[Audyssey] Question for Thomas Ward

2009-01-31 Thread William L. Houts

Hi Thomas,

I'm directing this at you, but the questionand its answer might be useful to
others on the list, so I'm posting it here. My question is simply
this...I'm very interested in becoming a coder. Specifically, I have notions
of building a blind friendly MUD from scratch. I have ideas for a unique
magic system, diverse skills from fishing to the crafting of magic rings,
several denominations of coin, numerous guilds and several other features
which I may see on individual muds, but never all of them in the same game.
What programming language or environment would you recommend that I
investigate for this kind of project? I've never coded before, but as
Hannnibal Lecter says I have oodles of time and the bloody mindedness you
need to complete projects of this scope. I'll be eager to hear any
suggestions, warnings and words of wisdom you might have for me. I am eager
to make a significant contribution to the blind gamer community, and to
anyone who wants real depth of play in a sophisticated text MMPORPG.

Thanks,

Hi,
that's strange, cause if you jump, you should have enough time and speed to
leave the volcano far behind you. Just don't be afraid to jump up as soon as
you land, again and again, you should always hear a little single troop or a
firepit long before you jump into it. Then you can slow down and walk or run
towards it and start jumping again. Even running works fine if you do not
hesitate too much, but the sucker stays much closer at your heels. :-)

Hi all,
I am ramping up plans for an online head to head fighting game. At first
it will mostly be a test bed for latency issues, so I can see what the
limitations are for head to head combat over the internet.
One idea I am picking at is the inclusion of The nintendo Wii
controllers

for the game.
It is possible to use the Wii controllers via a blue tooth hookup with a
PC.
Having used these controlers on my Wii, I can tell you they are amazing.
In the boxing game, the faster you punch with the controller, the harder
your character punches. In Mortal Combat, you draw a pattern in the air
with your controller to execute certain moves.
All of this functionality is available with the PC port of the
controller

software.
My question is, how much would the average blind gamer be into this?
I think the draw to a head to head fighting game would be good, assuming
lag issues could be worked out, but would the average gamer be willing to
drop the $50 or so necessary to buy a controller and blue-tooth hook up?
The possibilities for useing the Wii controllers is immense for
accessible gaming, most especially for action titles.
The balance board can be used as well, another $80 or so. Think of the
ability to dodge your opponent simply by leaning, or run away from a
monster by, well, running.
Anyhow, it is an exciting concept, what do you guys think?
Later,
che

Hi William,
For the moment I am just looking at Windows for the immediate future. I
can't say if or when a Mac version will appear now that that the cross
platform engine continues to crash all the time. I am suspecting I am
using more audio channels at a time than SDL Mixer can handle. I might
have to completely rework the sound support so that I use a lot less
audio channels in use at any one time.
one of my cross platform projects, Star Trek, uses SDL and I am not
having any issues remotely like those I am experiencing with MOTA.
Though, admitedly the Star Trek game uses under 50 sounds at any given
time where MOTA has on average about 100 which might be just a little
much for SDL Mixer.
My point is cross platform games are definitely on the way, but I don't
know that I can do it with each and every game just do to certain
specifications required to run them. There are certainly advantages to
sticking with DirectX and some Windows stuff for some games over SDL.
The games are able to be ported easily will get ported. Some of them
like MOTA I'd like to port, but am encountering way too many issues at
the time being to do it.

2009-01-31 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Jim,
Other than the fact .NET Framework 1.1 creates an extra user acccount
you can delete I don't foresee any problems installing the .NET
Framework. The .NET Framework is just a set of libraries that run
C-Sharp and Visual Basic 2003, 2005, and 2008 applications. I've sold
about 200 copies of Montezuma's Revenge and at no time have I gotten any
tech support e-mails about .NET Framework 3.0 or 3.5. When I released
STFC, which initially was built for .NET Framework 1.1, I did get a few
tech support issues about that extra user account 1.1 adds. They would
restart and got a login screen and wanted it turned off. Simply deleting
the .NET account it created solved the problem. To date that is the only
issue I've heard of.
As for your issue with updating Windows in general I am a bit mystified
as to the problem. Generally installing service packs are a good thing.
They fix all sorts of nasty bugs, fix critical security issues, and
generally make Windos more stable not less so. I've got Service Pack 3
on XP and it runs great on XP. XP with Service Pack 3 is several times
more stable than Windows Xp without any service packs.
Anyway, not trying to convert you here. Just commenting as to the fact
updating your system shuldn't be causing you grief. Windows Update and
Windows service packs are meant to be easy and painless to install for
both technically and not so technically minded computer users. Smile.

Hi,
MOO's have there own programming language called MOO. It's not very
difficult to learn. I've been coding in MOO for about 4 months, and

you were to become a really advanced coder and wanted to try building

Hi Jim,
Those versions of Rail Racer are very very old. I recommend updating to
at least Rail Racer 1.5 before trying the game. I have 1.5 and it runs
really well. In fact, I think Che has a newer release out, but I haven't
yet got around to updating to it.
As far as upgrading DirectX goes you have to if you ever want to play
any games that use the .NET Framework. By default the .NET libraries for
DirectX do not come with Windows XP or Vista so need to be installed
indipendantly. Installing something like the DirectX 9.0C (June 2008)
upgrade will do it.

without the visual feedback I just didn't think much of it. But now
with a steering wheel and peddles and the audio feedback of Mach 1 tts
it is pretty darn fun.

Re: [Audyssey] message to impatient gamers - Re: Super Egg hunt 1.2

2009-01-31 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Josh and all,
Letting your customers know what is going on is definitely a personal
call. There is a good side to being very open and canded with your
customers, and there is also a bad side to it as well. I mainly picked
the open and canded polacy, because it was the best way to let everyone
know where a certain product stands in development. However, that open
polacy has burned me a couple of times where I have said I was doing
something and the plans fell through do to some technical issue or
other. Like my mentioning I am working on a Mac compatible version of
MOTA. That is true, but now I know that version will have to wait
because the game constantly ccrashes, and I'd rather get the Windows
release out first since it is more or less stable and doesn't crash like
the Mac and Linux ports do. In hindsight I wish I would have held off
mentioning anything about those versions until I had something that
really worked without crashing. So there is always a thin line between
saying not enough or saying too much.

Draconis Entertainment wrote:

Charles and all,

Thank you for your message. This is something very important to
remember. Draconis has the policy of keeping the vast majority of what
we're doing secret until things are ready to be released. We've
recently taken on new staff to hopefully increase the number of titles
we can release and decrease the amount of time between titles.

We've been thinking about the idea of lifting the veil more frequently
on what we're doing, but the type of gamers you're describing makes us
reluctant to do so. We have neither the time nor the inclination to try
to cope with those issues.

Some developers have been driven away by it. Some are quite frustrated
by it. And, in the end, it is the gamers who lose out the most, by
either not getting new games at all, or not getting to participate in
the excitement of a new title under development.

I admire Tom Ward, who has the time and patience to keep everyone in the
loop about his development progress. Those of us at Draconis find such
activity to be distracting and slowing the process of what we really
want to be doing...developing games.

We will have a number of great titles out this year, and they should
start coming relatively rapidly.

Should we lift the veil? Or should we remain silent. It is something
we will continue to ponder.

Hi William,
Yes... I've been doing that with Mysteries of the Ancients, as many
know, and that had very good feedback and results. People got an idea of
what was coming up, and was a lot easier to create than writing up a
monthly news letter.

for the new MOTA but we have to wait for it, whether we like it or not

Hi Bryan,
Well... Yes and no. Sure there are differences between an FPS game and
an old Atari style shoot-m-up, but many of the core concepts behind them
are the same. For example if you write a joystick interface for a game
it makes no difference if the game is Pong or Shades of Doom. The code
is pretty much going to be identical no matter what.
My point being once you know how to program the core features of a game
such as keyboard input, joystick input, do the audio, create a master
game loop, etc you are already 75% the way to creating a game. After
that you just need to write the functionality that fitst the game
weather it is walking, running, or batting a ball back and forth, etc.
If you are an acomplished programmer figuring out how to bat a ball
back and forth or running/walking should come naturally. The skill is in
knowing how to program, and think in terms of logical progression of the
code.

 Hi Bryan,
Sure. Basically, your source code can be written in any ascii text
editor as long as you remember to give it the proper file extention
for the programming language you are using such as: *.cs for C-Sharp,
*.vb for Visual Basic .NET, *.py for Python, etc. That said there
are some advantages to using a full IDE like Visual Studio rather
than writing your code in a generic editor like notepad. Visual
Studio formats your source code as you type it, has autocompletion,
and of course you can select various Windows controls from the
toolbox that automatically generates the code for buttons, labels,
timers, etc. On the other hand I prefer using textpad or notepad just
because I don't have to deal with all the child windows and other
visual junk on the screen in Visual Studio.

[Audyssey] mk info and a combo challenge question.

2009-01-31 Thread Yohandy
If anyone's working on the challenges, I'd be glad to continue posting
revisions. However if noone is interested, then I really don't see the
point. I haven't gotten any feedback on it, so I'm assuming people don't
care much. Also I don't know if I mentioned this, but completing all 10
challenges for a character earns you a trophy for ps3, and achievement
points for the xbox 360. so if collecting all points or trophies is your
goal, then it is crucial that you complete all challenges for each
character. I believe there are 43 trophies in total and 1000 achievement
points. Finally I'd be interested in fighting someone on this list. I wanna
see if you have what it takes lol. If you live in Europe I won't be able to
fight you unfortunately, but if you have a ps3 and are elsewhere in the
world then feel free to send me a message with your info. If enough people
are interested we could even hold an mk tournament.

Hi,
MOO's have there own programming language called MOO. It's not very
difficult to learn. I've been coding in MOO for about 4 months, and
don't find it too hard. A good website with a mailing list, tutorials,
etc is at www.moo-cows.com. Now, MOO is the traditional way of
starting a MOO (with a Lambda/Gamma MOO Server, you'll learn more at
the website I provided), however this isn't the only way to do it. If
you were to become a really advanced coder and wanted to try building
your own server, you could. If you want a more simple, easier way, MOO
is what I'd pick.

Good Luck.

Hi Bill,
Well, if you are serious about creating a mud server from scratch, and
wish to do it right, that is a pretty big undertaking. I don't want to be
discurraging, but it is a rather big project. At any rate here is my take
for a project like that.
First, you need to get the proper software, tools, and environment to
build your mud server. For games like mud servers I absolutely, totally,
recommend using a dedicated Linux based computer to host the mud. The most
accessible, blind friendly, Linux os out there is Ubuntu 8.10. You can
download the cd for free from

http://www.ubuntu.com
and they have a getting started wiki on sight. Also check out the Orca
wiki on

http://live.gnome.org/Orca
which has getting started information for new blind Linux users new to
Linux screen readers, magnification, etc. There are howto docs on there
how to install Linux with speech and so on. Plus the Orca list is another
great resource.
If you were absolutely dead set on using Windows for your mud server it
can be done using a Unix ssubsystem such as Cigwin on Windows Server 2003
or 2008, but it is not recommended. There are a lot of reasons why I
personally say go the hole hog and put Linux on an extra PC you might have
laying around to act as your mud server platform. So why use Linux instead
of Windows?

1. Linux is more reliable - Windows based servers tend to crash or freeze
more often than Linux installations,

that generally run for weeks if not months without needing a reboot.
2. You can install and upgrade new software applications without the you
need to restart the computer to complete
the installation hastle Windows always gives you when installing
software. That of course results in down time for a mud on Windows.
3. Better proformence - the same program, running on the same hardware
(dual-boot) will tend to
run faster under Linux than under Windows. Especially, when comparing a
Ubuntu Linux server vs Windows Server 2008.
4. Much better networking with multi-user support - Windows Server
2003/2008 servers tend to slow down quite a bit when you hit about 100
simultaneous connections. By contrast, Ubuntu Linux is geared up to handle
many connections at the same time, that is why most web

servers and mud servers are Linux, not Windows based.
5. Free software - things you need like the C++ compiler, SQL server, web
server, and many other
software applications are free under Linux. Since the entire operating
system, screen reader and all, is free it will save you money and will
cost you nothing but your electric bill to run your mud server.
6. More support - stuff like the startup scripts out there are geared to
a Linux installation.
7. Better tools - installing snippets is easier with patch and diff
which work best

under Unix (again, they work OK under Cygwin too).
8. Viruses and worms - you know most PCs these days are Windows PCs, and
that is exactly
what the worm/virus/trojan horse writers are targetting. With Linux you
tend to be

left alone most of the time.
8. Better firewalling - Linux comes with built-in firewall tools (again, I
know that

XP/Vista does too) which make it easier to secure your connections.
I don't really want to start an operating system flame war, and I use
Windows (for
example to develop most of my software and like a lot of aspects of it,
however for good,
solid, mudding I think it is hard to pass by Linux as the mud server
platform.

As far as a programming language goes definitely go with C++. Linux is
geared mainly for C/C++ development, and to my knolege must mud servers
are written in C/C++ using the gcc compiler that comes with most Linux
distributions or can be downloaded for free if not. I've heard of some mud
servers written in Java, and I suppose that is ok, but my vote is for C++.
Keep in mind that you will have to get into some rather advanced topics
such as socket programming just to make it online playable and that isn't
the funnest or easiest thing to do in C++. What you might want to do when
starting out is grab a free open source mud server to practice with, find
out how they handled this or that, and use it for a template for your own
server.

HTH.

One joins a room, and selects a user. This is the one downside I have about
the ps3 aside from the lack of psn management through the web is that you

I think, whereas the xbox360 does this for virutally all the games.

build your mud server. For games like mud servers I absolutely, totally,
recommend using a dedicated Linux based computer to host the mud. The
most accessible, blind friendly, Linux os out there is Ubuntu 8.10. You
can download the cd for free from

http://www.ubuntu.com
and they have a getting started wiki on sight.

There are a lot of reasons why I
personally say go the hole hog and put Linux on an extra PC you might
have laying around to act as your mud server platform. So why use Linux
instead of Windows?

By contrast, Ubuntu Linux is geared up to
handle many connections at the same time, that is why most web

servers and mud servers are Linux, not Windows based.
5. Free software - things you need like the C++ compiler, SQL server, web
server, and many other
software applications are free under Linux. Since the entire operating
system, screen reader and all, is free it will save you money and will
cost you nothing but your electric bill to run your mud server.
6. More support - stuff like the startup scripts out there are geared
to a Linux installation.

8. Better firewalling - Linux comes with built-in firewall tools (again,
I know that

XP/Vista does too) which make it easier to secure your connections.
I don't really want to start an operating system flame war, and I use
Windows (for
example to develop most of my software and like a lot of aspects of it,
however for good,
solid, mudding I think it is hard to pass by Linux as the mud server
platform.

As far as a programming language goes definitely go with C++. Linux is
geared mainly for C/C++ development, and to my knolege must mud servers
are written in C/C++ using the gcc compiler that comes with most Linux
distributions or can be downloaded for free if not. I've heard of some
mud servers written in Java, and I suppose that is ok, but my vote is for
C++. Keep in mind that you will have to get into some rather advanced
topics such as socket programming just to make it online playable and
that isn't the funnest or easiest thing to do in C++. What you might want
to do when starting out is grab a free open source mud server to practice
with, find out how they handled this or that, and use it for a template

wanna see if you have what it takes lol. If you live in Europe I won't
be able to fight you unfortunately, but if you have a ps3 and are
elsewhere in the world then feel free to send me a message with your
info. If enough people are interested we could even hold an mk

It's a mud that's going through code upgrade and all the good changes, and
fully functional as well.
The mud features grenades, mines, machineguns auto quests, imm quests, guns

revisions. However if noone is interested, then I really don't see the
point. I haven't gotten any feedback on it, so I'm assuming people
don't care much. Also I don't know if I mentioned this, but completing
all 10 challenges for a character earns you a trophy for ps3, and
achievement points for the xbox 360. so if collecting all points or
trophies is your goal, then it is crucial that you complete all
challenges for each character. I believe there are 43 trophies in
total and 1000 achievement points. Finally I'd be interested in
fighting someone on this list. I wanna see if you have what it takes
lol. If you live in Europe I won't be able to fight you unfortunately,
but if you have a ps3 and are elsewhere in the world then feel free to
send me a message with your info. If enough people are interested we
could

even hold an mk tournament.

Hi Bill,
Yeah, if you don't want to build your own dedicated mud server from
scratch like i described earlier the MOO language might be a better way to
go. When you said from scratch I thought you meant building a mud server
from the ground up which is what I described. Grin.
If you are just interested in writing something rather quickly and simply
working with an existing MOO and MOO language would work better in your
case. Heck, I am a seasoned software developer with a dedicated Linux box
and I don't even want to think about the man hours of building my own mud
server. Grin.

Re: [Audyssey] Question for Thomas Ward

2009-01-31 Thread Ryan Smith
Hi,
I see no reason whatsoever why you shouldn't go that route, to use MOO
code instead of building your own server. Building it would require
lots of coding, probably in C++. Basically, MOO has it's on server
(LambdaMoo or GammaMoo) Server and databases. There are several
databases to use. I personally recommend a database called LambdaCore.
I don't have much experience 'setting up' the MOO server, however I've
somehow done it before, and it's not too difficult. In fact, most
MOO's use MOO Code/Server instead of building there own, as far as I
am aware. I know myself, and a few others, wouldn't mind coming onto
your MOO and helping you code some things. As far as hosting, there is
a free host called Moo Cow Penguin at www.moocowpenguin.net/ .
