 I commuted to work for 30 years. In those 30 years I had only one 
altercation, with a young aggressive boy in a pickup truck (a Southwest 
staple). Other than that everybody knew me. The secretaries would 
occasionally wave (with their perfume filling my nostrils as they drove by 
at 45mph). My commuter was a late 70's Holdsworth Mistral converted to 
fixed. British racing green, fenders, drop bars, saddlebag, knickers, 
sweater, wool cap. Every day was a tweed day for me. One morning a fella 
pulled alongside, very well dressed, gave me a thumbs up, and yelled "Rule 
Britannia." He was in a beautifully restored TR 6. Subsequently saw him in 
a gorgeous Austin Healey 3000. 
 I think your regular presence breeds acceptance. If the same people 
see you at the same time. Commuting is much more fun when it's not seen as 
a battle. 

 Also, I bought my Toyota pickup in 2002 with 30 thousand on it. It's 
got 130 thousand now. You can do the math. Most of those are camping miles 
from innumerable sojourns around the Southwest. Probably why the thing runs 
so well now...all those long distances at a constant speed.

Portland's winter, and my rims typically last 3-5 years before developing 
serious groves or cracks.

Yes, please double check and I’m interested.  Guess I failed to consider 
Italian size since I have no Italian threaded frames and thinking I might end 
up with spare cups if trading for a complete bottom bracket assembly.  I could

I have the "Frank Patterson the Early Years" and "Memories of Frank 
Patterson" books. The latter has a number of tandem drwaings from the same 
era as yours, but not yours. It might be in another volume. 

I really love your drawing. Reminds me of the camping trips my stoker and I 
go on -- very evocative. Should you ever feel like getting a good copy made 
I'd love to have one to hang on the wall.

An Italian (70mm) axle works fine. I did this previously on a Raleigh-made 
Huffy Sportsman. I think I have a Dura Ace spare spindle somewhere. Let me 
know if you're interested and I can check width.

[RBW] Rim Life

During regular Winter time off-season maintenance I noticed that one of the 
rims on one of my bikes showed a shallow but nonetheless significant score 
mark around the entire braking area surface.  Upon closer inspection of the 
brake pads I found a small rock stuck in one of the pad grooves (the ones 
that are supposedly there to expel water from the rim while braking when 
wet) that caused the damage.  The front rim on this bike was replaced in 
2004 after having been taco'd in a crash, but the rear dates back to the 
late 90's.  The front shows lesser wear.  Both rims are venerable Mavic 
Open Pro's.

So, I'm wondering two things:  1) what is the normal life expectancy of 
aluminum rims, and 2) why brake pad manufacturers insist on installing 
those grooves when everything I've read about them says that they do little 
or no good for anything.  In the case of the first issue, there is no good 
way to measure rim wear unless the manf. has installed dimples or holes or 
grooves on the braking surfaces that act as wear indicators.  A caliper 
won't do any good because the "tire hook" prevents the caliper from seating 
properly against the inside of the rim.  In the case of the second issue, 
are there solid pads available that do not have these slots in them, 
therefore minimizing the chance of a rock getting caught?

I never had rim wear problems until I moved to an area where I had to do 
most of my riding on trails constructed from compacted limestone 
screenings.  Before that all my riding was on hard surfaced roads.

To chime in needlessly I will say that I just bought a Clem H and my 
experience thus far is mixed. I have read Zed Martinez' review and I too am 
not taking to the Bosco bars as of yet. I say that with the caveat that I 
haven't ridden it much yet and hope I will grow to like the Bosco 
experience as did Zed. But, the bike is a beauty and so comfortable on the 
road and in the grass. It's also my first go with thumb shifters and I 
haven't found the ideal spot for them...recommendations welcomed.

threadless cartridge BB or Phil BB with Raleigh rings they are looking to 
maybe trade?

I have Sakae SX 170mm and Ritchey 177.5 JIS cranks (NOS, scored from Riv a 
while back) both with 110bcd and a bunch of 110bcd rings I'd love to 
use instead of continuing to deal with cotters but have no remaining bike 
budget to buy a new BB at this time (and I missed the boat on a $30 VO sale 
of 107 threadless that now shows sold out.)  Haven't had a chance to scour 
the bins at a co-op/bike church near my office yet but hoping to do 
so later this or next week.  Guessing they may have a cotter press there 
(or just lots of experience whacking them out) since they work on a ton of 
old bikes but I'm beginning to think updating to square taper will serve me 
well going forward if this project turns into a keeper.  

If I understand correctly I'll still need different sized bearings (6mm as 
mentioned in Sheldon's Raleigh articles) if going JIS cup and cone spindle 
route so everything lines up better with the off spec bearing tracks of JIS 
spindle and Raleigh cups.  Only spare cup and cone JIS spindles I have are 
68mm.

I suppose a Phil BB with Raleigh rings is likely the ideal upgrade but not 
only is this the most costly, it additionally requires a Phil tool which I 
don't have (or shop labor for a shop that has a Phil tool and this isn't 
really that kind of build anyway... but if anyone has Phil BB with Raleigh 
rings plus a Phil tool available for trade maybe we could work something 
out?

I guess what I'm really trying to say is that a VO threadless cartridge is 
probably the simplest and most straightforward option but I'm open 
to the alternatives.

It's already taken me over a year to get this far on the build and I'm 
trying to avoid rushing anything at this point.  Hoping to work this out 
methodically and with little to no additional expense... and I have a stash 
of parts that won't make it onto this next build and I'm willing to trade 
and open for discussion.

Oh, right... spindle length:  I think 107, 110, 113 should all likely work 
ok.

Ritchey cranks are 110/74 triple and I know they normally take really wide 
spindles but I've tested these as a double (single plus guard) on a 107/68 
and had a good chainline for a single speed.
The Sakae SX double was previously used on a 113/68 and matched up pretty 
well with the same SS wheel and dos eno fw.


Haven't taken full inventory of all spare stuff yet but here are most items 
that could probably be put on the trading block.  Not listing prices since 
I'm not yet looking to sell anything... some of these have been put on hold 
for back-burner projects but I think I could let some go to help move 
this one along.

Stems:
VO Cigne Stem - 9cm - high polish - 31.8 - scratch/dent from their initial 
batch but still in great shape with only minor blemishes.
Soma Highrider Threadless adapter (looong quill for using threadless stems) 
- black
Bontrager alloy - 9/8" threadless stem - 25.4 clamp - 120mm - 10deg rise - 
2-bolt - black
Easton alloy - 9/8" threadless - 31.8 clamp - 90mm 6deg rise - 4-bolt - 
black


Bars:
44cm Giant drops - Black alloy - 31.8 - takeoffs from a friends CX bike 
that went with a flat bar conversion. Shape of the drops just don't work 
for me.
Nitto RM-014f Dirt Drops - 52cm end to end - 31.8 - originally bought 
thinking they were more like a 31.8 version of RM013's.  These have much 
more flare and not as useful ramps.  Used briefly then went another 
direction.  Still have another frame they may work out on with the VO Cigne 
stem and Big Dummy fork but it's really too small a frame and low priority 
at this point.

Brakes:
Tektro TRP RRL - black on black (also have 2nd set of silver on black 
but currently installed on something but... if black vs silver levers is a 
deal breaker/deal maker I could work something out.) 
Shimano CX50 Canti brakes - one wheel's

None other than the Nitto Big Front. If memory serves, it’s rated to hold 30 
pounds. I love it because I have no nervous hand-wringing about weight on that 
rack. And it’s so lovely-looking. When I bought the bike I didn’t understand 
about Nitto and quality racks. I looked at Tubus and quickly changed my mind 
about the Nitto price tag. The Nitto just looks right on that bike. I say go 
for it!

[RBW] FS: Frank Jones Senor parts a.k.a. "you choose my adventure"

Since lots of you are receiving Frank Jones Senor frames around now, and 
since some of you don't start your build plans until after a new frame 
arrives, it occurred to me that I have two items that you might need or 
want.

1. A set of Tektro R559 long reach caliper brakes.  Recessed allen mount.  
Rivendell sells them for $80.  I'm selling these for $55 shipped.
2. A Dura-Ace 7710 32 hole rear track hub.  New in box.  $80 shipped

This is a "you choose my adventure" in the following ways:

I used the Tektro 559 brakes on my Schwinn Tempo 650B conversion.  The next 
stage in my Tempo adventure is having Ed Litton braze on cantilever posts.  
If you buy these brakes you will encourage me to get that work done, and 
you will discourage me from doing another 650B conversion for at least a 
little while. 

I bought the track hub to try fixed riding on a Quickbeam or maybe a 
Steamroller.  I ended up purchasing a single speed road bike with track 
ends and 130mm spacing, and I still use that.  If you buy this hub, you 
will discourage me from trying to find a used Quickbeam, and will 
discourage me from trying fixed riding.

[RBW] OT: Lennard Zinn documents heart problem

While many in this group are not into training, racing or other extreme 
forms of cycling, this article is good information and may serve as a 
cautionary tale for someone you know:

This goes back to "too much exercise may not be good for you".  Lennard 
does an excellent job of explaining a complex subject and relating his own 
experiences.  I've been down the path of drugs, cardioversion, ablations, 
pacemaker, different drugs, etc.  While I've never been a trained athlete, 
nor competed in any serious way, it's entirely possible that years of the 
"more is better" syndrome was contributory.  

Especially relevant is how he has had to adjust his riding activities to 
deal with his current reality.  It's a bit long & somewhat technical, but 
definitely worth the time and attention.

Total speculation:  

the QB was conceived as a low cost, utilitarian bike with minimal frills.  The 
stamped steel dropouts were stong and effective (not to mention ingenious at 
the time), but not especially pretty.  The FJ was intended to be very much the 
opposite.

Plus, manufacturing and design technology has improved by leaps and bounds 
since 2006.  I'll bet Grant and Co. are getting pretty good at Solidworks 
software.

A note about Chop Chorts. They're "fenders" in the way a custom bobber 
motorcycle has fenders: They look good and will keep a modicum of road spray 
back, but you wouldn't be commuting in Seattle with these things. I live in 
mostly dry California and bought them for the look, ease of mounting, and to 
keep my saddlebags from being drenched. You ride these on uber wet streets, yo 
bike gon get uber wet.

Abe: The Chop Chorts on a Cheviot don't pass under either brake so the tire 
size limit is the same as with no fenders. I'm running 41-ish Fatty Rumpkins 
but think I could easily get 48mm tires in there. 

PBH is 79ish, but I'm kinda short-legged vs. torso. Flipped Choco Bars with one 
inch lopped off the ends, 13cm stem. 

I'm not in Vallejo anymore, I moved to Novato a couple months ago.

Looks fantastic, the grips are nice and chunky, the blue is great. 

How wide a tire do you think you can fit with those Chop Chort fenders? I'm 
hoping to fit 42mm tires with fenders on my friend's 60cm Cheviot and I'm 
not sure which fenders would work best, but these Chorts sure look nice on 
your bike.

Also, may I ask how tall you are (and PBH) and what length stem you're 
using? I'm optimistic that the 12cm Tallux will fit me well with Albatross 
bars and I'm trying to figure how other's with similar setups fit. 

It looks like we're nearly neighbors! I'm in Napa but often cruise through 
Vallejo for Good Day Cafe, J's Garden, or on my way to Berkeley/Oakland. 
Hope to run into you sometime after I get my friend's Cheviot assembled.

Tom, the unfortunately named handlebar devices are great. I thought they would 
be a nice extra grip area, but what hadn't occurred to me was how helpful they 
would be with braking on a steep hill. Yesterday I was sailing down one and 
really appreciated that I could grab some brake without my hands wanting to 
slide past the levers. Get you some unfortunately named devices!

Last weekend I visited Blue Lug again, and took some pictures of FJ.
Sorry about poor quality.
They let me test ride it, but I rode it for only short distance, and the 
area around the store is flat.
So I can't tell about its ride quality.

Though it says "Trekking Knickers," looks like it targets cyclists, with 
reinforced seat area.
They don't fit your requirement in that:

   - They have built-in waist belt, so they don't have belt loops.
   - They have straps at knee, not elastic
   
If you're OK with above, I think they're great.
