Dear Joy,

Thank you for posting your picture of the Arachne Pin! My computer had
"issues" last week, and since retrieving if from the "Geek Squad", I've
had to rediscover ways to get to stuff... which is thankfully there.
One thing I still haven't mastered (again) is getting control of my

So, you picture of the pin is welcome!

Thanks again, and welcome back

I have just rejoined after finally noticing that there

off the wall.

---

The first few messages that arrived appeared to be
castigating lurkers for lurking -- I've always thought
lurking a virtue (and find it a virtue that is very
difficult to cultivate). Imagine a list where all thousand
of us said "Me too" to every post!

Every performance needs an audience; it's a pity there is no on-line
way to sit quiet and look attentive.

The situation was clarified when I read more messages, but I
still want to say that Arachne should be a place where those
who have something to say feel free to say it, and those who
have nothing to say feel free to say *that*.

We are all of us one or the other at times.

---

Nearly everybody has a use for a square of lint-free cotton
cloth. Big R and other box stores sell a large assortment
of them, and I've made a lot of "furoshikis" -- 22" square
if I make them from 45" fabric, but 24" square when that can
be cut economically. Burrito-wrapping a sock-in-progress
with its yarn and needles keeps things from getting dirty
and tangled in my bag, and keeping a furoshiki or bandanna
on my lap while waiting for something makes putting the work
away when called a quick grab-and-stuff.

I intend to iron one of the plain black furoshikis today.
The dress I want to wear on Palm Sunday is very low in the
neck -- not only is this neckline drafty, it looks
ridiculous. A black neck scarf takes care of both problems.

In a pinch, a 24" bandanna can be tied over my ears to keep
them warm. (My head scarves are at least a yard square.)

(Both bandanna sizes can be thought of as about a third of a
meter, and a yard is almost a meter.)

---

Long before 9/11, I ran a round robin (a letter forwarded
from one reader to the next, with each recipient removing
his old contribution and adding a new one: it was how we
managed before e-mail made mailing lists possible.) The
package nearly always failed to return if sent across a
national border.

---

I looked up "piccalille" and "peccadillo" in the Compact
Oxford English Dictionary. All quotes & spelling possibly
inaccurate -- I needed both my sewing glasses and the
magnifier that came with the O.E.D. to read the entry, so
I'm not checking anything.

"Piccalille" started out meaning a cutwork edging, then
transferred to the collars and ruffs so edged, and ended up
as a stiff support for a ruff!

"Peccadillo" is a diminutive of the latin word for "sin",
and completely unrelated to "piccalille".

Me speculating: it seems obvious that "pick" and "pike" and
"piccador" share an ancestor, since a piccador is one who
pokes with a pike.

Re: [lace-chat] Rock throwing

2012-01-01 Thread Clay Blackwell
While my first reaction is just as both of you say, my instinct is that
(1) exposing the victims to the delinquents who maimed them is cruel and
counter-productive for them, and (2) seeing pain and death over and over
will desensitize a person eventually, and they may become more hardened
in the process.

Some years ago, there was actually an experimental program (here in the
US, I believe), in which criminals who had caused a death were made to
observe an autopsy. They mostly became violently ill, but if I recall,
there was no evidence that this changed their attitudes about moral
decisions.

I think this is one reason so many eBay vendors choose the Flate-Rate
Priority mail. You figure out which container the item requires, and
you know how much the shipping will be. For a tiny little bobbin, the
lowest possible rate in Flate-Rate would be $4.95 (I think it's still
that... maybe 5.95 now?) So yes, it's expensive. But OTOH, if you can
fit two or three books into the next size up, and it ships all the way
across the country, you may have a bargain rate.

Re: [lace-chat] Belgium

2011-02-02 Thread Clay Blackwell
I spent two weeks in Belgium in September of last year, and can attest
to the fact that there is something to be seen anywhere she finds
herself!! While Belgium is a relatively small country, one could still
spend a day or more in each place, just exploring all there is to be
seen. So it would be helpful for us to know specifically where she will
be going.

For the Lacemaker, of course, Brugge is the place to be. This is where
the Kantcentrum is located, (and may be in their new location by
then...) along with numerous shops which provide supplies for
lacemakers. Brugge is also a tourist city, and people day-trip in from
the coastal areas where they are taking their holidays, so it is
bustling until later in September.

Brussels has a wealth of things to see, lace related. Specifically, the
Costume and Lace Museum is fantastic. Unfortunately, the lace
collection in the Royal Museum has been closed down permanently to make
room for other things that seem to draw more tourists. Of course, like
Brugges, Brussels has a "Lace Shop" on nearly corner. The lace in these
shops is mostly Chinese-made (but sport the label, "hand-made") or
machine made, but virtually all of these shops have collections of
"real" lace which one can see if interested (some shops don't keep it
out in view). The "real" lace is extremely expensive. I found a piece
which was made from a pattern set which I have, and which -
coincidentally - I was working on at the time, and it was priced at 950
Euros. I was satisfied with that price, but questioned whether I would
accept such a small amount for the work that was required for that piece.

Some of my most memorable days were spent exploring the countryside
dotted with small towns and farms and castles. There weren't many
sightings of lace in these areas, but I came away with a deep affection
for the country, and for my friend in Belgium who was my tourguide!

I'm envious that your friend will be going there! I would advise that
she invest is a travel guide of Belgium, and map out her agenda well in
advance. Anticipation is half the fun!!

I'm not aware of any customs like this in the area I live in the US

is for children to make (the "old days") or buy valentines to share with

have stopped this activity in the interest of cultural sensitivity. But
after-school programs and church programs still carry on the tradition.

My guess is that this refers to a "zibellino", (plural "zibellini"),
which was a fashion accessory for the very rich. The word lends
itself to be understood as "sable", but the fur itself might be
something else, such as marten. The fur was worn over the arm or
shoulder of a woman.

Renaissance furriers could preserver the skin, but had to replace the
head and little feet with gold, enamelled and bejewelled pieces. I
think its use may have been restricted to upper class women by the
various sumptuary laws of different countries.

In that period, the animal was also a fertility symbol, which might
have some significance in your friend's story. I understand that
there is a portrait of Countess Livia da Porto in the Walters Gallery
in Baltimore which shows her with one. Because of the fertility
reference, art historians have speculated she might have been pregnant
when the painting was done, although she had two children already.
(Her daughter Porzia is pictured with her mother; her husband and son
are in another painting.)

There is an article here, with some more links:-
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zibellino
and a search on "sibellini" will throw up lots of links to images.

The article mentions the alternative name of "flea-fur": I don't know
the origin of this, but it seems unlikely. The aristocratic women
with such items would be unlikely to advertise any problem with
personal hygiene. (Yes, I know all about fleas and the Black Death,
but look at the death rates for the different classes to see who had
fleas and who didn't!) Also, any flea would be more attracted to the
nearest warm body - that is, meal - than to any cold, dead, tanned fur
piece.

I'd be interested to know the title and author of your friend's book.

We had to replace a 10 - 15 year old dishwasher three or four years ago,

highly rated by Consumer Reports. It claimed to be energy-star, and to
be ultra-quiet. It actually cleans dishes better than any dishwasher
I've ever used. However, I can't really trust the energy-star rating,
since this thing seems to run for over an hour... maybe even closer to
two! And, the longer we've owned it, the more we hear the noise.
Evidently, the insulation is degrading. Still, we have not had (knock
on wood!) any mechanical failures with it, and are pleased...
especially with how spotless the dishes are. (And I now use those "all
in one" capsules made by Cascade).

Subject: [lace-chat] Has anyone bought a good dishwasher lately

We seem to have offended the appliance gods, since all our appliances are
dying at once. I have been poring over consumer reports, and internet
reviews of dishwashers and I am now terrified of buying one that either bursts
into flames or does not clean the dishes. It would appear that recent
advances in energy and water savings in the US have rendered dishwashers less
effective in their primary purpose. Also, there is a micro-processor in every
appliance made in the US, and the micro-processors break when they get hot,
which seems to be quite likely and quite common in a dishwasher or oven,
leading to expensive repairs. I have just replaced my oven with a GE Profile
model, and I almost had a coronary when I was told by the installer that
I could expect 5-8 years of service from it. The appliances that are being
replaced are thirty years old, and it was not my intention to have to
replace all major appliances twice a decade.
Since many of the people who are reporting their appliance experiences on
the internet are people who are having the worst possible experiences, which
skews the information, I thought I should ask the list if there is anyone
who has had a good or bad experience with a dishwasher purchased in the
last 5 years or so. How I long for my old style appliances that lasted
forever, but that is now a bygone era. What is the best dishwasher brand now, I

wonder.

Re: [lace-chat] Cell phones

2010-10-22 Thread Clay Blackwell
Internet connection here is done via cable in many instances. This is
what provides the high-speed connection for us, and comes in on a line
which used to provide television programming (that is now provided by
satellite service). In some parts of the city, there is a blazing high
speed connection available through FIOS - fiber optics - but that is
also the phone line. There are other ways that internet signals can be
transmitted (3G, for example), but they're not available everywhere.

Jean wrote...

As far as I know for most people here even home wireless broadband
connections are via a landline with a wireless hub inside the home -
at least everyone I know has that. There are many areas, such as
motorway service stations and our local park where a wireless service
is available, probably in the universities as well, but I don't know
of anyone who has a broadband connection at home who hasn't got a
landline.

I think I understand the attraction of texting... although I personally
hate it and don't have a text plan. You can sit in a deadly boring
meeting and text with the object of your affections for hours without
disturbing anyone... especially if you sit in the back, alone. I
suspect that on some college campuses, there is more texting going on
during lectures than note-taking. You can text in public without the
people around you hearing what you're "saying". And text-ers have
developed a sophisticated short-hand which means they can say what they
need to say in very few keystrokes... So, I'm too old to change my
stripes, but at least I can understand why they do it. Neither of my
adult children would feel dressed and ready to face the world if they
didn't have their smart phones with text-messaging in their pockets.
And this mom doesn't pay their phone bill any more - they do!!

When young people live alone, or share an apartment with another single
person, a land phone is not necessary since their cell phone is with
them all the time. And if their roomie's phone rings, no one has to
wonder who should answer the phone.

One thing I am bewildered by is how often I see married couples
communicating with each other via Facebook. Hello? If you got off the
computer, you could say it in person and it would be even nicer!!!

her boyfriend have a hard wired phone in their apartments. Instead they
have their Iphones with them always. Since I am on a "family plan" with my
daughter, in which the second phone only costs $10 more a month, the cost is
split over the two phones. (Although I bear 100% of the cost, because that
is what mom's do.) The only fly in the ointment is that she has to have an
additional monthly texting plan. I am not sophisticated enough to understand
why, when you can send an email on your phone, you also need to text,
unless it is to communicate with people who don't have email on their phones.
Dare I dream that we could drop this in the next contract negotiation?
Interestingly, my daughter usually calls me while she is walking from work
to her next destination. The phone allows her to take this otherwise
unproductive time and use it to keep in touch with Mom.

The other machine was known as Banda. Spirit in the machine removed a

But the machine we printed our newsletters on was something more
"modern". It actually had black ink. The drum of the machine had a pad
that was saturated (from within) with a thick ink. The "stencil" was
clipped onto the machine and then the drum was rotated several times to
prime it. After a couple of rotations, the backing paper was peeled
off, and the printing began. It was possible to save a stencil by
re-applying the backing to the stencil before removing it.

As I recall, when this first came up for discussion (not necessarily on

orts of brightly colored fibers were put out for the birds, and then put

issue is that naturally occurring fibers are safe, and naturally
occuring colors are safer than anything dyed when used within the
fiber's natural environment.

will choose stuff to decorate their nests such as silver foil or

So it doesn't really matter if you put orts out for the birds - if
they don't consider it suitable for their nest, they won't use it.

Some of my friends call it a "personal tropical vacation".

And... re the HRT, quite a few years ago it was determined that staying
on HRT for a long time increased the chance of cancer, so most doctors
in the US encourage you to ride it out... it will usually go away. I
went through "surgical menapause" when I was 48 and had a complete
hysterectomy (including the ovaries, as my Mom died from Ovarian
Cancer). I was started on HRT, but stopped after reading the reports
about it. Initially after that, I had some trouble with the
flashes/flushes, but eventually they subsided.

Greetings, Lacemakers!

I just wanted to report to you that I spent this past weekend with my
daughter and her family. My grandson, Tanner, had just brought home a
big pile of postcards from all over the world! So many of you were
willing to send a postcard to him at his school, and they came from all
over the world! The entire class enjoyed it when another one came in
from somewhere far away! It gave them all an opportunity to study
another place on the globe.

To all of you who took the time to send a postcard - thank you so much!
It made my grandson feel very special, and it provided a very good
learning experience for his entire class.

Re: [lace-chat] Re: dom in paris/french onion soup

2009-10-27 Thread Clay Blackwell

Well, Devon... I may be out on the street with you...

I have used the same "recipe" for years, and one of the reasons I love
it is that it can be made in less than 15 minutes and on a cold, rainy
night, it's a great supper...

I cut up about a half an onion and saute it in plenty of butter in a
saucepan. While that's happening, I boil a cup of water in the
microwave and drop in a bullion cube and let it dissolve. Then I put a
can of beef consomme into the onions and add the broth. This makes
enough for two bowls of soup.

I put seasoned croutons into individual bowls and pour the soup over the
croutons. Top with cheese, sprinkle with a tad of paprika and pop under
the broiler until the cheese is bubbly.

Done... It's really good, and so easy. The seasoning in the croutons
is perfect, the consomme makes it rich, and the soup is as good as most
I've had... although I confess that I've never had it in Paris.

I tend to be better about Lace UFOs than other kinds... I have several
quilt-tops that are completed, but need to be quilted, for example. I
have a four or five knitting projects in the "current" knitting basket

because they tie up pillows and bobbins... if I'm not happy enough with
something to work it to the end, I cut it off and move on.

I have two projects on pillows at the moment... one is Binche and takes
all the concentration I can muster, and the other is a 's Gravensmoer
scarf, which is something I can do in my sleep now, after doing nearly
52 inches of it. When I've worked the Binche until my brain hurts, then
the 's G is a relaxing alternative!

And like Malvary, I'd rather make lace than count bobbins! Lots and
lots is a good description! Binche, Midlands, Bayeux, Brugges, Honiton,
antique in that order

apologize for not sending the original announcement to everyone on Lace
Chat, but made the assumption that everyone on Chat was also on the main

The rules for this year's exchange can be found in my original posting,
dated September 23, 2009. This can be found in the Archives:

http://www.mail-archive.com/lace%40arachne.com/msg30537.html

Each person may sign up for one exchange, and quite a few people have
signed up to do a second card in case someone doesn't receive their card.

If you have not yet written me to be included in the exchange, please
consider doing so!! If you do not hear back from me within 24 hours, it
is probably because my fickle "Comcast" has rejected your email, so ask
a friend who has a different ISP to try to send it for you.

I will have the list sorted and make the assignments before the end of
the month, so that each person will have at least a month to complete
their project. (Some have already started their projects, and a few
have even completed them!!)

back good memories, and makes me sad for my grandchildren.

Clay

TO ALL THE KIDS WHO SURVIVED THE
1930's, 40's, 50's, 60's and 70's!!

First, we survived being born to mothers who smoked and/or drank while
they were pregnant.

They took aspirin, ate blue cheese dressing, tuna from a can and didn't
get tested for diabetes.

Then after that trauma, we were put to sleep on our tummies in baby
cribs covered with bright colored lead-base paints.

We had no childproof lids on medicine bottles, locks on doors or
cabinets and when we rode our bikes, we had baseball caps not helmets on our

heads.

As infants & children, we would ride in cars with no car seats, no
booster seats, no seat belts, no air bags, bald tires and sometimes no
brakes

Riding in the back of a pick- up truck on a warm day was always a
special treat.

We drank water from the garden hose and not from a bottle.

We shared one soft drink with four friends, from one bottle and no one
actually died from this.

We ate cupcakes, white bread, real butter and bacon. We drank Kool-Aid
made with real white sugar.. And, we weren't overweight.. WHY?

Because we were always outside playing...that's why!

We would leave home in the morning and play all day, as long as we were
back when the streetlights came on.

No one was able to reach us all day. And, we were O.K.

We would spend hours building our go-carts out of scraps and then ride
them down the hill, only to find out we forgot the brakes. After running
into

the bushes a few times, we learned to solve the problem.

We did not have Playstations, Nintendo's and X-boxes.. There were no
video games, no 150 channels on cable, no video movies or DVD's, no
surround-sound or CD's, no cell phones, no personal computers, no
Internet and no chat rooms WE HAD FRIENDS and we went outside and found
them!

We fell out of trees, got cut, broke bones and teeth and there were no
lawsuits from these accidents.

We ate worms and mud pies made from dirt, and the worms did not live in
us forever.

We were given BB guns for our 10th birthdays, made up games with sticks
and tennis balls and, although we were told it would happen, we did not put

out very many eyes.

We rode bikes or walked to a friend's house and knocked on the door or
rang the bell, or just walked in and talked to them.

Little League had tryouts and not everyone made the team. Those who
didn't had to learn to deal with disappointment.

Imagine that!!

The idea of a parent bailing us out if we broke the law was unheard
of... They actually sided with the law!

These generations have produced some of the best risk-takers, problem
solvers and inventors ever.

The past 50 years have been an explosion of innovation and new ideas.

We had freedom, failure, success and responsibility, and we learned how
to deal with it all.

If YOU are one of them? CONGRATULATIONS!

*Washington Post Mensa Invitational*

Here are the winners of this year's Washington Post's Mensa Invitational
which once again asked readers to take any word from the dictionary,

new definition:

1. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders
the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time.

2. Ignoranus: A person who is both stupid and an asshole.

until you realize it was your money to start with.

4. Reintarnation: Coming back to life as a hillbilly.
5. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that
stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately,

of getting laid.

7. Giraffiti: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high

8. Sarchasm: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and

9. Inoculatte: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.

10. Osteopornosis: A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)

11. Karmageddon: It's like, when everybody is sending off all
these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and
it's like, a serious bummer.

12. Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the
day consuming only things that are good for you.

13. Glibido: All talk and no action.

14. Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter
when they come at you rapidly.

15. Arachnoleptic Fit (n.): The frantic dance performed just
after you've accidentally walked through a spider web.

16. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets

17. Caterpallor (n.): The color you turn after finding half a worm in
the fruit you're eating.

The Washington Post has also published the winning submissions to its
yearly contest in which readers are asked to supply alternate meanings
for common words.

And the winners are:

1. Coffee, n.The person upon whom one coughs.

2. Flabbergasted, adj. Appalled by discovering how much weight one has
gained.

Re: [lace-chat] Re: gasoline smell part 2

2009-08-07 Thread Clay Blackwell
Alice, how about if you get some of the charcoal that is sold in
pharmacies to be ingested when someone swallows something poisonous? If
you spread some of the charcoal on a flat surface, put a layer of
lightweight cloth over it, put your lace on that, another layer of
cloth, and then generously cover with the charcoal, perhaps the charcoal
would absorb the gas fumes as well as any lingering moisture. Obviously
I'm suggesting the cloth "sandwich" to keep the charcoal dust out of
your lace. I imagine that it would take a good long rest for the smell
to be absorbed, but I don't think it would do any harm, and could do a
lot of good. Other options might be silica gel or the gel/charcoal
combination that they sometimes package with medications.

any trace of odor is gone.

I may have to wash, rinse, re-soak my lace for several days before it's clear
of the stuff. About a dozen lace pieces got it, so far. I'm re-checking the
rest of the display items just in case I missed some the first time through.

I know that I wanted a new board for display since a recent demo in wet weather warped it, but I really didn't plan to do it right now. A small table, a box, my planing book, and some other things got caught in it too. I keep finding more things that smell. The display board was foam board, so it started to dissolve, or at least get very soft.

Hi Alice

I'm moving this to Lace as it *is* relevant as some of your lace got
contaminated, and you are more likely to get answers.

Fortunately it's not a problem I've had to deal with, but I have a question for
you - by 'gas' do you mean petrol or diesel? Petrol is what most cars used
until quite recently, diesel is what trucks and lorries use.

Petrol is much more flamable, but very volatile and I would have thought that a
few days in fresh air would solve the problem. In road traffic accidents
petrol spillage is a fire hazard. Diesel is oiler and I guess would be much
more difficult to deal with. A diesel spillage makes the road very slippery
and needs sand applied to it to stop other vehicles from skidding.

[lace-chat] My camera story...

2009-07-19 Thread Clay Blackwell

I can't resist sharing this story with all of you!

While I was at Lace at Sweet Briar, I was snapping away with my trusty
old (key word...) Canon Powershot A-95, when all of a sudden, it just
died. The LED on the back showed red and purple streaks, and if I took
the picture using the viewfinder, the image looked like red and purple
streaks! Not wanting to spend much time with it then, I just put the
camera away. Once I got home, however, I "putzed" with it, and sure
enough, I was able to get it to work again - but didn't know why or
how. I shut it down and put it away. Fast forward a week or two, and a
grandson came to visit... out came the camera. And on came the red and
purple streaks!

So... I began to do the research. What camera would I get to replace
this trusty old thing that's been like a glove in my hand for so long?
And what features are important to me and which cameras have them? And
what does Consumers Reports say about the cameras these days?
(Hallelujah, there was a recent issue devoted to digital cameras, and it
wasn't even buried deep in the "pile"!!) I took a side trip one day
while out, and looked at the cameras in Best Buy (which has the largest
array in our area, I think...), but was disappointed to see that they
did not stock the brand I had settled on.

Still, the more I looked and the more I read, the more certain I was of
the camera I wanted. I just didn't want to spend that much money (not
quite $300) right now. (I'm definitely in the "point and shoot"
range.) So back I went to putzing. And suddenly discovered that when
those red and purple streaks come on, I could make them go away again by
turning the LED screen off and then on again. (This isn't an option in
the newer cameras which don't have viewfinders... and I do use my
viewfinder occasionally, and like that feature! I also like the swivel
LED screen, which allows me "over-the-head" shots that are perfectly
framed... or even self portraits when the LED faces the front of the
camera (NOT a trick I've been inclined to indulge in...).

So, armed with that knowledge, I took the camera out to a party last
night, and snapped a few pictures with no incident. Arriving home
(nearly midnight... unheard of for me these days!), I put the camera on
the "bar" in the kitchen (higher than the counter), and went to bed. DH
woke up earlier than I did when he heard the thump. Our hungry young
cat had launched the camera to the floor, in an attempt (obviously
successful) to get someone's attention. I was given the bad news when I
woke up.

I turned the camera on. Check. I focused. Check. I shot a picture.
Check. I looked at previously shot images. Check. The camera is in
splendid condition, and managed to survive a 4-ft. drop to the floor and
still function. So...

Here I am, happy as can be that the camera still works, and sad, at the
same time, that I have no justification whatsoever to get another camera
- and given the treatment it got last night, this camera may last me for
years and years!!

And that's what I get for doing all that research and finding such a
super-duper camera to replace "Old Faithful"!!

Re: [lace-chat] list quiet- wood question

2009-06-27 Thread Clay Blackwell

Hi Janice -

Your question came while I was at "Lace at Sweet Briar", and I did not
spend much time with my emails! However, now that I'm home again, I
notice that you did not receive any *public* answers to this question,
so have this to offer...

My DH and I inherited a number of old pieces of furniture when our
parents died, and while they are not valuable antiques, they had a good
bit of sentimental value to us. Each had their own flaws... scratches,
dull finish, even water rings. I did not want to spend a fortune on
refinishing - partly because I didn't want them restored to "new"
condition - the patina of age appeals to me, and partly because they
weren't worth it.

The thing I found which has been the best possible solution is something
called "Finish Feeder". It is called, "the original and only genuine
Feeder Polish for all wood furniiture and paneled walls". It "cleans,
feeds, beeswaxes". It is made by the Finish Feeder Company, PO Box 60,
Boyds, Maryland 20841 USA. I bought my little can of it in a paint shop
which sells paint for walls, exteriors, etc., and all of the various
solvents and cleaners that are required for those jobs. This was in a
section that specifically related to furniture. We had an old blanket
chest which was lined with solid cedar (not just thin strips of it), but
the exterior was totally dull and unattractive with lots of water
blotches and sun fadings. I gave it several "treatments" of this
solution, and let it dry between applications. After rubbing briskly,
the wood now has an lovely finish, and the old patina has not been
destroyed. It even improved the appearance of a small table which had
once had a varnish finish which had mostly all worn off. It actually
looks much better, although certainly not a stunning piece!!

Hope this works for you!

certainly not a water mark. Has any one any idea of what I can do without
making it worse? The table is not solid wood but has a mahogany wood

My poodle skirts never actually had poodles on them... and they were

I think I might have been oblivious to the fashion world during the

I'm still out of touch!!) But I definitely wore the full circle skirt
with crinolines, bobby socks (pulled straight up, not folded), and
saddle oxfords. Oh... and that black belt around the middle? I
remember it was about 3 inches wide and made of black elastic. We wore
the belt with the buckle (snap, hook... whatever) in the back. It was
supposed to look cool too... but I remember that unless you stayed
pretty still, the skirt slipped down or the blouse peeked out under the
belt, and cool went right out the window.

Think about it, Tamara... why would anyone want to wear something that
looks like underwear and bare most of their mid-section? The "fashion"
of youth does not follow rational rules.

If he sleeps 7 hours a night, he makes $52,000 every night while visions

If he goes to see a movie, it'll cost him $7.00, but he'll make $18,550

If he decides to have a 5-minute egg, he'll make $618 while boiling it.

He makes $7,415/hour more than minimum wage.

If he wanted to save up for a new Acura NSX ($90,000) it would take him
a whole 12 hours.

If someone were to hand him his salary and endorsement money, they would
have to do it at the rate of $200 every second.

He'll probably pay around $200 for a nice round of golf, but will be
reimbursed $33,390 for that round.

He'll make about $19.60 while watching the 100-meter dash in the
Olympics, and about $15,600 during the Boston Marathon.

This year, he'll make more than twice as much as all U.S. past
presidents for all of their terms combined.

Amazing isn't it?

However...

If Jordan saves 100% of his income for the next 500 years, he'll still
have less than Bill Gates has at this very moment.

I don't *think* so... The problem is that usually deer are hit in the
night, and no one wants to stop and field dress a carcass when you've
got to think about getting your banged up car home.

What this state does have is a group called, "Hunters for the Hungry".
If you're having a lot of trouble with deer, you can call and they will
come out and "prune a few" out of the herd, giving the meat to the food
banks. The problem is, this can only be done in sparcely populated
areas, and the deer seem to be smart enough to know that they're free to
wander about un-molested in the city. They're really a menace here,
where they won't let my garden grow.

how to dress a deer, and gives one of them the deer when the driver

We did hit a deer once, in New York State, but all we found was a

out of there without leaving tracks on this side of the fence couldn't
have been injured too badly -- we were going slow when it jumped into
us, because Dave had started braking when he saw the first deer cross

Re: [lace-chat] Christmas food shopping - just how much can people eat? And lace on the pillow...

2008-12-23 Thread Clay Blackwell
It's not just in the UK... I went to the grocery store yesterday,
thinking to avoid the rush... oh silly me. It was early in the
morning, and still the parking lot was full. As luck had it, a spot
opened up for me *just* as I got to it. I spent more than usual, mainly
because a few staples we use were on sale, so I stocked up. I also
splurged in the deli on a 1/2 pound of wafer-thin-sliced Smithfield Ham
- it just doesn't seem like Christmas in Virginia without Oyster Stew
and Smithfield Ham biscuits! I realize now that I should have only
gotten 1/4 pound!! Oh well... it can be frozen. I noticed that the
store had an unusually large supply of cakes and pies and specialty
cookies... a lot of which will end up either sold at deep discounts
after Christmas, or... donated to the local "soup kitchen". So the
homeless and hungry will eat well next week! For that, we can be thankful!!

We're planning a very low-key holiday this year. I've planned brunch
for Christmas Day, and DS and his son will come over. But we're not
planning on any traveling, and I am actually happy to spend a few
relaxing days with DH just staying home. He will be expanding our
wireless network in the house so there aren't any dead zones - I'm
looking forward to that!! (Did I say relaxing? By the time he is done
with this, he'll be anything but relaxed!!) There are a few technical
mysteries to be resolved, but I'm confident he can do it.

Meanwhile, my lacemaking has taken a back-seat for the past month or
so! In October, we lost our precious old kitty (cancer), and I grieved
as though he were my own child!! Finally, I could not stand the void
any longer, and began to explore the cat rescue sources on the
internet. I finally went to our local animal shelter, and there spotted
a precious kitten. But, I knew DH was opposed to having another cat (he
commented that having pets makes it difficult to be spontaneous with
travel...). So, I did not "adopt" him on the spot. But several days
later, when I could not get him out of my mind, I went back, and he was
still there!!! I was elated, and adopted him right then and there!
We've had him for a month, and he has survived neutering and all of his
shots, and at his last visit to the vet, he had gained a pound and a
half - in just one month!! He will be a big boy... And he is such a
love-muffin!! HOWEVER, we dare not put up a Christmas Tree, because he
would destroy it in fairly short order. Next year, he should be more
subdued. Meanwhile, he keeps us highly amused. And BTW... DH is
as smitten with him as I am, so all is well in that respect.

"Mr. Giggs" has a favorite spot in the house. It is at the window seat
which looks out at several bird feeders. My lace pillow is beside it,
and takes advantage of the light. So, while I make lace, he either
sleeps or watches the birds. "Giggs" is pronounced "Jiggs"... he has
this name because, quite frankly, he is a Gigolo!

Hope everyone celebrates this season in the way that pleases them the
most! I wish good health and, considering the financial climate, a
reasonable measure of solvency to everyone!!

I too am not religious, and although I'll wish people a merry

Christmas Day, AND one of the other shops in the village opened for a
few hours even on Christmas Day!! So, I could never work out why
people had to spend an arm and a leg on food before Christmas and
again on Boxing Day!!! (I suppose ours is not to reason why)

Maybe we should join 'Grumpy Old Women' (shall we start a group

We're off out for dinner on Thursday, courtesy of my Mother in Law,
then we'll pop to see my daughter & her boyfriend, but I won't be
drinking, I've to drive!! (Well, someone has to) Had to take MIL
out today for a palm for Chris for Thursday, everywhere was heaving!
Then, when I got home I found that an aunt had called to say my Uncle
'passed this mortal coil' at the end of November! (They only live in
Hull and still didn't let me know at least I know where I stand
with most of my Family!)

Anyway, I'm off the soapbox, anyone else want to take my place?

[lace-chat] Re: [lace] Christmas Greetings

2008-12-15 Thread Clay Blackwell

Yikes! That's definitely an old one.

I found the following in an old cookbook which my Mother used in the
'30s and '40s. It sounds pretty close to the original ingredients, and
at least they have given us measures!

4 pounds lean beef
2 pounds beef suet
Baldwin apples
3 quinces
3 pounds sugar
2 cups molasses
2 quarts cider
3 pounds currants
4 pounds raisins, seeded and cut in
pieces
1/2 pound finely cut citron
1 quart grape juice or cooking brandy
1 tablespoon cinnamon and mace
1 tablespoon powdered clove
2 grated nutmegs
1 teaspoon pepper
Salt to taste

Cover meat and suet with boiling water and cook until tender.
Cool in water in which they are cooked; the suet will rise to top,
forming a cake of fat, which may be easily removed. Chop meat
fine and add it to twice the amount of finely chopped apples. The
apples should be quartered, cored, and pared previous to chopping,
or skins may be left on, which is not an objection if apples are
finely chopped. Add quinces finely chopped, sugar, molasses, cider,
raisins, currants, and citron; also suet, and stock in which meat and
suet were cooked reduced to 1 1/2 cups. Heat gradually, stir occasionally,
and cook slowly 2 hours; then add grape juice or brandy
and spices.

A recipe following this one instructs us to assemble the pie with two
crusts.

Re: [lace-chat] Something slightly different-recession strategy

2008-11-20 Thread Clay Blackwell

Hi Devon -

My sister owned a knitting shop for 25 years - just sold it about six
months ago. She said that during the last downturn in the economy, her
business boomed... People would opt to stay home rather than take an
expensive trip, and so the materials for a new knitting project seemed
rather frugal in comparison. I agree that we are less likely to seduce
new people into lacemaking, but I can't think of a better way to get my
mind off the economy than to sit at my lace pillow and forget about
everything else!

But... I am holding my breath to see what the economy does to the
desire to go to lace gatherings!!

Beautiful, but who are you going to sell them to? I understand that the
first thing people cut down on in a recession is handmade greeting cards.

An interesting question would be, is a recession good or bad for lacemaking.
One of my correspondents thinks it is bad for lacemaking because people
won't start expensive new hobbies, and lacemaking can cost a bit up front, always
a problem. On the other hand, once you have the bobbins and pillows the cost
of the thread is negligible. Books are expensive, but not essential.

Some economists are saying that people will stay home more, not dining out
or going to Operas, say. So, if they are at home more, they could make more
lace. Lace provides hours of entertainment rather cheaply. In fact, actually,
a book can provide many hours of entertainment for its cost, even if an
expensive book. I probably already have enough books that if I were suddenly
disabled and could do nothing but read for the rest of my life, I would never need
to buy another book..

The Nov. 17th Times has an article proposing that people will be doing a lot
of knitting during the down turn.

_http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/11/17/knitting-through-a-downturn/?scp
=1&sq=knitting&st=cse_
(http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/11/17/knitting-through-a-downturn/?scp=1&sq=knitting&st=cse)

Of course, if people don't go to lace days and conventions in order to save
money, then groups won't put them on anymore. One year of putting on a lace
event no one goes to can kill the desire of anyone to put on such an event.
Yet, in the family economy, a lace weekend for Mom is usually the thing that
people feel can be dispensed with in favor of dentistry for the children. I hope
it doesn't kill all the lace events.

PS Your cuttings are lovely. Remind me a bit of the ones I used to see in

nicer/more lacy.

When I was a teenager, a Polish friend of my mother used to do amazing
paper cuttings of roosters, flowers, etc., from magazine pages. She
did the traditional kind (sorry, can't think of the term and certainly
can't spell it without checking) where different coloured papers are
layered. I remember her son pointing to an amazing chrysanthemum paper
cutting and telling me, "That used to be a picture of meatloaf." From
Hamburger Helper to art.

I got this, Sue... I have been having problems with Comcast for a long
time... I notice it when I'm sending, but it sounds like getting mail
is an issue too. I'm not technically savy enough to say what the
problem is. But I've read that Comcast wants to sell part of the

"profitable". So they just ignore us when there are problems.

I'll add you to the raffle.
