Re: [Audyssey] Happy Star Wars Day

Well, as I've had to deal with that question a lot, and as I'm a
bonafide nerd, I think Shawn pointed it out pretty well.
However, Star Wars has a few more differences, and I don't mean tech
ones either, although there're a plenty of those.
Star Trek is more closely based on scientific discovery and
possibilities, whereas Star Wars is more based around principals of
action and adventure.
Literarily speaking, I'd say that Star Trek is more about a broader
universe and how it effects individuals whereas Star Wars takes the
other side, how individuals effect a broader universe.
Star Wars is a series of seven movies, one animated and the rest live
action, as well as an animated TV show, series of comics, and mass of
books. Honestly, this differs only somewhat from Star Trek: eleven
movies, none animated, five shows, although one series features
animated episodes in addition to the live-action ones, and Star Trek
also has a vast number of books associated with it. Both are rather
large phenomena, so looking them up couldn't hurt anyone who doesn't
know about them.

Hope this hasn't been too pedantic.

Re: [Audyssey] Happy Star Wars Day

2011-05-05 Thread dark

Hi Dekota.

Technically i've heard startrek described as science fiction, ie, posible
scientific principles and ideas of the future, where as starwars described
as science fantasy, ie, magic, technology which serves a literary basis etc.

not to say either is superior (in fact, i've read quite a bit of early
science fiction which is so! predictive it becomes down right boring), just
that that is a crytical difference in approache.

Re: [Audyssey] Happy Star Wars Day

2011-05-05 Thread dark
Hmmm Alfredo, that's a rather odd question, it's sort of like asking what
the difference is betwene an oak tree and a palm tree? other than both
being trees, they don't really have too much in common, and the same is true
here.

Both are scifi but don't have that much in common either.

Star trek began in the 1960's (1966 I think), and began with the startrek tv
series which ran for five years, and was then followed by a number of other
tv series and films set in the same universe.

Startrek desplays a future society in the 23rd and 24th centuries, when
humans have expanded to colonize many planets and form a federation in
cooperation with a number of other races.
Episodes usually follow the events aboard a military star ship (or in the
case of ds9 a space station), and concern the interactions of the crew with
various alien races and strange space events.

the scientific principles in startrek are also at least self consistant and
logical, and in many places based on real ideas and forms of speculation
about future technology, space flight etc.

Startrek often features a very positive view of the future, where humanity
has gone beyond class, race prejudice and lots of other bad things,
though while early series very much focused on moral lessons, later series
like ds9 do show quite a bit of conflict, drama and intreague.

Starwars on the other hand is better thought of as science fantasy than
scence fiction, sinse the science very much takes a back seat, not that
that really matters over much.

it is primarily based on originally 3 films in the 1970's and early 80's,
with three more (the prequal treology), being bought out in the early 2000s,
as well as many novels and other materials like spin off series.

Starwars does not display a future society, but a society aa long time ago
in a galaxy far far away

ie, somewhere else.

Rather than being based on a set showing of a future for humanity, starwars
involves a struggle in a specific area of space, particularly surrounding
the semi-magical, semi-religious powers of the Jedi order, and the rise and
fall of the evil empire.

Starwars therefore watches more like a rolocking good fantasy novel in space
really, and can be enjoyed for it's style, likeable characters and intensive
political action rather than for it's set scientific ideas.

Other than both being sf, both hae space ships, starwars and startrek are
radically different really and not too easy to confuse once you've
experienced them (I'm actually surprised you can ask this question int he
first place).

Some people are larger fans than others. I for instance have watched all the
starwars films and much of startrek (I own some of my favourite series on
dvd), but haven't gone into the spinoffs, cannon or background in quite as
much detail, I just tend to enjoy both as different scifi.

Of course in the case of Dr. who and jrr tolkien, the story for me is
extremely different ;D.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Hi Shaun,

Smile. I noticed. That's why it is necessary to pay attention to the
entire thread. Instead of a single post.

At any rate an analog firing system wouldn't effect most guns as it
doesn't matter how hard you squeeze the trigger as the impact from the
bullet is going to be the same. However, a punch, kick, sword swing,
as you know, can very depending on how much force you put into the
attack. I think it is this aspect that Ken and others were aiming for.
Although, I think it would make it a bit complex for some gamers as
I've already introduced several new concepts that are giving VI gamers
problems.

Re: [Audyssey] analog Weapons system

2011-05-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Ken,

You are right. It probably wouldn't take a week. Not more than a
couple hours, but the length of time wasn't my point. My point was
that as a developer I have to make decisions weather I want to spend
time working on feature x or something else like adding a new level
etc. I've got an extremely busy schedule and don't have 24/7 to devote
to game programming. So I have to budget my time wisely and figure
out what is the most productive and important things to do with my
time.

For example, I generally try to set aside about four hours of free
time a day for game programming. Sometimes more sometimes less
depending on availability. Now, if I spend four hours working on an
analog fighting system that's an entire day of work gone. I still may
have bug x to fix or level x to add so I'm at least one day behind my
own schedule. If I get more than one feature request like this it
really adds up and the project is in a nutshell going nowhere because
I'm focussing on things that can be added later, but are wanted now.
That's why I hesitate to say I'll do something like this because I
just want to get it done. I'm tired of working on MOTA.

Re: [Audyssey] Happy Star Wars Day

2011-05-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Alfredo,

As many people have already stated the difference between Star Wars
and Star Trek is very very different. Totally different in approach
and the kind of story the author wanted to present to his audience.
Beyond the fact they are both classified science fiction they are very
quite different and I recommend you either watch the movies or get
some books as they are both two very great science fiction series.

Star Trek is a television series based on a future society of humans
who's mission or mandate is to seak out new life, new civilizations,
and to bouldly go where no man has gone before. In brief, Earth is
the head of a galactic federation, the United Federation of Planets,
and has a fleet of starships called Starfleet which performs space
exploration during peace time and acts as a military during war time.
Since the show is based on sscience and exploration the writers tend
to use a lot of scientific theory or speculation on what future space
exploration might be like, and what kinds of conflicts may arise once
we begin meeting new and perhaps more hostile races. To date there has
been 11 full length movies, five television series, a brief series of
cartoons, and hundreds of books.

Star Wars is mor fantacy than science fiction. Unlike Star Trek which
is set in the future Star Wars is set in the distant past long long
ago in a galaxy far far away. It mainly deals with a group of
semi-magical or semi-religious people known as the Jedi Knights. The
Jedi Order is a group of Jedi Knights and Jedi Masters who have
special powers and abilities, and they have set themselves up as peace
keepers and defenders of the galaxy. However, there is an equally
powerful group of people known as the Sith, dark Jedi, who have dark
powers and use their powers for evil purposes. As there are now
several different Star Wars series its impossible to explain it all in
a single e-mail, but there are about five different time periods
involved in the Star Wars saga.

The Knights of the Old Republic. This series primarily deals with what
things were like during the foundations of the Galactic Republic
thousands of years before the first movie Star Wars A New Hope. This
ongoing series is fairly knew so I'm not exactly up to speed on all of
it myself, and is all based in books and comics.

The Clone Wars. This series takes place about 20 to 25 years before
Star Wars A New Hope and mainly involves Luke Skywalker's father
Anikin Skywalker and future teacher Obi-wan Kenobi when they were
young and battling during the Clone War. This is an animated
television series as well as three live action movies. There are also a
number of books set in this time period as well.

The Imperial era. This starts with Star Wars A New Hope, and is the
first book/movie ever created. It takes place about 19 years after the
end of the Clone Wars with Luke Skywalker, his sister Princess Leia,
Hon Solo, and many of the original Star Wars characters. Luke is
trained by Jedi masters Obi-Wan Kenobi and Yoda, and eventually Luke
becomes the new master of a new Jedi order who start out by freeing
the galaxy from the Empire.

Following the Imperial era comes the New Jedi Order. This series of
books takes place about 25 years after Star Wars A New Hope. Luke
Skywalker and his Wife Mara Jade Skywalker are leaders of a new Jedi
order who have restored peace and tranquility to the galaxy when a
race of aliens from outside the galaxy invade the New Republic and
concore the galaxy. Luke and his army of Jedis fight to defeat the
Vong and kick them out of the galaxy.

The Legacy series takes place about 40 years after Star Wars A New
Hope. Luke's nephew, Jason Solo, is seduced to the dark side by the
last remaining member of the Sith, Lumia, and starts a rebellion
between Corellia and the Galactic Alliance. Jason unfortunately does a
complete face turn and murders several Jedi Knights including his
aunt, Mara Jade, and in the end his twin sister must hunt him down and
stop him before the entire galaxy is drawn into endless civil war.

Finally, there is the newest series, Fate of the Jedi, which is the
aftermath of the Legacy series. There are some new leaders in the
Galactic Alliance who are hostile towards the Jedi Knights and blame
them for the civil war. They try to arrest Luke Skywalker and charge
him with causing the civil war, but he exiles himself from the G.A.
and uses that time to investigate why the Sith have returned.
Meanwhile a number of Jedi Knights are coming down with some sort of
mental disorder that is causing them to go crazy and go on a killing
spree. Its a interesting series so far.

Anyway, you now have an informed idea of how different Star Wars and
Star Trek are. They are quite simply very different.

Hi Dark,

Definitely. I loved the Ewok movies as a kid. I had a number of toys
that went along with them including a large stuffed Ewok, several Ewok
action figures, and the Ewok village playset that was made for ROTJ
and the Ewok movies.

Which reminds me. Since this is suppose to be about games I think an
Ewok game would be sort of cool. I have a bunch of Ewok sound effects,
and plenty of them from the little fuzball, Wikit, himself. He was a
great kids hero, and I felt was always very apealing to small
children.

they've only released selected episodes on dvd unfortunately.

In terms of games I agree. All three of the Snes super starwars games are
great, and all have rather amusing unlock codes that let you play any stage
of the game with any character and weapon.

So if you want chubaka in the sand crawler level blowing up tuscans and
jawas, you can!

return of the jedi though is deffinately the best of them, and features far
more characters to play as sinse as well as Luke, han andd chuee, you can
also play as the princess (both in and out of the desguise she wares in
jaba's palace), but also as wickit the ewok, who is surprisingly one of the
best characters in the game. His bow is medium strength but unlike Han and
chuee who start with weaker guns, can't be powered up, and he's only got
medium health, however he jumps farthest, and can even fire arrows into the
wall and jump off them.

Best of all, he's tiny, so lots of stuff misses him!

Your only suppose to be able to play wickit in the endor part of the game,
but with the debug cheat code it's possible to do the hole thing as him
which is awsome, having him gun down jaba the hut, fight his way
through storm troopers in the death star or even take on Darth and vader
emperor palpatine is really rather fun! especially sinse compared to the
difficult battle Luke has, Wickit completely wipes the floor with palpatine
because he's so small the Emperor's lightning misses him completely ;d.

For an ewok game though, one thing that might be fun might actually be a
stratogy affair, where you need to deal with the emperial forces only having
a bunch of ewok's with primative weapons. That could actually be rather fun!

Hi Daren,

There are two full length animated movies called Star Wars the Clone
Wars part I and Star Wars the Clone Wars Part II. That would give you
10 movies in all. You'd have 8 live action films and two animated
movies. Although, for some reason Lucasfilm doesn't count the Ewok
movies or the animated movies as part of the official Star Wars saga
even though that they are still Star Wars related movies.

Re: [Audyssey] Happy Star Wars Day

2011-05-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Yeah, the Super Star Wars games were really great. I don't know about
you, but that sounds like a great idea for a future
project now that I've got a really decent game engine. You can see
what MOTA can do, and once I get the cross-platform version up and
running I should be able to crank out a game like the SNES Return of
the Jedi game pretty easily.

Anyway, as for an Ewok game their weaponry would definitely be pretty
primative. All they basically use is slingshots, bow and arrows,
wooden spears, and some come with a little knife. That's not exactly
great for taking on the might of the Empire, but as you know they have
so much agility and dextarity that they can strike before being
blasted.

For example, in ROTJ I love the scene where the storm trooper
commander is telling Han and Leia to surrender, they are surrounded,
and is acting like head sob in charge when Ewoks litterally leap out
of the red wood trees right on top of him and start beating the storm
troopers into the ground. The air iz full of arrows, flying rocks, and
the storm troopers definitely get the worst of the battle. Lol!

Oh, then there is the scene where the Imperial walker is about to
enter the battle when two Ewoks land on the roof, open the hatch, and
land on the two unsuspecting guys in side. They basically bale out
while the Ewoks go on a hell raising campaign by blowing the ever
lovin' crap out of everything they see with the laser cannon. Its
funny as heck. Lesson for today boys and girls is never underestimate
the might of the Ewoks.

Cheers!

 Hi tom.

Actually i had a bunch of the ewok stuff myself, especially the figures and
 the village.

I also remember the animated ewok's series which along with droids was the
first Starwars cartoon, both of which I was a huge fan of. Sadly though
they've only released selected episodes on dvd unfortunately.

 Beware the grue!

 Dark.

Hi Daren,

There are two full length animated movies called Star Wars the Clone Wars
part I and Star Wars the Clone Wars Part II. That would give you 10 movies
in all. You'd have 8 live action films and two animated movies. Although,
for some reason Lucasfilm doesn't count the Ewok movies or the animated
movies as part of the official Star Wars saga even though that they are
still Star Wars related movies.

Hi Lori,

Yes, I had to fix that bug. Wink.

As far as scoring goes MOTA is not an arcade game so there is no
scoring in the game. I didn't figure the game really needed it. So in
answer to your question there is no key asigned to check your score
although the engine does support scoring if I ever wanted to add that
feature at some point.

Re: [Audyssey] Happy Star Wars Day

2011-05-05 Thread dark

it was the ewok gliders I always rather liked actually Tom.

not only great for dropping rocks, but in the films and animated series you
actually get to see them do a lot of other things, like putout fires by
dropping wet sheets from above, or using the gliders to survey the forest.

i always thought those were pretty cool!

As far as games go, one of the things I like about the super starwars games
is that they were a mix of styles that went through the scenes in the films
with both side scrolling levels and some really rather fun stages hwere you
get to fly various vehicles.

these include several semi 2D stages flying sand speeders or the falcon, and
even a stage later in return of the jedi where you get to actually play as
Lando in the falcon gun turrit blasting tie fighters, which is of course
cool.

The game did have to take a few liberties with the plot on occasion to add
some extra side scrolling stages, for instance instead of buying the two
droids, Luke ends up rescuing R2 from the sand crawler,, and making his way
through some extra areas of endor and the deathstar to get to Darth vader,
but while these are certainly not correct in terms of story, they do make
for good gameplay so i'm willing to forgive them (some of the extra endor
stages with Luke are especially good).

In fact I've been playing starwars computer games for a very long time
indeed.

when i was about 4 we had the rather bad starwars atari game where you had
to redirect lightning from a floating droid with your light saber, then on
the amstrad tape drive computer we had several conversions of the original
arcade games. My favourite was the first starwars game where you flew an x
wing into the deathstar.

So, a starwars audio game would be great, though i did rather like your 3D
idea with some of the other jedi, sinse obviously i've seen the films (quite
a number of times), and would very much like the idea of exploring a
different story in the starwars universe.

Hi,

Come to think of it that sounds like a good idea. Perhaps I'll look
for the dvds and give the Ewok Adventure and Battle for Endore a good
listen tonight. My son likes those movies and it has been a long time
since we had them out and watched them.

As for getting them on home video/dvd I think I purchased our copy at
Wal-Mart for something like $10.00. Which wasn't really expensive
since both movies were on the dvd back to back in wide screen and
everything. Can't beat it with a stick.

Hi Dakotah,

Yeah, that's the classic 80's for you. Both the Ewok movies and the
Ewok Adventure cartoons came out around 1985. Just after Return of the
Jedi came out and concluded the original saga. The Ewok adventures
were suppose to continue the Star Wars saga after Return of the Jedi,
but I guess it sort of flopped as it was a temperary thing. Star Wars
wouldn't really come back to life again until the Thrawn Triligy came
out in hard cover in the early 1990's. Even then it was sort of a slow
return as we had the special eddition rereleases of the original films
in 97 and then the new Clone Wars series kicked off in 99. Which put
Star Wars back on the map so to speak.

Hi Lori,

Ummm...No, I couldn't really do that. To begin with my actual voice is
terrible. Kind of like a teenager going through puberty where it
cracks and doesn't know if it wants to be high or low. Secondly, and
more importantly, I have muscle/nerve damage to my face so it makes it
very difficult at times to talk and eat, because I don't have full
muscle control over my mouth. As a result I tend to mumble words or
slur them because I'm unable to make my mouth properly form the words.
That's why I don't use my own voice for games etc. I will say its
really frustrating for me to try and talk on the phone, and have a
client, friend, etc ask me to try and repete something because I just
can't say what I want to say too clearly.

Come to think of it that sounds like a good idea. Perhaps I'll look for the
dvds and give the Ewok Adventure and Battle for Endore a good listen
tonight. My son likes those movies and it has been a long time since we had
them out and watched them.

As for getting them on home video/dvd I think I purchased our copy at
Wal-Mart for something like $10.00. Which wasn't really expensive since both
movies were on the dvd back to back in wide screen and everything. Can't
beat it with a stick.

Re: [Audyssey] Happy Star Wars Day

2011-05-05 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Yeah, i know about the changes in plot in the Super Star Wars games.
That's really one major drawback to basing a game on a specific book
or movie. A lot of times there are certain events that wouldn't fit
well into a game, and need to be changed to fit better with the game's
story rather than the one it is based on. Therefore you almost have to
write your own story or plot to make a decent game without any plot
changes or plot holes in it. That's actually one issue I've been
thinking about a lot when it comes to creating an original Star Wars
game.

First, what era or series am I going to base this game on? The Knights
of the Old Republic era is fair game right now since it is pretty new
and what we do know is based on a few books and a few video games. Yet
on the other hand the Clone Wars series is really popular right now
with books, movies, and the weekly cartoons so there is a lot of new
plot potential there. Plus many established characters to choose from.
Then, there is the Legacy series and beyond that is also fairly new
and fair game as not much has been written after the Corellian civil
war. Again, there are many well established characters to work with.
Which leads me to question number 2.

Second, what kind of character am I going to use? There are certainly
advantages to creating a custom character as it allows the player to
sort of RPG the game by training new skills, gaining experience
points, and customizing the character however he/she feels. However,
as a fan of the Star Wars cannon there are plenty of established
characters I'd like to play as too.

For instance, Jaina Solo. It has been quite apparent for a long time
now that the Star Wars authors have been grooming her to be one of the
main characters in the newer Star Wars books etc as they slowly phase
Luke, Han, Leia, etc out of the newer books. All the same she is a
pretty cool character for a lot of reasons.

For starts Jaina is the only daughter of Han Solo and Prencess Leia.
She gets her looks from her mother, and Leia trained Jaina in the art
of diplomacy. However, Jaina is a Solo and like her father has the
nack of bending or breaking rules she doesn't agree with, and manages
to land square in the middle of trouble. To add to her character
Jaina's Jedi Master was none-other than Mara Jade who so happens to
have a shady past of her own. Mara was trained by the Empire to be an
elite fighter pilot, assassin, as well as a Sith apprentice, and other
skills she no doubt passed on to Jaina during her Jedi training. We
certainly know that by age 16 Jaina was one of the best fighter pilots
in the galaxy, and joined Rogue Squadron as one of their elite fighter
pilots. So obviously Mara did a great job of teaching her student how
to fly with the best of them. So to make a long story short Jaina's
mother taught Jaina how to be a diplomat, but Mara taught her how to
be a ruthless warrior when the chips are down.

This really becomes apparent in the Legacy series when Jaina finally
tracks down her brother, Jason, and confronts him for starting the
Corellian civil war, the murders, etc. Unlike her uncle, Luke, who
would have no doubt tried to turn him back to the light, I think Jaina
realises that the time for trying to turn Jason is over. She sets
aside her personal feelings, and realises if she doesn't end it nobody
will. She first royally kicks Jason's butt, and when he is down and
wounded runs him through with her light saber. That kind of ruthless
fighting and determination bares the mark of Mara's training, because
she wouldn't have stood for anykind of weakness emotional or
otherwise. Plus I believe that battle in particular took a lot of
metal, grit, guts, whatever you want to call it because this wasn't
some faceless enemy but her very own twin brother she had to kill. I
bet that took a lot of currage and will to setaside her personal
feelings and just do it.

I guess what I'm saying is Jaina is a character I admire for a lot of
reasons. Her life is a series of incredible successes, but also
terible tragities as well. In Star by Star she leads a mission against
the Vong's worldship, and of course on that mission her younger
brother, Anikin Solo, is killed. Jaina goes slightly nuts at the end
of the book and gives the Vong absolute hell for it, but it takes her
a while to get over it. That would be tragic enough except for the
fact that years later she figures out that she is the only one who can
stop her brother Jason and she's the one that ends up killing him to
end the civil war. She's a character I'd like to roll play as she has
a lot of qualities that makes her tough, resourceful, and a great
heroine.

Third, do I want to create something totally new from scratch or clone
something I've played before? This is an interesting question/problem
as I've played many Star Wars games when i was sighted. Most notably
the Jedi Knight series. they were definitely good games, and it would
be the first chance for some of the VI

Hello Tom,
Why has all this time you have been putting MOTA under Beta versions.
Are you using a different versioning scheme that has not ever been used
before?

Hi,
I think it's supposed to speed up gunfighting. In truth, though, if you set
your speed to 12 you don't need it.

Best Regards,

 Hi Shane,

What's Jedi Strike? If you are talking about the Star Wars games I've
been planning on working on none of them are called Jedi Strike. Not
sure where you got that idea from.
