[Freevo-users] How do I configure mplayer settings?
I have freevo installed and it basically works. I'm having trouble using the freevo version of mplayer. It simply doesn't play my avi files in the same way as the normal mplayer, which I built and installed separately, from the the unix command line. How can I tweak the mplayer parameters used by freevo? Am I supposed to put options in .mplayer/config? Can anyone point me to where the docs are on the syntax for these options? I've struck out searching for answers. [Freevo-users] Timeshift/mp1e -- a/v sync problems after v4l2 upgrade.
Dave, I've spent a lot of time trying to get mp1e to record properly outside of freevo. I've never been able to get the a/v sync correct in mp1e. If you look at the chatter on nvrec-devel on sourceforge, you'll find this has always been a problem. The claim is that if you ever get a/v sync to work, you're just damn lucky. I have a post in there and the developer gave me some pointers as to where in the code things could be hacked. I struck out. I did find that using ALSA instead of OSS had some improvement, but it eventually when out of sync. Did you ever get mp1e from CVS to have good sync? If you were using an older version of mp1e, my only suggestion is to go back. I starting using nvrec from CVS instead of mp1e, and the a/v sync is perfect. Too bad because mp1e is really fast, has good quality, and the file sizes are small relative to other encoders. [Freevo-users] Keyboard Mapping when running Mplayer
I'm struggling with the use of keyboard keys when using freevo with mplayer. While using the freevo menu, playing audio, images, etc., the keyboard uses the freevo keybindings as I would expect. When I watch videos or movies using mplayer, I need to use the mplayer keyboard mappings. I am under the impression that mplayer would use the keyboard mappings from freevo, since freevo sends the commands to mplayer since it's operating as a slave to freevo. This is causing me problems because I'm using an RF remote, not an LIRC device. I need to issue commands from the remote using the a2x program which sends keyboard strokes to the current X application. My keyboard strokes appear to be sent to the mplayer application (which consumes the entire screen) instead of freevo. My problem is caused by the fact I cannot determine at the unix level if freevo is using mplayer for video, images, or audio. When watching videos, I need to use the mplayer keydefs, otherwise the freevo keydefs (audio and images). Does this make sense to anyone? Is there anyway I can determine at the unix shell level if mplayer is being used for videos vs audio? Thanks, Jim Duda --- This SF.Net email sponsored by: ApacheCon 2003, 16-19 November in Las Vegas. [Freevo-users] Re: MPlayer catches keypresses instead of slave mode?
I had the same problem. I ended up rebinding the mplayer keys using the mplayer input.conf file to match the freevo bindings. This ways, the keys always work the same regardless of whether or not a video is playing. Jim Pferdekaemper, Thorsten [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED]... Hi, I have come across a problem I could not track down yet. It seems like mplayer does not really run in slave mode when playing movies, bit it does when playing music. Normally when playing a movie with freevo, I could use the + and - keys on the numpad to increase or decrease the volume. Since a few days, I have to press * and / to do so. When playing music, + and - works fine. It just seems that (when playing movies) mplayer catches the keyboard commands directly instead of freevo catching them and sending the commands to mplayer. [Freevo-users] Re: Needing help with lirc
Vihtori, You're almost there. You indeed need to load /etc/freevo/lircrc. You need to map The keys which your remote provides, to those which freevo wants. For example, I Have ... Essential commands: #LEFT, RIGHT, UP, DOWN, SELECT, ENTER, EXIT, DISPLAY #Reccomended commands: #REC, REW, PLAY, FFWD, PAUSE, STOP, CH+, CH- #format of file is: begin prog = freevo button = select config = SELECT end begin prog = freevo button = up config = UP end I have one entry for each of the essential commands shown at the top. You can use the irw program to see exactly what commands you remote is providing. The next thing you can do is to tailor some of the commands in your local_conf.py. For example, I have in my local_conf.py: EVENTS['video']['REW'] = Event(SEEK, arg=-600) EVENTS['video']['FFWD'] = Event(SEEK, arg=+600) EVENTS['video']['LEFT'] = Event(SEEK, arg=-60) EVENTS['video']['RIGHT'] = Event(SEEK, arg=+60) EVENTS['video']['DOWN'] = Event(SEEK, arg=-10) EVENTS['video']['UP'] = Event(SEEK, arg=+10) Good Luck. By using the '-out' option also it allows you to capture ONLY the output from '-listxml' and dump it to a file. Then we can just read that file with the XML parser. [Freevo-users] Playing HDTV Recordings
I'm soon making the jump to high definition TV. I'm getting a 42 flat panel LCD soon; 1920x1080 resolution. I run freevo with a 2.4GHZ P4 in a shuttle PC form factor, diskless, feeding files from another linux NFS server. I recently upgraded the video card to a NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 which supports DVI and xvmc. I now run mplayer with -vo xvmc -vc ffmpeg12mc I also upgraded my recording server to a pchdtv 5500 card. I'm recording HDTV off the air into mpeg ts files. The mpeg TS files are huge, 2X+ the size of NTSC files recorded on a PVR3500 card. This is not surprising, to be expected. The mpeg ts files have a 1280x720 resolution, which I want to play on my 1920x1080 display. I'm stuggling to get these large HDTV mpeg ts streams to play smoothly on the 2.4GHZ P4 with NVIDIA FX 5200 using xvmc and ffpmeg12mc. Is this surprising? After researching and reading various posts, I expected my P4 to be able to play these files with xvmc. I struggling with severe A/V sync issues. I don't have my high definition monitor yet, I'm attempting to play these on an NTSC TV with TV out. Is this maybe more difficult to do? Some downscaling issue maybe? Playing these files consumes the entire CPU between mplayer and Xorg. Should I be transcoding these files to mpeg4 or x264? (I'm actually experimenting with that now). I'm interested in the transcoding option for 2 reasons; 1) to allow my P4 to play them, 2) to conserve on disk space. Does compressing the video files make my playback problems harder or easier? Can anyone offer advice on what I should be pursuing in order to play HDTV recordings on my fancy LCD display with freevo? Thanks, Jim - Using Tomcat but need to do more? Eric, I'm using the latest version 9746. I haven't tried any earlier versions. When playing 1280x720 content, my 2.4Ghz P4 is pegged with Xorg using 60% of the CPU and mplayer using 40% of the CPU. I know that xvmc is working, since I get the information from mplayer that it's using the nvidia drivers. I've checked to insure that AGP is configured properly. (/proc/driver/nvidia) I am trying to play these using TVout, I'm not sure if there is some processing going on to downscale to 800x600. I'm getting my flat screen in another week or so. I thought I did a good job researching my High Definition LCD purchase, now I'm not so sure. I purchased a Sharp Acquos LC-42D62U TV, which supports 1080p and 2 HDMI inputs. The TV is just amazing when watching the high def cable feeds. I'm struggling to get freevo working properly, I'm hoping someone can teach me what I need to know. In preparation, I purchased a Nvidia FX 5200 card with a DVI connector. I was under the impression this card was going to allow me to display 1920x1080 on my Sharp 1080p display. At least the Nvidia sales literature lends me to believe so. I'm using the binary nvidia driver on my FC5 linux machine. I have the cable box to 1 HDMI input (works fine). I have my freevo box to the 2nd HDMI input. The Sharp manual says It is necessary to set the PC format correctly to display XGA and WXGA signal. Why is the PC display different than what my cable settop box can do? I would think if the cable box can deliver 1920x1080, I should be able to get my computer to do so. What am I missing? The best I have been able to achieve is 1280x1024. If I configure the monitor in zoom mode, I can get a full screen freevo display, however, the videos from mplayer and xine are not full screen. What should I set geometry to in /etc/freevo/freevo.conf (1360x768 works best in zoom mode for some reason I don't understand)? What else should I need to change in local_conf.py ? I have this in my xorg.conf file: Section Monitor Identifier Monitor0 VendorName Sharp ModelName LC-42D62U Option dpms false Modeline[EMAIL PROTECTED] 182.28 1920 1952 2640 2672 1080 1102 1113 1135 Modeline[EMAIL PROTECTED] 84.50 1360 1392 1712 1744 768 783 791 807 EndSection Section Screen Identifier Screen AGP Device NV AGP MonitorMonitor0 DefaultDepth24 Option NvAGP 1 SubSection Display Depth 8 Modes 800x600 640x400 EndSubSection SubSection Display Depth 16 Modes 800x600 640x480 EndSubSection SubSection Display Depth 24 Modes 1920x1080 1360x768 1280x1024 EndSubSection EndSection I get this info from my xorg.log file: (II) Setting vga for screen 0. The recommendation was to include option nodpms in the xorg.conf file. This isn't working for me. The screen still goes dark, and now, xset -dpms has no affect. The only thing wich seems to work is to use: option dpms true and the xset -dpms when the screen goes black. Anyone have any pointers on how to resolve this? Jim - Take Surveys. Earn Cash. Re: [Freevo-users] LCD Monitor Setup Help
I just want to wrap up this thread with the final solution. After a week of investigation and learning, I found out that this Xorg message: (--) NVIDIA(0): SHARP HDMI (DFP-0): 135.0 MHz maximum pixel clock (--) NVIDIA(0): SHARP HDMI (DFP-0): Internal Single Link TMDS Actual describes the capabilities of the video card, not the monitor itself. I believe this is the monitor reporting the capabilities it sees from the video card (I'm guessing here). Later in the xorg.log file, I get this (but didn't report to the list): (--) NVIDIA(0): --- EDID for SHARP HDMI (DFP-0) --- (--) NVIDIA(0): EDID Version : 1.3 (--) NVIDIA(0): Manufacturer : SHP (--) NVIDIA(0): Monitor Name : SHARP HDMI (--) NVIDIA(0): Product ID : 4067 (--) NVIDIA(0): 32-bit Serial Number : 16843009 (--) NVIDIA(0): Serial Number String : (--) NVIDIA(0): Manufacture Date : 2006, week 0 (--) NVIDIA(0): DPMS Capabilities: Active Off (--) NVIDIA(0): Prefer first detailed timing : Yes (--) NVIDIA(0): Supports GTF : No (--) NVIDIA(0): Maximum Image Size : 820mm x 460mm (--) NVIDIA(0): Valid HSync Range: 15.0 kHz - 68.0 kHz (--) NVIDIA(0): Valid VRefresh Range : 55 Hz - 76 Hz (--) NVIDIA(0): EDID maximum pixel clock : 150.0 MHz Which states that the monitor can handle the pixel clock of 150 Mhz. Finally, I found this switch to add to the Monitor or Device section: Option ModeValidation NoMaxPClkCheck Which results in this: (II) NVIDIA(0): Mode Validation Overrides for SHARP HDMI (DFP-0): (II) NVIDIA(0): NoMaxPClkCheck (II) NVIDIA(0): Frequency information for SHARP HDMI (DFP-0): (II) NVIDIA(0): HorizSync : 15.000-68.000 kHz (II) NVIDIA(0): VertRefresh : 55.000-76.000 Hz (II) NVIDIA(0): (HorizSync from EDID) (II) NVIDIA(0): (VertRefresh from EDID) (II) NVIDIA(0): (II) NVIDIA(0): --- Building ModePool for SHARP HDMI (DFP-0) --- (II) NVIDIA(0): Validating Mode 1920x1080: (II) NVIDIA(0): 1920 x 1080 @ 60 Hz (II) NVIDIA(0): For use as DFP backend. [Freevo-users] Record and Play of MPEG Transport Streams
I'm reporting what I've learned, hoping to share what I have with others, hoping to get similiar experiences. I'm recording ATSC streams using a pcHDTV HD5500 card. The script I use for recording is at the bottom of this thread. This card dumps out MPEG2 transport streams. I have an NVIDIA FX 5200 AGP 8X card for playback. I'm using the NVIDIA binary drivers on linux. I'm trying to play back using a 2.4Ghz P4 with a 400 Mhz FSB, no hyper threading. The NVIDIA drivers support the xvmc MPEG2 acceleration features. When I attempt to play these MPEG Transport Streams using mplayer, both mplayer and Xorg consume 100% of the processor. The result is not at all acceptable. When I attempt to play these MPEG Transport Streams using xine, the video plays fine, the CPU usage is very low (20%), however, I don't get any audio. I then used the dvb-mpegtools ts2ps program to convert the transport streams to program streams. When I play the program stream with mplayer, I get the same results, the entire CPU is consumed. When I play the program stream with xine, I get audio and the CPU usage is still 20%. It's a workable solution. I don't know why mplayer has trouble with these streams while xine seems to be able to play the program stream properly. #!/bin/bash # 1: video device # 2: channel # 3: time in seconds # 4: recording file kill_it() { echo Caught SIGINT ... echo PID $SLEEP_PID kill $SLEEP_PID kill $CAT_PID kill $AZAP_PID exit } trap 'kill_it' INT TERM sleep 2 azap -r $2 /dev/null 21 AZAP_PID=$! cat $1 $4 CAT_PID=$! # $! is PID of last job running in background. sleep $3 SLEEP_PID=$! wait $SLEEP_PID # You should add some check here to make sure cat is still running, # otherwise you might accidentally kill some other process. kill $CAT_PID kill $AZAP_PID Jim - Take Surveys. Re: [Freevo-users] Card to hdtv - NVIDIA FX5200 works
I'm using an NVIDIA FX-5200 AGP with a heatsink (fanless). This card has a DVI out. I drive my Sharp 42 1080p monitor using a DVI to HDMI cable. It took me a while to get the correct X configuration to work, but I found the proper one for 1080p. I'm using the NVIDIA binary driver from NVIDIA. I can play all ATSC 1920x1080 content on my 2.4 Ghz P4 without hyper-threading. Using Xine with xvmc, this card works fine and consumes 40% of the CPU. Using mplayer with xvmc, this card fails to work as it consumes 100% of the CPU. I think there is still some issue with mplayer and the NVIDIA binary driver. XVMC is a must for the NVIDIA. This card cost me $35. I record ATSC off the air using an HD-5500. [Freevo-users] Bug in XMLTV Listings?
I think there is a bug/memory leak in maybe XMLTV listings or Scheduled Records. I'm having trouble pinning it down, as it's not consistent. It's not the remote, cuz the remotes for the two different machines behave the same way on each machine. One machine works, the other doesn't, regardless of the remote. It's not the software, cuz both machines use the exact same code on the exact same NFS mounted file systems. I think it must be the DVD drive. Is that possible? Could the DVD drive cause a difference disallowing the RIGHT key from working on some DVDs? Tnanks for any advice. [Freevo-users] Plugin Questions - 1.7.5
I've upgraded to 1.7.5. Thanks for all the new features and great work everyone!! I'm trying to use the new vpodcast and apodcast features. The audio podcasts download and play fine. Is there supposed to be a menu subitem to allow deletion of the podcast? I cannot get the vpodcasts to play. To start with, I simply used the example configuration found in the plugin documentation. I can see the items to play (example, various utube items), however, when I use the SELECT button, nothing happens. Should I expect the video to play? What is needed beyond xine and mplayer? Finally, I've installed screensaver: plugin.activate('screensaver.balls') However, no screen save activates. Do I need to install something else like pygoom or something like that? Duncan, I'll give the debug method a try tonight (I'm at work right now). Last night, I did make some progress. 1) I installed kaa.metadata 0.7.1 2) I added .flv to the MPLAYER_SUFFIX list in local_conf.py I'm not sure which helped (if not both). Now what happens is the flv files do download and get stored. Mplayer now plays the audio, but not video for flv files. I'm using the later version of mplayer available in fedora 7 repo. For mplayer, I need to force -vo xxmc and -vc ffmpeg12 to play my HD recordings. I think I now need to rethink how I have this setup (in local_conf.py) to allow mplayer to play flv files now as well as HD mpeg files (I'm guessing at this point). I'm sure I can figure this out now. Is there a method for deleting the podcasts other than going into the file system and manually deleting them? I'm really exciting about the podcast feature ... Re: [Freevo-users] Plugin Questions - 1.7.5
Well, I can get the video podcasts to play, however, I need to remove the xvmc option from MPLAYER_VO_DEV in order to get them to play, they will only play with xv (which makes sense). my local_conf.py has: if CONF.display == 'x11': MPLAYER_VO_DEV = 'xvmc,xv,sdl,x11' # X11 drivers in order of else: MPLAYER_VO_DEV = CONF.display # e.g.: x11,mga,fbdev, see mplayer MPLAYER_ARGS = { 'dvd': '-cache 8192', 'mpg': '-cache 5000 -vc ffmpeg12mc' I add -vc ffmpeg12mc for mpg files, all the mpg files are my HD content (MPEG2). I need both xvmc and ffmpeg12mc for mpg files to play, but xvmc doesn't work for flv files. I do see that in mplayer.py, there is code to handle xvmc and ffmpeg12mc options, however, I'm not able to figure out how to get set_vcodec to activate. from mplayer.py set_vcodec = False if item['xvmc'] and item['type'][:6] in ['MPEG-1','MPEG-2','MPEG-T']: set_vcodec = True # Mplayer command and standard arguments if set_vcodec: if item['deinterlace']: bobdeint='bobdeint' else: bobdeint='nobobdeint' command += ['-vo', 'xvmc:%s' % bobdeint, '-vc','ffmpeg12mc'] else: command += ['-vo',config.MPLAYER_VO_DEV + config.MPLAYER_VO_DEV_OPTS] If I could figure out how to get mplayer.py to set_vcodec, then I could remove xvmc from MPLAYER_VO_DEV to get both to work. Re: [Freevo-users] Plugin Questions - 1.7.5
Duncan, I think what you are looking for is the correct MPLAYER_ARGS in local_conf.py. It is the file extension that is used so you can set specific options for particular file types. HTH Duncan Yes in essence. Unfortunately, the MPLAYER_ARGS array cannot be used to overload the MPLAYER_VO_DEV switch (at least that is my understanding from attempting to read the code). If mplayer runs with -VO xvmc,vo, then it doesn't play flv files properly. I don't have a workable solution. My MPLAYER_VO_DEV must have xvmc,vo, (for HD mpeg2 files) however, that breaks flv file play. Does that make sense? Re: [Freevo-users] Plugin Questions - 1.7.5
Duncan, That's correct it can't but MPlayer uses the first -vo setting and IIRC the MPLAYER_ARGS comes first so it should use these settings. I learned that MPLAYER_ARGS comes second to the normal -vo option and the first -vo xv is used by MPLAYER which prevents the mpg from playing properly. Example: ps ax /usr/bin/mplayer -slave -ac hwdts,hwac3,a52, -autosync 100 -nolirc -autoq 100 -screenw 1920 -screenh 1080 -fs -ao alsa:device=spdif -vo xv,sdl,x11 -cache 5000 -vo xmvc - I'm going to muck around with mplayer.py and see if I can maybe switch them around. [Freevo-users] Anyone Using intel GMA 3100 for xvmc and HDTV ?
I'm thinking about upgrading my Shuttle XPC Media Player from an SB51 to the latest SG33G5B. With the SB51, I run with a single core 2.4G Intel P4, no hyperthreading. For video, I'm using Nvidia FX6200. All in all it works quite well, albeit I have occasional video stutter when playing HDTV content with xvmc using both mplayer and xine. I'm only using 45-50 % of the CPU whenever playing HDTV with xine or mplayer. So, I don't think I have a processor bandwidth issue. The video stutter is rather annoying, but I deal with it. The SG33G5B comes with an integrated Intel GMA 3100 graphics engine which an HDMI port. Can anyone confirm if the GMA 3100 works well with Xorg, xvmc, mplayer, and xine? Any issues? The SG33G5B also comes with Realtek ALC888DD audio, which I want to use the digital SPDIF output. Can anyone confirm if this audio chipset works well with alsa, spdif, mplayer and xine? Re: [Freevo-users] Anyone Using intel GMA 3100 for xvmc and HDTV ?
Christian, The HDMI port is digital, so, in theory provides a better signal, your mileage may vary. It appear though that you at least have the the Xorg drivers working with the 3100? Do you simply use the XV driver? Have you tried the XVMC driver too? Are you using the Digital Audio SPDIF port? I put a Core2Duo 6600 in it and I can play full 1080p content just fine via HDMI. It really only slows on *very* high bitrate content, such as direct from a Bluray/HD-DVD. If I had my time back, I probably would have bought a slightly faster CPU. There is work being done to greatly speed up video acceleration on these chips (The plan is actually to go much further than Nvidia/ATI in this regard), but I have found the performance more than acceptable as-is, since it has no trouble pushing 1920x1080 pixels. The SG33G5B also comes with Realtek ALC888DD audio, which I want to use the digital SPDIF output. Can anyone confirm if this audio chipset works well with alsa, spdif, mplayer and xine? At least that's what I assume is happening.. I insert my drive and I can now choose USB Disk from the menus, but when I do choose it I get Directory does not exist or something similar. The thing I find odd is that the disk mounts just fine in Gnome. No problem what-so-ever. It mounts and plays media files in the underlying Gnome that Freevo runs on top of just fine. Re: [Freevo-users] xxmc
Chris, Here is what I know. I'm running freevo 1.8.0; the latest versions of xine and mplayer for fedora 8. I'm using the proprietary NVIDIA drivers for my FX-6200 nvidia card, which uses xvmc for high definition video. For older version of freevo and xine, I used to have to use -V xxmc for xine, however, for the latest versions, I simply use auto and xine appears to figure it out. The auto must be working, as I can play high definition mpegs without any issue, and it certainly wouldn't play if xine were not using either xxmv or xvmc. I haven't checked in a while, but IIRC, the last time I checked xine was uisng xvmc and not xxmc. This was a change since I upgraded from fedora 7 to fedora 8, so, xine had some changes/improvements. The only time I have to check to see what it's doing is when the videos don't play :-) My local_conf.py has this: XINE_VO_DEV = 'auto' XINE_ARGS_DEF = --config /home/lroom/.xine/config --aspect-ratio auto --no-lirc For mplayer, I need to use xvmc for high definintion content. I control the vo switch using MPLAYER_ARGS in local_conf.py MPLAYER_ARGS = { 'dvd': '-cache 8192 -vo xvmc -vc ffmpeg12mc', 'mpeg' : '-cache 5000 -vo xvmc -vc ffmpeg12mc -ao alsa:device=iec958', 'mpg': '-cache 1 -vo xvmc -vc ffmpeg12mc -ao alsa:device=iec958', 'ts' : '-cache 5000 -vo xvmc -vc ffmpeg12mc -ao alsa:device=iec958', The latest versions of mplayer that come with fedora 8 are incredible for playing high definition mpegs. The earlier versions used to occassionally stutter, but all of those issues are gone now. The mplayer playback is no different than a live feed (from what I can see) when using xvmc. Jim Chris Thomas [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote in message news:[EMAIL PROTECTED] What is the correct setting to get Freevo to use xxmc? Can anyone recommend a working fanless AGP video card which supports Xvmc on Fedora 9? I wish I never upgraded ... I recall some effort underway to address this as a stopgap until VAAPI ascends from vaporware status, but I don't believe has approached something resembling a usable state yet. So, on Linux, for the time being, we are left compensating for this lack of capability by buying beefier CPUs (and further waiting for libavcodec to support frame threading). Jason. [Freevo-users] $HOME for /usr/bin/freevo start ?
I run freevo on different diskless computer machines in my house. I use a modified version of the LTSP scripts for bootstrap from a tftp server. I have to modify the scripts to keep LTSP4.2 compatible with newer versions of fedora. I've tried numerous ways to boot freevo automatically, all of which I get to work somehow, but most are usually hacks. My distro is basically fedora 9 which boots from a central server. The easiest method I've found is to run freevo as root (right or wrong) and start freevo as a server from rc.d/init.d Recently, I inadvertently deleted my freevo filesystem, and lost my backups, losing all my scripts. I've recovered most of my scripts, and repaired my backup processes :-) One thing I haven't restored is my method for automatically starting freevo as a service. For the life of me, I cannot recall how I hacked it to work. I cannot explain some behaviour, I'm hoping someone can shed some light. I want to run freevo as root, however, use an alternate HOME directory (not /root). In my service script, I set HOME before I launch freevo. In a nut-shell I have: #!/bin/bash setenv HOME=/home/'hostname' /usr/bin/freevo start I am expecting that freevo runs with the new HOME directory, but as user root. I believe this is happening, because the log files indicate freevo is finding its local_conf.py in the proper place of /home/(host name)/.freevo/local_conf.py So far, so good. What doesn't happen is when freevo spaws off mplayer. In this situation, mplayer is running with a HOME of /root, not /home/(hostname). I know this because I need to have a proper .asroundrc in /root for my audio to work. I am expecting mplayer to look for .asoundrc in /home/(host name)/.asoundrc. But, I've determined mlayer is using /root/.asoundrc Can anyone explain why mplayer is using a different $HOME than freevo? Re: [Freevo-users] $HOME for /usr/bin/freevo start ?
I used Duncan's suggestion of defining a site-wide asound.conf. Each of my freevo boxes has it's own configuration I created a soft link from /etc/asound.conf to /tmp/asound.conf Each freevo node has a unique /tmp directory. During startup, I copy the proper .asoundrc to /tmp/asound.conf This works fine. I have reverted back to running freevo as root. I couldn't get freevo to run as a normal user, and have mplayer fetch .asoundrc via $HOME. Very odd, must be something with my LTSP setup. Michael Brown wrote: I'm curious about your LTSP set-up. How many freevo terminals do you have, and are they similar in hardware configuration, or different? How do you find it as far as maintenance goes? How fast do the terminals boot up? I have 3 different terminals. Boot takes maybe 15 seconds (or less) before freevo starts. Each has a different hardware configuration. Mainly different video and audio hardware. The maintenance isn't too bad. I use yum for software updates, I only have to update one file system. I can either do the updates on the server using yum --installroot=, or, telnet to one of the freevo boxes and run yum update as root. In my set-up, I have a central server running Debian which functions as a Freevo web record server, Samba file print server, IMAP mail, Misterhouse home automation, etc., which is the hub of my set-up. It presently tftp boots the MediaMVP, and serves up the content to it and two other Freevo boxes which have identical motherboards, but vary in remotes and other hardware. They started life as Ubuntu 6 boxes, and have been frankensteined with upgrades from both Ubuntu 7 and Freevo Debian packages and their dependencies. Needless to say, they're getting to be a lot of work to maintain, and I've been thinking about an LTSP or other net-booted disk image ideas. Me too. To get there sometime in the future, I started by having a 'freevo' user on each box, with the same UID/GID. My two Freevo frontends mount the freevo home directory, which has a ~/.freevo directory, which contains just the cache at the moment. So, the cache gets shared between the three machines (main/record server which hosts /home, and the two frontends). Eventually, I want to have one local_conf.py in the freevo home, and have it include the appropriate /etc/freevo/local_conf.py which would contain the machine-specific configuration items. I configure each of my freevo boxes using a different $HOME. The $HOME is defined by the hostname (livingroom, bedroom, gym). My freevo service scripts sets $HOME before starting freevo, freevo finds the proper local_conf.py So, each freevo box has a different $HOME/.freevo/local_conf.py, which allows for unique configuration. The services loaded on each box is controlled by /etc/lts.conf. lts.conf allows me to start different services and load different modules as necessary. I've found that LTSP isn't friendly with the new upstart methodology found in fedora 9 and beyond, which requires me to massage the LTS rc scripts. For some reason, $HOME doesn't propagate to mplayer, mplayer doesn't fetch $HOME/.asoundrc This issue started this thread. In the mean time, one AMD 3500 box boots off a SATA2 7200rpm disk (boots to Freevo menu in about 45 seconds), and the other in the bedroom boots off a slw Kingston 4GB flash drive in about 2 minutes. They're functional enough, but it's getting to be a pain to maintain them.
