I'm guessing it was a local connection problem somewhere. The server has been up for five days and we didn't see any weird lag spikes last night. Re: [Audyssey] Alteraeon knock spell
(Note - replying only to the original post by Dark. The rest of the thread is a tarpit I'd rather not be mired in.) Locks are an obnoxious mechanic that we as builders haven't been happy with for a long time. The core issue is that locks are too binary; you can either unlock them fairly easily, or you'll just plain be stuck. For the most part we've been dealing with it by adding keys and making things easy to pick, but that's a cheesy hack at best. We've had a couple of proposals for changing locks over the years, we're just not sure if those proposals would actually fix the problems. It also just hasn't been very high priority; there are plenty of issues and problems we do know how to easily fix that we could work on instead. That's not a great answer, but that's why this is still in a state where we're not happy with it. Ultimately, we want a setup where lock difficulty is more consistently set for the area level, and players are guaranteed to succeed in opening a lock even if they're completely skill less and don't have the key. The skills should be able to reduce the time necessary to open a lock. Figuring out all the details for this sort of thing is tedious and irritating. We'll figure something out eventually, but it probably won't be until well past the anniversary event. -dentin Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com On Tue, Jan 10, 2017 at 3:26 AM, darkwrote: > Hi. > > I've been trying to do the drow city close to fort Magnitia, and ran across a > door that was locked. > I tried the knock spell a bunch of times, and despite havig 25 int and 18 dex > couldn't get through at all. Re: [Audyssey] Alter Aeon Cleric Expansion
Dark, As far as I know, there's no new quests for these; they're the areas before you get to the encampment, right at the very beginning. The goal is to teach new players how to use the starting spells and skills for each class, so each area has different stuff in it to make that work. Most people should be able to work through them in a few minutes, and then it's the same for everyone. -dentin Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com On Sun, Jan 1, 2017 at 2:15 PM, darkwrote: > Hi Dentin. > > Great news about the updattes, I'll say primary clerric was a hard class to > play so I'm glad for the updates, albeit I'm loving being a druid right now. > > Can I head back to slo and get the new quests? or would I need to restart > with a new charcter, I'd be interested to see what a druid specific class > area would be like, even if I'd be getting no xp for actual kills. > I know I could create a second character just to see the new stuff, but I > don't really have time or inclination to play two chars. > > if not, fair enough, I'm looking forward to trying the stone knapping skill > which I've seen in the help, and I'll certainly givew leach life a go. > > 've really loved the christmas events this time, and they've absolutely > helped me with lots of advancement, so more events in a couple of weeks > would be lovely. > > All the best, > > Dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Alter Aeon Cleric Expansion
The new year brings changes, and this year we've been working on a massive set of updates to the cleric class. The biggest changes include: - Add new 'vigor', 'fortitude' and 'expiation' spells to the 'divine aid' spellgroup. - Add new 'divine conjuration' spellgroup, with new spells 'radiant orb', 'miraculous vestment' and 'mystic projectile'. - Add a 'consecrate armor' skill, which serves as a high quality enchant usable at low and high levels. - Add new 'condemnation', 'fatigue', 'exhaustion', 'clasp of corruption', and 'death and decay' spells to the 'divine might' spellgroup. - Add new 'divine agent' skill group, with new skills 'petition incarnate', 'petition aspect', and 'celestial audience'. - Add new 'remorse' alignment-based cleric curse. - Add new 'brew unguent' skill, and new unguent-only spells 'devil ill', 'angel ravage', and 'undead scourge'. There's also a few non-cleric updates: - Custom newbie areas for mage, thief, and druid classes, with warrior coming soon. - A new 'stone knapping' skill for making stone tools. - A new druid skill, 'leech life'. - Two new necromancer spells, 'bone tool' and 'bloodbond'. On top of this, Alter Aeon's 22nd anniversary is coming up in two weeks! We plan to have a handful of events, and will be booting up a copy of the 1995 version of Alter Aeon for people to explore and remember the 'good old days'. Lastly, I'd like to personally thank everyone from this mailing list that's played and helped us make Alter Aeon awesome over the years. The plane quests have been a problem for a while; we originally thought that people high enough level to get to gad's landing would have most of the spells. The current plan is to put scrolls for each of the spells in the guild itself, so that everyone can complete those quests. I can't answer to the puppeteer quests. If it doesn't show up on your quest or job lists, I wouldn't worry about it. Seaside is on the west coast of Archais, so just keep heading west from gads landing, past the carnival, and you should hit it. -dentin Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com On Thu, Jun 16, 2016 at 2:53 AM, darkwrote: > Hi. > > Well Ipicked up alter today. Yes, but what is the actual problem? Mush-Z should have everything you need configured already, and this shouldn't be necessary. Re: [Audyssey] Recent Alter Aeon Updates
It depends on what you mean by crafting skills. I doubt that AA will ever be a true 'crafting' mud, where crafting is the ultimate point of the game. We've been gradually adding things that let players build or modify items. The enchanting system gives quite a bit of flexibility into changing and upgrading equipment, however it is expensive. Players can brew potions, scribe scrolls, create spellstaffs, bottle various things, and carve various things. Upcoming skills should allow us to harvest bone for various uses, bottle blood, and possibly make things like bone rings. We'll probably add another grenade type for thieves and the ability to harvest poisons. For all of these things though, you have to invest in the skills and have the levels. Crafting items like this can be a big part of the game, if that's really what you want to do. -dentin Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com On Sun, Apr 24, 2016 at 1:41 PM, Justin Jones <atreides...@gmail.com> wrote: > Are you planning on adding additional crafting skills? [Audyssey] Recent Alter Aeon Updates
I don't normally do this, but I wanted to talk about some of the stuff we've been working on for Alter Aeon. The biggest thing on my mind right now would be ease of use updates, and the biggest one of those would be the 'list search' changes. List search started a long time ago, as a way for players to more effectively search for equipment with stats, or to look for items with special flags or properties. The original code was cobbled together six years ago (!), and over the last couple of months we have been working hard to update it. The new and improved version is now good enough that it's used by default for storage lockers and looking in containers. A lot of the parsing bugs have been fixed, and it's so easy to use that even I can make it work. On top of list search, there has been a pile of little ease-of-use improvements and spam reduction changes. Draak has been adding sounds and sound triggers all over the place, though I don't know how long it will take for the Mush-Z developers to add them all. It's really neat to see so many things coming together from so many different builders and coders. Something that's really important and really awesome to me as a builder is something that most players don't care about: the world map. This has been one of our biggest work areas for a while now. We've been rearranging and updating areas, making them flow together better, and flattening the world map. In addition to this, the way we do world mapping itself is changing: the surface of Alter Aeon is gradually becoming consistent and properly three dimensional, similar to how the world map would look for a large scale MMO. I'd like to say I know what's coming up in the next few months, but I don't. The best I can say is that we plan to add a bunch of new spells and skills, and there are several more areas in the wings. I'd really like to see the Archais fairy quarter open. For those of you who play, I hope you found this interesting. I haven't had a lot of time to spend on the game recently, but that doesn't mean nothing is happening. Re: [Audyssey] Alteraeon stuck
As John mentioned, you keep your equipment gold, and credits when you restart. However, you also get back practices you bought with credits as a 'bonus' when you restart, so instead of starting with the standard 16 or whatever practices, you'd start with 36 if you had bought 20 practices with credits. There's a little more information on it under 'help restart'. -dentin Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com On Wed, Apr 20, 2016 at 1:28 AM, darkwrote: > Hi. > > I've not played alter for a very long time, and I realize the reason why. > there was a massive shift a while ago and lots of changes, like the altering > of clerrics from wisdom to charisma, and I never got around to restarting > Thelok or deciding where exactly I was, indeed I've not played for so long I > do feel I ought to restart things (I was level 26 after all and I know Slo > and Kordon have changed sinse I went through them). > > I do wonder though, rather than just letting thelok sit there with no > bennifits, is there a way to reclaime something if I restarted the character? > > Could I for example get back the practices and weightless bag I bought for > thelok and use them on a new character, or maybe even convert thelok into xp > I could use later. > > i just realized this morning when thinking about muds that this has got me > out of the way of playing alter and I've missed out for rather too long, > which is a shame, so it's time for a new start, but if that new start could > get something from what I spent previously that would be helpful. > > If not, fare enough I'll just start a new char and go on from there. > > All the best, > > Dark. > --- > Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org > If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. > You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at > http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org. > All messages are archived and can be searched and read at > http://www.mail-archive.com/gamers@audyssey.org. > If you have any questions or concerns regarding the management of the list, > please send E-mail to gamers-ow...@audyssey.org. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Honestly, I wouldn't mess with it. What we're doing now works fine. If we switch the list to something else, it'll just mean that we lose half of the list participants, and the people who remain will have to figure out brand new bugs and problems with the new service. Re: [Audyssey] Problems installing mush z
My guess would be that either 1) You've got some really horrible antivirus program that's breaking your computer, 2) You've got UAC (user access controls) set to the maximum level and it's not allowing anything to install, or 3) Windows is horked. I really don't know how to help you debug it beyond this; the easiest would be to check your UAC settings, and see if it's turned up too high. Most people turn it completely off because it breaks too many things. -dentin Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com On Tue, Dec 8, 2015 at 7:44 PM, Jessica Hodges <jlhodg...@gmail.com> wrote: > I am not entirely sure what a UAC is or if I'm trying to install it somewhere > protected. iTunes gives me an error regarding setting up libraries, and a > program called qRead which allows books to be read via the computer just sits > there when I ask it to import a book from online, so I think something might > be messed up somehow. It's been two years since druid was added, and the amount of druid class and skill exp is still half what it should be. One of the reasons for this is because people carve one set of suncatchers, then never make any more of them. Carving was always meant to be a big part of the exp that druids were capable of getting, and without carving exp there's not really any way for me to properly balance the class so it's on par with the others. One question: how many lightcatchers have you broken so far, since the change went in? The rate of breakage is really low, and I'd be surprised if it's happened to you yet. -dentin Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Save files and different regions
If you're saving and loading files in a format that works or fails based on the regional settings of the computer you're on, you're doing it wrong. We call load/save routines which do this 'broken' or 'buggy'. There are well established methods of handling file save and load which don't have any portability or regional concerns; printing to ascii-7 using standard printf in POSIX mode is one possible way, printing to ascii-7 for tags and numerical data and utf-8 for unicode strings is another. Binary formats can even be used, so long as you're strict about byte order specification, but I would recommend against it given the expected usage case. I'm sure I could have figured it out, but honestly, it wasn't that important to me, so I didn't bother to complete the project, but honestly, it's really as simple as watching for text strings from the mud, then parsing those strings to determine which file to play, then play that file. It's not rocket science, and anyone could do it with enough time and effort, It just wasn't worth that time and effort on my part at the time, because the audio would have added only marginally to the game, and I already liked it as it was. But, now that alter aeon has such a rich sound scape, perhaps I'll pick it up again, and see what I can do to get it working on muddle again. A couple days of more or less steady work should solve the problem, though I'm not really one to work steadily on anything. *grin*, so it will likely take longer than that if I decide to pick it up again. The process of 'copying its functionality' would involve almost 500 meg of sound files, a full LUA interpreter, porting of various mushclient-specific LUA modules, conversion of ten thousands lines of triggers and aliases, and verifying that another ten thousand lines of spaghetti LUA code works properly with everything else listed above. Re: [Audyssey] what to do once you finish the newbie island on Alter Aeon
Just to follow up on this a bit more, we've been putting a lot of effort in around Ralnoth recently. We've been gradually splitting off the more dangerous sections and putting them in dedicated 'high level' regions, and have been flattening the difficulty in the areas closer to Ralnoth. East, west, and north of Ralnoth should all be a lot more safe for levels 29-31 than they used to be. When you get to the edge of the safe parts, you'll get warnings about entering level 33 or higher areas. Only go in those if you know what you're doing. If you head south along the southern road, things are less consistent. Going south the level increases more slowly, but we haven't been working as hard to clean things up down there. Good luck! While things are still in flux, the areas near Ralnoth, especially the areas directly east of the town and directly west of the town are less scary than some farther out. Wallachia for instance west of Ralnoth has difficult bits, but is doable for a lower level character or characters. The same is true of the upper levels of the termite hive to the north and east. The admin staff is working to try and bring areas into line so that the transition from the islands to the mainland isn't such a jump. 2. Ask on gossip or chat. While you'll get a lot of differeant answers, these can give you a place to start from. Look at the area list and compare the levels of the area suggested to what you were last running. If it's more than 3 levels difference, give that a pass for a while. The area level estimation system is not perfect, but it's better than it used to be, and the admin staff is working hard to bring it into line. 3. Mooch some off larger groups, then go back and explore in the direction of areas you've been to. 4. Explore. For about 100-150 rooms in any direction from Ralnoth, a level 30 can make it solo. It might be difficult, and preparation might be in order in some cases, but part of exploration is knowing when to run away. 5. Use the area list on the web site and make a list of likely places. The coordinates given in game can help. 0,0 if I remember correctly is just south of the baker's shop in Ralnoth. The rest of the grid is Cartesian. That at the very least gives you a direction to go. 6. Use nearby. 7. Use the profile command, look at higher level character's deeds, especially the end of the list, and see what they did when they were your level. All of these are possibilities that help you figure out what to do and where to go. Further, some areas, such as Old Thalos or Castle Dragnock are areas that you might visit and revisit at different levels for different purposes. If you are someone who hates talking on public channels, find a player who will answer questions via tell. I'm one such, my main char on game is Lexie. As long as you aren't rude and approach the problem understanding that not every player has a rat trap memory for directions, areas, mobs, equipment, fame, levels, etc, then you're in business. Re: [Audyssey] info AudioGames Game Engine
From my rooting around on the web sites, I think I understand why the various blind organizations don't give games much lip service. It's not so much that they hate games or haven't heard about them; is that they're focused on helping blind people survive and provide for themselves. Specifically, these organizations are focused on helping blind people gain the skills needed to function in society and hopefully find employment. The extremely low employment numbers for the blind are no secret, and it should be no surprise that these orgs are focusing on that very hard problem. Playing games is considered a leisure activity, something you do in your spare time, not something you do to put food on the table. In a lot of ways this makes sense - they're mostly charity organizations, and they're expected to show that they're not wasting the money they're given. It wouldn't look that great for their financial reports to say we helped 1 million blind people learn how to play video games this year!, while the employment numbers for those people remain abysmal. [Audyssey] Alter Aeon May 2015 Updates
Alter Aeon is a well established MUD with a long history. It is set in a world of magic and dragons, with regular updates and system-wide events. The game is blind friendly for the visually impaired. Here's a list of changes since our February posting: New and updated areas: - A new level 21 area, the tainted forest north of Smuggler's Cove, has been added on the island of Archais. - A new level 26 area, the Village of Iron Bay, has been added on the island of Archais north of DragonTooth. - A level 30 topiary garden has been added southeast of Ralnoth on the mainland. - The City of Hartmur, in the Ash mountains west of Ralnoth, has been updated and releveled to level 33. - The city of Kora'tur west of Elborat has been releveled and updated. It is now a level 38 group 10 area. Major server code updates: - Our quest system has been reworked, splitting quests into a number of different categories - feats, deeds, and legacies. New leaderboards have been added for these categories, and we've added new commands for reviewing previously completed quests. - Experience caps have changed in the mid level range, making it a lot easier to level for level 20-30 players. - Massive updates to how area levels are calculated, how monsters are built, and how exp is handled for high level players. This should help improve the solo player situation at high levels, as well as make area difficulty more consistent. - Group areas now have a recommended group size. We'll be updating areas to have the correct group size and level over time. In addition, there were dozens of minor updates, including better blind client support, skill and spell tweaks, druid class fixes, and more. For the full server changelog, please see: http://alteraeon.com:8080/changelog/1977-2030 We hope to see you there! Re: [Audyssey] alter aeon help needed
One of the more powerful techniques available to mages is the 'charge spell' approach. The spells 'burning hands' and 'shocking grasp' can do a tremendous amount of damage when they hit, and you can cast them both on yourself before starting battle. You can also cast them on certain minions, like the clay man. Against the blobs, one or two charge spells should kill them outright. You do have to give up an item to use the spells, but it's totally worth it. Make sure you keep your weapon, and give up your shield or held item. Also, make sure to use the 'check' command to look over your character and see if you've missed any of the more important skills and spells. Your strategy is (relatively) sound, and at this point there's not really a lot more you can do, other than making sure you have as many defensive spells up as you can. Tactics will come in later once you have stronger secondary classes with a greater variety of skills to call upon. -- From: Denny Schwab denny.sch...@gmail.com Sent: Monday, April 06, 2015 15:58 To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Subject: [Audyssey] alter aeon help needed Hello, I have been playing alter aeon for a couple of weeks now. David, speedwalk is one of those things that's part of the client - it'll usually have a menu option to enable or disable it. Since it's a mobile client, I'm not sure where it would be, and it's possible the client doesn't even have one. Once you get in the game, I believe you can use the 'hardreturn' command to change the way the mud sends data - that might make the client read more accurately without having to click on the previous text. Re: [Audyssey] Alter Aeon help
Dacia, One of the best things to remember about commands is that most command words, spellwords, and item keywords can be abbreviated. For example, you can type in this command: drop zombie sleeves Or, you could type in this much shorter command: dr zombie Or even: dr zom In general, you can abbreviate item keywords down to just three letters - so when dropping the zombie sleeves, 'zom' will still match the item. I'd recommend you try experimenting with abbreviations until you get the hang of how they work - it'll make the game way, way easier to play than typing everything out all the time. -dentin Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com On Tue, Mar 17, 2015 at 8:24 AM, Dacia Cole dacia.l...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, I'm new to Alter Aeon and would love any help you can provide. Re: [Audyssey] any newly discovered browser MMORPG games out there?
Darren, Regarding Alter Aeon: You play as a single character, but you can have any number of characters in your account and can share/swap items between them. Players can form clans, group together, own boats, and do a ton of other things. The beginning areas are set up as a fairly linear RPG to get people used to playing the game and learning the commands, but after that it becomes a lot more free form. The game is extremely large, and it's been running for a long time so the game world and mechanics are pretty solid. As to other games there are two main ones. Roboid, which is one of those auto battle games but has a nice story and atmosphere and some very good access fixes from it's developer: http://roboid.com/ And Drakor on www.drakor.com which I'm just trying out, which has a good combat and crafting system but it is a little complex to navigate pages of. To be honest I find myself actually in need of something of a break from games for a bit. I recently had a great time with Clokmud and some of the choiceofgames titles, but at the moment even though dRakor is just my sort of game I find I'm not wishing to devote as much time to gaming, - though the fact that I've literally found Patrick Rothfus Kingkiller series nearly impossible to put down for the past week probably has something to do with it as well :D. Do they have to be browser based? If not, games like Alter Aeon fit the bill - you just have to download a client to play it. [Audyssey] Alter Aeon Febuary 2014 Updates
Alter Aeon is a well established MUD with a long history. It is set in a world of swords and magic, with regular updates and system-wide events. The game is blind friendly for the visually impaired. Here's a list of changes since our December posting: New and updated areas: - The Bonechewer Gnoll camp, a total level 130 group area in the wastelands west of Elborat, built by Valront and Corallon. - The Ash Desert Astral Codex, a total level 130 area near the northern edge of the Ash Desert. Area built by Draak. - The city of Dorna, a level 35 area west of Elborat. This area was built by Tanthas. - The Fire Swamps, a total level 115 group area on the Trollway near Dikeman's Atoll. Area built by Kagome. There have also been a lot of updates and improvements to the island of Archais, including new microareas, questlines, and better organization to make it easier to find things. Server code updates: - Lots of druid updates: 8 new spells and skills, including a new tincture, new called animals, new carving options, and two very high level starcatcher spells. Druids also saw a lot of quality of life fixes such as minion updates, brewing improvements, and new 'gather' command options. - Clerics got improved holy weapons, a new 'revocation' curse, and a cursebreaking ability to uncurse items. - Necromancers now have some very powerful disenchanting skills, allowing them to remove effects from items. They also received the ability to shatter soulstones. - New warrior skills included a low level knockback effect, a high level 'reinforce armor' skill, and a 'shield block' skill to work in tandem with the parry defensive skill. Not including the above, there were minor updates to skills in all the classes, along with improvements to bottling, the check commands, lock picking, and more. For the full server changelog, please see: http://alteraeon.com:8080/changelog/1931-1975 Lastly, there's a new Mush-Z release which adds new sounds. -dentin Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Alter Aeon 20th Anniversary!
The 20th anniversary of Alter Aeon is coming up! We've got a big event and some new high level druid skills planned for it, starting on Thursday, January 15 and going through Sunday, January 18. This is a multi-day system event, with various smaller things to celebrate two decades of Alter Aeon. The theme for this years event is Skyfall. This comes hot on the heels of a busy year end event, which brought its own set of updates! A new high level area, the Fire Swamps, has been opened east of the Murlock Swamp, and there have been a lot of code updates as well. Fourteen new spells and skills were added over the holidays, including several enchanting skills for necromancers and clerics, five new mid-level druid skills, and two new skills for warriors. We also made a lot of 'quality of life' improvements to other skills, making them easier to use. We hope to see everyone at the event to help us celebrate! Re: [Audyssey] audio games popularity
I suspect a lot of the reason that devs don't build these kinds of games is because they don't feel there's really a market for it. Between that, and the fact that most devs don't really even consider a blind first person game to be possible, you're not going to attract much talent. Part of the reason we've been able to provide so many areas and so much content on Alter Aeon is because we've been able to use text. Our builders haven't had to assemble custom sounds for each monster and area, we haven't had to build 3D models. We can focus on making areas fun and playable, with quests and stories instead. Because of that, Alter Aeon is a pretty big world now, and we can maintain it with a pretty small volunteer staff. Mainstream games generally can't provide anywhere near as much content as easily. [Audyssey] Alter Aeon December 2014 Updates
Here's our list of changes since the last update announcement in October! New and updated areas: The underground city of Runn-Khal has opened on the island of Kordan. This level 16 zone provides a fun story and quest line for players not quite ready for Qoorik or the other high level areas on Kordan. The catacombs below Azeroth Keep on the island of Archais have been updated and expanded. The area is now a level 27 group zone, and should provide lots of fun for players not yet ready to approach the mainland. On the mainland, three level 31 areas have opened to the northwest of Ralnoth: Wallachia City, the Village of Vom, and the ruined castle of Radobaj. These areas were put together by the builders Draak and Shadowfax. We've also put a lot of work into adjusting levels on the new player islands to streamline them and make sure players can find zones appropriate for their level. Server code updates: Add item fetch jobs to the new player islands. Use the 'job find' command on each island to hunt down available jobs. Additions to the various event commands, including teleporting players to event areas and making events more friendly to low level players. Vast improvements and additions to mob arenas. Mob arenas can now be used as part of events, and there have been a lot of fixes to allow more class spells and skills to work in arenas. Casting cleric spells now requires the wisdom and charisma stats, instead of wisdom and intelligence. The charisma requirement is currently very low - approximately ten points below the wisdom requirement. The charisma requirement is expected to raise by one point every few months until it is four points below the wisdom requirement. Existing players can buy a stat swap for approximately 150k gold to help update their character. There's a new Mush-Z release which fixes some startup/reinstall bugs. Game events: The December advent calendar has been running since the first, so don't forget to log in and get your advent gifts! These special gifts only appear in December, so if you miss them, you have to wait until next year. Our year end events are coming up in a couple of weeks. Check the 'show event' and 'show schedule' commands in the next few days for more information. Lastly, the Alter Aeon 20th Anniversary event is coming up the week of January 15th. This marks two full decades of Alter Aeon, and we expect to see a lot of older faces as well as new. We hope to see you there! Re: [Audyssey] AD and D muds?
ADD is a really bad game design for something like a mud. It works when you use it at the glacial pace of a pen and paper setting, but it only works well if you have a good DM to go with it. In a high speed, real time scenario under computer control, the rules just aren't going to work well. I know there are a few games that claim to use DD rules, but it's invariably with a ton of tweaks to make the game playable. Re: [Audyssey] cross platform programming
Because all of my baseline code is in C++, I ended up writing a bunch of shims for different operating systems. I'm pretty familiar with cross platform porting, so when I need something that ends up being different on different platforms, I just write a shim for it. Examples of shim layers would be general purpose thread handling, tests for file existence, and basic network sockets. Above the basic shim layer are some more modular pieces. A really good example is audio handling: cross platform audio is a nightmare, so I wrote my own audio stack containing the pieces I need and plug that into a driver layer. I'm currently using portaudio, but if I needed to swap it out for something else, I could. Another utter disaster for cross platform porting has been the wxWidgets toolkit. It's about as cross platform as something that's completely not cross platform at all. As a result of this, I use as little of wx as possible, and use my own libraries instead. Instead of using wx threads, I use my threads; instead of using the buggy and constantly crashing wx HTTP downloader, I use my own downloader. I've really only been big on the cross platform thing for a couple years now, but even so I have a pretty solid library of parts to work with, and it's getting a lot easier to get things done on my supported platforms. The moral of my story is twofold: First, be very wary of anything which claims to be 'cross platform'. In some cases, like wxWidgets, 'cross platform' means 'not at all cross platform in any way which is actually useful for real projects'. Be prepared to replace piece of cross platform libraries which do not work correctly. Second, be prepared to write your own shim code. Isolate it as best you can, design common interfaces for it, and put it somewhere centralized. Write quick and dirty test cases for it that run on all your supported operating systems. Avoid putting platform specific code in your applications unless there's a logic organization reason for it: having different versions of fopen in your code is bad, but having a chunk of code for windows apps which checks for administrator permissions is probably necessary. [Audyssey] Alter Aeon 2014 Halloween Havoc
Our annual Halloween Havoc is just around the corner! Festivities kick off in six days, on the morning of Friday, October 31. We've got lots of stuff lined up this year, including the traditional pumpkin cannon contests, pk arena battles, and a new level 16 area for the island of Kordan. We're also planning some special pk arena contests that allow players of any level to compete against each other, regardless of experience or skill level. If you've wanted to try out high level spells and skills that your main character doesn't have, you'll be able to do so in these events. Lastly, our main event quest is scheduled to unfold over the course of the weekend, starting on Friday and finishing on Sunday. We're expecting Pumpkinhead to send lots of ghosts and otherworldly spirits, and players of all levels will be needed to defend the towns. To get involved and see the daily events, use the in-game 'show event' command. We hope to see you there! Re: [Audyssey] JAWS 16 not working with the Playroom?
The current consensus of the Mush-Z devs is that FS needs to fix jaws, and that they'd rather not fix something for a beta version that they consider buggy. Does anyone know if FS intends to fix this, or if it's going to stay this way? Fs has explained to us how to fix it and I've gotten a couple of test builds from Quenton, none of which have solved the problem as of yet. Let's hope we get it done before jaws is actually released. It is the professional vs. home license change that broke it. The fact that the jaws window says jaws professional etc now is what is causing it to not recognize jaws. I temporarily solved the problem in speakDropbox by allowing to force speech to be sent to jaws regardless of whether it is recognized as running. [Audyssey] Alter Aeon October 2014 Updates
Alter Aeon is a well established MUD with a long history. It is set in a world of swords and magic, with regular updates and system-wide events. New and updated areas: The Cloud Academy has reopened! Previously known as the Djinni School for Magic, this level 24 area on the island of Archais was reworked by Bamboo and contains several new quests. A new level 35 area, the Barbary Bridge Road, has been opened along the eastern coast of the mainland between West Naginag and Rogonia. Near the Barbary Bridge Road lies the Sas'kwal Dale, a new total level 114 area. It is the former home of a now disenfranchised tribe of murlocks. It is said a powerful curse was laid on the Dale by the last master biomancer of the Sas'kwal. Mount Blitzstadt, a mysterious peak on the nothern edge of the Ash Mountains, is a new total level 118 area. It is rumored that something immensely powerful dwells in or around the mountain. Two new total level 122 areas have been added to the Astral Plane of Air: The Empyrean Caliphate, a cluster of allied cloud giant and greater djinni villages, and the Great Vortex, an enormous storm system populated by strange animals and elemental creatures. Server code updates: Lots of druid class updates, including more spell and skill exp, automerging of nuts and berries, improvements to spellstaffs and totems, and making it a lot easier to brew salves and tinctures. One of the biggest changes is to make the 'call animal' spell low level, so low level players can call and use animals. If you lose your account master password, you can now request an emailed password reset with 'account password reset'. We've improved the 'where' and 'nearby' commands to make it easier to find places in cities and nearby areas. The web pages for areas have also been upgraded, to display nearby areas and related quests. Item reforging and random items have been dramatically improved. Random items now spawn with much more useful stats, and reforge is more consistent and reliable. Pk changes - damage tweaks to various overpowered spells and skills in pk, as well as making dodge and parry less powerful for casters. Miscellaneous skill/spell changes: Improvements to cleric curses and lightballs, allow climb without knowing the skill, add thief shadow usage to prompts, add Tornius' Reagent for potion brewers, tweaks to various warrior skills, and lots of changes to add exp for the less commonly used classes. Convenience changes: Add support for 'drop all.item', improve channel replay, add 'donate oops', better spam filters on clan storage, and make it harder to lose alignment in groups. There's also new Mush-Z and DClient releases, with more druid sounds! Lastly, don't forget that Halloween Havoc is coming up in a few short weeks. We'll post more information about the Halloween events as we approach month end. We hope to see you there! One of my top recommendations for fantasy and the like is played on iOS, and so that may or may not be open to you. It's hard to make a small list of suggestions. There is quite a bit out there. I'll try, though. 1. King of Dragon pass, iOS fantasy strategy game. This one is something of a hobby horse of mine--I helped make it accessible a few years back and so have played it quite a bit. Basically it's a roleplaying and strategy game in which you lead a clan of people to settle a new land, the titular Dragon Pass. It's rather unique, and has a little bit of everything from battles and heroic quests to dealing with your clan's internal politics, all spiced by a bunch of potential random events to make each game replayable. It takes a bit to get into, but has an excellent instruction manual readable within the game, or online. One potential issue is the price--it's $9.99, which is a lot in the app world. I personally feel it's worth every penny. KoDP is in the App Store at https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/king-of-dragon-pass/id335545504?mt=8 2. Alter Aeon Mud. This one is more traditional, and potentially cool if you want lots of sound effects and so on. There is a fan-made client and sound pack for Windows which turns this otherwise pretty hack and slash mud into an experience almost like the MMORPGs sighted players play, without the graphics. It's a lot of fun, and incredibly popular hereabouts. The gameplay is pretty much hack and slash as I said, spiced with quests and more traditional mudding stuff. I'm personally more of a roleplayer than a hack and slash fan, but I feel obliged to recommend the game to you anyway. The client is found at http://www.mush-z.com. It's not the same playing the mud without it, but that's at www.dentinmud.org if you feel so inclined. These are two recommendations to hopefully get you started. Others will probably chime in with more, and I'm running over the message size limits as it is. I hope you enjoy, and do keep us posted. Re: [Audyssey] Lworks discontinuing sales of legacy games
The actual details of making Alter Aeon accessible were much easier than for most projects, because the game server itself is purely text based and already had low spam modes. Most of the accessibility changes were additional filtering, special commands to display single pieces of information instead of an entire screen, and a dedicated blind mode that changed how certain things were displayed. None of these took a huge amount of time alone, but there were a lot of them. As for why I originally did it, I thought it was amazing that the blind were playing the game, and I was bored, and I liked the person who asked. I keep doing it now because most of our players are blind and we have a solid community built up on the server. I consider the blind/VI crowd to be my largest target audience. As I mentioned above, keep in mind that Alter Aeon had a lot going for it right from the start: the server was purely text based, we had spam filters for other reasons, and our blind community started Mush-Z on their own. Most mainstream games will have zero of these things, and it'll be a LOT more work (if not impossible) to convince developers to support the blind. Re: [Audyssey] microsoft changes - Re: Fwd: LWorks discontinuing sales of Legacy games
It's a lot more complicated than that, Jody. 1) You have to know that accessibility is a problem in order to search for it (most developers don't.) 2) You have to think that it's worth doing (most developers don't.) 3) You have to spend the time rearchitecting your software (most developers won't.) 4) You have to get blind friends and software to test (most developers won't.) All four of these are real problems, and each takes real time to overcome. It's a much higher hurdle than 'they should just search on google'. Searching on google is arguably the least time consuming part of the process. Re: [Audyssey] microsoft changes - Re: Fwd: LWorks discontinuing sales of Legacy games
Jody, I'd like to address just one point in particular: On Wed, Sep 10, 2014 at 10:53 AM, Jody McKinniss jlove42...@gmail.com wrote: 2) You have to think that it's worth doing (most developers don't.) Hmm. This is puzzling to me, since as a developer I would want to reach as many people as possible. It's important to remember that developers want to reach as many people as possible, given the limited resources they have to reach those people. The key here is 'limited resources'. Adding proper accessibility to a system usually takes up a pretty big percentage of your development resources on a project. The blind community is small, and if you're going to focus on it, you have to be really sure it'll pay off. Otherwise, the time a developer spends supporting the blind could have brought in ten or a hundred times as many sighted people. In other words, it's a risky business decision as a developer to add accessibility. Sure, being accessible gets you more users, but it usually gets you less users than improving the non-accessible parts of the system. Big companies and products, like microsoft windows, support accessibility for a bunch of different reasons: 1) They've already got nearly all the sighted people, so adding sighted features isn't going to bring in more users. Adding accessibility might though. 2) They can allocate just a few developers, far less than one percent, to work on the hardest problems and get a minimum amount of support and still have it be useful. 3) There are special contracts you can get that are worth obscene amounts of money if you can sell accessibility in the right places at the right time. 4) They might get sued if they don't offer at least some support. Keep in mind, most of these reasons really only apply to big companies and big projects. For small developers, it's almost never worth the effort. As a small developer: 1) Your biggest audience by far is going to be the sighted crowd, unless you specifically pick a VI project from the start. 2) You've only got yourself, and if you only allocate an hour a week to accessibility, you're just not going to get anything useful done. As an example, it's been years of occasional research, and I -still- don't know how to make the main window in the Alter Aeon custom client reader capable. 3) You're too small to get those lucrative contracts and special deals that might make a profit. 4) Nobody's going to sue you to force you to add accessibility, both because small developers don't really have enough money to make it worthwhile, and because accessibility laws only apply to big companies. There's always exceptions, such as Alter Aeon. We initially added accessibility because I made friends with several people, and they asked for simple things that were easy to implement. I gradually put more and more work into accessibility over the years because there were more and more blind people playing, and I decided to go all out with it when I realized that I'd rather work with the blind than most of the mainstream sighted gaming crowd. However, that's the exception, rather than the rule. In summary: most developers don't support accessibility because it's not the best use of their time. Re: [Audyssey] Fwd: LWorks An update including questionsandanswersregarding Super Liam and Judgment day
Dark, As a developer, I must disagree with the 'need' aspect of your statement. Liam doesn't 'need' to do anything - he created the program with intent to sell it, and he has every right to simply take it off the shelves and let it rot if he wishes. He's under no obligation to release anything ever, and IMHO it's not our place to tell him what he should or shouldn't, can and cannot do. If we, as a community, really want those games to be available and archived for future generations, I propose that we contact him with intent to buy the games and keygen from him. For a sufficient price, he can probably be convinced to turn over everything, as long as someone else deals with the support issues. If we can't come up with a price he's comfortable with, it's not his fault, and we shouldn't pester him further. Re: [Audyssey] Fwd: LWorks An update including questionsandanswersregarding Super Liam and Judgment day
Dark, I still disagree. He has no responsibility or duty, and no matter how rare those kinds of games are, it is firmly not his problem to ensure they get freely released. Feeling entitled to always have these games available for any reason, whether because the games are uncommon or because we're a 'small community', does nobody any favors. Isn't this exactly the kind of thing that started the massive flamewar thread on the audiogames forum, a flamewar which is continuing even as we speak? As I said before, if we as a community think it important enough to make these and other games free in the future, then we should get together, assemble the necessary cash, and pay the developer to have it done. Dennis Towne Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com On Sun, Sep 7, 2014 at 3:08 PM, dark d...@xgam.org wrote: Hi Dennis. You are certainly correct that Liam has ownership of the programs being their creator, however equally given the lack of size of the audio games community and the lack of games available, there is rather more impetus riding on each game than in a usual development setting. There are less than 10 available audio 2D side scrolling games, therefore the loss of one, especially one with the quality of sound design of superliam is quite a major blow to over all availability. This is why in the past developers when no longer able to maintain support or sale for their games made them abandonware and distributed a keygen program, and let someone else host the finished product. justin Dobemire last year abandoned his games and sold a key generator, however now that those are no longer available nobody who has not previously bought the games or the keygen will ever legally be able to play them. In many ways, it is almost more of a slap in the face to the community to say well nobody is ever playing these games again I agree that the authority rests with Liam, however given that he is playing with proportionaly such a large share of the available titles for access I do think he has some degree of responsability, or at least a duty of considderation to his customers, and indeed to future players of the game, if not on a legal, at least on an ethical level. justin dobemire followed a similar deicsion last year. he sold a keygen for his games, then closed his doors forever. This means other than the people who bought that keygen, nobody can ever legally play his games again or install them on another machine. This has understandably annoyed lots of people, and I don't want to see Liam making the same error. In the real world, when things like this happen that people care about enough, people set up or find a trusted non-profit foundation, get funding for it, buy the resource in question, and let the non-profit give out access. In this case, that's probably overkill, but one possible model would be: 1) audiogames.net decides it's going to try to buy the rights to the program 2) audiogames.net solicits donations and help in buying the program 3) once it's purchased and rights have been acquired, audiogames can do whatever it wants, including give it away for free. It's really that simple, and frankly it's the only fair way if the developer doesn't want to release it. You are of course correct that the ultimate disposal of anything is up to the owner, however there are other considderations than merely possession, indeed this is a principle which capitalism has largely lost but one which was important at one time, the respect of the seller for their customers. I don't see how the seller is disrespecting its customers by closing up shop or removing a title from its shelves. The people who already bought the product are the customers; they have their product and don't need to worry if it stops being available. The people who didn't buy the product aren't customers, didn't pay for the product, and don't deserve anything. Considder for example what would happen if you took Alteraeon down now, burnt all the code and said nobody ever plays this againn! You are quite within your legal rights to do that. It's largely your game and your server that hosts it, however you'd make a lot of people very unhappy in the process in denying their desire to play your game. No matter how many people would be unhappy, I'm still under no obligation to keep it up and running. If the people really are -that- unhappy, then they should band together and pay the developer - either to sell the product to a trusted entity to keep it running, or to pay the developer to keep the product active. You can't just declare that the developer has obligations beyond completed sales, unless those obligations are actually included as part of the sale (for example a warranty, or express guarantee of key replacement.) As far as I know, neither AA nor Liam's games have any such post-sale obligation, and it rankles that people think there is when there clearly isn't. Of course, I intend to keep my games up and running for the forseeable future, likely several decades; however, I am doing this because I -like- doing it, not because people would be sad if I stopped. Re: [Audyssey] making things last
Exactly. I usually plan on losing at least one hard drive per year with my setup, so I generally keep a couple spares on hand at all times. That said, drives are pretty much the only thing that blow up on me - I've had probably 20 drives fail over the years, but only two power supplies, and zero of anything else that I can remember. The worst part about it? The drives are where -all- of the important stuff is. If you lose all your drives, you lose your recordings, your software, your music, your games, etc. If you lose a processor or power supply, you can just swap out for a new one, but if your last good drive goes, you're screwed. Always keep lots of backups of your data. Re: [Audyssey] dota 2
DOTA 2 is a small team based game with around a hundred different heroes to select from. There are two teams, each containing five players, and the goal is to take over the other team's base on the far side. There are defense towers and various minion spawn that prevent that from happening early in the game, and teamwork is hugely important. You can get it at: http://www.mush-z.com Dennis Towne Alter Aeon MUD http://www.alteraeon.com On Fri, May 30, 2014 at 10:24 AM, ishan dhami ishan1dha...@gmail.com wrote: Hello everyone! Re: [Audyssey] Dungeons Dragons for the blind
Tyler, are you looking for true DD, or just an RPG with swords, magic, dragons, and other DD related things? There's a lot of online servers for such things, just not many that are true DD rules. Most rp dice I've seen don't have spots like the usual D6's you might get with a game of monopoly or whatever. They have actual printed numbers which aren't tactile, which makes sense given your dealing with dice with up to 20 sides so you'd have to be putting lots of spots in a small space. I did find it was possible to get braille lables to fit the larger sized dice, however the D20 had faces which were just too small, one reason why the Gma dice program or similar is a better alternative for access. If you've seen any rp dice with tactile faces I'd be very interested to hear about it. I did recently hear of a company called 64 ounce games who were looking into making D20's along with braille sleeves for some popular none traditional card games but I'm not sure where that is or whether they do all the various other types of dice needed for DD.
