Re: [Felvtalk] for Kelley OT

2009-08-03 Thread Kelley Saveika
You are SO VERY welcome!
I strongly urge you to read his book - if it is not available at your local
library, you can get it at Amazon used very cheaply.
http://tinyurl.com/lv2rl4
*
*
*If he comes anywhere near you at all to speak - please do attend. It will
change your life. And have your tissues ready. He is my hero. I have
heard him speak 3 times now. I will drive anywhere within an 800 mile
radius just to hear him. He is that powerful.*

*P.S. He does not believe in killing FELV+ cats, just because they are
FELV+.
*
I have a copy of his book he signed for me - it says "Never doubt we will
succeed," and though I am not superhuman like he is, and I do sometimes
doubt, when I do doubt I get out my book and look at it and it helps.

Thank you so much for the compliment:):):)

Kelley, I am on an Ad Hoc committee regarding a new Animal Control/shelter
manager and new shelter (ours was destroyed in a flood - the 5th largest
natural disaster - last summer). We are making recommendations regarding the
new manager and shelter. We are hoping to have a greater focus on the
sheltering part of the position than in the past. We are also drafting
interview questions for the candidates. We are hoping the City will hire
someone who believes in the no kill philosophy. Earlier today I read the new
Cat Fancy article "a No Kill Nation: Is It Possible?" and had my first
exposure to Nathan Winograd. Tonight I was perusing your site and there he
is again! I didn't realize or remember where you are located and, of course
you would know him or of him. He is AMAZING. The links on your site took me
to tons of valuable information for our effort. THANK-YOU for this and all

Yes, but how much of that is due to the fact that they have been open to the
public since the beginning?

It seems a chicken and the egg thing to me.

We all want the very best for ALL the little ones--it is the one thing we
share. None of us, including you, have actually seen the AC video and whether
true or not, there is no need to become sarcastic or caustic. If this is a

I hope you can get this all squared away and the truth come out, I just
wish the rumor mongers would get their what they have coming but that
probably won't happen.

I do believe in the after life though and they will have to face
themselves and what they did here there, should be a pretty
uncomfortable time for them!!

Why in God's name did your vet start all this trouble???

Hi guys,

My cats were seized yesterday by animal control. I had taken some
sick animals to Emancipet for treatment and they sent the Austin
Police Department an email stating they were concerned.

I am in desperate, desperate need of monies for an attorney, since I
spend every cent I have caring for these animals. In this case I
could not give you a tax deduction as I do when you have so kindly in
the past donated to help my animals. I could send you a thank you
note and pay it forward to some other rescuers at some other time.

If all you can do is send your prayers that is also appreciated.

THanks,

Kelley

Re: Kelley, how is Caroline doing?

2007-05-29 Thread Kelley Saveika

I could have a CT scan done, which would rule brain cancer in or out,
but I don't see much reason to do that since brain cancer cannot be
treated.

We could test for toxo, but he says he's never seen a cat w/toxo that
came from Texas - he's only seen one and that cat came from out of
state. She's on the clinical dose to treat toxo.

That leaves dry FIP.

She *is* getting better, though she's not normal.

THey can treat toxo. It is treated with clindamycin (sp?). They
haven't tested for it. It has to be sent out to a lab and it takes a

If it is dry FIP or brain cancer, there aren' tany effective

I picked her up at 7:00 am. She seems much improved to me. She is
looking around and growling. Still taking nothing by mouth, on fluids
and tube feeding. They have narrowed the diagnosis to dry FIP or
toxo. Not sure why brain cancer is not in the picture anymore or if
they just didnt' write it down.

2007-05-28 Thread Kelley Saveika

Yes, that is what I thought he meant she was not doing.

Having seen the vet do the test, though, what he meant was that she
doesn't blink when a bright light is shined in her eye.

I went to see her and she feels better enough to growl. They are
feeding her through a tube now because they thought she didn't like
the syringe feeding.

Re: Kelley

If her eyes are open and she is not blinking at all she needs
eyedrops so her cornea does not dry out. If she is drugged up enough
to stop the seizures that may cause her to be so dopey that she
doesn't blink nearly as often. When I went to visit The 3 Orange
Boyz at the vet's right after their neutering they were so incredibly
doped up they just gazed at me with big round eyes, very amusing in
their cases! Their vet Auntie Dr. Val had placed each little kitten
chin on the top of his soft stuffed animal (they each have one, of
course).

She hasn't actually had a seizure in almost 48 hours. I think the
reason she is still there is all this neurological abnormality. Her
temp is normal, she is well hydrated due to IV fluids. She had a
bowel movement, it was normal. She's being syringe fed. She's just
not neurologically responsive.

I have a friend that swears Transfer Factor (an immune regulator)
saved the life of a cat of hers with panleuk. I've used it in the
past too. Lance on the list thinks it helps his Ember. Anyway,
it couldn't hurt to try it. Most of my guys like the flavor, I
mix it with baby food. Here's my original post about it:

taken from
cow's colostrum, they also use something from chicken yolks. The
idea is

to "educate" an immature or imbalanced immune system to bring it into
balance and help it ward off illness. I'm not even sure if it works,
but according to the studies I've read, it hasn't had any ill
effects,

even when amounts used are many times higher than recommended. There
have been good reports about general health, (shiny coat etc.)
from some

of the folks I know who are using it. There are several different
formulas for people and animals.

2007-04-15 Thread wendy
Kelley,

This really sucks! I would have lost faith in them as
well. Did you ask to speak to a manager and tell them
everything that happened, start to finish? When this
kind of thing happens, I try to speak to someone
higher up so that they are aware there's a problem and
can fix it. If I get bad customer service, like at
Walmart (imagine that), I let the manager know and I
usually get very good response, and then they are
aware of a potential customer service issue that can
be corrected. The service you received was
inexcusable, and I am betting given the opportunity,
they would make it right.

2007-04-14 Thread JENI RECA

Hi Kelley,
Maybe you should inquire with them if they have a back up plan if the city
does try to inforce thier pet limit law, like what are they going to do with
the animals. The only thing I think of is that you wouldnt want to place an
animal in a home and maybe that animal is the breaking point for a neighbor,
plus people are very fickle (we are not allowed to park in our driveway, we
live in a city, because a neighbor complained and called the city and our
drive way is not up to code because it doesnt have a cut out at the front of
the drive..go figure!) but at the same time we are over our limit of
animals and luckily nobody has complained (cross my fingers!) It is a fine
line as you want to place the animal in the best home possible and they may
be it, but at the same time you wouldnt want anything to happen to that
animal, and also you wouldnt want the shelter to get in trouble for knowing
that person was over thier limit and still placed an animal in thier home.
good luck

Hey Kelley,

Well, I am definitely in violation of city
codes...lol. So I have no judgement to make. I just
didn't know if there were certain written or
un-written rules that shelters follow when it comes to
that particular issue. The contract does ask how many
animals live in the home, so I know it's a factor.
I'll be interested to hear what the shelter owner
decides to do. She's in Austin too.

How's Joey doing today?

Hi Wendy,

All shelters do things differently. The most progressive ones don't

Hey Kelley,

What I noticed with these different results is Joey's

According to wikipedia, "Reticulocytes are immature

red cells in the human body" (or kitty body per me).
"Reticulocytes develop and mature in the red bone
marrow and then circulate for about a day in the blood
stream before developing into mature red blood cells.
Like mature red blood cells, reticulocytes do not have
a cell nucleus. They are called reticulocytes because
of a reticular (mesh-like) network of ribosomal RNA
that becomes visible under a microscope with certain
stains such as new methylene blue. I noticed that
Joey's reticulocyte count is fairly high on this last
set of labs, compared to the week before when they
were lower. I hope this means good things for him.
Maybe the wbc's are not killing off the rbc's so
quickly now, explaining his unexplained health?

Hi Gina,

That is so sweet of you!

One kitten looks like brown tabby, two orange and white, one orange,
and one gray. No black kittens, thank goodness (I love them just like
any other kittens but they are horribly hard to adopt out).

I'm swimming in cats.we pulled 15 2 weeks ago, one mom, 5 babies,
3 bottle babies ~ 2 weeks old, and 5 bottle babies ~4 weeks old.
These all went to one wonderful foster's house. I went back and
picked up 3 that are eating canned food and trying to eat solids.

So many moms with litters die in the shelter here..it is horrific.

I'm trying to recruit fosters as fast as I can. I wish I didn't have
a full time job so I could just do this all the time...But if I didn't
have a full time job I couldn't afford to do it...so glad we are a
501(c)(3) now so that contributions are tax deductible. It gives me a
lot more options.

Perhaps I mistyped the link.

Try this

and if it doesn't work email me again and we will figure it out.

This is how the conversation goes

I'm sitting here crying, and the guy in the cube next to me says:
"What's wrong?"

Me: (I don't remember name of cat) died.

Guy: Oh, a close friend?

Me: No, a cat

Guy: I'm sorry you lost your cat.

Me: No, (cat) was a friend's cat.

Guy: Which friend?

Me: Hideyo.

I don't remember how the rest went, but somehow it came out that
Hideyo was an internet friend. So now they just kind of ignore me
when I'm crying.

Todays tears are sponsored by Sue's Pepper, from the feline heart
list, which I dared to sneak over and try to read, and I sorely regret
it.

I called my vet yesterday and he says typically autoimmune anemia is

Aww Nina, Thanks. He is pretty comfortable right now, despite his
shockingly low RBC. He was eating this morning. He gained 3 ounces in 4
days which is GREAT. I just don't know what it means that the RBC is still
going down, but the WBC is going down too. The WBC is within normal
range.

He's only 10, which realistically means he could quite a few years left if
he can beat this. It isn't like he's 20, in which case I might make a
different choice.

I'm also getting really good at pilling cats. He's declawed (:() so he
can't claw me like my guys do. He's good at spitting out the pills and can
hold them in his mouth FOREVER without swallowing so I had to get good at
getting them in there:)

out of your pocket and not available for the next rescue.

It's a nasty quandary, but it sounds like you've thought about this, (of
course you have, you're in rescue!), and as hard as the decision is, money

Not necessarily - the conditions of anemia itself is a decrease of RBD
whether it's regenerative or non regenerative - you can have
regenerative type like Felix, but something in the body is killing RBC
as generated.. so get destroyed as well.

Like I said before, I don't know enough about this, but wouldn't the
declining RBC mean that his anemia is non-regenerative? I think it's
wonderful news that he seems comfortable and is eating, and gaining
weight! That's a very good sign. Sometimes I wish we didn't know what
the darn test results show, if he's appearing better, then he's doing
better!!

Heck, 10 years old is just a kid, (I should know I'm just past the
middle mark myself).

6 pills a day are a lot of pills. Have you posted all his meds to the
list yet? Are you using a pill popper? Some of them are better then
others, (some have better spring action and really shoot the pill down
the old gullet). They also help you place the pill far enough back in
their throat so they can't "cheek" it. I've gotten to be pretty good
at pilling using one. Make sure and chase the pills with something
liquid. If he'll lap some tuna water afterward, that should do it.
Have you tried my pill pocket technique on Joey yet? When their
appetite is good it works like a charm. The secret is to not use the
whole pill pocket, just enough to cover the pill and then hide it in a
tiny amount of something yummy. When they'll go for it, it takes all
the stress out of pill time. I just act like it's time for a treat. I
don't even hold my breath anymore while I watch them eat it :-) . Can
you have any of his meds made into transdermals?

When my guys spit out the pills, or hold them in their mouths, I calmly
explain that that won't do either of us any good. That Mom is not a
quitter and that it will be easier on all of us if they just swallow the
darn thing.

Thanks Hideyo,

He did not run coombs test. So the diagnosis is "suspected." See, my
problem is that I do rescue...so I have other cats in need of medical.
I know you have lots of cats too. But the problem is, if I spend all my
money on Joey (I am spending my personal money on a 24% credit card to
help him because people do not want to donate to a 10 year old cat. His
dad said he would send $100 but so far he has not). Anyway if I spend
all my credit card on Joey and then I have another cat who needs
treatment and I have spent all my money on Joey - then I can't help the
other cat. It is driving me crazy to try to decide what to do.

I have a cat coming in Wednesday that will probably have to have one eye
removed. But I don't know that yet, my vet has to see her. AIHA from
what I can find on the internet is regenerative anemia.

Dear Kelley, Nina wrote to me off list and I wanted to respond to you as
I am going through a very very situation with my FIV boy Felix -

I do wanted to find out more from you about the diagnosis of AIHA of
Joey - did they run coombs test to determine the illness of AIHA? Is he
regenerative anemia? Epgoen may help only if anemia is non regenerative
- my Ayumi is non regenerative anemia and we don't know why - it could
be from severe stomatitis - anyway, she Is not CRF kitty, but epogen
seems to have helped her as she is maintaining low 20's o PCV for now..

On the other hand, my Felix is highly regenerative, but his body seems
to attack his RBC - usually it goes down below 10 - he has had his 4 th
transfusion on Saturday - fortunately he has not had any reactions from
it.

My recommendation is that.. if it goes down lower and get weaker,
especially, if he will have hard time breathing, which will happen if
his PCV goes down further, I recommend that you do transfusion - even
with hermobartnella kitties, often times, they have to get multiple
transfusion until the med start working - but at least it will buy you
some time meantime..Felix is on steroid and on doxy as well.. I am still
waiting for his Hemobartenella PCR result (takes about one week form
Idexx) - I will continue to do transfusions as long as I can afford it
and he does not develop reactions - he feels so much better after his
transfusions - There is a page as to how to treat AIHA in case hyou
have not read it - I will forward it to you, as the suggest other drugs
if they don't respond to steroid - I am considering using for my Felix
as well.

You also may wan to ask your vet if you can get oxygen tank in case he
will have a hard time breathing.. I have used for my cats at home and
have it here all the time, and it has come so handy, especially a kitty
with severe anemia.

Thanks Wendy,

It is VERY scary. I did not ask him about Epogen. I asked him about
transfusions. He said that they are no longer recommended becuase those
red blood cells get attacked too, but he would do one for me if I
wanted.

Right now, for a sick cat, Joey is acting pretty good. He grooms a
little, and lies on his tummy with his head up, instead of on his side
with his head laying on the floor. He is quite feisty with me when I
give him his meds, too. He is able to walk on his own to the food and
water dish.

If he makes it he will probably have to be on steroids for life to keep
it from coming back.

Since he has been on the drugs - he had his first CBC on 3/21 and his

No, you can't write off interest on credit cards. It is worth it if he
lives.

But that doesn't really help much - you get about 30 cents back on the

He has been seen by my vet twice and not been diagnosed with any sort of
stomatitis. He did stop eating when he first got sick and lost 3 lb. Since
he has been on the drugs - he had his first CBC on 3/21 and his second
3/24. So he regained 3 ounces in 3 days. He is eating a lot now. I am
getting a lot better at pilling him since I have to give him 6 pills a day.
His WBC was down to the normal range the 2nd blood draw. Unfortunately his
RBC was even lower than the first time.

cannot spend all my money on this one cat, because if a different one

My beautiful Mai Mai had this awful condition. Her vets were wonderful
but the steroids took their toll. However, my alternative vet was very
helpful and able to get the condition under control for a pretty good length

I've never had or dealt w/ [that I can remember now anyway.] a cat w/

But I DO remember when my first Rottie was diagnosed with it..

What had me concerned was his lethargy, not common for him. Just laying
around, sleeping alot.

So, I took him to my vet. Was devastated when I got results!!! Mind you,
I WAS thinking positive, after all, he was my baby.

It's a nasty disease.. (Very prevalent for his breed as I learned
doing my research)

We tried everything as it progressed... PCV's every three days,

Thanks Wendy,

It is VERY scary. I did not ask him about Epogen. I asked him about
transfusions. He said that they are no longer recommended becuase those red
blood cells get attacked too, but he would do one for me if I wanted.

Right now, for a sick cat, Joey is acting pretty good. He grooms a
little, and lies on his tummy with his head up, instead of on his side with
his head laying on the floor. He is quite feisty with me when I give him
his meds, too. He is able to walk on his own to the food and water dish.

If he makes it he will probably have to be on steroids for life to keep it
from coming back.

Again, I am sorry, I asked the same questions you already answered here
- I am a bit stressed out with mjy current situations, please forgive me
- now he is over 10 years old.. the possibility fo FIP goes down
significantly.. now I am thinking does he have severe stomatitis by any
chance? My ayumi's PCV is very low, and she is on epogen and it's
working on her and she has non regenerative anemia - her glob is high
due to stomatitis- is he on epogen already?

On the other hand, my Felix is highly regenerative, but his body seems
to attack his RBC - usually it goes down below 10 - he has had his 4th
transfusion on Saturday - fortunately he has not had any reactions from

Hi Kelley,

I use Pet Health Pharmacy in Arizona.
https://www.pethealthpharmacy.com/index.html

They are great. And it's VERY easy to do refills with
them. I order a month's worth of transdermal
methimazole for my hyperT kitty, and it's 12.90, plus
a flat $4.50 s&h. So $17.40 for the month. That used
to be the cost for two months until we had to double
her dose. They have very reasonable pricing and are
very personable/helpful when I call.

Thank you! We've located lost cats after 4-5 weeks -- it really helps to
hear about one found after 2 months! While we haven't found Jack we also
haven't found a body or his red collar -- so there is hope.

I hope Jack comes home safely. I had a rescue kitty escape from my home last
year in early January and found her in March by the garbage cans, so you never
know.

It sounds like so much good will be done in his honor. Isn't that just
life in a nutshell? Since the folks in that area seem so kindly
disposed to animals, I'm wondering if someone has taken Jackie in, or is
at least keeping him fed. I know it must be cold out, but is your
friend keeping a window or door ajar in case he wanders back home?
Around 3am seems to be the time when they feel safe to attempt travel.
Has your friend been going outside and shaking a package of dry food
around that time? Since other's have been trapped, it sounds like traps
are being set where he went missing. How fortunate for the ones that
have been/will be helped. Thank you Jack, now COME HOME!

Hey Kelley,

I hope your new 'feral' kitty is doing well today. I
read all the threads today on her, and it sounds like
things are slowly going to work out. Thank goodness
she is eating!-I would have been panicked about that
too. Keep us posted on her!

Have Missy's portrait made--either by a professional or a friend who is
really good with a camera. Assuming you out live her, you will take great
pleasure in this. At least I have with my own critters. I truly enjoy
looking at their pictures. They remind me of how totally wonderful our
friends can be.

Dear Kelley,

You will be strong enough. You will be strong enough
for Missy, because you love her so. You asked how we
do it...I believe that the good Lord doesn't give us
more than we can handle. Of course, when times get
tough for me, the only way I can get through them is
by asking for help through prayer. If I didn't do
that, I would be much worse off. Those tears you cry
are not bad. They are cleansing, and help you to
grieve. Knowing Missy is ill allows you to grieve
beforehand, and strangely enough, will help you to
accept the inevitable, Missy's passing. Thank God you
are there for Missy to love her while she is here. If
you can, try to make the time Missy has left a happy
time, for you and for her. Celebrate her life with
her. Her life is beautiful and a blessing to you.
You will have time to grieve when she passes on.
Prayers going out for little Missy and for you.

:)

The sealer can add the shine that the shellac adds. Check under Acid blush
and concrete stain on the internet and disregard what they say about only
pros can put it down. Remember that the more the shine the slippery the
service so perhaps some sort of sand can be added

Hey Kelley,

My husband and I tiled our house ourselves this past
spring and summer. We did almost the whole house,
except for the master bedroom, master closet-pretty
small, and one of the other bedrooms. Our whole house
is a little over 1500 square feet, so it was quite a
job, but we did it, and it looks great. I would say
it cost under $4000, but we picked out porcelain tile
and what we liked. It could have been done for about
$2000-$3000 had we gone cheaper on the tile. Also, I
went to a friend's house last month that had the
stained concrete like Phaewryn was talking about, and
it looked absolutely fantastic. They stained it a
brownish color, and the concrete had been etched
(scored) to look like large tiles, 2x2 or bigger, and
then covered with a really shiny shellac. It looked
GREAT, and I bet it was not expensive. The only thing
about concrete is that it's porous, so the shellac had
to also needs to be a sealer.

Yes, it is propelyne (sp?) glycol they can't have. I have a huge tub of
l-lysine. My heart kitty Missy gets it.

can cause blood problems in cats). I couldn't believe
that the lysine made the ulcer go away after all that
time and meds.
