Re: [LegacyUG] UPDATE on the new server and Hints

2019-05-28 Thread Brian Kelly

Cindy,

Legacy does have plans for a feature that will allow you to sync between
the Legacy data on your computer and an online MyHertiage tree. this
will probably be much like you used to be able to sync your FTM data
with data in an online tree at Ancestry.com. From previous posts that
interface will not come until the next major issue of Legacy (Legacy
10.0). There is no forecast of when that update will be made available.

I know nothing for certain but I am pretty sure that in order to take
full advantage of the sync feature you will need a paid subscription to
MyHeritage. The pricing of that subscription and the access provided
will not be known until the feature is implemented. They could, for
example, implement a lower priced subscription which only allows you to
create and sync your trees but not give any access to the MyHeritage
records.

They have a variety of plans now but their free plan only allows 250
people in a tree, $169/year allows 2500 people and $269/year allows
unlimited. They have a Data only plan for $249/year which allows access
to records but only a 250 person tree and an Ultimate package at
$389/year which combines the unlimited tree and unlimited record access.

Here is the site for their plans and prices:

UPDATE on the new server and Hints (21 May 2019, 12:05 pm ET)

1) Last Friday MyHeritage let us know that the new server is in place BUT it
will take them some time to get it programmed and then to move everything
over. Progress! Until then, make sure you are backing up your file in the
"normal" way. If you need to download Legacy 9 you can use this direct link
http://downloads.familytreewebinars.com/misc/Legacy9Setup.exe

2) The beta testers have been working with the programmer that does all of
the Hints stuff and there has been progress there as well. He sent the beta
testers some replacement files with fixes in it and they are evaluating them
(they still need tweaking). However, we can't issue an update to Legacy
until the server is back online because that is the server where the
developers create the builds and then issue the updates. Progress!

The update with the server will not change anything at all. This is just a

Re: [LegacyUG] Update 9.0.0.226

2018-05-31 Thread Cathy Pinner

Denis,

Who said there was a problem?
There's no general problem with the update.
There are problems, particularly for European users, in one of the new
features to do with pasting Latitude and Longitude values. This was a
new feature in this update and will work better in the next. It's
probably best ignored until then.

For your information, a particular update isn't changed. When there is a
general problem a new update is put out ASAP, usually within the day.
That is very rare these days as the beta team are given longer to check.

Ken,

Joyce is not referring to the website but to the Legacy Home tab in
Legacy itself. There's a box on the right headed Updates.

However, you may need to download again from the website.
The website was down for a few hours yesterday and you may have
encountered that.
Some anti virus software occasionally blocks a Legacy update. That may
be what happened when you say the installation file disappeared.

For some reason repeating the exercise is usually successful.
Here's more on Legacy and Security software.

Re: [LegacyUG] Update 209

2018-02-04 Thread Cathy Pinner
Tamara,

what bug?
Some people have to sign in again. Most don't.
Not a mention on Facebook from any of the 16,000 people there so I doubt
you'll have an issue at all. Enjoy the many fixes and tweaks to Legacy
FamilySearch.

  Cathy, would you please
let me know when the bug to familysearch is fixed, or a sure way to
reattach. I want to know before I load the update, I work between the
two most every day and don't want the panic I'll feel if it doesn't work
right.Thank you,Tamara MaddanSent from my Verizon, Samsung Galaxy

You have to sign into FS every two week, if you tell ie to keep you logged in.
If not, you'll probably have to sign in every time you go there.

If that's not the problem, I can't help!

I think you just need to sign in again in Legacy. We had to in beta a
few builds ago. And maybe the latest one. I tend to do these things
without thinking.

If you can't access the log in you may need to contact Support.

The refresh chart option has several problems recorded. Probably best if
you just create a new chart from scratch if there are changes.

I'll change data or photos and create a new chart. But can I just update an

Bobby,

No, I don't think that should be happening.

After the update, what path is in 6.2? From your note, I assume that pre-update
in your Smith family file, 6.2 said C:.Media/Smith. What does it say
immediately post update? And, then do I understand that in order to 'find' your
media again, all you need to do is update 6.2, you don't need to do any
relinking?

I always thought that 6.2 had absolutely nothing to do with existing links. The
only time I thought it mattered was 1) when you are adding new media it would
send you to that folder first to look for the media item (although you navigate
to any other folder once in the add media dialogue), or if you were using the
media re-linker (although I will say nothing about that because I have never
used it).

RE: [LegacyUG] Update Problem

2014-12-05 Thread Bobby Johnson
Michelle and Paul,

I have my default media file paths set as indicated in my email and as Paul has
surmised. Immediately upon update the/Smith and the/Johnson in the family files
is missing and ends up with media/. It seems that when I update the default
path to my media is reset to the installation default. I don't believe this
should happen since 6.2 has the default path labeled as a family file (FF).
That is why I have the/Smith and/Johnson etc. added to the end of the default
path setting. And Paul you are correct, the only thing I need to do is to reset
the default path after upgrading. Not that big a problem but I don't believe it
should be happening this way.

If I left the media path set as the default when installed and linked all the
media using that as the default I'm sure that my media would be there after
updating even though they are in subfolders. However there are places within
legacy that uses the default path to find your media files. For example, when I
need to cite a source and click on the cite a source button, legacy opens
the windows browser to the default path and makes it easier to find your master
sources. So you wind up with a choice of relinking your media after each update
or living with additional steps to find your sources when working with them.

Thanks for responding.

Hi again Bobby,

It’s interesting that your system behaves differently than mine. In your case,
the value in 6.2 is changed to a new value, in mine the value (which is not the
default) remains as previously set. (This is what you want as well, you are
quite happy to retain your 6.2 settings).

I’m wondering if the reason might be how the update is done. I am doing it from
the “Legacy Home” tab updates box on the right where it shows you installed
version, current version and gives you the option to update. Is that how you
are updating, or are you doing it some other way? It’s pure speculation, but
can’t one download the update from Legacy’s website and then install. Maybe
that method does more a ‘basic’ or “clean” install and sets parameters such as
6.2 to defaults?

I made the mistake of updating Legacy  I didn't do it right away after seeing
this message and did it at the end of last week.  Now my file is messed up.  I
have tried all the steps, including downloading the trail version.  I can't get
a clean install because Legacy won't uninstall.  I would like to get Legacy off
my computer if anyone can help.  It goes thru the uninstall process but it is
still there and you can open the program.  When I try a second time, I get a
message saying it can't find the uninstall log.  I re-download the free version
a 2nd time but still have the same problem.

I was told to continuing working with the program that they are working on a
fix but I am not going to continue to enter data into something that is screwed
up.

Tom,
Several people have reported a possible problem with their file after an
update.  The common recommendation is to download the full standard free
version and install it over the previous program.  If you have deluxe, the
installer will find your license and authorize it again.  Then Restore your
most recent backup.  Hope that works for you.

Tom,

Several people have reported a possible problem with their file after an
update. The common recommendation is to download the full standard free
version and install it over the previous program. If you have deluxe, the
installer will find your license and authorize it again. Then Restore your
most recent backup. Hope that works for you.

Re: [LegacyUG] Update Problem

2014-07-31 Thread Ron Taylor
Tom,
I just re-read your message about how you back up using a separate programme.
You should use the built-in backup of Legacy which will produce 2 zip
files...one for the data structures and one for linked media files.  Then you
can use your separate program to store those backups elsewhere if you wish.
The important thing that you will miss is the ability to Restore a Legacy
backup data zip file.  The zip file contains more than the fdb file.  The
Legacy backup gathers all the various pieces of a given database into the data
zip file and the zip technology compresses that to make it smaller.  A zipped
file will not open unless it is intact so a corrupted zip file won't work.
That gives some degree of integrity to the zip file.  The media zip backup is
un-zipped by regular Windows utilities.

Hi Bobby,

To see a new update on the Legacy Home Tab you have to have started Legacy

The other problems you had seem very strange.

Are you sure it opened the same file you'd been working on and not another copy?

Where is the program installed?
Where is your file?
What setting do you have at Option 1.2?

RE: [LegacyUG] Update Problems

2014-05-15 Thread Bobby Johnson
Cathy,
The update was on the server but did not trigger my program that it was
available. This shouldn't happen no matter where the program is installed or
where the family file is located. The program and data are in the default
locations and 1.2 is set to open the last family file opened. The strange
thing is that this is the second time it has happened to me and not in
consecutive updates. The last time was early in the version 8 history. If no
one else has this problem it must be with my setup. Everything is in the
default locations and nothing strange about my data. Can't put my finger on
what could be causing this.
Thanks for your ideas.

Hello, has any one noticed that up date 8.0.0.414 has messed up the chronology
report?? When I click on the chronology tab I get the chronology for a
different person, not the person I should get. I did a maintenance on my file
and that did not change the wrong report. This is not on just one person but
on everyone that I have checked. Downloaded the up date last night and went to
bed hoping that a restart would help but it didn't. Please help.

Sherry,  I did the maintance/check repair again.  Now when I click on
chronology (dosen't matter who is selected) I get the chronology for Elizabeth
Reynolds.  Elizabeth is from the sample file that I used to check this out for
one of the programers.  Futher more this Elizabeth Reynolds is not in my

2014-03-06 Thread Sherry/Support
I've been in and out of the Chronology all day starting with different
people and the report is always fine.

I don't know what can be going on with your file You could try
reinstalling Legacy and if that doesn't help, you probably should contact
Support.

I have sometimes seen a delay when switching files. The data from the old
file can hang around a couple of seconds and sometimes a delay when going
to another tab.

The other question would be what do you have running in the background?
Could that be slowing Legacy?

When was the last time you restarted your computer?

Re: [LegacyUG] update 8.0.0.414 messes up chronology report

2014-03-06 Thread Brian/Support
It looks like your chronology tab is locked on one person although I do
not know why. I tried changing to three different people in the Sample
File (I did this in Family View). When I clicked on the Chronology Tab
the screen showed the correct chronology for those three people. I then
changed to another file, which opened in Family View since that is my
preferred view, when I clicked on the chron tab the view was the
chronology of the person in the new file.

Just in case it was the Chronology Report instead of the Chronology View
I also used the Options Report button for two different people and a
report for the currently selected person was created each time.

Here is some drastic surgery to try:
1. close Legacy
2. Use Windows Explorer to open the Legacy Family Tree\_AppData folder
in your My Documents
3. Delete the file ChronFile.rtf you will find in that folder
4. Go to the usr folder and delete the Chron.usr file

Restart Legacy

Sherry, Jerimie from support suggested that I delete the chron.usr file and

Ok, when I reentered the program again, it asked me to backup 1 file, and

on the backup zip file of 3:40 in the afternoon, not the latest zip file of
10:51(after I had entered data for several hours); the later zip folder of
10:51 shows up in my recovered files, and the newly named update/copy that
I was trying to make still doesn't show up in my open file list within the

new format again? I didn't do that yet, thinking something is very confused

I have Legacy 7.5.0.278; on a Win 7 computer.
I have been following the traffic on the List, and I get the
feeling that perhaps I should wait; perhaps for 8.1 to come out before
I upgrade.

The traffic on the List, for the most part,  seems to come from users
who are very knowledgeable with computers; but I am not one such.

Any comments?  I do not want to get into a situation that is beyond
my knowledge to fix.

I don't see anything about training DVDs for Legacy 8. Where do you see that at
this point? I always get them when I order the new version.

I think there is a video about the new features in v8. Maybe look at it and see
if there are any new features that you really want to use.

Do what I've done (and probably others as well) download the free, Standard
version and install it alongside 7.5. Then you can use the two side-by-side and
make judgements based on your own data.

Re: [LegacyUG] Update or Wait

2013-12-06 Thread Bryan Pratt
A lot of the discussion here is over extra tweaks people want to do which makes
the upgrade sound more complicated than it is. I guess there’s 30 or so regular
listers here compared to the 100’s who have installed the program. If you
follow the installation instructions and install it to the folders Legacy
recommends you shouldn’t have any problems. And then let the installation copy
family file when L8 starts. I’ve installed it on Windows 8.1 without problem.

L8 is quite different so it does take a little while to wander around it, but
it is time well spent.

RE: [LegacyUG] Update or Wait

2013-12-06 Thread Paul Gray
John,

I doubt that waiting will prove to be of any advantage, but it isn't going to
hurt either.

Much of the discussion has been around 'installation issues' and in particular
the changes to the install (if one chooses defaults) to Windows standard
locations (Program files/My Documents). Waiting isn't going change anything.
However, if you told us what your current installation looks like (do you have
everything installed, including media in C:\Legacy - the old Legacy standard),
or elsewhere. Knowing what you have for current configuration would provide us
the opportunity to give some tips that might simplify things and prevent
problems.

Re: [LegacyUG] Update or Wait

2013-12-06 Thread Ron Ferguson
John,

I would not wait for an upgrade to V8.1 as it is not Legacy's normal
practice to u[grade in that way - eg. version 7.0 went to 7.5 when the link
with FS was made. They prefer to continually increase the last digit
currently .357.

I think that you would be better to follow Paul's advice.

I'm running 7.x and 8.x side-by-side.
I do all my managing and updating in 7.x and I play with the 8.x

A lot of the threads in this group don't concern me but its interesting reading
read about some of the other functions.

I figure once I'm comfortable with 8, I can delete the tree and import the
latest version from 7.x

Re: [LegacyUG] Update Unsuccessful

2013-08-16 Thread Wendy Howard
Click on Help General Information, and a window will appear that gives
you some data about what you're running. If you've got the Deluxe
edition running, it will say that in big friendly letters at the top of
the window, and you'll see your customer number in one of the fields.

I expect that the file where your customer number is stored was not
over-written when you downloaded and installed a fresh copy of the
program, so when you opened it up it already knew you were a Deluxe user.

Hope this helps. :-)

Kind Regards,
Wendy

You shouldn't need the password to update from the Legacy Home tab if you
have the Deluxe Edition.

Go to Help General Information and make a note of your customer number
(Do *not* post to the list!)

Close Legacy and go to the c:\Legacy folder on your hard drive. Delete the
Legacy7.LIC file (only that one) and then go back into Legacy and go to
Help Unlock Legacy Deluxe to unlock the Deluxe features again.

You shouldn't need the password after doing this.

It is most improbable that answering no to the update had any effect. If you
are referring to the flash screen which crops up every month if you haven't

If you would like to explain exactly how youcare trying to open Legacy and

I have just updated to the latest
version.  When the install ran, I
encountered an error I have not seen before.  I think
 the install
finished correctly, but I am perturbed by the error and
 would like to
know if this causes later issues.

Near the end of the install a pop-up window opens with this
 message

Please wait while windows configures plugin for Smart
 Sounds Quick Tracks

The usual thermometer bar appears and progresses for a
 moment or two,
then another window pops up with this messgae

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource
 that is
 unavailable

 C:\Users\Wes\AppData\Local\Temp\_isF1C2\
 file:///C:/Users/Wes/AppData/Local/Temp/_isF1C2/

When the OK is clicked, the following appears and the
 installation is over,

Error 1706  No valid source could be found for product
 Smart Sound
Quicktracks plugin.  The windows installer cannot
 continue

Clicking OK causes the box to disappear and the installation
 to
terminate,  Legacy then re-opens as usual.

Any intelligence on this situation would be appreciated.

 Thanks

 Wes

Agreed.  All the data was there...just double printed overlays if you could
read it.  Have hit the reset buttons several times to default and closed the
program down, but still repeats the overprinting.  Does this whether the page
has a border or no border.  Also the default produced by Legacy tag line at the
bottom of the page is split to left and right of the page and not at the foot
of the page.

to have them write it again in more detail, because we don't know how their
system is set up or exactly what order they executed the steps or if they were
also importing a GEDCOM that day or something? We usually do a better job of
grilling people on that, but it feels like we all just decided to not update

Of course, I was also assuming that people who posted here also reported the

Paula,

I pretty well agree with what you are saying. Sometimes someone may write to
say that, say, a report is messed up, or similar, and I think we all leave it
to someone else thinking s/he will ask what on earth it is about; then we
forget about it, unless somebody does ask the questions.

As a minimum we need to know in detail what the problem is, any changes made
prior to the problem, what actions had been taken that led to the problem,
including settings, what the result was, what Legacy version is being used and
whether deluxe or basic, and anything else that may be relevant.

I have indeed read a handful of reports of scrambled data. Did not see that
they had been described in detail, proven to be from the update, reported to
Millennia as bugs -- not just posted here. Saw just as many no problem with
update reports here.

You are not aware of the many reports of scrambled data?! I guess you have not
been reading LUG lately!

I tested and acknowledged a problem with a blank fonts screen when
 accessing reports.
That issue has been fixed by the programmers and is being tested by our
 beta testers.

I am not aware of nor have I acknowledged reports of scrambled data.

Looks like you've not got a printer defined to Windows!
