I got over the original problem last night by basically doing what you suggest. I didn't know about the force-remove option, so I manually removed all the dependencies for libjpeg, then installed it again. I then got a similar node exists message for zlib, so I did the same thing again. That let me get gnome-vfs working. Now I'm working on installing gnumeric (which was the reason why I needed gnome-vfs), and it complains about a node already existing for gnome-print. I'm trying a rebuild gnome-print now - if that doesn't work I'll remove and reinstall it. I'm starting to wonder if maybe something is wrong with the latest fink version. I've been using fink for several months and never had this sort of problem until the latest fink update. Now I've had three occurrences in two days of a Failed: Internal error: node for already exists where is a package name. Take care, Kevin Horton I finally got gnome-vfs and gnumeric installed. I ended up with three sets of Failed: Internal error: node for already exists during the process (where is a package name). In each case, the only way I found to move ahead was to remove the package and install it again. I also ended up with a couple of dependencies that repeatedly failed to compile, but I discovered that they were available in binary form, so I installed them that way. Install grass failed in exactly the same way again. I then rebuilt postgresql, but install grass still failed in exactly the same way. I read through man postgres looking for hints on this missing library - no clues there. I took a look in /sw/lib, looking for the missing postgresql library, but I can't see anything that looks like it. I rooted around the grass website looking for hints, but didn't learn anything. I did note they have a OS X install script, but that won't put it in fink's /sw tree, so I want to avoid that. fink -V shows me Package manager version: 0.9.9a Distribution version: 0.3.2a.cvs I did a fink selfupdate this morning, and a fink update-all (I didn't let it run the updates yet though as the packages that it wants to update aren't relevant to this problem). [Fink-users] package feedback idea
One of the big problems with the fink project seems to be getting feedback so packages can be moved to stable. I got so frustrated at constantly having to copy info and patch files to my local tree that I went whole hog and configured fink to use unstable. I suspect many users are a bit like myself - I've got so many packages installed that I've completely lost track of which ones are still in unstable, and there doesn't seem to be any way to find out, other than manually digging on each one. Most people are basically lazy, so feedback doesn't happen as much as it should. Is there some easy way to get a report of which installed packages are in unstable? I've reported positive feedback on the various major packages I have installed, but each one depends on numerous less visible dependencies. I suspect the various support packages are the last ones to get feedback because people never even think of them. But that'll still keep the main packages in unstable. I envision a fink option to assist the feedback process. fink --feedback. This would start an interactive process whereby the user would be asked if he could provide feedback on each major installed unstable package. He would have the option of positive, negative or no feedback. If the user selected negative feedback, he would be requested to add comments to explain the problem. Fink would automatically e-mail the feedback info to the package maintainers. If a major package got positive feedback, all dependencies that were in unstable would also automatically get positive feed, annotated that it was trickle-down feedback from package . After the major packages were covered, fink --feedback would check to see if all installed packages had been covered either directly, or via trickle down because they were a dependency of a major package. The user would be asked for feedback on any remaining packages until they were all covered. It would obviously be a fair bit of work to design and implement something like this, but I think the investment would be well spent, as it would facilitate moving packages to stable. [Fink-users] problem updating packages with binary distribution
I'm using the binary distribution on my old iBook (not enough disk space for the Developer Tools), and I've run into a problem when doing an update. I did a sudo dselect, updated the list of packages, and checked the list of packages in the [S]elect screen of deselect. I saw that two packages were in the section --- Updated packages (newer version is available) --- (imlib and netpbm-bin). I hit return to move to the next phase, and ended up in the dependency resolution process. I was informed that: imlib depends on imlib-shlibs (= 1.9.10-9) imlib-shlibs does not appear to be available netpbm-bin depends on netpbm-shlibs (= 9.24-4) The only way out seemed to be to put these packages in the hold state. I then tried apt-get to see if it would shed any more light: [ibook:~] kwh% sudo apt-get install imlib Password: Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. The following information may help to resolve the situation: Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies: imlib: Depends: imlib-shlibs (= 1.9.10-9) but it is not installable E: Sorry, broken packages [ibook:~] kwh% sudo apt-get install netpbm-bin Reading Package Lists... [Fink-users] Missing dependencies for grass?
I have made various attempts to install grass, which depends on postgresql. These attempts have always failed. I think there are at least two problems here. Problem 1 - Grass-5.0.0pre3-2 has a missing dependency to postgresql-dev 7.2.1-5. My attempts to install grass have always failed with: checking whether to use PostgreSQL... yes checking for location of PostgreSQL includes... /sw/include/postgresql configure: error: *** PostgreSQL includes directory /sw/include/postgresql does not exist. ### execution of ./configure failed, exit code 1 Failed: compiling grass-5.0.0pre3-2 failed Sure enough, /sw/include/postgresql was missing. Problem 2 - missing postgres_fe.h. Even after I install postgresql-dev, the grass install fails, apparently because it can't find postgres_fe.h (I'm no expert here - is this really the cause?) I rooted around in /sw/include/postgresql, and found /sw/include/postgresql/server/postgres.h and postgres_fe.h, and I found /sw/include/postgresql/internal/postgres_fe.h. [Fink-users] Abiword, X11 and font problem
I've got Apple's X11 Beta 3 installed on two Macs, my main Mac, and an iBook. The iBook is short of hard drive space, so all the X11 apps are on the main Mac, and if I am using the iBook, I ssh in to the main Mac to run them. Everything works fine on the main Mac, and all apps work from the iBook, except Abiword. If I ssh into the main Mac from the iBook, and try to run Abiword by running abiword , it complains about font problems when it starts up. Abiword was not able to add its fonts to the X11 font path. This does not mean that there is anything wrong with your system, but that you will need to edit your font path manually. Please see UNIX Font Path Problem in the FAQ section of the Abiword Help file for more detailed information ... AbiWord appears to start up, then there are two dialog boxes AbiWord could not load the following font or fontset from the X Window System dispaly server: [-*-Times New Roman-regular-r-*-*-*-0-*-*-*-*-*-*] This error could be the result of an incomplete AbiSuite installation, an in compatibility with your X Window System display server, or a problem communicating with a remote font server. Often this error is the result of invoking AbiWord directly instead of through its wrapper shell script. The script dynamically adds the AbiSuite font directory to your X Window System display server front path before running the executable. IMPORTANT: If you're a XFree86 4.x user, try adding: Load type1 to the Module section of the XF86Config-4 file (usually located at /etc/X11) Please visit http://www.abisource.com for more information. Abiword shuts down after the second dialog box is closed. I can't find the XF86Config-4 file - I suspect the Apple X11 file structure is different somehow. Looking at /sw/bin/AbiWord, I can see that the shell script tries to set up a bunch of font stuff. Does this work if I ssh in from X11 on another Mac? Can anyone recommend how to get AbiWord working if I ssh in from another Mac? Note, applesystemfonts isn't doing its thing either (i.e. the apple fonts aren't showing up in abiword on the main Mac), if that is any clue. Re: [Fink-users] trying to get openssh v. 3.7.1 to work
Alexander, Actually, I was quite glad to see you post the files, until I discovered they were for openssl, and not openssh. I too have been hoping to have openssh 3.7.1p1-2 show up in a fink selfupdate-cvs, as I noted the web site showed this version in unstable several days ago. But it appears that the problems with SourceForge are so severe that Fink updates are now a waste of time, as I have not received any new versions of anything for several days. SourceForge keeps saying that they have a plan to improve the situation, but it never seems to happen. I hope Max is working on a way to divorce Fink from SourceForge, because it has become pretty much impossible for an anonymous user to get any new .info files with a fink selfupdate-cvs. I used to be comfortable knowing that Fink would provide me with timely updates to critical software such as openssh. I know the developers have done their bit by updating the package, but it is a wasted effort if the users cannot access them. Don't take this the wrong way - I am very appreciative of the efforts that have gone into Fink. I am just frustrated to see it being dragged down by SourceForge's problems. [Fink-users] aspell and 10.3?
I use aspell as the spell checker with bluefish. I have been making fink packages for the various bluefish snapshots. Everything was fine until I upgraded to OS X 10.3. Now I get a crash when I try to spell check, with either bluefish 0.10 or with the recent snapshots. I am working with the bluefish developers, but they are suspecting that it is an aspell crash that brings bluefish down. I am wondering if somehow aspell might not be working 100% sanely under 10.3. It works fine from the command line, but is it possible that libaspell is not good? Does anyone else have any good or bad experiences with aspell under OS X 10.3? -- Kevin Horton Ottawa, Canada http://members.rogers.com/khorton/ --- This SF.net email is sponsored by: SF.net Giveback Program. The file /sw/etc/xml/catalog is produced by the script /sw/sbin/update-xml-catalog which belongs to the libxml2-bin package and is run in the PostInstScript of the libxml2-bin and the scrollkeeper packages and maybe others. Horribly complicated, and all kinds of things can go wrong. One thing to check is whether /sw/sbin is in the PATH. -- Martin Martin, Thanks for the pointers Martin, that was exactly what I needed to find the source of the problem. libxml2.patch has /sw hardcoded in it, so that the update-xml-catalog and update-sgml-catalog scripts run in /sw. I was wondering why those catalog files in my working fink installation were showing as having been created this afternoon. My new fink installation is not in /sw. The libxml2.info file is set up to tweak the .patch file using sed, but the .patch file doesn't have the @PREFIX@ placeholder that sed is looking for. I modified the .patch file by replacing all occurrences of /sw with @PREFIX@, and that allowed the install of gtk-doc to proceed. I cc'd this to gnome-core so they can fix libxml2.patch. [Fink-users] libiconv strangeness
I did something a bit unusual last night, and it may have caused me a problem. I decided to run debfoster to get rid of any unneeded packages that may have been dependencies of packages that I no longer have installed. It asked a bunch of questions about which packages I still wanted, and then proceeded to remove a very large number of apparently unneeded ones (172 if IIRC). I expected that the dependency system would keep it from removing any needed dependencies. This morning I did a fink selfupdate, and after rsync finished fink tried to install libiconv-dev. I had allowed debfoster to remove many .dev packages, as I understood that they contained headers only need while building a package, and that they served no purpose afterwards. The attempt to install libiconv-dev-1.9.1-11 failed like this: /sw/bin/install -c -m 644 .libs/libiconv.lai /sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw/lib/libiconv.la libtool: install: warning: remember to run `libtool --finish /sw/lib' if test -n ; then /sw/bin/install -c -m 644 /sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw/lib/.new mv /sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw/lib/.new /sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw/lib/ ; fi cd srclib make install prefix='/sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw' exec_prefix='/sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw' libdir='/sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw/lib' make[2]: Nothing to be done for `install-exec-am'. make[2]: Nothing to be done for `install-data-am'. cd src make install prefix='/sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw' exec_prefix='/sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw' libdir='/sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw/lib' test `ls -ld . | sed -e 's/^d\(.\).*/\1/'` = rwxrwxrwx || chmod 777 . if [ ! -d /sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw ] ; then /bin/sh ../autoconf/mkinstalldirs /sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw ; fi if [ ! -d /sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw ] ; then /bin/sh ../autoconf/mkinstalldirs /sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw ; fi if [ ! -d /sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw/bin ] ; then /bin/sh ../autoconf/mkinstalldirs /sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw/bin ; fi mkdir -p -- /sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw/bin case darwin7.2.0 in \ hpux* | freebsd*) gcc `if test -n ''; then /sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw/bin; fi` iconv.o ../srclib/libicrt.a -L/sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw/lib -liconv -L/sw/lib -lintl -liconv -o iconv;; \ *) /bin/sh ../libtool --mode=link gcc `if test -n ''; then /sw/src/root-libiconv-1.9.1-11/sw/bin; fi` iconv.o ../srclib/libicrt.a ../lib/libiconv.la -L/sw/lib -lintl -liconv -R/sw/lib -o iconv;; \ esac libtool: link: cannot find the library `/sw/lib/libiconv.la' make[1]: *** [install] Error 1 make: *** [install] Error 2 ### execution of make failed, exit code 2 Failed: installing libiconv-1.9.1-11 failed [EMAIL PROTECTED] 505 % fink --version Package manager version: 0.19.1 Distribution version: 0.6.2.cvs [EMAIL PROTECTED] 506 % sw_vers ProductName:Mac OS X ProductVersion: 10.3.2 BuildVersion: 7D24 I'm not sure why fink wants to install libiconv-dev, as fink list -o shows that all installed packages are up to date. The problem is that gettext-dev does not and cannot depend (in the sense of Depends or BuildDepends) on libiconv-dev, but it builds differently when libiconv-dev is installed than when it is not installed. So it does depend on libiconv-dev in reality and causes errors if one pulls libiconv-dev from under its feet. -- Martin That fixed it. Thanks Martin. Why not have an option to suppress them, configurable via fink.conf? That way the developers and maintainers could enable these warnings, but users wouldn't be troubled by them. The default would be to suppress warnings. I am getting this message on a MacOSX system (10.4). I used i-Installer to put teTeX on my system. II2 worked great, and it installed TeX (i.e. teTeX and friends) into /usr/local/teTeX/ and /usr/local/teTeX/{bin,share} have all that I want and need. As a final touch, I just wanted to inform fink that I had a nice teTeX installation and that it should be as happy as I am. But no-o-o, ... it goes around and checks for files and is unhappy that kpathsea is not on my system. Kpathsea is just a happy little utility for doing directory searches; it is certainly not required for running TeX. I suspect that fink is assuming that any valid teTeX installation would include kpathsea, and that the TeX i-package thinks otherwise. (By the way, I DO think kpathsea is a wonderful utility!) [Fink-users] fink -b install not working with local repository?
I think I have either found a bug in fink, or a special case that hasn't been covered by code yet, or perhaps a set-up problem on my machine. I use a PowerMac G4 as a binary package repository, to avoid having to build packages on the other three, slower computers that also use fink. I use the method suggested by Benjamin Reed on his web site: http://ranger.befunk.com/blog/archives/000258.html This works very well with apt-get, but doesn't seem to work properly with fink -b install. I recently ran fink scanpackages on the PowerMac, then updated apt-get on my PowerBook. Then I tried a fink -b install gnumeric. However, fink wanted to build some gnome stuff, even though all the .debs should have been available on the PowerMac. I aborted, then did a successful apt-get install gnumeric, which shows that all needed .debs were available. See the transcript at the end of this message for the details of what I did, and what happened. Do I need to add a Mirror-apt line in fink.conf to cover the unstable .deb repository on my PowerMac? If so, would the value I need be http://pmac/fink; (see my sources.list and fink.conf below)? If so, man fink needs an update. Or, should fink use the info in apt's sources.list? [Fink-users] apt-get failed to fetch ... size mismatch
I use our most powerful Mac to build packages I want from the unstable tree, and then have it provide them to the other Macs. That has worked very well until recently. I tried out xorg instead of Apple's X11 for a short period, and made the mistake of building some KDE stuff, so I could install khexedit on a PowerBook. I did an apt-get update to install the package on the PowerBook before I realized that I shouldn't have built it with xorg installed. I eventually ditch xorg, and went back to Apple's X11 on all Macs, and rebuilt packages as required to get everything working properly on the main Mac. But, subsequent attempts to upgrade the packages on my PowerBook fail as follows: sudo apt-get -u dist-upgrade Reading Package Lists... Done Building Dependency Tree... Done Calculating Upgrade... [Fink-users] remove xorg eats /etc/fonts/?
I've been troubleshooting a strange X11 font problem, and have discovered that /etc/fonts/ is missing. I did two things around the time of the disappearance: 1. move fink to a directory on another volume symlinked to /sw, and 2. remove fink's xorg package to go back to Apple's X11. I wouldn't have thought that either of those actions could cause my problem, but googling pointed me to an old fink-users e-mail from many months ago: http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=9509794 This message said that removing the xorg package would also remove /etc/fonts/. Is it possible that this bug is still around? If so, this is a major departure from the policy of not letting fink mess with stuff outside /sw. Can I just reinstall the BSD package from my original OS X 10.3 disks, or were /etc/fonts/fonts.dtd and fonts.conf updated in a later software update? My goal is to remove any unecessary packages that may have been installed as a dependency, but were not removed when the requiring package was removed. My idea is that I can build a graph of the dependency tree described in the .info files, then use 'fink list' to mark the status (available, unstalled, update available) of all packages, and present the information to the user. There are two packages that might do what you want: debfoster, and deborphan I've used both packages in the past, and they are both useful. In my experience, debfoster might want to remove a few more packages than you really want, so pay close attention to the list of packages it proposes before you tell it to action the list of removals. [Fink-users] Bold fonts in Mozilla and Firefox
A message today about messed up fonts in X11 prompted me to do an experiment. The original poster reported that his font display was improved by renaming the .fonts/ directory that was in his home directory. I tried renaming it, then launching X11. I could see no difference. So, I quit X11, then moved the directory back to .fonts. I started X11, and now I have bold fonts in Mozilla and Firefox. I tried several different fonts, and the bold worked for all of them, but I did not do an exhaustive test. However I am quite certain that some fonts that would not display in bold now work properly. At 9:28 -0600 27/3/05, Robert T Wyatt wrote: This is neat-hadn't heard of it before. The man page is huge and I'd like to get more familiar with setting screen to run fink compilations routing the log to a file (I understand this saves overhead on the display or buffer). There have been oblique references to detaching the session from Terminal so as to save the 7-8% cpu that it sucks up, does this mean that Terminal can be quit after spawning screen? Yes, you could quit Terminal after you detach the screen session (Ctrl-a d). But I don't think that the Terminal uses much CPU time after you detach the screen session, so I usually leave it running. Activity Monitor seems to show that Terminal uses less than 0.5% CPU just sitting there.
