That's a great story, Paul. In case it wasn't a story, tho', and speaking purely from logic (not experience) get a roll of paper towels, a set of gloves and a bottle of Windex. As you may know some of us have been known to have brushes with the authorities from time to time on the way home after a night out with friends. Well, two days ago I was at a car company Christmas party and had several cocktails followed by some rather nice red wine. Most of the bottle, I believe. Feeling jolly, I still had the sense to know that I may be slightly over the limit. That's when I did something that I've never done before - I took a cab home. Sure enough on the way home there was a police road block, but since it was a cab they waved it past. I arrived home safely without incident. A true point and shoot is a throw away camera that has a fixed focal length and speed and DOF Precisely. Like the old Kodak Brownie. The only moving parts were s shutter release and a film rewind knob! The w60,for instance, comes with a book that has over 100 pages! My Pentax Optio S5i has 147 pages! Hardly a point and shoot. In fact, most features consume only 1 or 2 pages of instruction. That will tell you how many 'features' the camera offers! More in the Pentax mind-set of trying to be all things to all people. While this camera IS quite small, and concealable, it is NOT a PS camera, by ANY sort of definition! They want you to read the whole book first! Exactly so! Says that on the front cover of my manual! ...before using the camera. You and I don't really have to, but someone who just wants to take some snaps is never going to do that. I have several friends who thought they would like digital for the obvious reasons -- no film charges, ease of getting prints, fits in your pocket, SIMPLE TO USE the Z10 and the W60 both have tons of confusing choices aimed at us, actually - they want to put it all in one. My point exactly. Pentax and other companies have to assume that someone taking snapshots is going to want the camera to perform exactly the same way every time they use it, so they make the camera reset itself unless someone like you tells it not to. It may not make a lot of sense to you, but I'm sure there are a lot of people who appreciate it. John No one over 30, does, I guarantee. these cameras are designed for people who grew up with computers and like cutsey pie little icons... they may know nothing about lighting, timing, composing, but they do seem to like to have lots of little buttons to push... Pentax tried to make a camera especially to appeal to EVERYONE... and that is what is screwed up. THe z10 and w60 DOESN'T do it all for you -- the choices are part of there selling schtick - The very worst element , which is one that has nothing to do with photography at all is simply that the on-off switch is VERY close to the shutter release... and the buttons feel very much alike... shooting quickly I hit the wrong one a number of times... that has nothing to do with my skills as a photographer. That's a common complaint. As time goes on, some makers have done what they could to modify that, and make it more distinctive. But, you're right again. She's been using a film camera ~ her Samsung AF-SLIM-R, which is a really nice small 35, and it's okay but not what she is really looking for. She thinks she wants a digital. So, we're still looking. The Pentax Optio Z10 is a small, compact digital camera http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews_pentax_optio_z10.php# with a twist - despite being the same size as a pack of playing cards, it features a 7x optical zoom lens equivalent to 38-266mm. Furthermore the lens is internal and doesn't extend from the camera, protected by a plastic screen and a sliding lens cover. The Pentax Z10 has an 8 megapixel sensor, digital shake reduction mode for both still pictures and video, a 2.5 inch LCD monitor http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews_pentax_optio_z10.php#, ISO 64-3200 and Face Recognition. A 7x zoom camera is something of a departure from the norm for Pentax, who usually specialise in more conservative 3x zoom models. Have they bitten off more than they can chew with the Z10? Mark Goldstein reviewed the Pentax Optio Z10 to find out. I'm going there tomorrow to buy printer ink and paper anyway ann I was pretty tempted myself, but...I visited the site you included above, and find it has no viewfinder, so I quit reading about it. Chimping has never appealed to me... My S4 has an optical viewfinder that zooms in and out in concert with the lens, so you always see exactly what the lens sees! Well, not exactly, as the viewfinder is 1 1/4 offset from the center of the lens, so it's sort of like a small rangefinder camera in that respect... I find framing the shot in the viewfinder gets me very close to the image composition I want, and as I can always manipulate the image (crop and such) later, it works for me. Which to me relieves me of the task of checking everything on the external LCD all the time! I can do that back home, if I feel the need. After all, it IS a snapshot camera! People seem to quickly lose sight of that, and criticize it for it's shortcomings, but I have used mine for a long time now and find it's a marvelous little camera, and in truth, 4 Mpixels is pretty decent resolution for most things. In fact, if you found a good price on the S5i or the S6, that's even better! Identical in size and handling, but the 30-50% increase in resolution might make all the difference to you... On the street, I prefer the old style of eyeballing the scene, composing and framing it in the eyepiece just before pressing the shutter. It's always worked for me...and has the additional benefit of being very fast. All things considered. But, to each his own. If you can handle one, and use the eyepiece while observing the scene zooming in and out...you might find you really like it. There is no M42 DSLR or DSLR adapter on the market that enables the M42 lenses to operate fully (yet). That's my point. This M42 DSLR would fill a demand that already exists, not create a new one or expect buyers starting from scratch to use M42 bodies and lenses althought there could be a good argument to do that too. Its nothing more than a better M42 camera to use the massive quantity of M42 lenses ALREADY in circulation. Necessity is the mother of invention... JC O'Connell [EMAIL PROTECTED] My thought is that a manufacturer builds a body so that he can sell his rather expensive lenses for it, not the other way around. Sort of like a manufacturer practically gives away a printer, because you sell tons of paper and ink cartridges ~ that's where the profit, your R.O.I. is. Isn't it that way with a body? (Full of 'em tonight! :-D Does anyone believe Leica's bodies and lenses justify their obscene prices, from a manufacturing and assembly cost standpoint? Is there THAT much labor in either one? Are they essentially hand made, like some outrageously expensive cars are? Some of the well-known marques are essentially hand made and hand fit, with incredible number of man-hours in them. Is it like that way with Leica? At least their renown M series rangefinders and lenses? It seems to me they're on the perpetual brink of bankruptcy because they're too bloody expensive except for those professionals (well off or otherwise) who simply must have a Leica, not because they're honestly that good... Capable and durable? So it seems, but worth the tab? That's the question. Watch many a Nikon and lenses die in my hands. It was a good thing. The same should be done with the old M42 glass if the owner can't sell it for the price they want, does not have a public collection of Pentax memorabilia, or no longer has a camera to use them with. Maybe it will make the remaining lenses in the world sooo valuable that someone will build you a digital camera to use them as you wish them used, in exchange for a couple of spare lenses. Joseph McAllister The bottom of the Pacific Ocean is littered with electronic gear the U.S. Navy no longer wanted, simply because they had some insane idea it should never get into the hands of civilians. I had a relative, an officer in the Navy, who spent time in the clink, because when he was assigned to dump so many perfectly good and essentially new top quality vacuum tubes into the ocean, he saved one from oblivion, to use in his ham gear. To be used in worldwide communication, for the uses most avid hams do, is a good thing, and no commercial benefit derives from it. But, the Navy said Destroy It, and he didn't. So he paid for it... Bob W wrote: Keith Whaley wrote: I've an opinion on this too. (Full of 'em tonight! :-D Does anyone believe Leica's bodies and lenses justify their obscene prices, from a manufacturing and assembly cost standpoint? Is there THAT much labor in either one? You're paying 80% of the money for the 20% quality increase you get over the competition. Once a certain level of quality is reached, the cost of making it even better rises out of proportion to the cost of the baseline, so to speak. Professionals who buy them must think the price is justified. Magnum photographers, for example, are not fools. It's unlikely that the prestige of them cuts a lot of ice. Amateurs don't have to justify them. Professionals and amateurs alike are also entitled to enjoy the history romance attached to owning a Leica, and the pleasure of using (or even just admiring) a beautiful object. I think it was Ruskin, or perhaps William Morris, who said 'You should have nothing in your house that is not useful or beautiful'. Leicas are both useful and beautiful. Part of their beauty is their prestige, I suppose. My watch is a very nice Tag Heuer, and I know other people who have Rolexes, Breitlingers and Omegas. These watches are all beautifully made. None of them tells the time any better than the £25- plastic Timex I also own. Few people can justify owning these watches on utilitarian grounds - even scuba divers can get perfectly good diving watches for a lower price - but they're beautiful, well-made objects which work extremely well. The appeal of Leicas is the same sort of thing. I understand your justification message very well. Thanks for that... Years and years ago, I sacrificed a fair bit of personal cash to buy a nearly perfect Contax IIIa. Absolutely loved that bit of machinery you could take lovely photographs with! In time I had to trade it off for cash to cover other exigencies... Stuff happens when you're young and foolish. As the years passed, I found myself blessed with spare cash from time to time, and the memory of that lovely IIIa came back, and oddly enough I bought one. The silky smoothness of it's action was unchanged. Matched my hoary old memories perfectly. A fantastic piece of the camera building art. Totally worth every cent... Problem is, my hands and joints are no longer happy assuming the Contax R.F. position, and it's not worth it to use that camera any more. So, here I am with what to me is a Leica R.F. equivalent I can't effectively use. Yes, having such a camera in your hands is an experience few other cameras can match. I still think their price is too high, just for that red dot. But I do appreciate the excellence of the build. Thanks to one and all for the insight and opinion. Only one was ever made and was pretty hard to find, but luckily I found one here in Orlando at the local Camera and Hobby store. I just finished it today and tonight I took it to him at our Wed night Aviation Group meeting. He was in tears as he looked it over closely. In other words, during the last six years of his life, spent mainly in Los Angeles, Winogrand made more than a third of a million black-and-white exposures and, inexplicably, did not stop to see what he had done. Pick your number! Rick Taking nothing away from the man, but...IMMHO, he had a real problem. That's obsession in the worst degree. Perhaps other diagnostic labels would fit better, but he was far from normal. I'd say he turned into an automaton, merely going thru the mechanical motions of being a prolific photographer, but not completing the task. He did a few. Perhaps several proof sheets. From less than half his exposures he made contact sheets. How many prints from those? For him, the end point was anathema. He wanted to search out the subject, pick all the other elements, but...once the shutter was pressed, his work ~ and his interest ~ was over. So it seems! keith whaley -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

I'm sure there's some nice stuff there, too. William Robb That's a pretty blasé attitude, even for you, Mr. Billiam Sir! I stopped in to pick up another walking around bag and found that all the Pentax gear is now gone from their shelves. The have only left over stock. It's not that they don't want to sell Pentax. It's because they can't get a hold of any reps to deal with because Pentax USA has (as the folks at Samy's told me) let all their reps go. What the bloody hell is happening to Pentax (Hoya)? Are they rolling over? Are we eventually going to be left high and dry because someone, somewhere doesn't have the guts to market Pentax effectually? Move over Minolta, Konica users. If this keeps up we'll be joining you down memory lane. Old news: http://theonlinephotographer.typepad.com/the_online_photographer/2008/04/pentax-sky-offi.html The dealer may not have been entirely truthful to you about this being the *reason* they aren't carrying Pentax any longer, because several other camera makers have moved to this sales structure (that is, by type/size of retailer rather than by geographic location) some time ago. I read it and sort of understand, but to be blunt, and perfectly clear about it, if the walk-in customer decides s/he is NOT served by the odd changes in marketing and servicing of old Pentax customers, he is just as likely to decide this might be the time to change the camera line... I question any tack that makes customers worry and wonder about the health of their chosen line of camera gear. Pentax have been pretty quiet as to what long term customers might expect from thie merger, and what little I have read, here and there has NOT been light and upbeat about it. I think that's a serious error in judgment. keith whaley -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.
