I don’t think that you can see the photos if you are not on Facebook. The
name of the Facebook page is International Organization of Lace, Inc. not
IOLI. This is a source of confusion.
I understand that there are people who don’t want to be on Facebook. But
one can establish an identity on Facebook using a pseudonym and just using
it to visit other Facebook pages. It is very easy to post on, so it has
become a bit of a universal form of communication, for better or worse.

[lace] Convention photos

2019-07-31 Thread Devon Thein
For those who follow the International Organization of Lace, Inc. Facebook
page, a very complete series of photos has been posted by myself as
Facebook editor. The photo of the bobbin lace speed competition in which
contestants were given the challenge of making the snake book mark on a
watermelon using carrots as bobbins went viral and has received 138,000
views, assisting in raising the follows on the page by about 750.
The Tatting challenge sadistically required people to tat with soft
silicone fish skeletons.
Entertainment included a sing along of Bing Crosby’s greatest hits since
Bing Crosby was from Spokane.
Photos of the display, teachers showcase and all the vendors with their
appealing wares can be seen on the Facebook page.

[lace] Convention posting.

2017-07-06 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti.
Arlene, Many thanks for that posting about the Convention Venue. I get the
digest, so I only got it just now.
It was Most informative, and will be very useful. Unless the next Digest
comes though quickly, I will have left here before it arrives.

We are arriving on Wednesday evening, and wondering about whether the Shuttle
bus or a taxi would be best. We will be SO tired after the 15 hour flight to
LA, and, after about 4 hours there, we get another 5 hours flight to
Philadelphia. We will leave home by 5AM on Wednesday to get to the Airport
in time for Checking in etc for our early morning flight.

It is the International Date Line , and Numerous time zone changes that
confuse our bodies!! We won’t know which way is Up, by the time we get
there.!!! :)

I am really looking forward to meeting up with everyone again, - and
Especially the Arachne Lunch!

RE: [lace] Convention-public day

2017-04-20 Thread devonthein
I just ran across an inquiry from Sherry about the public day at the
convention in my spam box. I hope someone has already answered this. She
writes: “When is the day when the someone like me
can come to look at the displays, do some shopping and meet follow lacers? Is
there such a thing?”
The answer is that Wednesday, July 19th is the public day. One may buy a
mini-registration, $25 for member, $30 for non-members. This will allow you to
enter the vending room and display rooms and to rub shoulders with the
participants who may be demonstrating in the hotel public rooms. There is also
a class, “Introduction to Bobbin lace” taught by Kim Czerwinski that one
can sign up for. It is a 6 hour class running from 9:30-4:30 with a break for
lunch.

[lace] Convention table showcase

2016-05-27 Thread Sally Jenkins
I think an Arachne table at the IOLI convention is a great idea. *Because
of the Arachne list*, I located and subsequently met a lacemaker during my
trip to Bulgaria, and I wrote a lengthy article about her that appeared in
the most recent IOLI Bulletin.

(Followup on that: the Bulletin editor sent me an extra copy, which I
mailed to Bulgaria; I saw a photo on the Bulgarians' SediankaTA Facebook
page with several of their local craftspeople looking at that issue of the
Bulletin!)

It's been fun to participate in the ornament and bookmark exchanges too,
and some representative photos from those would make a nice display at the
convention.

I think the idea of an Arachne table is a wonderful idea. Thanks to
the group, I was able to find both of my lace teachers, and find a
lace group to join.

Thanks to the group I have met fellow lace makers from Australia (we
were both in England at the same time) and South Africa (he was
visiting New York and thanks to Devon we were able to visit the lace
collection of the Metropolitan).

Of course I have also met lace makers from several different states, too.

There is a connection through this group and you cannot get from Facebook.

Hello Janice and everyone

If the Teacher Showcase room has internet access, people can sign up on the
spot if they have portable devices, visiting www.arachne.com and following
the links to the majordomo addy etc. Whether or not access at the time, you
could have the arachne url on a placard and/or small papers to hand out.
Might be fun to have the several arachne-@ lace patterns printed for
display? Carolina has one, and we have Tamara's, posted to flickr album
Arachne 20th Anniversary. I think you helped her with the upload :)

[lace] Convention Teacher Showcase - Arachne handout

2016-05-21 Thread L. E. Weiss
I think that's a great idea, Janice, and one topic might be the various
exchanges over the years. They are fun in the short term and, in some
cases, have led to long-term and long-distance connections. Perhaps we can
offer some testimonials about how the listserve has contributed to our lace
making?(I'll never forget asking about instructions for a pattern about
9 years ago and getting 8 helpful and generous replies from 3 countries
within about 30 minutes.)Some of the comments can make it into the
handout and maybe others can be displayed on the table in large font format
with an accompanying photo or lace piece.

I have been approached about Arachne having a table at the Teacher Showcase
so that we can inform lacemakers about Arachne.  Not sure if we would have

What are your thoughts on that subject?  I don't mind being one of the people
at the table but would need help advising people as it is a long time since I
signed on to Arachne.  If you like the idea and want to give me some
information that should appear on the flier, let me know what it should

up with everyone again. This was my 5th convention.

The Exhibition room was great. There was a long display, under glass, along
one wall of old lace, - and one piece just blew me away - It was a small
(about 4 inch square) of rose point, and I could not believe how fine the
thread was, and how small the motifs, and raised work. There were rings on
the bars joining the work, and each ring had 6 or more Venetian picots -
which were so tine they could hardly be seen. How Ever did they work them? I
cannot imagine how the lacemaker could see, let alone have a needle fine
enough to work the lace.

[lace] Convention

2014-08-13 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
I am home, now after a visit to USA, - both to family, and to convention,.

Lace in both places, but you will be interested in convention, so ...

I took the gold silver Early Laces, with Gil Dye. It was wonderful - but
stretched my brain quite a bit as we worked without any pricking, and then,
later on with just a 5mm plain graph paper as guide lines! Challenging, I
can assure you And with metallic threads that have a mind of their own!

The big co-incidence is that I bought metallic thread from the Tatting
Corner, over there, on line, and had it sent to my daughter to save on
overseas postage (so spend a couple of thousand dollars in air fares to
collect it personally!! :) ) - and Monday morning went to class and
chose 'my spot for the week' next to a total stranger. Well, it turned out
she spends time helping the lady in the Tatting Corner shop! What are the
odds of that happening when there were a couple of hundred people at
Convention, - and I picked the right one to sit next to!

I did some shopping with the vendors - I had pre-ordered some books etc for
a couple of good friends over here. I would not get to Lace Days if they did
not collect me, and bring me home afterwards, so carrying a few books home
for them was fine with me!

The bus tour on Wednesday was a very long trip, but I enjoyed it all. We
visited The Lace Museum, and Lacis. I was amazed at some of the collection
in the Museum. Wonderful;, and what an Aladdin's Cave Lacis is!!!

It was a most enjoyable week, - meeting up with old friends, and making
some new ones. Thank you to all who made this a great week.

Regards from Liz in Melbourne, Oz.

2014-08-09 Thread ADELE SHAAK
Hi Lorelei:

Ulrike Voelcker found a piece of lace in the French town of Barjac, and could
not identify it as any previously known type of lace. She described the lace
(and the finding of it) in detail in an evening program at the IOLI conference
in Salt Lake City last year. She deconstructed that piece of lace,
identifying the techniques used, and has written a book about it, with
patterns. That is the book that should appear this fall.

She showed the book pages at the Teacher's Showcase here in Sacramento. As
Nicole says, she will be teaching Barjac this fall as well as at the IOLI
conference in Coralville next July.

[lace] Lace Convention flights

2013-05-02 Thread Lyn Bailey
The big problem with getting off the plane at a midpoint stop is that your
checkthrough luggage will not get off the plane with you. I can't imagine
an attendee at a lace convention making do with only what's in her carryon.
Those things don't necessarily arise to the surface when first considered.
But there it is.

Lyn in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, USA, where the sun is supposed to shine for
the weekend, which is good, because I'm camping near the Maryland Sheep and
Wool, taking a class in Estonian knitted lace, and camping at a state park
for 3 nights. More money for yarn that way. Yum

If you arrange with the hotel, they will hold packages for you. I used to
travel quite a lot and i just shipped stuffs ahead that i could not fit on
carry-on. I did this before 9/11 so i don't know why it would not work
now. even your pillow can go on ahead. just a thought.

[lace] Convention in Aug in St Paul?

2012-03-15 Thread Amy OMalley

Hello Cearbhael,
The official convention website is located here:
http://www.minnlacesociety.org/IOLI/index.html
You can download a full copy of the registration information that was
published in the winter IOLI bulletin as well as the registration form.

We hope you will be able to attend the full convention, but if that isn't
going to work out for you, there are several small classes being offered.
For a small fee, we are also offering 2 public days (Wednesday or Saturday)
with full access to the sales room. We will have a great collection of lace
vendors. If you come on Wednesday, you have the added benefit of access to
the display room and 3 lace-related presentations.

If you are going to register for classes, please double check the class
page on the website before you send it in as we have marked the classes
that we know are full at this point. There are others that are very close,
so make sure to put your 2nd and 3rd choices on the form.

Please let me know if you have any questions, and we hope to see you in
August!

[lace-chat] Manicures. What to wear to the next lace convention banquet.....??

2010-03-18 Thread Jean Nathan
I've seen this done with lace and didn't think much of it. I don't like
nails decorated unless the decoration is perfect. I can't abide chipped nail
varnish, bits missed round the edges of the nails, bits of nail varnish on
the skin, etc. I saw the stuck-on lace being demonstrated and the person
doing it just couldn't make the lace fit exactly it was either too small or
over to one side, or the cut threads stuck up after it had been applied.

The lace doesn't have to fit the whole nail, it could be just the top half
or with a diagonal cut, and I appreciate that it's extremely difficult to
cut a small piece of lace to exactly fit where you want it. Perhaps I'm
being too picky, but if it can't be done well, then for me - don't to it at
all.

[lace] Convention pin and free patterns

2009-01-15 Thread Janice Blair
Hi All,
For those of you that would like to see the convention pin I raffled this
week, you can go to my website www.jblace.com.  Look under the Tape and other
lace gallery where you can read about the design I also did for the convention
giftbox.

In the Pattern Gallery you can see the patterns for both pieces of lace.
Thanks to my DD who managed to change my website before I go away for a long
weekend in the sun (hopefully).

Janice

p.s.  Driving home today my car registered the temperature at -7 deg.F and
that was without the windchill so I am looking forward to some warmth.

[lace] convention classes

2008-01-23 Thread Janice Blair
I have been reading my backlog of digests after having a short winter break in
the sun. Got home to at least 4 of snow to clear and freezing temperatures.

I saw an email from Clay passing on more information on the class being taught
by Susan Wenzel. The description had to be abbreviated in the Bulletin
magazine due to space constraints, but if you go to the website you will be
able to read the full descriptions of the classes as supplied by the teachers.
There is also a list of supplies needed for each class where we have been given
them, and some have photos of the laces to be taught or types of lace. There
is a Bio page so you might be able to see what your teacher looks like. I
think we are still waiting for more photos to arrive. We hope this website
gives you more help in making those important decisions than just the Bulletin
can.

Also check out the Important Pages for up to date details and forms that might
be required for registration.

http://www.landoflincolnlacemakers.com/home

The Fun Stuff page has patterns that can be downloaded for making floral
donations to the convention, but we are willing to accept any style of flower
and any color you want to make. The About Us page has a picture of the
postcard we handed out last summer. We did try to do a solemn photo similar to
the old postcards you find, but we all preferred a happy photo.

If you are thinking about attending IOLI convention this year please check out
the website for more information. Thanks,

Janice

Re: [lace] convention classes

2008-01-23 Thread Dmt11home
I think it is splendid that the website is being used to expand on the
information for the convention, since the space issue in the Bulletin, had
formerly, put us in the position of having to make a rather expensive decision
based
on a very short description of a class.

Along the same lines, I would find it interesting, and possibly a
tie-breaker when planning how to spend my discretionary money and time, to know
 who the
speakers were going to be at Convention and what they were going to speak
about. For some reason it seems to be traditional to never announce this.
Similarly, the entertainment at the banquet seems to be something in the nature
 of
a national secret or special surprise, whereas if people knew in advance
what it was going to be, they could be anticipating it, studying up on it, and
even deciding to attend the convention on the basis of it. Now that we have
the internet, why not let people know about the speakers? I often find the
speakers to be the most interesting part of the convention.

Devon suggested that the website should include details of speakers at the
IOLI convention.

I would find love to see photographs on all the pages describing the lace
classes (not just some of them), so that I could see what each teacher
proposed teaching. This would help me to make a much more informed decision
than just text. I appreciate that some teachers off a wide choice of
patterns for various skill levels, but a sample of what they are offering
would be better than no pictures

[lace] Convention 2008 News (DP)

2007-12-31 Thread Janice Blair
Hi Lacemakers,
Shortly the IOLI Bulletin will be making its way in the mail, but as co-chair
of the host group, Land of Lincoln Lacemakers, I wanted to tell you that we
have discovered a boo-boo in the printed information about our convention in
Rockford in August 2008.

The hotel rate is quoted as $135/night for up to four occupants of a bedroom.
We realised today that the wrong figure was sent to IOLI, and that in fact the
cost of a room is $123/night for up to four occupants. Thank goodness it is in
your favor but please get the word out to all your lacemaking friends. I will
take the blame as I sent in the info for the registration form. I looked at
the hotel contract for the info, but did not turn the page to see the reduced
rate that we negotiated!! The hotel started our bargaining at $154/night so I
think we did good for our registrants. Remember to quote Land of Lincoln when
you book your room to get the $123 rate and this year you will be able to send
your registration in on Valentines Day. Hopefully we will be able to inform the
teachers and registrants a little earlier so they can make travel plans.

Our website will be up and running soon so you might get a sneak preview before
the magazine arrives in your mailbox. I will put that announcement on Arachne
as soon as I hear from my webmistress.

Re: [lace] Convention, Money

2006-07-18 Thread Gail Young
Hello All
I don't think that you need to worry too much about currency. We Canadians are
very
accustomed to dealing with international guests, and especially those from
south of the
border. Most places will accept U.S. dollars cash. The merchant converts it
into
Canadian dollars and provides change in Canadian dollars. You may not get as
good an
exchange rate as from the bank. Canadian banks will also gladly covert U.S.
dollars
into Canadian dollars and their exchange rate is usually pretty good.

Most merchants are small and do not accept credit cards, but I am certain that
they will
be happy to accept U.S. dollars and then convert to Canadian dollars. We must,
by law,
provide change in Canadian dollars as that is the legal tender in Canada.

Trillium Bobbin Lace accepts Visa and MasterCard as well as debit cards. I
don't,
however, know if my machine accepts debit cards from banks outside of Canada.
I will
verify before the conference.

As others have suggested, it is best to shop around as exchange rates can vary.
 To find
the official exchange rate go to the Bank of Canada.

http://www.bankofcanada.ca/en/rates/exchform.html

This is the official central bank rate, you will pay a little more than this,
but it
will give you an idea.

I hope that this helps. Canadian dollars are always appreciated, but not
essential.

I'm looking forward to meeting you in Montreal!

want Cdn $. Some places may accept US $, but it will be at the rate of

Re: [lace] Convention, Money

2006-07-17 Thread Shere'e

I travel quite a bit and have found that it is best to see how the US
dollar is doing vs the currency of the country you are traveling to
in this case the CDN $ . If the US dollar is strong and the rates
are going in your favor then it is best to wait however most airport
currency exchange places can have fairly high service fees.

If it is not going in your favor then you are best to go to someplace
local to you to exchange it now. Many banks offer this for a fairly
reasonable rate. Some even have a buy-back program where they will
exchange back to US $ from the currency you purchased at no extra
charge up to the amount you originally purchased.

You may also want to consider getting a prepaid visa/MasterCard in the
local currency. That way you know exactly how much money you have and
have the security of not carrying around a ton of cash. This is what
I do for paying at restaurants and most shopping that I have to do. I
can then carry a minimum in cash so if I get robbed I am out much
less. Most Prepaid cards can be replaced just like traveler's checks.

exchange they want to charge, and not necessarily the best.

Cdn dealers at Convention might be willing to take US $ but not guaranteed.

2006-07-17 Thread Cindy Rusak

Dear Spiders travelling to Montreal,

I'm not sure what kind of exchange rate you will get at the airport but
most of those services have a fee associated with them. You should check
the conditions of your debit card. I made a purchase last week in Canada
with my debit card and the rate was great and we didn't get charged a fee
for it, whereas if I had used our credit card we wouldn't have gotten
anywhere near as good a rate and there would have been a fee included in
the exchange as well. I think we are only allowed a couple of these a
month before fees are added. It may be worth using an ATM once you get to
Montreal and making a large withdrawal to cover day to day expenses.

Have fun in Montreal,

While the idea to go to an ATM and get cash each day does seem
reasonable, the experience of many IOLI attendees is that the cash cow
runs dry very quickly anywhere within walking distance of the hotel, and
you're left with no recourse!! So my advice is to take what you think
you'll need for the first couple of days in Canadian dollars, (and add
more for the vendor's room if you can give yourself permission...) use
your VISA or Mastercard whenever you can, and then make it your first
order of business on day one to find more resources for conversion.
OR... check with a travel agent or your bank about the pre-paid cards
(although these won't work in the vendor's area, in some cases - and it
might be your luck that the item you MUST have needs to be paid by
Canadian dollars!!)

I won't be in Montreal this year... I'm still basking in the glow of
Denver. But I must say that I'm envious of all who are going to be
there! I'm looking forward to hearing all about it when everyone is
home, safe and sound!! Safe traveling for you all, and a wonderful week
to you!!

Just a warning--some banks charge a hefty fee. Make sure you check the
exchange rate before going to the bank, so you can compare their rate
to the internet one.

Another place to exchange is at the Auto Club (AAA). They don't do all
countries, but I got British pounds there, so they probably have
Canadian money, too.

Yes, quite. I fully agree. Jan Beaney and Jean Littlejohn's classes tend to
take one outside one's comfort zone as it is, but observers on top of that
would be awful. Their classes are great and highly to be recommended, but

[lace] convention report!

2005-08-09 Thread Weronika Patena
The convention was really great! Everything was so exciting. I spent lots of
money in the
salesroom: a 14 Simon Toustou pillow, $150 worth of Binche bobbins in
different woods, some
beautiful spliced wood continental bobbins from Lacy Susan, all sorts of
stuff... Then I had to
wind all these bobbins before class.

I took wire lace with Carolyn Regnier, which was fun and relaxing - wire lace
really isn't hard once
you get the basics. I also got to look into Lenka's wire class one day, and
it's really surprising
how different methods they use - Carolyn uses normal doubleheaded heavy bobbins
with a single hitch,
and Lenka uses very small bobbins with hooks and no hitch. They use different
wire gauges too. So
now I get to figure out which method I like best...

My afternoon class was Intermediate/Advanced Beds with Holly van Sciver. Great
class! It's such
fun to just work a complicated piece from a pricking and figure out how to do
it while working.
Holly's great at just sitting down with a pricking or the actual lace on a
pillow and coming up with
ways of doing it - whatever works, no set-in-stone methods. I love taking
classes with her. I
spent almost all of my free time working on my Lester cuff to get to the flower
in the middle before
the end of classes, and I did it!
Running between two classes with my big block pillow and stand was a bit
frantic, but doable, and
having a block pillow does help.

Meeting everyone was great too, although I'm not very good at being social.
Maybe it'll be easier
next time when I'll already know some people. Still, great meeting you all!
The Arachne lunch and
the banquet were fun. The teacher's showcase was great too - actually a nice
way for me to remember
people, since I frequently remember lace pieces better than faces (it's
happened a few times at
classes that I wasn't sure whether I've met someone before until I looked at
their lace pillow and
recognized the piece G). I finally got to see some of Cathy's Chrysanthemum
pieces that she's
apparently been hiding from me for months G, and Liz Ligeti's wonderful Beds
pieces, and Louise
Colgan's beautiful Milanese, and everything... I got to meet Lenka Suchanek,
who didn't have a
table, but showed me some of her pieces for sale - wonderful designs. And she
liked my pendant!
I'm so proud of myself G.

The one part of the convention I wasn't happy with was the Flying W Ranch trip,
which I shouldn't
have signed up for - I wish the organizers had told us in the description that
the ranch is 1.5
hours driving away (I get carsick) and that the dinner didn't have a vegetarian
option. Ah well, I
brought my little travel pillow on the bus and survived fine.

When going back home, I managed to get my travel pillow with a lace piece on it
through security, so
I worked on it in the airport and on the plane, and impressed some people,
including a lady who
asked me to email her some information on how she could get started on bobbin
lace.

Now I have a lot of pictures to put on my website...
http://vole.stanford.edu/images/bobbin_lace is my lace picture album (I'm not
sure where the IOLI
pictures will go in there exactly, but they shouldn't be hard to find, just
look through the
folders), and my journal is at http://vole.stanford.edu/weronika, click on
Journal under BOBBIN
LACE. I just finished the journal entry, which is a bit longer than this email
(go ahead and read
it if you want more details), and I'm going to put the pictures online soon.
There should also be
pictures of my lace pieces in the My lace section today or tomorrow.

Two requests for anyone looking at my pictures:
1. I'm not sure who the people on some of my pictures are, or who some of the
lace or merchandise
belongs too - if you see a picture with a name like someones_lace or
maybe_Withof or
someone_working and you happen to know who/what it is, please let me know.
2. The picture website is basically just my picture album - I use it to look at
my own pictures and
to show them to friends, just like a personal picture album. I put all of my
pictures there, and I
sometimes forget that it isn't really a personal album and it's out on the
Internet... So if you
see some pictures there of you or your lace, and you'd like me to take them
off, please let me know.
Same thing if you see any other pictures you think shouldn't be there. I am
trying to ask people
whether I can take pictures, but I still tend to forget to ask them whether I
can put them online -
sorry about that.

the expense.

I think that Anita already clarified this point... her friend realized
that she would enjoy the class and since there was room left in the class,
got permission from the teacher to join the class in the afternoons only
(since she was already in a morning class...) AND she paid for her
participation in the afternoon part of the class. The only thing unusual
about this arrangement is that she was able to arrange everything after she
got to Denver - usually classes are filled by this time!

Hi Dagmar,

First of all - congratulations! May you both have long and happy lives
together! And fancy being able to combine a honeymoon trip with an
evening at the Convention - how clever you are ...

About the lack of pieces in the competition. I didn't visit the
convention, so I don't know about any of the other lace-makers, but I am
very rarely able to put a piece into local (even not-so-local) competitions.
Along with other teachers of both bobbin lace and fine handicrafts, I am
kept reasonably busy a lot of the time, designing the patterns for the
pupils, making them up to make sure they work and don't have any hidden
traps for the unwary, so I don't make an awful lot of lace for my own
enjoyment. And usually, whatever lace I make seems to be outside the scope
of whatever competition we hold - you can bet that what I have done or am
doing is not what is wanted for the competition! In the UK, we generally
only know what the competition is when we apply for the tickets - usually a
couple of months in advance, so that sometimes isn't time enough to find the
right pattern, and get the lace completed.

There is also the other excuse - sheer inertia! Or thinking that whatever
we have won't be good enough. Or even not being able to find the wretched
piece, because we have put it away (too) safely ...

Carol - in Suffolk UK.

I couldn't possibly justify going to the entire convention and so I at
least persuaded my newly-wed husband, that Colorado is the perfect place for
Honeymoon.

Is 25 pieces in the competition a lot? and how come if there is so many
IOLI members there weren't more lacemakers willing to compete??

[lace] Convention query

2005-08-08 Thread Laceandbits
In her excellent report on the convention, JoAnne made the following comment
.and got to sit in on the Lier Lace Class with Greet Rome-Verbeylen in
the afternoon.

Does this mean that she was not actually taking part in the class, but was
there as an observer?

I have heard of this practise from one of our leading British embroiderery
teachers, Jean Littlejohn, but from what she said, I had hoped it would never
be
taken up in lace circles.

The way she described it was that her students were situated at tables and
chairs around her forming a horseshoe or ring. Outside them was another row
(or even two in one place) of observers who she also had to acknowledge in
so
far as all her teaching had to be with sufficient volume for everyone to
hear, and all her demonstrations had to be on a large, extravagent scale so
those
sitting further back could get their reduced-payment money's worth. She
said it was enormously more tiring than her normal class size of 18 to 20, and
also very claustrophobic to have this other set of people just watching and
scribbling frantic notes, particularly when she was trying to do one-to-one or
small group teaching within the group.

I think she said it was a practise prevalent in the west of England (but I
could be wrong on the place, so please don't shoot me down in flames), the
logic
being they don't get many teachers prepared to travel that far. She hadn't
even been asked beforehand if she minded and as the tickets had been sold it
was a case of going ahead or leaving a lot of very disappointed people.
However, she says she wouldn't do it again.

So, please reassure me that this was nothing like that, and that lace classes
at conventions aren't going down that route.

I'm not an IOLI official, but my experience is NO. The rule that is
printed in the conference handbook is No visiters in class, and the classes
are limited to 10 or 12 or whatever the teacher and conference agree
on. The exception is the official photographer, and any conference
official with conference business, who can stop by whenever needed.

The lucky person who had special teacher's permission to be in the room is
the rare exception, and a bit envied by me -- who would have liked to get a
peek at the Liers process.

The only 'peeking' I got to do during class time was when I had to pass
another group in order to visit the ladies room. Due to the smallness of a
few class rooms, some classes moved to the large ballroom and shared the
space. Thus, a few people got a very quick glimpse of the project in
process on some pillows -- but just a short tantelizing glimpse.

We had a better chance of seeing what others were doing by touring the
halls and lobby during non class hours, and looking at the projects on all
the pillows in view. I figure that anyone who is working in the public
areas of the hotel has given permission for visitors to take a peek.

Don't expect to have 'observers' at an IOLI class.

Is 25 pieces in the competition a lot? and how come if there is so many IOLI
members there weren't more lacemakers willing to compete??

Overall I was very happy with the convention and it was really nice to connect
some names with their faces.

Hoping to be at the next convention for a whole week

Hi. Glad you got to stop by. What day did you come? Was it perhaps on

was not crowded at all. I spent an enjoyable two hours just browsing and

there was a crowd every time I had a chance to go in.

As I understand it, this was the second largest attended convention. I was
told there were 388 registered people, teachers included. The exhibit
people were overjoyed with the entries. It might have been the largest
group of competition entries ever. The Denver people would have to report
on the exact statistics.

As to why there were 'only' 25 entries.I can't tell you, except for my
missing one. I didn't get it done on time. I think most of the other
members of my lace group are a bit shy about entering in anything other
than county and state fairs. We'll have to work on that.

[lace] Convention vendors?

Hello --

I have yet another question about the IOLI convention, if you all don't mind.
(Hope I'm not wearing out my welcome here, so soon!)

Is there a list of vendors who will be attending the Denver convention
available somewhere or from someone? I would be interested in seeing it, if
soStill debating whether or not to make the drive to Denver.

Thanks again very much for all of your gracious help, both on- and off-list.

[lace] Convention - bring sunscreen!

Gentle Spiders-

One more thing for convention, if y'all could help spread the news. We forgot
to mention that if you're planning on being outside at all, you should bring
and liberally smear yourself regularly with a Heavy Duty sunscreen. They
probably sell it in the hotel giftshop, but I'm sure it's cheaper to bring it
yourself. The altitude combined with our bright, glorious sunshine can really
wreak havoc on our tender, ladylike, virtuous skins, and we wouldn't want any
ow-y sunburns to hinder the GREAT FUN YOU'RE GOING TO HAVE!!!

 Hi Vasna and everyone

I will try to 'whip up' a couple of bookmarks for you, although I have
much else to do - and you know that saying, so many laces, so little
time...At this point, if you are short 200 -my free advice is for you to
have a Plan B, something you can assemble more quickly than it takes the
average lacemaker to make a bookmark (whatever that might be - is this
helping?) that is equal to a handmade bookmark, not too expensive to make
and will save last minute fretting.

For instance, colour photocopy some really nice, ambitious bookmarks or
other laces, paste the colour copies to stiff card, attach a fancy tassel.
The tassel can mimic the finish to a bookmark; a jazzy passementerie of
thread and beads; or in the form of a 'spangle' of beads.

Free idea, use it if you like.

[lace] Convention help-bookmarks

2005-04-28 Thread Vasna Zago
Gentle Spiders-

Greetings from Colorado and the Rocky Mountain Lace Guild! As the IOLI
convention this summer draws nearer, we've realized we have bit off more than
we can chew, so to speak. My superpowers (see sig line) don't include whipping
up 200 handmade pieces of lace. I can shoot laserbeams from my eyes, tho, when
I feel like it.

Anyway, we are trying to get enough lace bookmarks for everyone to have one,
which is about 400. We have 200 so far, and now we're getting nervous that we
won't have enough.

We were just going to make a few to give as door prizes, but then the insidious
School of Complicated Design reared its ugly head, and we hit upon the idea to
make enough bookmarks for everyone to have one! More lace! Lace for everyone!
Unfortunately, most of our members have actually attended the School for
Complicated Design (doilies? Why not make HOUSE COZIES?) and graduated with
distinction, so it's all difficult being us, she whined.

Resultingly, I am asking for help in making bookmarks, if any Arachnids would
like to turn his or her nimble fingers to the task.

The bookmarks need to be all lace, any kind of lace - bobbin, needle, tatting,
etc. They do NOT need to be in any sleeves. We've got tons of the Springett
snake, so we're currently looking for something different. Let your imagination
run wild! White, colored, whatever.

If you would like to help, please make as maaany book marks as you like.

All this talk about conventions has made me green with envy.how us Aussies

My husband was born in Bristol and we had the experience in 1998 to come for a
5 week visit. Stayed with his unlce and travelled around. I got a map before we
left, borrowed a friends U.K. lace magazine and mapped out all the towns I
wanted to visit !! Needles to say, many, many $$ or pounds later and a bag
full of bobbins, I was one happy little lacemaker. It was good as they dont
give you excess baggage.

Our neighbours have put their house up for sale and comparing what they will
get and what me might get, then take the morgage out of that..i could
attend both the U.S. and U.K. conventions with spending money...but have a
husband and 2 children in a tent at homeoh well to dream.. could always win

So to all those attending have a great time and spend, spend spend...and
remember all us that could not make it wishing we could.

[lace] convention comments

2004-01-20 Thread Vasna Zago
Dear Friends-
Greetings from snowy Colorado! It's been a while since I was on this list,
but I just wanted to pop in and say howdy! I hope the new year is treating
everyone well.
What has interested me recently is the flurry of e-mails about this years
IOLI convention. Being in the throes of planning the 2005 convention,
I have watched the plans for the 2004 convention unfold with great interest.
I admire the Keystone Lacers for trying something different. I think it
was a bold and courageous venture to revamp the convention and risk the
kind of criticism they have been receiving here. I hope their convention
is a tremendous success. Each and every one of you should hope the same.
Planning a convention is an exciting and horrible task. :-
Balancing budgetary constraints with participant want is tricky at best.
We would like it very much to be all about the lace, to have
100 teachers and 500 participants come and stay where they want,
offer only the kinds of classes YOU in particular would like to take,
and give away registrations and meals and gifts galore. Unfortunately,
it doesn't work that way. Always, ALWAYS, there is a fear of losing money.
Budget drives convention planning. A convention budget runs about a quarter
of a million dollars, and usually it is only a dozen (or several dozen,
if you're lucky) people with little experience but a lot of enthusiasm
who are trying to please lace makers across the world for
one week in the summer.
Historically, we have had it very easy with regard to registration
fees for IOLI conventions. At most conventions nowadays, registration
fees run between $200-$300. We are lucky to only be paying $150-ish!
Everything you get at convention comes out of this registration fee.
All your gifts, your meals, the evening programs, and even things you
don't think about, like security in the vending room, and copying costs
for the packets you get from your teacher, etc. etc., all comes out
of this one little fee.
Also, it is commonplace now to have a commuter fee. People who attend
the convention but do not stay in the convention hotel are literally
costing the host group HUNDREDS of dollars. The same holds true when
people get their rooms through CheapRoomsRUs.Com The hotel
(and thus the host group) does not capture those rooms nights,
and it costs the host group money. Therefore, it is best for the
host group if you stay in the convention hotel and give them the room
nights needed to help make a successful convention.
It is not just up to the host group to make a successful convention.
It is also up to YOU, the participants. My plea today is to remind
people that the Keystone Lacers are doing the best they can under
difficult circumstances.
They are hoping for your support. Please give it to them.

Regards and love,

Vasna Zago

[lace] Convention planning

2004-01-18 Thread Ruth Budge
Whilst you're all thinking about convention planning, I'd like to tell you
about another aspect of this year's IOLI organisation.

About 14 months ago, an American member suggested that I should put my name
forward as a standby teacher at this convention. A teacher who had been asked
for a very specialised subject was known to have serious and ongoing health
problems, and it was thought a backup would be a wise thing.

I contacted the relevant person and explained what had been suggested to me -
she agreed it sounded a good idea to have a backup and forwarded me the forms
to fill in.

What I received was a six-page questionnaire - easy ones included are you
currently a member of the IOLI?; List dates and class subjects if you've
been an instructor at previous conventions; List, by order of preference, no
more than five techniques/mediums in which you teach.

Then the forms moved onto questions such as: Write a biographical statement
AND attach a current resume outlining your lace or fiber-related activities;
Tell us about yourself and your lace-related/textile experience. How many
years have you been teaching organised clases (i.e. conventions, conferences,
workshops etc., planned by an organised group)? In what lace, needlework or
related organisation do you hold membership or have certification?.

A slide, lecture or other presentation was required from the tutor to help in
the selection process, as well as 2 - 3 photos/slides of current work
pertaining to their proposal for promotional purposes.

And finally, a paper copy of the proposal description and biographical
statement AND the same on disk.

Oh! and I forgot! Names of two referees if you have not taught at an IOLI
Convention - difficult for a non-American, because anyone who could vouch for
my credentials in this field would themselves be unknown to the Keystone Lacers
and there would themselves need to be checked out.

My conservative estimate of the time it would take for me to fill in the form
was probably 3 days - in reality it'd probably take longer - by the time I'd
prepared all the necessary submissions.

I'm *not* criticising the committee for checking out the credentials of
would-be tutors, especially those not known to them, but I am critical of the
way it was done. Even tutors at previous IOLI conventions assured me that
there has never been such an intensive application form for tutors before, and
nearly gave up as a result.

At the time, in addition to upheavals in my private life such as my Father's
health dramatically deteriorating, I was preparing to teach the same course for
another Guild, and I became thoroughly discouraged by the amount of time and
effort required just to apply to be a *standby* tutor, so decided not to
bother.

It felt to me as if the organising committee had a member who was used to
finding executive staff for a large million-dollar company, and hadn't been
able to adapt to playing a part in what is, after all, a group of amateurs
enjoying a hobby. And that last comment is in no way downplaying how large
that group may be, how many people attend the IOLI convention, how much
organisation the convention takes or how much financial juggling is required to
make the convention budget balance.

I know just how much work goes into organising these things - I've been
involved in similar projects myself. But part of the skill in such
organisation is to make everyone feel welcome to take part, in whatever
capacity, not to make people feel as if they've got to jump through so many
hoops that they give up before even trying.

Whilst you're all thinking about convention planning, I'd

 What I received was a six-page questionnaire -,..
My conservative estimate of the time it would take for me

was probably 3 days - in reality it'd probably take
longer - by the time I'd
 prepared all the necessary submissions
Even tutors at previous IOLI conventions assured me that
there has never been such an intensive application form
for tutors before, and
nearly gave up as a result..

I'd like to comment on that. It is my understanding that
the reason that we don't see a lot of our familiar favorite
teachers is that (a) they didn't have the time to complete
the forms,
(b) they assumed that having taught at IOLI for decades, it
was well known who they were and what they taught, or (c)
they were offended by the requirement and threw it in the
trash. I don't blame them for any of the above -
particularly if they're Honorary Members of IOLI who were
given that honor on the basis of their contributions to
lacemaking!! This begs the question - did the committee
members even know who they were?

It would be a matter of curiosity for me to know the
credentials of the conference committee members with regard
to their experience in IOLI conventions specifically, and
their awareness of the needs and wishes of the members of
IOLI in general. Given the scrutiny they chose to apply to
potential teachers, they surely wouldn't object to
publicizing that information, if asked.

Having said that (yes, I'm underwhelmed by the
organization of this year's convention), I again stress that
IOLI is about the organization, not the committee that
organized this year's event. Whatever we do, we must be
careful not to damage the structure of the organization. It
seems to me there is still time for the organizers to issue
a mea culpa and modify some things before the March 1
deadline. But I'm not holding my breath.

If the organizers have to shell out huge amounts of money to
cover shortfalls in revenue, then they will have the proof
that their ideas weren't so hot after all. And I, for one,
would be very upset if I knew that IOLI had to be liable for
that... If the committee works without the consent or
advice of the leadership, they should bear the burden of
risk. If loads of young, employed, schedule-challenged
lacemakers swarm to Harrisburg, we'll all cheer and embrace
them! Either way, I think that organizers of the future
will have a clear understanding of the needs and preferences
of the members who patronize the conventions. I'm confident
that IOLI leadership will make the changes which, as we
will learn from this experience, must be made. I'm also
confident that other groups who consider hosting IOLI in the
future will continue to be open to the suggestions and
lessons learned by other groups - as has been the practice
for so many years prior to this one.

Re: [lace] Convention planning-interesting

2004-01-18 Thread Dmt11home
I am sorry that Ruth was deterred by the paper work involved in the current
convention because I would like to meet her. But now, I am even more eager to
see how this convention turns out.
As workshop chairman of a local group for many years I had ample opportunity
to observe how a gifted and talented teacher could give a class that was a
total disaster by the simple expedient of refusing to provide a detailed class
description or timely materials list. The presence in the class of people who
wouldn't have taken the class if they had known what it really was and the
experience of fighting the wrong materials invariably resulted in calls to string
up the workshop organizer, myself.
In my time, I have run down the hall of the national convention pleading with
a teacher to give me a materials list for a class due to start 2 days after
the convention, only to be treated as an annoying pest. I have actually settled
myself in a chair in a teacher's home and refused to leave until she produced
a class description. I have had all the materials for an entire class fed
exed to myself when the materials list was given out 3 days in advance of a class
and required a very unusual thread carried by only one dealer and she on the
west coast. There wasn't time to call everyone in the class to tell them the
materials, let alone have them each order them. Perhaps the requirements to
produce so much paper were designed to weed out those people who will not produce
paper!
Part of this dialogue, unfortunately, is that the teachers aren't paid enough
to make them care whether they are not asked to teach and the students don't
want to pay more when they calculate that half the classes they take are a
complete waste of time and money to to some avoidable oversight.

[lace] convention discussion

2004-01-17 Thread Bev Walker
Hi all and yes, T - the discussion would be better placed in its own IOLI
Forum - for the benefit of the IOLI itself - if such a forum could be
possible.

[it is a plan of mine to set up such a forum for the Canadian lacemakers
 - it is do-able, but needs time and a computer geek]

Planning a large gathering of lacemakers is never simple. ack, it's a job
and a half for everyone taking part in the organizing.

The venue, whether a commercial or non-profit facility [like a university]
is often a deciding factor in many things - for instance the management's
policy on vendors, and rules for same, event insurance, wheelchair
accessibility, room convenience (classroom or accommodation), lighting...
This all will vary depending on the venue and can create headaches in the
conference planning - but some things can be cast in stone, or at least in
a policy manual, and at the very least, in a list written by the previous
organizers to help the next group.

That's all I'm going to say here and now. My picket is hanging up outside
if anyone wants to consult. LOL

advantage of a special Fiber Frenzy week of Kids College at a very
reasonable cost.

PA Trivia: Beginning October 1st and continuing through February 1st, three
new PA Trivia questions will appear for five days each month (October's will
be extended to the 10th). All correct entries will be entered into a random
drawing each month for a $35 gift certificate towards Lace Convention 2004
Registration. You may enter as often as you wish, but you will only be
eligible to win once during the next five months.

And last, but not least, through the generous contributions of several
lacemakers and teachers, a pattern booklet of original bobbin lace and
tatting patterns will be published later in October as a fundraising
activity to underwrite convention expenses. The cost of the booklet is $20,
plus $2 s/h. For ordering information, please go to Sales Fundraising

pattern packet, and cross-stitch designs for sale which we hope will
encourage you to participate in the Hex Sign Challenge.

We are really looking forward to welcoming you to Harrisburg next August and
we hope you are planning now to join us!!

Sincerely,
Deb Jaimee Bender, Chairpersons

Dear Lacemakers,

What a curriculum! So many from our family are on the faculty -
congratulations to you all.

Because people overseas who are coming to the U.S. may not be familiar with
it, I want to recommend the Winterthur Tour on Wednesday. Winterthur is the
foremost decorative arts museum in the U.S., built by Henry Francis DuPont. If
you are interested, I recommend you visit their website, and use the selection
choices at the top of the first page - especially About Winterthur and
Research Resources Academic Programs. If I were 40 years younger, I'd
investigate the educational possibilities presented by this fine institution!

Two years ago, I attended a Winterthur special study program. At that time,
they had at least a dozen 18th Century whitework (needlelace fillings)
samplers on exhibit -- mostly borrowed. I've never seen so many of this type in one
place before. It was wonderful.

Sounds tempting. It's really unfortunate that when the Convention is,
for once, within my driving distance, I won't be able to attend... :(

In addition to the annual IOLI-sponsored Lace Challenge, Hex Sign
(www.internationaloldlacers.org),
So, can anyone tell me what's going on with the IOLI website? I've been
knocking on that particular door for the past week, and th result I get
is always the same -- Error; 500 can't reach the site. I know it's not
my browser -- I've had no trouble with any other site. I thought,
maybe, my bookmark has gone off, but the link above didn't change
anything; it's still Erroneous in the 500 field...

[lace] Victoria Lace Convention

2003-07-05 Thread Miriam Gidron
Hi spiders,

I have arrived back home after a wonderful vacation in the USA and Canada.

I started off in Chicago visiting my son and family and continued to Ottawa
just after Memorial Day. There I stayed with a childhood friend of mine.
She and Malvary arranged a lovely small lace gathering for me at Malvary's
place . We were just five yet we managed to talk a lot and compare ideas
about lace and lace books. I was just watching the lacemakers as I didn't
have my lace pillow with me. The afternoon finished with several of us
going out to dinner. Thank you again Malvary it was great.

From Ottawa I flew to Vancouver where I stayed with Maureen. I know that
Maureen has written to Arachne about this visit and the lace convention, so
I won't dwell on all the particulars. I haven't read her e-mal to the list
because I was unsubscribed for all the period. I had a wonderful time at
Maureen's who took a lot of time to show me the sites of Richmond,
Vancouver and surrounding.
Amongst our short stops was a visit to Lenka. It was great seeing Lenka
again, it was a very short visit since she was getting very busy for her
fashion lace show which was held the next day. Lenka invited us to the
show, which was just beautiful. It was a bit too hot on that afternoon,
even for me, but nevertheless every moment was enjoyed. The wire lace was
beautiful, it is so special and made with so much imagination. Just great. .

While in Vancouver I had to go bead-shopping, since I had no idea what I
had to bring with me for my workshop at the convention. Bead shopping is
great but usually you buy a lot more than you need and are tempted by a lot
of glittering little things.

We went over to Vancouver Island , got there early had lunch in Sidney and
then Maureen drove me around on the side roads to Victoria. I have been to
Victoria about ten years ago but saw more of the touristic sites. We had a
lovely cluster at the university where we were joined by Mimi and Marjory.
I knew Mimi only by name since we have been making together a tatted round
robin
when I first joined arachne some time in the mid '90ies. Mimi even brought
the doily with her to show me the end result. Thank you Mimi.

I took the beaded amulet course and enjoyed every minute of it. We started
with making cords in different ways and then went on to the making of the
amulets. We did so much in just two and a half days. The whole convention
was so well organized and the organizers put so much work into every
detail. Our badges were hand made bobbin lace our little tote bags were
sewn by members of the group. There were daily little lotteries and
goodies many of them hand made. I was presented with a bobbin since I
arrived from the furthest part of the world. It was a cute thought.

Bev, Margaret, Esther and all the others (sorry if I didn't memorize all
your names) put in so much work . Thank you all for the most enjoyable time
I had at the convention.

After the convention , I stayed a few more days with Janet Goodacre. We
have been corresponding for about ten years and have never met before.
Janet makes most beautiful Bedfordshire lace and she wears everything. She
showed me Sooke and the area. But then, after two days it was time to go
again. Maureen picked me up and we headed back to Vancouver. Next day I
left for Los Angeles to visit some very good Israeli friends of mine.

With this the lacey part of my trip ended. I went with my friends to Las
Vegas for two days, they gambled a bit while I enjoyed watching the people
and taking in the different sites of the beautiful hotels. It was time to
pack again my bags and fly back to Chicago to stay with my son for another
week and watch and enjoy my 10 month old grandson.

All good things come to am end one day and for me it happened a few days
before my return to Israel when I got a call from my son that there was a
fire in my house. It is still very unclear to me how the airconditioner
short circuited, but it did. Luckily it set the burglar alarm off and my
neighbors who have a key rushed over to see what was happening and right
away started to put out the fire. Apparently it was out before the fire
brigade turned up. Luckily the damage was rather small, some of my lace
doilies are gone, though my big lace pictures survived beautifully. My
youngest son supervised the the cleaning (a team was sent in by the
insurance company). I was talking to him just as they were putting all my
table clothes into a machine at the laundromat. I just managed to have him
pick out my filet lace table cloth, which my grandmother made, before it
went into the machine. That is a very special table cloth which has
pictures of different animals in it.
At the time when Elaine Merritt was writing her article about animals in
lace I have sent her pictures of it. I have some Orvis and hope to clean it
with it, though I don't thing is has a lot of soot on it. The big problem
is the soot everywheres. Most of it was cleaned but here

[lace] Convention meeting of Arachneans - per Convention Co-Chair

2003-07-01 Thread Jeriames
Dear Lacemakers and the Volunteer who has offered to work on this project:

Following is a letter from Lee Daly - so we can all see what she recommends:

Thanks, Jeri

There are times when I get caught up with lace-chat and lace-digest but this
month will not be one of them.

The regional meetings are scheduled right after the opening reception and
sometimes the Arachne's meet after that. The reception is on the top floor of
the hotel and at least, the Eastern region will congregate there (depending upon
region attendee count, possibly more). After that, the room is open and you
may meet there. I think on at least one occasion, the Arachnes met at the same
time. I would appreciate if you at least introduced yourselves to the regional
director before congregating.

As for meals, we can put a reserved sign on 2 tables for the breakfast, and
2 for the luncheon. Perhaps someone would like to make an Arachne
symbol/sign/indicator so it is known who can sit there? I would prefer not at the
banquet, though. IOLI board officers need a reserved space then and I think it
makes others uncomfortable to see too many reserved tables. By then, you should
have become acquainted with the other Arachnes to plan to sit together, anyway.

Feel free to post this for me. Sometime after August, I expect to be caught
up again.

[lace] Convention meeting of Arachneans

2003-06-28 Thread Jeriames
Dear Lacemakers who will attend Convention,

I am sending this information update to the list, so that lots and lots of
correspondence can be avoided, especially on the overseas servers..

A volunteer to coordinate and work on this project has written to me. She
has offered to write to the Arachne list in a few days, after she has sorted out
the details with the Convention Committee.

Kind regards,
