I don’t know if it will help with this issue, but it is supposed to help with
battery issues.
Try unpairing your watch and pair it again.

Re: [MacGroup] Help with iPhone

2018-08-08 Thread Ed Wiser
Have never seen this type of setting anywhere.
As it is expected for you to pick up where you left off when you open the phone
again. If one wanted to do that you could just double chick the home button
and tap on the screen to return to the home screen before locking the screen.
Takes to seconds to do. I do it all the time. It’s not a setting in the
operating system. It would be like asking for the Mac to minimize all apps when
I shut the lid on my laptop when I close the lid. Instead the Mac stays where
you left it when you log back on. Windows does the same when coming out of
sleep it returns to what applications are open. This is a basic computer
practice that hasn’t changed since computers came on to the market. As I said
one can train yourself to do this if that is ones wish.

No. He wants it to always open on his main home page no matter what page it
was on when it shuts from lack of use. Not a restart.

It starts on the home screen after a shut down and restart of the phone
totally.

It looks to me as though you’re using the “classic layout” for mail. This was
the way mail used to look before about 2005. To use the non-classic layout, go
to Mail>Preferences>Viewing and unselect classic layout.

Re: [MacGroup] Help with Mail

2018-01-20 Thread Anne Cartwright
That’s not what my screen looks like at all. See mine on an iMac:

Now that we’ve introduced iPad and iMac.: I get mail from my mac.com

account ONLY on my iPad and none of my mail from aye.net

comes to my iPad. Doesn’t bother me at all because the mail I get from mac.com

account, while very important, I can access from the Internet (PayPal). I
don’t need to have my iPad cluttered with the many messages I get through
aye.net. Especially since I have not, nor has the Apple store help - haven’t
tried Genius bar) been able to delete mail on my iPad. But that's a totally
different problem and one I can live with for now.

Maybe I have so much in Mail that the program has not been able to update when
possible. I tend to use Mail as a filing cabinet. Somewhat like my Documents
folder. In fact I’d love to know if it’s possible to save Mail in a folder
outside of Mail but exactly like it is in Mail. Can I save it to a flash drive?
or to a folder in my Documents folder.

That would be a great help to me.

Anne

In the view of messages in a mailbox, you can choose to view only the unread
emails. There are at least three ways to toggle this view:

(1) -L (or command-L) turns it on and off.

(2) The menu item View>Message Filter.

(2) At the left-top of the message list for any mailbox is a triangle in a
circle. Click on it.

Sounds like you hit the small icon at the bottom of your list of emails that
shows only the “unread”. Just a guess, hitting it again will bring them all

Re: [MacGroup] Help needed for photo-edit utility app…

Yes, I used that early on, but if I remember correctly, it still left
“artifacts” that were still identifying the app, etc., so I chose to use the
three apps and never looked back, even though it may now be usable for my
purposes. No matter what the origin, SmallImage removed most everything I was
concerned with and it was quick and easy.

Thanks,

Graphic Converter has forever been the Mac standard for this kind of stuff.

Preview does batch conversions, but maybe not the resizing you need..

GIMP will do this sort of thing. The learning curve is steep because it’s a lot

There’s always the story of the shoemaker and the elves …

I would suspect the MacBook has a problem with the print queue. Unplug the
MacBook from the printer, or turn it off, and see if the problem persists.

I have had good experience with Brother printers too -- two lasers, which work
well. Before that I had two ink-jets (different brand) and they had problems.

Richard,

I do not know what’s wrong with your printer. In the past I have used CEOM
Service Depot (on Poplar Level Rd.-just north of the Watterson) to repair my
printers. They were very good and honest and reasonable. AT the time they
didn’t work on HP printers and recommended UpTech Computer in J’Town. My HP
printer was so old they couldn’t get parts for it and they recommended I get a
Brother Printer which I did and it has been wonderful.

Here is contact info for both:

2017-02-05 Thread Richard D. Meadows
I guess my description was not accurate.

The paper is new blank…. the printing happens at night when no one is in my
computer.

It is not a paper issue, it is an issue of the printer coming on at various
times and beginning to spew out sheet after sheet of paper with one line
printed at the very top edge.

Could be a voltage issue. Do you leave the printer on all the time? I have seen
this happen here at work.

Richard,

Have you… (1) merely found that all [output] has the offending line on it,
or (2) actually opened and examined the paper in the drawer to find the
garbage was on all sheets?

Since it’s not an online issue, my best guesses are…
If (1), likely there’s a problem with the drum roller, or some contaminated
foreign matter on the corona wire or in the toner hopper.
Or (2), someone else has loaded your paper drawer with preprinted garbage.

Re: [MacGroup] Help Resetting Computer

2017-02-01 Thread John Robinson
If you have an external disk drive and any version of Apple OS CD, install the
disk and hold down the “C” key until it boots from the disk, Once booted click
on the “Utility” icon. When opened click on erase disk…you don’t have to
install a new OS since you don’t want to have any of your info on the
drive….tell the next owner that it’s ready to be set up to their specifications.

If you have a thumb drive with an OS you can do the same. I have an external
drive that I keep a bootable OS on just to format disk on the machine I am
working on..so that is another choice….I’ve used this to install several new
drives.

However, the least difficulty may be to have Apple do this for you..

My problem may be due to the fact that I have two HP printers using different
drivers.

As soon as I connect my older (but better) HP printer I get a message Do I want
to load the driver. Yes. But don't ask me where it goes.

Was this the driver from HP or was this the driver available through Apple? Do
a search for HP Printer Drivers for Mac and see if you can come across the
support page from Apple with the drivers. That’s how I installed my print

left the branding I did on that computer and was lazy and didn't

Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

Very simplistic, how long since you have rebuild the directory?

I have had similar problems, thought for sure the drive was gone, but booted
from DiskWarrior, and rebuilt the directory and the machine was fine…oh if it

Re: [MacGroup] Help

2016-02-29 Thread Beth Phillips
Richard,

Have you checked your settings for the Pages and Numbers apps themselves
on both devices to make sure they are utilizing iCloud? I just started
using these programs and couldn't figure out why the files I had set up on
my iPad were not showing on my iPhone. I had both devices set to use
iCloud, but there is a separate place for each app where you have to turn
it on too. (Scroll down in the Settings and Pages, Numbers and Keynote are
listed at the bottom. Click on each and turn on Use iCloud.) I hadn't done
this on either device so they only showed on my iPad where I had created
them. (All this time I thought they were being backed up to iCloud too and
they weren't because I hadn't turned it on for the apps on my iPad -
Yikes!!)

Thanks!

Try starting up in “safe mode”.
-russ

The following is from Mac Help:
safe mode
Safe mode may help you resolve or isolate
problems that you’re having with your Mac.

When you start up in safe mode, your Mac
prevents some software, such as startup items,
from loading, and it performs a check of your
startup disk. Your Mac may take longer to start
up because of the check.

1) Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
2) After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds,
then press the power button.
3) Immediately after you hear the startup tone,
hold down the Shift key. You should press the
Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the
startup tone, but not before.
4) Release the Shift key when you see the gray
Apple logo and progress indicator.

To leave safe mode, restart your Mac again, but
don’t hold down any keys during startup. Once
restarted, read more in Mac Help; a good place
to start.

I realize being out here in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, my timely

If my feeble memory serves me correctly, there is a member of the group

Maybe they can come up with suggestions.

Re: [MacGroup] Help

2015-06-15 Thread Jonathan Fletcher
To my knowledge (admittedly less than omniscient) there is no element within
FileMaker nor within any plugin that offers PDF conversion. There are plugins
that will pull out some of the data from a PDF form, and there are some online
services that offer OCR to users of FileMaker with a bit of programming. And it
is not cheap for just the purpose of the one incomplete ability.

All-in-all, I think you would be far better served, though, with PDFpen or
Acrobat Professional. PDFpen is the cheapest. Acrobat is more expensive and I
really don’t think you want to use FileMaker at all in this case.

And I’m a FileMaker Fanatic, so believe me.

The file that lists the sidebar stuff might be messed up. The easiest thing to
do is nuke it. The file is
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

Then you can start over and rebuild your sidebar. For good measure, you can
also nuke the Finder preferences.
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

They should be rebuilt by the Finder, if you log out and back in again.

Lee,

Maybe that's why I'm having problems. I can't find that file anywhere on my
mac. I can find it on my other mac (running Lion) at
home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

Under Mac X Mountain Lion my home folder doesn't have a Library folder at all.

When I try Spotlight to find it nothing other than search Web or Wikipedia for
it. It doesn't even give your mail message to which I am replying. Under Lion
all I ger is your mail message.

Try holding down the option key when you move the file, it will copy it to the
desktop, then delete the one from the sidebar. Have no idea if this will work.

Sounds like you just have a bulb out. They're tough to replace, though. What
brand is it? If it's a cheap-o off brand, you may be better off with a new one.
If it's an expensive Apple one or an iMac, take it by MacAuthority and/or the
Apple store and have them quote it for you.

At any rate those bulbs last a long time, so the screen is likely pretty old?

It’s a 21 ACER flat panel (H213H).
A few years old, although I don’t remember when it was
purchased. The receipt may be in the stored box, if I can
find it. An a new problem made itself known with tonight’s
start-up. The screen would act like it had powered off, but
the controls were still lit and apparently functioning.

Re: [MacGroup] Help… …problem due to lightning spike power surge.

2014-08-27 Thread R. D. Preston
John,

I found one good (previously unused) FW cable, and have
seen no differences. The FW connections that failed do still
fail, whereas the USB hookups are fine… …so the drives
themselves seem unaffected.

I have a mid-2010 Mac mini, with a FW 800 input port for
which I'm using a FW 400 adaptor. The FW hub (400) goes
into this adaptor, and any of the working drive’s FW port
connections that now go into the adaptor will still work.
The drives that were powered on at the time of the spike(s)
won’t function through those drive’s FW ports, so for now,
I’ll assume those FW circuits are what got fried.

Can these circuits/ports be repaired at a reasonably low cost?
…or would the problem go further in and be on the primary
circuit (mother) board?!! eGad !!

I’ll search to see if I have other FW cables to try. I did
switch around the ones I have, but haven’t found a
difference amongst them. Will try when I find others,

Hope it's an inexpensive fix.

Re: [MacGroup] help with NEO office

2013-12-17 Thread Harry Jacobson-Beyer
I don't quite believe what I am about to tell you about how I solved the
problem I wrote about below, but here goes.

I decided that the document files were not corrupted because they are all in
the cloud and I don't have similar problems on my other machines. So I
downloaded AppCleaner and deleted Neo Office from my computer. Then I
downloaded and installed Neo Office. The same things were happening.

I also have Spell Catcher installed on my program. In spell catcher I set up a
shortcut for my email address. I opened a Neo Office text document and started
typing, (ignoring the sounds the program was making as I typed) and when I
typed one of my short cuts it didn’t work.

I went to SpellCatcher and learned I had to download and insert the license
code (even though I had set up the computer from my time machine backup). Once
I did that the problem in Neo Office went away.

I don't understand the connection between the two programs but there you have
it.

Oh, by the way, the Spell Catcher shortcuts don’t work properly in Neo Office
but that’s another issue.

Anyway, thanks for responding Lee.

Harry

I'd download LibreOffice or Open Office and try the documents with them. If

Re: [MacGroup] help please!

2011-10-25 Thread Dan Crutcher
Stuart,

If you really have very important data you might want to consider getting a
Drobo, which takes several drives and does an automatic RAID setup. It's more
expensive to start with, but after going through literally dozens of external
drive failures while storing and backing up our photography archive here at
Louisville Magazine I have come to the conclusion that Drobo or some similar
type multi-drive arrangement is the only way to go for truly critical data.

 Hi all,

When I purchased my mac mini I thought I had plenty of room... but now the
mac is barking at me again... I have used all 320 gigs!

So, i purchased an external hd to put my photos and music on and hope that
1tb will hold me for a bit!

I've looked online, but have found many different answers about doing this.
of course, my music and especially my photos are VERY important to me, so i
don't want to mess this up. can any of you help guide me with this. I also
use time machine and have a separate 1tb hard drive for that and hope that
won't confuse matters... i, of course, still want to have everything on my
mac mini and the photos/music on my new hd backed up regularly. I am also
thinking about getting a 3rd hd (they are pretty cheap these days) to have
for off-site storage of photos/music in case of theft etc...

Any all thoughts/help greatly appreciated! I assume some of you may have a
 similar setup.

 Thank you!

Nora,

Often when you get a message saying that a file is read-only, you can still
open it, but you can't save it back with the same name. If that's the case, go
ahead and open the file and use Save As ... to save it back with a new name.

I doubt that your case is that simple however. It sounds like it won't let you
open it at all. If you control-click the file, you will get some options that
allow you to get info about the file, open it with other compatible programs,
etc. It might be worth a try to see if any other programs on your computer can
open the file.

If nothing else works (and the file doesn't contain anything too sensitive) you
might try emailing it to me or someone on the list to see if we can open it,
then we could save it back under a different name and email it back to you.

from my limited knowledge of iPhoto, yet numerous times i have messed up
things on my macs, i can suggest that you see if you can reset iPhoto to use
the external where your files are saved, as the source to draw the files
from. seems its a similar problem with an incorrect path that iPhoto is
using, to read the files from, which i have come across with iTunes, in the
past. i keep all my music on an external, and if i launch iTunes w/o that
drive attached, the app will use the default location on the main drive as
its source for files, thus no files are found when i would attempt to play

Hi Ed,

Tried that and it seems to bring up the photos in thumbnail. Actually about
twice as many as were in my library (not sure why). If I get this into iPhoto,
will it have all the additional data (such as dates, group by events, albums
etc...)? Or will all that be lost? Just wondering... at this point, I will
just be happy to have all my photos back. I made a DVD backup about 2 years
ago (I know, I know, I need to back up more frequently) and am wondering if
those have the additional info included when I backed up the photos.

I think a good backup strategy for photos and music has become a higher
priority! I need to give some thought to that!

Thanks!

with it a little and have googled the problem, but this may be a problem that
I shouldn't attempt DIY. I have backed up many of the photos onto DVDs and
they are SOMEWHERE in the house, but ideally, I would like to get all the
photos/movies etc... back. It has been a while since I backed up (I know, I
know) and hopefully I didn't lose the most recent photos. Any ideas? Any
place locally that I should go to fix this (hopefully)?

Does the hard drive mount on the desktop when you plug it in? If it doesn't, no
amount of fiddling with iPhoto will recover the photos living on it.

If it does not mount, the most likely problem is a damaged directory. First try
Disk Utility. If that doesn't help—and it rarely does—you'll have to try a more
robust repair program like DiskWarrior or Drive Genius.

There might still be directory damage. I'd still run Disk Utility and verify

Stuart one thing to get your images back is to do a spotlight search.
Using .jpg or what ever raw extension your camera uses. I had to help
a friend of my parents in Florida with this exact problem and that
how we found them. Then just select all and drag to iPhoto and sit

It sounds like a spammer got hold of your email address and used it for
the return address on some of his missives. What you're seeing are the
bounces caused by bad addresses on the spammer's list or rejections from
spam filters. There's not much you can do about it.

If you can download SpinRite (www.grc.com) and have another machine to put it

toasted. If SpinRite can’t revive it, nothing can.

You won't need a DOS disk because SpinRite creates a bootable floppy for itself.

Re: [MacGroup] Help with SCANNING. What would you recommend?

2009-12-13 Thread Neal Hammon

Brian:

You have a problem. To get good quality, you are required to scan them
at (or near) the scanner's maximum dpi, sets say 600 dpi. As you
decrease the dpi, you speed up the scan time, but then you have a
bunch of photos that will be somewhat blurd when you make prints.

So regardless of the scanner used, and the software used, just
remember, speed reduces quality.

If you scan using a standard 8 by 10 size, just determine where the
limits on the glass surface for this size is located, then take some
architects masking take, the brown stuff, and cut small square, and
hold the photos on the glass with the tape, and scan several at once.
This will probably save a little time, but not much.

If you really want good pics, then the best way is to use photoshop or
a similar program to touch them up. But of course, this really slows
things down.

If you keep them on your computer, and don't made additional prints,
the cost of making them (after you have purchased the scanner) is no
problem.

May I suggest that you go through the 2,000 pics, and just select a
hundred or so of the best ones.

Re: [MacGroup] Help with SCANNING. What would you recommend?

2009-12-13 Thread Anne Cartwright
I scanned hundreds of old family photos last year fro Christmas presents to my
siblings. Am continuing with more stuff right now and hope to have something
for them this Christmas.

Like John, I have been very happy with Epson scanners. Mine is an Epson
Perfection 2450 Photo. Unlike John, I use VueScan software which was
recommended by someone(s) in the group. I have been very happy with it.
Scanning photos, BW, Color, 35mm, also some negatives and lots of newspaper
articles, etc. Also use its OCR. It's not too expensive ($39,95), they even
have a free trial available. I found it to scan a lot faster than the Epson
software for my scanner.

http://www.hamrick.com/

One thing, if you have a number of photos the same size you can set it to scan
them about as fast as you can put a new one on the flatbed.

Last year I scanned 41 years of a club newsletter this way. Just named the
output Vol x, Number y, page 1+. As fast as I could turn pages and replace a
new one, it scanned, sometimes faster that me and I had to go back and
straighten out where I was. Each new scan was named with n increase of 1 to the
page number.

What I do with photos is , after culling, sort into stacks of specific topics
or year, or person. Set the output with an appropriate name and start with 1+.
After scanning, I go back and give better names to each photo.

It goes pretty fast but it still takes time. Actually the main problem is
deciding which photos are worth scanning and in what order. Just do a few a
day and eventually you'll get the job done.

Good luck and I hope you start earlier than I do when I decide to put together
a group of scans to hand out Christmas.
