to use it as a spacer...although it sure seems thicker than the gap between the display and the backlight but I'm going just from memory. So for those of you who build a K1 and install the backlighting option you can mount that unused rubber piece between the main printed circuit board and the bottom cover to prevent shifting of the VFO when you press on the bottom. Not that that is a real problem in normal operation. Again...I attached mine to the bottom cover and left the anti-stick paper attached to the side facing the pc board. - Original Message - From: Don Brown [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Elecraft Discussion List elecraft@mailman.qth.net; Tom Althoff [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, February 23, 2006 7:40 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Drift-K1 Hi If I remember right that 1/2 inch rubber with the sticky tape on it is used as a spacer for the LCD display. [Elecraft] K1 Fun in ARRL DX test...
I played around during the last hour of the ARRL DX contest over the weekend. After a few Q's with my K2/100 I switched over to the K1. Bam! Bam! I was raising EU's with one call using 5W to a rotary trap dipole at 35 ft. Worked 28 countries on 40/20/15 in 35 mins. It was like riding on Space Mountain for the first time! It dawned on me. There has always been a discussion of K1 vs K2 (apples and oranges in favor of the k2 of course) but I had the overwhelming feeling that if I could forgo the internal battery and noiseblanker in exchange for a 160-10M K1 that it could be my ONLY radio. It was that much fun! So after the 800W and 1500W amps...somewhere down the road I would love to buy and build a 160-10M K1-9 that did not require module changes. Did I say a K1-9? Maybe it should simply be called the K9? Ruff! Ruff! Or the Elecraft Pup? Tom K2TA ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] WA3WSJ: DX Pileups
Back in the 70's there was listening to a pileeup run by a famous VK (or it MIGHT have been a famous ZL) who was standing by for East coast US stations on 20M SSB from a little island in the Pacific. A W6 kept calling and calling. The VK asked Are you on the East coast to which the response was You're 59 in California. The VK said Thank you. You are in the log. QRZ East coast only. And if anyone else wants to be in my log with a DO NOT QSL entry next to their callsign feel free to call me from anywhere other than the East coast of the US. The pileup became VERY well behaved after that. Haven't heard him do that in a long time and I don't know if that W6 ever was really blacklisted but when a DX station maintains discipline...all benefit. One critically important thought I believe you might have overlooked. That is simply this: The DX Station Is In Control of the pileup (or should be). If he or she says QRZ W7Y?? and comes back to KP4XYZ, he has just created a problem. The new breed of good DX operators stick by their directions. They also send their call frequently (preferably after each QSO) and every so often send their name, qth and qsl info and also tell if they are QSX'ing up or down. Following these ideas elminates the need for the ever present LID to get on the DX frequency and ask Call? QSL info? etc. Of course the Lids are like the Force...they will always be with us. DXing from the other side is great fun. 72/73 and hope to beat you in the DX pileups gr Tony, W4FOA ex EL2AD, 7Q7AA, PY1ZBA, etc. - Original Message - From: Edward R. I've operated as WA3WSJ/KP4, WA3WSJ/C6A, V26ED and VP5ED. I used the WA3WSJ/C6A call around twelve times. Almost all of these Dxpeditions were for CW contests such as CQWWCW. When I operated as VP5ED, I had over 1200 QS in 48 hours using my K2 at 5w (s/n 321). Here is what a DX operator is listening for: Any SEMI-CLEAR SPOT! When you call cq as a needed dx station, the fun starts after you are called out on a few reflectors. All the Dx operator hears is a buzzing sound in his headset. He tries to pull something from this hornets nest by: 1. Reducing the RF Gain on the rig to work the big boys and get them off the pile first. If you hear him working the strong ones - wait. 2. I moved my RIT control around some. I liked to listen below my sending frequency as most listen above. I must admit that I sometimes was listening 1-2kz away from my sending frequency. 3. The most important thing to do is LISTEN! 4. If the Dx station stops sending, don't keep sending your call. Sometimes we go to the bathroom, get a drink etc. 5. If the DX operator is listening say 1kz away, PLEASE DONT SEND ON HIS TX FREQUENCY! This happens all the time when a newbie to the pile DOESN'T LISTEN. All it does is slow down his rate. 6. If you don't hear the DX station, wait a minute or two then look for him somewhere close by. I have had to move away from a huge pile because I no longer had control of it using 5w. Don't worry the pile will find him VERY quickly. These are just a few of the tricks of a DX Operator. I could write a book on my experiences of operating as DX. I always had a fun time and got to see new countries and meet new people. If you never have operated as DX - what are you waiting for! I can't tell you how many hams have said to me, I'm gonna to that some day. Well folks some day never came because they died before getting the opportunity to do it! Don't let this happen to YOU. Re: [Elecraft] K1, calling CQ, 2x QRP QSO.
When I was testing my KPA-100 to see how hot the heat sink would get during contest level CQ'ing and didn't yet have my 300W dummy load I set up the K2 with an automated CQ on the low end of 10M around 28.013.I figured it was a safe time of day on a dead band that wouldn't bother too many people (and not bother me with having to stop my tests to have an actual QSO). It was about 8AM ET and I had been testing for about an hour when a VP8 (who also happened to be using a K2/100) answered one of my calls. So the dead band came alive long enough to get me a new country on 10M at the bottom of the solar cycle. I hear people say that you need to listen more than CQ when you are QRP. But believe me...there are a bunch of us people who's ear's perk up when we hear a faint CQ in the noise. The weak signal is the one that attracts my attention although I have to admit to a slight letdown when a K1 with a K1 is not the VU7 I'd been hoping for. Good luck and keep CQing!Don't be afraid to get on at 3AM on 15M and call CQ. You just might find a kindred spirit who is not able to sleep either and have a great QSO. Re: [Elecraft] k2 iambic modes
Dan is right...it now comes down to personal touch. K can be squeezed (both paddles held and let go at the 2nd dash) or dit-inserted (while holding dash, tap dit then let go). Dan's chart shows dit inserted paddle movement. I squeeze my K's and this is where the difference between the two modes bites the A user... Mode A K squeezed looks like this. Dah lever: DAAH Dit lever: DT Keys Daaah di Dah A mode A user squeezing a K in Mode B looks like this: Dah lever: DAAH Dit lever: DIT must let go of dit paddle sooner to avoid last dit. KeysDaaah di Dah dit The 2nd example is really how a B moder would send a C but if he sat at A mode keyer he'd only get a K! It's going from one mode to the other that causes mistakes...neither mode is bad. B allows for less finger motion I believe and perhaps if it was available when I first learned iambic keying I would prefer it. I actually mix sqeeze with dot and dash insertion fingering nowadays because it seems to generate the correct letters most of the time for me. Whatever floats your boat. When the Orion first came out it ONLY offered Mode B. There were enough complaints to cause them to add mode A in an early firmware update. We are a nation divided! The limits of where you can let go of the DAH paddle probably differ, but the normal K is the same in both A and B. Hold the DAH for the duration of the letter. Stick in a dit sometime before the end of the first dah. Maybe mode B will create an additional dah output if you release the dah inside the letter. I don't know, because that's not squeeze (iambic) keying. That's just wrong. Re: [Elecraft] K1 in big contest
Gerhard - You'll definitely have fun especially if you are just looking to spend a few hours in the contest. I run my K1 @ 200Hz during contests and it separates the stations well. I hear the front end is not as bulletproof as the K2's but I have not experienced intermod in any of the major contests. Perhaps people are referring to multi-op stations where the strong RF is very local. You'll only wish you brought the K2 if you suddenly get the urge to work SSB, RTTY or all bands. I run 40/30/20/15 and with the 40/30/20 I pretty much can get test QSO's at any time of the day. In my opinion the 5W transmitter in the K1 is outclassed by the RX. In other words...you'll have no problem copying someone who can copy your signal beneath the test QRM. When DXing and operating split (VFO A tuned to the DX station, VFO B on the QSX frequency), it would be nice to be able to use a narrow filter on VFO A while using a wider filter on VFO B. This would allow DXers to keep the DX signal free of QRM with a narrow filter while tuning for stations working the DX using a wider filter. That's my operating preference--narrow filter on the DX's frequency, wide filter while searching for just the right QSX frequency in pileups. Re: [Elecraft] The heart of ham radio
Hi Dale! I appreciate your sentiments and echo them. I've got 40 yrs of hamming under my belt at age 53 so I'm a decade behind you. There seems at times so many segregated groups snapping at each other these days. Code vs no-code, Ancient Modulation vs Sqawking Slop Buckets, Contesters vs Rag Chewers etc. I am left scratching my head. Are there really people who only operate one mode and hate all others? Or one type of on-air activity forsaking all others? I like them all and can't see the profit in arguing which is better or how bad the other guy is because of what he does. No offense to anyone but ham radio is just wierd. Contesting is wierd...try to explain to a non-ham (or non-contester) how you spent the weekend trying to talk to as many stations in Maryland in order to get a piece of paper. QRP is wierd (ok...it might be dangerous to say that here)...forcing the other guy to strain to hear you in the noise when you have a 1.5KW amplifier sitting next to the QRP rig. Building a radio is wierd...especially if you sell it to build another one. But I LOVE all those things...wierd or not. I wrote the following poem last year after being told that I was operating illegally in the AM band on 75meters after a 5 minute SSB QSO with a childhood chum who I hadn't heard on the air in 30 years. THE HAM When I turn on my radio on any given day I'm never sure what mode I'll use or how I'll choose to play Perhaps increase the total of my mixed DXCC Work a county, lighthouse or a state or an island on the sea Perhaps I give a point or two in the Boy Scout Jamboree CQ World Wide or Sweepstakes - makes no difference to me I'll chew the rag with QRP, join pileups with power My time is mine to choose how I will spend a given hour. Perhaps a classic rig I'll use to operate AM Use SSB on E-CARS to locate an old friend Use teletype on 20, play with slow-scan mode TV Use satellites or moonbounce with a mike or with a key What mode I'm on does not define the person that I am When asked how I define myself I simply say A ham - Tom Althoff K2TA - Original Message - From: Dale Kretzer [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, January 18, 2006 1:00 PM Subject: [Elecraft] The heart of ham radio As the new owner/builder of K1 #2092, I've been reading the mail here for awhile and want to pass along my compliments on the handling of this forum and my delight in discovering a great group of true hams. At age 63, I have 50 years of ham radio behind me and admit that up until a few months ago I was suffering burnout, very disappointed in the direction our hobby appeared to be headed. I felt the heart and soul of our pursuits were being left behind, that few were continuing the experimentation and construction so necessary to ham radio's growth and prosperity. I am so very pleased to find I was wrong. The vitality of ham radio is alive and strong within this fine group of Elecraft users. The brotherhood of sharing knowledge and troubleshooting skills, plus the challenge of QRP operating, is to be cherished and nurtured, and you all are doing a wonderful job of it. Like many of you, I've worked hard at self-educating myself with all the changes in electronics over the years, starting with vacuum tube equipment and graduating to construction of solid-state equipment. Most of this took the form of scratch-built test gear and QRP transmitters and receivers. Heathkit also was a big help in the past, particularly the HW-8, but nothing like it came along to fill the void until the creators of the Elecraft products burst upon the scene. Talk about a giant step forward in quality! The Elecraft team's combination of fine design, solid documentation, and immediate, friendly support has truly rekindled the fire in me to plunge headfirst right back into the wonders of ham radio. Reading all the discussions and following the threads on this forum has confirmed for me that I simply must purchase and assemble more of these great products, just as so many of you have done. If they are anywhere near as satisfying to operate as the little K1, I'm going to be in ham heaven the rest of my days. Thanks to you all for reaffirming my faith in this hobby, and for being the heart and soul of ham radio I thought had slowly faded away. One of the things I like best about the Elecraft list is how individuals approach problems and what they come up with for solutions. The taping of the resistors before soldering them to the backlight display Mike is neat idea and one that I have never thought about but will use at the very next opportunity. I love the backlight. [Elecraft] KRC2 users?
I don't think I've seen any comments regarding the KRC2. Ever since my K2/100 booted my Orion out of the shack I have been using my Array Solutions Rat Pak auto-antenna-switch in manual mode. The KRC2 would put me back in auto-antenna mode again. If I connect the KRC2 to my K2 I assume I can control the K2 from PC software transparantly from any software package that controls the K2 now. Hi Jim - I got the mike connector from my local Radio Shack...I think I had to ask for a Kenwood microphone connector. I use MixWin and set the K2 for VOX operation instead of PTT. I have the Heil Pro headset whose adapter has a nice jack for a mini plug for the microphone and a 1/4 jack for a foot switch. I just unplug the boom mike from the adaptor (not unplug the adaptor from the K2) and insert the audio plug from the soundcard in the PC. Re: [Elecraft] QRZ? is not CQ
When many stations are calling me then QRZ? as in Who is calling me? seems a reasonable thing to send instead of initiating a new CQ. Traditionally (my tradition...not anyone elses) I use CQ to originate a call for anyone. If no one comes back I CQ again. If I get 2 or more stations calling me I will call one and at the end of the contact, especially in contest or short DX-style QSO's ask QRZ? as in Who ELSE is calling me?. Keith - I was reading that the predicted low of the current cycle supposedly takes place this September. Using my K1 @ 5W there has been an opening to Europe every day for the past two weeks on 15MI was impressed that there were any stations outside of the usual North/South paths during sunspot minimums. I worked 12 different countries on 15M sometimes hammering out the QSO in a pileup with other higher power stations in the US. Did you build #1014? I did not build my #1117 but I did to some serious repair work on it. I then added the noise blanker, KPA-100, SSB and KAF-2. I did the A to B upgrade and all the other mods. If I was facing your decision and I could afford it I would build a NEW K2 so I can have the satisfaction of a 100% self built Elecraft rig. It is much easier and more fun to build from scratch than you go back in and modify a rig that was already built (IMHO). Also if I bought a new K2 and it didn't include it already I would add the magnetic shield mod. You can always sell your #1014. Also..the new K2's come with the chassis for the 60M accessory where your 1014 and my 1117 would need to have the bottom cover replaced. Go for the new Craig! [Elecraft] K1 AGC Mod revisited
Ron ZL1TW and I have been bemoaning the slow recovery time of the AGC that we were experiencing with both of our K1's. Ron's been doing some experimenting as have I using componants from out junkboxes. What we ended up with was changing C31 from a 2.2ufd cap to a 0.22ufd cap. Ron added a 47k resistor between pins 9 and 10 of RP3.I had a 22k here and used that value in my K1. We then changed C67 to a .01. Basically it became an RF bypass cap rather than any kind of AGC timing cap. I would now describe the AGC time constant more along the lines of the slow agc setting of the K2 but much quicker than the stock K1. Additionally, in MY K1 I added a 0.47ufd cap in series between the /AGC OFF line and the positive side of C31.When I turn OFF my agc the time constant gets greater and sounds closer to a stock K1. A 1ufd or even the original 2.2 from c31 or C67 could be used here. I never use the K1 with the AGC off so this gives me a rudimentary Fast/Slow setting on my AGC. Of course...those of you who used the /AGC OFF line to change the brightness of the backlight would not be able to take advantage of this. Unless perhaps Bright background = Fast AGC, Dim background = Slow AGC 8-). Neither of us are recommending that anyone else make these changes. We're just letting people know in case there are others who find the slow recovery time of the AGC a bit too long for their liking in the stock K1. 73 de Tom K2TA K2-TA-100 #1117 K1-4 #2146 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Kevin was 579, Tom was 339, Fred KD6GW was 599+ with his K2/100. I got to the 40M net late thinking it was on 7050 and by the time I heard Tom N0SS he was closing down the net. I had been very busy all day on chores, working on lists, invitations, and planning for a memorial service. I have not announced this to anyone other than those who have asked but I had a personal tragedy on the 10th of December. My wife of ten and a half years passed away. This net is good therapy for me so it will continue. She very much enjoyed working around my two skeds on Sunday evening always making a very nice meal for us to eat after the first one was over. She enjoyed hearing the news from all the folks we had worked. Pat had an amateur license but was more interested in public service than any other aspect of the service. She and I had worked for ARES and RACES for a few years. She had been trained as an EMT and a dispatcher while working for the local county's 911 center. Between us we taught a number of ECOM classes for the local ARES/RACES group. We had a lot of fun making the classes effective and the training meaniful for our area. Carter Craigie, N3AO, and his lovely wife Kay, N3KN, whom we had met while staffing the Elecraft booth at the SeaPac hamfest a few years ago, helped us on more than one occasion. I would like to post a photo of KD5PZO but the rules of this Reflector do not allow it. If you'd like you could send me a note and I'll return it with an enigmatic photo of my very good friend. It looks like someone is going to be told something but I am not sure if it would have been good or not ;) She was most charming and I will miss her very, very much. On the first net there was some QSB but we had fun. I chatted with Tom a bit before the net and then reminded myself to slow down. When I called CQ the first time VE1RGB and K4TO sent simultaneously. But Gary lost to Dave due to the shortness of K4TO :) The same thing happens to me but there is no way I will change my call ;) I like it and the way it sounds on CW so in a contest I'll just have to take my lumps! Dave was medium to weak but that's OK. Gary boomed in from NS very well. So well in fact that Tom had him call CQ once or twice. Tom, K2TA, had a good signal to me but as all the rest there was some QSB to contend with. Fred, K6DGW, checked in from CA and has he had predicted his signal was light. However, my bud Karl, N7NLU near the West Hills of Portland was fair copy. I never can predict how he'll come in but then he may have been hiking in the rain with his K1 :) AK7A, Jason in Washington was not even ESP to me. At this point Tom had Gary call the net and he landed KT5E, Jay in Colorado. Jay had a very fast, warbling QSB on his signal but still not too hard to follow. Then we heard from Ric, VE3XL in Ontario. It was good to hear him again. I hope he has his Elecraft rig back in shape! On to the lists. At 2400z on 14050.50 kHz: N0SS - Tom - MO - K2 - oo8 K4TO - Dave - KY - K2 - 4117 VE1RGB - Gary - NS - K2 - 2519 K2TA - Tom - NY - K2 - 1117 K6DGW - Fred - CA - K2 - 4398 N7NLU - Karl - OR - K2 - 4227 QNI #45! AK7A - Jason - WA - K1 - 2024 KT5E - Jay - CO - K2 - 5037 VE3XL - Ric - ON - K1 - 968 ?? QNI #80!! The second net began when I heard Tom tune in. We chatted a bit and then I started my QRL routine. Dave called with a much better signal than he'd had on 20 meters. Tom gathered in our lost sheep Ric who must be busy since we've not heard much from him since just after he lost his K1 :( I hope it is better now Ric. Randy called from Idaho with a large amount of slow QSB. A note about Jay further down this account. Mark called but I thought I was missing a letter between K and 8 but I had totally missed the N the first few times. He had the same slow, deep QSB as everyone East of me. Tom was quite good before the net but as Jay mentioned signals went down within ten minutes of starting. Lastly Rick showed up running his KX1 with a respectable signal. Some QSB: he went from S1 to S6 but 80% copy is good enough to find out he enjoyed Christmas :) At 0256z on 7045 kHz: N0SS - Tom - MO - K2 - oo8 K4TO - Dave - KY - K2 - 4117 QNI #5 VE3XL - Ric - ON - K1 - 968 ?? Re: [Elecraft] K1 with internal battery
Thanks Mike and Paul! I was looking at the photo on the Elecraft website and saw there where still provision for four 3D screws to hold the cover on and imagined a smaller cover directly over the batteries that had two knurled screws holding it in place. The verbal description of the two knobs at the back and the top slid under the lip of the front panel is exactly what I was looking for. From what I've seen on the web the poor KBT-1 is the least popular Elecraft accessory you can own. But, like the AGC mod, I need to see for myself. So it will go into my K1...but for how long? 8-) Tom K2TA - Original Message - From: Mike Morrow [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Tom Althoff [EMAIL PROTECTED]; elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, December 28, 2005 2:44 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] K1 with internal battery Tom asked: Does anyone have a link to a photo of a K1 with the KBT-1 internal battery installed with the K1's cover in place? I cannot find any photo's of what the two knobs look like to access the battery compartment. The knobs you speak of are just replacements for the two small screws that hold the K1 top cover on at the rear. The KBT1 screws have a larger knurled head that allows them to be loosened or tightened using only finger force. The replacement top cover that comes with the KBT1 is held in place in the front by a lip, so only the two screws at the rear are required. I removed my KBT1 after having it in place for about 18 months. I didn't like the looks of the KBT1 top cover and the sound of the micro speaker attached to it, compared to the original cover and speaker. More importantly, I don't like a source of potential chemical leakage from batteries inside the K1's case. There is no physical barrier around the KBT1 AA-cell pack that will retain leakage from a cell. I much prefer to use a small external 10-AA cell pack rather than the 8-AA cell pack of the KBT1. The KBT1 should have been made easily removable so that the compromises associated with having it installed need only be suffered when absolutely needed. The KBT1 *should* attach via a cable with a polarized two-pin female connector to a male connector *anchored* on the RF board. This would allow easy removal at any time. The current design has the connections made by soldered connections, and even if you jury-rig in a connector in the power leads, one side of the connector will then be floating around creating potential shorts when the KBT1 is removed. 73, Mike / KK5F ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K1 with internal battery
WOW! Great job Steph! I happen to have a 3-pin socket handy here. I think add the diode to the RF board and follow your example on the stock K2 cover too. Plus the 9-volt snap connector is fast. Also allows 1 or 2 quick contacts with a 9 volt transistor radio battery in a real emergency. Neat idea! I have made some modifications though that will make using it much easier, including adding my own jack on the RF board so that I can add / remove the entire battery kit without soldering. Where the two solder points are to wire in the auxiliary 12 volts, the + point is directly under the switch, but the - point was next to the switch. I got a 3-pin female socket, similar to the one you get with the ATU - it's a 0.1 spacing 3 conductor socket. Anyhow I drilled a hole in the RF board, and mounted the 3-pin socket there. The two outside pins are both ground, and the centre one is for +12 volts. (not quite as good as a polarized plug, but I just used the parts I had laying around). I used the special diode they supplied with the KBT1 to go from the centre pin of my 3-pin connector, to the power switch - rather than having the diode being part of the KBT1 assembly itself, this means the diode is right on the RF board, on the bottom. Finally, I used some hot-melt glue on the top side to provide additional strength to the 3-pin socket. For the wiring from the KBT1 bracket I used the supplied red and black wiring, and just terminated it on a 3-pin header. The last thing I changed was rather than using discrete AA sized rechargables, I had a battery pack assembled. This allowed me to use the larger diameter AA type cells. Without the plastic battery holder there is more room for batteries. So I have a 9.6v 2000 mAh battery pack made up. On its terminals I added a '9-volt' style snap connector, and to the KBT1 switch I put another '9-volt' style snap connector. This lets me easily pull the battery pack out and drop it into my Maha quick charger, without removing the KBT1 bracket etc. I still have the 8-AA plastic holder of course, and with another 9- volt style snap connector on that, I can just as easily drop that in and load it with off the shelf AAs if needed. In the meantime, I also used two small strips of brass to add a little 'lip' to the stock K1 top cover, because I like the ease of opening it with just the two knurled thumbscrews at the back. So now the whole process of switching from the 'normal' K1 to the battery powered unit takes me under a minute - just unscrew the thumbscrews, remove the stock lid and speaker, drop in the KBT1 bracket, plug in the speaker, plug in the power cable, and put on the KBT1 lid and screw it down. No tools required at all. 73 de Stephanie va3uxb ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Subscriber Info (Addr. Hi Thom! Do you have oil heat? They say gas heat is cleaner. Perhaps the ignitor produces short clean noise spikes in my furnace? LOL. Seriously...if you have problems with the furnace ignition one thing that worked GREAT for me and did not mess up the radio with intermod products was that noise cancelling antenna from MFJ...hmmm...the 1024 or 1026?That worked 100% to eliminate the noise when I used it with the internal noise whip. [Elecraft] noise bursts in K1
Well...let's see if I can go three for three here before the year runs out. Are there any K1 owners who are experiencing the following behavior of their K1's? If I use low impedance headphones I do not notice anything unusual. If I use high impedance headphones and I turn down the AF gain all the way I hear random bursts of noise. Not quite a frying sound but a hissing hash that lasts for a half second or so and disappears. Another 10 or 15 or 25 seconds goes by and I hear it again. There is no fixed time between events and the duration is random as well. I'm wondering if the output amp chip is causing this and if it is normal? Re: [Elecraft] SKN / Bug - Just one request.
If you have a squeeze key you can wire the dash paddle through 2 diodes to the tip and the ring of the phone plug and leave the dot paddle to the dot line. You can then emulate a bug on the K2 if you have it set for auto-key-detect. I haven't tried it...I was never very good with a bug above 15WPM. [Elecraft] K1 mystery resistor left over...
Ok...I'm scratching my head. The last resistor on the tape never got called for duriing the assembly of my K1 over the weekend. My eyes are not as good as they once were and today's resistors I swear use PASTEL colors but this seems to be a RED-RED-BROWN and measures 221 ohms. I don't see a 220 ohm resistor listed in the K1 assembly manual. I don't see any 220 ohm resistor in any of the addendums. The radio seems to be working fine. Can anyone guide me to what this resistor was for?Hey..maybe I can connect it to ground from the AGC cap and shorten the time constant? [Elecraft] New K1 on the air!
Hello fellow Elecraftsmen - I finished aligning my K1-4 #2146 tonight and before I could get the speaker wired up and the cabinet bolted together I had a nice QSO with N5PHT in Texas for my maiden voyage QSO. I AM IMPRESSED WITH THE RECEIVER!!! I was worried that my daily use of my K2 would spoil me for any other radio. The K1 is no slouch. I can hardly wait to try it out on 40M under contest conditions. One of the first database programs I ever saw on a home computer was called WHATSIT? It stood for WOW! How'd All That Stuff Get In There?. So my K1 has now been Christened The Whatsit. 73 and hope to QNI the Elecraft Net one of these days. [Elecraft] K1 setback...
Well...my tilt stand and backlight kit arrived today which I ordered AFTER I had ordered my K1 and some parts to repair my K2/100/AT. My disappointment? For some reason the order for the K1 and the K2 replacement parts did NOT get shipped out last Friday as originally planned. 8-( They are going to do it today. Hopefully they'll have it overnighted for delivery tomorrow or Saturday at the latest. In the mean time I added the auto-tuner to the order. I assembled the tilt stand a few minutes ago. I suppose having looked at the photo on the Elecraft website so many times that showed the long support arms in place I was pleasantly surprised that wide range meant there were another pair of shorter support bars that just tilt the radio up to a normal viewing angle when placed on the desktop. I assembled the EC-1 project enclosure and mounted it on the tilt stand just to get an idea of how I want to operate. I plan on building a long-life battery pack into the EC-1 and perhaps set the K2 on top of it instead of using the tilt stand. So I am QRT unless those K2 parts and the K1 arrive in time for the weekend. Oh well. Time to make up some fused power cables for mobile and portable operation of my K2. Re: [Elecraft] Wanted KIO2
Wayne N6KR mentioned the following in a discussion about cable length between a K2/(100) and a remoted KAT-100 2. If you're using a KPA100 in your K2, and you do find that power readings are unstable with the long KAT100 control cable, you can disconnect the VRFDET wire at both ends of the control cable. This is because the KPA100 itself provides the VRFDET signal to the K2, not the KAT100. If you have no KPA100, though, you'll have to keep the VRFDET line connected, since the KAT100 supplies the VRFDET signal in this case. But of course power levels are much lower without the KAT100, and chances are there would be no RFI problem. My KAT-100 is attached permanantly to the bottom of my K2/100 and the control lines fed directly between the top and bottom units. Don W3FPR and I were discussing shielding the ribbon cable between the two units to discourage any RF voltage appearing on the vRFdet line but perhaps Wayne has pointed to the easy fix. Two questions: 1) Since vRFdet is fed from my internal KPA-100 Wayne says the vRFdet line from the KAT-100 can be left unwired correct? This would reduce any chance of stray RF pickup on that line. 2) If the above it true...in theoryI would not even need U6 (EL5146C) in the circuit of the KAT-100. Mine failed and was pulling down the vRFdet line in the K2. I'm going to install a socket at U6 in either case, populated or not. I was not aware that it is not used when running with a KPA-100. When I hit the tune button sometimes the K2 would start tuning and then half way through do a reset. In the end I measured the current into the 100 watt stage and found that as the tuner tried to find a match the current drawn would Go up and down as you would expect as the load changes. But I found that my 20 amp PSU could not cope with some of the very short current drain that it was asked for and dropped its voltage which caused the k2 to reset half way through its tune cycle . I was going to look for a better PSU , till I found how much a new one was! So in the end I have a 17AmHr Gell pack here that I float across the PSU’s output this will help the PSU cope with the odd high current pulse and also act as a standby Supply in the event of a mains failure. ASP stood for Attached Support Processor and the 370 controlled two 360's. We were force to learn JCL one night because our shift supervisor didn't like operator's standing around waiting for tapes to be mounted and thought it would be more productive to train us.. I used to know how to IPL the 370 and might be able to dial in F980 interrupt start start to recover from a machine halt on a 360. We ran load and go Fortran IV on a GE machine at Newark College of Engineering. Hand in the cards one day...get a printout the next. First there is an X class flare zooming toward us due to smack the ionosphere sometime tomorrow afternoon. The initial effects allowed some interesting DX contacts to be made on 10 meters. Make hay while the sun shines folks 'cause the slower fraction of that flare will most likely create a little havoc. 20 meters may, just may, be really good but 40 will be worse than normal. Re: [Elecraft] Re: Comparison
Hi William - If you are a member of the ARRL you can download the reviews of each radio plus the detailed reports too. I've owned an ArgoV, Orion and K2.Orion had best receiver but did not copy anything during close-in contest QRM/DX pileups that the K2 couldn't copy too. The ArgoV was poor compared to K2.The roofing filter in the ArgoV has to be wide enough to pass AM and FM signals relying on the DSP for selectivity. I had to move 17kHz up from W1AW before I could stop the AGC from pumping on the ArgoV. It was useless trying to copy DX on 160M when W1AW was on. With the K2/100 I can copy weak top band Europeans less than 1kHz away from the 45db over S9 W1AW signal here in NY with no problem. Here is my ArgonautV portable station with built-in paddle and auto-antenna tuner... http://www.k2ta.com/argonaut.jpg Here is my K2 portable station with built-in paddle and auto-antenna tuner...same money spent. http://www.k2ta.com/k2plus1_front2.jpg If you were trying to decide between the Orion and the K2 it would be a tough choice. I owned both and ended up keeping the K2 and selling the Orion. There's really no comparison in RX performance between the ArgoV and the K2...unless you really want general coverage, FM and only mode B keying along with poorer selectivity and close-in performance. The green LED readout of the ArgoV, however, is better than the Orion or the K2...It was readable across the room without my glasses and the best readout of any radio that I have ever owned. 73 de Tom K2TA - Original Message - From: wayne burdick [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: William E. Hi William (Bill?), There probably are independent comparisons out there somewhere. Meanwhile, both the K2 and the Argo V are listed in our receiver performance comparison tables: http://www.elecraft.com/K2_perf.htm This information is taken entirely from published ARRL lab tests except as noted in footnotes. We believe it to be accurate and unbiased. In the larger table (near the top of the page), transceivers are listed roughly in order of decreasing receive performance. It's a bit of an apples/oranges comparison because the rigs near the top are each best in class in one or two categories. For example, the K2 has the best 5-kHz blocking dynamic range (135 dB), and the Orion has the lowest phase noise (-138 dBc), and the IC-7800 has the best IP3 (+37 dBm). The K2 is also distinguished by having far lower current drain than any other top-rated transceiver. 73, Wayne N6KR --- http://www.elecraft.com ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] SSB audio level revisited
I've always experienced low RF output on SSB from my K2/100 when using my Heil ProSet Plus headset. While building my KAT-100 I also upgraded from 1.02 to 1.09 firmware on the KSB2 board. WHAT A DIFFERENCE!Now I get full power output on all bands in SSB mode. The sheet that comes with the 1.09 firmware only talks about the added vox setting of 0.2 seconds. Clearly other things have been done since 1.02. I just mention this in case there are others out there running old firmware in their KSB2's and are experiencing low RF output on SSB. 73 de Tom K2TA ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Re: K2+1
For those who asked about cooling. There is no top cover on the KAT-100...the bottom of the K2 is exposed (providing shielding between the KAT-100 and the K2) and the position of the aux fan in the DB-9 location blows air across and up through the ventilation holes in the bottom of the K2. I just finished some tests. I chose 45W output as it is good for digital modes and driving my KW amp to full output. After 7 minutes key down into a dummy load (Duty cycle? We don't need no stinking duty cycle!) the large heat sink is cold on the left side, warm on the left half and right side and very warm directly over the KPA-100's output transistors. The air bleeding from the front of the KAT-100 is cold. I suspect the basic K2 output stage is benefiting as well. Nothing like the fried egg feeling when I put my hand on the KPA-100 after CQing for 4 mins without the 2nd cooling fan mounted in the KAT-100. Ohif you don't have the 60M mod do NOT turn on the d1g menu settingsomehow that got set during my consruction of the K2+1 and the symptoms are a loss of PLL on 40M. The guys at Elecraft straightened me out on that in one e-mail. If anyone else builds their KAT-100 into their K2 I'd like to hear from them. 73 de Tom K2TA I looked at your photos and I was wondering about cooling of the K2's finals...There are ventilation holes in the bottom cover of the basic K2...My recollection of the enclosure for the KAT100-1 is that there are no ventilation holes in it...Do you run digital modes, and if so, have you experienced any heat build up problems?...73 Jerry, wa2dkg K2 # 2549 KX1 # 839 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K2+1 complete...and working
A few people have written with questions. Here are a couple more photos. The top cover of the KAT-100 is not used. Here's another photo of from the side showing how the two units are mounted to each other: http://www.k2ta.com/k2plus1_leftside.jpg Also...as an afterthought I added a toggle switch between ANT-1 and ANT-2. In one position the KAT-100 behaves normally. In the other position the output of ANT-2 is routed back to the ANT-1 connector so that a single cable is used for both Ant-1 and Ant-2. I have ANT-1 set up for CW and ANT-2 set up for SSB where the SWR is typically much higher. http://www.k2ta.com/k2plus1_back2.jpg 73 de Tom K2TA ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] Favor to ask...
I just finished the resistance check on my new KAT-100 and all looks ok. It was a fun project to put together. Winding those large toroids is a breeze compared to those in the K2 or KPA-100. I am going ahead with my K2+1 (=K3?) where the KAT-100 will be an integral part of my K2/100. I removed the feet and bail from the K2 and had to drill two holes in the bottom/rear panel of the K2 to mount a pair of 2D connectors so I can mate one-to-one with the KAT-100. I bought one of those cooling fans used in the KPA-100 (a bit pricey at $22.00 each!) and will be mounting it in the KAT-100 to blow across the bottom of the K2 output transistors (and eventually up out of the KPA-100 heat sink). I will be enlarging the hole where the DB-9 connector would have been if I had installed it in the KAT-100 and that's where the fan will be mounted. Instead of externally feeding the Elecraft bus signals via the DB-9 I want to tie into P4 of the KAT-100 circuit board and run a ribbon cable up to the control panel and KPA-100 header connectors. HERE'S THE REQUEST FOR THE FAVOR (took long enough to get here...thanks for reading)... Is there anyone on the Elecraft list who can fabricate a ribbon cable with the 10 pin female connectors to connect the Control panel of the K2 with P4 in the KAT-100 and the header in the KPA-100?I would need 4 inches between the 1st and 2nd connector and another 6 inches to the last connector. I'll post pics when this gets done in case anyone else wants to butcher their radio too. I think it looks pretty good...certainly unique. Another wierd behavior of the 28020 birdy is that is tunes the opposite of a normal cw signal and changes pitch in large steps. Re: [Elecraft] Fun question - Purchase price if K2/100 with optionsispurchased assembled
I agree with Adi. I'm sitting here with a check for $3,300 that arrived yesterday from the sale of my Orion to K9FLY. A ham in Germany got the Orion speaker, Inrad filter and microphone for $200. I took $280 and bought the KAT100-1 auto-tuner for my K2/100. The Orion has better ultimate selectivity, dual RX, general coverage, pseudo-dual-diversity and better SSB transmit capability and voice keyer. It is also large and heavy. You can fit four K2's inside an Orion. You have to press a button before you can change the RF gain, keyer speed or power level (PITA). I had both rigs side by side for 2 months and there was never a time under crowded contest conditions or deliberate jamming that the K2 didn't keep up with the Orion. Those were real world conditions. Whenever the Orion impressed me by pulling the VU4 out of the noise or a JA on 160 in a pileup I would switch over to the K2 and was even more amazed that I could pull it out on the little box too. A wired version under $2,000 would be reasonable. - Original Message - From: S55M [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Wednesday, January 05, 2005 2:37 AM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Fun question - Purchase price if K2/100 with optionsispurchased assembled Do you compare this radio to an FT1000` an Orion, TS950SDX? Re: [Elecraft] Mounting the KAT100-1 under the K2?
It would be nice if there were side panels to do that plus a modified top cover on the KAT100-1 with recessed cups for the 4 feet of the K2 to drop down into so that when all was said and done the radio/tuner would become one unit, solid side panels and flush with no gap between them along the front mating edge. And wouldn't it be cool if the IO buss could be passed down directly into the KAT-100 instead of tying up the DB-9 connector at the back of both units. - Original Message - From: Doug Faunt N6TQS +1-510-655-8604 [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Cc: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, January 03, 2005 6:13 PM Subject: Re: [Elecraft] Mounting the KAT100-1 under the K2? Yes..its the HV osc...I can make a theramin out of the diode/capacitor strings. Sadly..there is no trimmer cap that I can tweak. But lowering the power to get the KPA-100 to drop out kills the birdy which is fine in a pinch if there is a new country ...
