[MBZ] O/T Moisture in air

Oh, I've got to jump on this

My position:
Using a wood stove does nothing to reduce the moisture in your home.

Using a electric heat does nothing to reduce the moisture in your home.

If you disagree with this position, than please answer the following question:

When using a wood stove or electric heat, where does the moisture go?

I would like to suggest that we only use heat sources during cold weather when
there is no moisture in the ambient air to start with.

Re: [MBZ] O/T Moisture in air

2008-09-23 Thread Rich Thomas
You are absolutely correct. When it is cold outside (i.e., winter,
usually) the air holds less moisture (humidity, water vapor) so when it
is heated up it is still dry. I used a steamer kettle on my woodstove
in the winter, helped a lot.

I had a triple-dekka in Boston years ago, rented the top floor to a
black woman and her 2 daughters. One cold winter day I went up there to
fix something, and it was about 90F and like a sweltering swamp in
there. They had the heat cranked up, and a 5 gal pot on the stove
boiling like a witch's cauldron. I made some comment about the ambient
conditions and she explained to me that black folks were more prone to
dry skin in the winter, so they kept it like that to avoid skin rashes
and such. I had never heard that before. It was actually hotter and
more humid than Boston summers, go figure.

I would think something larger like a pillowcase would be better.

As far as moisture goes, it depends on where you live. Here it
would be welcome all winter. My heating system has a 2kW water

anyplace where a swamp cooler is effective wouldn't have a problem

   just kidding ... i think ...

From the MANITOBA HERALD, Canada (a very underground paper): The
flood of American liberals sneaking across the border into Canada
has intensified in the past week, sparking calls for increased
patrols to stop the illegal immigration.

The possibility of a McCain/Palin election is prompting the exodus
among left-leaning citizens who fear they'll soon be required to
hunt, pray, and agree with Bill O'Reilly.

Canadian border farmers say it's not uncommon to see dozens of
sociology professors, animal rights activists and Unitarians
   crossing their fields at night.

I went out to milk the cows the other day, and there was a Hollywood
producer huddled in the barn, said Manitoba farmer Red Greenfield,
whose acreage borders North Dakota .

The producer was cold, exhausted and hungry. He asked me if I could
spar e a latte and some free-range chicken.

When I said I didn't have any, he left. Didn't even get a chance to
   show him my screenplay, eh?

In an effort to stop the illegal aliens, Greenfield erected higher
fences, but the liberals scaled them. So he tried installing
speakers that blare Rush Limbaugh across the fields. Not real
effective, he said. The liberals still got through, and Rush
annoyed the cows so much they wouldn't give milk.

Officials are particularly concerned about smugglers who meet
liberals near the Canadian border, pack them into Volvo station
wagons, drive them across the border and leave them to fend for
   themselves.

A lot of these people are not prepared for rugged conditions, an
Ontario border patrolman said. I found one carload without a drop
of drinking water. They did have a nice little Napa Valley cabernet,
   though.

When liberals are caught, they're sent back across the border, often
wailing loudly that they fear retribution from conservatives. Rumors
have been circulating about the McCain administration establishing
re-education camps in which liberals will be forced to shoot wolves
from airplanes, deny evolution, and act out drills preparing them
   for the Rapture.

In recent days, liberals have turned to sometimes-ingenious ways of
crossing the border. Some have taken to posing as senior citizens on
bus trips to buy cheap Canadian prescription drugs. After catching a
half-dozen young vegans disguised in powdered wigs, Canadian
immigration authorities began stopping buses and quizzing the
supposed senior-citizen passengers on Pe rry Como and Rosemary
Clooney hits to prove they were alive in the '50s.

If they can't identify the accordion player on The Lawrence Welk
Show, we get suspicious about their age, an official said.

Canadian citizens have complained that the illegal immigrants are
creating an organic-broccoli shortage and renting all the good Susan
   Sarandon movies.

I feel sorry for American liberals, but the Canadian economy just
can't support them, an Ottawa resident said. How many art-history
and English majors does one country need?

[MBZ] Warning buzzer

2008-09-23 Thread Jim Cathey
Ethelred (the Unready: 1982 380 SL) has got innumerable issues to deal
with, but one that's the most in-your-face irritating is the seatbelt
warning light that cycles with nearly every bump. So I pulled the
warning module (next to the cruise control amplifier hanging from the
brake pedal support) and resoldered it.

I also retightened the ground cluster over by the fuse box. That is
also part of the warning circuitry.

OK, this is weird. I've wondered why opening the right-hand door
causes the warning buzzer to sound on this car, but not on our later
SL's nor on our now-sold 450 SL, and I can see from the car's
schematic that though they wired the two door switches separately to
the warning module they also tied the two switches together, negating
the diode that's in the warning module to isolate them! Later SL's
have them separated. I wonder...

I pulled the two door switches, and the wiring found there matched the
schematic, as did the wiring to the courtesy lights themselves. (It's
always good to check.) It looked like one of the two brown/blue wires
that comes off each switch is just a tie between the two switches, one
that isn't necessary and that was eliminated for the 1983 model.
Gambling, I cut one loose from the driver's switch and beat the odds!
It was the inter-switch tie and after that the warning module only
buzzed when the driver's door was opened yet the courtesy lights
functioned as they should. I taped up the loose wire and put the car
back together.

A simple, good Catheyesque fix!

Congrats on a new one!

At 09:51 AM 9/23/2008, you wrote:

Heating oil has been in a relative freefall lately, down to ~$3.70 in the last
couple days from $4.79 when my oil company sent out pre-pay letters in July.

I declined to lock in a price and so far that has been a gamble well paid off.
We'll fill up this week at $1/gal less than we were offered 2 months ago.
Last year we locked in at $3, the year before was $2.50.

Hey at least you are in Florida. I hear that some folks in the more northern
areas are likely to be pretty hard hit
this winter. I think I read that Maine has a very high number of people who
heat with oil. Not going to be good

A pair of the wife's stockings around the duct will kill the lint problem...
The moisture problem bothers me a little.
The idea of a heat exchanger interests me although it won't get as much of the
heat as just ducting it in would and as I say we could actually benefit from
some of the moisture. I wonder if I couldn't duct out some of the moist warm
air through a smaller pipe to push warm air off the heat exchanger...
I may have to weld up a piece of stove pipe as a rudimentary heat exchanger and
try this idea out... If nothing else it keeps me out of the bars.

Not only excessive moisture in the house, but lint, too.
BTW, there is an attachment for the duct that can recover most of that heat
and still exhaust the moisture and lint outside.  It's an X-type duct with
heat exchanger in the middle - dryer air goes outside, the heat stays
inside, but you don't get something for nothing - 'have to run a small fan,
I think, to move house air through the heat exchanger.

By the way, the trendy is in Iowa City (University of Iowa). The Iowa

I have a BlackDecker 18v Firestorm drill I got for $90 at Home Despot.  It
seems to do well with the 3.5 deck screws and anything else I throw at it.
It has a high and low speed as well as variable speed within either gear
proportional to how far you squeeze the trigger.  I even used it to fire up
an RC car engine.  It came with two batteries that charge up within an hour
or so (at the same time).  It may not be the lightest thing out there, but
for something that powerful, it balances well too.  It also has a removable
chuck which can be removed along with the drill bit for switching back and
forth between drilling and driving since the driver bit is underneath the
chuck while drilling.

A pair of the wife's stockings around the duct will kill the lint problem...
The moisture problem bothers me a little.
The idea of a heat exchanger interests me although it won't get as much of
the heat as just ducting it in would and as I say we could actually benefit
from some of the moisture. I wonder if I couldn't duct out some of the moist
warm air through a smaller pipe to push warm air off the heat exchanger...
I may have to weld up a piece of stove pipe as a rudimentary heat exchanger
and try this idea out...

Re: [MBZ] O/T Moisture in air

2008-09-23 Thread Curt Raymond
Sure it does, it moves air around thus bringing dryer air into the house where
otherwise that air transfer wouldn't take place.

If your woodstove was setup with an external source of air then no it wouldn't
cause any extra drying of the house's air.

With a woodstove it goes up the pipe, you use inside air for combustion

When using a wood stove or electric heat, where does the moisture go?

Modern front loaders usually have a fast spin cycle. My Bosch is great, takes
less than half the time it used to to dry laundry, either on the outside line
(preferred) or in the dryer.

We used to vent the dryer in the house in the winter, but since I've tightened
up the windows and gotten the doors to seal properly, it's not needed. We put
an old nylon stocking on the vent pipe to trap the lint, worked great.

[MBZ] 190D diff continued

2008-09-23 Thread Curt Raymond
So I got my 190D back, the diff bearing is still making noise but the shrieking
symphony of the stuck parking brake cable is gone.

I've gotten one quote so far for $450 shipped for a diff from somewhere on the
west coast. Still waiting on another quote. Meanwhile Fred has found an early
'84 190E which supposedly has a 3.46:1 rear end ratio. AFAIK my car has a
3.42:1, seems like the lower ratio will make my car a little quicker off the
line but lose me a little top end. Thats fine, I've never found the very top,
I'm also thinking .04 difference isn't squat and probably won't even mess up
the speedo appreciably...

Anyway opinions? I think I may have finally realized where to take it if I want
the bearings replaced. Theres a very good transmission shop nearby that should
be able to do it. I'll swing by this week and get them to look at it.

As I recall, Marshall said these seldom wore out unless abused (e.g., run

Also, as I recall, Marshall said the noise problem was often the rubber

So I got my 190D back, the diff bearing is still making noise but the
shrieking symphony of the stuck parking brake cable is gone.

I've gotten one quote so far for $450 shipped for a diff from somewhere on
the west coast. Still waiting on another quote. Meanwhile Fred has found an
early '84 190E which supposedly has a 3.46:1 rear end ratio. AFAIK my car
has a 3.42:1, seems like the lower ratio will make my car a little quicker
off the line but lose me a little top end. Thats fine, I've never found the
very top, I'm also thinking .04 difference isn't squat and probably won't
even mess up the speedo appreciably...

Anyway opinions? I think I may have finally realized where to take it if I
want the bearings replaced. Theres a very good transmission shop nearby that
should be able to do it. I'll swing by this week and get them to look at it.

[MBZ] OT: Tractors

2008-09-23 Thread Curt Raymond
Speaking of which I got to see a Farmall Super MD on Sunday, it was running a
shingle mill. The MDs all started on gas and when the engine warmed up could
switch over to diesel. Its pretty amazing to see in action.

That shingle mill was from the 1890s and was pretty much all the Super MD could
handle. In its time that was considered a pretty big tractor too. Nothing
compared to a steam tractor though.

The washers built 40 years ago with blackmore or blackwell (or
something like that) designed guts had a spin cycle like a commercial
laundry extractor (centrifuge).  They would wind up and whine like a
banshee, but stuff came out pretty dry.  They were deemed unsafe by
our consumer watchdogs.  I prefer to think of things labelled
unsafe as Darwinian selection devices.  Part of our society's
problems have been caused by coddling the people stupid enough to
burn themselves with fast food coffee, etc.  Or at least not
self-sufficient enough to deal with the consequences of their actions.

Tricycle tractors come to mind.  An International H or Super C is a
wonderful device, as long as you respect it.  Slip up, and it will kill ya!

I have logged lotsa hours on H and A tractors  I love em.  An H will
spin on a dime and give back change.

If you're going to keep that water indoors, get yourself some wooden drying
racks and quit running the dryer. Then, instead of covering the walls, doors,
windows with water, the clothes will release the water as the air
can handle it.
Also, the amount of water depends on the spin speed of the washer. With my
Fisher and Paykel, I can wash my heavy winter coat and air dry it on
the rack in
a few hours. With a 40 year old Kenmore, the coat would drip water
on the floor
if I hung it up straight from the washer.

When using a wood stove or electric heat, where does the moisture go?

I would like to suggest that we only use heat sources during cold weather

I wonder about using some sort of housing with either an air filter out of a
car or out of a shop vacuum? I sort of
wonder if the dust needs to be taken down to a small level - 1 micron? Maybe
use the stocking first and then the
filter to keep the filter cleaner longer? Or, one might be able to use the
material that they use for shop dust
collectors and make some sort of bag. Wouldn't want to reduce the flow from the
machine or it will take longer to
dry. Have to be a bit careful with the humidity here in the colder areas too -
maybe feed it into an HRV that
periodically defrosts itself.

[MBZ] OT - moisture in air

2008-09-23 Thread Wilton Strickland
Following is an article I wrote on the subject several years ago. It's
long, but some listers may find it useful. For others, please forgive me
for boring you with it.

MOISTURE CONDENSATION IN ATTICS CRAWLSPACES
By Wilton Strickland

A combination of excessive moisture (high relative humidity in the affected
area), inadequate ventilation and cool surfaces in attics and under-floor
crawlspaces can cause condensation and/or fungal growth, rot, etc., on the
undersides of roof floor structures and lead to serious damages to the
structures. Generally, if wood has a moisture content of more than about
20%, significant damage can occur, but a moisture meter is not needed to be
able to see that wood and insulation are soaking wet and dripping with
condensation or badly stained and/or covered with significant staining,
surface damage or fungal growth and to know that the wood is wet enough, or
has been wet enough, for serious damages to occur if these conditions
persist. Designers, builders and homeowners should be aware of and
understand this potential problem in order to combat it adequately. Home
inspectors should be able to recognize and understand the problem in order
to properly report it and recommend improvements to alleviate it.
Condensation occurs on building surfaces when the relative humidity is high,
ventilation is poor the surfaces are cool. Relative humidity is expressed
as a percentage of moisture present in air relative to the amount of
moisture the same air can hold. Generally, warmer air can hold more
moisture than cooler air. When air is cooled below its dew point (the
temperature at which the air is saturated or has 100% relative humidity),
some of the moisture condenses into visible water, such as fog, rain, snow,
dew, etc.
This same action causes condensation to form on surfaces of cool objects
that cause the air in immediate contact with the object to cool below the
dew point. For example, condensation on the outside of cold drink glasses,
the insides of cold car and house windows or dew on grass. If enough air
(ventilation) is moving across these surfaces, however, the condensation
does not form - air in contact with the surface does not have time to be
cooled below the dew point.
In confined areas of buildings with inadequate or reduced ventilation,
condensation forms when warm, moist air comes in contact with a surface cold
enough to cool the air in immediate contact with the surface below the dew
point - just like the cold drink glass or car windows. This can occur even
in heated areas with poorly insulated walls and ceilings, inside closets or
any area with poor ventilation, high humidity and cool surfaces.
Condensation often forms on the cold underside of roof sheathing and on
rafters when warm, moist air rising from the living area comes in contact
with the cold roof structure.
It is usually not economically feasible to try to keep moisture from getting
into the attic from the living space. Moisture enters the living space from
several sources: the ground under the house, the air around us, cooking,
laundry, gas logs, bathing, breathing, evaporation from our bodies, from
plants, etc. Moisture from some of these sources can be reasonably reduced
(by reducing water entering the crawlspace from in the yard and off the
roof, by improved vapor barriers and ventilation in crawlspaces and improved
ventilation in bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms), but much of this
moisture cannot be reasonably eliminated. Moisture is a natural byproduct
of human life.
Therefore, this moisture must be allowed to escape to the outside without
doing damage to the structure. The most natural way for the moisture to
escape is to rise through the ceiling into the attic. If adequate
ventilation is not maintained in the attic during cold weather, this
moisture can condense on the cold underside of the roof and, in time, cause
serious damage to the structure. Maintaining good attic ventilation,
therefore, is very important year-round - not just in summer. Condensation
does not form on the underside of the roof during hot weather because the
roof is usually much warmer than air in the attic at that time. Attic
ventilation is important in summer to reduce the potential for damage to the
shingles from overheating and to reduce the cooling load in the house, but
it is important in winter to let moisture in the house escape to the outside
without damaging the roof structure. Attic vents should not be blocked or
sealed in winter!
If there are dark, mildew-type stains or wetness on the underside of the
roof or on the rafters not caused by a leak, the homeowner should try to
improve ventilation in the affected area of the attic. This can be done by
installing additional soffit vents by adding ridge vent(s) or wind
turbines on the roof. The most efficient attic venting system takes
advantage of natural convection - the natural tendency for warm air to rise.
This system has intake vents down

Before my time. When I earned my Aircrew Wings (1976) the Albatross had been
banned from water landings and was being babied for more potential years on
the airframe. We were based at the Otis AFB site, really long runways (only
a third of which we needed on Runway 32).

Was a kick on runway 32 to be airborne (gear up) leaving or come to a full
stop landing (returning) with lots of F-106 skid marks still out in front
of us on the runway.

USCG pilots learned in Pensacola to land on a carrier if necessary. USAF
pilots learned to land on a continent.:-)

I was also nav qualified in the HH-3F, but JATO is discouraged in
helicopters!

But I flew with some experienced pilots who told great stories of four/six
JATO bottles each side on a water take-off in the HU-16E.

It was NOT built on a Monday -- it was built like a Benz (and was a lot

Hundreds of hours navigating the 7245 out on George's Bank.

Unfortunately, I couldn't find any photos of the Goat in a JATO shot

 than dropping bottles afterwards).

Re: [MBZ] OT - moisture in air

2008-09-23 Thread Wonko the Sane
Yes (and answering your following email) -- they are Aircrew Wings. Navy and
Coast Guard and (I think) Marines share the same badge. In some ways, they
are more valued in the Coast Guard than pilot wings. Pilots did six years
and went to the airlines -- aircrew folks often hung around for a career.

They are enlisted air crew wings, very special and not easy to earn. It
means that you have qualified to fly alone (without an instructor) in the
airframe and can do the job for which you are qualified.

You have to lose the USAF mindset, Wilton, to understand the following.

In the Coast Guard, officers fly the planes. Everything (EVERYTHING) aft of
the pilot and co-pilot are enlisted crew. We kept the plane in the air and
the pilots pointed it through the sky.

I felt a special bond between the officers and enlisted in the Coast Guard,
because the pilots knew that the guys sitting aft of them had the same live
to fly again investment in the airframe.

I flew as navigator, which I think is an officer position in the USAF. I did
it as an E2 (University graduate) and was our air station's primary nav
instructor and check-ride-guy when I went off to OCS as an E6 (three years
later). If I didn't think they had the right stuff, I sent them back for
additional training, and no officer ever questioned my decision. ... If I
said they were ready, the pilots knew this guy could navigate them to hell
and back (all flights over the ocean), using Loran-A, Loran-C, or (in the
event of a power failure) find the closest point of land with DR and a
compass. To be honest, I was a total prick on check rides -- but I wanted my
guys to always come home alive. I wasn't always popular with my students,
but I knew when they went off on their first patrol alone, they could bring
the bird home no matter what happened. And no one, after earning their
wings, ever had a bad word to say about me (to my face), other than a thank
you later.

Here is what makes the Coast Guard unique, even from the Navy. In the Navy,
some folks fix planes and some folks fly. Coast Guard doesn't do that. As an
avionics tech, I fixed the equipment and then climbed into the airframe each
day and headed offshore for a patrol. Everyone did. We had NO guys who
didn't fix and fly. If you have an aviation specialty, you are air crew or
you go to a boat (and get a new rating).

The same guys who did the mechanics (including engine changes) flew as
flight mechanic (in the USAF known as flight engineer).

I was the ONLY guy at the CGAS who calibrated the RADALTs. Our mission was
flying 50 feet on the RADALT making passes on fishing boats. Guess who died
if I got lazy and was +/- 15 feet on the calibration? I was also the guy who
calibrated the ILS boxes. How important is that? I never worried when we had
to do an ILS approach, because I knew we were spot-on on the instruments. If
not, _I_ as the guy who died.

I was the last guy at CGAS Cape Cod to be dual-qualified in the Goat as
nav/radio AND flight engineer. Took a bit of persuasion to get the
wrench-turners to qualify me as a nose-picker. There was not a lot of
love lost between the avionics guys and the mechanics. We needed a much
higher ASVAB score to even get into school and were seen by them as somewhat
elitist. Fortunately, I don't mind getting oil on my hands. I like to think
I earned their trust by my professionalism. Truth is, I pestered the hell
out of the E9 until he gave in and let me get qualified.

USCG Aviation is a unique breed. We flew hard, we were professional, we did
good, and we partied hard.

If you saw the movie The Guardians -- that movie is 100% accurate of Coast
Guard aviation.

Ok, for everyone except Wilton, I apologize for my verbose post. Wilton will
understand.

Re: [MBZ] Mercedes Digest, Vol 34, Issue 126

2008-09-23 Thread Jim Cathey
There's a HELL of a lot of water in a load of laundry.

We dry on racks when time and conditions allow.
So how's that worse than venting the dryer inside?

 With my Fisher and Paykel,

I had picked that out as our next washer, to replace
the 40yo Kenmore. (Well over 30, anyway.)

So my wife bought the cheapie Maytag at Costco. I swear
it makes more distressed noises than the one it replaced.
It has a few plusses: a metal lid and a mechanical timer.
Just like the one it replaced. Feels a lot cheaper, though.
No way it'll last 40 years.

Re: [MBZ] OT - moisture in air

2008-09-23 Thread Wilton Strickland
Oh, I understand. You have every right to be proud of those gold wings, and
I meant no less - just trying to make sure I had the nomenclature right.
Don't forget, I've been enlisted, too, though only 3 years and 7 months -
B-47E maint. crew chief .

I'm also very well aware that it takes more than a PILOT to properly
fly/operate an aircraft, especialy a multi-crew-position one. It takes the
ENTIRE crew working as a well-trained team - not just one guy up front all
by himself (or herself these days). Too many laymen can't seem to
understand that.

Yes (and answering your following email) -- they are Aircrew Wings. Navy
and
Coast Guard and (I think) Marines share the same badge.

Everything (EVERYTHING) aft
of
the pilot and co-pilot are enlisted crew. We kept the plane in the air and
the pilots pointed it through the sky.

I felt a special bond between the officers and enlisted in the Coast
Guard,
because the pilots knew that the guys sitting aft of them had the same
live
to fly again investment in the airframe.

I flew as navigator, which I think is an officer position in the USAF. I
did
it as an E2 (University graduate) and was our air station's primary nav
instructor and check-ride-guy when I went off to OCS as an E6 (three years
later). If I didn't think they had the right stuff, I sent them back for
additional training, and no officer ever questioned my decision. ... If I
said they were ready, the pilots knew this guy could navigate them to hell
and back (all flights over the ocean), using Loran-A, Loran-C, or (in the
event of a power failure) find the closest point of land with DR and a
compass. To be honest, I was a total prick on check rides -- but I wanted
my
guys to always come home alive. I wasn't always popular with my students,
but I knew when they went off on their first patrol alone, they could
bring
the bird home no matter what happened. And no one, after earning their
wings, ever had a bad word to say about me (to my face), other than a
thank
 you later.

Here is what makes the Coast Guard unique, even from the Navy. In the
Navy,
some folks fix planes and some folks fly. Coast Guard doesn't do that. As
an
avionics tech, I fixed the equipment and then climbed into the airframe
each
day and headed offshore for a patrol.

Guess who
died
if I got lazy and was +/- 15 feet on the calibration? I was also the guy
who
calibrated the ILS boxes. How important is that? I never worried when we
had
to do an ILS approach, because I knew we were spot-on on the instruments.
If
not, _I_ as the guy who died.

We needed a much
higher ASVAB score to even get into school and were seen by them as
somewhat
elitist. Fortunately, I don't mind getting oil on my hands. I like to
think
I earned their trust by my professionalism. Truth is, I pestered the hell
out of the E9 until he gave in and let me get qualified.

USCG Aviation is a unique breed. We flew hard, we were professional, we
did
 good, and we partied hard.

If you saw the movie The Guardians -- that movie is 100% accurate of Coast
 Guard aviation.

Ok, for everyone except Wilton, I apologize for my verbose post. Wilton
will
 understand.

Then, instead of covering the
 walls, doors,
windows with water, the clothes will release the water as the air
 can handle it.
Also, the amount of water depends on the spin speed of the washer. With my
Fisher and Paykel, I can wash my heavy winter coat and air dry it on
 the rack in
a few hours. With a 40 year old Kenmore, the coat would drip water
 on the floor
if I hung it up straight from the washer.

that it came from Georgia, and that he was going to keep it in a

think he said 270 then, too) and the light turned green. I assumed
that it was the $2k 300SD I'd seen in the classifieds over the

On reconsidering, I already have a couple of corded drills - don't
really need another drill, so will only consider this tool to be a
screw driver.

I looked on Lowes' web site, and yes, they do sell Bosch, but the site
said that my local store didn't carry them. We went there anyway, to
look at what they might have (and counter tops), and they they were -
one on display, and another in a sealed box! Can't trust the web site
- it's not tied to a real-time database.

It's $150 at Lowes, and $110 (new) at Amazon.

Of course, there were also $15 cordless screw drivers, and everything
in between!

[MBZ] OT was what about you, now Washer Lint

2008-09-23 Thread harry watkins
If you really won't lint, strain the washer water.

I plumbed my house for both black and gray sewage. The black goes directly
to the septic plant. The gray goes to a settlement barrel, then to a 55
gallon barrel with a float operated pump.

I made a six port manifold that allows gray water to be directed to various
places in the yard and discharged through homemade PVC sprinkler heads.

The lint caught in a strainer at the 55 gal barrel is more than I ever
dreamed. I don't see how clothes last as long as they do.

I installed valves that allow me to send gray water to the plant in case
something goes wrong with the pumping system.

Re: [MBZ] Iced coffee in Iowa

2008-09-23 Thread Redghost
Temp-daughter looks at me strange when I tell her to eat veggies. Or
fruit, or even something new in the way of food, or tell her new
things that challenge her vision of reality. It is as if she were
confronted by a fish and it starts talking to her.

Anyway, she likes her coffee. Talks about needing to get a
starbucks. So we did. The looks of talking fish were plenty as she
saw people getting iced coffee. Severe WTF.

 Panera doesn't have iced coffee.

 Curt:

I grew up in Mass (Lexington) and have lived in Des Moines for the
past 21 years. We do too have iced coffee. The Panera in Ames has
iced coffee. I've gotten it there several times. Your waitress was
 clueless.
