June 7, 1968. A day just like today. It was a Friday ... I woke up, did all
my primping and went to school ... I was a sophomore in HS and my world was
perfect. My parents had opened our pool earlier in the week, so I had invited
my best friend and our boyfriends over for a swim after school. We got home
about 2:30 and headed out back - full of youthful enthusiasm. We hit the pool
playfully, used the diving board and the slide ... we were having a blast.
Sometime before 3:30 (the details about time are a bit fuzzy), I took my last
step. I walked to the slide, climbed the ladder, put my hands over my head and
gracefully slid down hands first. The minute my head hit the water I felt a
zing and everything stopped. I just floated in the water ... it felt like I
was doing the jellyfish (aka dead man's) float, but I realized I couldn't move.
I knew I was in trouble, and wondered if anyone else knew it. I directed my
thoughts to my boyfriend ... Paul, help me. Please, see me. Please He
was the only one who realized I wasn't playing. (I think I do believe in
telepathy.) They pulled me up into the air, and I could breathe again. The
next thing I remember is laying on the pool deck. It was hard to get a deep
breath, but I was breathing on my own. People kept putting my hands across my
stomach, and they would just fall off... again and again. I still don't know
why they did that. Eventually a sheriff came - he wanted to do artificial
respiration, but my neighbor sternly told him not to lay a f***ing finger on
me. I was shocked to hear an adult use that word ... no one I knew used it
back then. Finally an ambulance came, about 45 minutes after my accident. They
lifted me onto their gurney (no manual stabilization, no C-collar, no back
board), slid me into the back of the ambulance and placed a sandbag on either
side of my neck. We rode to the hospital with one guy kneeling over me holding
the sand bags and the other blaring the siren the whole way. Gave me one hell
of a headache! At the hospital they cut off my bathing suit - I was so
embarrassed. I was also appalled ... it was a borrowed suit after all - I
scolded them for wrecking it. My memories start to fade out at that point. I
did hear the clippers as they shaved off most of my hair and the drill as they
prepared to place the Crutchfield tongs in my head, but that was all.

Much later, I found out that the doctors had given me a 5% chance ... of
surviving.

I am 62 years old, and have forgotten so much of my life, yet these memories
remain crystal clear. Time has not clouded them. You'd think by now these
memories would only bring remembrance ... not regret and sorrow. Usually I
celebrate each anniversary - the survival of one more year. This year,
however, it's hit me hard. I am not needed as I once was. I am so lonely.
Being dependent on others sucks. I want a do over - another chance. I don't
want to be a quad any more.

Thanks, O Quads, for being there to hear me.

my primping and went to school ...
I directed my
thoughts to my
boyfriend ... Paul, help me.  Please, see me.  Please  He was the only
one who realized I wasn't playing.  (I think I do believe in telepathy.)  They
pulled me up into the air, and I could breathe again.  The next thing I
remember is laying on the pool deck.  It was hard to get a deep breath, but I
was breathing on my own.  People kept putting my hands across my stomach, and
they would just fall off... again and again.  I still don't know why they did
that.  Eventually a sheriff came - he wanted to do artificial respiration,
but my neighbor sternly told him not to lay a f***ing  finger on me.  I was
shocked to hear an adult use that word ... no one I knew used it back then.
Finally an ambulance came, about 45 minutes after my accident. They lifted me
onto their gurney (no manual stabilization, no C-collar, no back board), slid
me into the back of the ambulance and placed a sandbag on either side of my
neck.  We rode to the
hospital with one guy kneeling over me holding the sand bags and the other
blaring the siren the whole way.  Gave me one hell of a headache!  At the
hospital they cut off my bathing suit - I was so embarrassed.  I was also
appalled ... it was a borrowed suit after all - I scolded them for wrecking it.
My memories start to fade out at that point.  I did hear the clippers as they
shaved off most of my hair and the drill as they prepared to place the
Crutchfield tongs in my head, but that was all.

Hello broken leg,

I was in approximately the same predicament that you are in. I broke my
leg several years ago in three places, just below the knee, just above the
ankle, and the third was the small bone. The first thing the doctor asked
me was do you want me just to amputate. YEAH RIGHT!

This doctor was trying to save another person's leg and it turned into
gangrene and needed to be amputated. Sometimes I question in a doctor's
intelligence.

New doctor: my second opinion Dr. wasn't quite sure what to do and his
young casting assistant suggested a Bob Jones cast. This cast is soft cast
of cotton batting wrapped thickly of round the leg. The cotton batting was
wrapped with Ace bandages and changed every two weeks. It held the bones
in place, and no pressure sores from a hard cast. Works for me!

Thats an interesting story. I see the positive here is you are determined to be
independent and you never give up. You may need to look into a different type
of footrest maybe that sticks out , so it would hit the shelf instead of your
foot. a guy on youtube about your same level has such a footrest.type in
Chris Colwell. This quad has some awesome vids. I knew a girl with spina
bithida that switched to a power chair and broke her leg going in the
doorway...she was 24 and died in the hospital from an infection.

I am sorry to hear about your son's accident.

I was on a ventilator with high fevers following my accident, but
fortunately the fevers subsided after four or five months.

Clearly some facilities are much better than others. Would your insurance
allow you to move your son to another state with better facilities?

I'm curious... is your son on a ventilator? If he is on a ventilator, this
dramatically lowers your list of options.

I would also like to know: what is an M VA 4-10-10 ?

Unfortunately, there are some very nasty bugs which are spread in hospitals.
If the primary problems deal with infections and fevers, maybe the best
thing is to try to find the best doctor you can you could help you get these
infections under control.

I'm sorry to have any magic answers for you. But I am very glad that you
found this forum. This forum is the best resource which I have found with
the day-to-day issues and problems and complications related to
quadriplegia.

Take care,

It is all about diet and if you keep changing your diet, you might continue to
experience issues.  Have you considered performing a good clean, using Easy Go
to clean out the upper bowel.  This way you can begin to train your bowel to go
each day or night at the same time... usually after a meal.  Make sure that
your

If you are *sweating buckets* because of being *backed up* I would suggest
going to see a knowledgeable Physical Medicine and Rehab doc

Re: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject!

2011-01-11 Thread Don Price
Greg [and all,]

If you're sitting on your commode chair for two hours your sweating my have
something to do with pressure--those seats aren't padded very well.

It seems we all have our own systems for bowel programs, but sometimes things
change.  I'll describe how I do mine, in case it might be of help to others.

As a c5-6 quad I am able to tell when I need to have a bowel movement because
of
a certain chill I get, plus some sweating that accompanies that (mild A.D.
symptoms.)  Generally I need to 'go' every other day, but it depends on how
much, and what, I've had to eat or drink.

Once I feel the need to use the toilet I inform my caregiver and he transfers
me
to my shower/commode chair, pulls my pants down, rolls me over the toilet and I
do my business.  Generally this takes less than 15 minutes and requires no
suppository or digital stimulation.  I do, however, use a stimulus that works
well for me:

Years ago I figured out that when in the shower if I sprayed a blast of hot
water underneath me [onto my rectum] it would stimulate my bowels every time.
The water has to be hot, but not hot enough to scald or burn, obviously.
Anyhow, the hot water sprayed underneath, briefly, causes irritation and
promotes the parastalsis to begin.

My shower is right next to my toilet, so when I'm sitting on my commode chair
over the toilet I can still use the [hand-held] showerhead to spray underneath
me and get things started.  This is also a good way to clean myself underneath,
after the BM.  Yes, the water does sometimes get all over the bathroom floor,
but that's an easy cleanup with a towel.

As such, I have found that a set bowel time for me every other day does not
work.  Because I let my body tell me when it's time my BMs are fairly natural,
quick and easy.  However, there are drawbacks to this system as well.  First,
it
requires access to your caregiver at short notice [my caregiver lives with me,
so it works out.]  And, second, it's more difficult to schedule around.

[Another thing that has always been a laxative/stimulant for me is coffee.  A
cup of coffee about 20 minutes before wanting to do a bowel program starts this
moving for me.]

I hope this info helps someone.

Greg--how often do you have bowel routine?? in my early stages as a quad,
myself
and some others had those problems when they had us trying every day or every
other day--the nurses in st. louis told us that many quads have better
resullts going every 3 days or so--the doctors here agreed,...so we started
doing bowel routine twice a week--worked out great for us !!! been on this
schedule over 13 years now-- spinal docs told us that going every 3 days or so
will not cause any problems ( some think that a person must go every day ) but
this is not true,,, a quads body function slows down for many people---some may
need to go more often but many do not. I'm not sure if this is related to your
problem but just a suggestion.  good luck- Danny H. here in snow

Greg,
I had this problem too.
Sometimes the poop just goes backup, especially using a 2nd magic bullet or
enemeez. So, I only use 1 , if it does not come out, I wait 24 hrs and take
milk/magnesia. this usually makes it come out.

Like what others say, I changed my diet and started taking mirlax.
I go now every other morning, 1 hour instead of 2, and no more digi-stem.

It took awhile to get cleaned out (a few months) after starting tweaking my
diet.
I take 4 senokote the night before. This helps push it down.

good luckI was very depressed with my bp. I dread it.but, thank god

Re: [QUAD-L] Unidentified subject or bowel program

2011-01-11 Thread donald scott
i have been a part of the list since all most the beginning. this topic
comes
up all the time. there is no set in concrete best way to take care of your
bowels. eat well, drink lots of water, and  find what works for you. if you
want
to know what has worked from day one till now 20 years later for me its this.
first off im a c5-c6 complete so what works for me might not for you.

i do my bowel care every other morning. my caregiver comes in at 7am. im
laying in bed on my right side with a peach pad under me. a pillow supports my
back and another between my knees and ankles. caregiver clears the entrance
with
finger. puts in one magic bullet and one glycerine suppository. then rubs my
tummy in circles a couple times. i put a folded one time hand towel on my chest
for sweating. i try and fall back asleep for a while during the time i go. my
caregiver also rests and comes back 1 1/2 hours later and cleans me up. results
are usually good but sometimes not. i always after im cleaned up no matter the
result, have the caregiver restimulate me and rub my stomach again. we wait a
1/2 hour more then clean me again if needed. thats it as for doing the deed. no
sitting on a hard shower chair. i rest right through it most mornings.

as far as diet goes i do have some rules for myself. on the days i did bowel
care i dont eat any spicey foods or drink any alcohol. (good thing there is
weed.) on the other day i eat anything i want and can drink alcohol if i want.
thats it. i do eat fairly healthy but not anything special at all.

as far as pills go i do take senna 1 pill twice a day and docusate 1 pill in
evening on bowel care day and 2 pills in evening the other day.
this program has always worked well. i average about 15 accidents a year and
sometimes thats due to me breaking my rule of no spicy food or booze. also some
accidents happen from illness or stress.

i hope my way of taking care of the dirty deed works for someone.

good luck, donald c5-c6 complete almost 20 years.

Don.

I didn't use my chest strap, except in my van, for many years. On one
particular occasion I was daydreaming as I crossed a wooden bridge and then
it donned on me that I was going out into a busy sidewalk. So I sidled over
to the left and accidentally hooked my left rear tire on the corner of the
bridge. Since I was driving a Peachtree, it naturally through me to the left
and I ended up barely off the sidewalk with my face all the way down at my
knees and my rear wheels spinning hopelessly in the air. Thankfully it was a
busy road and some wonderful gentleman who ride around in a golf cart doing
work for the community came by and helped me out. What's truly sad is for 20
minutes cars drove by and did nothing.

Thank goodness my image care at a bar that protected the actuator on the
bottom of the wheelchair. That particular thing hooked a segment of the
sidewalk as I was heading toward the ditch that I ended up dangling over.
Then again there's that time I went off the sidewalk on the side of my
house. I kept thinking I could get back up on the sidewalk in all I
succeeded in doing was sliding further down the incline until I was wedged
up against my neighbors wouldn't fence. Some of my neighbors came by about
20 minutes later and after getting more help from more neighbors, they were
able to pull me out. Thankfully I was in the shade. That would've been a
whole different story if I would've ended up in the sun down here in the
middle of summer. It's 80° today and that's not even bad.

After 28 years, that was the first time going off a curb. Once my 5/6 year

I've been using my new Permobile rear wheel drive C350 for about seven weeks
now and I have finally gotten used to the Magitek enough to be able to drive
it at full speed in my community now. I don't try it on the sidewalks, but
I'd definitely use the roads (one of the perks to living in a very small
community). Right now my chair only does around 5 mph, but I can probably
turn it up some. I do, however, think the Magitek dampens down the ability
to drive to much faster than 6 or 7 mph.

BTW, it took me quite a while to get used to the magitek. In fact, I still
mess up at least a couple of times a day, but I'm getting better every day.
Switching over from the Peachtree was a lot more difficult than I thought it
would be, a chin control would have been a little too hard for me to use.
That's just me though, there are more people using chin controls than
magitek.

with sip and puff control you just have to make sure you don't lose control of
it or come apart some bizarre way! Condensation during the winter months is
truly a pain especially entering and exiting from hot to cold it gets pretty
tricky at times. It's part of living in northern Indiana and wanting to keep
active no matter what the weather is! If I could have my friends good hook me
up with air horns constructing a small flat form would not be difficult by any
means just need some dimensions?

You're right about that Dave. My chair goes about 8 mph, and I only
use that speed when I'm on a smooth paved surface. When I'm going
that speed the slightest bump would send me flying. I had to adjust
the breaking time so that there would be a 12 second pause in case my
hand slid off the controls. That way, the natural drag of the motors
slows down the chair much slower then the abrupt stop that the
electronics give.

Well now I've just heard about it again from Stephanie at our North
Carolina chapter. SCS is signed up on it and it is available to us as an
excellent source of fundraising.

Here's the deal. GoodSearch.com is a search engine that pays money back to
your designated charity every time you use it. So every time you do an
internet search for something, use GoodSearch instead of Google or Yahoo or
whatever. For every search you do they'll pay a penny or so to SCS. That may
not sound like much but it will add up, if we use it! THIS IS A NO-BRAINER

engine so just use the one that will help us fund a cure.

It's simple to do. Go to _www.goodsearch.com_ (http://www.goodsearch.com/)
. You'll see the search box and then you'll see the box to choose your
charity. Type in Spinal Cord Society (open up your internet browser in another

then click 'verify'. Now every time you go to GoodSearch, SCS will be preset
and all you have to do is start your searches to make us some money. There
is also an 'amount raised' button so you can see just how much money is
being raised. This money gets sent right to Fergus Falls.

You'll also see GoodShop.com right below that. Do your online shopping
from there and it'll do the same thing to make even more money. AGAIN, THIS IS
A NO-BRAINER! You can set GoodSearch as your home page, as a Favorite or
download their toolbar or just their search box. All you have to do is just
USE it.

But don't stop there. Forward this to everyone on your address list who
you think would be willing to help your cause out. We should be able to
quickly get hundreds of people using this and it won't cost them a cent. Why
wouldn't you, or they, want to do it? I don't care if you're searching for the
best way to pick your nose, we should be using the heck out of this. It'll
be easy enough to check with Fergus to make sure they're getting the
money.

If you don't want to do this, then all I can say is there is truly no hope
for us.

my blood pressure--( i asked why after almost 12 years of low he said
low can be bad also and i may feel better?? i have the new script but not taken

I have no fear of toolbars except those that redirect my searches. The yahoo
toolbar doesn't seem to do this and it is easily turned off by going to tools
then toolbars and unclicking any toolbars you want to stop running.
I do not like Norton and I feel it is only helpful if it is free. Even then I
have had computers that just slow down incredibly from running it.
If you are going to purchace a suite of security software go to CNET or ZDNET
to see what people and experts consider to be the best bang for your buck. You
should have an anti-virus software running and a firewall. By going to tools
and then internet options then security you can add sites to your
restricted site list. This can stop others that use your computer from going to
sites that have viruses, trojans, and worms. Anti-spyware is an important part
of your computer defence. Don't be afraid to post questiuons to experts and the
folks selling computers.

Hi Greg,

Congratulations on your new computer? Is it Vista and do you use Dragon.
That kind of worries me because my computer came with Norton and I have that
on all of my computers. I have never heard of Kaspersky. I have had two
computers come with Norton.

I really don't like Vista as it does not work very well with Dragon 9,
unless I'm doing something wrong. Dragon doesn't respond to the commands that
were no problem with XP

Does anyone have any suggestions? What is the best kind of Bluetooth
microphone to use with Dragon?

I am just using a USB wired microphone that will not let me read the story.
The microphone did work for more than a month and all of a sudden stopped
working.

Thank you for any suggestion that can be given.

I'm aware that many comnputers have Norton or Mcaffee already installed,
usually as a 90 day trial. I try to go to www.cnet.com, or www.zdnet.com to
find out which anti-virus and or firewall that they recommend. I attribute my
last 6 years with win XP being so smooth to my use of the shield. When I used
Norton and Mcaffee I got viruses and trojans and I would spend a week getting
my computer back to a near normal behavior. These are only my experience. They
may have improved but I don't hear security people telling others to go get
Norton or Mcaffee. I think if you feel protected and you stay backed up, then
whatever you use is fine.
It is just my opinion, and y'all know it ain't always worth what you pay me :D

I certainly wish you all the very best.

Yes, by all means. This is most important if you purchase anything but a
MAC computer.
Most to all of those nasty viruses are designed to attack the PC platform
and you need that protection.
Perhaps the seller will bundle in that software with the sale. You only
have to ask.

you cant use the yahoo virus protection with other virus protections, they will

on a vent or with a trach. Other then increased numbness and some
nueropathic pain, I've been able to control it with neurontin and darvacet.

Since I'm only 4'6 and probably weigh 150 and my wife who is only 4 foot
tall and only weighs about 112 and she is really concerned that if I get much
worse she will not be able to handle me. The major problems that we have is
transfers into the bed, shower and commode. I do have a ceiling lift which
makes it a little easier, however rolling me from on side to the other can
wear
my wife out as well hurt her back. I'm able to stand up with the aid of a
platform walker to get into my commode but i cant get out or into my
wheelchair
on my own. The reason for this is because during my last surgery, I had a
mini stroke that affected my left side and the syrnix also affects it. I've
been trying to find a way that i could get some p/t help to assist my weary
wife who works on an average of 35 hrs a week. With the income I make from
SSDI and the monies she makes we do not qualify for the Home Community Wavier
program or the IHSS program. So you see if I get much worse I might have to
go to a assisted living facility or nursing home which would drive me nuts
since I'm only 50.

It's really sad that when people become disabled at such a young age that
instead of giving assistance to all that need it they want you to become
disatute prior to giving you help. Knowing how much work my wife does for me
in a
days time and then she goes and puts in another 8 hours at a local retail
store, I don't know how she keeps from going nuts or maybe she does and just
hides itt well. If I lost her I don't know how I'd carry on.

If any of you are going through living life with a Syrnix, please respond so
that we can compare notes.

That is a shame. I was getting 6 a day. I have lived alone as well. I didn't
use them all and now need them increased bc of the fusion limits me more. I
won't need them probably more than 6 months after I get rehab I will be able to
do more and will lprobably be more independent with my transfers again once I
relearn my balance. It's really off bc of the amount of spinal fusions. I
also need to regain strenght after being in bed since May except the 3 weeks I
had in rehab until my flap opened up. It has taken me forever to wait for the
hours and hopefully next week, I will be able to finally get up when I get the
help. I was given a really hard time bc my mom is my paid caregiver but lives
25 miles away. 6 hours isn't enough time do help me get dressed, help
w/errands, clean, etc. By the time I get washed up and dressed, it would be
time for me to go back to bed before she goes and would have no time for
anything else.

It's a shame how overworked these people are and how we have to wait for them
to get the papers pushed. I got really spoiled with my old coordinator. She
was working and going to nursing school while really on top of getting what I
need. I have to wait sometimes over a week for my new one to call me back.

Hoping to at least get outside next week. I'm going crazy in this stuffy
house. Thank God for the antideppresants because I have only spoken to a
couple of friends and have had one visit since the beg of aug. My friends are
busy with their amilies and its still busy in the restaurants here since the
weather is holding out here at the beach. I am hoping I can make the transfer
into the van so I can get away for a little bit to at least see them where they
bartend at. There is a lot more to hold on to and the transfer is short so I
pray when I try, it works out for me. I want to be able to drive myself to my
rehab so I don't have to deal with medical transportation. Especially to
Baltimore 3 hours away. Medical transportation picks me up before dark and
gets me home well after since I am first picked up and last droppped off since
I live the furthest east. They take loads of people to Baltimore each day and
its a nighmare.

Anyhow, It hurts my heart to know that a lot of you are worse off than me and
cant get the help you need. I know I can get better since I still have use
ofmy arms and wonnt need so much permantly. All I can say is that I'm lucky to
live in a good state willing to give the help if you can find the resources bc
they aren't exactly offered unless you get in touch with the right people.

Hope things get better for you,
Stacy

It is a shame. I've seen people really needing disability such as a girl I
knew years ago that had AIDS but someone that has bi polar can get it in a
heartbeat. If they took their meds, then a lot of them would be fine. My
brother for example took the meds, felt better then stopped. People take from
the system then work under the table so they get both. It really works my
nervs. That amognst so many other things such as Medicare wouldn't cover a gel
overlay for my cushion so my sore got worse. 5 surgeries and an extreme amount
of homehealth to monitor the sore including 400 bucks for a roho cushion is
crazy. I wouldn't have to had suffer and they wouldn't have had to pay so much
if they would have just forked over the 170 for what I needed in the first
place. Now my blood pressure just rose. hehe.

I think there is a limit to how much people can stand being around me. You
sound all sweet and fuzzy. I'm like a broken frankenstien toy with pieces
falling off. I print up messages from phone calls and nobody figures them out.
One aide said I was a 3-D puzzle with missing pieces.

Just laugh and go beg some money downtown so I can give her something to live
on.

Hope things get better for you,
Stacy

Hey Stacy,
Glad you're on-lineand the surgery went good.
As far as your care goes try to find a nurse you're comfortable with and be vocal with her.
I found just being very talkativedoes wonders becausea lot of peoplejust don't understand paralysis and are really lost about your care so theirmost common way todeal with it is to not deal at all so just strike up an everyday conversation, it opens their eyes and mind.

Hi Jerre,

Was the full body scan a MRI? I have noticed my pain has been getting worse in the past few years, but I know most of it is because after my right leg was removed in '89 my body has started to warp. It must be that because I'm ONLY 51...still young at heart. For the shape I'm in...I'm in good shape!

I'm having the bone scan tomorrow but they told me it didn't involve atube...ha! I don't mind the enclosurehaving an MRI, but I have too much body to squeeze comfortably through an MRI tube! I'm just hoping theywill diagnose something that can be fixed or at least treated! I cannot continue taking 6 pain killers a day just to exist. Please cross your fingers that it isn't a result of our increasing ageAs I turned 52 this year. I will let ya'll all know the results when I get them. I assume it will take a few days to get the results back.

I am also in good shape for the shape I'm in (9 years post)!

Love ya back,
Jerre

Hi Jerre,

Was the full body scan a MRI? I have noticed my pain has been getting worse in the past few years, but I know most of it is because after my right leg was removed in '89 my body has started to warp. It must be that because I'm ONLY 51...still young at heart. For the shape I'm in...I'm in good shape!

Hey guys!
I'm looking for someone who can tell me what is wrong with me. For several months I have been having pain in my left knee and hip. It has progressively become worse to the point it is not tolerable. I am taking Hydrocodone 5mg/325 for the pain now. The doctor thought maybe it was neuropathic and gave me some Lidoderm patches to try. That didn't do anything for it. So next he took x-rays of my knee and hip from every direction imaginable. They showed nothing except poor bone density (big surprise..haha). So next Monday 10/25 for another bone density test and a full body bone scan. I have no pain when I am in bed, but when I am up in my chair it is really bad. My left side is my weak side and I tend to lean that way when I'm in my chair. I'm wondering if it could be connected to the way I sit in my chair.

Has anyone else had similar pain? I am desperate for a diagnosis and treatment. I don't like taking the pain pills everyday butI just can't handle thepain, and I have a pretty high tolerance forpain. HELP!!!

I have had huge success with d-mannose as a prophylactic against UTI's
I have heard that excess vit c is not much of a deterrent. Do a search
of this substance and finf=d both scientific papers and places to buy it.

I recently acquired a UTI and the lab checked the potential of levaquin

Hi Jerre, I been taking 1000mg vitamin c about 3 times a week because I keep having UTI troubles lately. My Doc said be careful with to much vitamin c or calcium because they can cause stones easily.but he hates to give me any anti-biotics, so I been trying D-mannose which don't seem to be helping much this time and trying to drink more water .. Do you still take the vitamin c ?
 Thanks, Dan

Hi Jerre,

Do you take Methenamine, Hiprex, orUrex? These medicinesbelong to the family of medicines called anti-infectives. It is used to help prevent and treat infections of the urinary tract.

"Before you start taking this medicine, check your urine with phenaphthazine paper or another test to see if it is acid. Your urine must be acidic (pH 5.5 or below) for this medicine to work properly . If you have any questions about this, check with your health care professional.
The following changes in your diet may help make your urine more acid; however, check with your doctor first if you are on a special diet (for example, for diabetes). Avoid most fruits (especially citrus fruits and juices), milk and other dairy products, and other foods that make the urine less acid. Also, avoid antacids unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Eating more protein and foods such as cranberries (especially cranberry juice with vitamin C added), plums, or prunes may also help. If your urine is still not acid enough, check with your doctor."
http://www.mayoclinic.com/invoke.cfm?objectid=47FBE56B-C4EF-4A77-94F5D39821E256E5
That sounds like why your Urologist may have youtaking high does of vitamin C, but if you're not taking anything to workwith the vitamin C maybe it's the cause of the stones, so check with the Uro.
