Re: [Audyssey] Public betas vs private testing

2010-01-04 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi David,

yes, that sounds like very intensive beta testing and although testing for
games can sometimes be difficult, it does not sound as though it reaches
quite up to that level. In any case, I usually discuss with the people that
test for me whether or not they should get a free copy depending on how much
time they are going to spend on it etc. If they are only giving the game a
few test runs and giving some spontaneous feedback then they will usually
not receive a free copy, though again it depends entirely on how much time
and dedication that they put in. I would, however, give a free copy to
anyone who tests the software every day for 6 months. Smile.

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

Hello,

The business, productivity, and AT programs which I have alpha and beta
tested were typically in the multi-hundred to few thousand dollar range.
For these products, beta testing has always been quite intensive;
usually lasting at least six months and requiring considerable time
commitments. In many cases, we use the solution on our business machines
to give it real-world challenges. Whenever bugs crop up, we file
detailed reports on how to specifically reproduce the bugs. When bugs
are intermittent, we dig for them while still using the software
normally. In other words, one of the things we do is try to crash the
programs and report exactly on how we caused the crashes.

I have done this through a private business, while working for a
university, and as a private consumer. In all cases, this is what
private alpha and beta testing consists of, and the developers always
get their money's worth for the software. If we charged, it would cost
significantly more for the service (the company which trained me now
only alpha and beta tests for large corporations and charges for their
services). It was in the late 90's when I worked with them and was
taught. I never became as intense as they are, but I always use the
principles they taught me.

Philip Bennefall wrote:

Hi David and Dark,

I also think that the final price of the product has an impact on this
decision. What you are essentially doing is paying the beta testers
for their work, and so let's say that the game will sell for 25 or 30
dollars then that's probably a reasonable amount to give in return for
testing which in turn would most certainly warrent a free copy. If,
however, the game or product sells for $150 then I would argue that a
free copy is too much payment in most cases. If the testers spend a
year running the program over and over again then it probably is not,
but in most cases I'd say that it is and then a price reduction would
be in order instead.

In short, one has to decide what one as a developer considers to be a
reasonable amount to pay for testing and if this covers the cost of
the game, give it out for free and if it does not cover it, give a
reduction.

Kind regards,

No problem David.

Like everything else, it's up to the developer, I was just pointing
out that
it was not a necessary condition of private testing that the
developer has
to give away 5 or 10 coppies of the game for free.

It does seem reasonable with business software and the like, ---
sinse A,

the markit can stand it and B, the testing process itself wouldn't
necessarily be enjoyable to the tester.

Beware the grue!

I found out that the Anna voice is also part of

So anyone with XP can get the Anna voice by buying this program.
However I don't know if the program is accessible.

well, the only thing is it is so much softer than all the others I ever had.

Re: [Audyssey] The beta team

2010-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Claudio,
Well, as a game developer and someone who has run my own private beta
teams I have to say there is a lot more to the selection process than
you may realize. When a developer such as myself puts out a request
looking for beta testers it is easy to get back several applications for
the position, but only 10 to 12 out of those applications will actually
be selected for the team. Therefore my job as the lead developer and
beta tester is to somehow select 10 to 12 people out of 40, 50, or 60
applications for the position. The only way to do that is by looking for
specific skills and qualities that would make a good beta tester in my
opinion. I have to do that, because not everyone who applies for a
testing position is exactly qualified for the position he/she wants.
Just like any employer I pick and choose based on certain criteria which
i feel would best be suited for the job. Here is a few that I personally
look for.
The applicant's language skills. When testing it is important for the
tester to be able to clearly state his/her opinions, problem with the
product, and be able to communicate effectively with the other beta
testers. Since communication on a test team is vitally important I'm
likely to reject an application if the applicant makes consistent
grammatical and spelling errors, and the message is difficult to read.
Previous experience testing software. Just like any employer I tend to
look for references and prier experience testing software. It is nice
for me to be able to ask developer x if he/she has had such and such an
applicant as a beta tester, and how well he/she did while testing. A
good reference from developer x goes a long way towards getting on my
beta team, and a bad reference will put the applicant at the bottom of
the list. So references are just another way for me to sort out the
potential applicants.
The applicant's hardware/software. Not only does a potential tester have
to meet certain criteria his/her computer also may have to meet specific
criteria for testing. Given the number of types of computers out there,
different operating systems, processors, etc it is vitally important
that a developer try and gather information on as many different
computers and configurations as humanly possible during the early
testing period. Now, that USA Games is now going forward with a
cross-platform design initiative it will be more important than ever to
include a little bit of everything in the testing process. Generally, it
would be a good idea to have at least one representative for each
platform targeted such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OS,
and Linux. A team consisting of 12 users all running the same operating
system would obviously be too narrow a target group, and so I may decide
to reject someone on the grounds I already have the maximum number of
testers for a specific target group.
The applicant's reputation. As a developer I often look at the
applicant's reputation or character for possible membership on one of my
test teams. I wouldn't want a known software pirate for obvious reasons,
and someone who is frequently disruptive on list wouldn't exactly be a
good choice either. So a person's reputation will definitely be factored
into my decision for beta testing.
The applicant's technical skills. As a beta tester I expect an applicant
to be able to perform basic computer operations such as adding and
removing software from his/her computer, being able to install required
dependencies on his/her own, be able to trouble shoot problems that
arise during testing, and to do all of this with little to no
documentation. The object of selecting a test team is to test the
software, run it through various test situations, etc and the developer
is not there to hold someone's hand and walk them through basic skills
like installing software, removing software, deleting files, downloading
software from the internet, whatever. Therefore some basic computer
skills are absolutely essential for a beta tester.
For example, currently I'm working on porting Mysteries of the Ancients
to C++ and have already cross compiled a version for the Linux OS.
Before it goes public I'll be forming a test team to test the Linux port
of the game. I'd expect a tester using a Debian based Linux to be
familiar with the Linux operating system as well as package add/remove
tools such as dpkg and apt-get. Similarly a Red Hat based Linux user
would be familiar with his/her Linux operating system as well as package
add/remove tools like rpm and yum. The Linux user would have to be
familiar with the Gnome desktop environment, and have basic skills using
a screen reader like Orca. I'm not going to pick a Linux tester that
doesn't have at least these technical skills for the position.
As far as responding to each and every applicant sometimes that isn't
feasible. When I announced beta testing positions for Mysteries of the
Ancients I

Re: [Audyssey] Public betas vs private testing

2010-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
Yes, in deed. It is a rather unusual situation, and one I doubt another
game developer will find themselves in. The problem began long before I
got on the seen with Alchemy offering certain games with certain
features, making and breaking promises, and something I should have left
well alone. However, like many others here I had money wrapped up in
Raceway and Montezuma's Revenge so felt I had the right to the source
code so I could finish and sell the games myself. Plus I didn't want to
see anyone get screwed over Alchemy pulling out like that and keeping
the money for the preorders. So no matter how you cut it it was a bad
situation from the start.
I believe once I get Raceway and MOTA done things will get allot better
for everyone. For one thing any games I work on will be my own, I won't
be taking preorders for them, and I don't even have to announce their
existence until I'm ready too. That allows me to design a game
relatively in secret, and only when it is ready to be tested will I make
the project known to the public at large. That allows me some breathing
room to do things on my own time and in my own way.

dark wrote:
I see the truth of all that Tom, however as you said yourself, i don't
think Mota is a particularly typical testing process at all for games.

Even apart from the pretty major money issue you mention, there was
the fact that the original alchemy game had features x y z, that you
then produced your own game which got shot down by the evil lawyers of
doom, and now we're onto a third project under the same banner but
essentially a different game.

When i think of all the Monti and mota versions i've played, features
have gone in and out like nobody's business due to all these changes.

I think if Monti had just been firmly and squarely released as it
should have been, all these shinanigans would've sorted themselves out.

Hopefully any games Philip, yourself, or indeed anybody else developes
in future will be free of all these swings and roundabouts.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] Public betas vs private testing

2010-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark,
That's my entire point though. In order for me to test the entire game I
have to give away a full unlocked copy to someone that way the final
game level which is different from the first gets fully tested as well
as all the levels in between. That's why I made the point that a
developer really could use a private team for testing the full/unlocked
copy where the public team gets only a demo for general testing on a
larger range of systems and platforms.

dark wrote:

Hi tom.

I wasn't in anyway suggesting giving away public copies of the game.
As has already been said, public copies should be restricted to demo
content only, and for the purposes of testing the general running and
mechanics of the game.

If you've got a game which employs vastly different enemies and
mechanics throughout, so that the last level is vastly different to
the first, then indeed private testing does make sense as you
will need people to play the private version.

there are stil other options than giving away free coppies though such

Essentially it just depends upon how complete your private beta is.

Re: [Audyssey] Netbooks and games

2010-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Trouble,
Thanks for the corrections. I don't actually own a Mac myself although I
have used them a few times at my relatives' house. So I do appreciate
the updated information.
However, my main point was to point out that just because someone
invests in a Mac or Linux PC it isn't the end of the world for Windows
applications. There are ways of getting around that problem like running
Windows via Boot Camp, using VM Ware, creating a multiboot, whatever.
I've even managed to get some accessible games going under wine, but it
is a massive pain in the rear to get working since you have to copy,
cut, and paste a lot of dependencies into wine from Windows XP.
Some games are easier to get working under emulation than others. Some
games like Q9 and Kringle Crash would be easier to get running under
wine just because it is written in C++ and basically requires DirectX 8
which can easily be setup under wine. Jim Kitchens games on the other
hand require DirectX 8, Sapi 5, Visual Basic 6, and all the dependencies
they depend on which becomes a mess of libraries and files to install to
get it working. Equally bad are Che's .NET based games for roughly the
same reasons. Too many dependencies requiring too many other
dependencies to resolve realistically for emulation. So running games
via wine is pretty hit and miss, but it can be done in some cases.

Trouble wrote:

Just to clear a few things up.
With boot camp your second op is not running in virtual mode. It is
running under full system resources. So on the new mac's it would be
like a regular pc.
Now if you want the best of both worlds and ops. You can run them
together with the second op in the virtual world with either fusion or
virtual box. That lets them run side by side sharing resources.
Now we also have a third option with peroral for mac. it lets you
install and run the pc software under the mac op. The only bust here
is not all software will run that way but a lot will.
With this new mac op you can even install it on a pc. They call them
hackintoshes.

Hi,
For some reason the volume for Microsoft Anna is typically pretty low,
but you can raise the volume somewhat by adjusting it in the control

Hi Munawar,
Oh, the Sapi speech settings are still in Windows 7, but are located in

just takes poking around and finding where they put everything in the

Just tested winfrotz TTS on my windows 7 work machine, and it seems
alright,
along with the new MS Anna voice, so while still haven't figured out how
come it won't work on my windows XP machines, no matter what I try, it
does
seem to work on my windows 7 machine.

Stay well

Hi,
For some reason the volume for Microsoft Anna is typically pretty low,
but you can raise the volume somewhat by adjusting it in the control
panel. If you go into the control panel and go to the speech settings in
that dialog there is an option for adjusting the audio output for Anna.
Press enter on the audio output button and tab to the volume button,
press enter, and crank the volume up to the max. Sorry, I don't have
Windows 7 sitting right in front of me at the moment so I can't give you
step by step details right now, but if you still need more help when I
get on my laptop I'll write up more detailed step by step instructions
if you need them.

Re: [Audyssey] Core Exiles Woes: Combo Boxes

2010-01-04 Thread shaun everiss
use alt down arrow to get at the boxes.
the first box is only good if you want to log out, read docs, enter markets.
etc
the second box is only good if you are on a mission or need to get access to
the location program.
I suggest you join a guild you get bonuses.
but may have to contribute stuff alter on.
I am with intelliquest

pronounced interleqest by most readers
but communications and emails and osme listings are put as intelli quest so
whatever.
I suggest you go to senfaren, I think and get the gild offices there I think,
forgot havn't been there for ages.
I know the office is in the feren system or is that the gbm?

There are probably others that can tell you where.
I also suggest you follow the message about getting the extra 20 k sign up in
the forums and post to the hellow thread a greeting.
after that well I haven't bothered.
Right now I am stuck in a bit of a bother.
I have enough cash thanks to the guild, for christmas and such.
I can buy a bigger gun and get back in combat.
In fact I can get most weapons.
I am unfortunately level 17 not higher so I can only get a level17 weapon.
Right now with my scanner basic sensor I have 300 units of power left.
the lowest I found was 383 units of power.
I am trying to find something I can use.

On that note, how do you sell your oar you have extracted?
I have some inert gas and some reactive gas.
its currently been in storage for a few months.
I need to know how to sell the stuff.
How do I do it on the gbm?
I get it, talk to the npc on sangalen but then what?
there is a big list of items on the screen no where to list anything new.
On that note though if something is in storage can I enter it on a player
market?
I know tagons tribute has storage for this extracted stuff but how do I enter
that on the player market.
I'd like to make cash more cash than I am right now.

Oh and don't be fulled.
you should be able to get the cash to continue a ways but eventually you will
need to get biger things.

Re: [Audyssey] successful downloading

2010-01-04 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Shirley,
Ah, I see. What you are suppose to do with the Draconis games is save
them to your computer, like your Documents directory, and then run the
setup file from there. So if you get a dialog to run, save, or cancel
the game press enter on save rather than run or cancel. I think this is
just a simple case of doing the wrong thing when prompted by your
computer. So next time instead of trying to do run try saving the games
to your computer first. Remember Draconis's games are very big so it
could take a long time to save them.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] successful downloading

2010-01-04 Thread dark

hi Shirly.

It's simple. either select save if you want to keep the setup file (I
recommend doing this), or select run. The file will then download,
which might take a while (some of draconis' games are bigger than jims).
Then, once downloaded, an install wizard will start up, asking you where you
want the games installed, just keep running through the next button to
have them installed in the default location (which should be fine).

Hth.

Beware the grue!

[Audyssey] Sudoku for newbies, possibly dummies

2010-01-04 Thread Scott Chesworth
Hi all,

I have a procrastination gap to fill while I'm on the road this week.
Fancied trying my hand at Sudoku. Can anyone recommend a good
accessible game to get me started?

SudoSan seemed promising, but upon visiting the audiogames.net/sudosan
URL and launching the game, I get the intro played but can't seem to
get any of the shortcuts listed to work. It's as if the game doesn't
see that I'm pressing n for a new puzzle or d for difficulty etc, it
just sits there and plays japanese music at me. Pretty cool authentic
music I should add, so it's not all bad.

Thanks in advance...
Scott

Hi,
I'm not talking about Windows Narrator. Windows Narrator is a cheap
screen reader for Windows 7 that ships with the OS. What I'm talking
about is the settings for Sapi 5 in the control panel. There is a
difference.

Re: [Audyssey] The beta team

2010-01-04 Thread Liam Erven
I take a lot of flack for this, but I pick people that I know well for
the simple reason that i am familiar with them, and I know they'll do
what I need them to. I know it's probably not fair, but it's how I
like to work, and it's what works best for me. to each his own.

On 1/4/10, Thomas Ward thomasward1...@gmail.com wrote:
 Hi Claudio,
Well, as a game developer and someone who has run my own private beta
teams I have to say there is a lot more to the selection process than
you may realize.
The Linux user would have to be
 familiar with the Gnome

[Audyssey] Need an American Teenager or Student who is a Blind or VI Gamer

2010-01-04 Thread John Bannick

Audyssey Folks,

We just got the following request for an American teenaged or student
gamer who is blind or visually impaired.

Voice of America Urdu TV needs to interview a visually impaired
teenager or student about what types of games he or she plays.
Patrick Timony from MLK Library in D.C. suggested that you might be
able to help us locate someone in the D.C. area for the interview.
This is a brief television interview for our Hello America segment
in which Pakistanis pose questions to Americans about daily life,
culture, etc. We need to do the interview in the next week or two,
but it can be done at the location of the interviewee's convenience.
Please let me know if you can put me in contact with someone.

I don't know if the person must be in the DC area or if the interview
could be by phone.

If anyone wants their 15 minutes of fame, this would be an excellent
opportunity.

(No, Thomas, Jim, and some of youse other guys. I know you aren't kids,
at least in years, smile.)

(And I know that Dark is English.)

Anyway, if anyone is interested, drop a post here and I'll connect you
to the TV person.

I'd be more than happy to do the interview if it didn't involve a

Voice of America Urdu TV needs to interview a visually impaired

Anyway, if anyone is interested, drop a post here and I'll connect you
 to the TV person.

Hi all,

This one's for Jim and anyone else who might use VB6. I recently started
looking at programming in VB6, and have looked at packaging and deploying
applications. I have, for a test, attemted to deploy the number guess
program on Jim's site. I get it pachaged, but I can't figure out how to
deploy the thing. How do you do that?

Hi,
Inno Setup is definitely the way to go. It's very easy to use (and
free), and you can use Pascal for any additional scripting your setup
may need. For a guess the number game, Inno's basic features should do

Rather than pressing enter on run, choose the save option. Be sure to
notice where the file will be saved to. I would never, under any

but this is a good way to get a virus. Also, if I am right, you cannot
remove the installed program after doing it this way. If I'm wrong on all

Well Thomas, if Draconus' games were like Jim's, then I could download them.
When I press enter on download I get, cancel, save and run. I press run and
all I get is, close this page when downloading is done I press enter and
nothing happens. So, if Draconus' games were like Jim's I'd be so happy!!
That's the best I can do for explaining.
Cheers!

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] The beta team

Hi Claudio,
Well, as a game developer and someone who has run my own private beta
teams I have to say there is a lot more to the selection process than
you may realize.

Re: [Audyssey] successful downloading

2010-01-04 Thread David Chittenden

Hello,

It is almost always better to save rather than run from a web page. This
can help with viruses if your antivirus package automatically scans all
files which have been downloaded. Whether or not your antivirus does
this, it is a good habbit to train yourself to do. The reason is because
it is too easy to click on things and infect your system when you are
not automatically practicing safe internet procedures.

As to removing installed programs, all of the same factors apply. The
only difference is that Microsoft automates the process of downloading
and starting the install procedure for you. The file is automatically
downloaded to the temporary internet files folder.

Re: [Audyssey] successful downloading

2010-01-04 Thread dark
Actually charles, you can uninstall fine because the uninstall files are
usually just put in the games' folder separately from the setup files,
or the games' already been written to the registry so you can just use
add/remove programs.

I keep most things on a backup external drive, and when I was installing
games onto my laptop, I just installed them streight from the setup files on
the drive because (unlike on my desktop), I don't have the drive space to
hang on to all the setup files.

I tend to generally save files as a matter of course so that I can always
install the program again after a crash, or install it on another machine,
unless their things like program update patches, in which case I just run
them directly.

As to viruses, I've never had anything nasty happen when directly running
files, and the times Avg has interfered (as with night of parasite), it also
complained when I downloaded the file.

sinse running essentially does the same thing as downloading and
saving, accept that instead of saving the file in a location of your
choice then running it, it's saved, then run from the temp directory which
gets deleated every so often, i'm afraid i don't see the security difference
myself whatever internet explorer may say.
