Hi Rick,

Going to the text to speech tab in the sounds option in control panel.

I also do the change in the speech option in control panel, just in case it
doesn't click the first time.

2008-11-12 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Lisa,

Either your verbocity settings with insert+V or the configuration manager
using insert+F2 and arrow down to configuration manager will have this
option for you.

In configuration manager, press alt+S and arrow down to html settings.

I think it's in one of the tabs, but don't quote me on that. Smile.

I'm sorry I can't be more exact, but it's been a long time since I've had to
play around with that setting.

Worse case scenario, you can always turn it off in the manage add-ons option
in internet explorer or what ever browser you use.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Winamp

2008-11-11 Thread Victor Gouveia
It's been my experience that if you enter into a folder where everything you
want to include in the playlist is in the folder, once you do a control+A to
select all, then tab over to the open button, all the tracks come into the
playlist in order.

If this is not the case, you need to tell us whether the tracks are
appearing in the playlist with numbers ahead of the title, or just the
titles are appearing.

In any case, there are two checkboxes that need to be checked or unchecked,
as I outline below.

1. Open Winamp.

2. Open the preferences with control+P.

3. arrow down to the playlist item in the tree view.

4, Tab to the checkbox that says, Show playlist item numbers in playlist
editor and make sure it's checked.

5. Tab further down to the checkbox that says, When loading multiple files,
sort files by name and make sure it's unchecked.

6. Tab to the close button and press the spacebar.

Let us know if this helps.

[JAWS-Users] No Speech on Start Up

2008-11-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Folks,

A most perplexing problem has plagued me of late, and I'm wondering if anyone
has any suggestions for it.

Using the latest build of Jaws 9, Windows XP, Norton Anti-Virus 2005 and
nothing else I can think of that would affect it, besides running it on a
Toshiba Laptop, when ever I start up, I get no speech with Jaws, and so I have
to start Narrator, shut down Jaws, then restart it again.

At that point, I get speech back with no problems after that.

I do have a persistent dialog box that pops up when Jaws starts telling me that
it could not load the Braille driver, and I have not been able to shut that
off, or stop it from coming up. I should note that this dialog box does not
pop up when the computer starts, only when I restart Jaws after the initial no
speech.

Can anyone offer a suggestion as to why this happens and what I can do to fix
it?

I have thought that the Braille driver is starting up when the computer boots
up, and therefore gives me no speech, defaulting to the non-existent Braille
display I once had hooked up to it, and so when I shut Jaws down and restart
it, it no longer can find that Braille driver, and so defaults back to the
speech?

Does this sound plausible, and if so, how can I fix this problem?

I would welcome any suggestions.

Thank you all for your help.

2008-11-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Dan,

Thanks for your suggestion, but upon further inspection, I found that the
Braille option was set to no display.

Funny thing is, I switched from automatic detection to manual detection, and
now I'm not getting that same error message and the dialog box.

Having said that, the elimination of one problem did not solve the original
problem.

Still anyone with further ideas?

Thanks again Dan, as ever, you're my hero. Smile.

2008-09-27 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Alan,

The keystroke for turning the volume up or down is the up arrow for turning
it up, or the down arrow for turning it down.

You can also use the hotkey of control+alt+slash to take the volume up to
100%, control+alt+period to take the volume up to 66%, control+alt+comma to
take the volume up to 33%, and finally, control+alt+M to bring the volume
down to 0%.

Hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] Completely Unfair Comment

2008-09-19 Thread Victor Gouveia
I'm sorry, but this comment was wholly unfair, and completely uncalled for.

Whether people choose to investigate the documentation or not before they
come to the list, that's neither here nor there.

If people checked out the documentation first then there would be no need
for a list such as this because people would have all the answers.

I think an apology is in order, and I don't think I'm wrong here.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 9 Question

2008-09-18 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Annette and Patricia,

I have also found this to be the case when I'm pasting something from the net
into a message.

One thing that helps me is to paste it into a plain text message, or, if you
have your messages set to compose in html, go to the format menu with alt+O,
then press the letter X for plain text.

This will remove all of the cells and stuff like that from the message.

Once that's done, highlight the entire body of the message, and copy it to the
clipboard.

Then, you can switch it back to Rich Text/html by again going to the format
menu with alt+O, and pressing R to switch back to rich text.

At this point, highlight the entire body of the message again, and paste what's
in the clipboard over what you've highlighted.

I see no other way of doing this, but truth be told, I haven't investigated the
issue much, as this way works well for me.

Oh, and Patricia, just to et you know, I'll be responding to your message you
sent me off-list later tonight, so please keep an eye out for it.

I'm sorry for the lateness of it, but I'll explain in my message off-list.

P.S.

I guess I must have Rick on my mind, as I kept typing his name in place of
Rich. LOL.

Hi Dale,

Have you enabled the shortcut keys in Skype's preferences?

You have to do this before you can use those hotkeys to answer and hang up a
call.

I'm assuming you have the scripts for Skype, as you mentioned going into the
keyboard manager to set that up, but just in case you didn't, you should.

Like I said, go into the preferences, and make sure the hotkey use is on. I
think it says something like use global hotkeys or something like that.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Skype

2008-09-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Dale,

The scripts add more functionality to the program, such as talking caller
I.D. when someone calls you, letting you know who has signed in and out, the
ability for you to use the instant messaging portion of the program, being
able to browse the different tabs of the program, and various other things
that you can do with Skype, but are too numerous to list here.

While you can use the scripts that come readily installed with Jaws, the
newer versions available from David's site do what I said above, and more,
but again, these are luxuries that can be left alone if you don't use those
particular features I've mentioned above.

However, whether you download the scripts or not, you still do have to
change that setting in the options/preferences to use global shortcut keys,
otherwise the alt-page up and page down won't work for you when you answer
and hang up a call, respectively.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Skype

2008-09-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Rick,

Not trying to be cheeky, but what if that swapping of personal information,
such as a Skype name, leads to getting assistance with Jaws, would it then
be on topic for the list?

This is a serious question, and not meant as a joke.

I would like to know that if someone is having problems with Jaws, and I
feel I can best help them with the spoken word then with the written one,
would it then be permissible to send the Skype name, which, by the way is
not personal information, in my humblest of opinions, at that juncture, or
would it still be off-limits for the list?

I'm also speaking of offering assistance to those wishing it. For example,
if I wrote that I was able to help people set up and install Winamp, and if
they wanted that explanation, they could visit the Jaws user's page, which
is what I usually tell people, on or off list, but is it permissible to say
that they can feel free to ring me over Skype, if they want the personal
assistance?

Again, I am not trying to be cheeky, as this scenario has happened on a
couple of the lists I help to run, and, in fact, one of my lists will
feature a Skype tutorial, on a conference call over Skype, on how to upload
and download files from web based file sharing sites like send space or You
Send It. In any case, the above example is to illustrate that I would like
some clarification here on this, and I think the list would also benefit
from this clarification.

Re: [JAWS-Users] external harddrive question

2008-08-31 Thread Victor Gouveia
Is it being picked up in the device manager?

You may want to go into the device manager and check under the USB
controllers if there's a mass storage device being picked up.

If that's the case, then you will want to uninstall all of the USB devices
listed there, restart your computer, and let Windows recreate the USB
devices plugged into the computer.

You haven't said whether you've tried plugging in the drive on another port,
so my fix above is in case you have tried plugging it into another port, and
you had the same results.

Like I said, this is the fix for a problem such as yours.

Also, you never mentioned whether you've managed to connect this device to
your computer in the past and whether it's been working fine at that point.

Let us know some more information and we'll try to help if possible.

Re: [JAWS-Users] external harddrive question

2008-08-31 Thread Victor Gouveia
If the drive came with driver CD's, and you are running Windows 98, which I
can't remember if you are or not, then you would plop in the CD, install the
software, then plug in the drive.

Knowing 98 the way I do, you'll no doubt have to restart your computer for
the changes to take effect.

If you're running XP, then, more than likely, the CD won't help you, but you
never know.

Most drives only come with driver CD's for Windows 98 computers, as those
are the only ones that will not recognize the drive.

Another thing I just thought about is if you're running 98, and the drive is
formatted as NTFS, then you won't get it to recognize the drive, no matter
what you do.

You may want to take the drive to someone else's computer to see if it gets
recognized there on the other computer, at least to rule out that the drive
is bad.

You might want to Google your problem, detailing the model and serial number
of your drive, if you have it, and the problem you're having, and see if you
can turn up anything that way.

If you'd like, let me know the model of your drive, and the size, as well as
what operating system you're using, and I'll run a cursory Google search for
the problem for you, and post my results.

for a reason, not simply as a convenience for it's users.

After all, when have you ever known good old Bill to do anything for his
customers. I'm sure there are updates that are not included in the previous
updates in that service pack, as when you go to update your computer, the
size of the service pack is only something like 17 megabytes, not the 200 or
something the entire pack is from the download site.

This essentially means that there are updates, assuming you've kept your
computer relatively up to date until now, over and above those that have
already been released.

As you've seen, and I can confirm this on my system, and a few others I've
installed for people, I and those other people have had no problems running
service pack 3, and have found no distinction between one and the other.

Now, and I need you to listen to this next part closely, Mich old friend,
this is your computer we're talking about.

Get me?

Your computer has demonstrated that if it can go wrong, it will, and I'm not
putting you or your computer down, well, I may be, a little, smile, but even
you have to admit that you haven't had the best of luck with a computer, and
that's a harsh truth we have to face in making this decision, so you have to
ask yourself, if you're prepared for the possible problems that may arise
out of running service pack 3, and you better make sure you have a back up
plan, should things go wrong for you.

On the other hand, you may find that service pack 3 runs perfectly fine on
your computer, and you can't even think of what you were so afraid of.

Well, until you have another problem with Outlook Express. LOL.

In any case, you're the only one that can make this decision, but what ever
decision you make, I'll be here if you need me. You have my contact info.

Good luck.

Hi Carla,

Word will automatically convert it for you.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws reading PDF

2008-08-21 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Folks,

I'm just wondering something about what I wrote in my last post.

I have found that a large number of the responses on this topic have advised
Dwight to do everything but use the program's OCR capabilities.

In fact, short of myself, no one has suggested it.

I'm just wondering why that is?

Is it not available on Adobe Acrobat?

Any help would be appreciated, as I am going to be getting a new computer on
there, and I need to know whether I should install the new Adobe Reader, or
re-install my version of Adobe Acrobat 7 Professional.

Hi Curtis,

That's what I was thinking also, as I don't have the Adobe Reader installed
on my system, I only have the pro version, which is why I'm probably the
only person suggesting this option.

Can one save the PDF under another format, such as TIFF, under Adobe Reader?

If so, Microsoft word will use it's own OCR to read the page and present
it's output in Microsoft Word for the blind user to read, just as an
alternative to buying those more expensive OCR packages like Kurzweil or
Open Book.

Hi Flor,

If one owns a scanner, then it stands to reason that the scanner's software
contained a TWAIN compatible driver that Microsoft Word can then use to OCR
the page in Microsoft Document Imaging, which you can find in the Tools menu
of the Microsoft Office sub-menu in the start menu.

Hi Flor,

I guess the difference is that I always do a full installation of any
software I place on my system, this way I'm not hunting for any CD's later
on when I do need that part of the program.

I remember making that mistake the first time and never making it again.

Once you make sure the entire suite of programs is set to run from the
computer, then you're pretty much set, however, if you find you didn't
install it, you can just pop in the CD and re-install it, as it is a free
add-on to the suite.

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws reading PDF

2008-08-20 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Dwight,

Once you open the document, go to the document menu, and arrow down to
Recognize Text Using OCR sub-menu, then arrow down to Start, if not already
there, and press enter.

You'll be confronted with a dialog box asking what language you want to use
to recognize the text. It should say English US, so all you have to do is
arrow down to the start button, and press the spacebar.

At that point, Adobe should start looking for and making the document as
accessible as it can using it's own OCR.

Hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws and Windows Media Edition

2008-08-12 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Folks,

Is there any version of Jaws that will work with Windows Media Edition?

I seem to recall that the pro version did something with it, but I can't
remember if that something was worth taking into consideration or not. Smile.

In any case, a friend of mine is having trouble with her computer, and she
asked me for help.

When I loaded Jaws 9 on it, I found I was having trouble getting focus on
things, and keystrokes weren't the same. For example, when I would go to get
the windows list with insert+F10, it was like I pressed Jaws key+H, to get
available Windows hotkeys, and the help topic for hotkeys with windows would
pop up.

Needless to say, I was really frustrated by the time I was finished, and I'm
not even finished, as there were, at last count, 798 viruses on her computer.

Now, now, I know that those are probably spyware and viruses lumped together,
but regardless if it is or not, I need to remove that for her, especially if
she wants her kids to use the computer.

So, the question still stands, is there a version that will work with Media
Edition, and if so, which one is it?

Thanks all for your help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Windows Media Edition

2008-08-12 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Aiden,

So, by your reasoning, if the pro version of Jaws works with Media edition,
why am I having such trouble?

From all the talk I've seen on the differences between the pro version the
regular version, it's only an authorization difference in the two versions,
and so the accessibility doesn't change between the two.

Am I wrong about this?

What is the difference between the two versions that allows it to be more
accessible with media center, while the other is not?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and Windows Media Edition

2008-08-12 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Aiden,

So with that in mind, as the saying goes, where's the beef?

Like I said, not only were there focus issues when I was using the computer,
but the hotkeys were all messed up. Insert+F10 to bring up the window list,
and got help instead, and don't even get me started on trying to close a
window, the damn thing just wasn't having it.

Alt+F4 didn't work no matter what I tried.

All of this leads me to believe that there was some kind of focus issue
working there, but again, that doesn't explain the window list keystroke and
getting help instead.

Now, I didn't take into account the fact that the keyboard was a multi-media
keyboard, where the six pack was vertically placed on the keyboard, and the
function keys, 1 through 12 were grouped in numbers of 3, instead of what
I'm used to with four, but I don't think that should make a difference,
after all, F10 is F10, no matter how the keys are packed together.

Unless, these were not function keys at all, but I think the sighted lady
would have told me, but not necessarily if she didn't know I was looking for
it.

Sorry folks, just thinking out loud. Smile.

In any case, can anyone shed some light on this.

Re: [JAWS-Users] new computer

2008-08-12 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Alan,

You didn't mention how much ram the computer will have, nor what video card
will be running in it. It would also be a good thing to mention what type
of sound card, if any, will you be running, and any extra software that
might be included in the mix.

In my humble opinion, these are the major factors when considering whether
Jaws will work well on a new computer.

I would also note that since you are getting XP Pro, you'll have to upgrade
to Jaws pro, so you might want to take that into consideration when
purchasing.

Re: [JAWS-Users] This is the error message I'm getting.

2008-08-10 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi KK,

It sounds like a server time out issue, so if you go into the account
settings, through tools, then accounts, then highlight the account, in fact,
you should do this for all of the accounts you have, tab to the properties
button for each account, and control+tab over to the advanced tab.

In that tab, you'll find a slider labelled server time-out settings. Slide
this slider all the way to 100%, which should alleviate this problem you
have.

Like I said, you should do this for all your accounts, as you never know
which account you'll need when sending bulky attachments like this one.

Re: [JAWS-Users] I need help with outlook express please?

2008-08-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi KK,

You can virtualize the window with insert+control+W, which will allow you to
move through the window, then copy the line, that should be further down the
page.

If you find yourself on one of the buttons, keep tabbing and you'll
eventually get to the error message.

If you don't see an error message, that means the errors tab isn't in focus,
so do a control+tab to put it in focus, then, if not in the area that
details the error, tab around until you get to it, but you'll still want to
virtualize the window to copy and paste the error into a message for us.

Oh, I almost forgot.

If you tab around and you aren't getting any details, either on the error or
the status of the mail retrieval, then that means that details are not being
shown, so there should be a button called show details, or just plain
details, and press the spacebar to show the details, then use the virtual
cursor to go through the information in that window to copy it for us.

[JAWS-Users] Looking for Calendar and Cheque Book

2008-08-05 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Folks,

I'm wondering if there's a cheque book and/or calendar program that's simple to
use and works on Vista?

I'm going to be getting a new computer with Vista on it, and the latest version

I am able to download the programs now, so having the computer is not
necessary, as my wife has a laptop with Vista on it, business edition, and
running Jaws 9 that I can play with, so any help would be appreciated.

2008-07-31 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Tim,

While I realize the actual location of the placemarker in relation to the
information you place the placemarker on is subject to change, the actual
placemarker, as outlined in the original post, does not disappear
altogether, as was the initial problem replied to.

I realize, and it's a given, that information on sites like Yahoo, mail or
otherwise, or any other constantly changing site, will update information on
a daily, or weekly basis, however, this should not cause the placemarker to
disappear.

Re: [JAWS-Users] a placemarker question...

2008-07-30 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Andrew,

Your theory doesn't bare out the facts, as I use placemarkers on a daily
basis checking my e-mail via web mail, and I don't have to tell you that web
mail changes on a daily basis.

I would suspect that the issues with your placemarkers disappearing have
some kind of underlying issue than just the page changing.

I'm sorry I can't provide an explanation, however, I felt it was important
to note that I don't believe placemarkers are affected by any changes on the
page, as I said, my every day actions prove that much.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about a particular keystroke

2008-07-22 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Mike,

The 2 keystrokes mentioned in your messages are referring to the same
process within the same type of program.

If you have your view settings set to display messages in plain text, the
keystroke referred to in your message will convert the message text to html,
allowing you to enter on embedded links within the message.

I'm not sure if this happens for Microsoft Office Outlook, but it is widely
used in Outlook Express.

Re: [JAWS-Users] IN Vista, JAWS shuts down when logging on

2008-07-20 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Chris,

When Jaws is installed on a Vista machine, there are two sets of
automatically start jaws options you have to check.

The first is to start Jaws at the log on screen, and the second one is to
start Jaws automatically when windows starts.

If you go into the basics options, you should find both checkboxes in that
dialog box.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] converting multiple files

2008-07-19 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Andrew,

Please find below instructions that I wrote a few months ago on how to do
batch conversions using GoldWave.

***Original Message***

If you are in the Gold Wave main window, once it opens up, if you press the
alt+F to get to the file menu, then press the letter B for batch
conversions, it will open up another dialog box that you can do batch
conversions with, or you can choose to do just one file, it's up to you.

Once in that dialog box, tab to the button that says add, and press the
space bar.

Another dialog box will pop up, similar to the save as dialog box, so if you
know exactly where the file is, go ahead and type it in. If you don't know
the exact file location, just do a shift+tab to the window just above the
one you're in, and backspace four or five times, or until your screen reader
reads out my documents.

Once it says that, just go ahead and find the folder where the files are
that you want to convert.

Once you find the files, go ahead and select them, either, contiguously, or
non-contiguously, and tab to the open button and press the spacebar.

Once you press the open button, you'll land back on the add button. If you
have more files you want to convert, just press the add button and go
through what I just outlined above.

If you don't have anymore files to convert, you can tab to the check box
that says, convert files to this format. Make sure this box is checked, so
you can tell it what to convert the files to.

Once you check that box, tab down to the combo box that asks you what file
type to convert the files to. You must want to select the exact file type
for all the files you want to convert. You can't do one file type for some
of the files and another file type for another bunch of files you selected.
That's why this function is called the batch conversion feature of Gold
Wave. You can only convert the files to the same file type.

Once you select the file format you want to convert the files to, tab down
to the bitrate and frequency selection.
I'm going to assume, for time's sake, that you already know all about
bitrate and frequency rates, and just continue on from here to the next
step.

Once you set the bitrate and frequency rates, do a control+tab over to the
file locations tab to set where you would like Gold Wave to save the
converted files once their done.

You have two choices here.

You can either choose to save the converted files in their original folders,
or save them in a different folder. This I leave up to you, and I can tell
you that this tab is pretty much self-explanatory, so go ahead and make your
settings as you see fit.

Once you've made your selection, just tab over to the button that says
begin, and press the spacebar.

Once a dialog box pops up, with an ok button, you're files are done
converting, and you can just press the ok button.

You'll land back on the begin button, so just tab over to the cancel button,
then you'll land on the Gold Wave main window. You can just alt+F4 out of
that, and you can go delete the pre-converted files.

Just make sure you clear your recycle bin, as those files will use up a lot
of space on your computer.

I would also recommend you check the files for length and bitrate choice, as
you can always go back into your recycle bin and restore the files you
deleted, so I suggest you check the files before you empty the recycle bin.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask, and I'll endeavour to
answer them as quickly as possible.

Hi Christy,

I know that there used to be a program on the JFW Lite site which allowed
for this, but I'm not sure if David has migrated it over to the Jaws users
site yet.

I would have a look on the JFW Lite site at:

Hi,

Just thought I'd mention that there is a plug-in that will allow Windows

I, unfortunately don't have the link for the codec download, however, I'll

I would also suggest that doing a Google search for the plug-in would yield

The two options are for when it's plugged into the electrical outlet, and

I can't remember off-hand which option is set first in the tab order, but
like I said, one is for battery power options, and the other for when it's
plugged into the wall outlet.

In addition to the Descending, as David pointed out, make sure that the

It sounds like you have it sorted by another criteria instead of by date it
was received.

[JAWS-Users] Skype Caller I.D. Anyone?

2008-06-21 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Folks,

I have recently gotten the scripts for Skype installed, along with the two
added lines to include Skypewatch, but have found, to my dismay, that the
scripts don't have any caller I.D. to them.

I thought for sure they would.

Can anyone shed some light on this subject?

Is there a way to find out who's calling so one can, either, refuse or accept
the call?

Any help would be appreciated.

Using Jaws 9, latest build, with Windows XP home, latest version of Skype and
scripts.

[JAWS-Users] Merging Files With GoldWave

2008-06-19 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Andrew,

You don't need to convert the file to the OGG format, as GoldWave will merge
and convert it for you automatically while it's merging it.

It's really simple and I've outlined the steps below.

in the GoldWave tools menu, you'll find a choice titled File Merger...

Hit Enter on that and a dialog box will open up.

Once the dialog box opens up, you'll land on a list view with nothing in it.
This is the list of files you want to merge. Tab to the button titled Add
and press the spacebar. This will open up a dialog box, similar to the save
As dialog box. Navigate to the first file you want to merge and press
enter. You will be returned back to the add button, so press the spacebar
again and retrieve the second file you want to merge.

*please note that the order of the file you select will decide the order in
which the files are merged. They will not merge in alphabetical order, so
please choose carefully. Part one should be selected first, and part two
selected second.

Once you've gotten the two files, tab down to the sampling rate, and set it
to what ever you prefer.

Once you've set the sampling rate, tab down to the merge button and press
the spacebar.

Once you do that, a save sound as dialog box will open up. At this point,
you'll land on the filename edit field, so type in the name of the file as
you want it.

Tab to the next field to tell GoldWave what format you want the file to be
saved as. You should have the option to save it as an OGG file, so arrow
down to the choice. Once you've selected the choice you want, tab over to
the frequency and sampling rate you wish to save the file as, and select it.
Once done, tab over to the list of files and choose where you want the file
saved.

Once you've done this, simply tab over to the save button and press the
spacebar. It will let you know when it's done, at which point, you'll be
able to go into where you saved the file and find it there merged.

Hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] Updating Jaws 7 to 7.1

2008-06-10 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Folks,

A friend of mine purchased the SMA from Jaws 6 and up. She purchased three in
all.

She has since updated from Jaws 6 to 6.1, then to seven, or something along
those lines.

I have advised her that she should update her Jaws from 7 to 7.1, but she
claims that it won't authorize her to do so.

I was always under the impression that Jaws 7.1 was an update, not an upgrade.

Am I wrong about this?

I could have sworn, and have confirmed, by looking through the archives, that
7.1 was an update to 7, and so no SMA was required to download and install it.

She cannot find her authorization number, and so I only have her serial number
to go on.

Is there some way she can find her authorization number using the software?

I have checked the folder in C://program files/freedom scientific/Jaws7.0 and
have found the authorization manager executable file, however, when entered on,
it does nothing.

Does anyone have any ideas for me?

I am at a loss to find out why this is the case.

I do plan on calling FS in the morning, but I may not have the time to devote
to this, as I have several meetings to attend tomorrow, so a reply from the
list would serve me better.

I should note she is using XP Home, and the About dialog box says she is
running Jaws 7.0 something or other, with zero SMA's left.

Thanks for all your help.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Should I upgrade to a newer version of winamp?

2008-05-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Lisa,

In my opinion, I found Winamp 5.35 was the most stable of the versions
released.

The new version tries to install extras like Winamp Remote and stuff like
that for IPods and the like, which I think is a useless piece of junk, but
that's only my opinion.

I have uploaded version 5.35 to Send Space for another list I'm on, and
posted the installation instructions for Winamp for blind users that I've
included with the link below.

Feel free to download and use the instructions on how to install it for
blind users.

***Original Message***

here is Version 5.35, in my
opinion, the most stable version of Winamp out there.

No worries about any extra software to install or anything.

The instructions on how to install Winamp for blind users is pasted
below the download link.

If anyone has any questions on the program or the installation
instructions, please let me know.

You can get Winamp version 5.35 at the following link:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/qizb0l

Instructions for Installing Winamp for the blind user:

First and foremost, when you install Winamp, make sure you tell it to
do a full installation. Why you should do this will become evident
soon.

Once you've indicated that it should do a full install, tab down to
the list, and Jaws should read that all of the items in the list are
checked except for one, that being the Winamp main program. The
reason I said that you should do a full install, is because in
previous versions of Winamp, the install process wasn't 100%
accessible. While it would read the items in the list, whether the
item was checked or not wasn't reported by Jaws, no matter what you
did, so I devised a way to get around that.

I would tell Winamp to do a full install, that way, everything in the
list would be checked by default, so I knew that when I pressed the
spacebar, it would automatically uncheck the checkbox and everything
under that heading.

Another trick was if I used the Jaws cursor and examined the graphic
number beside a checked item, then pressed the spacebar, then checked
the graphic number again, if it changed and was different from the
other numbers on the list, I knew I had that item unchecked.

Granted, the whole Jaws cursor thing wasn't that reliable, but it
worked for me, while it may not work for everybody.

Now, after you've indicated to do a full install, as I said, all the
items in the list should be checked, except for the first item that
says Winamp required. This one isn't checked because there's no need
to check it, as that is the main program.

There are some things in here that you should uncheck, so if Jaws
isn't reading that the items are checked, once you land on the
particular item, just press the spacebar once, then arrow down to the
next item to uncheck it.

The items that should be unchecked are:

Winamp Agent

Modern Skin Support

Video Support * Keep in mind that this is a personal setting of mine,
but it is up to you whether you want Winamp to play videos or not*

Now that you've unchecked the items above, tab to the next button,
and in the following screen you'll encounter a list of items that
Winamp wants to do, and you have to indicate whether you want Winamp
to do it or not.

This is another checked list, however, something I noticed with this
version that I haven't seen in any other version, is the existence of
a smart install engine. What I mean by this, is that in previous
versions of the Winamp install, no matter what you unchecked in the
previous window, the items on the second list were always checked, so
you had to uncheck them manually. That is not the case in this
version. In this version, the items that you unchecked in the first
window, were unchecked in the second window.

Now, that isn't to say that this will happen on all computers, maybe
this was a fluke chance on my computer's part, but a sure way to tell
if the item is not checked, and Jaws isn't reporting that it is or
not, is to run your Jaws cursor over the first item in the list, and
keep in mind the graphic number. This item is always checked by
default, so after you've heard the graphic number and committed it to
memory, go back to the PC cursor, and press the spacebar on that same
first item, then go back to the item with the Jaws cursor and listen
to the graphic number. When you uncheck an item in the list, that
same graphic number should appear before every item on the list. So
what this means is to listen to the graphic numbers after you've gone
down the list and make sure that it's the graphic number that is
associated with the unchecked characteristic and not the checked one.

Now, as for this second list, the following items should be unchecked:

Quick Launch Icon *This should be unchecked if your Quick Launch menu
is disabled and keep in mind, that if you've disabled your Quick
Launch menu, this check box might unchecked by default, so if Jaws
isn't reading the item state, whether it is checked or not, refer to
the explanation

Re: [JAWS-Users] Microsoft .NET Framework at jaws users home

2008-05-07 Thread Victor Gouveia
Was there a reason this update didn't install normally during the Windows
Update process?

The only thing I could think of that would stop this process is if you
unchecked it when it was announced as one of your downloads, or you are not
running Windows XP, and if that's the case, I'm not sure that the version of
Sound Forge you're running will work well in Windows 2000 and lower.

Any clarification on this?

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 9 and internet address bar

2008-04-26 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Carlene,

If the Google toolbar is installed on your computer, you'll find it in the
add/remove programs dialog box, not anywhere else that you mentioned.

I would also suggest you go to the view menu and see what is checked on and
what isn't.

You can do this by opening an internet explorer window, then pressing alt+V
to go to the view menu, then arrow down to the explorer bar sub-menu.

In that menu are a number of choices that will either have a check mark
beside it, or not.

If you see the check mark beside an item, just press enter to disable it.

I would also go through the toolbar sub-menu also to see what is checked on
and what isn't.

Lastly, another thing I would look at are the add-ons that are running with
Internet Explorer, as some add-ons will interfere with some of internet
explorer's functions.

I have found that Spybot does that quite often, something I didn't find out
until I had to disable each of my add-ons until I found the culprit that was
interfering with my surfing habits.

Anyway, hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Extracting audio from DVDs

2008-04-25 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi David,

Being on a list for movies and the like, we get a large amount of these
questions, and I do know that you can select the various languages that may
be present on the DVD itself.

I have copied and pasted the relevant portion of the help file below for
your convenience.

***Begin Help Text***

Select Input

Select Input

Step 1: select the chapters you want to extract

Select DVD-Video Source:
Click the pull-down combo box to select which DVD-ROM you want to use for
ripping. You can also open a file folder where your DVD files are stored, or
open a single VOB file in case you don't have the needed *.IFO files.
Default is the first DVD drive with a DVD-Video disc in it.

Refresh DVD-ROM:
Click the refresh button or press accelerator key Alt+F to refresh
selected DVD-ROM. DVD Audio Extractor will try to read form the new inserted
disc
and refresh it's contents.

Browse to Folder:
In Open DVD files from file folder mode, click the Browse button or press
accelerator key Alt+W to select the file folder where your DVD files are
stored. After selection, DVD Audio Extractor will try to read form that
folder and refresh it's contents.

Note the program needs to read all the IFO and VOB files so when you copy
DVD disc to your hard disk, make sure to copy the whole VIDEO_TS folder.

Open VOB file:
In Open single DVD VOB file mode, click the Browse button or press
accelerator key Alt+W to select the VOB (Video Object) file. After
selection, DVD
Audio Extractor will read from that VOB file and refresh it's contents.

Note this is only provided as a workaround when IFO files are not available
or contain error. You should always avoid using it unless all other methods
failed.

Select Chapters:
All the DVD titles, and all the chapters in each title are listed out in the
tree-list view. If a title contains more than one angle, then all the angles
are also listed. Select the chapters you want to play or rip by clicking on
the chapter's check box, or active the row in the list and press the SPACE
key.

If you select or unselect a title (or angle), then all the chapters in that
title (or angle) get selected or unselected. To get all chapters in a title
expanded/collapsed, click on the +/- mark before the title or, activate
the title and press the ENTER key.

You must select at least one chapter to continue. By default, all the
chapters in first Title (and first Angle, if more than one angle present)
are selected.

Select Audio Stream:
The first audio stream on each title are selected by default. If you click
at the Audio Stream grid of a title (or angle if more than one angle
present),
a combo box with all the available audio streams will be displayed. You can
select the one you want to use. The stream you selected will be used on all
chapters in that title.

You can also active any chapter, then press the Accelerator keys F7 and
F8 to navigate though all the available audio streams. Note that when you
change
audio stream for any chapter, the selected stream will be used on all the
rest chapters of the same title.

When multiple title are selected at once, the maximal output channels and
samplerate will be calculated from the selected audio stream of the selected
titles.
For example, if you selected PCM (96kHz 2ch) on Title1, and AC3 (48kHz 6ch)
on Title2, then the maximal output channel will be 2ch and maximal output
samplerate
will be 48kHz.

Play Selected Chapters:
Use the Play Control Panel to preview/playback the selected chapters, so
that you can be sure those are really the chapters you want to extract.

table with 2 columns and 5 rows

Start playing the selected chapters, or resume if paused. Accelerator key:
Alt+P.
Pause. Accelerator key: Alt+U.
Go to last chapter. Accelerator key: Alt+.
Go to next chapter. Accelerator key: Alt+.
Stop playing. Accelerator key: Alt+T.
table end

During preview/playback, you can click on the Video On option or press the
Accelerator key: Alt+V to turn on/off the video. Video preview is by default
off to save CPU processing times.

¡¡

Tips:
* Press the title Select All will select all the chapters in all titles
for you. Accelerator key: Ctrl+A.
* You can edit name for any track/chapter by clicking at the grid for that
chapter. Accelerator key: F2.

2008-04-24 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Liz,

The new Yahoo mail page is inaccessible with Jaws, or any screen reader for
that matter.

You must return to the old version of the web mail page.

There should be a link on the page allowing you to do just that.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Message rules question

2008-04-18 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Jack,

I think the best bet for message rules is the subject line. I don't think
your method is full proof.

Consider that if a person belongs to a large number of lists, and,
invariably, you will get talk on another list about another list, and
suddenly you find that other list's messages in the other list's folder, and
you lose track unless you're listening to the subject line.

Another example I can give you, is that the Blind Computing list makes
reference to the Jaws Users list in the footer, so what's to stop those
messages from going into my Jaws users folder?

You would literally have to be very attentive to the subject lines each and
every message.

I can cite more examples, but I think you get the idea.

In variably, most, if not all e-mail lists, will have the name of the list,
or some derivative in the subject line, so I think that would be your best
bet, as talk of another list in the subject line is very rare indeed.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Making a selection in a combo box

2008-04-17 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Lisa,

In addition to what has already been said, in my experience, I find it best,
after you've used the alt+arrow keys to open the combo box, then arrowed
down to your selection, and, upon reaching your choice, it's best to close
the combo box with alt+up arrow, as this will complete the selection, and,
I'm assuming, will refresh the page to reflect your selection.

At that point, once the page refreshes, you can simply press the letter C
key for the combo box, and Jaws will take you straight to the combo box,
assuming that it's the only one on the page, if it isn't, you can just keep
pressing the letter C until you get to the combo box you just made the
selection in and continue filling out the form at that point.

I do this because sometimes the author of the webpage doesn't take us into
account, and the fact that we have to arrow through the selections so we can
hear what they are, so if we press tab to go to the next form field, the
combo box will sometimes not make the change we want, and stay on the
original selection, at which point, we have to go back to the combo box, and
redo the selection.

This way, I know it's made properly and I'm not putting my fate in the hands
of someone who failed to take us blind folks into account. Smile.

Re: [JAWS-Users] display driver update help needed

2008-04-08 Thread Victor Gouveia
HI Cher,

I have good news and bad news for you.

First, the good news...

Your problem can be fixed, and the best part is that once you fix that
problem, a great many other problems will be fixed.

The bad news?

You have to do a re-install and format of your drive.

My brother made the mistake of doing that, namely naming the local drive
another letter, other than C, and it completely didn't allow him to install
a bunch of other things, including Jaws and Zoom Text.

The major problem is that programs like Jaws and others, look for the
default of the C drive when it installs and access the various program
functions, so, if you don't have a C drive, you get a number of errors when
you go to run a program.

I should also point out that the Jaws Video Intercept doesn't ask you which
drive to install to, it will automatically install on the C drive, so if
there is no C drive, it isn't getting installed properly.

I'm sorry to have to be the bearer of bad tidings, but this is the reality
as I see it, and, as I see it was garnered through experience with this sort
of problem.

By the way, who was it that installed the system in the first place?

The reason I ask, is if it's a new computer, then you can take it back and
get them to install the OS and format the drive correctly.

If it isn't a new computer, then who did your last install, as they should
be able to re-install the entire works.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Question about where do drivers go after you downloadthem.

2008-04-03 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Albert,

Once you install the drivers, they will land on the directory responsible
for the product you installed it for.

For example, if you installed the drivers for Epson, they will go into the
Epson folder in your C or local disk drive.

Once that's done, in most cases, with third party software, you must
configure it to recognize the new drivers in that application's options or
settings for the device you wish to configure to work with that application.

In the case of Kurzweil or Open Book, and assuming that you've installed a
new driver for your Epson Scanner, once the driver is installed, you would
go into those programs, Kurzweil and Open Book, and go into the scanner
configuration dialog boxes and choose the scanner drivers you just
installed.

In those two cases, however, you should be choosing the TWAIN drivers to be
recognized.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws is reading a strange window

2008-04-03 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Hussein,

Have you noticed any applications in your start menu, or system tray that
sounds similar to what the open window is called?

If you do, check out the program's options, and also check the MSCONFIG file
to see if there are any programs that sound similar to the program giving
you the problem.

If you see this program, try unchecking it from start up, and see if that
fixes the problem.

There are two things to make sure of before doing this.

First, try doing a Google search for such a program, and see if it details
what the program is, and if there's a current fix for it, or if others are
facing the same types of problems you are.

Obviously, sending out for help on this list is a very good first step.
Smile.

Secondly, if you are going to uncheck an item from start up, make sure you
create a restore point so you can role your system back should things go
wrong, especially since you're working without sight.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Internet explorer.

2008-04-03 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Sue,

Have you found out if Microsoft has a fix for this?

You can do this if a dialog box pops up after you send the error report and
click the close button.

In most cases, there will be a dialog box which pops up afterward telling
that for more information, click the link below, which usually tends to be a
button labelled more details.

Entering on this button will take you to the Microsoft Error Reporting site,
which will sometimes give you fixes for such problems.

Let us know if that's the case.

[JAWS-Users] Interesting Demonstration on Window's Vista Narrator

2008-04-03 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Folks,

The below was gleaned from this week's top tech tidbits newsletter that I
receive every week.

Essentially it tells of an upcoming demonstration on Windows Vista's Narrator
and how it functions with today's major screen readers, those being Jaws,
Window Eyes and System Access To Go.

***Begin Article***

Mine will be the primary voice you will hear on Tek Talk on GMT Tuesday, 8
April at 00:00. We will discuss Windows Vista Speech Recognition: Microsoft's
Half-buried Treasure. There will be something here for users of all the major
screen readers, as I will discuss and demonstrate the pros and cons of using
Speech Recognition with JAWS, Window-Eyes, and System Access. As always, the
two-hour program will consist of a presentation/demonstration with plenty of
time for questions and discussion afterwards.

Re: [JAWS-Users] FW: AVG Anti-Virus

2008-03-30 Thread Victor Gouveia
Don't mean to be the ass here, but I think that people should stop
criticizing David's message to Grissoft, and send in their own messages.

In the time it took them to write a criticism about David's message, they
could have written their own message to Grissoft, and let them know that
David isn't the only visually impaired person using their products.

The fact is, there is strength in numbers, and the more of us out there
telling them we're going to take our money else where, the more they'll be
inclined to make the changes we are asking them to.

How many other programs out there that initially started off as Jaws
friendly, suddenly went the way of the dinosaur when their accessibility
with Jaws or other screen readers stopped?

What I'm trying to say is, it doesn't matter whether you use AVG or not,
you should be sending in your messages letting Grissoft know that their move
towards inaccessible products is not acceptable to the blind community, and
they are probably losing a great number of their clientele in the process.

It's this division in the ranks that hurts us as a community.

It hurt us with descriptive video on television, and now it's hurting us in
the software department as well.

Re: [JAWS-Users] cassette to MP3

2008-03-29 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Soo,

Depending on where you live, most electronic stores will sell you this cord.

As someone else mentioned, it's called a patch cord, but the actual name for
it is a 3.5mm to RCA cord.

Basically, one end of the patch cord has a typical headphone jack on the end
of it, while the other end of the line has two thicker ends, which consist
of a center pin, with a metal circle around the outside of the jack.

There are two of these plugs at that end, one for the left channel, and one
for the right channel.

The end with the two jacks plugs into any stereo with a line out, or any
electronic device with a audio out interface, and the other line plugs into
the line-in of your computer sound card.

As someone else told you, you'll have to experiment recording various test
files to see which volume you should set your line-in at on the volume
control, and what ever sound recorder you are using, should be configured to
record from the line-in source.

I should also mention that this is the standard for electronic equipment
which uses line out ports on the unit in North America, so someone else may
advise you if you live outside of North America.

VCR's, DVD players, bookshelf stereos and component stereos all use RCA
ports for the line in and out, hence my advising you to get the 3.5mm to RCA
patch cord.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws 7 and NVIDIA Video Intercept Error

2008-03-26 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Folks,

A friend of mine bought a new system, and installed her copy of Jaws7 on it.

She is now receiving a video intercept error, and cannot resolve the issue.

She has uninstalled the video intercept and re-installed it, but to no avail.

She is running Windows XP home, and using an NVIDIA G-Force or N-Force video
card.

Are there any fixes I can run, or anything I can resolve that can help her?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Moving folders

2008-03-26 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Patti,

The folder would be in your C:\documents and settings\Patti\favourites

If your user name is not Pattie, you would subtract the Pattie for what ever
username you have in that particular folder.

Once you've pasted the files in there, upon opening the favourites menu, all
your favourites that you pasted in that folder should be there.

Re: [JAWS-Users] recording problems on my hp laptop with vindows vista

2008-03-25 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Dinesh,

Have you turned off microphone boost in the sound properties?

This can often be the source of most external sound problems.

I would also confirm that the sound you are recording from is indeed the
microphone you have plugged in, and not some other microphone source.

An example I can illustrate is that I had an external microphone plugged
into my laptop one time, and was getting truly awful sound being recorded.

When I finally checked the sound source, it turned out that the microphone I
was using was the microphone that was on a digital camera I had plugged into
the USB port while I was downloading pictures from the camera.

Make sure you are recording with the line in, and not the microphone, and
make sure that you do a proper test of your microphone, and go to any
advanced properties where you see those particular buttons.

These properties can be found in your control panel, under sounds and audio
devices.

This is a multi-tab dialog box, and there are various tabs for speakers,
recording and stuff like that.

Let us know if this helps you or not, and if not, I'll try to do a more
in-depth message on how to check your audio settings.

Re: [JAWS-Users] looking for a software, where can I find

2008-03-24 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Carla,

I uploaded it for another list I'm on, and I've included the link to
download it from send space.

You can download the Creative Media Light software at the following link:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/f557p0

You can also get the scripts for the software at Brian's site, but I don't
know the exact address right now.

If you still need it, I'll look into it tomorrow for you.

[JAWS-Users] Question Re: GoldWave Scripts

2008-03-20 Thread Victor Gouveia
HI Folks,

I didn't see this come through to the list, so I thought I'd repost it just in
case.

I keep hearing the scripts for Jaws say that you can turn off the extra help
verbosity by pressing the plus key to turn them off, when ever I start GoldWave.

Obviously, this would be the plus key on a desktop keyboard, so what would
be the keystroke to shut off verbose descriptions on a laptop, using the
traditional laptop keyboard?

I have tried using the PC cursor and other possible ways to mimic the plus
key on a desktop, but to no avail.

Any ideas on how this can be accomplished on a laptop computer?

Hi Jitendra,

Thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for.

Frankly, I don't mind the grave key being used instead of the plus key, I
just needed to know what keystroke would do this.

I'm wondering if you'll be including a set of keystrokes for laptops in the
help files?

This would sure come in handy for those who use GoldWave on a laptop.

Any idea if this will happen?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Moving folders in OE

2008-03-16 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Patti,

My brother and I use this method all the time when moving Outlook Express
folders and e-mails to client's new computers.

It is really quite simple, and you may kick yourself for not thinking of it.
Smile.

In any case, you'll want to navigate to the following directory:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your user name\Local Settings\Application
Data\Identities\Big long file name\Microsoft\Outlook Express\

Keep in mind that the user name and big long filename will depend on your
own system and are different for each computer and user.

Once you've found this directory, copy it to a portable storage media, such
as a CD, USB stick, or portable hard drive, and keep it aside.

Once you've got it on that portable device, set it aside and do some
important maintenance on that second computer you want to place the old
files on.

The important maintenance is the complete updating of Outlook Express.

The reason behind making sure that OE is updated is that, presumably, your
old copy of OE was updated, so the new one should be also. This also refers
to security updates and program updates that may be available, necessary and
optional.

If this is already the case, navigate to the same location on the new
computer, and copy the file folder Out look Express to the same location,
making sure to overwrite the files that are already in there.

As has already been stated in another message, make sure your folder options
are set to show hidden files and folders, and do not go into the Outlook
Express folder, simply go as far as the Microsoft folder, and copy the
Outlook Express folder into that directory.

Once you run Outlook Express the folders and all your e-mail from the old
computer will be in their respective folders, and their hierarchy will still
be retained.

Please keep in mind that this process will not bring any of your message
rules or view settings along, so you will have to redo that part of it
again, but I think this is the simplest way of doing this, and, as I said,
this is the process we use when our clients want to back up their data from
a previous drive onto their new computers or drives.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Problems using Microsoft Excel with Jaws

2008-03-04 Thread Victor Gouveia
HI Ryan,

Speaking strictly from experience, any time I open an Excel sheet, this
message does come up, and I simply wait until Jaws starts telling me the row
and column I am on, at that point, I can simply go through the sheet with
the arrow keys.

In other words, a bit of patience goes a long way. Smile.

Just wait a bit once you hear that spoken message, and see if Jaws
eventually says what I mentioned above.

[JAWS-Users] New Jaws Friendly Recording Software for Skype Users

2008-03-03 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Folks,

Managed to glean this from another list, and thought some of you may be
interested.

***Original Message***

CallBurner: Finally, Fully Accessible Skype Call Recording is Here at Last!

By Darrell Shandrow

The people at Netralia, developers of the Skylook Skype call management and
recording application for Microsoft Outlook, have
recently released a new Skype call recording product that does not depend on
Outlook. The new CallBurner application enables
annotation and recording of all Skype calls while providing a clean, simple
user interface.

LINK:
http://www.callburner.com/

After learning of the existence of this new product, I downloaded a trial
copy of the software. While finding it reasonably usable
for basic call recording, I found the call detail window largely
inaccessible with any screen reader, including JAWS, System Access
and Window-Eyes. I promptly wrote a short note to the company's support
e-mail address requesting accessibility enhancements to
permit full use of CallBurner with screen reading software. On Thursday,
July 5, I was absolutely flabbergasted to receive a
response from the company's senior developer offering a beta copy of an
accessible version of the software for my testing! This
response came in less than three weeks of my initial request!

After downloading the test copy of CallBurner, I immediately began to put it
through its paces. After enabling Screen Reader
Compatibility in the Accessibility sub-menu of the program's System Tray
icon, I was instantly delighted to discover extensive
keyboard navigation, a tabbed Call Details dialogue box and full
accessibility without need of screen reader configuration or
scripts. Follow these steps to enable Screen Reader Compatibility after
downloading and installing CallBurner:

Minimize all running programs and focus on the Desktop by pressing Left
Windows+M.

Press JAWS Key+F11, Modifier+F11 (System Access) or Insert+S (Window-Eyes)
to open the System Tray menu.

Down arrow to CallBurner and press enter to right click its System Tray
icon.

Press enter on the Accessibility sub-menu.

Press enter on Screen Reader Compatibility. This is the only option
currently found in the Accessibility sub-menu.

The following dialogue box is shown: Screen Reader Compatibility is now
turned ON. NOTE: You need to restart CallBurner for this
change to become effective.

Press enter on the OK button to accept the change.

Press JAWS Key+F11, Modifier+F11 (System Access) or Insert+S (Window-Eyes)
to return to the System Tray menu.

Down arrow to CallBurner and press enter to right click its System Tray
icon.

Up arrow to the Quit option and press enter.

Press the Left Windows key or CTRL+Escape to open the Start menu.

Press p to open the All Programs menu.

Down arrow to CallBurner and press enter to open its sub-menu.

Press enter on CallBurner to start the program. The Call Details window
opens, presenting a tabbed dialogue box that delivers a
fully accessible user interface to all CallBurner functions.

Press the End key to move to the Help tab.

Press the Tab key once to select Browse On-Line Help and press enter to open
CallBurner's documentation in a typical web browser
window. This help will serve to get you started with CallBurner in short
order.

The latest version of CallBurner, incorporating the Screen Reader
Compatibility enhancement, has been made available as of
Saturday, July 7, 2007. I highly recommend CallBurner to anyone, blind or
sighted, who needs to record Skype calls. The ability and
willingness of the developers to make their software accessible in less than
three weeks of such a request demonstrates the
commitment of this company to high quality, reliable customer service and
technical support. We should all send a quick note of
thanks to the CallBurner Team expressing our appreciation for their prompt
attention to our accessibility needs and encouraging
their developers to continue the excellent work in this area for all their
software.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 9.0 and the windows xp pro log on screen

2008-02-28 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Don,

If I'm not mistaken, doesn't Jaws 9 allow for two sets of start ups?

When I installed the demo version on my wife's computer, it asked me if I
wanted to start Jaws at the log on screen, and at windows start up.

Mind you, my wife is running Vista business edition on her laptop, and all I
wanted to do was install the demo version so I could diagnose any problems
that might come up from time to time, and to install some extra programs
that didn't come with her laptop when we bought it, but I distinctly
remember there being two different questions that Jaws asked me when I was
configuring the program.

The first was whether I wanted Jaws to run at the log on screen, followed by
the second question of whether I wanted Jaws to run when windows started up.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Backing out of files

2008-02-16 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Tim,

You don't have to view folders in web view for it to work, as the alt+left
and right arrow keys are keyboard shortcuts for the back and forward buttons
on the toolbar. This is also a Windows shortcut key, not Jaws specific.

If you don't believe me, press alt+V to go to the view menu, then arrow down
to the option called go to, which is a sub-menu.

In that sub-menu are the options to go back and to go forward, which are the
alt+left and right arrows respectively.

This is equivalent to pressing the back and forward buttons on the toolbar
that a sighted person would see just below the file menu.

If you are on the sixty-fifth folder down in the list, and you enter on it,
only to find that it's not the folder you wanted, pressing alt+left arrow
takes you back to the sixty-fifth folder in the list.

Likewise, if you come out of the sixty-fifth folder, only to see that you've
forgotten to check something, you can press the right arrow to go back into
the folder, and land on the last file you looked at or had highlighted.

As has been stated, some programs interfere with this function, and, in some
cases, improper configuration of settings on the computer in question will
also interfere with this function.

I was going over someone's computer settings the other day, and once we had
finished configuring her system to work optimally with Jaws, she found that
her alt+left and right arrows functioned again, after not functioning for
the longest time.

Hope this helps.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS on thumb drives

2008-02-14 Thread Victor Gouveia
If someone already has Jaws authorized on the host computer, why would one
go to the trouble of plugging in the thumb drive in the first place.

Why not just use the version of Jaws already present on the host computer?

The only reason I could see for using your own thumb drive version of Jaws
is if the host computer's version of Jaws is not working, or there are sound
difficulties not allowing for the host computer to use it's own Jaws, but if
that's the case, wouldn't those same circumstances affect the thumb drive's
version of Jaws also?

Just trying to wade through my common sense.

As has already been stated, once you highlight the word you want to spell
check, you would place the cursor at the beginning of the word, holding down
the shift key, right arrow until you've highlighted the entire word. Once
it's highlighted, press the F7 key, and the spell checker will check that
word. Once it's done spellchecking that word, it will ask you if you want
to check the rest of the document, at which point, you should select the no
button.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Laptop Advice

2008-02-04 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Tony,

I beg to differ with you on that score regarding Toshiba laptops not having
a home and end key.

There are a series of four keys on the right of the keyboard, they are the
home, page up, page down and end key respectively.

I'm typing this on a Toshiba laptop right now.

I have never seen a laptop without a home and end key, so I'm wondering what
your statement is based on?

I also forgot to add that if the laptop doesn't have a home and end key,
then it must not have the page up and down keys also.

This would essentially make the laptop very hard to use, and, indeed,
shorten it's lifespan on the market, since most people are looking at
portability without sacrificing performance.

Hi Carlene,

I owned a Sony Vaio PCG-FRV25 just over a year ago, and it had a home and
end key.

Did you actually have someone sighted look at the keyboard for you and tell
you that there wasn't a home or end key.

As I recall, those two keys were on the right side of the keyboard, just
after the enter keys, along that vertical axis.

Do you not have these extra keys?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Top and Bottom Edge Alert Question

2008-01-27 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Carlene,

While I can appreciate you getting tired, the fact is, when I am going
through my e-mail, Jaws says bottom when I reach the end of the new e-mails
I have to read.

My friend enjoys this fact, and she and I agree, that when you are going
through 400 e-mails, you want to know when you've reached the end of the
list, instead of Jaws just stopping and not saying anything.

We have checked her verbosity settings, and they indicate that top and
bottom edge alerts are set to sound, but again, there is no sound or speech
when the bottom of the e-mail list is reached. Victor

Re: [JAWS-Users] o.t: downgrading to windows XP sp1

2008-01-25 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Dennis,

When you open up the add/remove programs dialog box, make sure the checkbox
to show windows updates is checked, at which point, you can simply look for
it in the list of programs.

Windows will automatically tell you whether that update can be uninstalled
or not.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Top and Bottom Edge Alert Question

Hi Rosemarie,

Why is it not a good idea to have the preview pane on?

If it relates to viruses or spyware, then there are ways to mitigate those
issues. If it relates to something I may not know about, could you let us
know why?

I have been using the preview pane ever since I started with e-mail and
Outlook Express, and have never had an issue.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Copying files from various directories

2008-01-23 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi David,

In his defence he was pretty specific.

At least that's my take on it.

I understood that he was trying to append to the clipboard files instead of
text, where he could take files from multiple folders and place them/copy
them into one folder.

Was I wrong about his intention?

[JAWS-Users] Top and Bottom Edge Alert Question

2008-01-23 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Folks,

A Friend of mine asked me how Jaws could tell her that she is at the top or
bottom of the messages list in Outlook Express.

I have tried the insert+V command with her, but it doesn't seem to have fixed
the problem.

I thought about the possibility that something may need to be tweaked in the
configuration manager, but for the life of me, I can't find where to check that
setting in there.

As I said, I have tried the insert+V command, and the customary verbosity
dialog box pops up, and under top and bottom edge alert it states with sound.

Once I press the close button, it's like Jaws was never modified, and I still
don't know where to check this option in the configuration manager.

She is using Jaws 9.0.519 on a laptop running Windows XP, Outlook Express 6 and
Internet Explorer 6.

If it means anything, when she reads the message body, she does get a sound at
the end of the message, but never in the message list.

Another thing I should mention is that she is reading her messages with the
preview pain turned on, and indeed, reading her message via the preview pane,
not going in and opening the message individually.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Yahoo Messenger archive error

2008-01-18 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Cesar,

I have also gotten messages of this type, but they are not associated with
any particular application.

If you run a good Spyware detection application and run a registry cleaner,
like Reg Scrub XP or Reg Clean, it will fix the problem.

Hope this helps.

[JAWS-Users] Installing Jaws 8 on Windows Vista Business Edition

2008-01-14 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi All,

I have installed a demo version of Jaws 8 on my wife's new Windows Vista
Toshiba laptop running the business edition. Once the install is done, I get a
video intercept error when I install the video intercept.

I get a dialog box asking me what I want to do, and the only choice I get with
Jaws is the second one, which says install video intercept and restart the
computer, however, when I press the spacebar on the execute button, I get the
error message that the DC something or other has an error, and the only choice
is the ok button.

Is there a fix for this?

I have confirmed that I am running the 32 bit version of Vista, and I am logged
on as an administrator.

Am I to assume that the only way I can do this is by using Narrator?

Also, how can I do this if I have to shut down Jaws in order to be able to use
Narrator properly.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

There is also a plug-in for Winamp that will allow Winamp to play Real Audio

Re: [JAWS-Users] Winamp Question

2008-01-05 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Donny,

Try the F11 key.

That is the keystroke most commonly associated with making an application's
video full screen.

It's the same in Windows Media Player and QuickTime.

To revert the application back to normal viewing, you would press the F11
key again.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws and computer games

2008-01-05 Thread Victor Gouveia
There is a game called Word Target, released by BG Games.

It's made for both blind individuals and low-vision.

The game uses the Windows SAPI TTS, and you play it by taking the nine
letter word given, and creating as many words as you can using those nine
letters, but containing the letter in the center of the grid.

It's quite addictive and free.
